Design Research REFLECTIVE EPILOGUE
The research undertaken looks at the possibilities of architecture as a form of resistance and transformation through the practice of ‘vandalising’ buildings inspired by Dutch artists Asger Jorn’s vandalised kitsch paintings, however this practice of radical negative action in the urban space is only proposed as a instrument to construct a critique of certain contemporary architectural trends and aims to increase the consciousness of the individual within the urban environment. The proposed practice of intervening with the spectacle of the urban is that will provide for the initial stages of the design to follow. The reactionary milieu generated by a radicalized urban détournement will provide for a narrative which will lay the foundations for the design project. Narrative is an important design process, recognized by the institution or architecture, however, producing a narrative out of chaos and observation will hopefully encourage an honest design proposal for the benefit of the public and this process will hopefully liberate designers from the tick-box methods currently used in the urban landscape.

It will be important to record these constructed instances that challenge the illusion of the city in order to aid an accurate design brief and therefore the intention is to collect information using trans disciplinary methods which can also help to create new and inspirational perspectives. Film will be a primary technique of exploring the city environment and the behaviour of it’s users and the tool allows for the opportunity to develop new ideas as the process of re-evaluating collected footage can initiate discoveries through a sequence of recorded experience. The design itself will aim to challenge the very idea of ‘public’. The type of environment envisaged by the design program will, no doubt, be a unique environment which allows the opportunity for the general public to move beyond their current spectator position and in fact have a direct influence on their environment, and thus allowing the public to contrast this proposed environment with the contemporary image of coordinated urban life. The project will aim to inject desire and creativity into the banal city which in itself is a form of resistance to controlling systems, and of course, the space aims to be flexible and low maintenance so that there is no need for an organized system of authority to penetrate the area.

It is encouraging to imagine the possibility of positive action and benefit developing from the negative intervention of dÊtournement and that part of Asger Jorn’s practice can be introduced into the architectural process to re-evaluate and redirect space design philosophy.
