hildhood obesity is an ever growing issue. It seems as if it is here to stay. That is unless we continue to step up to the plate and recognize the problem. I presented some interesting facts and research to a group of N.F.P.A. Personal Trainers and Fitness Instructors last year who were keeping up their continuing education requirements to stay certified. You see, the fitness industry is working at it. Our struggle is trying to convince the parents to let us help them and their children. Education is the key. Here are some of the facts, statistics, and research I presented to these fitness professionals. Current estimates of childhood obesity range from 25 to 39% and many professionals feel that this condition is largely under diagnosed and under treated. The staggering increases are up from 1976 when the range was 5.5% to 7.6% according to the Center for Disease Controls. The National Center for Health Statistics states that one out of five U.S. children is overweight or obese and according to the American Academy of Pediatrics overweight teens and children has more than doubled in the past 30 years. Obviously this has become quite a puzzle to solve. Let’s discuss some of the reasons. The first choice for many is genetic tendencies towards
obesity. I do count them but when looking at the increases in the last 30 years we cannot blame these large increases on genetics alone. According to research, the age of a child when they become obese can give us a glimpse into their future. If a child is obese under the age of three then they are not at risk unless one parent is obese. After an obese child reaches six years of age, the probability of obesity existing to adulthood will exceed 50%. The probability climbs to 70-80% if obesity is around in adolescents (age 12-17). According to The American Academy of Family Physicians, only a small percentage of childhood obesity (less than 10%) is associated with a hormonal or genetic defect. The remainder (greater than 90%) is idiopathic in nature (of unknown cause). However, we do know possible causes and they can be numerous.
That 90% can be linked to the following:
• Lifestyle: T.V., Video Games, fast food • Lack of Physical Activity • Reduced Physical Education and recess at public schools • Excessive junk food/sugar • Socioeconomic Status • Ethnicity (Blacks, Hispanics, and Native
• Americans 4-6% more likely than white( Ohio State University-“05) • Cultural Differences • Demographics If you have a child who you fear is headed this way or is already there, then take steps to change. The first step is being a good example for your child. Children learn best by mirroring behavior and you must be a positive role model. Get rid of the junk food, start exercising, and take control of your child’s health. You are responsible for them and you are only helping them by saying “no” to fast food and video games and “yes” to exercise and healthy eating. So how do we go about it? We can blame countless reasons but what I want to talk about is some of the possible solutions and also what’s not a good idea. Some parents are being pro-active but this can be scary too. The American Pediatric Association and The American College of Sports Medicine say that it is alright for children 6 years and up to participate in weight lifting. A statement like that will get many concerned and they should be. Those organizations go
on to say that “with restrictions”. Some of those would include avoiding non-spine loading activities such as barbell squats with the weight pushing downward on the spine. There is emphasis placed on not performing one repetition max lifts as well. So, “how much you bench press?” should not be a concern when talking to children and younger teens. I once heard a Doctor say, "Children are simply not mini adults." What a great statement. I think many times that coaches, trainers and even parents try to put children on the same routine that they know. I have seen so many adolescents and teens that are growing so fast that they can barely figure out how to run, jump and skip without tripping on their own two feet. People try to take those same type body types and have them do maximum lifting with movements that could really damage their joints. This is not a good idea. They need to development their motor skills first and foremost. Through the years I have run various programs and watched kids flourish into lifestyle fitness patterns. This is the most important element. Is the experience really teaching the child about fitness as a lifestyle or are
they experiencing pain, frustration and a sense that they are not good at something? Programs designed for children, adolescents, and teens need to vary based on stages of development. The stages can be general but not too specific since children develop at different rates of maturity. For example, some 14 year old boys might be able to start learning how to do a bench press and squat while others might need to simply start with push ups instead of the bench press and step ups or lunges instead of the squats for their thighs. Step ups are great because they involve stepping up and down on a bench using one leg at a time and you don’t have additional weight on your shoulders. This allows the trainer to see if the child has a dominant leg and if so, try to correct bad habits. This trains strength, balance, and coordination without the concern of spine loading that can be associated with the barbell squats. You may have heard comments about using their own body weight as a safer means of exercise instead of using dumbbells or barbells. In reality, a person using their own body weight can be more difficult than using traditional weight lifting. For
www. brag BOOK Magazine.com

