DIPLOMA DESIGN THESIS | MARINE PARK FACILITIES & ECOTOURISM RESORT ON KELYFOS ISLAND (TURTLE) IN CHALKIDIKI

Supervisor: Nikolaos Tsinikas Goup Work: Sofia Symeonidou, Theocharis Theodoulidis

The Island Kelyfos (Turtle) is an uninhabited Island in Toroneos Gulf in Chalkidiki. Kelyfos size is approximately 700 acres and the heighest altitude is on 148 meters. The main idea of the project is the creation and design of an ecotourism resort with marine facilities on the Island of Kelyfos. Both the geomorphologic features of the ground and the needs of the island are outlined by the whole island’s masterplan. The biggest part of the island is covered with trees and woodland. The rest of it, are uniquely designed with the specific areas: a) The diving centre at the foot of the island, in an area which is called “NICHI” (“CLAW”) b) The research and athletic centre c) The residential area, in an area which is named “RACHI”, (“STITCH”) d) Water sports facilities, in an area which is named “KEFALOS”, (“HEAD”) Moreover, the whole project includes a lighthouse, a camping area and an area of installation of mechanical facilities (desalination facility, wind park, etc.). The whole project has sustainable design and a friendly character to the environment. Generally, the geomorphologic features, the terrain and the altitudes of the ground inspire the architectural design. It has done a specific study of the ecological attitude of the island.

The interaction between these units is defining three distinct parts (commercial, rental and extended-family ownership) that generate the morphology of the building. Once replicated in a broader scale, these correlations moves out can create an entire neighborhood that challenges social boundaries.

The extented family house is located on the top of the building. Each of them has a core element that function as a contemporary interpretation of the traditional courtyard. A common space patio that gives an introverted character to the house. The middle layer of the building is the rental zone that offers several appartments to a variety of habitants. At the ground floor is juxtaposed the commercial or service zone.

Based on the approach strategy formulated in, the main goals is to translate the divergent scheme into a design proposal that is economically viable and architecturally articulated, showing how this composes an urban design scheme both at the architectural and urban scale and demonstrating the spatial and social qualities which are offered.

Existing Boundary

Directed by: Marc Angélil, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes and Something Fantastic in Collaboration with Cluster Cairo Goup Work: Christina Lazou, Sofia Symeonidou, Shinji Terada

The current gated exclusive compound

The SODIC area presents an extreme situation of exclusive, mainly gated compounds targeting wealthy upper classes. Challenging the complex and largely unfair relationships between different classes, the project is aiming to transform the existing boundaries that separate communities. Spaces and uses are designed, turning the dividing wall into a habitable border for both sides. Formed by a rearrangement of existing facilities as well as new structures, it establishes a new edge. There is a benevolent duplicity in its design. Facilities appear intended for the obvious clients -the wealthy- yet offer new spaces and possibilities for the secret clients -the great variety of people in the area serving the wealthy.

The New Boundary

The new boundary formed by a rearrangement of existing facilities and new structures allows for inclusivity in the usage of space. 20

Living in the desert does not have to occur in a desolate, fragmented and segragated form, but could happen in a lively, urban and diverse environment. Instead of the current ideal and model of the exclusive compound, this project proposes inclusivity through a diversity of social classes and usages. By redefining the contour of the field, redrawing the boundaries and imagining anew current practices, the goal is to generate a productive symbiosis among inhabitants of various backgrounds. Inclusivity can be spatially expressed through tactics that, once adopted, will result in a classically attractive yet resistant development model.

In the given site, following the topography, this new development model is applied. Four districts are organized filled with the existing types slightly transformed - villas, townhouses, apartments and mixed use area - surrounded by the new type of boundary. People living and working in the area are no longer separated by an ‘offensive’ wall but can contrariwise occasionally meet and interact in the new space suggested at the edge.

The new boundary offers habitable spaces for both sides while allowing a connection between them occasionally. 21

The figure plan emphasizes the new type of edge for gated compounds.

The Existing Border The New Boundary 1. Villas: The design empasizes the site’s topography. On the top, a park -instead of a golf course- is designed as part of the boundary. 2. Townhouses: The area is designed as an extension of Allegria. The new boundary creates a possibility of infiltration of activity to the exclusive compound. 3. Apartment Blocks: The blocks form the boundaries. 4. Mixed-use: The area consists of a mix of existing building 22 of Sixth of October city (from private apartments to types public housing) with the commercial uses facing the streets.

Project proposal | Tsamourtzi Architectural Office F I R S T F LO O R

The hotel resort is located in Thassos Island, bringing a Mediterranean modern style to this North Aegean Island. The project area is 750.00 sqm. Essentially, the hotel is over three floors, complemented by an outdoor pool. Facilities such as reception lounge, pool bar, spa, fitness are the must have programs in this hotel. One of the greatest advantages of the hotel is flexibility. Each department and apartment of the hotel has fluid layout and easy access points between the interior ancvd outside, with the wealth of terraces, loggias and verandas. Local building codes and the desire to draw upon traditional materials give the direction to the use of a restrained palette of materials, with many of the most visible walls in local limestone, plus roughcast plaster and wood for other surfaces. The whole project has the charm of a peaceful community suited absolutely to the natural environment of the Island.

PROFESSIONAL WORK | PRIVATE HOUSE PROJECT in Chalkidiki.

N Project proposal | Individual Work The sophisticated design of the house takes the idea of a mediterranean courtyard next to the sea, more specifically in the area of Chalkidiki and applies it to a very contemporary residence. The whole house is 245.00 sqm. This family house project is positioned at the highest point with a swimming pool and a garage at the lowest. The vast majority of the living space and the main bedroom are located on the ground floor. The house’s interior are minimal in nature, with open-plan arrangement to much of the main living zones, including the kitchen. Glass walls and doors help bring light into the heart of the building. The concrete walls and the two timber boxes form a key architectural element, helping to frame views
