WYMARA RESORTS & VILLAS A Luxury Waterfront Resort Along the Iconic Grace Bay Beach in Turks & Caicos Written by Alexandra Rhett

At the curve of the semi-circle drive, the finely dressed staff warmly welcomed us at the front entrance of Wymara Resorts & Villas, perfectly arranged on the iconic Grace Bay Beach in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos. As soon as the taxi door swung open, a calming sound of a gorgeously installed water-feature instantly transported us to paradise. From there, a short walk to the Check-In Desk was met by sweeping views of the property’s pristinely manicured pool deck as well as a beautiful, teasing glimpse of the turquoise sea. Awaiting our arrival was chilled cocktails and warm cleansing toilettes on a modern, acrylic tray to help transition our day from travel to relaxation. Shortly after, we were escorted to our oceanfront suite, fully-outfitted with a stocked kitchen, living room, dining room, oceanfront deck, master bedroom and bathroom, and full laundry- accommodations excellent for a quick weekend trip or a summer month’s getaway. slmag.net

The bags were dropped and lunch was calling. While the property is located near plenty of wonderful local fares, Wymara offers two signature kitchens on the property, Stelle and Zest. We wandered down to a seat at the bar of Zest, Wymara’s beachfront dining option and enjoyed a freshly muddled Mojito, accompanied with the Southern Caicos Fish Tacos served with queso fresco, citrus slaw and sour cream. Perfection. While we could have stayed cozied up to the bar, which was outfitted with TVs, the sound of breakings waves and unmatched service, we traded in our bar seats for a spot underneath the canvas umbrellas, beachside. Once at the end of the boardwalk that led to Wymara’s private beach, we were kindly greeted by a beach attendant who led us to our pair of lounge chairs and umbrella. He so delicately laid down two freshly pressed towels and made a comfortable towel-pillow for ultimate relaxation. A bucket of ice with water bottles and a bottle of beautiful French Rosé were placed on the 16 slmag.net

side table next to us. After spending the day there, before we knew it, the sun began to set and we made a quick turnaround for dinner at Stelle, located at the front portion of the property. Stelle houses an indoor/outdoor dining experience adorned with a wooden pergola over the outdoor seating area, white and green plush accents and a wrap around bar for alternative seating. What turned into a personal favorite, the Char Grilled Swordfish served with crisp potato cakes, salsa verde, shaved radish, roasted cherry tomatoes and a grilled lime and balsamic mayonnaise was equal parts simple, yet full of rich flavor profiles. Led by Executive Chef Joel Vallar, Stelle is inspired by Southeast Asia with a modern, new perspective and added Caribbean cuisine flare. After not a bite left on our plates, General Manager Rolf Lippuner brought over espresso martinis adorned with fresh espresso beans and a drizzle of chocolate syrup- the perfect nightcap to the perfect day.

The next morning, we ventured to tour Wymara’s collection of luxury villas- perfect for travelers wishing to boast an exclusive private retreat getaway. The villas are undoubtedly one of the Caribbean’s finest private accommodations, hosting four to five bedrooms, an infinity pool, state of the art appliances and breathtaking views that words cannot begin to describe. Including all amenities of the main resort, the luxury villas are an excellent option for those traveling with family, friends, or simply want to go off the grid for a moment or two. “This new era of Wymara Resort & Villas presents an exciting time to expand our footprint and continue to bring travelers an unmatched vacation experience as well as an elevated level of hospitality and service,” states Bruce Maclaren, one of the owners and developers of Wymara Turks + Caicos Resort and Villas. “What originally started as a smart investment, quickly turned into a passion project for me, and I have considerable plans for the next phase of Wymara Villas.” After exploring every nook and cranny of the villas and being in consistent awe, it was time to head back to the main resort and continue the remainder of our stay exploring around the property, discovering new little surprises along the way, including an

