With Deena Adams, Executive Director of the American Lung Association in Kentucky after the 2019 climb
Adventurers, explorers, and extreme athletes are endlessly fascinating to me. I am taken by tales that range from the first foolhardy folks who rafted down the Grand Canyon woefully unprepared, to more well-equipped explorers attempting to go where no person has gone before. I’ve watched Free Solo, the NetFlix documentary about rock climber Alex Honnold, at least a half-dozen times, and I still sit at the edge of my seat as though the outcome will unexpectedly take a tragic turn. This time of year, my adulation turns to acts of bravery closer to home. For the past five years, I’ve been involved with the American Lung Association and its annual Fight For Air Climb, an event I initially signed up for to honor my late mother-in-law, who died of lung cancer. In the ensuing years, ALA in Kentucky Executive Director Deena Adams, an absolutely unflappable and cheerful champion of the cause, has deftly ratcheted up my and Sophisticated Living’s involvement with the organization, even cajoling this public speaking-averse writer into appearing on television twice! The 2020 Fight for Air Climb on February 1 at the PNC Tower will mark my third time tackling the vertical mile. And while I’m often accused of being a little off-kilter for actually enjoying the challenge presented by this extreme three-hour endurance event, this year in particular, I am aware that the perks of my participation go far beyond the calorie burn. In addition to helping promote the climb, Sophisticated Living sponsors a table at the annual Breath of Fresh Air Gala (see photos on page 90). This year, Marisa With my fellow vertical Wittebort, a non-smoker who was diagnosed in 2015 with Stage 4 lung cancer at mile and half-mile climbers at the 2019 Fight just 30 years old, was presented with the Lung Force Hero award. In photos from for Air Climb the event, it’s her wide, infectious smile, and not her baldness, that makes her stand out from the crowd. That evening, as she told her story, I was struck by her grace under fire. In spite of her dire diagnosis, she showed no outward signs of self-defeat in her demeanor. Speaking with the resoluteness of a general, Marissa seemed fully armored for the battle against cancer. She thanked the family and friends who had gathered that evening, and all along her somber journey, for galvanizing her courage. Her battle cry to the audience was to continue to fund the vital research that would lead to a cure for lung cancer. Although I didn’t know Marisa personally, when I learned of her passing just a month after the gala, I mourned the loss of life’s little moments we so often take for granted that she will never know. Every year as part of the Fight for Air Climb, the stairwell at the PNC Tower is lined with inspirational messages and photos of those who’ve lost their battle with lung disease as a reminder of why we’re climbing. Knowing that Marisa’s picture will now be among these is a poignant reminder to pick up the mantle where she left off. During this season of resolutions, when so many people pledge to move more and eat less, I hope you’ll consider signing up for the climb (climblouisville.org). There’s an option for all fitness levels, from a single slog (or sprint) up the 768 steps to my challenge of choice, the 8,728-steps that make up the vertical mile. Whichever route you choose, you’ll be doing something good for yourself and others—a win-win!

Held at the Lexington Center, nearly 500 people attended the 31st anniversary STARS Gala. During the event, the Hillenmeyer Family was recognized as 2019’s Community Philanthropist of the Year, with Dr. Jessica Croley and Dr. Kevin Donohue receiving Physician of the Year awards. Nearly $135,000 was raised to support the Emergency Department renovation project at Saint Joseph Hospital.