example, previously I stated that push ups might be better than a bench press. These exercises work the same muscles by pressing with your chest except that the push ups have an additional element of core stability needed since you must keep your spine properly aligned during the movement by tensing your stomach muscles. If you have a child who is 5’ tall and weights 160 pounds then that child will probably not be able to perform push ups effectively, if at all. That same child could be guided with 5 lb dumbbells on a bench to learn the chest press movement correctly. The saying, “practice makes perfect” needs to be altered to say, “PERFECT practice makes perfect”. The most important element for young weight lifters to learn is perfect form. If they start off with bad habits because they simply want to move the weight then they lead into more and more bad habits. The movement should be smooth and not jerky. If you have children that need to start working out then find an appropriate place. Find a specific program that deals with these issues. Unfortunately, some school programs are not always the best choice since most coaches are not certified strength trainers. Teach your child good habits by showing that you make this a lifestyle for your whole family. Nutrition must be a priority as well. I tell my clients that nutrition is 80% of the solution. We have to look at all of the little things that add up to big things when it comes to snacking patterns. Soft drinks are a big one for example. What about “sweet” tea? We think drinking “tea” is not as bad and maybe from a chemical standpoint this is true, but it does not change the fact that is has sugar in it. I had a lady stop her habit of sweet tea and lost 17 lbs in about 3
months! What a difference. I also see parents give their children sports drinks. They are also full of sugar and not necessary. Let’s discuss a great example of “eat this, not that.” A single patty hamburger with condiments and veggies served with large French Fries and a 20 ounce soft drink will contain approximately 1276 calories. That meal has 160 grams of carbohydrates/sugar and 51 grams of fat! In comparison, have your child eat a 3 ounce grilled chicken breast and wheat bread, an apple and a nonsweetened ice tea or water. The total calories are only 402. This meal has 61 carbohydrates of which none are sugar. It also only contains only 4 grams of fat. This is only one example but the difference is 874 calories between those two meals. In a year that change to a total of 319,010 calories! There are 3,500 calories stored in a pound of fat. Therefore that yearly total is the equivalent of over 91 pounds of fat! So even if you cut the soft drinks out you might cut out 30 lbs of fat a year hypothetically. Help your children make good decisions. It does not mean that they never get to have a hamburger, fries, etc. but it needs to be more of a special treat instead of a daily habit. Childhood fitness needs to be a family effort. Get started today.

Tips for selecting the best doctor f o r y o u r b a b y. by John Gifford
So
you’re halfway through your pregnancy. You’ve chosen a name for your baby, reviewed and confirmed your employer ’s maternity leave policy and you’ve signed up for childbirth classes. What’s next? Now is the time to begin searching for a doctor for your baby. This is one of the most important decisions you’ll make because
" It's
important to feel comfortable with and trust your

your child will be visiting the doctor regularly – for checkups, immunizations and for treatments when sick – from the time he or she is born. Not surprisingly, choosing the right physician is crucial to starting your baby off on the road to a happy, healthy life. It’s important to remember that a good doctor is not only competent in treating disease, but is also knowledgeable in preventive measures and child development. And while pediatricians specialize in the care of children, many family practitioners treat kids, as well. So how do you select the right doctor? A good place to start is by asking your
family or friends who have children. Ask them what they like about the doctors they mention and why they recommend them. Pediatrician, Kim Edgmon, MD, who sees patients at the Mercy Edmond Santa Fe Clinic, believes it’s best to follow your instincts. “Go with your gut,” she says. “It’s very important to feel comfortable with and to trust your physician because you need to be able to ask the doctor anything concerning your baby.” You’ll want to ask lots of questions when interviewing a physician, so it’s a good idea to make a list of them prior to your visit. Dr. Edgmon advises asking about the physician’s treatment philosophy in order to make sure her approach to treatment is consistent with your views on the subject. To that end, you must decide your position on medica-
tion and vaccines. Are you against all medications? Or do you expect your child to receive them each time you visit the doctor? “Ask your doctor what his or her philosophies are,” Dr. Edgmon says. “Make sure you and your doctor have the same approach or you will be unhappy. Accept that you are not going to change a doctor ’s opinions on these areas and if you don’t see eye to eye, there will not be a working relationship.” Understanding who will treat your child is another important consideration. In some practices, physician assistants or nurse practitioners see many of the patients, so if this is a concern for you, you’ll want to be sure and ask if the physician is the one who will actually see your child. Practices that are able to accommodate your schedule and see your baby on a
P regna ncy T o - do L ist : M ont hs 4 a n d 5 Selecting a doctor for your child isn’t the only thing you need to do at this point in your pregnancy. Here’s a list of some additional tasks you can do now to make your life easier once your baby arrives. Begin looking into childcare: Whether you choose in-home care, a nanny or daycare for your baby, you’ll want to get recommendations and check references.
•
Begin planning the nursery: Direct that nesting instinct into preparing a room for your baby.
•
Check with your rabbi, priest, pastor or religious leader and decide if you want a religious ceremony to welcome your baby into the world.
•
Assemble a first-aid kit: Prepare now for those inevitable boo-boos and ouchies.
•
Get your financial house in order: Develop or revise your budget, eliminate debt and consider your future goals.
•
Set up online banking: The less time you spend paying bills, the more time you can spend with your baby. For a complete month-by-month checklist, view Mercy’s New Parent Organizer at mercyok.net. www. brag BOOK Magazine.com
moment’s notice are appealing to parents searching for a physician. However, some practices operate on a more rigid schedule and may not always be able to get you in the same day you call for an appointment. “Ask if they run on time and if you will be able to be seen the same day when you call,” Dr. Edgmon says. “Decide which is more important to you, because most doctors can’t do both.” Many parents are enjoying the convenience and accessibility of MyMercy – Mercy ’s integrated electronic health record – in keeping track of their children’s health care. MyMercy allows you to access your child’s (or your own) medical records, ask your physician a question or request prescription refills from any smartphone or your computer ’s Internet browser. Also, Mercy doctors from anywhere within the ministry ’s four-state network can access these records, which helps improve safety and reduces the risk of duplicating expensive tests and other procedures. This is reassuring if you’re traveling out of state in Arkansas, Kansas or Missouri and need to see a doctor. Once you have a candidate in mind, take the time to visit the physician’s office and note how the doctor interacts with others. Take into consideration the condition of the waiting area and facilities, which should be clean and orderly. And make sure your insurance covers the physician you choose. Selecting a doctor for your child may seem like a time-consuming task, but having just the right person looking out for your child’s well-being is worth the effort.

