thirty years seven continents with abercrombie & kent

I’ve always been an exploring soul enjoying the discovery of new places, people, and cultures, but I didn’t set out to achieve this particular milestone. I did plan to visit all seven continents, but to do so over the past 30 years with one travel partner happened rather organically after my first experience traveling to Asia. Now that I’ve recently completed my seventh continent with them, I hope you enjoy reading about my experiences over a lifetime of trusting them with some of my very big travel “firsts” on both land and sea.

1997

asia My love of travel A&K style all began in 1997 when I announced to my husband that for our 20th wedding anniversary I wanted to go to Hong Kong before the hand over from British Rule to China’s control of that iconic city. That three week adventure took us to Singapore, then Bangkok on to Myanmar, along the coast of South East Asia to the famous beaches of Phuket,

Penang and Kuala Lumpur with a final stop in the city that was the inspiration for the entire trip, Hong Kong. A&K’s white glove service started when they met us plane-side and escorted us through customs to our airconditioned Mercedes with endless bottles of ice cold water and cool towels! Our lovely English-speaking guide made us feel at home immediately even though this was a culture with which we were completely unfamiliar. time in Africa was life-changing and we felt a connection to our world that is impossible to describe. That first dinner under the stars near a big bonfire listening to the sounds of the normal residents of that land made us again realize we were indeed in a very As a lifelong traveler, I had been to all unique and special place. 50 states, Canada, and Mexico on this continent, but again through the watchful care of A&K it is always interesting to 2001 see how they make something special out of something that may otherwise seem ordinary. In the winter of 1998 we enjoyed snow skiing and snowmobiling in the Canadian Rockies while staying at the While I have traveled many times to beautiful Chateau Lake Louise and England (90 as of December) and various Springs hotels. countries in Western Europe, by 2001 I had not experienced Europe with A&K. Then a group of friends and I chartered a lovely barge for an idyllic week sailing 2000 slowly down the rivers from Paris through Burgundy. This trip ended on September 11, 2001. When I went to the airport and saw what was happening in our country Our next big adventure in 2000 was our back home, it was a sharp contrast to the first trip to Africa. East Africa exceeded all previous relaxing week with not a worry or of our romantic notions of what an African care in the world. We spent the next week in Safari experience would be. It has been Paris waiting for the airports in the USA to said that there is simply nothing like the re-open and were well taken care of before first time in Africa and now having been we were finally able to come home. As several times, I can attest to that. Our first Americans, we are very blessed that most

of the world welcomes us with open arms, especially in times of trouble. Our world will always have conflict, but traveling with trusted partners like A&K and having a travel advisor as your advocate through any changes you may need during your travel are priceless.

2007

south america Our first experience in South America was in 2007 and included a fascinating adventure to Lima. Our small group of eight was treated to an after-hours dinner and cultural show in a small private museum not usually open to the public, as an exclusive A&K experience. From there we ventured to Cusco and on to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Machu Picchu followed by a week in Ecuador and the untouched Galapagos Islands. To stand on the deck of a ship sailing the ocean 600 miles from land and see the stars of both the northern and southern hemisphere is a

sight to describe in part because we do not see this anywhere but at the equator, and also because there were absolutely no other lights to detract from the brilliance of the stars.

in New Zealand, our visit in Melbourne, and finally for several days in Sydney at the end of the cruise. In each case we were treated to amazing, highly personalized experiences such as a sea plane to a remote spot for a quiet romantic lunch and retrieved three hours later as if the pilot knew exactly when we would complete the last bite of our dessert. The flight back with a dip over the harbor bridge and the opera house were but a few of the visions of this gorgeous city that will forever remain in our memory. The private “behind the scenes” tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sydney Opera House, with a passionate young guide provided unique and unexpected insights of this unbelievable structure we would never have fully grasped on our own. Experiencing an exhilarating opera performance naturally followed this experience.

2017

antarctica It seemed only fitting that for our seventh continent we would consider no other option for our arrangements than A&K. To say this was the trip of a lifetime is an understatement. The 25-year veteran expedition team gave us the most exciting time on the coldest, driest, highest and windiest continent. Our ship, Le Lyrial was beautiful, the terrific, the food

excellent, and the education amazing. We had clear sunny weather and smooth sailing for the entire journey. Hauntingly beautiful, Antarctica’s emptiness and purity with teeming wildlife is only a part of what makes the Great White Continent the place of the moment. Antarctica is larger than the United States and twice the size of Australia. Most of it is covered with a sheet of ice averaging about a mile thick, which contains about 70 percent of the world’s fresh water. It is said that a visit to Antarctica is unscripted and for that reason it holds the same fascination for me as a trip to Africa. It became quite clear that we were NOT in charge and the day unfolded based on the weather, the wind, the ice, the sea and the wildlife. It was an adventure like no other and made me so aware of how blessed I have been to see the world with Abercrombie & Kent.

Abercrombie & Kent’s feet-on-the-ground approach is unique in the industry. A handpicked in 52 around the world backs every A&K departure. Their fulltime members are on call every day (and night) to ensure that each stop on your journey meets A&K’s highest standard of quality. My team and I would be honored to help you experience your own unforgettable travel “firsts” and plan every detail to suit the personal needs of you and your loved ones. Contact me today and we’ll custom craft your dream vacations into reality with our three to five year vacation planning program.

I didn’t have enough space in this article to share all of my experiences, so if you would love to read more detail and In early 2012, we took a lovely cruise see more photos, please visit our from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, online blog at: Linda Raymer Australia. The hillside view of the Washington School House hotel

OLD-SCHOOL COOL Historical charm and high alpine design converge in the heart of Park City at a 200-year-old schoolhouse turned polished boutique hotel. By Elise Hofer Shaw / Washington School House photography Michael Spengler Park City, Utah, is in the middle of a whiteout, being born again beneath a blanket of 12 inches of fluffy, fresh powder. It’s been a record-breaking season for snow, one that has already seen more than 365 inches accumulate by the end of February. But this morning clouds are scarce, the sun is out, and it’s a comfortable 30 degrees for spring skiing—and the natives are restless, eager to hit the mountain and make the first tracks in the snow. Our basecamp is the Washington School House, Park City’s only mountainside luxury hotel adjacent to the largest single ski and snowboard playground in the United States: Park City Mountain Resort. Offering more than 7,300 acres of skiable terrain, the mountain is truly epic—and mere steps from the

hotel’s back door. Proximity is definitely a perk, but that’s not why guests of the Washington School House return season after season. They come for the understated charm and designer details. They come for the quaint confines that only a 12-suite property can offer. They come for first-rate services like fireside gear fittings and private chef-prepared dinners that have earned the hotel spots on Travel + Leisure’s “It List” and Forbes’ “Top 10 Luxury Hotels.” And, yes, the fact that the Washington School House also happens to be the boutique hotel that Netflix buys out annually for the Sundance Film Festival, not to mention a respite of choice for snow-loving celebs like Robert Redford, Elijah Wood and Chelsea Handler, admittedly adds to its cachet, too.

The heated Orange Bubble lift at Park City Mountain Resort

But above all, guests of the Washington School House come to be a part of history. Built in 1889, the property was a schoolhouse for miners’ children until 1931, when it shuttered after the Great Depression laid waste to Summit County’s labor jobs prospecting silver and lead ore. After a stint as a VFW hall, followed by decades of abandonment, the building was turned into a bed and breakfast during the late 1980s that served its patrons well for 26 years (wood panelling, floral drapes et al). But the Washington School House’s most stylish incarnation was completed in 2011 by its current owners who enlisted Paul Allen Design for the four-story overhaul. The schoolhouse’s solid bones were left intact, including its limestone facade and original bell tower, but the rest was a total gut job to make way for 16-foot-high ceilings, reclaimed barnwood floors, Carrara marble-topped built-ins, a subterranean ski lounge, a heated pool, and rooms and suites that boast a balanced mix of Gustavian antiques, fine art and modern alpine touches like antler chandeliers dipped in glossy white lacquer. For the San Diego-based design firm’s first foray into hotel design, they knocked it out of the park (pun intended), partly because they approached it like a residential project. The result? A cool and clean redesign that respects the building’s historical integrity, garnering the hotel nods from Architectural Digest and Elle Decor. My king room faces west overlooking the 20-foot plunge pool that’s terraced into the hillside, dappled with blue spruce and aspen trees and bearing as its crown jewel a torch from the 2002 Winter Olympics that has been fashioned into a fire pit. The window well, where I choose to enjoy my morning French press 34 slmag.net