How Joseph Hardy's quest to find the ultimate fishing hole led to the establishment of the award-winning Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands. Written by Elliott Greene The story of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is an "only in America" yarn that weaves through the rich tapestry of Joseph Hardy's life and encompasses family, tenacity, ingenuity, and conviviality. Starting in the early 1900s, the Laurel Highlands became "the place" to build a country retreat among Pittsburg-area elites, including industrialist Willard F. Rockwell. His initial 60-acre purchase grew into the Nemacolin Trail Hunting Game Reserve, a private game reserve named for Delaware Indian Chief Nemacolin. When the property came up for auction in 1987, Joseph A. Hardy, III, founder of the 84 Lumber Company, attended intending to purchase a few acres near a lake or stream for his daughter Maggie, who loved to fish. After buying 550-acres, he and Maggie (who assumed the reigns at 84 Lumber in 1992 and became president and owner of Nemacolin in 2002), have since worked tirelessly to transform the property into a 2,000-acre world-class destination resort. "The Hardy family's strong ties to this place make us stronger as an organization," said Tom Smith, Director of Resort Culture. Staff at all levels speak affectionately of Maggie, who, along with her father, keeps a home on the property. During our visit, we heard numerous tales of Maggie's under-the-radar generosity.

Nemacolin offers five distinct lodging options, totaling 323 rooms. At the top is Falling Rock, a 42-room boutique property that has the distinction of being the only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond hotel in Pennsylvania. Opened in 2004, the design of the hotel, which overlooks the Mystic Rock golf course, pays homage to legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Falling Rock's distinctive triangle-shaped balconies provide an ideal vantage point to observe the magical morning mist as it tickles the treetops of the surrounding hillsides. Dedicated butler service and a bath soak menu at Falling Rock makes it easy to take advantage of the room's 200-gallon soaking tub (ideally while enjoying the nightly delivery of milk and cookies). "One of the things that makes this place so special is the personal relationships our repeat guests have with the butlers," said Kory Young, Director of Lodging. Cutting a fine figure at the crest of a hill just past the entry gates, the 124-room Château Lafayette draws heavy inspiration from the Ritz Paris. Whereas Falling Rock is imbued with jewel tones and earthy aspects, the spacious guestrooms in Château Lafayette boast gleaming marble bathrooms, vaulted ceilings (20feet in the first-floor suites!), and opulent crystal chandeliers. Prominently positioned in front of the Château's portecochère is Fatbird, a chubby, cherubic grouse sculpture that Maggie commissioned wildlife artist Barney Bollerhat to create. As the resort's official logo and mascot, the sculpture is a fitting introduction to the varied multi-million-dollar collection of art in all mediums on display inside and out. wheels is found in the Woodlands Auto Toy Store, home to a host of collector cars from the early 1900s onward, and in The Pride and Joy Airplane Hanger, whose most notable resident is a 1931 Pitcarin PA-8 once owned by Steve McQueen. Comfortable lodging without amenities makes for a great place to stop but not to stay, and the more than 15 dining options and 70 year-round activities make Nemacolin a pleasant place to linger. "We have everything but the ocean," said Smith. It would take a novelette to adequately outline everything the resort has to offer, so for brevity's sake, I've chosen to spotlight specific aspects of our recent visit. Dinner at Lautrec is a masterpiece of gastronomic theatre. Located in Château' Lafayette, it is one of only 30 restaurants in the world to hold the Forbes Five Star and AAA Five-Diamond awards simultaneously. The wood-paneled space itself is quite dramatic, outfitted with boldly patterned carpet, large scale Moulin Rouge artwork, and tables oriented around a central wine cellar. At the helm in the kitchen is Executive Chef Kristin Butterworth, an early pioneer of hyper-local dining. Upon arrival, guests receive a large red envelope with a wax seal. Inside is an invitation from Chef Butterworth to try the "Leap of Faith" experience, in which diners select ten ingredients from an illustrated list for their seven-course meal (with or without expert wine pairings). Adventurous eaters can circle the question mark and let the chef decide the menu. For the not-sobold, a seasonal prix fixe menu is also available. A champagne and caviar cart inaugurates the experience. Even the oft-humble bread service is elevated, thanks to butter imported from France, local honey, and Sicilian olive oil (the truffle scones are exemplary). At the conclusion of our dining odyssey, we were given a chef-signed copy of the ingredients list as a souvenir.