afternoon dedicated to the spa. A 60-minute deep tissue massage was accompanied by English Breakfast tea, all while being in the softest bathrobe ever endured. This particular afternoon brought some rain, so it was a perfect activity until the island shower passed and it was time to get back into the pool. While we had dined the lunch menu for Zest, we wanted to experience what the dinner menu had to offer. Tonight called for Mahi-Mahi in jerk sauce, Wild Salmon Fillet in miso sauce and a side of Brussel Sprouts so perfectly crispy, we had to order another. It is hard to fully captivate into words the unmatched service and experience we had during our stay at Wymara. While many travelers are promised 5-star service, rarely does a property meet that standard, nevertheless, exceed it. From the top-notch Food and Beverage programs on property, to the level of care each team member took to our every need, to the carefully thought out finishes to the guest rooms, to the dramatic elevation of the private villas, Wymara is undoubtedly leading the way for luxury stays in the Caribbean. sl For more information on booking your stay at Wymara Resort & Villas, visit wymararesortandvillas.com

PICTURE PERFECT PENTHOUSE Trace Ventures Finds Success at the Top

Written by Gloria Houghland / Photographed by Michael Robinson Success can be likened to a “high-rise building:” start in the basement and work your way up to the Penthouse. Trace Ventures, a diversified Nashville-based firm, specializing in high quality design build construction and remodeling in both residential and commercial arenas, is a premier example of that reference. Literally, the perfect example. In 1991, Art and Martha Stinson started their small company with a focus on upscale residential design-build remodeling. Mostly through word of mouth, the company grew and, in 2015, the Stinson’s sold the company to Clearbrook Holdings, which provides crucial business resources to the rapidly growing firm. Without losing focus of their core business, Trace expanded their offerings to include hand picked commercial projects, including the new Glen Campbell Museum slated to open in January, 2020. Mark Holliday, President of Trace Ventures and a 32-year building trade veteran, moved to Nashville 14 years ago from Cleveland, Ohio, recognizing the potential in Music City, not to 22 slmag.net

mention its favorable weather conditions. Holliday’s prior history of growing a company from six employees to more than 100, pegged him as highly desirable, and Trace Ventures scooped him up in a flash. Through the years, Holliday has built his team at Trace Ventures into one of the more sought after design build firms in Middle Tennessee. As needs arose, Holliday found the most qualified person to fill each niche. Trace Ventures now employs 15 specialists with an in-house interior designer expected to join the company in early 2020. So, what is the secret to the success of Trace Ventures? According to Holliday, the founding principles of craftsmanship combined with exceptional service continue to be the bedrock of the organization. “Our process is simple but significant. The client is always kept in the loop financially, so they can determine whether to increase or decrease their costs at every step in real time. This approach makes us unique and sets us apart from other builders.”

slmag.net

23

In 2016, Holliday, whose expertise is sales, approached Trace Ventures’ majority partner, Mike Shmerling (often considered one of Nashville’s most prominent entrepreneurs) seeking an introduction to high stakes real estate developer Tony Giarratana, the pioneer of Nashville’s luxury downtown living. Holliday had long been aware of the mark Giarratana was making in the community and wanted to participate in select areas of the forthcoming 505, a 45-story mixed-use skyscraper. Holliday hoped Trace Ventures might be included in certain custom buildouts, but Giarratana had other plans. He did, however, keep Trace Ventures in mind for an even more prestigious project – his very own Penthouse Suite. “This was huge—-our premier project in all these years,” Holliday confided. “We had never worked in a high-rise, much less a penthouse, but Giarratana had confidence in us. I admit, I was nervous. I didn’t want to screw up!” Holliday then turned to his most recent hire, Charlie Gingrass, who had relocated to Nashville from Milwaukee, where he had operated his own construction company for 17 years. Holliday’s initial thought

24 slmag.net

was to hire Gingrass as a highly skilled sales person to help him grow the company. When The Penthouse project presented itself, though, Holliday knew just where to turn. He surprised Gingrass by temporarily re-assigning him as Lead Project Manager for the Penthouse, knowing he would be well supported from Rick Dismukes, Trace’s well-respected Production Manager, and Mike Fly, one of Trace’s estimators with commercial experience. “It was the riskiest, and best decision I ever made,” Holliday noted. Giarratana originally planned for the 4400-square-foot Penthouse, the largest of the four, to be a model for his next project, a planned luxury residential tower 20 stories taller than the 505. It was imperative that it be first-class. Holliday and Gingrass got in touch with their best vendors and went to work transforming the Penthouse into the firm’s calling card for future contracts. No expense was spared in creating a showroom, so to speak, for the most advanced concepts in technology from automated touchpads, heated floors, hidden functioning systems, full surround sound and innovative lighting systems. Everything was top-of-the-line.

