Welcome to the 2019 Fair! And greetings from the Mayor of Healdsburg

he Ag life is sown into the fabric of Healdsburg and this year, we celebrate 70 years by honoring the past, present and future! I experienced all three elements when I joined the FFA/4H kids when they picked out their baby pigs on a cold foggy February morning off Westside Road. The parents were there, unloading the cages, shredding the hay and handing out donuts. The kids eagerly peeked through the trailer windows, looking at the squealing piglets. The Future Farmers, their little brothers, sisters and friends (including my 8-year-old) watched with excitement. It was the perfect example of the past, present and future, together.

As we celebrate the parade and fair from May 23 to 25, I encourage you to take a moment to pause, look around and take it all in. You’ll see families who have worked together to support their child’s animal rearing through the twice-a-day feedings, cleanings and grooming. Observe the little ones, watching their older siblings do real work keeping the stalls clean and appreciate the months of labor the proud kids have put into their animals, crab feeds and other volunteer events. Finally, I would like to invite you to join my wife Laurie and I at the Live Auction on May 25 at the Fairgrounds. You’ll see the heart of Healdsburg shine,

as neighbors gather to raise their paddles in celebration of the present. As we continue to honor our agricultural past, we have the privilege of passing those values on to our city’s future. Here’s to the next 70 years!

A message from the Future Farmers Country Fair president his year is the 70th year of the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. Fittingly, our theme this year is “70 years of H.F.F.C.F: Past, Present, and Future.” Seventy years is a long time and the fair directors haven’t forgotten those who have brought us all this way. At our annual Barn Dance fundraiser, we honored a few of the exhibitors from the very first fair. Mr. Al Greco, Mr. Joe Rochioli and Mr. Henry Cornellsen. Unfortunately, Hank passed away recently, but I’m thankful we all got to spend time with him and the other gentlemen and listen to their great stories from the past at a great event in their honor. Sometimes, we don’t get a chance to honor folks for their hard work and support until sadly, after they have passed on. This year’s fair is dedicated to such a man. Mr. Carroll Gossett. He was a quiet, good and humble man with a big heart who helped so

many kids with their fair projects. But, also by sponsoring awards and purchasing animals at the livestock auction and so much more! A true gentleman that we should all try to emulate. Another gentleman who also sadly left us too early was Mr. David Lewers. It was an easy and unanimous decision by the fair board to dedicate the Livestock Auction in his honor. Dave was a past fair board director and fair president but, there are many folks who remember him best as the Wildman of the auction ring! In his cowboy hat and star-spangled shirt, he would do whatever necessary as a bidder spotter to get bidders, to increase their bids and get a little more for the kids. Climbing the walls, jumping on tables flailing about and shouting till he was hoarse. The kids knew that if Mr. Lewers was in the auction ring with them, they were going to make some money! A good man, friend and local legend.

Presently, there is a group of folks that have helped us for many years and you are reading this in their paper! The Healdsburg Tribune has always helped get the word out about our home town fair and twilight parade. We thank them for all they do, and they are this year’s Parade Marshals. Thanks, Healdsburg Tribune! The HFFCF parade is the opening of the main event, the fair! The 4H and FFA kids have worked very hard to make it to the fair. Working with animals, exhibits, good grades, good conduct and help setting up the fair itself. Come enjoy the food, games, shows and contests. So much to do! But come visit and support the local youth in agriculture. They are future farmers and they are our future. See y’all there!

