ctober marked the 86th anniversary of the little black dress. Rewind almost a century to 1926 when designer Coco Chanel unveiled a not so exciting, basic, below-the-knee black sheath in Vogue. Fastforward to today’s designers from around the world who are rocking the little black dress in everything from fabulously fierce fashion apparel, to everyday wear in modern, easy-to-wear styles and fabrics. The little black dress – affectionately known as LBD – was once reserved exclusively for periods of mourning and considered inappropriate to wear in public. Today’s little black dress is predominately a wardrobe and an “after 5 p.m.” staple worn by women everywhere. It’s no wonder the LBD is in every woman’s closet. A Closet Moxie Closet Makeover

ost women know what it is like to face a closet full of clothes and absolutely nothing to wear. Such a wardrobe nightmare comes true when women collect clutter, hang on to clothes that do not fit or flatter, keep old or outdated items, or buy items that look great by themselves but just do not seem to go with anything they own. Some women simply get stuck in style ruts because they are uncomfortable to step outside of their comfort zone and try something new.

One savvy fashion expert wants to be every woman’s secret weapon for style. She can transform any closet full of fashion fiascos into a dreamy wardrobe packed with a plethora of fashionable options tailored perfectly to maximize the individual fashion flair, body type, and lifestyle of each woman she rescues. Her name is Angela Crawford and her love and knowledge of all things fashion led her to open the boutique Closet Moxie in 2011. Crawford says it took a lot of moxie to get back into the fashion industry in the midst of raising five children, but a little bit of fate brought her back to her passion. “It is a struggle to manage a family and a business, but I love it!” Crawford says. Crawford soon realized that she could help women of all ages find their moxie with an inspired new wardrobe makeover service called “Closet Innovation: The Moxie Way.” Crawford says it is fashion education 101. “It equips women with the tools and knowledge that they need to dress, look, and feel their best.” Closet Innovation is not a cookie cutter plan, but rather a service that provides a unique experience of discovery for each woman that reveals her most flattering individual style. The plan is a five-step process that Crawford personally perfects and tailors for each client. The experience begins with a free consultation. Then, Crawford executes a closet cleanout to get rid of worn out, never worn, and outdated items. During this step, Crawford reviews everything from clothing to accessories and shoes. “I believe an outfit is a total package,” she says. “It doesn’t make sense to have a great outfit and then ruin it with the wrong accessories or shoes.” Clients model the items so that Crawford can examine their fit and look. She pulls items that she can put some moxie into and separates any items that can be salvaged

with some mending or an alteration or two. Clients can feel good about a revitalized, de-cluttered, organized closet as well as the knowledge that Closet Moxie donates their clients’ discarded items to the YWCA and the Junior League’s Dress for Success Program. Clients always have the option to donate their items to any charity they wish. Next, with the remaining items in the closet, Crawford creates brand new outfits by mixing and matching different pieces together that clients would never have thought of wearing. Crawford’s goal is to see how many new outfits she can create with a client’s existing wardrobe. “On average, I can usually put at least 20 new outfits together out of the client’s existing wardrobe,” she says. “Now that’s a bang for your buck!” Crawford says that once she even put 80 new outfits together for a client. “One of the biggest benefits of Closet Innovation is getting a new wardrobe without buying a whole new wardrobe.” Crawford says that not mixing and matching the items in your wardrobe is one of the biggest fashion mistakes you can make. That is probably why she believes every woman should own layering pieces, jewelry, and accessories to extend and maximize a wardrobe’s potential. “That is the whole purpose of Closet Innovation,” Crawford says. “It is making the most of what you have and adding pieces to compliment and complete what you already have.” Clients discover those complimentary pieces with the undivided attention of Closet Moxie consultants during a personal shopping trip at Closet Moxie. This is the step that completes the wardrobe makeover. Closet Innovation clients receive a credit from the price of the service to spend at the Closet Moxie boutique. The boutique truly has fashions

for every female. Crawford selects pieces for her store that add moxie to any woman’s closet, no matter her age or style. She looks at how every individual piece can be worn differently to compliment women in their 20s as well as women in their 40s and beyond. “I think looking good and wearing the right clothes for you makes you feel better and boosts your confidence,” Crawford says. The biggest benefit of shopping at Closet Moxie is that through the closet cleanout process, Crawford becomes familiar with each client’s wardrobe, body type, and fashion style. She can easily fill the holes in their wardrobes with the perfect pieces that they need. Knowing a fashion expert you trust, such as Crawford, makes shopping simple and fun but she says that she does not require her clients to purchase anything from her store. “Although I would love for all women to shop at Closet Moxie, that is not the goal of the Closet Innovation service,” Crawford says. “The goal is to assess what you have, get rid of what you don’t need, figure out what clothes are right for your body type and lifestyle, and then make the most out of your wardrobe!” Once a client’s wardrobe is fashion focused and dripping with their own