25

26 slmag.net

27

28 slmag.net

Giarratana hired Chicago-based, interior designer, Frank Ponterio, who worked closely with the team at Trace Ventures. Together, they transformed a blank space with translucent quartzite for kitchen countertops, high-gloss Italian eucalyptus kitchen cabinets, Sub-zero and Miele appliances, imported steel accents, heated hardwood and tile flooring, metal bookcases, Tony’s c. 1400 dining room table (505’s wine room boasts a copy) and the ebony grand piano, his wife, Lisa’s prized instrument. “Ponterio specified one piece of carved limestone for the guest bathroom shower, which was de riguer, of course, but natural stone has to be transported on its edge or it breaks. Because it wouldn’t fit in the service elevator, we cut it into three pieces. The craftsmanship is so precise, you can’t even tell,” said Gingrass. The co-ordination of a high-rise project is a tremendous task and when it is the highest Penthouse in the city that makes the job even more arduous. “During the first half of the project, the 505 was still being built,” Gingrass explained. The elevator was installed, but the balcony had not been built. Hand lifts had to be used to deliver the highly specialized hardwood floors, as well as a 750-pound safe and the soaking tub in the master bath to the 2nd floor mezzanine. As in every project, the client decides to make changes. Giarratana was no exception. In the original plan, the living areas and kitchen were separated by a one foot ceiling differential. He

decided he wanted them all on the same level. This involved raised the HVAC ductwork and unobtrusive slot grillwork in the ceiling. He also decided to remove a wall and install glass panels to the balcony so the view would be unobstructed. “We worked together as partners. I earned his respect and he encouraged me to speak my mind. We dealt with the various details to modify the design elements and make them work,” Gingrass said Giarratana was so delighted with the Penthouse project that he decided to keep it as his personal residence, and he partnered with Trace Ventures on the two of the remaining three Penthouse condos. One has already sold, one is for sale and one in design, but Trace is proud to have been dubbed the contractor of choice for the 505. “I am thrilled,” said Holliday. “This is the ultimate feather in our cap. But, more importantly, the relationship with our client has blossomed. Tony Giarrantana is a pleasure to work with. He respects and values each and every employee at every level. When the Penthouse was complete, he hosted a party for each person involved in the project. That’s the kind of guy he is. He is loyal and he wants you to be successful. You solve problems that way, and you all become winners.” Tony Giarratana seems to feel exactly the same way about Trace Ventures. Is it any wonder that Trace has soared into the stratosphere, that elite level in the sky where Penthouses are perched? sl slmag.net

LAURELS FOR HARDY

How Joseph Hardy's quest to find the ultimate fishing hole led to the establishment of the award-winning Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands. Written by Elliott Greene The story of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is an "only in America" yarn that weaves through the rich tapestry of Joseph Hardy's life and encompasses family, tenacity, ingenuity, and conviviality. The resort is a property that defies categorization and truly offers something for everyone. Do you prefer châteauinspired, Tudor-style, or Arts and Craft architecture? It's all here. Do you prefer a multi-course fine-dining experience with expertly paired wine, or slurping a malt in a 50s-era soda shop? Here, you can have both. And, whether you are an adrenaline junkie who also dabbles in painting, or someone who enjoys spa pampering and cutting-edge holistic treatments geared at nudging back the hands of time, this is the place for you. The land where Nemacolin sits is bisected by southwest Pennsylvania's Historic National Road Corridor, part of the nation's first multi-state, federally funded highway that began as a pathway developed by the Delaware Indians. For American history buffs, the area is a cornucopia of significant sites.