coffee (brought in from beloved local beanery Pink Elephant), is appointed with two Victorian-style armchairs and farmhouse sconces. The stately wrought iron bed’s mattress boasts both a pillow top and a feather bed, all ensconced in Pratesi linens for maximum comfort. As for the en suite bath, it’s a study in white porcelain and marble, the only pop of color being a mix of Molton Brown bath goods that fill the air with bergamot and orange while I wrestle into my ski gear. True, it’s about a three-minute downhill walk to the Town Lift that whisks skiers and snowboarders to the base of Park City Mountain. But chauffeur privileges are part of the package at the Washington School House, an extension of the hotel’s Ski Valet services. You can literally pick your starting point from two base villages and they’ll shuttle you there in moments in a white SUV with lift ticket in tow so you can skip the lines, click in and go. Since Vail Resorts bought and combined Park City Mountain and Canyons Resort into a mega-resort in 2015, the mountain has been running like a well-oiled machine courtesy of a $50 million renovation and operating budget that has been put toward the addition of the Quicksilver Gondola (linking Park City Mountain to Canyons), the widening of multiple trails, the revamping of Miners Camp (a massive new mid-mountain bar and restaurant for brews and bites between runs) and more. Talk to anyone who skis Park City regularly and they’ll tell you that the flow and connectivity from ridge to ridge has been significantly improved. After an afternoon of off-trail powder skiing spanning 5,000-plus acres, I can vouch that the diversity of terrain is divine.

REDUCE, REUSE, UPCYCLE While at Old Town Cellars in Old Town Park City, we stumbled upon a Cotopaxi pop-up shop. The outdoor brand’s mantra, “Gear for Good,” isn’t just lip service: two percent of all of Cotopaxi’s revenue provides grants to nonprofits that have demonstrated outstanding impact, agility and persistence toward alleviating poverty around the world. Our current covetable carryall is the Uyuni 46L Duffel ($80), a colorful, go-anywhere cross-body made from material scraps from bigname outfitters like Patagonia and The North Face. A good cause and great mountain style? Done and done. cotopaxi.com 36 slmag.net

The Old Town Cellars philosophy merges the art and culture of professional wine making with the mountain town lifestyle of Park City.

Après-ski is a communal part of the Park City lifestyle, and options abound along Main Street. But for savory spreads culled from Utahan charcuteries and cheesemongers, house-made sweets and wines that have been blended and bottled in town, a cozy corner by the fire in the grand living room back at the Washington School House can’t be beat. You see, another ace the hotel has up its sleeve is the culinary trifecta of chefs Ernesto Rocha (executive breakfast chef ), Callie Varner (pastry chef and après-ski fare artist) and Kyle Hirsch (on-call private dinner chef ). Rocha’s hearty mountain breakfast menu is served each morning, with Varner’s daily après-ski eats set out every afternoon starting at 4PM. And with 24 hours notice, Hirsch can curate a private dinner for groups large or small that’ll knock your ski socks off. Ours boasted a bellywarming carrot ginger bisque made with coconut milk and cilantro, a baby arugula salad with cucumber ribbon, candied walnuts, sweet pickled parsnip, Gold Creek feta and a honey pear vinaigrette, and a perfectly seared bone-in filet mignon with a mustard bourbon demi-glace served with Yukon potato au gratin and heirloom carrots. (Hirsch’s menus change frequently depending on what’s in season and can be customized around any dietary restrictions.) Exploring Park City’s growing culinary scene is part of the fun, and the 24-hour concierge at Washington School House is happy to dole out dining recommendations. For lunch on the mountain, we liked The Farm, a slope-side restaurant at Canyons Village where one can fuel up on bison chili and organic winter lettuces and herbs in a heated yurt overlooking the Red Pine Gondola. If snowshoeing Wasatch Mountain State Park followed by an afternoon of shopping Main Street is more your speed, break up the day by

popping into Riverhorse Provisions’ noshery for a bowl of healthy grains and kale or house-made soups. Park City’s restaurant with the biggest buzz right now is Handle, helmed by award-winning chef Briar Handley. Its menu of creative yet comforting American cuisine (think buttermilk fried chicken and roasted sunchoke risotto) and shareable small plates (try the smoked Idaho trout and buffalo cauliflower) is driven by the seasons, and Handley prides himself on sourcing local and regional ingredients at the height of freshness. The bar’s rustic-chic vibe and ruggedly inventive cocktails like the Rattlesnake—a stiff pour of High West double rye with absinthe and egg-white foam that’s branded with an “H” drawn in Angostura bitters—are added incentives for a visit. Speaking of libations, Park City’s cocktail culture has significantly matured over the last few years. New on the scene is Old Town Cellars, a private label winery that sources fine wines from top wine growing regions around the world and then blends and bottles on site. (Washington School House is a fan and always has its seasonal varietals in rotation at the hotel.) And High West Saloon, located next to the Town Lift base—the only ski-in gastro-distillery in the world—is a local gem just a stone’s throw from the hotel. Doctor’s orders: Request one (or two) of the house’s signature Dead Man’s Boots cocktail—Rendezvous rye, reposado tequila, fresh-squeezed lime juice, simple syrup and Fever Tree ginger beer over chipped ice—and you’ll forget about the residual pain in your shins from hours of powering through fresh powder. Sleep, ski and repeat. sl Washington School House Hotel, 543 Park Ave., Park City, Utah; 435.649.3800. washingtonschoolhouse.com. For mountain information, visit parkcitymountain.com.

Wine Worth the Wait

Instantly smitten with a picturesque Napa Valley property she spied in 1900, Fernande de Latour convinced her husband Georges to purchase a four-acre ranch she’d dubbed “beau lieu”, or “beautiful place.” In short order, Georges sold his successful cream of tartar business, acquired the land, and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the intent of making fine wines to rival those of his native France. Today, the property encompasses more than 1,100 acres of estate vineyards. To realize his goal, Georges started out by importing phylloxera-resistant rootstock from Europe to revive a fledging California wine industry that had been ravaged by the disease. During prohibition, when many wineries were shuttered, Beaulieu actually increased its business fourfold by selling sacramental wine to the Catholic Church. After the repeal, Georges refocused his efforts on crafting world-class wines, traveling to France in 1938 to meet and subsequently hire the famed Russian-born viticulturist and enologist André Tchelistcheff, who instituted a culture of continuous innovation that continues today. A memorable growing season in 1936 produced the inaugural vintage of the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, which was released in 1940 and went on to become Napa Valley’s first “cult” Cabernet. In 1989, current winemaker Jeffrey Stambor was hired to succeed Tchelistcheff, who’d come to be known as “The

Maestro” in Napa during his forty-year career at Beaulieu. Legendary winemaker Michel Rolland joined Beaulieu as a blending consultant on their reserve wines in 2010. Beaulieu recently made waves in the wine world when it announced the release of Rarity 2013, the fifth-ever vintage bottling of its Rarities Collection. Produced only in remarkable vintage years, Rarity was first crafted by Tchelistcheff in 1968 to showcase the distinctive, opulent expression of an extraordinarily high-quality vintage; prior to 2013, the most recent vintage to produce a Rarity bottling was 1990. The decision to declare 2013 a vintage worthy of the Rarities Collection was made by Stambor, who selected the finest barrellots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot to lend Rarity 2013 a powerful, complex character. For the blend, Stambor selected grapes from some of Beaulieu’s oldest vineyards, sourcing from heritage sites on BV Ranches No. 1 and 2 as well as their Hewitt Estate Vineyard and a neighboring small vineyard at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. The vines, with the majority planted in the 1980s, were grafted to clones that yield small, intensely flavored grapes. All four vineyards are deeply rooted in welldraining, alluvial fan soils on the western bench-lands of Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA, often recognized as the most coveted California terroir.

