I N T R O D U C T I O N
A centre for excellence was founded in the year 2003 and it was christened Mauras College of Dentistry & Oral Research Institute &Hospital (MCDH). Found amidst tropics, it was implanted in the peaceful, mesmerizing and paradisiacal Island of Mauritius. Of volcanic origin and sheltered for its major part by barriers of coral reefs forming natural, safe, crystal clear lagoons, Mauritius has long been a dream destination for tourists… Mauras College of Dentistry was established with the objective of eradication of oral diseases globally. The college is affiliated with Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar Gujarat, India which is an eminent university in the state of Gujarat in the Union of India. The Ministry of Education & Scientific Research, Republic of Mauritius has given permission for the setting up of the Dental College, Dental Hospital & ORI. The Ministry has also set up a Monitoring Committee to ensure the compliance of International Quality & Standards. The Dental College is accredited with Tertiary Education Commission, Mauritius The road to success, however, was not easy to pave out. The promoters were applauded for their endeavour to make Mauritius into a Knowledge Hub, though they had to trespass a series of hurdles and struggles. Mauras College of Dentistry & ORI & Hospital has got nevertheless unflinching support from the Government and its population, who has always trusted the services offered and are continuing to come in bigger numbers. Now the R.F.Gandhi A. K. T. Ltd is over take by the Samarth Vividhlaxi Seva Trust, a well known dedicated trust from India to develop the education not only in India but all over the world. The Trust is working under the guidance of the young and dynamic professional team having expertise in all the fields and under leadership of Mr. Hemang Patel. Still, the management does not want to stop till here and wants now to explore the world of dentistry in Mauritius towards another level, a different height, we believe….

Mauras College of Dentistry & Oral Research Institute & Hospital (MCDH) is 1st and only school of Dentistry in Mauritius. It managed by R. F. Gandhi A. K. T. Ltd. and R. F. Gandhi A. K. Trust, established with the objective of eradication of oral diseases globally. The trust has been set up by Professional Dentists dedicated towards the profession and advancement. The college is affiliated for B.D.S Course with Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India which is an eminent University in the State of Gujarat in the Republic of India. The college is also affiliated for Post Graduate M.D.S. Course with TSMA, Tver, Russia whose degree is recognized in Africa, Eastern Europe & U.A.E. The Ministry of EDUCATION & SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, Republic of Mauritius has granted permission for the setting up of the Dental College, Dental Hospital & ORI. The Ministry has also set up a Monitoring Committee to ensure the compliance of International Quality & Standards. The College has an attachment with 1000 Bed Multi Speciality SSR National Hospital, Pamplemousses for training thestudents for the Medical Related subject. The Dental College is registered with Mauritius Qualifications Authority. The College is aimed at getting accreditation from various other universities in South Africa & Russia. The curriculum of the College has incorporated the major requirements of the Dental Councils of the UK, USA and other prominent countries of Europe. The Recognition of the Dental Council of India shall be obtained after the completion of the 4th year of the 1st batch.

The Government of Mauritius has given the permission for the setting up of the 40-seat Dental College, Dental Hospital and Oral Research Institute in Mauritius. The College is affiliated with the Bhavnagar University. The Bhavnagar University is an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India and is under the purview of University Brants Commission, India. Bhavnagar University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities which is the apex co-ordinating body that has served the Universities over seven decades. Its member embraces all types of Institutions viz., traditional universities, agriculture universities, institutes of national importance, institutes of technology, information technology and those devoted to medical education and research.

Bhavnagar University is running all the major courses in education with more than 19,000 students and 900 teaching staff. The University has also many colleges and institutions within its ambit rendering education in various fields. Out of 360 Indian Universities, 10 Universities have been selected for international collaboration by University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India, New Delhi & Bhavnagar University is amongst the selected universities.

The duration of the B.D.S course will be of 5 calendars years, with internship included. The basic concept of Under-graduate dental education shall be health oriented teaching with stress on prevention of oral diseases, instead of the traditional diseases oriented teaching. To achieve this objective, the dental students shall be exposed to health problems throughout the period of under graduate training. DENTAL CURRICULUM The aim of the dental curriculum is to produce a caring, knowledgeable, competent and skilful dentist who is able to accept professional responsibility for the effective and safe care of patients, who appreciates the need for continuing professional development, which is able to utilize advances in relevant knowledge. The education process shall be an evolving one and not merely a process of acquisition of a large number of disjointed facts. There shall be less emphasis on didactic lectures and major part of the learning time shall be devoted to demonstrations, group discussions, seminars, clinical work and conferences.

