Welcome to the 2018 Fair! Welcome message from the mayor of Healdsburg “Bloom where you are planted!” his year’s fair theme, for Healdsburg's 69th annual Future Farmers Country Fair, honors our agricultural roots and the resilience and community we have witnessed this past year: “Sonoma County Strong – Ag Lives On!” Our small town Future Farmers Country Fair begins Thursday, May 24 at 6 p.m. with the Twilight
T
Parade and the festivities and education and fun continues through Saturday, May 26 at Healdsburg’s Recreational Park. I vividly remember my first parade year creating my children’s “Good Beginnings” preschool float and later marching with my Girl Scout troop.
After the parade on Thursday night, we gather at Rec. Park, and return on Friday and Saturday to support our fair; to enjoy our nonprofit vendors’ delicious foods, view farming exhibits, learn about our agricultural heritage, and play games. Join in! On behalf of the
Healdsburg City Council and city staff, I want to express our gratitude for the dedicated, volunteers of the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board of Directors. As we enjoy this special weekend event, we are celebrating and supporting our rural roots, our future farmers, and Healdsburg’s authentic small town agrarian character. See you at the Fair! — Brigette Mansell Mayor, City of Healdsburg
Message from the Future Farmers Country Fair board president onoma County Strong – Ag Lives On.” That is the 69th annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair’s theme. So many folks have been affected by the fires of last year and, agriculture was not excluded. Not only were homes destroyed but barns, equipment of all sorts, vineyards, pasture and, unfortunately, livestock as well. And, if it were not for the brave action of our first responders, it certainly could have been even worse. They fought the flames and saved people and property when and where they could in some truly terrible conditions. I not only speak of our brave law enforcement, EMTs and firefighters but those right amongst us. Friends and neighbors who volunteered without hesitation to help those in need, including rescuing our four-legged friends. The Russian River Riders of Hoof Beat Park and other farms and ranches for example, opened their property to take in many displaced horses, livestock and
S
people. That is why the HFFCF board of directors dedicate this year’s fair to all the first responders. There are too many heroes to recognize in this article. However, one individual contributed in a way that was unique to her trade. Pat Kerrigan of the local radio station 1350 KSRO, was for many the only source of reliable information during the first days of the fire. She relayed timely information on the air for many, many long hours while other media and communication was down. To honor her for her contribution to the community we have asked her to be our world-famous Twilight Parade Marshall. As I mentioned in the beginning, this is the 69th annual fair, truly a genuine Healdsburg tradition. We have been fortunate enough to have a few of the first exhibitors from our first fair in 1950, still helping us out with a project we started and is ready to be read. That’s right, a book! For a donation it will be available at the fair this year. Thanks to Joe Rochioli, Al Greco and Henry
Cornelson’s input from the first years of the fair, we have a great look back at how things used to be. We start the fair with our world-famous Twilight Parade on Thursday. After the parade, stroll down to Recreation Park and enjoy great food and see what our future farmers have been working so very hard to bring to the fair. Friday, you can see these young folks in action as they present their projects to the judges, all the while you can enjoy more food and entertainment. There is plenty to see and do for all ages. Saturday is the big day! Still plenty of food and fun, but we wrap up the fair with an afternoon awards ceremony and evening livestock auction. So please come and show your support of youth in agriculture and an authentic part of our Healdsburg heritage and tradition. We are still here. Sonoma County Strong – Ag Lives On. — HFFCF President Nick Dunkel

Junior Fair Board — The next generation of community leaders he Junior Executive Board is composed of volunteers selected by their peers to represent their clubs at Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board meetings. These volunteers meet prior to the regular board meetings, to talk about their responsibilities and prepare for the upcoming fair. They organize the garden barrel competition, the kids day activities, the petting zoo, adult showmanship, Friday night entertainment, and the cleanup after the fair. They have volunteered for a very big responsibility, and always rise to the occasion with great enthusiasm. Aside from their involvement to organize these events, they are also working diligently with their own exhibits. Each Junior Executive Board member wrote a description about themselves for the fair program, and they all wish you an enjoyable fair.

