WELCOMEPAGE TO SONOMA TITLE & COUNTY THE
SONOMA COAST
The Sonoma Coast has always attracted the adventurous spirit. Scenic Highway One winds up, down and around as you ride along this spectacular rugged coastline. State Parks offer numerous opportunities to walk on the beach, climb sand dunes and rocks, and look for tide pools filled with stunning oceanic creatures of all shapes and sizes. Windsurfing, kayaking, and riding horseback on the beach are popular activities year-round in the region’s mild climate...or you can picnic and watch the sunset splash color across the sky and reflect off the waves. Wildlife enthusiasts bring their binoculars to catch migrating whales showing their humps and spouts from December through March and again through the summer. A wide variety of birds travel along the Pacific Flyway of the Sonoma Coast providing the rare opportunity to view Great Blue herons, egrets and hundreds of other species that take advantage of Sonoma County’s rich coastal wetlands. There’s always a reason to visit the Sonoma Coast and feed your soul.
THE
RUSSIAN RIVER
The Russian River Recreation Area is beautiful and packed with adventurous fun. From its mouth at the town of Jenner, the winding Russian River extends eastward through the redwoods and vineyards of Sonoma County. Each year, thousands of “River Rats” enjoy canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and rafting on the river. Navigating the Russian River is not a white water thrill, but a relaxing float through natural beauty. The small towns in and around the Russian River welcome visitors for shopping, dining, sight-seeing or a pleasant evening stroll. Year-round activities include hiking and horseback riding among the giants in Armstrong Redwoods, a preserve with more than 700 acres and thousand-year-old redwood groves. Canoe and boat rentals are available as well for fishing throughout the year. The Russian River Area is an outdoor paradise with spectacular vistas, expansive beaches and towering redwood forests.

WELCOMEPAGE TO SONOMA TITLE & COUNTY THE
SONOMA VALLEY
Visitors have been attracted to the beauty of Sonoma Valley since the Miwok Indians first discovered the healing properties of the natural hot springs which dotted the valley floor. The appearance of the railroad in the late 1800s brought Sonoma Valley within reach of Bay Area families, creating a golden era of hotels, ballrooms and vacation getaways. In the 1960s, this valley truly began to blossom when a now-famous vintner from a neighboring valley successfully challenged French Bordeaux with his California Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Sonoma Valley attracts over two million visitors per year with its alluring historic charm, world class wineries, excellent restaurants, entertaining festivals and some very special events. There is always something fun to do in “The Valley of the Moon” and on Sonoma’s charming and historic plaza downtown.