The 140-acre Field Club boasts 35 stations and two five-stand sporting clay pavilions, along with an Orvis Fly Fishing Center with half- and full-day guided trips. At 96, Mr. Hardy visits the center twice a week for treatments and remains a driving force in investigating sustained paths to wellness. Under the swirling lights of the main stage of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal this past June, concertgoers waved their hands in the air as bodies ebbed and flowed to the beat of music so loud you could feel the reverberations in your bones (montrealjazzfest.com). Surveying the scene, where the carefree enthusiasm of the singing crowd rivaled the volume of the performers, make me realized that so much joy in one place is hard to find these days. Montréal seems to be the exception. The city is like an infectious smile; once it takes hold, you can't help but soak it up. Home to the world's largest jazz festival, Montréal is a city whose passions run deep, as evidenced by a chockfull annual events calendar that boasts a festival for everyone. Opened in 1912, and commanding an entire city block, the Ritz-Carlton Montréal has the distinction of being the first hotel in North America to fly the Ritz-Carlton flag (rooms from $700/night; ritzcarlton.com/Montreal). The neighborhood surrounding hugely popular Mount Royal Park, which marks the city's highest point, includes colorful houses, and one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Many facades of the buildings that line Saint-Laurent Boulevard, home to the renowned Schwartz's Deli, are jazzed up with giant artworks created as part of the MURAL Festival (muralfestival.com). In the winter, you'll likely become very familiar with RÉSO, Montréal's underground network that provides access to more than 1,700 shops, restaurants, and several major hotels. This subterranean city started with the construction of the Place Ville-Marie office tower in 1962. Designed by I.M, Pei and Henry N. Cobb, the building offers the city's highest observatory. Booking a private yoga session is a highly personal way to experience the space. Nearby, housed in a circa 1845 building that was most recently a sprawling furniture store, is Monarque, a fine-dining destination that opened in 2018 to instant acclaim (restaurantmonarque.ca/en/). Located in Victoria Square, the W Montreal's Bartizen is an intimate space conceived by Michael Isted to focus on Quebec gins and various tonics. I sampled from the "Gin and Tonic and Perfume" menu. Part chemistry and part cocktail, each drink misted with perfumes made from essential oils that deliver radically different

flavor profiles based on the gin's aromatics. A plentiful charcuterie board laden with Quebec-smoked meats accompanied our libations. Hiding behind a buttoned-up former bank façade, the W Montréal's public and private spaces sport lux contemporary furnishings geared for global jet setters. Standouts among the 152 guest rooms are the WOW and EWOW suites with outdoor terraces (rooms from $158/night; Marriott.com). A hidden gem in Montréal's business district is Japanese restaurant Jatoba (jatobamontreal.com). Complementing the appealing aesthetic, complete with a plethora of plants bathed in natural light and sleek black seating, is a menu devised by star chef Olivier Vigneault. Also worth seeking out is the up-and-coming area of Griffintown, which is buzzing with a vibrant art scene and global cuisine along the Rue Notre-Dame Quest. Unique experiences abound in Montréal, and chances are a friendly local will be happy to cue you in on where to find the best espresso (Café Balance), the best poutine (too many opinions to list), or the chicest cafe (the Crew Cafe). The main launch event for DBX took place in Beijing, China, with a secondary reveal staged during the Los Angeles Auto Show. "I can't emphasize enough how incredibly exciting and significant DBX is for Aston Martin," said Dr. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda's President & Group CEO, at the Beijing launch. "Through its development alone, this beautiful SUV has already taken the company into new territories and in inspiring directions. We have both delivered this model through our expertise, but also by garnering invaluable experience and knowledge from external counsel, including our Female Advisory Board. This is a real landmark for this great British brand, and I promise that DBX will reward all who experience it in their everyday lives."