Caring for you and your baby is a work of Mercy.
Dr. Sheila Algan, MD OU Health Sciences Center Campus OU Physicians Building 825 N.E. 10th Street OU Children's Physicians Building 1200 N. Phillips Oklahoma City, OK 73104 (405) 271-2663
The freedom
to laugh, run, and play is an important part of childhood and a vital part of youth sports. However, this quality playtime can become serious work for some kids. Dr. Sheila Algan, MD says kids are being forced at a very young age to choose a sport and become competitive. Maybe their parents or coach want them to get a college scholarship or become a sports star. “The way the coaching is and some of the parents are, they’ve gotten so driven about it that it’s no longer necessarily just about the kid.” Working as an orthopedic surgeon for OU Medicine, and running a sports medicine clinic at OU Children’s Hospital, Dr. Algan often sees that dynamic. She sees some children consistently coming to the hospital with nagging little injuries, and it seems clear the parent is driving the child toward the sport. That kind of drive can come with consequences. Children who focus on one sport to the exclusion of others end up getting hurt more often. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says new research shows kids who devoted themselves to only one athletic pursuit were almost twice as likely to get hurt as those who played multiple sports.

P laying the Game
www. brag BOOK Magazine.com
Dr. Algan says when a child is focused intensely on one sport, and does not have much down time from training, overuse injuries can occur. That is because a child’s muscles and bones are still developing and can’t handle the amount of training and physical stress an adult’s body can. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons says a sports activity that causes a sprain in an adult could cause a more serious injury in a high school athlete. That’s one of the reasons why Dr. Algan suggests taking some preventative measures. She advises parents to educate themselves and their children about strength and conditioning, stretching, warm-ups, cool-downs, and injury prevention programs that their coach may not be utilizing at practice. Prevention is also crucial when you’re treating an injury. Neglecting even a minor injury could lead to devastating consequences debilitating the health and physical ability of a child. That’s why it’s important for parents to get medical care for their children at the first sign of a sports injury. Watch for your kid’s cues. Is your child limping and icing or rubbing sore heels or knees? Look for those early warning signs. Dr. Algan says overuse injuries will eventually go away with some therapy, stretching, and exercise. However, if a child or parent chooses to ignore or hide an injury to stay in a competition, it will only turn into a bigger injury with even bigger consequences. Dr. Algan recalls a nine-year-old competitive gymnast who fell victim to a neglected overuse injury. “I told [her parents] you have to slow her down and she’s got to back off for a little bit,” she says. “The mom didn’t take heed and it basically turned into a stress fracture where I had to take her out of competition completely.” You do not want to deal with that consequence. Dr. Algan says, “Everyone has to have a little bit more realistic expectations about what we want to get out of a sport and what our child wants to get out of it.” Take a step back and look at the big picture. Most nine-year-old sports superstars won’t grow up to be major league baseball players or NFL stars. Some children may even tire of a sport before they make it to college. If your child is getting burnt out, injured, or doesn’t simply enjoy playing a sport anymore it may be time to rethink their involvement. Dr. Algan says to be your child’s best advocate and help them make good decisions.

If
you’re 20, 30, or 40, how do you keep what you’ve got? No matter how good the cosmetic procedures and products are, they can never beat what God gave you in the first place so here are some ideas on holding back the hands of time. Prevention. We talked about that in the last issue, but briefly, don’t smoke, wear sunscreen daily, exercise, and take vitamins and antioxidants as well as omega-3’s. Good skin care includes at least an alpha hydroxy acid and antioxidants. I recommend daily exfoliation, too, with a buff puff or facial scrub. And did I say “Wear sunscreen”! Botox & Dysport. These tiny injections stop wrinkles that occur from smiling and frowning..... AND....they keep them from developing. Guys & gals in their 20’s can actually prevent the crow’s feet and frown lines between the brows by using this every 6 months. If you’re in your 30’s and 40’s and already have those lines, Botox and Dysport will minimize them and give your body a chance to heal them so they don’t get any worse and they just might get better. Fillers like Restylane, Juvaderm, Perlane, Sculptra, and Artefill are great for all lines and wrinkles once they’ve developed. The first 3 are hyaluronic acid and very natural.....in fact hyaluronic acid is part of your cell’s makeup! These are also reversible if you just hate it.....which I have to tell you rarely happens! Sculptra is a biostimulatory agent that causes your body to build up its own collagen and can last 3 to 4 years. Artefill is essentially permanent. Chemical peels are good maintenance. They come in all strengths and kinds. I typically do a TCA peel on my skin every year and have done so since I turned 30. Even the lighter, salon strength, peels are good for your skin. There are a covey of fractionated delivery machines like fraxel and e-matrix. These are good in the late 30’s and 40’s to stimulate collagen and elastic fibers. Remember, thicker skin