CLOVERDALE
Known as the place “where the vineyards meet the redwoods,” Cloverdale is Sonoma County’s northern-most town and borders beautiful Mendocino County. You’ll find hospitality at the Wine & Visitor Center and throughout the historic downtown plaza. Enjoy a bevy of hometown antique shops, delicious meals and interesting sights. The Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center has walking maps of historic homes and churches. The Cloverdale Historic Museum is located downtown in the gothic-revival Gould-Shaw House, where you can take a break from shopping to relax in the lovely gardens. The 19th century Victorian recently underwent a million-dollar renovation that includes a climate-controlled environment designed to keep the Cloverdale Historical Society’s historical artifacts in good condition. When the Historical Society opened the newly refurbished Cloverdale historical museum in fall of 2009, it was good timing: Cloverdale was turning 150 years old. To celebrate, the town gave itself a big birthday party along with a community parade. You can view murals of historical scenes of Cloverdale on the north wall of the Sciaini Building at 124 S. Cloverdale Boulevard. They depict early life in Cloverdale and were painted by local artists. A nice fair-weather option is to picnic or take a leisurely stroll along the scenic Russian River at Cloverdale’s River Park, which also has a beach and access for fishing, kayaks and canoes. Check the calendar for one of the many community events held throughout the year. There’s the Fiddle Contest and Festival in January and the venerable Citrus Fair in February. By evening, there are seasonal activities to enjoy in the renovated downtown area and plaza, including a summer entertainment series, Friday Night Live, presented at the Plaza stage and sponsored by the Cloverdale Arts Alliance. The organization also sponsors the RealFlicks series, independent films screened at the Cloverdale Cinema on 2 North & West Sonoma CountyWine Tasting & Touring | sonoma county
the 2nd and 4th Monday and Tuesday of every month. There’s a genuine small-town feel to Cloverdale that recalls a simpler, friendlier time and place. Prepare to be transported back to a relaxed lifestyle that allows for fun and uncomplicated touring and adventure.
GEYSERVILLE
About 80 miles north of San Francisco is the town of Geyserville. Formerly known as Clairville Station, its name was eventually changed after a man tracking a grizzly bear discovered steam vents and hot springs in a narrow canyon east of town. While not technically geysers, the name stuck and these features became a sightseeing attraction. By 1863, a stage line ran on a route between Healdsburg and a resort at “The Geysers.” It is a peaceful, colorful community with the feel of an earlier age. Annual events include the May Day Festival in spring and the Fall Colors and Vintage Car Show in October. Geyserville and its environs are rich with wineries, bed and breakfast inns, restaurants, shops and art galleries. It is a pleasant place to have a picnic, take a bicycle tour, canoe on the upper reach of the Russian River, or enjoy boating at nearby Lake Sonoma.
HEALDSBURG
The charming and historic town of Healdsburg is tucked between three gorgeous valleys: Alexander, Russian River and Dry Creek. The Russian River itself carves a sinuous border around the south end of town after it passes behind the forested cone of Fitch Mountain. Many of the names in Healdsburg reflect the people who settled here and built the town and its reputation into a thriving but friendly city. Healdsburg is surrounded by world-class wineries. Its Spanish-style town plaza is rimmed with a fantastic array of shops, cafes, galleries, spas, restaurants and winery tasting rooms. The natural beauty of this area inspires sculptors, artists, photographers and artisans from every genre. They show their work in exciting gallery settings around the plaza and nearby. In season, you can enjoy free weekly public concerts in the park or visit the downtown farmers market on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Healdsburg’s appeal stems from its friendly nature, proximity to outdoor adventure, rich cultural offerings and wine country flavors.

MARK WEST
The Mark West area lies between North Santa Rosa and Windsor. Along the east side of the Santa Rosa plain, this area contains the smaller, unincorporated districts of Larkfield and Wikiup. Quiet suburban neighborhoods mix with open space, rural properties and a few vineyards. The land is dotted with live oaks and grassy fields, with the hills being more thickly wooded. Wikiup’s community features a 9-hole golf course and the Wikiup Tennis & Swim Club. Take Mark West Springs Road and Porter Creek Road to the Petrified Forest, an attraction that deals with the geologic history of the broader region.
SANTA ROSA
The largest city in Sonoma County, Santa Rosa is an urban blend of art, culture, shopping, dining and attractions. Tour the home and gardens of famed horticulturist Luther Burbank, who introduced more than 800 varieties of plants, fruits and vegetables to the world. Beloved cartoonist and longtime resident Charles Schulz also left his mark on Sonoma County; you can see his Peanuts legacy at the Charles M. Schultz Museum and Ice Arena.

The old train depot has been converted into a bustling Visitor Center that exhibits the county’s many attractions. Greeting visitors in Depot Park are life-sized bronze statues of Charlie Brown and Snoopy from a grateful community. You simply won’t want to miss the treasures of Railroad Square!
WINDSOR North of Santa Rosa you will find Sonoma County’s newest city, Windsor. It actually has roots going back to 1855, but was only incorporated in 1992. Early settler Hiram Lewis gave it the name Windsor because it reminded him of the wide-open English countryside surrounding Windsor Castle. In 2010, the Windsor Historical Society opened its museum in the Hembree House, a restored former doctor’s home built in 1931. Now called the Hembree House Cultural Center, you’ll find rotating shows put together by the Historical Society along with the George