Starting in the early 1900s, the Laurel Highlands became "the place" to build a country retreat among Pittsburg-area elites, including industrialist Willard F. Rockwell. His initial 60-acre purchase grew into the Nemacolin Trail Hunting Game Reserve, a private game reserve named for Delaware Indian Chief Nemacolin. When the property came up for auction in 1987, Joseph A. Hardy, III, founder of the 84 Lumber Company, attended intending to purchase a few acres near a lake or stream for his daughter Maggie, who loved to fish. After buying 550-acres, he and Maggie (who assumed the reigns at 84 Lumber in 1992 and became president and owner of Nemacolin in 2002), have since worked tirelessly to transform the property into a 2,000-acre world-class destination resort. "The Hardy family's strong ties to this place make us stronger as an organization," said Tom Smith, Director of Resort Culture. Staff at all levels speak affectionately of Maggie, who, along with her father, keeps a home on the property. During our visit, we heard numerous tales of Maggie's under-the-radar generosity.

A sculpture celebrating the resort's namesake, Chief Nemacolin of the Delaware Indian tribe.

Nemacolin offers five distinct lodging options, totaling 323 rooms. At the top is Falling Rock, a 42-room boutique property that has the distinction of being the only Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond hotel in Pennsylvania. Opened in 2004, the design of the hotel, which overlooks the Mystic Rock golf course, pays homage to legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright's famous Fallingwater residence is a scenic 20-minute drive away, and guests have access to a fleet of BMWs for day trips. Falling Rock's distinctive triangle-shaped balconies provide an ideal vantage point to observe the magical morning mist as it tickles the treetops of the surrounding hillsides. Dedicated butler service and a bath soak menu at Falling Rock makes it easy to take advantage of the room's 200-gallon soaking tub (ideally while enjoying the nightly delivery of milk and cookies). "One of the things that makes this place so special is the personal relationships our repeat guests have with the butlers," said Kory Young, Director of Lodging. Cutting a fine figure at the crest of a hill just past the entry gates, the 124-room Château Lafayette draws heavy inspiration from the Ritz Paris. Whereas Falling Rock is imbued with jewel tones and earthy aspects, the spacious guestrooms in Château Lafayette boast gleaming marble bathrooms, vaulted ceilings (20feet in the first-floor suites!), and opulent crystal chandeliers. Prominently positioned in front of the Château's portecochère is Fatbird, a chubby, cherubic grouse sculpture that Maggie commissioned wildlife artist Barney Bollerhat to create. As the resort's official logo and mascot, the sculpture is a fitting introduction to the varied multi-million-dollar collection of art in all mediums on display inside and out. Daily art tours explore the collection, which encompasses everything from priceless Tiffany lamps to a graffitied chunk of the Berlin Wall. Art-on34 slmag.net

wheels is found in the Woodlands Auto Toy Store, home to a host of collector cars from the early 1900s onward, and in The Pride and Joy Airplane Hanger, whose most notable resident is a 1931 Pitcarin PA-8 once owned by Steve McQueen. Comfortable lodging without amenities makes for a great place to stop but not to stay, and the more than 15 dining options and 70 year-round activities make Nemacolin a pleasant place to linger. "We have everything but the ocean," said Smith. It would take a novelette to adequately outline everything the resort has to offer, so for brevity's sake, I've chosen to spotlight specific aspects of our recent visit. Dinner at Lautrec is a masterpiece of gastronomic theatre. Located in Château' Lafayette, it is one of only 30 restaurants in the world to hold the Forbes Five Star and AAA Five-Diamond awards simultaneously. The wood-paneled space itself is quite dramatic, outfitted with boldly patterned carpet, large scale Moulin Rouge artwork, and tables oriented around a central wine cellar. At the helm in the kitchen is Executive Chef Kristin Butterworth, an early pioneer of hyper-local dining. Upon arrival, guests receive a large red envelope with a wax seal. Inside is an invitation from Chef Butterworth to try the "Leap of Faith" experience, in which diners select ten ingredients from an illustrated list for their seven-course meal (with or without expert wine pairings). Adventurous eaters can circle the question mark and let the chef decide the menu. For the not-sobold, a seasonal prix fixe menu is also available. A champagne and caviar cart inaugurates the experience. Even the oft-humble bread service is elevated, thanks to butter imported from France, local honey, and Sicilian olive oil (the truffle scones are exemplary). At the conclusion of our dining odyssey, we were given a chef-signed copy of the ingredients list as a souvenir.

