SOPHIE McGARRY FASHION COMMUNICATOR
NORTHERN POWERHOUSE Working in collaboration with Andrew Bannister’s label Studio 805, this module pushed us to be inspired by the concept of The Northern Powerhouse. The brief was to produce a commercially viable t-shirt incorporating our own prints, which I created with inspiration from Peter Saville’s graphic work for Factory Records. Here is a collection of my inspiration, final design line up and photographs containing my two finished t-shirts.

G O L D E N R E PA I R As the future drivers for change in the fashion industry, our class was asked to work in small groups with The Bone Cancer Research Trust to create both a film and a garment for our ‘muse’, Elesha Turner, a survivor of bone cancer. Elesha served both as an inspiration and featured in our short film, focusing on the concept of ‘Golden Repair’. The film is loosely based on the ancient form of kinsugi – the method of fixing broken pottery with gold lacquer in order to create something more beautiful than it was before. “The wound is the place where the light enters you.”
SHARPEYE Barrie Sharpe, one of the founders of Duffer St. George, founded Sharpeye with a focus on creating the type of clothes that he liked to wear. We were tasked with rebranding Sharpeye’s image, which led me to create a new, simpler logo, along with packaging and promotional work linking back to his work with the homeless. I also created a new online presence for both Sharpe and Sharpeye to expand his customer base.

66 Labour MPs voted for air strikes on Syria: recent history has shown that the main victims that are blown to pieces, maimed, crippled or blinded, are innocent woman and children. Many labour constituents voiced against war, however these MPs thought it in their own best interest to discredit Jeremy Corbyn, in this life/world changing vote, than to appease the wishes of their supporters J A N 0 1, 2 0 1 6
THE VIEW FROM THE AFTERNOON During a recent trip to Paris with my course, I felt inspired not only by the city as a whole, but by the beauty within the details – the geometric pattern on the Louvre building rather than the artwork inside, the shade of blue beads found at MarchÊ Aux Puces and a variety of artwork on display at the Palais de Tokyo.
T H R O WAWAY C U LT U R E Inspired by my essay exploring the ways in which marriage can affect and alter a woman’s identity, I created a bridal veil made from woven bin liners and tulle. My materials were chosen to represent how marriage isn’t always thought to be as important as it once was, and that all too often can break down and end in divorce. I also composed and shot a series of photographs that use body language to portray a different range of feelings that a woman may have towards her impending marriage and the effect that it could have on her identity.
CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT One of the first year modules required us to create a line up of six design elements in the style of an existing brand, along with a communication package to match. I chose the French brand CÊline because of its recognisable silhouettes and prestige status. My final designs were created with luxury materials in mind and then packaged in simple in fitting with the brand’s ethos.