Our Junior Board Members he fair would like to introduce our Junior Fair Board Members for 2019: Sam Norgrove — My name is Sam Norgrove, and I am a junior at Healdsburg High school. I am a member of Healdsburg FFA and I have been raising market hogs for three years. I am involved in many different sports. I am on varsity baseball and varsity basketball. I also ran varsity cross country my freshman and sophomore years. I am a member of the local Boy Scout troop, and am aspiring to become an eagle scout. I look forward to serving on the Healdsburg Future Farmers Junior Fair Board, and putting my love of business and raising animals to work. Along with the Junior Fair Board, I am the chairperson for the FFA field day. The field day is located at the Rec. Park, along with the Healdsburg Future Famers Country Fair. The members of Healdsburg FFA set up booths, with many different games and learning activities for young students to enjoy. There are animals such as pigs, goats and chickens that the kids can learn about. Ashland Williams — My name is Ashland Williams and I am 17 years old. I attend Windsor High School and am in the AP core. I am the President of Gateway 4-H and I have been in the club for 10 years, showing pigs for 9 and cattle for 4. This is my second year on the Healdsburg Future Farmers Junior Fair Board. This year I am on the Cake Auction and Adult Showmanship Committees. I am really looking forward to helping out on these committees this year and learning about this behind-thescenes aspect of the Healdsburg Fair. Lexi Biasotti — My name is Alexis Biasotti and I am a member of the Healdsburg Future Famers Jr. Fair Board. I am a sophomore and attend Healdsburg High School. This year I am exhibiting two market pigs at the fair, and this will be my eighth year showing livestock at HFFCF. I am an active member in both 4-H and FFA. I love both organizations and what they have to offer youth in agriculture. I am so excited to serve as a Jr. Fair Board member alongside amazing kids and adults who make the fair possible. This year I am co-chairperson of the Cake and Barrel auction. My job is to organize the cake auction and help with anything else that needs work. If you would like to bake a cake, we would love your donation or if you would like to purchase a cake we really appreciate the support! The Cake & Barrel auction is held on Friday night after the livestock shows. I’m looking forward to HFFCF and I hope to see everyone there! Emily Dunkel — My name is Emily Dunkel, I’m 14 years old and a freshman at Healdsburg High School. This is my first year in FFA and my ninth year in 4H. I’ve been raising animals for six years and I hope to continue until the end of high school. A side from raising animals, I play volleyball, basketball and softball. This is my first year on the Healdsburg Future Farmers Junior Fair Board. I am excited to be a part of the fair in a different way and help out wherever I am needed. Hope to see you at the fair!

Mariella Passalaqua — My name is Emily Dunkel, I’m 14 years old and a freshman at Healdsburg High School. This is my first year in FFA and my ninth year in 4-H. I’ve been raising animals for six years and I hope to continue until the end of high school. A side from raising animals, I play volleyball, basketball and softball. This is my first year on the Healdsburg Future Farmers Junior Fair Board. I am excited to be a part of the fair in a different way and help out where ever I am needed. Hope to see you at the fair! Larissa Maccario — Hi, my name is Larissa Maccario, and I'm from Lytton Springs 4-H. I am currently on the Junior Fair Board for the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. I am the chairman of the garden barrel contest. This is where all five 4-H clubs, the Healdsburg FFA and the Jr. Executive Fair Board compete to make the best designed barrel. In these barrels the clubs will arrange flowers, and decorate the barrel. The barrels will be displayed directly across from the animal exhibits and be auctioned off Friday evening at the fair. Along with the barrels, cakes and sweet treats will be auctioned. I hope you can join us at the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and celebrate the 70th year of this festive community tradition. Spencer Rodgers — Hi, my name is Spencer Rodgers, I am 14 years old and attend Rincon Valley Christian School. This is my 10th year in 4-H. I am currently the vice president of my club. In 4-H I raise market swine and market and breeding beef. This year I am bringing a market swine and market beef along with a 1-year-old heifer to the fair as a breeding project. I also raise breeding pygmy goat, rabbits, poultry and cavies. This year I was selected by my 4-H club to attend the Jr. Fair Board meeting, and join the Jr. Fair Board. Each member of the Jr Fair Board choose something to put on or help put on, like kids day or adult showmanship. Since I enjoy being around animals, I chose the Petting Zoo. Each year the Petting Zoo comes to the fair and brings many animals to share with kids. In the past they have brought a mini pig, Highland Scottish beef, ducks, rabbits, goats and chickens. It is a really great addition to the fair and I would highly recommend coming and checking out the Petting Zoo and all of the other animals. Allison Grande — My name is Allison Grande and I have been showing animals at the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair since I was 7 years old. I am currently attending the Healdsburg High School as a freshman and am enrolled in the Healdsburg FFA chapter. This year I am showing my rabbit and dog under FFA and showing two market hogs under 4-H. I am the treasurer of the Warm Springs 4-H group. Serving as club Treasurer has been challenging, but I have gotten the

