How Do You Define Love?

A core issue in our time is how we define love. We must define it on God’s terms, not by the spirit of this age, not by our humanistic culture that seeks love without obedience to God’s Word. There are many definitions of love, liberty, and freedom in our culture that are not biblical. Jesus defined loving God as being deeply rooted in a spirit of obedience (Jn. 14:21). There is no such thing as loving God without seeking to obey His Word. “If you love Me, keep My commandments…21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me…23 If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. (Jn. 14:15-23)

The classical example of loving God is the Sermon on the Mount (Mt. 5-7), where Jesus defines love on God’s terms. It calls you to live out the 8 beatitudes (Mt. 5:3-12), pursue 100% fold obedience (Mt. 5:48), resist 6 negative influences related to your natural lusts (Mt. 5:21-48) and pursue 5 positive kingdom nutrients (Mt. 6:1-18) that position you to receive the grace of Holy Spirit. How do you define love? Don’t get confused with humanism and the spirit of this age. Look to God’s standard. Choose His terms