WELCOME TO THE WINE COUNTRY
North Sonoma County Wine Country is framed by forests of towering redwoods and vineyard-studded hills and valleys. It is as rich in its history as in its world-renowned wines. There are seven American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in this region of Sonoma County. A destination for Italian immigrants at the turn of the last century, winemaking has taken place here for over 130 years. Known for their hospitality and relaxed atmosphere, many wineries offer picnic grounds and vineyard tours. Some even have facilities to accommodate a wine country wedding!
For wine lovers, the appeal of the Chalk Hill region is driven by highly esteemed Sauvignon Blancs, powerful Chardonnays, and defining Cabernet Sauvignons whose grapes thrive on the tawny slopes. Cabernet Francs and Merlots also do well in this appellation. The somewhat wild and hilly terrain seems untamed compared to other vineyard landscapes in the region. There is plentiful wildlife and not much development. Wineries here hold fewer public events and bicyclists are drawn to the winding roads with little traffic. Other agricultural affairs in the Chalk Hill area include nurseries, specialty vegetable farming, and olive orchards for olive oil production.
DRY CREEK VALLEY
ALEXANDER VALLEY
The dramatic beauty and allure of the Dry Creek Valley encompasses lush vineyards that extend from the magnificent valley floor into the gently rolling hills, producing grapes of extraordinary quality and character. The natural advantages of an ideal blend of climate, soil, and exposure help produce the truly exceptional wines for which Dry Creek Valley is known, both locally and globally.
The Alexander Valley is an important and sought-after source of premium wine grapes for winemakers throughout California. It received formal recognition as an American Viticultural Area in 1984 and now boasts 15,000 acres of wine grape vineyards.
While its far-flung reputation for wine may be modern, the roots of Dry Creek Valley quality go back 135 years to the first vineyard established in 1870. Dry Creek Valley was among the first regions to receive formal recognition as an American Viticultural Area in 1983. Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc continue to be this appellation’s bestknown wines, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc from this area also are garnering great respect for their exceptional quality.
Discover the beautiful Alexander Valley with its unique and superior wines. The wineries of this extraordinary viticultural appellation work together to share their special histories, time-honored traditions and smart innovations with visitors who come from all around the world.
One of the most scenic wine regions in the world, the Alexander Valley viticultural area includes both the valley floor and hills to the east and west, with some vineyards attaining an elevation as high as 2,000 feet. Soil types range from volcanic ash to gravelly alluvial fans to silty sedimentary soils. The growing season is long and reliably uniform. Cabernet Sauvignon is the leading varietal of Alexander Valley. Along with other varietals commonly associated with this appellation, such as Merlot, Zinfandel and Chardonnay, the wineries here produce many others, including Viognier, Pinot Blanc, Shiraz and Sangiovese, further enhancing the region’s reputation for quality and diversity.
CHALK HILL
The Chalk Hill appellation takes its name from its hillsides that are composed of 200 million-year-old volcanic ash. These offer excellent drainage and sunny exposures. In fact, its location is the warmest in the Russian River Valley, with hills preventing the intrusion of coastal fog. Chalk Hill was declared a separate, unique viticultural area within the Russian River AVA in 1983.

