From the Publisher I lost my 11-year-old beagle, Roadie, a few weeks ago, and boy, does it hurt. He should have lived a few more years. So, this is Roadie’s story.

It all began when my then 9-year-old son, Charlie, visited Love at First Sight Puppy and Kitten Adoption Center with Melissa. Charlie fell in love with a beagle puppy named Wills. When I came home from work, Charlie immediately started talking to me about adopting Wills and showing me pictures on the adoption center’s website. I said I was open to it, but he needed to take his older brother, Jack, age 12, to meet Wills before deciding. The next day, Charlie, Jack, and Melissa visited Wills while I was out of town overnight on a business trip. Melissa was not going to get the puppy without talking to me, so she tried to reach me unsuccessfully when I was in a meeting. As fate would have it, a man walked into Love at First Sight right before closing time and wanted to adopt Wills and took the puppy right from under my kid’s noses. Twenty minutes later, when I could return Melissa’s call, my kids were bawling in the back of her car. When I tried to console them by telling them that God has a perfect plan, Jack replied tearfully, “well, God’s wrong!”

When the kids refused to eat dinner (even offered their favorites), the boys had a miserable night upstairs pouring over a dog breed book, thinking they would never be happy without “the most perfect puppy in the whole world.” Melissa then shared this sad tale on Facebook, questioning that perhaps she had not done enough to fight for Wills; a friend promptly responded that her sister raises beagles on a farm in Columbia, TN and that she had a litter with one puppy left. After exchanging pictures and “sealing the deal” in secret, arrangements were made for the next day. Melissa drove two exhausted and very quiet kids to their schools and drove an hour down to Columbia to secure the new family member. She surprised the kids when they came home from school with him greeting them with a green bow around his neck—the kids shrieked, “this one is so much better”—sorry, Wills (the man returned him a week later).

With his arrival, he made the Mahanes family more complete, as only animals can do.

Roadie was the uber-alpha male. I’ve been “nipped at” by him so many times, I lost count. Roadie was a curmudgeon. He didn’t like to be picked up or disturbed while sleeping, and you never wanted to get between him and food. We have a saying in the Mahanes household—Respect the Growl! (hard for me to do). But Roadie could be very sweet as long as it was his idea and on his terms. Mainly, he just wanted to be around us all the time. If you were lucky, he would come behind you when you were sitting on the sofa and curl up around your neck. That was special.

Roadie was his own worst enemy. Even as a puppy, the vet described him as very food motivated. He was very clever and sneaky about stealing food. He would jump higher than you thought he could, take things off the counter and abscond with them outside through the doggy door into the backyard. Taking out the trash in the morning, I would find a random empty bag of bread or an open box of Oreos on the lawn. Hence, Roadie became overweight. Despite many attempts and diets, we didn’t get his weight back to a healthy level until his hind legs were too weak to jump up on beds and furniture. He tried his darndest to befriend the interloper, Dolly Parton, a pocket-sized version of Roadie, who arrived in October of 2019. We think that it helped regain a bit of his youth, and he had a cute companion that was constantly seeking his attention and keeping him on his toes.

Last August, Roadie was diagnosed with lymphoma. Twice a day, I religiously gave him his chemo and steroid meds. It gave me an enormous sense of well-being to care for him the best I could. When we had his follow-up appointments in October and December, the lymphoma was in remission, and the vet said that Roadie would probably live out his lifespan. However, in his follow-up appointment in March, cancer had returned, and he died a few days later in a blanket in my lap as we were rushing him to the emergency vet clinic.

Well, I sure still miss him. The house seems somewhat empty without him. Pets are a member of the family. They have relatively short lives. All you can do is love them and give them the best life you can provide them while they are with you on this earth. Roadie, you were a blessing, pal!

GRAND PLANS The Manning promises resort living at home Written by Amy Atkinson/Renderings Courtesy of The Manning One of Nashville’s newest and most inspiring residential projects, The Manning, was created when Richard Rhea, development partner at The Manning, and his wife, LaRawn, were looking for the perfect home here in Nashville to fit their lifestyle and were inspired to create it together. The Rheas love living in Nashville. However, they also love to travel, especially to Colorado, where they had a vacation home for many years and still enjoy spending time when they can.

They saw the need for a luxury home here in Nashville that would provide all the amenities available in a large estate-sized home and include the ease and security that would come with a condominium.

They wanted to offer upscale, secure, and spacious; outdoor spaces and amenities; and the ability to feel comfortable “locking up and leaving for a couple of months to travel.” They also desired to be in the Belle Meade area since it has the ideal proximity to social activities combined with access to grocery stores, parks, restaurants, shops, friends, and health care.

partner Don Meeks and architect Jim Lowen to help put their vision into reality. They conducted focus groups, held neighborhood meetings, met with designers, and began creating the ideal home for people who were at a similar stage in life – and The Manning came into being.

Most of The Manning buyers are ready to downsize a bit from their large, older estates but want to maintain their upscale lifestyle and standard of living. Most buyers are attracted to the idea of not managing the running of a home while still having a luxurious residence where they can be proud to invite friends and family over to entertain. They can enjoy the outdoor spaces, beautiful gardens, and a pool with cabanas without maintaining all of that themselves.

The Manning is a $100 million development project of 36 luxury condominiums scheduled to open in the Belle Meade area near the intersection of Woodmont Boulevard and Harding Road in December of 2021. “Greg Ladd, founder of Cross Gate Gallery in Lexington, KY, spends a great deal of time cultivating artists who he believes should apply their considerable skills to creating sporting art. Because Ladd’s gallery is located in Kentucky horse country, he favors images of Thoroughbreds and racing, although he also displays other examples of the sporting art genre, including scenes of hunting and fishing. He carries relevant 19th and 20th-century paintings and sculptures, but many of his offerings are contemporary pieces created by artists who had painted few Thoroughbreds before meeting Ladd. During much of the gallery’s 45 years of existence, Ladd has invited artists to stay at a cottage at Keeneland so that they can observe horse auctions, races, and farms.”