with more elastic and collagen fibers looks more like a baby’s skin. Finally, we can do non-surgical tightening procedures.... there are a bunch of brands of these, too, like Thermage and Refirm. In your 40’s you will start seeing sagging...partly from loss of elasticity and gravity and partly from loss of facial fat. Thermage and Refirm tighten the skin and Sculptra or other filler injections help to revolumize. I trained in Beverly Hills and I can tell you that the stars that stayed looking youthful did so by addressing aging early. But NEVER overdo!!! If
you’re 20, 30, or 40, how do you keep what you’ve got? I typically do a TCA peel on my skin every year and have done 2 so since I turned 30. Even the lighter, salon free strength, peels are good for your skin.

You can do lots of little procedures and treatments but if you overdo, you don’t look better, you just look overdone! Trust your doctor to help you in this regard.

A Plan for Pregnancy Lauren Downs
We’re having a baby! That announcement is everything some couples dream of celebrating and sharing with each other. So, when a couple faces the obstacle of not being able to get pregnant, they simply can’t accept defeat. That’s where Dr. Gilbert Haas Jr., MD comes in. He works in a branch of medicine that identifies and treats infertility in both men and women. Now it seems, men and women need the help of a reproductive endocrinologist more than ever. Dr. Haas says, “The number of people seeking help with fertility has dramatically increased.” The first step for a couple having difficulty getting pregnant is identifying if the problem is indeed infertility. Dr. Haas says infertility is defined as one year of unprotected sex without conceiving. Infertility in patients over 35 years of age is defined as at least six months of unprotected sex without conceiving. Dr. Haas says, bottom line, the moment a couple stops
using birth control is when the clock starts on getting pregnant. That’s true whether a couple is trying to have a baby then or not. There are only three absolute causes of infertility. One cause is the man has no sperm. Another cause is when the woman never releases an egg or does not ovulate. The third absolute cause of infertility is when both of the woman’s tubes are blocked and the sperm and eggs cannot get together. It is actually uncommon for Dr. Haas to see these absolute causes. “My world is a world of gray for the most part.” Any remaining causes of infertility are all relative. It is easy to get discouraged in a world of gray uncertainty, but couples should realize the chances of getting pregnant even without any fertility problems are not as great as most people might think. Believe it or not, humans have the lowest pregnancy rate of any mam-
www. brag BOOK Magazine.com
mal. Dr. Haas says two-thirds to three-fourths of human eggs won’t make a baby, even in a young and healthy woman. The chances of getting pregnant can be broken down by age. A normal, healthy woman under 35 years old has a 20-25% chance of getting pregnant each month or cycle. That chance decreases with age. A 40-year-old woman has a 10-11% chance of getting pregnant. That chance decreases to 5-6% for a 42-year-old woman. The chance a woman will miscarry is 10-15% at age 35. That chance increases to 25% at age 40 and 35% at age 42. Dr. Haas says the chance of a woman having a miscarriage may even be more than 50% at the age of 43. He says that as women age, the chances of getting pregnant dramatically decrease with each passing month. That’s because there are fewer eggs to fertilize and the quality of those that remain is poor.
49
What are some reasons a couple should seek the help of a
reproductive endocrinologist?
Women
If you are under 35 and have had one year of unprotected sex without conceiving. • If you have irregular periods. • If you have had gonorrhea or chlamydia in your lifetime and you and your current partner have had a few months of unprotected sex. • If you have had a difficult appendicitis surgery. • If you have unexplained breast milk. • If you are underweight. • If you are overweight. • If you have abnormal hormones. • If you know you are not ovulating. •
Men
• If you are under 35 and have had one year of unprotected sex without conceiving. • If you have experienced a testicular injury. • If you have ever had an STD. • If you weigh over 250 lbs. • If you are an avid cyclist.
Gilbert G. Haas, Jr., MD 5401 N. Portland, Suite 510 OKC, OK 73112 www.okivf.com (405) 604-6470
These statistics may point to the woman as the determining factor of fertility, but men and women both play an important role in a successful pregnancy. It might be surprising to men that they account for most of the problems with infertility. Dr. Haas says the male factor makes up 3540% of all infertility. Some causes of infertility in men are a testicular injury, weighing over 250 pounds (lowers the sperm count), avid cyclists, and sexually transmitted disease. STDs have a negative impact on reproductive health in both sexes but especially in women. STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause tubal blockage. Remember, if both tubes are blocked, that’s an absolute cause of infertility. Other sources of fertility problems in women are endometriosis, abnormal hormones, poor cervical mucus, irregular periods, being underweight, being overweight, and unexplained
breast milk. For example, women who breastfeed have a 90% reduction in their ability to conceive because of production of the hormone prolactin. Dr. Haas says a couple can increase their odds of getting pregnant on their own by identifying when the woman is ovulating. He says ovulation predictor kits can help an ovulating woman determine the best time to become pregnant. Surprisingly, Dr. Haas says that time is not on the day of ovulation. He recommends using the ovulation predictor kit several days before you know you’re going to be ovulating. Dr. Haas says you’ll probably get a blank or very faint test line for a few days, and then you’re going to get a subtle darkening. That’s the time to try to get pregnant. There are two kinds of ovulation predictor kits. One kind uses smiley faces to indicate when you are ovulating. The second kind uses lines. Dr. Haas says not to use ovulation kits
www. brag BOOK Magazine.com
with smiley faces. He says there is no subtleness with the faces. There either is or isn’t a face. Dr. Haas says, “The lines show that subtle color change and they ’re the best to use.” He also suggests using a body temperature chart to look for a sustainable temperature rise. Using a chart for months can help you look for a trend when your body temperature spikes and that can help you pinpoint when your chances of becoming pregnant are the greatest. Dr. Haas says some infertile couples who do not conceive with simpler treatments may consider in vitro fertilization. Doctors select the egg and don’t leave it up to chance. This can present problems if the woman wants the doctor to put more than one embryo back. Dr. Haas says that is why in vitro fertilization has caused an upswing in multiple gestations. However, he says it is highly questionable to put back more than one embryo. The chances of a major problem like premature labor, fetal growth retardation, and pre-eclampsia, which is the leading cause of maternal death, increase dramatically. “The greatest cause of mental retardation in the United States is multiple gestation.” Dr. Haas says playing with the lives of mother and child is nothing to handle lightly. While all this may sound discouraging, remember that the great majority of people are able to get pregnant successfully and to have healthy babies. Any couple can greatly increase their chances of a successful and healthy pregnancy with the right plan. When a couple decides to have a baby, they should sit down with their family doctor and discuss the way ahead. Set the conditions for a healthy pregnancy. If a couple experiences difficulties in getting pregnant after one year, they should see a reproductive endocrinologist. Knowledge is power. Doing the right things at the right times can make all the difference.

