AFTER THE RAIN Lisa-Marie Christopher
Where does the rainbow end, in your soul or on the horizon? Pablo Neruda 1904-1973
“After the rain, is an exhibition of a sequence of pieces where Lisa-Marie explores the power of feelings through the use of a spiritual language. She anchors her work on the symbolic meaning of traditional links with personal spiritualism and physical things around us, winding down her journey of ups and downs in the search for hope and joy between human beings. Transforming this to this display of mix media pieces incorporating colour resembling emotions, she invites her audience to look through the glass and get in touch with their emotional side.
Lisa-Marie Christopher A r ti s t S t a t e m e n t In her current work, Christopher has decided to continue to use this theme of human emotion. Through varied feelings which are very humanistic, and which occur normally through the occurrences in everyday life, she hopes to bring some sense and a feeling of semblance and order to these times. Couple this with some of the works preceding a metaphysical intent and nature, with this very human underbelly, a very enigmatic sense is created. Enigmatic in that the themes and ideas drift and change but ultimately carry an air of these three factors co-joining and then breaking apart and then joining again at different times within the portfolio. By continuing to use this “motif” which pops up every so often, she hopes to invite the viewer again to engage with the pieces in a personal way and encourages them to place themselves within the works. By doing this she hopes and urges the viewer to empathize with the works, and actually put themselves in touch with their own feelings as depicted through the pieces. Her continued interdisciplinary practice has this time seen her move more into the inclusion of glass. Her early start of the new Chapters series has the first addition of “… And So the Story Begins…” an indication of the possible direction her practice can take, to continue to give her audience meaning with something as tactile as a glass book. (She is not averse to audience interaction and welcomes again, touch and feel to be a part of this piece). The use of these glass books to give the viewer a further reminiscent feel of times and days past, (where the use of books was more commonplace), in depicting, telling and recording a story, could be the beginning of a whole new collection in which Christopher keeps this ongoing engagement through a tactile thing. Tactile in that a book’s pages are meant to be turned. Christopher also hopes the start of the Chapters series will give her audience an attempt to capture these important moments (chapters in life) in a forever frozen thing.