GREEN VALLEY
This appellation is a small designation contained within the southwest Russian River AVA. It is the coolest and foggiest region of the Russian River Valley and is bordered by Sebastopol, Occidental and Forestville. Atascadero Creek runs through the length of it. The area is predominantly made up of the Goldridge soil type, a fine sandy loam over fractured sandstone derived from the remains of an ancient inland sea that slowly emptied into the Pacific three to five million years ago. In the early 1900s, a Sebastopol newspaper editor coined the term “Goldridge” to reflect the booming success of the many fruit growers whose orchards thrived along the hills that run southwest from the Russian River through Graton and Sebastopol.
WINE APPELLATIONS
Both soil and climate suit Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, which are vinted into both still and sparkeling wines. Other varietals that do well here are cool-climate Syrah and Zinfandel clones.
KNIGHTS VALLEY
Visitors to Knights Valley will find an unspoiled landscape, which is nestled almost like a Shangri-la in the hilly Mayacamas Range. The warmest of Sonoma County’s viticultural areas, Knights Valley derives its heat from its lofty perch, high on hills beyond the reach of the Pacific Ocean’s influence. The area’s eastern edge borders Napa Valley and its fertile volcanic soils are derived from ancient volcano uplifts and eruptions in the Mayacamas mountain range. Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and PetiteVerdot are grown in the 2,000 acres planted to vineyards. These along with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay,Viognier, Syrah, thrive in a climate featuring warm days and cool nights. Knights Valley was named for Thomas B. Knight, a participant in the California Bear Flag Revolt at Sonoma. This appellation was among the original five Sonoma County AVAs to be designated in 1983.
ROCKPILE
In the northwestern reaches of Sonoma County, on hardscrabble ridgelines overlooking Lake Sonoma, the county’s newest viticultural area sits. The name comes from a cattle and sheep ranch that once spread over 20,000 acres of this remote area. Rugged rock outcroppings are joined by shallow soils with very little silt or sand, lying on top of clay subsoil. Although cooled by coastal breezes, the appellation’s minimum 800-foot growing elevation is above the fog; 95-percent of the vineyards are at more than 1,000 feet in elevation. The extra sun exposure ripens red grape varieties to peerless perfection. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon do exceptionally well in this terrain that generates concentrated characteristics in the fruit. Local lore has it that legendary Sheriff Tennessee Bishop put prisoners to work grading roads to his mountain ranch here and the convicts gave it the moniker “Rock Pile.”
RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY The Russian River Valley has a rich tradition of farming and is one of the premier wine growing regions in the world today. Winegrowers include both direct descendents of the Italian-American growers who established farms more than a hundred years ago, as well as many of the more recent innovators who are responsible for the rebirth of premium winemaking in the 1970s and 1980s. This centrally located appellation accounts for about one-sixth of the area planted to vineyards in Sonoma County. The Russian River Valley appellation includes the sub-AVAs of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. Deposits from the meandering Russian River, geologic plate shifts and volcanic eruptions created three primary soil types—loam sandstone (Goldridge soil), clay-based Sebastopol soil, and alluvial soil along the river’s fertile benchlands. The area’s climate, with its cool foggy mornings and warm afternoons, favors early-ripening varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Gewürztraminer.
SONOMA COAST This AVA comprises more than half a million acres, stretching from San Pablo Bay on the south to the Mendocino County border on the north, bordering the Pacific coastline of Sonoma County. A host of micro-climates are contained within this large appellation, parts of which also overlap with other Sonoma County appellations. Petitions have been submitted for sub-AVAs within this large region. The Fort Ross-Seaview AVA may be the first to gain Federal approval. Cold-climate, estate-bottled producers scattered across this area have roughly 7,000 acres vineyards planted, most of them above the marine layer and fog line. Cool temperatures and relatively high rainfall characterize the area’s weather and lead to slow grape maturation. Soils of the Sonoma Coast are rocky and well-drained. Slow ripening varietals that that have been developed for cool climates thrive here, such as the famously finicky Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.

Today the valley is blanketed by vineyards and it is known world-wide as one of the premiere wine appellations of the world. The Alexander Valley AVA is 22 miles in length and varies in width from two to seven miles. Warmerclimate loving varietals flourish here, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Wheat was a major product of Alexander Valley until the 1870s, when depletion of the soil led farmers to try other crops, such as hops, prunes and pears. Over time, wine grapes came to be the agricultural hallmark of the valley.