More
than a decade ago, Desmond Mason could be found soaring through Washington, D.C.’s MCI Center (now the Verizon Center) en route to winning the 2001 NBA Slam Dunk crown. Jaws hit the floor on the east coast that night, much like they had in Oklahoma during his college career at OSU.
Today, Desmond has proudly hung up his sneakers, and turned his focus to his true passions: family and art. Settling down in Oklahoma City with his wife, Andrea, and their two children, Jada and Elijah, the Mason family once again calls Oklahoma home, and they couldn’t be happier about it.

The Early Years
Mason’s journey began in Waxahachie, Texas, where he had to mature much sooner than others. His father spent a portion of his childhood in jail, leaving his mom with the responsibility to raise him and his brother and sister alone. “My mom really held the family together when we were growing up,” Mason said. “I admire her so much for the job she did in raising us.” As a high school senior, Desmond found himself being pursued by college basketball programs from all over the country. Known for his tremendous athletic ability, Mason was eventually lured to OSU by Eddie Sutton.
The College Years: Finding Love Beyond Basketball
In his first public appearance at Gallagher Iba Arena for the annual Basketball Bash, Mason won over the fans with a single dunk. He shattered the backboard. The crowd went crazy, and a star was born. Of all the highlights from his college career, Mason’s favorite came during his sophomore year. It wasn’t a buzzer-beating shot or electrifying dunk. It was a friendship he developed with star freshman soccer player, Andrea Larsen, his future wife. “The two of us met in our dorm, and we became good friends,” the Masons said. “Eventu-

ally, it evolved into more than just a friendship, and we started dating.” By his senior year, Mason was attending all the soccer games he could to watch and support Andrea as she ran circles around her opponents. “I wasn’t sure what to expect when I went to the first game,” Mason said. “But when I got there and saw her in action, I was blown away by how good she was. To say I was impressed would be an understatement.” With his collegiate career winding down and the NBA Draft approaching, Desmond and Andrea were faced with a difficult decision. Andrea still had one year of college left, and there was no telling where Desmond would land in the league. Prior to the draft, the two