“This limited release wine celebrates the rarity granted to us by Mother Nature,” noted Stambor. “2013 was a spectacular vintage, with the earliest onset to harvest that I recall in my 28 years of winemaking at Beaulieu, and gave us some truly special Cabernet Sauvignon. By bottling Rarity only in magnums, we better ensure that this magnificent wine can reach its full potential with bottle aging and can be enjoyed for decades to come.” While Napa Valley winemakers heralded the 2012 vintage as outstanding, the 2013 vintage was truly magnificent, with an unusually warm and dry winter promoting early budbreak, which gave the vines an early start to the 2013 growing season. Ideal conditions prevailed through flowering, fruit set and ripening, with low rainfall keeping the grapes desirably small. While harvest was early, the bloom-to-harvest span was not compressed; thus, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes benefited from adequate hang-time to develop exceptionally ripe, balanced flavors. The process of making Rarity 2013 began with handsorting the grape clusters and then the destemmed grapes to retain only the highest quality fruit. For early integration of oak character and to enhance the supple mouthfeel, over half of the Rarity components were barrel-fermented, with the balance in stainless steel and wood tanks. During fermentation in barrel, Beaulieu Vineyard’s cellar team rotated the barrels

four times daily to fully extract phenolic concentration and build complexity. After a month of maceration followed by gentle pressing, the wine was returned to barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. To balance the tremendous intensity of dark fruit character, Stambor chose to age this wine in 100% new French and Russian oak barrels. To add even more structure and layers of flavor complexity to the Cabernet Sauvignon, the blend was complemented with 10% Petit Verdot from BV Ranch No.1. Rated at 99 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate, 2013 Rarity delivers massive power and weight, yet with uncommon elegance and suppleness. The wine’s profuse aromas of blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate and violet are mirrored in the opulent flavors that explode on the palate. Seamlessly integrated vanilla and oak spice nuances, from barrel fermentation and aging in entirely new barrels, add even more complexity. “Rutherford Dust” tannins contribute texture, while bright acidity keeps its fresh, purity of focus. This is a wine that will age for decades. Only 1,500 bottles of Rarity 2013 have been produced. The limited-edition magnum bottles, each numbered and presented in a commemorative box, are available for $1,000 at select fine wine purveyors and by personal inquiry through the winery at rarity@bvwines.com. sl

A THREE-PEAT AT THE THREE-DAY EVENT Written by Bridget Williams / Photos by Tony Bailey

Michael Jung, 34, made history in late April when he became the first rider in the 39-year history of the Kentucky ThreeDay Event, presented by Land Rover, to win three years in a row. The ultimate test of horse and rider, the Three-Day event is comprised of dressage, cross-country and jumping tests. Aboard FischerRocana FST for a third year, the German duo lowered one rail in show jumping to finish on 42.7 penalties, just ahead of France’s Maxime Livio and Qalao Des Mers in second (44.6) and England’s Zara Tindall and High Kingdom in third (46.6). “Without the horse, you are just walking people, I’m not sure how you say that in English,” said Jung with a laugh following the win. “This is a very wonderful horse, she is absolutely a top horse, 50 slmag.net

and she is always fighting for me. We have a partnership, I know everything that she needs for me to motivate her. But she was perfect. I am so thankful for my whole team and my horse.” Livio is the only competitor in recent memory to have bested Jung, and the 29-year-old Frenchman's powerful doubleclean round put the pressure on the eventual champion as he cantered out of the ring in front of 24,159 fans in Rolex Stadium on the final day of competition. “There is always a little pressure in the ring, especially at a four-star with all the top riders,” Livio said. “With my horse, I just have to stick to him and stick to my ride, and if I do that the pressure goes down. I know if I’m very focused on my riding, the horse will do his

best. But, of course there is pressure because I want to be good enough for my horse, and after that it’s good for me to start to put pressure on (Jung). I think to try to beat such a rider you have to be 100 percent all the time. All this week my horse was 100 percent, but I was maybe only 90 percent in dressage. But after that I have no regrets.” Third-place finisher Tindall, 35, of Gloucestershire, England, came into the 2017 event with expectations in check following a trying trip two years ago when an injury in the stable prevented her from even starting the competition. “I’m obviously very lucky to come back and very thankful to my owner and to Land Rover and Rolex to be able to come back,” she said. “It’s great to be

sitting up here with these guys. My horse was fantastic all the way through the competition –he jumped great today. The Kentucky Three-Day Event is the nation’s premier Three-Day Event and one of the most prestigious equestrian competitions in the world. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the world’s governing body of equestrian sports, has designated the Kentucky Three-Day Event as a ‘Four Star’ eventing competition, the highest designation, which is given only to the Olympic Games, World Championships, and six annual events around the world. “Rolex Kentucky” is the only Four-Star event in the Western Hemisphere and is part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing. sl slmag.net

Smarts and style define the Mercedes-Benz 2018 S-Class Sedan model range Written by Andre James

Most notable among the innovations found in the mid-cycle update throughout the Mercedes-Benz S-Class range, which made its world premiere at the Shangai Auto Show this past April, is the extended suite of Intelligent Drive features that continue forward momentum on the march towards autonomous driving. Tweaks to the front fascia, rear bumper exhaust pipes and wheel designs, as well as an LED Intelligent Light System are a few of the segment-wide upgrades common among each rendition of the Mercedes-Benz flagship model, which was the top-selling luxury sedan in the world in 2016. New badges serve to indicate changes that have taken place under the hood. The S550 has been replaced by the S560, and is powered by a twinturbocharged 4.0-liter V8 producing 463 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The base model S-Class comes equipped with a 3.0-liter V-6 engine. At the top of the range, the Maybach retains its V12, while the Mercedes-AMG S63 has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with an output of 603 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The sprint from zero to 60 mph takes just 3.4 seconds, faster than any other performance luxury sedan, and the electronically-limited top speed is 186 mph. The 4Matic all-wheel-drive variant of the S63 AMG is paired with a new ninespeed automatic transmission for the first time, while the top-of-the-range rear-wheel drive S65 retains its proven twin-turbocharged V12 with 7G-Tronic transmission boasting 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Four AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes¬–Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual– allow the driver to influence the characteristics of the AMG S63 and AMG S65 Sedans. Each driving mode modifies key parameters such as engine response, transmission, suspension, steering, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and all-wheel drive (in the AMG S63). The driver has the option of pressing the "M" button to switch directly to manual mode, in which gearshifts are executed exclusively using the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. If required, the suspension settings can be specially selected as well. The 3-stage ESP and exhaust flap can also be operated with a special button. The AMG S65 features a CURVE function, which allows the body of the car to tilt to the inside of a turn by up to 2.65-degrees (similar to a motorcycle rider), thereby reducing centrifugal forces perceived by passengers and virtually eliminating body roll.

Inside the cabin, the new S-Class is characterized by two new highresolution displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. The pair is housed under a single pane of glass, which lends the impression of a widescreen cockpit and emphasizes the horizontal orientation of the interior design. Virtual instruments are displayed in the direct field of vision of the driver as well as a central display above the center console. With the fully digital cockpit, the driver can choose from three different display styles (Classic, Sport and Progressive) and configure the information and views relevant to them. Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone and enable the driver to control the entire multimedia system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. The multimedia system can also be operated via touchpad with controller in the center console and by Voice Control. The operation of Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC or standard cruise control is managed via steering wheel-mounted controls. Enhanced Level 2 autonomous driving functions, including Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist, provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and stay in their lane. Speed is adjusted automatically ahead of curves or intersections, which is complemented by a considerably improved Active Lane Change Assist and additional functions of Active Emergency Stop Assist. For the first time, map and navigation data are used to calculate driving behavior. At one glance, an "Assistance Graphics" menu on the instrument panel shows the driver which assistance functions are selected and to what situations the systems are currently responding to. The optional ENERGIZING Comfort system is a world-first entering series production. This feature links various comfort systems in the vehicle together, such as climate control, ambient lighting and massage functions, into a ten-minute “wellness” setup. Owners can choose from Freshness, Warmth, Vitality, Joy, and Comfort programs to configure a specific wellness program to suit their current mood. A pair of new natural grain ash wood trims are available for 2018, as well as revised cabin materials and colorways, including Silk Beige/Deep Sea Blue, Magma Gray/Espresso Brown, and Mahogany/Silk Beige. Among the available AMG options are a choice of forged 20-inch wheels, AMG Performance Studio options, and an AMG Ceramic Composite Braking system. "The development of the new S-Class was extremely extensive. With a whole series of new features and functions, the S-Class remains a technological pioneer," says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. Pricing for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be announced closer to its on-sale at US dealers in late 2017. sl

The view across the rooftops of the 7th arrondissement to the Eiffel Tower from the three-bedroom 'Margaux' apartment

