The land-in-Between Each of the models is defined through the development of a specific typological approach providing the main design principles. In relation to this typological elaboration of the models, also programmatic directives have been developed providing an assessment of the spatial claims.
A design experiment on the spatial transformation of the enclosed urban fringe

The three models that are presented to you deal with the problems that have emerged with the development of the urban fringe into an enclosed urban fringe. While the left column introduces the specific potentials that are to be found in each of the models seperately, this section will present to you the generic principles for enclosed urban fringe developments. The generic principles are introduced as conclusions that apply to all the models.

Design model: Vlietscape
Generic Design principles
Design Principles:
1. Integration of the flowscape with the local context
- Establish a strong contrast between urban and rural land-uses within urbanised areas. - Spatial organisation by country estates and polder landscape. - Estates as Foci along the Vliet. - Polder parcels provide a variation of plantation.

To re-arrange the spatial organisation from the Vlietweg the main recommendation is to threat the re-organisation of infrastructure as an integrated assignment in the development of the zone.
2. Permeability & internal connectivity Programmatic opportunities: -Re-working of the landscape as a production landscape allowed by ecological or global climate objectives. -Residential quality in correlation with isolation: Using the reference of the former peat reclamation lakes the ‘production polder’ could provide an interesting basis for an dynamic residential landscape Source: Google earth

3. Road-allotment relation: routing & public space
Design model: International Zone
More attention for road-allotmentrelationships provides the opportunity to: - Stage programme along the flowscapes of Vliet, A4 and urban motorway by routing, following the example of estates as foci along the Vliet - Develop a more qualitative public space along the main infrastructure.
Design Principles: - Provide a clear character to the Coulisse and define their relation with the urban occupation that encloses them. - Provide a coherent structure (design language) to the urban Boulevard, the central artery in the new system of secondary roads and in addition provide in a differentiation of other routes. Programmatic opportunities:

- Introduce recreational program or ecological and cultural historical objectives to activate the Coulisse. - Define the Coulisse by residential program or program with an economical function. - Allow Coulisse to accommodate institutions or retail. programs that contribute to a staging of the different routes.

An extended model
- Introduce the infrastructural lines to organize the development of the Vlietzone in different smaller zones that confront each other and allow developments along the parkway.
The thesis links the generic principles to other fringe areas with similar characteristics such as the A15 zone in Rotterdam and the Brettenzone in Amsterdam.
Programmatic opportunities: - The Vliet as linear route with small recreational program. Allowing residential program, supported by cultural historical objectives. - The Parkway developments structures larger recreational program in relation with offices, retail and program oriented on a regional scale. - Residential program will be supported in the intermediate zone between the A4 and the Vlietzone. * A large scale (international) event program will be required to restructure the A4 infrastructure.
Ultimately the thesis argues for a definition of the fringe from the flowscape, in relation to open landscape enclaves and urban fabric, as a binding elements in the future fringe.
