Urban fabric
Defined from a regional perspective the structures of open landscape, urban fabric and infrastructure have been addressed for their potential to organize development in the context of a diffused Randstad territory. These structures have been defined by Velde & Wit (2009), Tummers (1997) and Boeck (2007) as the basic forms that set up the urbanized landscape.

Infrastructure The design experiment sets out three spatial models, providing a directive for the spatial organisation of the Vlietzone, based upon the basic forms and three different mobility scenarios that have been picked up from the MIRT verkenning Haaglanden (2010) that direct the re-arrangement of the A4 motorway structure. Only with the development of the models using different design techniques an assessment of programmatic opportunities will be provided.

The main assignment for the A4/Vlietzone relates to the three issues presented that provide in the problem definition for the project: > The first is the position of the open landscape and infrastructure -as vessels of collective life- within a diffuse urbanised territory. > The second is the local condition of the site: fragmented, cluttered and developed according to functional zoning plans not guided by a qualities design for the public space. > Finally apparent unrelated developments, form different periods, have been assembled on a limited territory and together make up the spatial characteristics of a site that is a very likely target for a range of spatial developments that presents a complex list of choices

Applying the technique of Palimpsest: Stratification of past & present; redefine historical and new layers in order to reconfigure the whole.
How to address the spatial transformation of the site in relation to its intrinsic characteristics and future spatial claims is the relevant question for this graduation project. By mapping the A4 Vlietzone and its development - within the larger context of the region to the local spatial conditions - the problem definition for this project will be defined.

While the Vlietzone has in geographical terms become a central zone in the Haaglanden region, still the Vlietzone can be perceived as the urban fringe of the city of the Hague with the accompanying typical more extensive land-uses, such as as golf courts, allotment gardens, a theme park, light industrial areas, all with some meadows in between.

Approach: The experiment
Yp
This graduation project focuses on the A4/Vlietzone, an area of approximately 570 ha. large, located in the South Western edge of the municipality of the Hague which is enclosed by the Vliet - an old historic waterway, with cultural heritage value - and the national highway A4. More recently the site got enclosed in-between the old urban fabric of Voorburg and the recent Vinex extension areas of Ypenburg and Leidschenveen.