Wine Tasting Tips The first rule of wine tasting? Have fun! Wine is a complex and rewarding beverage, and tasting it is a very personal experience. These tips can help you make the most of it.
SIGHT Look at the wine in your glass, preferably against a white background. Check the clarity and note whether the color changes where the wine meets the side of the glass.
SMELL The wine has been in the bottle for months or years and contact with air will release its aromas. Swirl your glass before breathing in the wine’s bouquet. Identify the types of smells you sense—fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices or even flowers.
TASTE Take a sip and roll the wine around in your mouth. Keep in mind that the sense of smell heavily influences taste. Decide what flavors you tasted and how the wine felt in your mouth. Was it tart or smooth? Did it feel light or big-bodied? Think about what foods would go well with this wine.
Experience desired Making, and enjoying, great wine is a hands-on experience. Our Single Vineyard Cabernets are handcrafted by artisans with a passion for perfection. Experience wine like no other in a place like no other. Allocated only here. Just for you.
Place Matters – Sonoma County
ADVICE Plan for quality rather than quantity. A leisurely, attentive tasting at two or three wineries with a meal planned in between can give you a wonderful experience. Some wineries offer in-depth tastings if you call ahead to book an appointment. Whatever route you take, be sure to take your time enjoying Wine Country.

WELCOME PAGE TO SONOMA TITLE & VALLEY
Renowned as a wine-grape growing region, Sonoma Valley—also known as Valley of the Moon—attracts wine lovers from around the world. Yet, while it may be wine that brings the visitor here, there’s a lot more to love about this southeastern corner of Sonoma County. The scenery, the climate, the fabulous cuisine and artisan food products, great recreational and shopping opportunities, film festivals and more make Sonoma Valley a destination that fulfills every visitor’s itinerary for a pleasurable stay.
SONOMA
Downtown Sonoma is filled with early California history, being the site where the northern-most Franciscan mission was established and also where the Bear Flag revolt was launched by insurrectionists against Mexican control of California. Today the town of Sonoma is a walkable collection of eateries, shops, galleries and historic sites. The 8-1/2 acre town plaza, anchored by the basalt stone City Hall, is a city park with a duck pond, fountain, amphitheater, meandering pathways, lawns and large shade trees. The plaza is the setting for the weekly Tuesday evening summer farmers market, often with accompanying live music, and is also home to several annual festivals. The annual Ox Roast is held on the first Sunday in June. Fourth of July features a traditional parade and pyrotechnic extravaganza; the Vintage Festival, which began in 1897, celebrates the harvest on the last weekend in September. The candlelight procession to the Christmas service at Mission San Francisco Solano is a lovely, heartwarming Sonoma holiday tradition. Whatever time of year, there is always something happening in this historic and beautiful town.
KENWOOD
Kenwood sits at the north end of Valley of the Moon, framed by mountains and vineyard vistas and is home to award-winning wineries. The area is known for its mild climate and volcanic soils, an ideal recipe for creating the perfect bottle of wine. A quiet town, Kenwood is rich with history. Kenwood is located on the Rancho Los Guilicos Mexican land grant. In 1887, the Sonoma Land & Improvement Company, which owned the property on which the town now sits, laid out lots in anticipation of the railroad which would arrive the following year. The infant community tried on many
names: Rohrerville, for one of the owners of the land company; Los Guilicos, and then South Los Guilicos, for the Mexican land grant. A number of townspeople were unhappy, complaining “Guilicos” was hard to pronounce. Around 1895 a vote was taken to change the name again. One story says that Kenwood won because many of the settlers had come from Kenwood, Illinois. Another traces the choice to the fact that many landowners in the area were from old English families and so were familiar with London’s Kenwood House. It is possible that both stories are true, and the name’s permanence stemmed from its acceptability to different groups. This family oriented village is home to about 1,500 residents. Two beautiful state parks—Annadel and Sugarloaf—border Kenwood and provide access to hiking, biking and camping. Sugarloaf is also home to the Ferguson Observatory, with one of the largest amateur telescopes open to the public in the U.S. A number of special events occur in Kenwood each year, including Heart of the Valley Barrel Tasting and the Festival of Lights in late November. The hamlet of Kenwood and its surrounding landscapes are uniquely beautiful among the treasures of the Valley of the Moon.
GLEN ELLEN
Founded in the 1850s by French pioneer Joshua Chauvet, Glen Ellen has had famous residents, including renowned writer/adventurer Jack London and author M.F.K. Fisher. From the early 1900s, visitors flocked to resorts here, arriving via train to bathe in the warm summer creeks. Today’s travelers also make their pilgrimage to this appealing village with its quaint shops and Sonoma Creek passing through the old water wheel of Chauvet’s historic grist mill. Foremost among this hamlet’s attractions is the physical beauty that surrounds it. Two nearby botanical attractions are Bouverie Wildflower Preserve and Quarryhill Botanical Garden, which has a huge collection of rare and endangered Asian species planted among its 20 serene acres. Jack London State Park provides hiking and horseback riding trails that traverse the valley floor, surrounding hillsides, and fascinating historic sites such as the ruins of London’s Wolf House. Visitors also are lured by Glen Ellen’s gastronomic delights, which range from fine chocolates to freshly pressed olive oil.

