My source of inspiration for my research originally began by observing engines in different types of transport. I looked at the form and structure of a variety of engines as well as the different textures they displayed. By looking at the diverse range of engines I started to take ideas from the different types of shapes and textures by developing them into fashion concepts. I considered the variation of fabrics and manipulation techniques that could be used to replicate engines. I mostly took inspiration from aircraft engines, looking at the propellers and transforming them into print and textile ideas.
While being inspired by engines and aircraft, I broadening my research by exploring aircraft garments such as; aviator jackets, flyboy jackets, the sidcot flight suit, C1 survival vests and B-15 flight jackets. I was particularly influenced by Amelia Earheart’s style in the late 1930’s and early 40’s. I wanted to create a street style look that resembled the vintage garments.