Blake Loepp received his bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Broadcasting from Oklahoma State University. He currently works as a public relations consultant for a top PR firm in Tulsa, OK. He is a “self-proclaimed” sports expert having worked with clients ranging from golf courses, to college athletic departments to the WNBA and more. Away from work Blake enjoys spending time with family, friends and his Jack Russell, Marley.
decided they would move wherever Desmond landed together. “We knew we wanted to be together, so Andrea was willing to transfer and finish her soccer career somewhere else so we could stay together,” Mason said. “The only exception would have been if I was picked by Dallas. That would have been close enough that she could have finished in Stillwater.” Dallas, with the 12th pick in the 2000 NBA Draft, passed on Mason and selected Etan Thomas out of Syracuse. The Seattle Supersonics later pegged Mason with the 17th overall pick.
Pro Days
During his career, Mason spent three seasons with the Sonics, four with the Milwaukee Bucks, two with the New Orleans Hornets (both in Oklahoma City following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina),
one season with the Oklahoma City Thunder and a short stint with the Sacramento Kings. Following his 10-season career, Mason decided to retire and move with his family back to Oklahoma City. “My family was comfortable in Oklahoma City, and that’s where we wanted to be,” Mason said. “The community provides a great, family atmosphere. People (in Oklahoma City) seemed to enjoy having us around, and we enjoy being around them.”
The Mason’s Today
Today, Desmond has his hand in a variety of business ventures, but Andrea’s business, barre3, has experienced major success in a relatively short amount of time. Andrea was originally a client of barre3, but immediately saw its value. This eventually led to
her starting her own barre3 franchise in Oklahoma City. “Andrea had followed me around for 10 seasons, so it was time for her to do her own thing,” Mason said. “Now, barre3 is at the forefront of our businesses.” Not lost among Desmond’s business portfolio is his art. Since he was 13, his art has always been his “release” from basketball. So, he’s determined to put his talents to good use. “I’ve put on art shows every year for the past seven years, and the proceeds go to charity,” Mason said. “I don’t single out one particular charity. I find out from city officials where the greatest needs are in the community, and we choose the best charity to meet those needs.” As Oklahomans, we’re so very fortunate to have the Mason’s call our fine state home. They’re a family who aspires to great heights – the only way they know how.

“Twindividuality” If it seems “Twindividuality”
like everywhere you look, people are having twins, you just might be onto something. Multiple births are rising in the U.S. The American Academy of Pediatrics says the number of multiple births has increased 42% since 1990 and 70% since 1980. The use of fertility drugs and in-vitro fertilization, as well as the rise in women having children past their thirties, all influence the increase in multiple births. Dr. Jeanne Schaefer, a pediatrician at First Choice Pediatrics in Edmond says, her office is seeing quite a few sets of twins. At first glance, they can look just alike, talk alike, and act alike. Dr. Schaefer says, “Twins can get lost in each
other sometimes.” Twin babies share an uncanny bond and even their own language of infant babbling. You might expect every set of twins to grow up with identical habits, interests, and personalities. Dr. Schaefer says some parents even feel shocked at differences between their own twins. She says, parents become concerned when one twin develops faster than the other, or one twin eats and sleeps better, or their personalities are different. Despite their likeness, “even identical twins are two different people,” Dr. Schaefer says. “I encourage parents to embrace some of those differences and learn some of those differences, instead of trying to make their twins the same.”
"Twindividuality" Art and Soul Photography Cupcakes from Gigi's Cupcakes
Let each child share the spotlight. Avoid referring to your twins as a unit. Make sure to call them each by their own name and refer to them to others individually. Point out and praise their positive differences and nurture their unique interests, hobbies, and dreams. Supporting and celebrating your twins’ differences will help them grow up happy and secure as individuals. Dr. Schaefer says one on one time with each child is important in helping your twins feel comfortable and confident without their other half around. “Let one twin go spend time with mom, while the other twin hangs out with dad for a little while.” This doesn’t have to be difficult to do. One child can go with a parent to complete regular weekly errands while the other stays home with the other parent or spends time with another family member. Each child can also have their own chores or tasks they help mom or dad with at home.
“As twins get older though, let them have individual time away from the family,” Dr. Schaefer says. Encourage your children to select individual activities as well as individual friendships and separate play dates. Make sure to schedule those separate play dates at the same time so no one feels left out. Another part of encouraging individuality is rewarding and punishing each twin’s individuality. That means, celebrating one twin’s achievements even if it creates jealousy and not punishing both twins for one twin’s bad behavior. It’s important to remember that while twins seem very much alike, they are emotionally different. A child may grow up resenting being compared to their twin or getting in trouble for their brother or sister’s mistakes. Remember, no matter how alike twins are, they are different people. Nurture their differences and encourage individuality and each child will shine, with or without their twin.

Acupunctur e Acupuncture is divided into two philosophies. The first being the Eastern idea which is a 5,000 year old Chinese system of natural healing (no drugs-no surgery) which is concerned with restoring proper energy flow to the various organs, glands and tissues of the body on the premise that most diseases are the result of malfunction due to disrupted energetics. The Western idea is the use of needles to stop pain by blocking nerve pathways, as well as, the release of your body ’s own natural drugs-known as endorphins and enkephalins. In both philosophies, acupunc-
ture treatments are typically performed by needles inserted into the channels of energy which are called meridians, located throughout the body just underneath the skin surface. Needles are left in places typically for 10-20 minutes. Very commonly acupuncture can be used with fingertip pressure, electrical stimulation, and numerous other techniques which do not involve using a needle. Recently, acupuncture has been in the news due to the National Institute of Health recognizing it as a proven alternative treatment. Acupuncture can be used in the treat-

ment of numerous health conditions, most of which are related to pain management. Typical ailments reported in literature include neuralgias, headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, tics, spasms, muscular rheumatism, neuralgia of the shoulders and arm, tennis elbow, osteoarthritis, rheumatism, ulcers, stomach problems, diarrhea, hepatitis, asthma, bronchitis, shortness of breath, coughs, certain types of heart trouble, abnormal blood pressures, hemorrhoids, lumbago, bladder irritation, bed wetting, certain kidney problems, female disorders, impotence, glaucoma (sometimes), weak eyesight, hay fever, loss of smell, tonsillitis, loss of hearing, skin conditions, and even nervous and psychiatric factors based on the fact that mental problems often arise from physical disorders. On the average, a very high percentage of patients will respond satisfactory to acupuncture treatment; however, some patients do not respond due to a variety of reasons. Advanced age, severity of condition, irreversible tissue damage, etc., are deterrents to recovery. However, in conjunction with chiropractic, physical therapy, and acupuncture, the odds are very favorable for a good response.