PARIS IN ERNEST Tracing the footsteps of a literary giant Written by Bridget Williams I arrived in Paris 96 years and 29 days after Ernest Hemingway and his new bride Hadley, who were somewhat unprepared for the dreariness of winter in the city. During those first few months, Hemingway wrote to his colleague, American novelist Sherwood Anderson, remarking about the cold and his low spirits saying, “I do not know what I thought Paris would be like but it was not that way.” Indeed, it is easy to love Paris in the springtime, but I find it even more beguiling in the winter, when its soul is laid as bare as the leafless trees that line the banks of the Seine. Admiring the architecture of naked branches reaching out in all directions, I am reminded of the decorative iron railings that adorn the famous façades of Baron Haussmann buildings lining the boulevards. With no indoor plumbing, the Hemingway’s first apartment at 74 rue Cardinal Lemoine in the 5th arrondissement was less-than-ideal. In spite of the primitive conditions, the couple embraced their bohemian lifestyle, buoyed by a strong US dollar and an influx of stellar literary and artistic luminaries that made the 1920s a great time to be a writer in Paris. Capitalizing on 58 slmag.net

convivial connections and the pervading creative atmosphere, Hemingway was soon on a path to infamy. I know I’m not alone in my romanticized and heavily rose-colored view of the people and places of this era (perpetuated even further by the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris), so for my most recent trip to the City of Lights, we made it our mission to tread the timeworn footsteps of literary legends. Eschewing the traditional hotel route, we opted instead for a more “authentic” Parisian experience by renting an apartment through Paris Perfect (parisperfect.com), a company founded more than 20 years ago by a former French cardiac surgeon and his American investment banker wife. Working with the Paris Perfect team to whittle down the available properties–ranging in size from a studio unit to a sprawling five-bedroom villa, based on our likes, dislikes and intended activities–we were able to find an ideal match. And ideal it was, as our “Champagne” apartment, located on the Left Bank in the heart or the 7th arrondissement (from $435/night), was a far cry from the squalor of Hemingway’s first abode.

Although we were aware of the apartment’s straight-on, postcard-perfect view of the Eiffel Tower from its wraparound balcony, as well as the living and dining rooms and the kitchen, it was truly something else to behold in person. The experience of starting and ending the day in the midst of such a global icon was simply magical. Our one-bedroom, 590 square-foot apartment was fully equipped for a comfortable home-away-from-home stay, including a modern kitchen with granite countertops, a petite dining area perfect for candlelight dinners, and a spacious living area outfitted in classic Parisian style. Outside of the mesmerizing view, what I loved most about renting through Paris Perfect was the comprehensive neighborhood and visitor guide (more than 40 pages in total) that was provided to us digitally prior to arrival and in hard copy form in the apartment. Chock-full of insider information that would take the occasional Paris tourist years to acquire, it allowed us to easily plot out where to dine and what to see, and even more helpful, what places to avoid based on client and staff feedback. The neighborhood surrounding our chosen apartment is wellknown for its street markets (including the Rue Cler food market and Ront de l’Alma open market), and we had grand plans to visit the butcher, baker, and macaroon maker in order to create a locally60 slmag.net

sourced feast, but with a vast array of enticing dining options ranging from charming family-owned bistros to extravagant Michelin-star dining within walking distance, we opted to leave the cooking to the experts. Paris Perfect offers scores of walking tours and itinerary planning services tailored to an array of interests, from art to wine and everything in between. As this was only our second time in Paris and our time was limited, we opted to book a private, customized tour with Michael Osman, an American who has called the city home for the past 15 years. Affable and energetic, with a background in fine art and a deep love of his adopted city, he seized on our ambitious itinerary with aplomb. We managed to ogle the greatest hits at the Louvre, treasure hunt at the Les Puces flea market and visit several of his key “must see” stops, all before dinner. Though we regrettably had Michael to guide the way only for a single day, he did provide us with a wealth of information to craft a self-guided literary tour, focused on the cafés and watering holes frequented by Hemingway and his contemporaries. Hemingway was known to be a keen people watcher, and then, as now, one of the best places to take in the ebb and flow of street life in Paris is at a sidewalk café. At Brasserie Lipp (151 Boulevard Saint-Germain; brasserie-lipp.com), you can still partake of

an Alsatian meal a la Hemingway–beer, pommes à l’huile and sausage–albeit at a far higher fare than Hem paid in his day. Hemingway often drank with fellow writer F. Scott Fitzgerald at the Hôtel Ritz Paris (15 Place Vendôme; ritzparis. com). In 1944, Hemingway “liberated” the bar from the Nazis in cahoots with a group of displaced soldiers, ordering a round of champagne for every patron and thereby prompting the spot to henceforth be known as Bar Hemingway. Fresh off of a fouryear, $400 million property-wide renovation, the revamped bar is helmed by the charming duo of Colin Field and Roman Devaux. Popular among Americans, the atmosphere is courteous and lively, and ladies’ drinks are presented with a delicate white rose balanced on the rim of the glass. Opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1911, Harry’s New York bar claims to be the birthplace of the Bloody Mary in 1921. A popular hangout for “Lost Generation” writers of the 1920s, George Gershwin is purported to have composed An American In Paris there. The mahogany bar and wall paneling are original; the latter is now plastered with pennants hailing from American colleges and universities. Given my affinity for Midnight in Paris, we included a dinner at Maxim’s on our itinerary even though it isn’t known as a

Hemingway haunt. Although the food didn’t knock our socks off, the service was outstanding and the ambiance in the Art Nouveau institution, founded as a bistro in 1893 by Maxime Gaillard, and since frequented by countless celebrities and royals, made it a worthwhile stop. Other stops of note for the literary-minded traveler include Café le Dome (108 Boulevard du Montparnasse); Closerie des Lilas (171 Boulevard du Montparnasse); Café de Flore (172 Boulevard Saint-Germain), one of the oldest coffeehouses in Paris; and Les Deux Magots (6 place Saint-Germain-des-Pres), which opened in 1875 and was a favorite of American artists for decades. One of the best places for people watching, the café’s terrace overlooks the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, founded in the 6th century. After spending a few short days and nights eating and drinking our way around the City of Lights, it became that much easier to understand the affectionate nostalgia pervading Hemingway’s posthumously published memoir about being a struggling young expatriate journalist and writer in Paris. ”If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” sl

WHERE THE REBEL MEETS THE ROAD Written by Andre James

62 slmag.net

Pagani’s Huayra Coupe ushered in a new era of hypercars when it was unveiled to the public at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. An alluring combination of speed and spellbinding aesthetics, the Huayra Coupe, named after Huayra-tata, the “Father of Wind” in Incan culture, raised the bar for a performance-based technology mated with a lightweight build, resulting in the highest lateral acceleration ever seen on a car with road tires. The company launched a Huayra Roadster project in 2010 with the simple intent of creating a Huayra Coupe with a removable roof and conventional doors, as they did for their Zonda Roadster in 2003. Three years into the project, the design was scrapped in favor of creating a car independent of its predecessor and a standout in its own right. “If we think of the Huayra Coupe as a personification of elegance and timeless lines, the Huayra Roadster was to be the rebellious sister, shapely and beautiful, but with a sharp edge for

those who are careless,” said Horacio Pagani, the Argentine-born founder of Pagani Automobili S.p.A., which is based in San Cesario sul Panaro, near Modena, Italy. Formally unveiled this past February at the Geneva Motor Show, every detail of the Coupe has been developed from the ground up with its own unique design language and in direct symmetry with aerodynamic requirements to create a work of art on wheels. The cars skeletal composition, meaning that nearly every mechanical part is visible, sets it apart from most modern supercars, and ensures that even the smallest working component has been designed to be both beautiful and functional. Two options replace the fixed roof: one is crafted from carbon fiber with a central glass panel to mimic the look of a coupe with the freedom of a convertible, the other is a fabric soft top able to be stored inside the Roadster and installed in “just a few simple steps”.

slmag.net

63

Traditionally, convertible versions of sports cars are heavier and slightly slower, so creating a Roadster that was lighter than its corresponding Coupe was an ambitious goal for Pagani from the outset of the project. To achieve this, the Pagani engineering team refined the development of carbo-titanium and combined it with Carbo-Triax HP52, a new form of composite material developed specifically for the Huayra Roadster. The result is a 176-pound weight reduction over the Huayra Coupe, and an increase in the frame’s torsional rigidity, which is a significant factor in improving the handling necessary for precise operation of a hypercar such as this. “Engaging in such a challenge, to make just 100 cars, has meant an impressive effort for a company like ours, from a technical, human, and economic point of view,” Pagani stated. A 12-cylinder Mercedes-AMG M158 engine built specifically for Pagani delivers 754 horsepower at 5500 RPM. Although the company has yet to release an official 0-60mph time, it has been widely reported to be just under three seconds, with a top speed around 230mph, placing the Roadster squarely among the world’s fastest cars. Turbines have been developed to provide an immediate throttle response with no delay, providing the driver 64 slmag.net

with full control of the vehicle. Power and torque are regulated by a new seven-speed AMT gearbox that incorporates a hydraulic and electronic activation system combined with new carbon synchronizers to deliver seamless, precision shifting. The electronic differential facilitates adaption to all possible driving conditions. Since the release of Zonda F in 2006, Pagani cars, in partnership with Brembo, have attained some of the shortest recorded stopping distances for 100-0 and 200-0. For the Huayra Roadster, Brembo developed 380mm ventilated carbonceramic rotors that are gripped by six-piston calipers in front and four-pistons at the rear. To house the brakes, Pagani teamed up with another motoring industry titan–Pirelli–to design and sculpt a specific rubber for the Huayra Roadster tires. The new Pirelli PZero Corsa tires measure 21-inches at the rear and 20-inches up front, and are capable of (according to Pagani) enabling 1.80g of lateral grip. Developed along with Horacio Pagani, the tire displays an “HP” logo on its shoulder. It seems that even with a base price of approximately $2.5 million, getting your hands on a Huayra Roadster means acting as quick as the car is fast; as of press time all 100 cars scheduled to be built have been spoken for. sl

