James Maxwell Cardiff School of Art & Design Howard Gardens Campus Cardiff CF24 0SP Heatherwick Studio 356/364 Gray’s Inn Road London WC1X 8BH To Thomas Heatherwick and the Design Team at Heatherwick Studio, My name is James Maxwell, and I am currently studying on my third year of my Interior Architecture University degree at Cardiff School of Art & Design. Throughout both my personal and professional practice throughout the years, I have been a great admirer of your work and have watched new projects and designs evolve with great fascination and delight, amazed at the studio’s wonderfully varied, yet consistently strong body of work that is so frequently produced. With the addition of designing the Olympic Torches for this year’s 2012 London Olympic Games, I am sure that your studio has had even more attention from both the industry and public that ever before, and, personally, has lead on to inspire my design practice and to look outside of the boundaries of Interior Architecture to product and furniture design, something which I hope to explore and expand upon throughout my portfolio in the future months and years to come. I am writing to you today with the request of potentially coming down to meet you at your studio in Kings Cross to potentially discuss my existing design portfolio and to receive feedback from members of your team in regards to my current experience, and ways in which I could improve upon my work with the view of employment upon graduating from the degree programme this summer. Of course, I understand the constraints in regards to time of any design studio, particularly one of such acclaim and prestige, and I would be honoured if you were able to offer me the opportunity to come to meet you to gain some profound and vital industry experience. Along with this letter, I have sent a copy of my current design portfolio, which showcases a range of projects which I have been working upon this year, with the particular influence of Utopian design, a subject matter and theme of which I have also gone on to study and evaluate for my degree dissertation with great passion and interest. Again, I thank you for your time, and anticipate hearing from you in the near future.

Yours Sincerely,

James Maxwell