The Art of
Maternity Photography I
have found the popularity of maternity photography has increased over the last few years. This is a beautiful time in a mother’s life when mother and baby are one and the beginning of a forever relationship. The body changes because a mother is given the honor of carrying a special little life. Images with spouses, family, or special someone can show the excitement of this time. Many mothers say the images give them a renewed sense of the beauty of this time and allow them to appreciate their unique form of the body at this time in their life as a mother to be.
When is the best time? The best time to capture is 30 to 33 weeks. This is before you might feel uncomfortable. Too early in the 2nd trimester your belly might not be prominent enough. Thinking about it early is great because it allows you time to book your session at a convenient time. As a professional photographer for maternity and newborns we tend to book up several weeks out.
How should you prepare? Preparing for your shoot should not be different than any other special occasion. Don’t do any major changes to your skin cleansing or your hair. You would not want to irritate the skin or have a hairdo that won’t work with you on the day of your shoot.
What do we wear? Wear light clothing that does not create marks on the skin. Undergarments should be light the day of the shoot. Wearing a light colored thong is recommended because of the wraps that we use. Wear or bring your favorite maternity outfit as well. If you are bringing a spouse or special someone, we always discuss before the shoot what they should wear as far as colors that will be used in the shoot.
What if I have stretch marks or dark lines on my skin? The majority of woman would say I would like this or that lightened or taken out of the image. I look to always use flattering lighting techniques that will exhibit the unique beauty of maternity figure. The body is a beautiful blessing and I always compliment it with flattering poses and fabrics that will accentuate that. After the images are captured the rest of the artistic process is continued to enhance the beauty. Skin is softened but not made unnatural or plastic. Imperfections on the skin are lightened or taken out. Creating artistic images that you and your family will want to cherish for generations is my passion.
I was having a rather typical sick day in the life of a pregnant woman and Brocks made me feel as comfortable as she possibly could. I didn’t feel rushed and I was given the time needed to regain composure.
I wanted to do maternity pictures because this was my first child, and kinda like my time to shine (every pregnant women needs to feel that ).

ZERONA Laser : A ’Microwave’ for Body Fat By Harvey Jenkins, MD PhD As
summer
approaches,
people become increasingly critical of their own body shape. A “muffin-top” or the belly slipping over the waist band becomes the source of ridicule and the social kiss-of-death. You can hide under more clothes. You can avoid social situations. Only the most brave and fearless will don a speedo or bikini and face the unmerciful scrutiny of the beach-going crowd. People for whom the gym, diet and surgery are not working for appropriately now have another option, a laser that makes getting rid of excess body fat as simple as lying on a table, or a slipping a “muffin” into a microwave. It is called Zerona Laser, and is the first FDA approved laser for weight loss and fat-melting. With Zerona, a reduction of 6 inches or 2-3 Dress sizes or Pant sizes is possible in a 2 week period, in just 6 short sessions.
What is Zerona?
Zerona is a new non-invasive body-sculpting laser designed to instantly remove fat, reduce inches and contour the body without invasive surgery. It is the first laser of its kind. It can be conceptualized as Liposuction without surgery or Laser Lipo without incisions. It is completely painless. It does not involve bleeding, or downtime. There is no requirement for the use of external garments, as is common for lipo to control bleeding. . Furthermore, there is also no recovery period. With Zerona, you can resume your normal activities immediately, as soon as the treatment session has concluded.
How it works?
The Zerona laser is classified as a ‘low-level’ laser which operates at a wavelength of 635nm. At this wavelength, it can be used to safely emulsify adipose (fat) tissue by causing pores to form in the fat cell (adipocyte) through which the contained fat droplet can be expelled in to tissue space. This is similar to the heating effect of food in a microwave. Once there, the fat droplet is reabsorbed into the lymphatic system and can be eliminated and excreted from the body. Double-blind Clinical studies have proven its effectiveness in emulsifying fat in fat cell layers. Studies of Zerona effectiveness when applied to the abdomen, waist, hip, buttocks, and thighs indicate an inch loss of around 4 inches to up to 9 inches in 2 weeks. The Zerona treatments are approximately 40
BEFORE minutes in duration. If sufficient inch and fat loss are not seen after the 6th treatment session, additional sessions may be done to eliminate more fat.
Is it Safe? And Effective?
At this time thousands of people in the US have undergone Zerona treatments. So far, there seems to be no risks or complications associated with this treatment. In addition to being safe, the satisfaction rates for treatment are high. The fat loss can be maintained if the appropriate lifestyle changes are made. One Zerona client in the Oklahoma City area makes the case even more convincingly. Susan W, a client from Edmond, was about 50 lbs over ideal weight and starting to develop health problems, when she decided to start Zerona. Like most people, he was skeptical because she had tried virtually every diet known to man (Weight Watchers, Atkins, Jenny Craig and even the Subway diet) with no long-lasting results. After 12 treatments, Susan has lost a total of 30 lbs and over 14 inches cu-