Two Divergent Career Paths Lead to Lasting Wealth Management Business Written by Mariner Wealth Advisors and Dave Mahanes / Photographed by Ashley Hylbert In 1985, Larry Sacks immigrated from Johannesburg, South Africa to the United States. Along with his wife and infant son, he first landed in New York in December to bitter temperatures, traveling on to Nashville. They chose to call this comparatively smaller city home because of family ties—his sister and her husband are doctors at Vanderbilt Hospital.

Larry began his career as an accountant and, once in Nashville, joined a family and small-business tax practice, which he later purchased. He provided proactive tax advice for a variety of clients, including small businesses, high-net-worth individuals, physicians, and trusts.

Meanwhile, in a divergent path from Larry’s, David Goldberg grew up deeply rooted in Tennessee, working in his family’s retail clothing business in Tullahoma. He and his family took pride in serving the needs of the community for 35 years.

Then came the 1970’s economic crisis, high interest rates, gas shortages, and a deep recession in the United States, which led David’s family to close their business. As David looked to the future, he decided to apply his customer service skills, number crunching, and trend spotting to a new career. “All roads led me to the new field of financial services; my skills crossed over, and after 35 years, I’m an overnight success,” he mused.

So how did Larry and David meet and go on to form a wealth management business spanning 16 years before merging with Mariner Wealth Advisors in 2019? Larry sought David’s advice on wealth management-related research, and they became fast friends. David had worked at a regional brokerage firm, J.C. Bradford & Co. for 15 years. He eventually decided to start an independent investment management business under the Raymond James flag. Three years later, because investment advisory and accounting clients like their approach in 2007, he and Larry founded Snow Creek Wealth Management.

Eventually, the two believed that being acquired by Mariner Wealth Advisors, a privately held wealth advisory firm, would give them the ability to offer clients business continuity. They also needed additional resources to grow the business.

They don’t want to do our work, but they are very smart, so we offer wealth advice to help them stay on the road to their financial goals.”

When asked about the future of their business two years in with Mariner Wealth Advisors, Larry said, “I foresee substantial growth based on the firm’s marketing, planning, and professionalism. David notes that there will always be a need for financial planning, investment management, and tax advice. Larry Sacks: I have been married to my wife Jo Anne for 37 years.

She is an audiologist. I have a son, daughter, daughter-in-law, and grandson. My son and his family live in Nashville. My son is an ENT specialist, and my daughter-in-law works for Cigna insurance. My grandson is four years old. My daughter lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she is completing her plastic surgery residency at the University of Michigan.

DM: What made you decide to move to the United States from Johannesburg?

LS: We were encouraged by my sister and brother-in-law to move to Nashville. (They were already living here at the time) to make a better life for ourselves and ensure a better future for our family. We believed in the American Dream and welcomed the opportunities we were given.

DM: What do you like best about living in Nashville?

LS: We really enjoy the lifestyle and the weather since we like to spend time outdoors. We also feel like it is a great place to bring up children, and we now have a large extended family living in Nashville and spend a lot of time together.

DM:What do you like to do in your spare time?

LS: I’m an avid runner. My wife and I had run over 50 marathons by our 25th wedding anniversary. We still run today for fun. I also enjoy a good game of golf.

DM:How do you give back to the community?

LS: I volunteer time to Achilles International Nashville, a local chapter of an international nonprofit that pairs athletes with disabilities (e.g., visual impairments, physical disabilities) with athletes. I help guide blind runners to help them complete races.

David Goldberg: I have 2 daughters, one’s a biotech engineer in a Covid lab, and the other is head of sales at bio-pharma tech company.

DM: You were good friends with my father and his longtime financial advisor. Do you remember how you met him?

DG: Yes, I cold-called him when I was a new broker at J. C. Bradford; he was the President of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg. Tullahoma was the next town over so we had immediate rapport.

DM: What was it like growing up in Tullahoma?

DG: Pretty good experience. The schools were excellent because most of the families were professionals—engineers and scientists, and education mattered. They came from all over the US and the world so ideas and life weren’t stagnant.

DM: What do you like best about living in Nashville?

DG: Music is the art of the community.

DM: I know you are a big music fan and audiophile, tell me about that.

DG: It just makes my brain and my emotions feel something.

Whether it’s the beat, rhythm, instrumentation, lyric, region, old or new, it’s a source of genuine pleasure.

DM: You have a daily meditation practice. How does that fit into your life?

DG: Essential tool for me being alive. Each morning I start the day with a yoga/Pilates practice and a cup of coffee. I stretch my body for about 40 minutes and sit for 20 minutes with meditation to focus my thoughts so that I may have a day that’s intentional and a day that pays attention.

DM: You are into horticulture as well are you not?

DG: I’m a gardener; I like to grow things. I’m a steward of native flowers, bulbs, plants and shrubs. It’s all so rewarding for me. No matter the season, I love to bring blends of color, shapes and layers to my gardens. The garden provides a habitat for birds, butterflies and other animals. Furthermore, my neighbors enjoy the landscape as much as I do; I hope it brightens their day and inspires them to do a little yard work too.

DM: What other things do you do with your spare time?

DG: I love bicycles, reading, crossword puzzles, and hockey. I have an Aussie that wants a long walk every day so that’s also a priority.

DM: How do you give back to the community?

DG: In the community, I’m mentoring high school students to gain college scholarships with the Tennessee Achieves program. And, since the covid pandemic began last year, I’ve been a working volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank warehouse in MetroCenter.

FULL NELSON Dave chats with Nelson Andrews Written by Dave Mahanes

I have known Nelson Andrews for many years since we first met at the Oyster Easter event at Belle Meade Mansion and First Presbyterian Church. Nelson is truly a 21st Century Renaissance man. He is a successful businessman, philanthropist, public servant, dedicated family man, and musician. Nelson is a dear friend and someone I look up to, so it is a great pleasure to have a chat with him in this issue of Sophisticated Living Nashville.

Dave Mahanes: Nelson, tell me a little bit about your business, Andrews Transportation Group.

Nelson Andrews: We started as Shore Severs Cadillac in Detroit. We came to Middle Tennessee in 1979 as Andrews Cadillac and recently celebrated our 40th Anniversary. We added Land Rover to Andrews Cadillac in 1988, opened it as Land Rover Nashville in 1998, added Jaguar Nashville in 2014, and are currently undergoing our largest renovation in 40 years with the addition of a new carwash facility, 16 additional service bays, and structured parking.