A bespoke chassis allowed Aston Martin's design team to tailor the vehicle size and proportions to suit the specific aims of DBX. A long wheelbase permits optimization of interior space while keeping a distinctively sleek, low roofline. Designers devoted more than six months to defining the position of the driver within the vehicle. The result is a cabin with superior visibility that gives the driver relaxed confidence backed by dynamic performance. "We've successfully managed to achieve a package with the proportions and mechanical layout that allows sports car styling to be applied to a versatile, five-seat vehicle in a beautiful way," said Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's Chief Creative Officer. Noteworthy is the involvement of a Female Advisory Board and numerous customer clinics, both of which the company says were crucial in the design and placement of each screen, button, and dial. As a result, Aston Martin says that the DBX can accommodate the world's 99th percentile male and 5th percentile female. One of the most distinguishing architectural features of
the interior is a bridged center console that is ample enough for stashing a handbag or large water bottle. The extent to which Aston Martin/s design team exhausted every possible passenger scenario is evidenced by their work with a panel of children at the company's design studio. These efforts, as well as DBX's full-length panoramic glass roof and expansive side windows, create a sense of space and lightness with encapsulating views for up to five passengers and their gear. Adaptive triple volume air suspension, combined with the latest 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC), and electronic adaptive dampers provide the new SUV with a vast range of benefits while on the move as well as during loading and unloading. The eARC can limit DBX's body roll for handling that is much more akin to that of a sports car than an SUV. With a sound that is unquestionably Aston Martin, powering DBX is a new version of the 4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine found in both the DB11 and Vantage. Boasting cylinder
deactivation to enhance fuel economy, the turbocharged V8 is capable of propelling DBX from 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 181mph. Transmitting this power and torque to the ground is a nine-speed automatic gearbox mated to an allwheel-drive system with active differentials. As expected for an SUV of this caliber, a host of available packages are available for tailoring DBX to customers' needs, sports or pastimes. For instance, the amenities as part of the pet package include a portable washer, and the snow package delivers boot warmers. Top-tier customization is available as part of the 'Q by Aston Martin' program. Scheduled to be built in Aston Martin's purpose-built manufacturing facility in St Athan, Wales, the MSRP for DBX is $189,900. The first 500 owners of this landmark model will benefit from an exclusive '1913 Package' that includes a unique fender badge, sill plaques, and an inspection plaque detailing its limited run. sl

BOTTLED HISTORY Tohu is a contemporary wine label owned by descendants of New Zealand's original Māori landowners. Written by Bridget Williams "New Zealand promises to be favorable to the vine," prophesized English missionary Samuel Marsden in a diary entry. His 1819 plantings in the Bay of Islands are the first recorded in New Zealand. While goats quickly destroyed everything in Marsden's unfenced vineyard, the wine industry in the country has since flourished, with more than 700 wineries annually exporting goods valued in excess of $1.8 billion. Although grapes have been cultivated in New Zealand for 200 years, it wasn't until 1998 when Tohu Wines, the first indigenousbranded wine label, was founded. Wakatū Corporation, Tohu's parent company, has approximately 4,000 shareholders who are all descendants of the original 254 Māori landowners of the Nelson, Marlborough, Tasman Bay, and Golden Bay regions. "Our vision in founding a wine company was to have a platform to share our culture, story, and values with the world," said Wakatū chairman Paul Morgan. The Māori, who made their way to New Zealand from eastern Polynesia via waka (canoes) more than 680 years ago, comprise approximately 15% of New Zealand's present population. After losing much of their land through European colonization, a Māori renaissance in the 1970s, saw Māori people coming together to regain their tribal lands, language, art, and culture. When the Los Angeles Auto Show debuted in 1907, Detroit’s Marvel Motor Company was advertising its Roadster, a two-seater runabout with 14 horsepower, as “a car of superior merit.” A century later, a 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant on display at the 2019 show packed a jawdropping 591 horsepower under the hood—a superior swag wagon. Manufacturers from around the world increasingly use the LA Auto show to showcase their latest and greatest models. The show has also evolved to meet changing times, and now includes AutoMobility, the industry’s first trade show to combine technology and automotive sectors through new product launches, award programs, and panel discussions focused on pressing issues related to transportation and mobility. Each subsequent owner has made their mark while taking care to preserve the home's historic character. As part of a compound dedicated to family, there's no doubt the Joyes' would approve of the current owners, who relied on interior designer Libby Rush of Bittners to integrate a host of family heirlooms into an overall design scheme that is both forwardthinking and timeless. The exterior of the clapboard home is organized into a central two-story section defined by a gambrel roof and a pair of projecting wings, each with a fireplace. The layout creates a central landscaped courtyard at the entry, further defined by a charming white picket fence.