hang of it. As my first year on the Healdsburg Future Farmers Junior Fair Board, I got the job of hiring the DJ for the fair! I have put a lot of work into my job and I am looking forward to how everything turns out at the fair! DJ Dax is coming to the fair! From 5 to 10 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday DJ Dax will have a stand set out for all of the Fair to hear the amazing music! Come and listen to the great DJ Dax play his music and look at all the animals! Ellie Kaye — Hello, my name is Ellie Kaye, I am 15 years old, and the president of Warm Springs 4-H. As a member of the Junior Board, I am chair of flyers for Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. My job is to create flyers to help organize events with in the fair and let exhibitors know of important meetings to attend. Hope to see you around the fair. Fiona Davis — My name is Fiona Davis and I am a member of Warm Springs 4-H. I’m a sophomore at Healdsburg High School and I do FFA as well. On the fair board, I am a cochairperson of media. This is my very first year being a part of the Junior Fair Board and my ninth year being in 4-H. I live on a winery/ranch and that is where I have grown up and raise my animals. I am doing the swine project for the third year now and it is by far my favorite project I have ever done. I’m also one my club’s vice presidents. I really enjoy what 4-H has offered me and I am really glad that I have this opportunity to be on the junior fair board. Wilson Kiff Hi, my name is Wilson Kiff. I am a senior at Healdsburg High School. This is my fourth year in FFA, however, I have been showing animals through 4-H since fifth grade. This year I am raising swine through Healdsburg FFA. In addition to raising swine, I am a two-sport athlete playing soccer and golf. Meanwhile I enjoy swimming, and hanging out with my friends and family. I plan to continue raising livestock until I graduate in June. As a member of the Healdsburg Future Farmers Junior Fair Board, I am the chairperson of the Kids Day activities which will be held on Saturday in the midday at the Rec Park. At this time, kids will be able to compete in fun, exciting activities where they can also

win prizes, and gift cards for local concession stands. Some activities in the past have been, water balloon toss, watermelon eating contest, bubble gum chewing contest and many more! We hope to see kids of all ages show up and participate at the Kids Day and enjoy the fair! Claire Conrad — My name is Claire Conard and this is my first year on Healdsburg Future Farmers Junior Fair board. I am a sophomore at Healdsburg High School and show poultry at fair through FFA. I have been showing chickens at HFFCF since fourth grade, first through 4-H and now through FFA, but this is my first year raising market chickens. Outside of livestock, in FFA I am our chapter sentinel and I am competing in Impromptu Speaking Competition at state conference. I’m looking forward to this year’s fair and being able to see everyone’s hard work pay off ! Thank you! Jennifer Doherty — My name is Jennifer Doherty and I am currently on the 2018-19 Junior Fair Board for the HFFCF fair. I am a member of the Alexander Valley 4-H club raising market rabbits for the fair. This will be my second time to raise market rabbits for the fair, and my seventh year of being in 4-H. I am very excited for this year’s fair and hope to see you there! Adriana Novak – Hello, my name is Adriana Novak and I am on the 2018-19 HFFCF Junior Fair Board. This is my first ever year in 4-H and my first year being involved in the fair. This year I am showing market rabbits and will be representing the Alexander Valley 4-H club. Can’t wait to see everyone at this year’s country fair! Ian Plum – Hello, Healdsburg. I’m Ian Plum, a member of the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Junior Board, and this year I am your adult showmanship chairperson. The show will be held after the beef show Friday afternoon. If you would like to join or sign someone up it is $10 but if they decide not to show it is $20 to buy out. The proceeds from adult showmanship help cover the cost of the Kids Day activities. All you need is a pig or lamb to borrow and yourself. Feel free to dress yourself and your partner in a silly costume to win an award. I hope to see many of you in the ring.

