The Gators are coming off a scoreless weekend in which they were defeated by Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus on the road. San Francisco State has lost four of its last five matches after winning three straight, including a 1-0 victory over Sonoma State in Rohnert Park on Oct. 3. The Gators are led offensively by Edgar Villagrana, who has scored five goals this season. Sasha Chalak has chipped in with four goals and Antonio Ugarte has three. SFSU snapped a six-match losing streak against SSU earlier this month, but the Seawolves hold a 27-8-4 record over the Gators in the Marcus Ziemer era.
Winless in their first 11 matches of the season, the Otters finally claimed victory with a 1-0 decision over San Francisco State on Oct. 15. Since then, Cal State Monterey Bay has lost its last three matches. The team has been outscored 33-8 and outshot 259-94. Beau Villanueva is the Otters’ leading scorer with two goals. Six others have scored a goal this season as well. Sam Campanelli has made 71 saves in 1212:44 minutes of work between the posts. Seawolves Blowout Lumberjacks in Weekend Series In the home-and-home series with travel partner Humboldt State over the weekend, the Seawolves outscored the Lumberjacks 7-0, including a 4-0 victory on Friday at Arcata. Five different Seawolves scored, including two goals each from junior Trevor Hurst and senior Brandon Dela Cruz. It secured Sonoma State’s seventh consecutive 10-win season as it looks towards qualifying for the conference and national tournaments coming up in November. With Two Matches to Play... ...the Seawolves (15 points -- 8-5-1) sit five points behind North Division leader Chico State (30 points -- 10-4-0) and just one point behind Cal State Stanislaus (26 points -- 8-4-2). The top four teams in the conference will earn a spot to compete in the CCAA Tournament on Nov. 5-7 at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. The winners of each division will earn an automatic bid into the tournament, leaving two at-large bids for the top two remaining conference teams. Sonoma State is currently tied for fifth in the CCAA with Cal State L.A. behind Cal State San Bernardino, Chico State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Stanislaus. Ranked Fourth in NCAA Division II West Region Poll In the official NCAA Division II West Region poll, the Seawolves are tied for fourth with Notre Dame de Namur. Cal State San Bernardino, Chico State and Grand Canyon are the top three teams in the region and the top four teams in the final poll to be released after the CCAA tournament will qualify for the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament. Sonoma State is looking to make an appearance in the postseason for the fourth straight season.