DM: During the COVID-19 crisis and a horrible economic environment in the summer of 2020, Andrews Transportation Group had its most successful months ever, and that sales have increased by 200%. How on earth did you do that?

NA: I’m not 100% sure where the percentage increase comes from, but we do feel like we navigated 2020 as well as we could. As COVID19 hit last year, we committed to our team that we would not do any layoffs. In advance of the national “paycheck protection program” and other initiatives, we also committed to putting a financial foundation under our team so they could have at least some degree of stability during a very uncertain time. As a result, we did not lose any of our team members, and we were actually able to grow the team by hiring strong performers who other local companies laid off. We have been in a very good position to offer a great experience delivered by familiar faces as the automotive market came back in the second half of the year. We finished out 2020 with a growing market share for all three of our brands and hitting many of the sales objectives we set pre-COVID.

Nelson and Trish

DM: For as long as I have known you, you have been very committed to philanthropy. I saw a list of a least 40 non-profits with which you have been involved over the years, including Williamson County Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center, Owen Graduate School, United Way, Tennessee Land Trust “Once in a Blue Moon,” and the YMCA, to name a few. Tell me about your passion for giving back to the community.

NA: I grew up around volunteerism, going back all the way to Shore Severs Cadillac in Detroit and their partnership with Focus Hope. As a graduate student at the Vanderbilt Owen School, my classmate Debra Grimes was on the management team at The Oasis Center, and she put us to work volunteering. That was the start of my service relationships in the local community, and it has grown from there. One of our real blessings in the Nashville community is the heart for service. A tremendous portion of our community is involved in service work one way or another. As a local car dealer, we have many team members and customers who are attached to non-profits one way or another. A fun part of my job is that friends and customers who come through the store bring me up to date on what is going on with their service projects, and we try to get 30 slmag.net

involved and help as we are able. At this point, though, we have so many ongoing sponsorships it feels like I need to cut back on something any time I add something new to keep a balance.

DM: Andrews Transportation Group has been a long-time sponsor of the Iroquois Steeplechase Event, which benefits Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. What has been your involvement with the Steeplechase, and what are your thoughts about this year’s event?

NA: I’ve been around the Iroquois Steeplechase since my friends and I were on the hillside as teenagers while our parents were all down in the boxes. Early in our marriage, Trish and I were part of a tailgating group that enjoyed the infield every year and had quite a picnic spread. About a decade ago, we connected with Holly Hirschman, GeorgeAnn Dingus, and Jeff Bradford and were able to put together the “Best Turned Out” sponsorship package that we have been doing ever since. Iroquois Steeplechase and the support the event raises for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is a huge deal for our community. We feel so strongly about the work they do that even when the event was canceled in 2020, we continued our sponsorship to support the

work of the hospital. Iroquois Steeplechase is much more than a social event or promotional opportunity.

DM: In 2019, you were elected as a City Commissioner for the City of Brentwood. What motivated you to run for this?

NA: I’ve lived in Brentwood most of my life. When two commissioners I greatly respect—Jill Burgin and Betsy Crossley—decided not to run for reelection, the conversation started about who would pursue the open seats. I’ve been involved in supporting the Brentwood City Commission for a long time, but at that point, I realized that for me, it was time to step off the sideline and onto the field.

DM: I also know you to be a dedicated family man who enthusiastically attends his four children’s activities and that you especially enjoyed your son Trevor’s Ravenwood High School football games. With all that you have going on, how do you manage the family/work/charity balance?

NA: We are lucky enough to have four great kids who are all active in various activities. Trevor gets a fair amount of attention because of the role he played with Ravenwood Football, but

Joslyn, Alec, and Alison all have passions they are similarly committed to. I really can’t say I do a very good job keeping those things in balance. At best, I try to start my day every day, trying to figure out what matters most so that it gets done, and try to make peace with the things I probably should do but don’t.

DM: Before we wrap this up, I want you and everybody to know that you are a hell of a great drummer and a pretty good guitarist too. You also have an outstanding guitar collection. How does music fit into your life?

NA: I grew up playing in the BHS drumline and continued through Vanderbilt playing music with friends. There is probably still some “Exit/In funk” stuck somewhere on my drum set from back then.

Anything I know about guitar has just rubbed off from hanging around dudes like you over the years. It’s also fun to live in a town like Nashville, where very nice guitars frequently show up at silent auctions for very good causes. It’s a lot easier to justify when the money goes somewhere awesome. Unfortunately, as of late, playing music is one of the things I alluded to that is falling through the cracks that I have to make peace with. I love it when I’m able to get out the sticks, but those times have been few and far between lately. sl

An American entrepreneur brings a British Classic back to life.

Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis in the 1950s for the British Motor Company (BMC), the original Mini Moke, the site of which conjures images of the breezy beach party era à la Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, was originally intended for use by the British army as a parachute-droppable vehicle. Too-low ground clearance and an underpowered engine made the classic Moke unfit for military service. However, when BMC pivoted to public sales in the 1960s, the quirky car quickly gained popularity among the civilian sector, despite a laundry list of shortcomings that included a propensity to rust quickly.

After BMC ceased Moke production in 1968, the brand persisted in Australia, where it was built from 1966 to 1981 and known first as the Morris Mini Moke and then the Leyland Moke. Between 1980 and 1984, 8,500 "Californian" Mokes were built at British Leyland's subsidiary in Portugal. The final iteration of the original Mini Moke was produced by Italian motorcycle manufacturer Cagiva.

From 1990-1993 Cagiva’s build of 1,500 Mokes is a small fraction of the more than 50,000 that were manufactured between 1965-1993.

Entrepreneur Todd Rome, the founder of Blue Star Jets, first fell in love with the curious Mini Moke while vacationing on the tiny Caribbean paradise of St. Barts. After selling Blue Star Jets, he founded Moke America in 2016 and set about reengineering the 20th-century icon into a 21st-century E-car. To tackle the ground clearance issue, Rome's Moke sits on 14-inch wheels. The glass windshield has been redesigned to be larger and sit higher to accommodate taller drivers better. A refinement of the painting process for the steel and fiberglass chassis better fends off rust. There's also a four-wheel drivetrain, hydraulic steering, front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, a parking brake, a Bluetooth sound system, and a backup camera. For the ultimate ease of use, the car can be fully charged in eight hours (providing 40 miles of range) by plugging it into any standard household 110 outlet.