A cordial welcome from the Fair Board Members Supporting youth forays into agriculture a team effort, says President he Fair Board is proud to bring you this year’s parade and fair celebrating its 70th anniversary. Fair Board President Nick Dunkel shared his view of why the fair is so important, both for the area’s heritage and its future. Dunkel said that his own situation did not allow him to join in raising animals as a youth, but he did hang out with the kids who did and learned a lot through them. “It was just fun,” he said. Now as president, he sees the value of giving back, and is still having a good time doing it. “These kids, having a chance to raise animals and be a part of agriculture is keeping our culture alive,” he said. The festivities all start with the Twilight Parade. Dunkel said that he was looking forward to see all the entries. Afterward, he said he is excited to see the maturing of the area’s future farmers, whether they be in FFA or a 4-H club. “There are a lot of lessons in animal husbandry, from the bunnies to cows, all the animals, when you raise it you have a responsibility to take care of it and keep it happy,” he said. “It’s the first time they see where their dollar goes. Gaining the concepts of buying low, selling high, and producing a great product, it’s something they’ll take with them the rest of their lives. “They work really, really hard. A lot can go wrong on a farm. Animals get sick. This year, we do not have a poultry show due to Newcastle disease. It’s a bummer for these kids but they work hard and they learn a lot. It makes me happy that all the while, they maintain good academics.” Looking ahead, Dunkel said the agriculture still has diversity even with a heavier interest in viticulture. “We like to give the opportunity to provide a goal for kids who have decided to raise an animal and give them a chance to show their hard work off,” he said. “We’ve seen some heritage breeds coming back that has renewed interest.” Another popular movement that has encouraged the continuation of local animal husbandry is the farm to table movement. “It’s driven a lot of folks to get their kids involved in this. They then start in 4-H or FFA. You learn about where your food is coming from. And farmers markets are good for this, too. FFA classes teach all about this, too.” The all volunteer board may be fun, but it’s a lot of work, too. Dunkel said everyone, including working with the city of Healdsburg, pitches in and makes this possible, working on the next fair as soon as this year’s is done.

Dave Lewers: a Healdsburg original and ag leader his year’s auction is dedicated to Dave Lewers. Lewers, known for his straight talk and straight shooting, who lived by his own letter of the law that accommodated both a certain amount of hell-raising and stern common sense, and who also won praise and awards for a lifetime of agricultural community leadership died unexpectedly on Feb. 6. He was 65. He was born Dec. 22, 1953 in Oregon and moved to Healdsburg as an infant with his parents Gerald and Katy Lewers. Gerald was a rancher, logger and outdoorsman, and Lewers lived much of his life beyond the fence line on his ranch west of Lake Sonoma and on frequent hunting outings all over the west. Lewers graduated from Healdsburg High School in 1972 where he was on the wrestling team and played football. He stayed active in sports, playing for and sponsoring local men’s and coed softball teams as an adult. When Dave’s oldest daughter Sarah started a 4-H project at age 9 in 1988, he began his tenure on the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board. From there, he remained a central figure in local ag youth, auctions and farmer exhibitions. He served on the Sonoma County Fair Board for 18 years, retiring in 2015 after serving as board president. He remained a fixture at annual junior livestock auctions, entertaining bidders with his red, white and blue garb and jumping jack antics, scaling fences and walls to coax higher bids. No one could say it better than Dave’s former schoolmate and family friend Randy Hatcher — “The Lewers were good, hard-working people. Dave’s death is really all of Sonoma County’s loss.”

