editorial content The content featured in the magazine will focus on the arts as a whole, and will include various forms such as music; dance; acting; photography; fine art; fashion; graphic design; video and film making; architecture; illustration and so on. Each article will provide key details about the artist, i.e. name, contact details, what they study etc. In order to make each issue more focussed and the content easier to source, every issue will have a primary focus on a specific city/area in the UK. This will only take up a section of the magazine and national content will follow the area based content. In terms of sourcing content, there will be two main ways in which this will happen. The first being submissions via the website/by email which takes pressure off the editorial team to find new and exciting features/artists. A selection of these submissions will then

be taken forward to the print magazine. The other way by which content will be sourced is by research carried out by the editorial team, which will involve contacting universities and colleges as well as scouring through blogs and online portfolios. The following pages are examples of content and page layout.

online Directory Mag has an online website which will feature a regular stream of content throughout the year in between issues as well as student work that doesn’t get featured in the print magazine. As the magazine grows the website will be divided into categories of students work. For example, after a few cities have been covered in the print magazine and a lot of online submissions have been received, there is the option to categorise website content into cities/universities/areas. There is also the opportunity to categorise by discipline, i.e. music, fine art, photography etc. Regular blog posts and guest blogs will also be published on the website in order to give the reader extra content that they would not usually get in the print magazine.

It will also feature sneak peaks or the upcoming issue, allowing readers to see what kind of content is coming up. All details of past, present and future publications will be found on the website, as well as release dates. Any news and events will be reported on the website as well as any news that is arts related and relevent to the magazine. There is the ability to search through all the archives so students can always look back on and share their published work.

advertising Directory Mag aims to transmit a fresh and modern design led aesthetic so any advertising would have to fit in with this notion There is large scope for advertising on the online website, for any enquiries please contact the marketing and PR team for a quote. With regards to advertising in the print magazine there is a lot more exclusivity offered as we aim to keep print adverts to a minimum, only including advertisements that are really relevant to the content. For more information please contact the marketing and PR team. As well as standard advertisements there will be opportunities for advertorials which again must relate in some way to the content. There is also scope for partnership campaigns which can be discussed by contacting the marketing and PR team.

competitors VNA (very nearly almost) “ UK-based independent magazine printed quarterly which features interviews with some of the world’s best urban artists, illustrators and photographers” Start (student arts magazine) “ Fundamentally a student art magazine; made by students, about students, for students. Our aim is to bring exposure to talented students nationally, helping them to establish a name for themselves whilst at the same time helping other students to see what’s going on around them.” Exit “ An exclusive and timeless portfolio of the world’s most talented photographers and artists.” Aesthetica “ Aesthetica combines dynamic content with compelling critical debate, exploring the best in contemporary art and culture.”

Most of the competitors listed here are international publications, obviously as UK based and focussed publication we do not aim to rival these companies as of yet. The reason they are listed is because of the lack of UK based publications that are similar in either content, structure or style to Directory Mag. There are many student art magazines ran by universities that showcase just the work of students from that particular university, acting as a showcase of students work. However, these are free publications which sometimes do not even go out to print. We feel Directory Mag has pulled together all these elements to create not an all-in-one, one-stopshop, but a more well rounded view on UK arts. A perfect balance between showcasing, informing and enteraining.