Street legal and completely customizable from roof-to-rims, each Moke is made at the company's plant in Sarasota, Florida, and takes approximately 90 days from order placement to delivery. While the Moke's cool factor is undeniably off the charts, you won't be breaking any land speed records as it has a top speed of just 25 MPH, which drops to around 15 MPH on steep grades.

At present, Moke America is producing a 007 San Monique edition that pays homage to the classic Moke James Bond drove in LIVE AND LET DIE during his visit to the fictional Caribbean island of San Monique.

Historically associated with France’s Burgundy region – most notably, the Côte d’Or, or “Golden Slope” – the pinot noir grape has had an ancient and varied evolution in the wine world. The six acres planted by the Zellerbachs in 1953, later part of the lauded Hanzell Winery in Sonoma, are considered to be the oldest plot in the United States with seminal plantings in Oregon and in the Finger Lakes happening shortly thereafter. But pinot was slow to catch on with American consumers, who initially favored cabernets and zinfandels, until a movie called “Sideways” re-established the grape in the minds of many. In the years since, California and Oregon have seen an explosion of pinot noir both in terms of acreage and brands. But where else does pinot thrive?

For lovers of this grape, a grape known for being finicky to grow and transcendent to taste, getting off the established pinot path is a great way to fully experience its many expressions. Pinot noir thrives in more marginal climates, and most particularly needs a strong diurnal shift to ripen while preserving trademark acidity.

Warm days need to be offset by cool nights, and threats like mold, hail, frost, under-ripening versus burned skins, etc., all combine to make pinot noir farmers nervous. But when the microclimate is right, pinot noir can be epic.

Below are five bottles of pinot noir from places you might not expect. Each is made in small-lots, by hand and by winemakers who favor minimal intervention. Each of these speaks of its place, its “terroir,” with unique aromas and textures that are still 46 slmag.net

unmistakably pinot. From Austria to New Zealand to the UK to Chile to South Africa, these pinots are worth seeking out: Global warming is a key factor impacting many winegrowing regions; for Austria, typically a bastion of white grapes like riesling and grüner veltliner, it means that the potential to produce reds like pinot noir is expanding dramatically. As the vitis vinifera ripening band moves inexorably northward, places like Austria’s Thermenregion are making unexpectedly spectacular pinots. A favorite producer is Johanneshof Reinisch, where a trio of brothers are making waves just thirty minutes south of Vienna. With vines that are over twenty years old planted on limestone soils, the Reinisch pinots have beautiful, herbaceous notes of cedar with cherry and anise.

Master Sommelier Laura Rhys is the Global Ambassador for Gusbourne Wines, located at the estate in Kent which dates to the year 1410. Her mission in tandem with winemaker Charlie Holland is to convince the world that English “fizz” and the pinot noir that often goes into it can be world-class. While much of their proprietary pinot is made into Champenoise-inspired bubbles, their still pinot noir is well worth ferreting out if you can find it.

The Legado reserva bottling from producer De Martino is an example of why sommeliers try wines blind – you’d never guess this amazing pinot is from a mostly unknown region in Chile and that it only costs about $20. It’s that good.

With winemaker Marcelo Retamal recently named international Winemaker of the Year, the cat is out of the proverbial bag.

Concentrated notes of red fruits and purple violets with a hint of forest combine in a medium-weight pinot noir that way overdelivers for the price and then some.

While the bulk of NZ’s exports are still fairly inexpensive grocery store whites, winemaker and Master of Wine Steve Smith has tirelessly championed quality over quantity. Steve pioneered Craggy Range, one of New Zealand’s most successful wineries, before partnering with investor and friend Brian Sheth in 2017 to launch Pyramid Valley. Farmed biodynamically, the

wines from their two estate vineyards in North Canterbury and further south in Central Otago are impeccably pure expressions of just how great Kiwi wines can be. The 2018 pinot noir from Otago, widely considered to be one of the premium sites for the grape across the globe, is exceptionally silky with aromatic notes of lush cranberry spice, orange peel and juniper, and is also entirely vegan.

Wine importer TRUWINES is looking to change that as founder Jesse Balsimo’s mission is to bring small-lot, family-farmed wines from South Africa to the States. While chenin blanc and pinotage South Africa’s homegrown favorite - remain the most widely planted white and red grapes, the pinot noirs coming out of cooler climate parcels continue to impress. Oak Grove’s location in Elgin, a smaller subdivision of the Western Cape of South Africa, features south-facing slopes at nearly 1500 feet above sea-level, and its wines are remarkable. The 2018 Groenlandberg pinot noir is an homage to the Green Mountains that tower above.

The enduring appeal of America's First Resort Destination Written by Bridget Williams

The last time I visited The Palm Beaches in Southeast Florida, I was excited to attend a cabaret show at The Colony Hotel in the Town of Palm Beach. While the show, a bastion of a bygone era, lived up to my expectations, it was clear from the sea of silver topping the heads of my fellow showgoers in the hotel's celebrated Royal Room that my affinity for the genre was an anomaly for my age.

When we headed up to bed that evening humming tunes from the Great American Songbook, I couldn't help but notice that the nearly 75-year-old hotel was certainly showing its age. The former raucous realm of the 'Rat Pack' crowd felt more "Sleepytime Down South," à la The Greenbrier.

My how things have changed.

In town for a long weekend to take in the Palm Beach International Boat Show (pbboatshow.com), The Colony once again served as our home base. Perfectly positioned to have a flipflop on the sand and a well-heeled toe on Worth Avenue, New York investment banker Andrew Wetenhall and his wife Sarah bought the 89-room property in 2016. They immediately set about transforming it into their vision of a family-friendly boutique luxury resort that nods to its legacy without leaning on it too heavily. A similar hint of nostalgia pervades The Palm Beaches during its current renaissance, due in part to affluent East Coasters, who, rather than WFH in the doldrums of winter, have decamped to a warmer and sunnier shore.