Gossett was a man of action and great help to fair his year’s fair is dedicated to Carroll Gossett. Gossett passed away in December. He was the man who got things done for his community. Whether it was mowing a church lawn or helping a neighbor load a truck, he was a man of his word and a great help to his community. He helped with the fair for roughly 40 years as well, creating many of the rabbit cages for the kids to house their animals. And true to his follow-through character, he would gladly jump on any other task needed to help the community’s youth. At the end of the fair, he would also buy up a few rabbits, helping youth realize the rewards of hard work and determination. Though he worked a lot helping others, he was also a family man. He was a great husband and father, and a wonderful grandfather.

That’s where you will experience country charm and the long lived community support for this event put on and organized by a dedicated team of HFFCF Board of Directors and numerous volunteers. After 70 years of putting youth and agriculture together and providing a stepping stone for our future farmers and ranchers. FFA and 4-H youth will display their projects at the fair, which officially kicks off after the parade. The Twilight Parade provides entertainment for all ages. Swan Bros. Circus returns to country fair

Zippy and Hi-Tops have big plans and big laughs in store his year’s Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair will have a lot of clowning around, at least from Zippy and Hi-Tops, the clowns of the Swan Brothers Circus. The two-man circus returns to the fair with zany fun, juggling and more. The kid-friendly show is comprised of comedic duo Andy (Zippy) and Mike (Hi-Tops) Swan. The pair will perform magic, balancing and juggling acts and comedy. Audience participation will also be encouraged. And while their circus doesn’t contain lions, tigers or bears, it does contain light-hearted fun for all. According to the Swan Brothers website, “The reaction we get is great,” Andy wrote. “The best thing about what we do is the smiles and laughter from the kids.” The Swan Brothers Circus formed in 1973 when Andy approached Mike with the idea of starting a circus focused on juggling and making people laugh. According to the same site, their first show took place in Wichita Falls, Texas, and since then they've been performing at fairs and festivals across California.

Introducing our HFFCF 2019 Livestock Judges O ur livestock judges are dedicated professionals who do so much more than evaluate the animals our youth bring to the fair. They work with our young people to help them bring out the best in their animals and themselves. We are grateful to the judges for all they do to make this a great experience for our kids.

Swine judge: We are happy to welcome Jon Neugebauer from Fall River Mills, California, for the first time as our judge. He is the happy father of a fourlegged fox terrier named Otis. He raised sheep, cattle and hogs growing up and is a third generation pig farmer. He managed the Swine Units at both Modesto Junior College and Chico State as a student. He is a recent graduate of Chico State with an Ag Business degree. He has worked in close relation with WD Swine farm, No Limits Genetics, Small Town Genetics and Ottenwalter Show Pigs. He currently has a dozen sows at home for show pig purposes that he coordinates with his father. He is a manager of Mountain View farming in Fall River Mills, where they run custom hay, wild rice and custom farming. Beef Judge: We are happy to welcome Travis Heffner as our beef judge this year. Travis grew up in Southern Oregon on a small purebred Hereford and club calf operation. Growing up. Travis was actively involved in many aspects of the cattle industry, including building his own small cowherd, showing in 4-H at the county fair and numerous jackpot shows, and is a member of the Junior Hereford Association. Travis received his Animal Science degree in 2008 from CSU Chico. While attending Chico, he was a member of the 2007 Livestock Judging team. Currently, Travis is the livestock technician for the Beef Unit at Chico State University Farm. After graduation and prior to returning to work at Chico, Travis managed both purebred and commercial herds located in Northern California. He has judged numerous county fairs and jackpots in Northern California and Southern Oregon and currently coaches the livestock judging team for Durham FFA. Travis, his wife Darby and his daughter Hadlee have a small herd of cows that they use to raise calves to sell as show steers and heifers. Pygmy Goat Judge: We are happy to welcome Jaylene Young as our Pygmy goat judge. She is 20 years old and has been showing livestock since she was 9. She has shown pygmy goats, pigs, dairy goats, boer goats, beef cattle, dairy cattle and horses. She has shown Pygmy goats for 11 years and currently owns 25 head.