AFTER
mulatively in about 6 weeks. Susan says “I started to see change beginning at the 3rd treatment”. Susan is so impressed with her Zerona Results, she is planning more treatments.
Cost
Zerona is not cheap, but surprisingly is a lot cheaper than liposuction. There are only 3 Zerona lasers in the Oklahoma City area and less than 20 in the state. The cost is variable, but locally and nationwide ranges from about $2,000 to$3500 for 6 treatment sessions. Finally, we have what appears to be a very simple and safe option for reducing body fat rapidly. Your body will be beach ready. Story
An Adoption John and Chassidy Satterfield began their love story almost a decade ago after a “chance” meeting at the wedding of some college friends. Their budding romance naturally progressed into a deeper love, which led to an engagement and marriage 8 years ago. They were a beautiful couple on top of the world…blessed with good health, wonderful jobs, and surrounded by very supportive friends and family. John and Chassidy always dreamed of having children and became excited to start a family. Never in their wildest dreams did they anticipate the journey to have children would be an emotional roller coaster full of heartache and disappointment, and at times finding themselves asking the question “why us?”. After several years of attempting to conceive on their own with no success, John and Chassidy sought out the expertise of a reproductive endocrinologist. Through this process it was determined that there was no clear medical indicator as to why they had not conceived on their own….simply named “unexplained infertility”. The couple tried numerous months of artificial insemination, to no avail. The next step recommended to them was in-vitro fertiliazation (IVF). Chassidy underwent 2 separate IVF cycles, the first cycle was unsuccessful and in the 2nd she became pregnant, but suffered a miscarriage shortly after. Even through the heartache and disappointment of their attempts to become pregnant, both John and Chassidy continued to pray faithfully and were determined to become parents. The couple began to research adoption. They quickly became familiar with the terms “International adoptions vs. domestic” and “open adoption vs.closed”. They began talking to couples who had adopted children and inquiring about their adoption journeys. It was at this point that they were led to Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption Services (DPAS), the oldest adoption agency in the state of Oklahoma, serving our community for 111 years. John and Chassidy were invited to attend Beginning the Journey, a seminar held three times a year for pro-

spective adoptive parents at Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption Services. After the seminar, John and Chassidy agreed to move forward in their journey to become parents. They completed the application process and home study and awaited approval to move forward with the process. The approval process, on average takes around 3-6 months. Once approved, the prospective adoptive parents can be chosen at any time by a birthmother. John and Chassidy were approved and within 2 weeks were ecstatic

"Adoption is about expanding relationships, not subtracting from them."" to hear that a birthmother had chosen them to adopt her baby! Less than a week later, John and Chassidy were greeting their new son Turner Satterfield and meeting his birthmother. When Turner was nearing 2 yrs. old, the Satterfields placed themselves on the waiting list again and soon thereafter were able to witness the birth of their daughter Lydia Satterfield. Their family of 2 quickly became a busy family of 4! John and Chassidy’s adoption of Turner and Lydia are considered open adoptions. There are many different perceptions as to what “open” entails. The Satterfields explained that before they began the adoption process , the idea of an open adoption was met with slight hesitation. After months of education and support from Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption services, they wholeheartedly embraced the idea. DPAS explains that most adoptions begin as a semi-open adoptions, meaning the adoptive parents stay connected to the birth mother through monthly letters and pictures via the agency and may also include visits with the agency as a mediator. A fully open adoption involves ongoing contact/visits without the agency as mediator. Lastly, there are closed and confidential adoptions, where there is no exchange of identifying information and the birth and adoptive families do not meet one another. Closed adoptions are only facilitated at the request of the birth family and are very rare, according to DPAS. Dierdre McCool is the executive director of Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption Services. She explains that DPAS stands out from other adoption agencies because they see the critical importance of not only spending a lot of time in the beginning educating families on what to expect through the adoption process, but have numerous post adoption support programs in place to continue to assist
families in their journey. McCool states “adoption is a journey, not a one-time event. We want to continue to support our families throughout the child’s life.” The Satterfields describe their adoption journey as a “ministry”. They have shared their testimony with other potential adoptive couples through Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption Services. They serve as mentors to those couples who have also struggled with infertility and are considering adoption. Most importantly, they have devoted themselves to having a healthy relationship with the birth mothers of their children and never forgetting the sacrifice those women made to do what was best for their children. “Adop-
tion is about expanding relationships and not subtracting from them”, shares McCool at DPAS. Chassidy states “Our adoption journey has been the single biggest blessing in our lives!” Deaconess Pregnancy and Adoption Services is looking forward to their annual fundraiser entitled Angels of Destiny, La Dolce Vita! slated for September 7, 2011, from 11:30-1:00 at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Chassidy is looking forward to sharing her adoption story at this wonderful event.