At The Colony (rooms from $275/thecolonypalmbeach. com), a newly refreshed Living Room, designed in collaboration between Kemble Interiors and the venerable French firm de Gournay, is quintessentially Palm Beach and the most recent phase of a complete hotel restoration. Playfully popping up throughout the bespoke, hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper, the design of which is based on a mid-century mural that adorned the lobby when the hotel opened in 1947, is Johnny Brown, the hotel's mascot. The cheeky spider monkey pays homage to the island's most famous primate of the same name that was a fixture on the shoulder of famed architect Addison Mizner throughout the 1920s. titled 'The Early Days in Palm Beach,'" said Sarah Wetenhall.

"We worked hand-in-hand with de Gournay to create this unique 'love letter' to The Colony and Palm Beach." With a host of small, inviting vignettes, each with head-turning furniture and accessories, the Living Room feels more like a private home than a lobby, a notion further supported by the steady stream of guests that choose to linger in the chic space.

The Colony also recently unveiled 'AERIN Villa Jasmine,' a 2,100-square-foot guest villa that dates to 1929 and reimagined by Aerin Lauder using pieces from both her eponymous collection and woven rattan furniture by British brand Soane.

If the Living Room is The Colony's heart, then Swifty's is its pulse. Launched this past December, the indoor/outdoor restaurant is a "pop-up" of a Manhattan institution beloved for decades until it closed in 2016. A hub of activity throughout the day, during dinner, the scene is the place to be seen, with the "who's who" of the area packed around the pool and under the tented hanging gardens. "Everyone is here," I heard one smartly dressed gentleman remark as he surveyed the room before sashaying into the crowd. Don't miss the crushed avocado appetizer, accompanied by addictive tortilla chips drizzled avocado honey and sprinkled with sea salt.

cute-as-a-button, but the beach setup provided to guests is even more so with pink-and-white striped beach chairs, fringed umbrella, a bubblegum pink Yetti cooler.

History buffs will want to check out the nearby Henry Morrison Flagler Museum (flaglermuseum.us). Completed in 1902, this 75-room, 100,000-square-foot mansion truly embodies the opulence of the Gilded Age. For a more active pursuit, book a bike or walking tour with local Leslie Diver of Island Living Tours (561.309.5790), who provides a history behind the hedges experience, during which she imparts her palpable enthusiasm for the Town of Palm Beach's unique architecture.

The Kennedys were among the area's most famous guests, and their enduring appeal is evidenced by a photo of a ski-masked Jackie in the window of many Worth Avenue boutiques reminding people to "mask up." The 35th President's "Winter White House" grabbed headlines when it sold in 2020 for $70 million. A lesserknown Kennedy connection lies across the water from the estate on Peanut Island in nearby Riviera Beach. Visit Palm Beach (visitpalmbeach.com) leads both kayak and boat tours of the eightyacre island near the Lake Worth inlet, which is also the site of a bunker built for President Kennedy.

and proactive wellness principles, the centerpiece of the two-tower development is a four-story, 100,000 square-foot cutting-edge spa with a plant-centric restaurant. The property is part of a hotel building boom that includes the recently opened 32-room White Elephant Palm Beach, and a trio of properties scheduled to open in late 2021 and early 2022: The Ray in Delray Beach, the Mandarin Oriental in Boca Raton, and Banyan Cay Resort & Golf in West Palm Beach.

During our visit, we checked out several newly opened restaurants. At Elisabetta's Ristorante (elisabettas.com) in downtown West Palm Beach, crowds packed the multi-tiered patio overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. The all-scratch kitchen includes a trio of pizza ovens imported from Italy, turning out pies that made this pizza lover very happy. Complementing the extensive menu is a 400-bottle wine list (with 70 wines available by the glass) and classic Italian cocktails.

I loved the airy barrel-vaulted dining room at Lionfish Delray (lionfishdelray.com) on Atlantic Avenue. At this outpost of a San Diego sustainable hotspot (twice recognized as a James Beard Foundation Smart Catch Leader), the sea-to-table cuisine's quality mirrors the clever interior design. The restaurant's namesake is available to order in a multitude of ways, and we opted for a citrusinfused ceviche, as well as a deliciously spiced and perfectly grilled octopus. An inventive cocktail program includes house-made syrups and infusions.

A few blocks away is Avalon Steak & Seafood (avalondelray. com), a concept from New York's veteran hospitality operators Host Restaurants. Sitting streetside on an elevated terrace bordered by a glass partition, we were rapt observing the dinner theatre in the restaurant as well as the constant parade of people from all walks of life making their way up and down the avenue. Their selection of premium wet- and dry-aged steaks are the centerpiece of the menu, and they arrive at the table with a perfectly seared crust. I particularly enjoyed the "Angry" lobster, enlivened by fermented house sriracha and ginger, and served with Pullman toast so as not to waste a drop of the delectable sauce.

Decidedly more casual yet no less delicious is Lucky Shuck in Jupiter (luckyshuckjupiter.com), which opened this past February.

market that allows commercial fishers to directly sell their catch of the day to both Lucky Shuck and BEACON, which is the development's fine dining option. The Ahi tuna poke tacos were a highlight from Lucky Shuck's unique menu, a mashup of Southern and Far East influences. Evidently, we aren't the only ones who enjoy the tiny tacos as the restaurant serves as many as 4k each week. After a thoroughly enjoyable alfresco lunch, we conquered the 109-steps of the Jupiter Lighthouse (jupterlighthouse.org).

Even with everything new and notable in The Palm Beaches, it's nice to know that some things remain the same. For me, no visit to the Town of Palm Beach is complete without a stroll through the exquisitely maintained botanical gardens at the Society of the Four Arts (fourarts.org). Founded in 1936, the 10-acre campus is home to hundreds of events each year. The mélange of visitors at any given time is a testament to the enduring appeal of "America's First Resort Destination." Chiseled like a supermodel's cheekbones, the head-turning architecture of the 2022 Audi e-tron GT and RS e-Tron GT looks every bit like a concept car brought to reality. "The most beautiful car I have ever drawn," said Marc Lichte, Head of Audi Design, who chose these words in the fall of 2018, when the brand presented the Audi e-tron GT concept at a show car in Los Angeles.