unique moxie, the task of putting all of the outfits together rests with her. That is why clients may select an optional personal wardrobe guide filled with pictures of the outfits created during the Closet Innovation process. The guide makes getting dressed and staying on track with their newfound fashion sense simple and enjoyable. That does not mean clients say goodbye to Crawford for good. The final step of the Closet Innovation service is to review and revamp each client’s closet, preferably twice a year, so that clients maintain their moxie. Undoubtedly, her clients build a relationship with Crawford and trust her fashion expertise. She says that they contact her even after the service is complete to consult with her about putting new outfits together. Luckily, Crawford maintains photos of her client’s closet collections so that she may refer back to each client’s personal style and clothing needs. Crawford believes that it is important to provide a service with which women can rely on a style expert to help them look their best. “Closet Innovation gives you a new grip on your life. You look better. You feel better,” Crawford says. “I think every woman should have her own unique style.”

retty skin is a year round endeavor. Just because the thermometer doesn’t rise above 90 degrees does not mean you can let down on protection. Cold brings out the best and the worst in skin. Here are a few tips to maximize the best. The problems we deal with are dehydration and sun exposure. Dehydration is due to a variety of factors. Environmentally the air is dryer, even outdoors. Indoors the situation is even worse because of turning on the heater. We also tend to not drink as much water in the winter, which can contribute to dr y skin. Even folks with oily skin need to take care because if the top layer dries out, the dead dry flakes can clog pores and contribute to pimples and blackheads. Sun exposure is still a major factor. UVA rays, which are the wrinkle and brown spot rays, are just as prominent in the winter as they are in the summer. You still must protect against that con-

stant chronic assault against your skin’s DNA. The good thing about winter is that it can bring out the best in your skin. Often the color becomes more even and the pores appear smaller. Play this up with foundation that has slightly more pigment giving you a flawless skin texture. The number one thing you can do to take care of winter skin is to rehydrate it. Drink lots of water. Choose water over tea, coffee or soda because the caffeine can add to the dehydration. Set up a cool mist humidifier in your bedroom so your skin gets bathed in more humid air all night long. Of course, use moisturizers. Many times in the winter, you can use a heavier cream than you would be able to use in the summer. You can use your regular night cream with just a touch of Vaseline if you aren’t prone to acne. Keep using your retinol and definitely use your daily scrub, just make sure you moisturize well morning and night.

Finally, don’t forget daily sunscreen, especially with a good UVA screener such as avobenzone or zinc dioxide. Body care involves rehydrating, too. After bathing or showering, keep your skin wet and apply a light oil, like sesame, to the skin, then towel off. Neutrogena makes a bath oil that is par ticularly nice with sesame oil in it. I would not recommend putting this in the bath water, though, because of the mess it makes in the tub. Just get out and leave your skin wet and rub on to prevent a mess. Feet need a little extra care. There are feet preparations that have salicylic or glycolic acids that help to soften that dead callus. Put these products, or even just plain Vaseline, on under socks at night. You will wake up with much softer feet. avid Anderson was only 6 years old when he asked his father, John, about feeding a family in need over the holidays. Little did John know that his sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s innocent question would turn into a fast-growing phenomenon that would not only feed hundreds of needy families physically, but spiritually. At first, John thought David, or Davo to family and friends, was asking about a family the Andersons had helped the previous year. But Davo had something else

in mind, asking, “When are we going to help a bunch of families?” After much persistence, it became apparent Davo was on to something. John thought about what his young son said for several days. When Davo came home from his grandparent’s house with $30 in his pocket, he still had the mindset of wanting to help others. Davo wanted that money to go toward a family, any family in need. After much prayer, John realized how he could act on Davo’s giving spirit to help feed families over the holidays. With that goal in mind, Davo’s Diner was created in 2009. The Andersons had called the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Ada their church home for many years. John started out this new venture by talking to the FUMC pastor and visiting with several other local churches. Family and friends were eager to help. After this, word spread quickly and a coalition of eager volunteers was formed. Preparations for the first event started shortly after Thanksgiving that year. snow and ice, Davo’s Diner was able to feed around 500 people. John recalls one family who walked two miles in the snow in order to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner. Another man showed up who had no place to sleep, so the volunteers banded together to provide him a hotel room. During their second year, Davo’s Diner served 900 meals. In 2011, they were able

to serve 1,000 meals. John says this year they hope to serve 1,200. “Whether we have one person or 1,200, the ones that need to be there will be lead there,” John says. According to John, one of the things that keep families coming back to Davo’s Diner is the fellowship. Anyone is welcome to enjoy the free meal, but the Andersons hope to also feed the body and soul of those who are