It feels like springtime the moment you step inside the front door. Rush did a masterful job of utilizing the homeowners' existing pieces, both from their previous historic residence in the Connecticut Western Reserve area of Ohio and those passed down through the family, and combining them with contemporary upholstery, paint finishes, and wallcoverings. In the extended entry hall, Rush created an inviting vignette by flanking a gilt chinoiserie-style mirror with a pair of Japanese paintings on silk that belonged to the wife's mother. Beneath the mirror is a lovely antique five-drawer chest on bracket feet that is bookended by a pair of cane back open armchairs with velvet upholstery subtly reminiscent of a giraffe-print. Serving as the striking backdrop is a wallcovering from Seabrook, whose pattern dually conjures up notions of a monotone animal print or the rippled reflection of light on water.

A light-filled formal living room spans the entirety of the home's central section; its rear wall is an expanse of glass that opens to a bluestone terrace with woods beyond. The color palette builds upon an Oushak rug that represents one of the few pieces purchased for the home. Well-suited to the scene is a painting of a snow-covered landscape by Russian artist Ivan Fedorovich Choultse. Noteworthy for his snow scenes that seem to radiate light, Choultse was the court painter for Czar Nicholas II. Another artist, Rebecca Graves of R. Graves and Company, was commissioned to create the subtle five-color faux-finish on the walls at either end of the room. Brunschwig & Fils upholstery graces a pair of armchairs with bullion fringe trim as well as a wingchair the wife purchased in the 1980s for $20 at a country club sale. The wife credits her sister with choosing the Bouquet pattern. Over the years, as they've moved and redecorated, the

wife said they would select a color from the lively print to emphasize in their decor. While the Bouquet print has endured, a unique foil to this traditional pattern is presented by subtly shimmery geometric upholstery by Hodsoll McKenzie on a pair of slipper chairs placed in front of the fireplace. Graves also gets credit for the incredible trompe l'oeil walls in the dining room, which resemble panels of lilac-colored silk wallpaper, even down to the seam lines. On top of this are handpainted gold and silver flowers, a design element culled from the silk drapery, which came from the wife's parents. The wife said the unique wall color was inspired by the dining room in her parent's home. At the far end of the room is a bay with floor-toceiling windows that is large enough to accommodate a grand piano. The gold-on-grey embroidered upholstery on the dining chairs mimics the geometric pattern on the rug.

Previous owners converted the original garage into a family room and renovated the kitchen. The latter was left mainly as-is, but Rush redesigned the family room to pay homage to the rustic folk art aesthetic predominant in the homeowners' previous residence. A nearby powder room attains jewel box status courtesy of a burnished gold wallcovering from Folia. A departure from the predominating color scheme elsewhere in the home, the walls of the study, which the homeowners' created from a former front bedroom, are a vibrant red hue. animals enliven the armchair upholstery, while real ones feature principally in the artwork and accessories. Upstairs are a pair of en suite bedrooms. One is painted an ethereal shade of blue and features a custom headboard created by the Bittners woodworking shop. A pair of figural lamps that belonged to the wife's grandmother rest atop the nightstands. The wife refers to the pretty-in-pink guest room as "the fun room." The pattern on the wool rug hearkens to similar shapes sprinkled throughout the first floor. "Stratton Hammon homes have wonderful details to work with," said Rush. "In this case, we rose to the challenge of keeping within the original character while fulfilling the clients' wish list." sl