Food &Wine Pairing In contemporary food and wine pairings, the “white with light and red with rich” rule is too general to accomplish a match that brings out the best in a marriage of food and wine. Certain foods have affinities for certain varietals and vice versa—a good pairing will elevate the flavor of both food and wine beyond what either of them would be alone. If the chef’s menu or a sommelier hasn’t already suggested a particular wine, try these guidelines to find a good match.
Rosé and blush wines: especially refreshing on warm days or evenings, try these wines with cured or smoked meats, barbequed foods; Asian flavors; bell peppers, carrots, ripe melon, pears and berries. Pinot Noir: smoked meat flavors (especially bacon); duck; wild mushrooms; cherries. Zinfandel: cooked tomato sauces, mild salsas; barbequed foods; bacon, pork, sausages, beef and chicken; dishes with fresh herbs.
Cabernet, Merlot and red Bordeaux-style Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and spar- blends: beef, lamb, wild game; rich foods kling wines: salads, especially fruits and (foie gras, gratins, stews); olives, lentils, eggvegetables with vinaigrettes or bright citrus sauces; shellfish, trout, tuna, chicken and white cheeses; fried or spicy foods; “difficult” foods, such as artichokes and asparagus.
Chardonnay: the characteristics of this varietal can range from fruit and citrus notes to buttery or oakey finishes, so knowing the style of the chardonnay will help. Good bets are stronger seafood (sea bass, salmon and swordfish); chicken; corn; stone fruits.
plant, raddichio and greens like chard. Finally—for all varietals—keep in mind that sauces made with wine are best when accompanied by the same type of wine. Whether it’s a picnic in the park, appetizers at an event, or a special meal at a fine restaurant, raise a glass of Sonoma County’s finest and toast to the bounty of the county!

Southeastern SonomaWine Appellations SonomaValley is the largest of four appellations in southeastern Sonoma County, with over 15,000 acres of vineyards. Also known as Valley of the Moon, it is open at both the north and south ends, which allows for the flow of cooler evening breezes. Soils are fertile and loamy with good moisture retention. Lead varietals include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel.
Bennett Valley
lies at the northwestern tip of Sonoma Valley, below three mountain peaks—Bennett Mountain, Taylor Mountain and Sonoma Mountain. With about 650 acres of vineyards, this is one of the smallest appellations in California.
It has well-drained bench land soils, where a number of varietals thrive, such as Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.
Los Carneros is bordered along the south by San Pablo Bay. The vineyards receive the cooling effects of the marine layer. Its climate compares to that of both the Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France. Two types of soils predominate: the tancolored, marine-derived and calcium-rich Haire and the blacker Diablo series formed by marsh sediments. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay represent a majority of 28 varietals grown here. Once a sheep-herding area, Los Carneros means “the rams” in Spanish.
Sonoma Mountain is part of a range that runs along the western edge of the Valley of
the Moon. Vineyards can attain elevations of up to 1,400 feet and are steep-sloped, composed largely of well-drained volcanic soil, with eastern exposures to catch the fog-free morning sun.