The Audi RS e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT are the first EVs from Audi Sport to be sold in the United States. They represent the third and fourth all-electric additions to Audi's US portfolio and contribute toward its goal of achieving a 30% electrified model portfolio by 2025. "The Audi RS e-tron GT is a milestone in the development of electrified high-performance models," said Lucas di Grassi, Formula E driver and entrepreneur, at the world premiere of the vehicle this past February.

The e-tron's enviable aesthetics have all arisen from attention to efficiencies. A lightweight, high-strength, five-layer carbon fiber reinforced plastic roof —a first for an Audi vehicle and a segmentexclusive feature—comes standard. shares with the world's most thrilling roller coasters. Found in both the front and rear axles of the e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT, permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) produce 235 horsepower at its front motor and 429 horsepower at its rear. A net combined output of 469 horsepower (up to 522 horsepower for 2.5 seconds with overboost launch control) allows the e-tron GT to repeatedly accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to a top track speed of 152 mph. In the RS, a more robust rear motor enables a net 590 horsepower and up to 637 with overboost, which shaves .8 seconds off of the 0-60 mph sprint. These acceleration figures place the RS e-tron GT on par with the V10-powered Audi R8 supercar. Standard in the RS model is the e-tron sport sound, a high-quality and progressive sound that the driver can activate and modulate its amplitude via the Audi drive select system.

Audi drive select, the driving dynamics system with four modes and controlled damping, comes as standard in every e-tron GT. Standard three-chamber air suspension in the Audi e-tron GT enables a wide variation in spring rates to provide cushioned comfort for daily driving or a more reflexive tightness for track workouts. A

standard rear differential lock with fixed locking values assists during various thrust and traction scenarios. "As a fully electric gran turismo, the e-tron GT reinterprets this balancing act by not reducing performance to the sheer output but by attributing a special creative importance to efficiency as well," said Lichte.

Thanks to its lightning-fast control operations, the electric all-wheel drive provides the e-tron GT with maximum dynamism, stability, and traction in any driving situation. When the driver releases the right-hand pedal, the gran turismo usually switches to coasting mode. While braking, the electric motors perform decelerations alone in the vast majority of all everyday driving situations.

All Audi e-tron GT models in the US boast a 93.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a unique integrated cooling structure underneath the battery pack. The 800-volt electrical architecture comes standard with the ability to charge at an industry-benchmark 270 kW using DC fast-chargers, allowing the battery to replenish from 5-80% in just 22.5 minutes, which is among the quickest charging rates currently available of any EV. An e-tron route planner calculates the charging stops such that the

driver reaches their destination as quickly as possible. Preliminary manufacturer's estimated ranges based on approximation of EPA test cycles for a full charge are 238 miles for the e-tron GT and 232 miles for the RS e-tron GT. Inside, the cabin is spacious and outfitted with recycled materials like Alcantara and Dinamica automotive suede in lieu of leather as standard (although Nappa leather is available). The instrument panel is based on Audi's "monoposto" design that angles the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit and 10.1-inch MMI touch response displays toward the driver. An Alacanara-wrapped full-circumference and flat-bottom steering wheel is standard, with capacitive hands-on detection available. The rear luggage compartment has a volume of 14.3 cubic feet, with another 2.9 cubic-feet available beneath the hood. Ziad Nakad

By the time he was a teenager, Lebanese-born Ziad Nakad knew that he wanted to work in fashion. Fascinated by eccentric fabrics, intricate beading and the mystery of sheer embroideries, he incorporated these into early designs he sketched for family members. With the encouragement of his family, Nakad pursued formal education in dressmaking while apprenticing with masters of couture, and in 1997 his dreams took flight when he was invited to show in the Beirut International Fashion Show. Nakad's dreamy couture confections, cut to flatter and embellished to perfection, quickly garnered global attention, and women around the world can now sport his sophisticated styles.

For his SS21 collection, Nakad sought refuge from news of the explosion in Beirut, from the pandemic, and from the inability to travel by crafting a collection ripe with color and symbolism.

He calls the pieces "slightly frivolous" in an attempt to recall the carefree life pre-COVID. A contemporary womenswear brand founded by Kanyinsola Onalaja following her graduation from Istituto Marangoni in 2014, the label aims to bridge the gap between Kanyinsola's Nigerian heritage and f lair for artisan crafts with Italian design aesthetics against the formality of British fashion. Recognized early as a person to watch in the industry, in 2009, she was named the FDA Young Designer of the Year.

An underlying concept within all Onalaja collections always remains "Our Heritage Re-Imagined – The Africa We Don't See." The use of traditional fabrics such as Aso-oke fabric (from the indigenous Yoruba Tribe), the Tinko hand embroidery technique from the Hausa Tribe of Northern Nigeria, and other traditional basket weaving techniques play a key role within each of her collections and are juxtaposed with modern techniques and materials. Farhad Re

During the darkest hours of the COVID lockdown in Europe, Paris-based designer Farhad Re holed up in his atelier to transform no less than 500 yards of milky-colored silk organza into a 15 piece collection that revisits the myth of Pygmalion, the eternal story of an artist who falls in love with his creation. Trained as an architect at the University of Rome, Farhad applies a sculptural approach to his couture creations. He works almost exclusively with silk organza, a material he favors for its ability to be sculpted while still maintaining an ethereal feeling.

For his SS21 collection, Farhad concentrated on creating a light and architectural silhouette.

The bespoke pieces boast hand-formed geometric shapes and represent his notions of purity of renewal and freedom. The epic of American Art tells the story of a young nation developing its own legacy and writing its own story. Artists are looking to their European roots while also looking towards their very bright future. In a New Light: American Impressionism 18701940: Works from the Bank of America Collection tells that story through the lens of one of the most significant art movements and its influences through its legacies. The exhibition takes a broad look at American painting around the turn of the century.