THE BOLT AND THE BEAUTIFUL
Lexington native Alex Mason gives a historic storefront in Versailles a new lease on life as the showroom for her fabrics, wallpapers, and fine art. Written by Bridget Williams / Photography by Andrew Kung Fine artist, textile designer, and entrepreneur Alex Mason is no stranger to naysayers. In high school, when she told her parents that she wanted to become an artist, they were less than thrilled with her pronouncement. "A recurring theme of my life has been people telling me I wouldn't be able to make money as an artist," said Mason. She added that for as long as she can remember, she's "just wanted to make things." The Lexington native followed her heart, majoring in studio art at the University of Vermont and then going on to earn an M.F.A. from the Pratt Institute in New York City. She met her husband, who works in the television and film industry, through mutual friends at a party in New York City. The pair moved to New Zealand and then to California. Over time, Alex's paintings made their way to private collections, including the Bellagio in Las Vegas and St. Ermin's in London, England. As the years went on, a growing chorus remarked that her paintings would make beautiful textiles. Embracing the opportunity to take her art in a new direction, and

with her husband's encouragement, she enrolled in textile design classes to learn pattern repeat. Testing the waters in textile design coincided with Alex's first foray into motherhood. After a series of costly missteps, she decided to look for a business partner with experience in the industry. During her investigations, Brian Ferrick's name continued to come up. Alex said that Ferrick, who helped designers Kathryn Ireland and Michael Smith launch their textile lines, possessed the know-how and connections she was lacking. "The LA interior design world is so social and they love to party together. Brian was a part of that scene and I knew he could immediately open the right doors," she said. The two co-founded Ferrick Mason in 2008 and started with great aplomb, using 34-yards of their Calliandra fabric to upholster the walls of a sitting room in a show house that was published in LUXE magazine. Each textile starts with an original painting by Alex, with the resulting repeat printed on cotton, Belgian or Irish linen, or polyester (for outdoor applications).

When the recession hit, the still fledgling Ferrick Mason struggled, prompting Alex to move back to California from Australia to save the company. She took a majority ownership stake and today owns ninety-five perfect of the company. "We took baby steps to sustainability, with me cutting and ironing samples by hand and setting up a network of showrooms," she explained. In 2015, after years of moving with her husband and two daughters around the globe for his television and film work, Alex said her husband brought up the idea of moving to Kentucky. With Ferrick Mason firmly established and able to operate from anywhere, it was an idea she was immediately receptive to. And while her company was well-known among designers on both coasts, Alex was happy to have an opportunity to broaden the brand's awareness in her hometown. Since the fall of 2018, the headquarters of Ferrick Mason have occupied a historic storefront on Main Street in Versailles. The crisp, tall-ceilinged showroom gives no hint at the buckets of sweat equity Alex and her husband, who acted as their own general contractors, poured into the renovation. "There were days when it was so overwhelming that we'd alternate between screaming and laughing," Alex explained.
If you're lucky, Pickle, the Mason family's rescue dog and showroom mascot, will be there to offer a warm welcome at the door. Hanging from wood pegs on the showroom walls are fabric samples in each available color way for a given print. Cushy seating in the center of the space upholstered in Ferrick Mason fabric demonstrates the power of a punchy print. As your eye makes its way up to the meticulously restored tin ceiling, it meets panels of Ferrick Mason wallpaper. Printed in-house, this bespoke product was added to the collection two years ago. At the appointment-only showroom, it's quite a treat to peruse the fabrics with Alex, who proudly points that her firstever design—Warfield—created fifteen years ago as a textile design student, is a perennially popular print. Calliandra, the print that launched the brand, remains a best-seller more than a decade after the company started. In addition to selling through interior designers, Alex has partnered with the design website Chairish.com to create limited-edition prints and offer a selection of accent pillows and upcycled furniture upholstered with her fabrics. slmag.net

Placing Ferrick Mason in show homes continues to be a key part of Alex's brand-building strategy. She recently partnered with Louisville-based interior designer Chenault James on a custom-colored fabric for the House Beautiful Whole Home Concept House in Nashville. The Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach, which will be open from February 1 through March 1, will feature Ferrick Mason's chinoiserieinspired Good Fortune fabric.