Other standout dining options include classic steakhouse fare at Rockwell's in The Lodge and Aqueous in Falling Rock, where chef Erling Berner's menu is informed by what's fresh and local. Across all dining options, there is a conscious effort to highlight the indigenous foods of the Allegheny Mountains. The Pete Dye-designed Mystic Rock and Shepherd's Rock golf courses present 36 holes of championship golf that are supported by a state-of-the-art Golf Academy. Affable pro Eric Johnson, a Golf Magazine's "Top 100 Teacher" since 2011, is equally patient with beginners as he is with more experienced players. Be sure to ask him for a demonstration of his impressive golf trick shots! An off-road driving academy, zip lines, rock climbing wall, tennis, skiing, paintball, tubing, and snowshoeing are a few of the activities that fall under the umbrella of the Adventure Center and Sundial Lodge. The 140-acre Field Club boasts 35 stations and two five-stand sporting clay pavilions, along with an Orvis Fly Fishing Center with half- and full-day guided trips. Treatments offered as part of the 40-room Woodlands Spa reflect the property's eclectic personality. The space itself is quite beautiful, including the expansive exercise room, which boasts

a fireplace and a massive Calder-style mobile suspended from the vaulted ceiling. My Dream Catcher massage fused Native American therapies with the ancient Hawaiian ritual of Lomi Lomi for 105-minutes of bliss. Taking rejuvenation to the next level is the Holistic Healing Center. Located next to Falling Rock, it allows guests to craft a personalized treatment plan to address issues ranging from circulation to cellulite. "We are constantly on the lookout for new high-tech equipment to supplement traditional healing modalities," said Katlyn Hatcher, Director of Spa and Wellness. At 96, Mr. Hardy visits the center twice a week for treatments and remains a driving force in investigating sustained paths to wellness. Personalized packages bundle therapies such as cryotherapy, acupuncture, float therapy, NovoThor PBM therapy, and chakra healing to manage individualized concerns. Nemacolin builds on a tradition of hospitality and rejuvenation in the Lauren Highlands that spans generations. "There's something for everyone, but the experiences are uniquely different and tailored," said Young. Rates at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort begin at $207/night. JAZZED UP IN MONTRÉAL Written by Caylee Keto

Under the swirling lights of the main stage of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal this past June, concertgoers waved their hands in the air as bodies ebbed and flowed to the beat of music so loud you could feel the reverberations in your bones (montrealjazzfest.com). Surveying the scene, where the carefree enthusiasm of the singing crowd rivaled the volume of the performers, make me realized that so much joy in one place is hard to find these days. Montréal seems to be the exception. The city is like an infectious smile; once it takes hold, you can't help but soak it up. Home to the world's largest jazz festival, Montréal is a city whose passions run deep, as evidenced by a chockfull annual events calendar that boasts a festival for everyone. Whether you fancy fine food, fireworks, fashion, film, fitness, or Formula 1, 40 slmag.net

Montréal has you covered with unique celebrations dedicated to these interests and many, many more. Even in the dead of winter, the party continues with events like Igloofest (igloofest. ca), which has ski suit-clad revelers dancing under the stars to internationally famed DJs. In a city of superlatives, the dining scene is aptly elevated, with a delectable restaurant to match every global cuisine you could imagine. Many chefs in Montréal have studied for years all over the world to earn prestigious titles. One of these is Executive Chef Riccardo Bertolino of Maison Boulud at the Ritz-Carlton, who apprenticed under three-Michelin-star Chef Daniel Boulud. Maison Boulud (maisonboulud.com/Montreal) is known for its implementation of Quebecois ingredients, including indulgent black truffles.