alone or just want someone to talk to. “The idea is to feed the hungry,” John says. “But, there are many people out there that have no family or their family is not around on Christmas. Davo’s Diner is as much for them as the ones who need the food.” In addition to the hearty meal and conversation, Davo’s Diner offers two bags of groceries to the first 400 families in attendance. For the children who finish their meal before their parents, there is a play and craft area under supervision of volunteer teachers. The Prepare for Tomorrow Foundation provides coats for those who need one. There are also photographers on hand to snap family portraits that are then framed and delivered to the families. “Pastors are there for anyone who has prayer needs or wants to pray with someone,” John says. “As prayer requests come in, there is a group of prayer warriors that pray right then for that person’s concerns or hurts.” The annual event wouldn’t be possible without the help of the many volunteers who start helping the weekend of Thanksgiving through Christmas and beyond. This year, John says there will be around 200 volunteers who will work in two shifts. “We are very blessed with the amount of volunteers that want to work,” John says. “It is amazing how many will make this a ‘must do’ each Christmas.” In addition, merchants are eager to donate food, paper products and more. The church community and individuals also help out with cash donations and prayers. “It’s hard work but a lot of fun to prepare,” John says. “We have a race each year to see how quickly we can pack the groceries. Last year, the record was 59 minutes thanks to some tremendous help from the county jail inmates!” Davo’s Diner has flourished from a traditional Christmas dinner for some to a place of refuge and renewal during the holidays for many. As the popularity of the event has grown over the years, so has Davo. John and his wife, Kiah, say nowadays Davo is a “regular kid” who wrestles with his younger brother, Matthew, and loves to tease his older sister, Grace. He also enjoys baseball, riding bikes and hanging out with friends.

“He is blessed with empathy,” John says of his son. “David is always on the lookout to see how he can help friends or even strangers. He is a peacemaker and very seldom puts himself first, always asking questions and wanting to lend a hand or help anyone who comes near him.” The Andersons would love to see Davo’s Diner continue to grow. Eventually, John would like to help people in different capacities such as education, jobs and housing. “I love helping and serving others,” he says. “I really hope to encourage other people to identify their unique gifts and use them to love each other.” It is that kind of love that the Andersons acted on to create Davo’s Diner. And it is that giving spirit that makes it so evident that Davo’s Diner is much more than a warm meal.

ing Crosby has had us dreaming of a white Christmas for as long as you and I can probably remember. Also, for as long as I can remember, winter snow’s white hue has been one of the traditional colors of the season, along with red, green, silver, and gold. Well, forget the Christmas color wheel this year. It’s going to be a “Blue Christmas.” Amy Williamson, owner and treasured designer at Heenan’s Home Furnishings in Oklahoma City, says that blue is everywhere, right now. It is the hottest color of the season. “It looks fantastic with bright pops of yellow and orange or you can mellow it out with creamy neutrals.” Imagine these colors enhanced with ambient lighting, hints of shimmer, warm, rich textures, and the smell of evergreen. That is Amy’s vision of a beautifully decorated home for the holidays. “I love a home that looks, feels, and smells like the holiday season,” Amy says. It is enough to put anyone in the spirit of the season. It isn’t always easy, however, making our beautiful visions come to life. Luckily, we can happily take a few cues from Amy’s years of exceptional experience and style. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma’s College of Architecture with a bachelor’s degree in interior design and has since worked as a designer for over a decade. Amy knows all of the hottest trends and styles in interior design.

First, updating your home décor with this season’s blue hue does not require you to redecorate your entire home. Gorgeous Green Chili Chili

2 lbs ground beef 1 medium onion 2 garlic cloves 2 4oz cans diced green chilis 8oz can sweet corn 2 16oz cans chili beans 1 4oz can tomato paste 1 16oz can diced tomatoes 1 tablespoon chipotle seasoning salt and pepper to taste Dice onion and garlic, set aside. Sear ground beef over mediumhigh heat in a dutch oven. Once meat is cooked mostly through, drain off excess grease. Combine all ingredient in dutch oven and simmer over medium heat for 30 minutes. Serve with homemade ciabatta bread (recipe next page).

Sweet Sugar Cookies 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 cups white sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375째F (190째C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, baking powder and set aside. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth, then beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll dough to a quarter-inch thick and use your favorite cookie cutter shapes to cut out cookies and place onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.

Warm Winter Ciabatta Bread 2 cups warm water 1/4 teaspoon dried yeast 2 teaspoon salt 4 cups bread flour olive oil rosemary

Measure warm water into a large bowl and add dried yeast, stir briefly. Let sit for 5-10 minutes for yeast to become active. Add half of the salt and mix lightly. Stir in flour and mix into a stiff, sticky batter. Cover the bowl loosely with cling wrap and leave it in a warm place for about 12 hours. After 12 hours, preheat oven to 400째F (200째C). Move the shelf to the top half of the oven. Liberally sprinkle a baking sheet with flour, rosemary and salt. Remove cling wrap. Using a dry wooden spatula coated in flour, scrape and pour dough onto the floured baking sheet shaping it roughly into an oval shape with the spatula. Sprinkle olive oil over dough along with pinches of salt and rosemary to taste. Put the baking tray in the pre-heated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until cooked and golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes on the baking tray before moving to cool completely on a cooling rack.