Striking the Perfect Tone in Music City Revitalizing the Old and Bringing In the New

Written by Carolyn Smith Bryant / Photographed by Michael Scott Evans It’s no secret that Nashville is one of America’s hottest cities. Not just high in humidity or our seemingly new warm weather patterns, but in popularity, influx of business, and the need for more housing. Part of what sells people on our city is the quaint look and feel of our neighborhoods and abundance of historic architecture. Yet, ironically our historic homes are constantly in jeopardy as we try to accommodate growth and shifts in style by knocking down the old and putting up new, bigger housing. That is why Alabama native, Palmer Finger stands out for selecting a solid and stately 1930’s Belmont Bungalow and choosing to renovate it in a way that honors its history yet facilitates his need for modernity. For help turning his well-built Grande Dame into the compound of his dreams, Palmer brought interior designer Landy Gardner on board. Landy is well known for not having 68 slmag.net

a signature style, but rather taking clients’ dreams, lifestyle, desires and turning each property into one-of-a-kind homes. For this project, Palmer’s directive was “rustic, with lots of textures and textured surfaces. Not rough but with a lot of character. Serene.” Beams hand-hewn in the 1800’s, sourced by Good Wood of Nashville, and originating from a barn in New Hampshire, set the “mood” from the moment one walks in the original front door. The beams on the ceiling were an “artistic choice” unlike those used vertically which were very much structural. They enabled the builder to “make one large front room out of two” and enabled the designer to create “two distinct conversation areas” assisted by tasteful pieces like the open-back sofa, an antique red-lacquered cocktail table from Thailand, and McGuire chairs.

Each vertical beam is uplit by a small halogen light embedded in the newly laid gray wooden Hitson & Co Handcrafted Wood Floors. It was Palmer’s idea to accentuate the importance of the beams with lighting as it also enhances the stunning herringbone pattern of the floors down the center of the front room. Landy said Palmer, the owner of PCM Capital, was a “dream client.” He had a clear-cut vision for certain aspects of the project and a decisive nature that often goes hand-in-hand with success in business. “We were able to expedite the process by taking a trip to the Chicago design center to select all the upholstered pieces.” After fabrics and furniture were selected, Landy presented fabulous rug choices, such as the Tufenkian. Each and every area rug and runner is perfection, many of them came from the Nashville Rug Gallery. Though virtually the whole house is executed in calming light gray and tan tones, it’s exciting to the senses! I couldn’t help but run my hands over the textures of

woven grass wallpaper in the library, the cement and metal coffee table, looped throw pillows, the rough-tumbled backsplash in the kitchen, vinylized cheesecloth on paper wall covering in the powder room, and so much more. Everything about the home invites exploration. I was obsessed with the lighting fixtures, some rustic, some modern. My favorite was a two-tiered circular iron, zinc, and quartz crystal chandelier called Prometheus. The open concept “heart of the house” is the eat-in kitchen, wine cellar, breakfast nook, and living room area and is made even more notable by two features. First, the kitchen island is an ingenious custom-made continuation of the front room hand-hewn beams with a rolled steel top and three riveted leather stools. Second, nearly the whole back wall of the first floor is a custom-made iron framed glass wall filling the space with soft natural light. It greatly enhances livable square footage by providing a view of and passage to the outdoor entertaining space. slmag.net

This ability to enjoy the outside while at home is important to him. Palmer, having been raised in Fairhope near the Gulf, is an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. Whether he parties with friends, entertains for business, or hosts his family, Palmer’s first house now has enviable outdoor space consisting of a porch, grilling area, manicured yard, lap pool with fountain, and fabulous pool cabana. Landscaping and pool design was provided by Gavin Duke of Page/Duke Landscape Architects. The pool and cabana were constructed by Nathan Skeba. What ties the whole indoor/outdoor concept together and Palmer’s need for “serenity” is a fabulous art collection that, for the most part, predates this project and was collected by Palmer and his mother from their beautiful art-colony Gulf Shores hometown. The collection includes abstract, still life, and scenes from nature such as salt marshes. Landy created the perfect palate against which to showcase artwork, family photos, and

framed menus from favorite world-renown restaurants, once again creating a very personal and interesting space. From its noteworthy art collection and classic decadence to its prominent location, Palmer’s new pad is just the right blend of modern and historic, work and play. He is only a glass of wine or bottle opener away from a great party at home or a short walk to 12 South. He lives five doors down from his brother, sister-in-law, and baby nephew. He is both close to his Nashville office and accommodated by a cozy and functional home office. One additional aspect that his beautiful bungalow accomplishes is stemming the tide of historic demolition in favor of brandspanking-new. Spotlighting the decision by a young, successful, stylish, entrepreneur to ensure that his notable house stands for another 75-100 years, I believe, will help his neighborhood maintain its vibe and place in history. sl slmag.net

Maw Maw’s Chicken Salad Britt Steele, Editor-in-Chief I’m not a pro, but in my mind, I know what works due to my intentional trail and unintentional error. I have over complicated so many meals and dinner parties, only to find myself going back to the basics like the recipe below. I feel very honored to share this recipe out of all of the ones in my arsenal, as there are many. The memories I have of sitting on my grandmother’s lap as she cuts the grapes or the vivid expressions on the faces of those enjoying it, makes not only this dish but this recipe a gift that will keep on giving as it has done for me. P.S. in my grandmother’s words “This recipe is not subject for interpretation! When I say Hellmann’s, I mean Hellmann’s...” Serves 8-10 people Ingredients • 5 large chicken breast-bone in with skin • 1 ¼ cup chopped celery • 2 ½ cups green sweet grapes- cut in halves • 1 ½ cups pecans- cut in small pieces • 1 ¼ cups drained crushed Dole pineapple in heavy syrup • 1 ½ cups Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise (you may need to add a little extra to make recipe extra moist) • ½ teaspoon salt Directions 1. Place chicken and salt in a large pot cover with water and boil until tender. Do not over cook as this will make tough chicken. 2. Pull chicken from bone, careful to separate fat and gristle of chicken. Use kitchen scissors to cut the perfect bite-size pieces; one inch recommended. 3. In a large bowl, add chicken and remaining ingredients. 4. Toss first with a large spoon and then with your hands. The hand toss ensure that all of the mayo and pineapple are blended well.

Pasta Alla Norma Fabrizio Venuta, Publisher I was raised in one of the most culturally rich and culinarily rewarding regions in Italy. Therefore, I wanted to share one of the most famous and indicative pasta dishes from my hometown, Catania. In fact, the name of the dish is Pasta Alla Norma, “La Norma” is one of the most sensational operas created by famed composer, Vincenzo Bellini. This delicious and classic dish is prepared using tomatoes, slices of fried eggplant and ricotta salata cheese. The pasta la norma is a perfect example of how so much can be made of so little…your senses will say “GRAZIE!” Ingredients • 11 oz Spaghetti (or rigatoni) • ½ cup grated ricotta salata pecorino romano • 3 or 4 eggplants (make sure to select the smaller eggplants as they are the ones with the least amount of seeds) • 2 cloves of garlic • Basil leaves • 1.5 oz course sea salt • 1 oz sugar • 30 oz peeled tomatoes • 1 oz extra virgin olive oil Oil To Fry • Sunflower Oil Directions • Wash and cut the eggplant into ¼ inch cubes • Fill a pan with sunflower oil and place each cube to fry. Remove cubes and place on a tray with parchment paper to absorb the excess oil. • Put the peeled tomatoes in a bowl and smash with a fork. • Satuee two garlic cloves in a pan with olive oil until golden brown, add the tomatoes and cook for about 15 minutes until tomatoes to create a thicker, yet moist consistancy. • Add salt and sugar. Combine eggplants with tomato sauce. Cook the spaghetti al dente (or pasta of your choice), drain and transfer directly into the pan of tomato sauce and eggplant. Mix. • Complete each dish by garnishing with basil leaves and the grated ricotta salata cheese. BUON APPETITO!