Displaying the works of artists such as Sanford Gifford, George Inness, Childe Hassam, and George Sloan, the exhibition tracks the progression of American painting from the Hudson River School through the dawn of American Modernism. The title “In a New Light” is twofold as it cleverly refers to the Impressionists’ method of capturing light on the canvas, as well as looking at Impressionism in a different, more holistic way. It may seem

premature to discuss American Impressionism in 1870 when Claude Monet’s game changing Impression Sunrise (1872) was not presented to the public until 1874, but to understand what the American Impressionists in particular, referring to their influences is paramount.

As the visitors begin their journey through decades of American art at Cheekwood, the first two galleries consist of most works created before 1900. These galleries are full of commanding paintings of the virginal American landscape. The Hudson River School, often referred to as the Luminist Movement, was America’s first sweeping consciousness of its landscape. There is always an otherworldly aspect to these paintings, as the Luminists saw capturing these vast landscapes as a religious experience. They believed the closest way to get to God was to appreciate nature.

Before this, American portraiture had dominated the field.

One of the first works that the visitor encounters within this exhibit is Thomas Moran’s View of Fairmount Waterworks, Philadelphia (c. 1860-1870). In the foreground, Moran depicts nature in an uncivilized or uncultivated state. There are rough, tactile surfaces that are enhanced through vibrant chiaroscuro effects. Though the landscape looks untouched and almost primordial, the inclusion of figures and a dirt road indicate the arrival of civilization. In the background, Moran painted the booming city of Philadelphia. In this portrayal with the city in the background and an intact landscape in the foreground, Moran highlights the nascent American landscape—one full of hope, opportunity, and freedom.

As the visitor continues through the galleries, paintings by Arthur Wesley Dow, George Inness, and Sidney J. Yard show more of how the European artists, specifically those associated with the Barbizon School, influenced the progression of American art. This style is often referred to as the naturalist style. The Naturalists remained in the landscape, but instead of making sketches in the field and completing the works in their studios, the artists painted en plein air. These artists set to appreciate landscape painting in its own right. Most artists who formed part of the school approached painting naturally, capturing the things they saw truthfully, making careful observations, and painting directly from nature to reproduce the countryside’s colors and forms faithfully. While the Luminists painted in the highly academic style of painting, the Naturalists used a freer style with looser brushstrokes.

The third gallery in the exhibition gives way to American Impressionists Childe Hassam, Lilla Cabot Perry, Colin Campbell Cooper, and Edward Potthast. It takes marveling at the Hudson River School and the Naturalists to appreciate the works in this gallery. The Naturalists trialed a variety of techniques that gave way to the Impressionist style. These techniques included layering wet paint over wet paint, completing a canvas in a single sitting, and, as continued with the Luminists, this concentration of light’s effects on the landscape. Ernest Lawson’s Connecticut Trout Stream (c. 1920) is one of the later works in this gallery but is an excellent representation of American Impressionism. Lawson occupies two significant positions in American art. Lawson was an important Impressionist whose style was directly influenced by Camille Pissarro in France and by his American teachers, John Henry Twachtman and J. Alden Weir.

He was also a member of “The Eight,” a group of pioneer urban realists including Robert Henri, John Sloan, and William Glackens.

Lawson managed to achieve this double identity by being among the first American Impressionists to apply his skills to portray the bridges, docks, and buildings of New York City. There is also a more pastoral side to Lawson’s art, which is gleaned from his many trips to the New York suburbs, Northern England, and, as seen here, Connecticut. In the two previous galleries, the artist’s hand is almost eliminated in the painting’s exactness. In this gallery, the styles vary greatly from painting to painting, from work to work. In this gallery, the viewer also begins to see the changing American landscape with more cities, buildings, and people.

The final three galleries in the exhibition focus on the aftermath of Impressionism. There are works by realist artists who rejected Impressionism’s techniques and painted what they thought to be a more accurate, detailed, and unembellished depiction of contemporary life. There are galleries filled with works by later artists seeking to integrate the Impressionistic style with those derived from realism. The final paintings return to this Impressionistic painting style with the Philadelphia Impressionists, such as Edward Willis Redfield, Daniel Garber, and Robert Spencer.

from around the same time. Several artists are represented in both presentations, including Hassam, Perry, Inness, Alexander H. Wyant, Charles Warren Eaton, and Arthur Clifton Goodwin, and their contemporaries, Theodore Robinson, John White Alexander, and William Merritt Chase.

These exhibitions highlight the strength of American art at the turn of the century. MODERN FAMILY Jenni Lackey amps up an Oak Hill home with fresh spaces Written by Shawn Haile / Photos by Suzy Thompson The park-like setting that this Oak Hill home sits on was definitely the inspiration for interior designer Jenni Lackey of J. Lackey Interiors.

Having worked with the homeowners previously, she was brought in for a new addition that would include adding square footage across the back of the house, expansive windows looking out at the beautiful backyard, and a newly created outdoor entertaining space.

“I knew I wanted the outdoors to feel organically tied to the indoor finishes.” Staying grounded with textures, a lot of natural fibers & a neutral palette would be the complement to its lush surroundings.

Flanked in a wall of windows and skylights, the addition to the back of the home included a family room, breakfast room, and butler’s area that have proven to bring so much light to the

existing home. The complete kitchen renovation proved to be the piece marrying the new to the old of the house. “I made sure to weave some age into the design, like a patina-looking tile that was used as the backsplash and vintage sconces in the new butler’s area,” said Lackey.

The outdoor addition, which included a new pool house, a swimming pool, and outdoor living space, was all done in Tennessee flagstone and limestone. The pool house consists of a small kitchen, loft for sleeping, and a quaint living area, such a great retreat during this past year of Covid. Lackey concluded, “Looking at the completed project, it’s hard to tell which parts are new or original to the home, and that was our goal.”

DESIGN DETAILS (p. 73-75) During the renovation, the kitchen was reworked and expanded so it now opens into an intimate dining area. The large Ralph Lauren brass pendants over the island are the show-stoppers. A den featuring matching sofas and bar area were also added. These rooms are linked by custom-made iron ceiling fixtures that suspend from the skylights and create a warm glow in the evening. (p. 76-77) When designing the home’s interiors, principal designer Jenni Lackey took into consideration that this family home with three teenage boys and several furry pets needed to be organic, masculine and durable.