Her favorite thing about showing Pygmy goats is being able to teach the younger members how to show and properly take care of their animals. She believes that being able to show animals at a young age shapes and teaches kids the fundamentals to be able to show any animal at a competitive level as they get older. She can’t wait to come to the Healdsburg Country Fair to see all the effort our kids have put into their animals.

Sheep and Goat Judge: We are happy to welcome Erica Vietor from Yuba City, California, as our Sheep and Goat Judge this year. Erica attended Modesto Junior College, where she was a west campus intern at the sheep and poultry units. She transferred to CSU Chico and joined the 2017 livestock judging team. She is currently a recruiter at Express Employment, located in Yuba City. While not working at her day job, she assists families in Northern California with feeding, fitting and showing their lambs and goats at various fairs and jackpots. Horse Showman Judge: Michelle Patin is returning to the HFFCF as our Horse Showman judge. Michelle was an exhibitor here at the HFFCF from 200613, showing horses and swine. Michelle’s first love has always been her horses; she started riding at a young age and showing at the age of 9. Michelle has been successful in showing her horses, winning the 4-H Horse Showmanship at HFFCF, Sonoma County Fair and at California State Fair. She has competed at the American Quarter Horse Association’s Youth World Show. She has also won numerous awards with her riding from First Place in Horsemanship at Sonoma County Fair to the Western Riding World Champion title in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Michelle is currently in her second year at California State University Fresno, where she is majoring in liberal studies and rides on the Fresno State Equestrian Team. Being on the team has awarded her with an athletic scholarship, the opportunity to travel (which she loves!) and to continue with her riding. Michelle would love to return to Sonoma County and be a teacher for elementary school age students. She is excited to have this chance to give back to the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair.

Board scholarships help talented trade school-bound seniors he Fair Board awards scholarships to graduating seniors who are either attending a trade school or going on to a two- or four-year college. Scholarships are also awarded to previous recipients of the Fair Board Scholarship who have continued in their education. The scholarship is awarded based on community involvement, a written essay and a personal interview.

Being able to help out these students gives the Fair Board great joy. Each year, we are amazed at the talented students that apply for the scholarships. Helping out these students wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community during the auction.

A note from the Viticulture Committee Pruning Contest winners to be announced May 25 n Jan. 26, the H.F.F.C.F. held its annual Vine Pruning Contest. This year we had 10 competitors. Three from the Warm Springs 4-H club. One from the Lytton Springs 4-H club. And a strong showing of six vine pruners from the Healdsburg FFA chapter. Each competitor demonstrated their ability and knowledge on how to prune cane and cordon trained grapevines precisely, and in a timely manner. Each student completed a written test followed by a safety meeting and pruning demonstration. Then, they were given the command to prune selected grape vines and they did an excellent job!

A brief history of The Healdsburg Tribune Your HFFCF 2019 Parade Marshal he Healdsburg Tribune has been covering the news of Healdsburg for 154 years. In that time, we’ve covered big stories and small stories — from floods and earthquakes, murders and hangings (OK, we haven’t covered one of those in quite awhile) to our coverage of the city hall and the local schools.to our coverage of the city hall and the local schools. Over the years, we’ve also filled our pages with profiles of the interesting people and places that have made Healdsburg such a fascinating place to live. We like to think of ourselves as being a mirror for the town — and if you don’t see yourself reflected in our pages, we’d like to hear about it. A little background on your local paper The Healdsburg Tribune traces its roots to a newspaper founded in Healdsburg in 1865 called the Democratic Standard, an unabashedly big-D Democratic newspaper, which passed through several hands in its first few years. (One partnership ended with the “imprint of the butt of a Colt .44” under one partner’s eye.) In the 19th century, newspapers were decidedly political — and the ancestors of today’s Healdsburg Tribune were no exception. When John G. Howell bought the paper in 1868, he changed its name to the Russian River Flag and its political stance to Republicanism. One of his employees, Felix McGrew, opened a competing Democratic paper called the Healdsburg Enterprise and the two papers duked it out in their editorial pages for several years. “At times, the Enterprise and the Flag would enter into a verbal warfare … A disagreement in civil,