Smoked Turkey and Cucumber Sandwiches Alexandra Rhett, Managing Editor With the Nashville summer heat beating down with hardly any mercy, I take every chance I can get to indulge in something cool and fresh. While iced tea and A/C are a must, I have found that crisp cucumbers and fresh sliced turkey is an amazing, healthy way to feel refreshed and satisfied. With summer schedules slam-packed, it can be difficult to find a quick recipe that is not only delicious but relieves the heat, if only for a moment. This simple ‘summer sandwich’ has a nice crunch and is very low in carbs. It is sure to be enjoyed by all and is so easy that you’ll wonder what you ever did without it. Ingredients • One wide cucumber • Cream cheese • Alouette (my preferred brand) spreadable garlic & herbs cheese • Shaved deli smoked turkey • Romaine lettuce • Salt & pepper Directions 1. Slice off ends of cucumber. Cut cucumber into 5-inch pieces. 2. Cut cucumber into 1/4-inch thick horizontal slices. 3. For each sandwich, lay out cucumber slices and sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. 4. Spread one side of cucumber with cream cheese and place a few slices of smoked turkey and one piece of washed romaine lettuce. Make sure to pat dry lettuce well before adding. 5. Lightly spread the Alouette spreadable cheese on the other cucumber slice. 6. Stack the slices together and enjoy!

Summer Spring Rolls Dorren Robinson, Senior Editorial Consultant I first encountered these tasty morsels at a dive Vietnamese restaurant in the city and quickly became obsessed with them. After spending way to much money eating them nearly every day, I took a Vietnamese cooking class just so I could learn how to make them. They taste fresh and tangy and look as scrumptious as they taste. I often have my guest make their own. It’s a fun activity especially with a nice glass of chilled white wine. Spring Rolls • Spring roll wrappers: two per person for appetizers or four for dinner • Two bundles of Wai Wai or thin rice noodles • One pound cooked deveined shrimp with tails removed. The larger the better. Do not use salad shrimp. • One tomato cut in thin strips • 1/2 an onion finely chopped • One bunch of fresh cilantro • Fresh basil leaves - you can use regular, cinnamon or thai basil • Lime juice 1. Prep the onions and tomatoes. Wash the herbs and remove leaves from stems. Put herbs in different bowls. 2. Cook Wai Wai noodles until soft - about two minutes. Rinse in cold water to stop them from cooking. Put noodles in separate bowl and toss with lime juice. 3. Put about an inch of water in a large shallow plate or pie dish that is safe to be put on the stove at low head. 4. This is where the recipe gets tricky. Everything goes fast. Arrange your bowls where they are easily accessible. Put a wrapper in the warm water dish. Make sure it is fully submerged. When soft, about 20-30 seconds, remove from water and put on a clean plate. In the center of the wrapper lay two shrimp. Cover the shrimp with two large

basil leaves. Add a piece of tomato, a few onions a bit of cilantro and a small amount of the Wai Wai noodles. Squeeze a little lime juice on. Then fold the outside edges of the wrapper over the fillings and roll like a tortilla. The wrapper should be soft and pliable and seethrough. Make the roll tight. The presentation side should have the shrimp on top with the green basil leaves behind it. 5. Place the roll on a plate and cover with a moist towel until ready to serve. 6. Serve with two dipping sauces below. Peanut Dipping Sauce T = table spoon • 2 T Hoison sauce • 1T peanut butter (creamy or chunky) • water - to thin the sauce • Sriracha or other thick hot pepper garlic sauce • lime juice In small bowl, mix hoison and peanut butter. Add Sriracha to taste. Squeeze in the juice from half a lime. Mix. If it is not runny, add water. Vietnamese Dipping Sauce (Recipie taken from Get Saucy by Grace Parisi) • 2 large garlic cloves coarsley chopped • 1/4 cup of sugar • 5 T of fresh lime juice • 1/4 cup Asian fish sauce • 1 shallot thinly sliced • dash of crushed red pepper flakes Mix all ingredients together and stir in sugar until disolved. add red pepper if desired for “hotness.”

Special Pancakes Carolyn Smith Bryant, Contributing Writer I’ll be honest. I’m not known for my culinary skills. In fact, when my son was three, he told his teacher that ovens and stoves are “for burning things.” So when my beloved SL family asked me for my favorite recipe I thought long and hard for something that means a lot to me, is yummy and is impossible to screw-up. The following recipe comes out of my elementary school cookbook, by my friend’s German-born mother Kit Ober. My family ate these “Special Pancakes” for dinner several times a week as these big and puffy pancakes make a great-looking meal. Set out little dishes of powdered sugar, brown sugar, raisins, jam, chocolate chips, berries, sliced bananas, and let everyone customize their own when they are hot out of the oven. Ingredients / Serves 4 • 1/2 cup flour • 1/2 cup whole milk • 1/2 stick butter • 2 eggs • nutmeg Directions Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Melt butter in glass pie dish. Beat ingredients together and pour into dish over melted butter. Bake 15-20 minutes until puffed and light brown.

Lemon and Herb Sautéed Shrimp Ted Clayton, Social Editor As a life member of Weigh Watchers® I am most conscience of what I eat. Not because I am on a diet, but because I have indulged in a new way of healthy eating resulting in a healthier life. Especially in the summer months, I so enjoy shrimp. I have found the best way to blacken is to salute shrimp in hot pan with olive or coconut oil. Both dishes maybe served with sliced avocados, kale, etc. If you are a lover of shrimp and grits substitute the grits with oatmeal, believe me it is just as satisfying. Ingredients / Serves 4 2 Weight Watchers® SmartPoints per serving • 2 tsp oil • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice • 1 tsp lemon & herb seasoning • ½ tsp sea salt • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper • 2 tbsp chopped parsley • 2 garlic cloves, minced Directions 1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add shrimp and sauté 1 minute. Add lemon juice, lemon herb seasoning, salt and pepper; stir to coat shrimp. Sauté until shrimp are bright pink and cooked through, plus or minus 3 more minutes. 2. Remove from heat and stir in parsley. 3. Plate immediately and enjoy with a fresh side such as sliced avocado or kale.

Mom’s Casserole Michael Scott Evans, Contributing Photographer While pondering about what recipe I wanted to share, I must first disclose that I am far better suited behind the camera than in the kitchen. Given this, I had to reach back to my childhood, sift through countless Six Million Dollar Man episodes, and clear away the Benson & Hedges smoke clouds, to arrive at my favorite summer meal: Hot Dog Casserole. My mother would make this culinary delight for my two older brothers and me, back when we used to eat as a family in the 1970s. As soon as my brothers went off to college and I was asked politely to move out, the hot dog casserole gravy train abruptly ended. Now as an adult, the only time I get this childhood favorite is when my mother is feeling nostalgic or forgets my birthday. Ingredients • 4 large potatoes • 1 onion • 2 cans of Campbell’s Cheddar Cheese Soup • 5 hot dogs Directions: 1. Slice potatoes, dice onion and put in skillet with oil or butter. Sautee until desired texture 2. Put potatoes and onions in a deep casserole dish. 3. Add the cheddar cheese soup and stir. 4. Cut slits in width of the hot dogs. Place on top of the potatoes, onions, and cheddar cheese 5. Put in oven at 350 degrees and bake until hot dogs are brown Suggested pairing: Side of apple sauce and an episode of Welcome Back, Kotter.

Raspberry Limoncello Prosecco Paige Atwell, Associate Editor There is simply no better way to beat the southern heat than a fine cocktail. Since my first trip to the Isle of Capri in Italy, I have been obsessed with limoncello. While nothing compares to sipping the fresh liqueur on the lush colorful island, this cute and easy cocktail comes close. And the best part? It’s super easy to make and trust me, with each sip you’ll feel as if you were on the coast of Capri. Ingredients • 3 cups of chilled prosecco • 1 cup of chilled limoncello liqueur • 1 cup of frozen raspberries • Fresh mint sprigs as desired Directions 1. Combine prosecco and limoncello in a shaker and shake well. 2. Pour combination in a chilled wine glass. 3. Take the frozen raspberries and gently stir in to the mix. 4. Add mint sprigs for presentation or as desired.