Judges bring lifetimes of expertise and support to the fair ur livestock judges are dedicated professionals who do so much more than evaluate the animals our youth bring to the fair. They work with our young people to help them bring out the best in their animals and themselves. We are grateful to the judges for all they do to make this a great experience for our kids.
O

Annual buyers’ dinner a tasty pre-auction tradition he last night of the fair, Saturday, May 26, between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. the fair board will host the annual buyers’ dinner. The dinner is held to express our appreciation to the businesses and individuals who have shown support to the local FFA and 4-H groups by attending and investing in the future of the exhibitor.
T
John and Kim Lloyd of Big John’s Market have graciously offered to donate the supplies needed to put on such an affair again this year, and K. King Catering, Kathie King and her crew, have offered their time and service in preparing the dinner. This dinner, let alone this fair, would not be the success it has been over the years without the support of businesses, individuals, and volunteers, and for that we thank you all. Come join the fun, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy a great meal! For more information regarding the auction and this year’s dinner, fair board members will be on hand at Healdsburg’s Recreation Park starting Wednesday, May 23.

Sir Rusty more than a half-century tradition at the fair his is the 52nd year that Sir Rusty has been a part of the fair. Sir Rusty is one of the main fundraisers for the fair. The proceeds from the sales of Sir Rusty tickets help the fair board pay for entertainment, awards and activities that are important in keeping the fair going. Each young exhibitor, FFA and 4-H, who brings a market animal to the fair, is required to sell at least 20 Sir Rusty tickets per animal that they have entered in the auction. The fair board sponsors an award of a belt bucket to the 4-H or FFA member who sells the most tickets overall. This year tickets are selling like crazy. Tom Mauritson sponsors the drawing each year, reimbursing the fair board for its expenses for the prizes, whether cash or meat. The fair board printed 10,000 Sir Rusty tickets this year. A $1 donation entitles you to a chance to win one of two grand prizes of $500 worth of Painted Hills Beef (or $500 cash), or one lamb (or $100 cash). The animals are freezer ready. The Sir Rusty drawing winner is announced during Saturday night’s livestock auction on May 26. (Need not be present to win). The $1 tickets have four great discounted coupons this year. Round Table Pizza, McLea’s Tire and Automotive Center, Costeaux French Bakery and Summer’s Market and Deli. Round Table Pizza is offering $3, $2 and $1 off select pizzas. McLea’s is offering $20 off any automotive repair. Costeaux French Bakery is offering a complimentary cup of house of coffee with

Scholarships are a large part of the fair’s impact on youth ach year the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board awards scholarships to graduating seniors who are either attending a trade school or going on to a two-year or four-year college. Scholarships are also awarded to previous recipients of the Fair Board Scholarship who have continued in their education. The scholarship is awarded based on community involvement, written essay and a personal interview. Being able to help out these students gives the Fair Board great joy. Each year we are amazed at the talented students who apply for the scholarships. Helping out these students wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community during the auction. — The fair board

Vine pruning contest results to be announced May 26 he annual vine pruning contest took place earlier this year on Saturday January 13. Ten competitors from the Healdsburg chapter of the FFA, Healdsburg 4-H, Westside 4-H, Alexander Valley 4-H, and Lytton Springs 4-H came to show their expertise in wine grape pruning. Following a written test, they performed an outstanding demonstration of agricultural prowess by pruning cane and cordon styles of trained grapevines. The competition was close, making for an exciting day in the vineyard. Could there be an upset? The junior members did an excellent job of showing their precision viticulture skills in a timely manner. As always, a big thank you to Hoot Owl Creek and Alexander Valley Vineyards for hosting the event. And a special thanks to our judge, Mark Houser of Hoot Owl Creek and Alexander Valley Vineyards, for his knowledge, guidance and patience. The winners of the contest will be announced at the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair awards ceremony on May 26. For more information about the vine pruning contest and fair, visit www.healdsburgfair.org.
