ACOUSTIC STRATEGY: Multiple acoustical strategies were utilized throughout the space including felt baffles, felt wrapped ceiling panels, and linear wood systems. This was to combat the open layout within the original gymnasium structure and the diverse range of programs to be implemented in the new center.
EXISTING ART: Re-creation by Kate Kaman The existing scultpure in the space inspired the whimsical, comforting color pallette. The soft shapes of the african-inspired design are utilized in the lighting and furniture choices of the new women’s center.

FURNITURE: Soft shapes contrast the linear architecture and create a welcoming, ‘homey’ feeling. Flexibile pieces give the user a sense of control and adapt to the variety of programs.
LIGHTING: The lighting strategy reflects various types of spaces and their functions. Brighter task lighting is used in work spaces, classrooms, and fitness space. Ambient lighting is primarily used in more social spaces and areas of relaxation. Dimmers are used in spaces with flexible program needs such as the yoga studio.
WELLNESS: As part of the centers focus on health and wellness, the design will incorporate WELL Building standards. These features include: - Non-toxic / Zero VOC finishes - Water Hydration Stations - Exclusively healthy eating options - Bike Storage at entrance - Encouraging fitness for both visitors and staff - Incorporating biophilia and interior plants. - Offices with outdoor views / natural daylighting Outdoor gardens will encourage interaction with nature while promoting self-sufficiency and healthy eating habits.
SUSTAINABILITY: The design takes advantage of sustainable and natural materials such as terrazzo flooring, wood finishes, and cradleto-cradle certified carpet. The proposed design will also take advantage of natural lighting and ventilation and utilize automatic occupancy and daylight sensors. Coated glass louvres on the exterior of the building will shade the inteiror, reducing glare and energy use. This motorized system will automatically adjust to the sun path throughout the day for efficient shading and cooling.