THE SOPHISTICATE... Aspiring To Live Well

One humid southern morning six years ago, Stephanie Currey Ingram and I decided to take a long hike in the hills of Belle Meade on the White Trail. Along the way, we had one of those conversations that changes your course—and in hindsight—set a process in motion that would yield rich lessons about life, work and the importance of living well. I remember listening to the stream of ideas Stephanie was sharing with me. It was one of those moments where friends opened up and shared wild dreams and aspirations, hopes and fears, and were free enough to dare to dream. Her words held the kind of vulnerability and honesty that only exists in the middle of nowhere. As I see what has been created since, it makes me smile. PAVING A PATH TO GREATNESS Stephanie Ingram, philanthropist and entrepreneur has created a personal and professional development center in the Gulch area of Nashville. Once a vacant warehouse in an up-and-coming neighborhood, Ingram’s Wellspire is now a thriving learning destination where

98 slmag.net

top executives, leaders and seekers go to learn and grow. Wellspire is not only one of Nashville’s finest state-of-the-art learning centers, but hosts lectures, workshops and community events that inspire personal and professional wellness. I couldn’t help but to wonder what her biggest challenge must have been in creating this unique space. “There is this thought, ‘who am I to help people live better?’ When I set out to create this learning center, to be perfectly honest, there was this doubt I was facing—a doubt I have always battled with. It’s this voice that I think a lot of people have that gets in the way. It makes me get up the next day to do better, be kinder, and push harder. It’s the work I do every day that pushes me forward,” said Ingram. CIRCLE OF FRIENDS People say that we are as good as those around us. In my experience, some of the most meaningful moments were with great friends and like-minded people. That is what you will find at Wellspire.

“Community is powerful. I love to connect to new faces and see them come back—we are all on a similar learning journey. I feel most balanced when I have great friends whom I share transformational experiences with,” said Ingram. Further confirming the power of this space is Brenda Black, Senior Director of Philanthropy at the American Red Cross. “Attending the workshops at Wellspire has helped me grow my own sense of community. A sense of belonging, selfinvestment, shared resources, shared values and emotional connections through the workshops have been both personally and professionally valuable,” said Black. BREAKTHROUGH TO CLARITY “A big turning point was realizing I had to stop thinking so much and just take action,” said Ingram. She continued, “I got clear about my intentions and my story of why I do what I do and I move forward to create a positive momentum. We have to be and do as well as think.”

Don Miller, CEO of Storybrand, holds many workshops at Wellspire. The workshops help people figure out their mission, cut out all the ‘fluff ’ and operate with strength, clarity and purpose to grow. “Stephanie has a heart to help people find their sweet spot in life and once they find it, to live with clarity and purpose. She created Wellspire for that reason,” states Miller. As I think back to our talk on our hike that day, I am reminded of the power of intention, the fortitude of personal journey and the great efforts and payoffs of staying on course. I think we all aspire to live well. With each step of our journey, we discover more of who we really are, and those steps help us create better versions of who we want to be. sl

THE 1929 CLUB The downstairs butler greeted guests upon arrival at the Cheekwood Mansion with additional butlers upstairs serving champagne as guests entered the grand hall of the home. Yes, 1929 patrons gathered in the style and mind of being guests of the grand estate, a Nashville Treasure, Cheekwood. The Cheek Mansion is currently undergoing a major restoration and historic refurnishing project. When complete, the first two floors will closely resemble the same interior as when the Cheek family was in residence in the 1930’s. Reclaiming our past and celebrating the debut of the historic refurnishing of the Cheek Mansion was made possible with the generous support from the Andrea Waitt Carlton Family Foundation, the Bovender Family, Mr. and Mrs. William F. KEEPING UP WITH YOUR MAINTENANCE? Written by Dr. Brian Biesman Increasingly, iconic figures recognized for their timeless beauty are revealing some of their “secrets” for maintaining their appearance over a span of many decades. For example, Dolly Parton is a brilliant, talented, and iconic figure who has made no secret of the fact that she has enhanced her appearance regularly over the years. In fact, she once told Larry King, “I look at myself like a show dog. I’ve got to keep her clipped and trimmed and in good shape.” She has also been quoted as saying, “If I see something sagging, bagging or dragging I’ll get it nipped, tucked or sucked.” While Ms. Parton often made these remarks in jest, she truly is a thought-leader who helped break down the social stigma previously associated with rejuvenation procedures. She also popularized the concept of ongoing “maintenance” of one’s appearance, an idea that today has become the cornerstone for both rejuvenation and for prevention of age-related changes. On the contrary, Christie Brinkley is a beauty icon who, at age 62, has retained her super-model appearance without surgery. Ms. Brinkley recently has come forward and openly discussed her minimalistic, yet highly successful, approach in her recently released book “Timeless Beauty: Over 100 Tips, Secrets, and Shortcuts to Looking Great.” In her book she discusses her judicious use of Botox®, injectable fillers, noninvasive skin tightening, and laser treatments as well as her diet and exercise regimen.

104 slmag.net

All that being said, you do not have to be famous or have unlimited resources in order to keep yourself looking great over an extended period of time, nor do you have to undergo dramatic treatments which change your appearance or are noticeable to others. I completely agree with Ms. Brinkley who says, “The best results are not total transformations but nearly imperceptible changes that just make you look like a slightly younger version of you. This is an area where less really is more.” Employing this strategy, we routinely see patients who, as a result of excellent skin care, regular use of Botox® and fillers, periodic laser and skin tightening treatments, and adherence to a healthy lifestyle and diet look better today than they did a decade or more ago. The goal is to create both a long and short-term maintenance plan to maximize and maintain a youthful appearance. Seeing the sense of self-satisfaction and confidence instilled when patients look at the photographs we took before starting their treatments is one of the most rewarding aspects of my practice. If you are interested in making a plan to help you subtly look more youthful and to maintain your appearance over an extended period of time, please contact the office of Dr. Brian S. CapStar Bank hosted a most inviting open house to celebrate and showcase its new home in Nashville’s trendy Gulch for friends, clients and shareholders. The Skyline Terrace, a vista overseeing the city, hosted patrons as they enjoyed treats and cocktails. To spite the clear beautiful afternoon, CapStar umbrellas were handed out to guests as party favors. CapStar had much to celebrate, having launched as a public company on the Nasdaq exchange last fall. Any and everything is possible at CapStar with Claire Tucker and Dan Hogan at the helm.

76TH RUNNING OF THE IROQUOIS STEEPLECHASE There is no other Nashville sporting event like the Iroquois Steeplechase. Historic and rich in Southern traditions, Steeplechase is a time to celebrate horse racing at its finest. The Iroquois Steeplechase is one of the premier racing events in the country, thanks to 2017 Honorary Co-Chairs Marianne and Andrew Byrd and Luke Gregory. Prior to the running of the first race, the National Anthem was sung by Corrinne Parrish, a senior at Ensworth High School. See and be seen is the past time in between races with ladies sporting their creative chapeaux and the gents, also included in the annual hat contest, supporting decorative helmets and fedoras. Tent parties lined the hilltop for patrons to enjoy the day of racing, fabulous outdoor feast, cocktails, and air-conditioned men’s and women’s facilities. The Nashville Iroquois Steeplechase benefits the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. What a brilliant day to be seen at The 76th Running of the Iroquois Steeplechase.

IT SOLD FOR WHAT . . . ! Written by Gary A. Webb and Sarah Sperling

On Thursday evening, May 18th, while some of us were bidding on Swan Ball auction items to benefit Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, Sotheby’s New York was holding their annual spring Contemporary Art auction. Drawing an international crowd of bidders, collectors, art dealers and onlookers, the Sotheby crowd gasped and applauded when Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Untitled” blue skull painting sold for a record-breaking price of $110.5 million! It was purchased by Japanese billionaire and e-commerce entrepreneur, Yusaku Maezawa, making it the sixth most expensive work ever sold at auction. Over the past decade, we have seen tastes change. Major buyers in the art world have emerged with an unstoppable passion for Contemporary Art, representing work done from circa 1945 to the present. Historically, the top auction sales came from Impressionist and Modern Art, pieces dating from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Although we still see wellknown impressionist and modern artists such as van Gogh and Munch achieve record-breaking prices, contemporary artist such as Lichtenstein and Twombly are outselling their predecessors and demanding the highest prices on the auction block. Contemporary pieces may not be that old, but many of the most coveted have been out of the public spotlight for decades. These pieces have been kept in private collections, but over the past few years several have started to appear at auction. Early contemporary art collectors purchased works in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, often directly from the artists, and well before they had million-dollar price tags. Impressive to think how wise many of these collectors look now!