social and political problems would kindle the fire and from an outside observing station it would seem that there would be knives and pistols due any minute, and someone was sure to be butchered,” read an article about the old days from the Healdsburg Tribune in 1940. In 1888, the Meyer family started the Sonoma County Tribune, which changed its name to the Healdsburg Tribune 10 years later. Over the years, several other newspapers rose and fell, including the screamingly racist Sotoyome Scimitar, which ran until 1946. (The editor referred to the newly crowed floral festival queen as a “swarthy dago” – and you can image the choice epithets he reserved for those of a darker hue). Eventually all were subsumed into the paper’s current name, “The Healdsburg Tribune Enterprise and Scimitar.” Several local families owned and ran the paper over the next 40 years, including two former Press Democrat executives, Everett Person and John H.K. Riley, who bought the paper in 1978. In 1986, Person and Riley sold The Healdsburg Tribune to the New York Times, which turned around six months later and sold it to Lesher Communications — a whiplash of political identity worthy of the 19th century. The current owners Rollie Atkinson and Sarah Bradbury (aka Sonoma West Publishers) bought the Healdsburg Tribune from the Beverly and Tom Reeves and family in 2000. Atkinson, a longtime

journalist, who cut his teeth as a newspaper man in Maryland, also purchased Sebastopol Times and the Russian River News (combining them into Sonoma West Times & News), The Windsor Times, and the Cloverdale Reveille. Several fine editors came and went at The Healdsburg Tribune in the following years, but the longest lasting was Ray Holley, who did double duty — managing editor for all four papers and editor of the Healdsburg Tribune — in two stints, working for the paper for more 20 years. (Holley retired from the paper at the end of last year to take a job as communications director for the Sonoma County Library system.) The Healdsburg Tribune’s newest editor is Andrew Pardiac. Pardiac, who hails from Michigan, got his training in journalism during a four-year stint at the Sedona Red Rock News. He combines a copy editor’s eye for detail with a skeptic’s view of government and is looking forward to working with Atkinson to lead the paper into a new age of community journalism.

Animal showings promote youth’s efforts he 70th annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair is about to kick off and we are excited to celebrate the 70 years of HFFCF: Past, Present, & Future! The Livestock and Auction Committee is dedicated to promoting youth in agriculture and what better way than organizing a variety of live animal shows to highlight the many talents of the youth in our community? The exhibitors dedicate many hours to ensuring their livestock projects reach full potential for the fair and like them, the Livestock and Auction Committee members dedicate their attention to every detail to ensure the shows and auction run smoothly. Some of you might notice the absence of our Poultry Show. With

the state’s epidemic of Virulent Newcastle Disease, we felt it was our duty to participate in the highest level of biosecurity recommended by the State Veterinarian by canceling our Poultry Show. We hope that though we are not participating this year, our Poultry Show will be back in full swing next year. We invite you to pull on your boots and come on down to the Rec Park on Thursday, May 23 after the parade to enjoy the festivities and support our exhibitors! Sir Rusty raffle promises beefy prizes his is the 51st year that Sir Rusty has been a part of the fair. Sir Rusty is one of the main fundraisers for the fair. The proceeds from the sales of Sir Rusty tickets help the fair board pay for entertainment, awards and activities that are important in keeping the fair going. Each young exhibitor, FFA and 4-H, who brings a market animal to the fair, is required to sell at least 20 Sir Rusty tickets per animal that they have entered in the auction. The fair board members are required to sell 50 tickets each. The fair board sponsors an award of a belt bucket to the 4H or FFA member who sells the most tickets. This year tickets are selling like crazy. Tom Mauritson sponsors the drawing each year, reimbursing the fair board for its expenses for the prizes, whether cash or meat. The fair board printed 10,000 Sir Rusty tickets this year. A $1 donation entitles you to a chance to win one of two grand prizes of $500 Painted Hills Beef (or $500 cash), or one lamb (or $100 cash).