She married vintage textures with new, sleeker finishes to achieve this look. The cozy sitting room invites you in as soon as you open the front door. With four green velvet swivel chairs, a round upholstered ottoman and fireplace, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee or have a family chat. The “dancing bears” fountain celebrates the couple’s love for rock music. The hot tub is the perfect spot to unwind after a long day.

The pool cabana complements the main residence with its neutral color palette, splashes of color and wrought iron finishes. The same floor tile and white lime-washed ceilings are used throughout for visual continuity.

The spa-like bathroom finishes were kept fresh and clean with a floating marble countertop as the focal point. A fully-stocked kitchen makes outdoor living easier with drinks and snacks at the ready. This room also houses a loft area for naps or overnight guests.

On the 25th Floor is lou|na—the Grand Hyatt’s rooftop bar with terraces offering a glorious 360-degree view of Nashville.

The name refers to both the Louisville and Nashville railroad, as well as “luna”—the Latin word for moon. Melissa and I watched the sunset and the city’s glow at night as it slowly came to life.

It is something that everyone must experience! From the craft cocktail menu, Melissa ordered the Pink (Louna)cy, a delightful concoction of Grey Goose vodka, elderflower, aloe, pineapple, strawberry, and lime served in a collins glass with a LED ice cube.

I had the Moonchaser made with Wheatley vodka, lime, lavender, tiki bitters, and kombucha float (I figured the kombucha made it healthy, right?). I enjoyed the chilled Rappahannock oysters from the small plate menu, which were fresh but had that “of the sea” essence. Melissa snacked on the pork meatballs with a sriracha sorghum glaze wrapped in lettuce leaves.

After cocktails, we moved to the First Floor to dine at The Nashville Grange. The Nashville Grange serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in an open concept space. The restaurant offers a Tennessee-to-table menu that focuses on dishes with Southern

flavors with a contemporary spin. Chef Daniel Salomon has been creating outstanding menus for luxury hotels for over 20 years and hails from Casablanca, Morocco, where he grew up working in his family’s pastry shop.

We began our meal with 24/Month Ham from the Baggett Family Farm. The dish consisted of southern “prosciutto” (thinly sliced Tennessee country ham), relish mustard, and grilled country bread. For the main course, Melissa ordered the Shrimp and Grits—Chef Salomon’s take on this low country favorite included Shelton farm grits, Kenny’s Farmhouse cheddar lardons, and cayenne molasses. I opted for the Atlantic Halibut served with field peas and vinegary mustard greens. It was exceptional. We also enjoyed the charred carrots, which seem to grace many local menus lately. To wrap up our culinary evening adventure, Melissa and I treated ourselves to the Black Forest dessert with devil’s food cake, Amarena cherries, Chantilly cream, chocolate cremeux, and cocoa nib (I hope my dietitian doesn’t read this!).

One of the dining options we are looking forward to soon is the reopening of The Continental, a fine dining concept by James Beard Award-winning chef Sean Brock. According to Chef Brock, “The idea is to truly embrace and be inspired by the original great American hotel restaurants, to invigorate the spirit of those historic dishes. This will be a place for diners to share a satisfying and leisurely meal together, host a power lunch, or partake in celebration. The restaurant will embody the idea of a celebratory attitude towards eating out, no matter the occasion.”

We think the Grand Hyatt Nashville is a welcome addition to the Nashville hotel and restaurant scene. It offers first-class luxury experiences, particularly when it comes to fine dining, spirits, and spectacular views. We will be along for the ride again and again. sl slmag.net 93

Roman’s family secretly helped Ellie translate her vows into Josi’s native language of German, and Ellie said it was such a special surprise for Swiss-born Roman—when he realized she was speaking German at the altar “the look on his face was priceless! Then walking down the aisle in front of all our friends and family, as a married couple was the best feeling”, recalled Ellie.

Spectacular white and green flowers from Branching Out were everywhere, complemented by glowing lanterns and candles.

Nashvillians showed up during a torrential downpour and braved flash-flood warnings to pick up their “six packs” of fabulous wines and charcuterie platters at City Winery to participate in the virtual wine tastings and wine auction.

Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research recently held its Crew Aviation/Rally on the Runway, this year, presented virtually. The event featured Rally Kids, children who are fighting or have fought cancer, as models in spring fashions from Dillard’s. Rally Kids were escorted by Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons football players, led by Titans Safety and Honorary Chair Kevin Byard and former UGA and Atlanta Falcons quarterback and Honorary Chair D.J. Shockley. The event raised more than $638,000 through 15 fundraising teams across the country, a live auction, a silent auction, and donations the night of the event! (March 26)

CHEEKWOOD’S 1929 CLUB TAKE A STROLL

Cheekwood honored its 1929 Club donors and The Cheekwood Campaign’s most generous supporters with a “Stroll Through the Gardens”. The 1929 Club was established initially to generate support for the historic 1930s refurnishing of the Cheekwood Mansion. The 1929 Club now provides essential funding for the endowment of the Mansion and its seven historic acres to ensure its long-term care and maintenance. GOOD PUPPY!

Since 1997, renowned American artist Jeff Koons’ 43-foottall sculpture Puppy has loyally stood guard in front of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in northern Spain. The computerdesigned West Highland white terrier is carpeted with flowering plants, referencing the formal European gardens of the 18th-century and pop culture imagery like Chia Pets. Koons created the piece to inspire optimism and to instill, in his own words, “confidence and security.”

Puppy is in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim, and, like clockwork, twice a year, in May and October, all of the nearly 40,000 plants that make up the sculpture’s exterior are replaced with colorful fresh seasonal varieties, including pansies 104 slmag.net

for the fall and winter, and begonias, impatiens, and petunias for the spring and summer.

Despite its whimsical exterior, inside, Puppy is an engineering marvel. Anchored to a concrete base, a colossal stainless-steel frame is covered by layers of turf, wire mesh, and geotextile fabric. The structure also contains a network of five levels of scaffolding and pipes that water and feed the plants every 24 hours.

The museum recently undertook this task, which requires a staff of 20 people and 9 days to complete on scaffolds, and freshened up Puppy’s coat for the summer with new flowers in hues of pink, white, and red. This time the Puppy even wears a very appropriate protective mask! sl
