The 2011 Colorino Taffe Ta', Poggiopiano's 100% Colorino, is a real stunner. Inky blue/purplish fruit, smoke, tar, graphite, licorice and menthol saturate the palate as this dramatic, ripe wine shows off its unmistakable personality. Colorino is most often seen as a blender with Sangiovese in Chianti Classico, rarely on its own. Poggiopiano's version is a real turn-on and one of the most unique, riveting wines being made in Tuscany today. The style is unctuous and opulent, yet all the elements fall into place effortlessly. The 2012 Rosso di Sera, Poggiopiano's Sangiovese/Colorino blend, is dark and powerful throughout. In classic Poggiopiano style, there is no shortage of intensity or opulence, but the 2012 also feels a touch forward, while the tannins are a bit dry and not as polished as they can be. Dark red cherry, espresso, spice, new leather and licorice are some of the notes that flesh out in the 2012 Chianti Classico Tradizione. Voluptuous and racy to the core, the 2012 is a terrific example of the year. As always, the style is rich, warm and built on enveloping texture.