Back to Basquiat - how did a young, gritty, street-smart graffiti artist go from selling drawings for $50 to having a painting bring such a staggering price at auction in 2017? JeanMichel Basquiat (1960-1988) had a short but prolific life that ended with his tragic death at 27 of a drug overdose. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat was influenced by and had the opportunity to collaborate with New York artists such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. Although he began to gain success with his artwork during his lifetime, it is doubtful any one could have foreseen that his paintings would be as revered as they are today. Yet, true to life, a combination of raw talent and mystique that comes with a tragic story can result in a powerful alchemy. In auction history, there are only ten works of art that have sold for over $100 million. Basquiat has now joined an elite inner circle of artists along with Picasso, Giacometti, Bacon and Warhol, whose works have achieved this milestone. The sale of Basquiat’s “Untitled” blue skull painting also set records as the most expensive work by an American artist sold at auction (surpassing Warhol), the most expensive work by an African American artist sold at auction and the most expensive work made since 1980 ever sold at auction. A remarkable accomplishment for a young man whose life ended much too early. Basquiat’s “Untitled” blue skull painting was part of the estate of visionary collectors, Emily and Jerry Spiegel. Purchased from Christie’s in 1984, only two years after it was painted, the Spiegels paid $19,000, a record price at the time. That’s right, purchased for $19,000 and sold for $110.5 million - that’s quite a return on your investment… If only we all could be so wise and/or so lucky! sl

117TH ANNUAL ANDREW JACKSON FOUNDATION SPRING OUTING A year long celebration of the Seventh President’s 250th birthday was highlighted by the annual Spring Outing. For 128 years, The Ladies Hermitage Association, now known as The Andrew Jackson Foundation, has cared for and preserved the home of President and Mrs. Jackson, The Hermitage. Spring Outing is a time-honored tradition at The Hermitage. For 117 years, guests have gathered to celebrate and honor the memory and legacy of the family who called The Hermitage home. At a seated luncheon under tent on a warm windy spring day, Frances Spradley, Regent, called to order honored guest and Foundation members. Nashville’s leading ladies Laurel Buntin and Missy Eason were the event Co-Chairs. The lovely Karyn Frist first introduced her good friend and honored featured speaker Laura W. Bush, former First Lady of the United States. Mrs. Bush agreed with a statement made by President Jackson, “If you work hard and love your country, you could be President of the United States.” President Jackson, a self-educated orphan who exemplified military valor and became our nation’s first common man in the White House. Happy Birthday President Andrew Jackson.

11TH VISTING ARTIST SERIES The social season is in full bloom with art in the center of the social garden. The Lipman Group Sotheby’s International Realty hosted its 11th artist series in April with featured artist Julian B. Baker. Thinking outside the box is Baker’s comfort zone. He prefers to manipulate mediums with his hands rather than the traditional brush strokes. Julian expressed that when he is painting the energy around himself, it translates into power and he can some what control the chaos. Baker’s artistic inspirations come from an artist in a London gallery in the mid 90’s, Howard Hodgkin. Hodgkin’s use of vibrant colors and energy in his work enabled Baker to see what he could paint without restrictions or limitations. In addition to Baker, there was jewelry by Glen & Effie, live music by DJ Remedy, and a portion of art sales benefiting the CMT Association. Lipman Realty as always, gives back to the community.

Saving for Retirement: Covering Gaps in Your Planning

Whether you stay in the workforce or take a hiatus to care for family members, retirement funding should not be ignored. Taking a hiatus from the workforce — to raise children, to care for an elderly parent, or for any other personal reason — doesn’t mean you have to take a break from retirement planning. Even though retirement funds aren’t automatically deducted from a regular paycheck, you don’t have to experience a gap in retirement funding. Continue to contribute even during your hiatus.

Taking a hiatus from the workforce — to raise children, to care for an elderly parent, or for any other personal reason — doesn’t mean you have to take a break from retirement planning.

Opting to raise a family does not preclude you from saving for retirement. If you are outside of the full-time workforce for 10 years, which can be a big gap in funding your golden years, it’s important to keep squirreling money away so that it can grow over time. Even if you stop working for a brief period, it can be challenging to make up for the lost retirement dollars. Whether you stay in the workforce for the long haul or take a short- or long-term hiatus from a full-time career, keep these points in mind: Pay yourself first. From the time you start working, set aside up to 10 percent of your salary for retirement savings. Remember to pay yourself first before paying anyone else. A financial advisor can help ensure a diverse mixture of stocks and bonds that will match your comfort level with your life goals.

Carefully consider a professional hiatus. Think about if and when you plan to take a hiatus from full-time employment. The older you are, the longer it may take for your investments to show greater gains through reinvesting and existing capital. Continue to contribute. If you opt to leave the full-time workforce, continue contributing to retirement plans, including individual retirement accounts. In 2016, you can contribute $5,500 to your IRAs; $6,500 if you’re aged 50 or over. Stay up-to-date. If you take a hiatus, at some point you will need to prepare for rejoining the workforce. Make networking a priority, so that when you look for a job you have people to seek out for assistance. Will you return to your original career or head in a new direction? Whatever the case, stay technology savvy, and focus on jobs you want to pursue as you restart your career. Stay focused. Stay the course when investing. Work hard to keep emotions out of your portfolio decisions. Working with a financial advisor can help allay fears in down markets and ensure that your portfolio is properly diversified and balanced. Meet with your financial advisor regularly. Meet with your financial advisor on a quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis to help you determine what kind of gap you may be experiencing in saving for retirement and what steps you can take to narrow it. Prioritizing your own needs in retirement over the needs of others isn’t always easy. But it’s necessary. Women are busy, both at work and at home. They are juggling a lot of responsibilities, but think about your retirement savings because you may be more concerned about others than yourself.

THE TENNESSEE WALTZ

“I was waltzing with my darlin’ to the Tennessee Waltz...”. The annual Tennessee Waltz was held at the Tennessee State Capitol Building hosted by Governor Bill and Crissy Haslam. It was an evening benefiting the Tennessee State Museum, celebrating the 25th Waltz Gala. An outstanding, elegant evening; from ascending the steps of the historic building to the sounds of the Army National Guard Band playing the “Tennessee Waltz” to descending the massive interior marble staircase for the seated dinner. Gala Chairs Anne and Joe Russell welcomed guests to the cocktail reception on the second floor. “I remember that night and the Tennessee Waltz,” Patsy Cline.

SWAN BALL AUCTION

Plasma screens and digital photo highlights lined the walls of Belle Meade Country Club for the 2017 Swan Ball Auction. Guests and bidders were able to monitor their bidding through these screens while also using their phones. For the “Old Swan Ball Guard”, as myself, there were members of the Swan Ball Dance Committee assisting us old schoolers with bidding. The 2017 Auction Party under the direction of Auction Party Co-Chairs Paige Bainbridge, Shannon Finucane and Elizabeth Lamar serves as the primary venue for bidding on the extraordinary trips and unique treasures offered. Auction Party Design Co-Chairs, Lexie Armstrong and Blair Laborde transformed the country club using a garden theme, highlighting the beauty of the gardens at Cheekwood. The fresh garden decor featured cocktail bars covered entirely with moss, a flower wall of Kimberly Ferns and fabulous antique lanterns suspended from the cocktail tent ceiling. Promptly at 7 p.m. the live auction was under way in the grand ballroom conducted by Sotheby’s Auctioneer Christina Williams. A great 2017 Swan Ball Auction of bidding often and bidding high. Presenting sponsors for this event were Pinnacle Financial Partners and The Pointe on 30A.

THE FIFTY-FIFTH ANNUAL SWAN BALL

Continuing its legacy as one of the south’s most prestigious white tie charity events benefitting one of Nashville’s most fable botanical gardens and art treasure, Cheekwood, the Fifty-Fifth Annual Swan Ball was held on the first Saturday evening in June on the Swan Lawn. Swan Ball Co-Chairs Jody Hull and Amy Liz Riddick accomplished an incredible task this year and so very excitedly shared the unveiling of the historic restoration in the Mansion. 2017 Swan Ball Designers Mark D. Sikes and Sarah Bartholomew brought the beauty and color of the Cheekwood Gardens into play with the addition of hand-painted Chinoiserie scenes, mirrors, gilt and an abundance of blue and white Oriental ceramics. Presented annually since 1969, The Swan Award was given to Carolina Herrera. Herrera is a Swan Ball favorite, having presented her collection to attendees at the 1983 Gala. Nine-time GRAMMY winner Sheryl Crow was the headline entertainer of the evening, with Mish New York returning as the featured Jeweler of the Ball. A great Swan Ball year, benefitting Nashville’s Crown Jewel, Cheekwood.