Opened in 1912, and commanding an entire city block, the Ritz-Carlton Montréal has the distinction of being the first hotel in North America to fly the Ritz-Carlton flag (rooms from $700/night; ritzcarlton.com/Montreal). The property's history includes a long list of VIP guests and extraordinary events. Alexander Graham Bell placed the world's first "long-distance" phone call here at a banquet in 1916. In 1964, Elizabeth Taylor wed Richard Burton in the Royal Suite. Today the hotel boasts a one-of-a-kind Dom Perignon bar, the first in Canada. With sparkling chandeliers to match the bubbles in delicate flutes, it is, without a doubt, an extraordinary experience. Foodies could easily plan a long weekend around dining experiences in distinct, walkable neighborhoods. My favorite way to start the day, or really at any time of day since it's open 24/7, is

picking up a fresh and hot bagel from St. Viateur (stviateurbagel. com) at their original landmark location. Another must-see is the Jean-Talon Market. Opened in 1933 in the city's Little Italy neighborhood, the market is the largest open-air market in North America (it's open year-round seven days a week). Strolling the cobblestones of Saint-Paul Street, you'll encounter art galleries, designer boutiques, and a host of charming restaurants. Don't miss Maison Pepin, a concept boutique setup like a stylish apartment (thepepinshop.com), and Galerie LeRoyer, a bastion of contemporary art by emerging Canadian and international artists (galerieleroyer.com). Located in a 300-year-old building, Maison Christian Faure is regarded to be the pinnacle of pastry arts in Montréal (maisonchristianfaure.ca/en/).

The neighborhood surrounding hugely popular Mount Royal Park, which marks the city's highest point, includes colorful houses, and one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. Many facades of the buildings that line Saint-Laurent Boulevard, home to the renowned Schwartz's Deli, are jazzed up with giant artworks created as part of the MURAL Festival (muralfestival.com). In the winter, you'll likely become very familiar with RÉSO, Montréal's underground network that provides access to more than 1,700 shops, restaurants, and several major hotels. This subterranean city started with the construction of the Place Ville-Marie office tower in 1962. Designed by I.M, Pei and Henry N. Cobb, the building offers the city's highest observatory. Booking a private yoga session is a highly personal way to experience the space. Nearby, housed in a circa 1845 building that was most recently a sprawling furniture store, is Monarque, a fine-dining destination that opened in 2018 to instant acclaim (restaurantmonarque.ca/en/). Located in Victoria Square, the W Montreal's Bartizen is an intimate space conceived by Michael Isted to focus on Quebec gins and various tonics. I sampled from the "Gin and Tonic and Perfume" menu. flavor profiles based on the gin's aromatics. A plentiful charcuterie board laden with Quebec-smoked meats accompanied our libations. Hiding behind a buttoned-up former bank façade, the W Montréal's public and private spaces sport lux contemporary furnishings geared for global jet setters. Standouts among the 152 guest rooms are the WOW and EWOW suites with outdoor terraces (rooms from $158/night; Marriott.com). A hidden gem in Montréal's business district is Japanese restaurant Jatoba (jatobamontreal.com). Complementing the appealing aesthetic, complete with a plethora of plants bathed in natural light and sleek black seating, is a menu devised by star chef Olivier Vigneault. Also worth seeking out is the up-and-coming area of Griffintown, which is buzzing with a vibrant art scene and global cuisine along the Rue Notre-Dame Quest. Unique experiences abound in Montréal, and chances are a friendly local will be happy to cue you in on where to find the best espresso (Café Balance), the best poutine (too many opinions to list), or the chicest cafe (the Crew Cafe). Even if you're apt to adhere to an itinerary, you'd be wise to heed any insider intel, as we did, which opened our eyes to exceptional experiences just beyond the well-trodden tourist stops. sl slmag.net