SUCCESS RATE Along with imparting quality education to the students, Mauras College of Dentistry & ORI & Hospital has so far had a commendable success rate.
Frequent internal assessment tests shall be held, so that, the process of learning would be a continuous one and not sporadic. Careful record of work shall be maintained, which shall form the basis for internal assessment.
Selection of Candidates: Selection will be based solely on Merit. Short listed candidates may be required to appear for an interview before the “Admission Panel” on the given date and venue which will be intimated later, at their own expense. Selected candidates will have to pay the required fee before the admission.

Admission Procedures Eligibility for Admission: a) Academic: Candidates should have passed the 10 + 2/ A` level or an equivalent examination from a recognized board with Chemistry, Biology, Physics as principal subjects. Candidates should have obtained not less than 50% marks as the minimum requirement b) Nativity/Domicile: Students from Mauritius as well as other countries like South Africa are eligible to apply. The candidates should have proficiency in English. c) Age: Candidates should have completed 17 years of age on 31st July. They should submit documents like Birth Certificate or School Leaving Certificate to prove their age.
Commencement of the Academic Year shall commence from the ACADEMIC YEAR month of August every year. Application form: A candidate for admission must submit an application in his own hand writing, in prescribed Application forms which has been duly signed and issued by the dean. The Application forms can be obtained from the Administrative Office at Mauritius or our website i.e., http://www.maurascollege.org/application_form_dental_college.asp This form, duly completed in all respects along with necessary documents, must be submitted either by Registered Post or handed over personally together with stamped and self addressed envelope for a reply, so as to reach the office of the Trust before the last date. A processing fee of EU 25 must accompany the application form. Incomplete, defective and late applications will not be considered and no correspondence in this matter will be entertained.

Cancellation of Admission: If any candidate who is offered admission does not pay the prescribed fees at the time of admission, his/her admission will be treated as cancelled and the seat will be offered to the next eligible candidate. The college will not be responsible for any postal delay or delay due to any other cause in the receipt of the notification or admission of the candidate. The admission offered to the candidate shall be cancelled if at any point of time the College finds and declares that the candidate is not eligible for admission due to non-fulfilment of the conditions of admission. Even if a candidate has paid the fees but fails to join the college within a fortnight without intimation or prior permission of the Dean, the latter may at his discretion cancel the admission of such a student. If any information supplied by the student in connection with his admission is later at any time found to be incorrect, the student shall be liable to be removed from the college and the fees paid by him shall be forfeited. The decision of the Management in this regard shall be final. The Chairman of the Company reserves absolute right to reject all or any of the applications without assigning any reason at any time.
Execution of Agreement: Agreement: The Parent/Guardian of the student admitted to the College shall be required to execute an agreement on a stamp paper in the performa as prescribed at the time of admission of the ward to this college. Advance Post dated cheques/Direct Debit for the tuition fees for the subsequent academic years will be deposited along with the application form.

The Dental Council of India is the STATUTORY BODY which is mainly concerned with the MAINTENANCE of standard of DENTAL EDUCATION and further is the duty of the council to REGISTER QUALIFIED DENTIST and ELIMINATE QUACKS from the field.

THE DENTAL COUNCIL OF INDIA
1. One registered dentist possessing a recognised dental qualification elected by the dentist registered in part “A”, of each state. 2. One member elected from amongst themselves by the members of the Medical Council of India. Not more than four members elected from among themselves by Principles, Deans, Directors, and Vice-principals of Dental Colleges in the states training students for recognised dental qualifications, provided that not more than one member shall be elected from the same college, and Heads of Dental wings of Medical Colleges in the state training students for recognized dental qualifications. 3. One member from each university established by Law which grants a recognized dental qualification. 4. One member to represent each state to be nominated by the government of each state. 5. Six members nominated by central government. 6. Director general of health services.