OPENING THE DOOR TO THE DBX Aston Martin introduced the world to its first SUV this past November with events in Beijing and Los Angeles Written by Andre James / Photos courtesy of Aston Martin Following an extensive research and development process that commenced in 2015, Aston Martin roared into the realm of SUVs, a segment previously unexplored by the 106-year-old luxury auto manufacturer. The main launch event for DBX took place in Beijing, China, with a secondary reveal staged during the Los Angeles Auto Show. "I can't emphasize enough how incredibly exciting and significant DBX is for Aston Martin," said Dr. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda's President & Group CEO, at the Beijing launch. "Through its development alone, this beautiful SUV has already taken the company into new territories and in inspiring directions. We have both delivered this model through our expertise, but also by garnering invaluable experience and knowledge from external counsel, including our Female Advisory Board. This is a real landmark for this great British brand, and I promise that DBX will reward all who experience it in their everyday lives."

44 slmag.net

A bespoke chassis allowed Aston Martin's design team to tailor the vehicle size and proportions to suit the specific aims of DBX. A long wheelbase permits optimization of interior space while keeping a distinctively sleek, low roofline. Designers devoted more than six months to defining the position of the driver within the vehicle. The result is a cabin with superior visibility that gives the driver relaxed confidence backed by dynamic performance. "We've successfully managed to achieve a package with the proportions and mechanical layout that allows sports car styling to be applied to a versatile, five-seat vehicle in a beautiful way," said Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's Chief Creative Officer. Noteworthy is the involvement of a Female Advisory Board and numerous customer clinics, both of which the company says were crucial in the design and placement of each screen, button, and dial. As a result, Aston Martin says that the DBX can accommodate the world's 99th percentile male and 5th percentile female. One of the most distinguishing architectural features of

the interior is a bridged center console that is ample enough for stashing a handbag or large water bottle. The extent to which Aston Martin/s design team exhausted every possible passenger scenario is evidenced by their work with a panel of children at the company's design studio. These efforts, as well as DBX's full-length panoramic glass roof and expansive side windows, create a sense of space and lightness with encapsulating views for up to five passengers and their gear. Adaptive triple volume air suspension, combined with the latest 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC), and electronic adaptive dampers provide the new SUV with a vast range of benefits while on the move as well as during loading and unloading. The eARC can limit DBX's body roll for handling that is much more akin to that of a sports car than an SUV. With a sound that is unquestionably Aston Martin, powering DBX is a new version of the 4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine found in both the DB11 and Vantage. Boasting cylinder

deactivation to enhance fuel economy, the turbocharged V8 is capable of propelling DBX from 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 181mph. Transmitting this power and torque to the ground is a nine-speed automatic gearbox mated to an allwheel-drive system with active differentials. As expected for an SUV of this caliber, a host of available packages are available for tailoring DBX to customers' needs, sports or pastimes. For instance, the amenities as part of the pet package include a portable washer, and the snow package delivers boot warmers. Top-tier customization is available as part of the 'Q by Aston Martin' program. Scheduled to be built in Aston Martin's purpose-built manufacturing facility in St Athan, Wales, the MSRP for DBX is $189,900. The first 500 owners of this landmark model will benefit from an exclusive '1913 Package' that includes a unique fender badge, sill plaques, and an inspection plaque detailing its limited run. sl

BOTTLED HISTORY Tohu is a contemporary wine label owned by descendants of New Zealand's original Māori landowners. Written by Bridget Williams "New Zealand promises to be favorable to the vine," prophesized English missionary Samuel Marsden in a diary entry. His 1819 plantings in the Bay of Islands are the first recorded in New Zealand. While goats quickly destroyed everything in Marsden's unfenced vineyard, the wine industry in the country has since flourished, with more than 700 wineries annually exporting goods valued in excess of $1.8 billion. Although grapes have been cultivated in New Zealand for 200 years, it wasn't until 1998 when Tohu Wines, the first indigenousbranded wine label, was founded. Wakatū Corporation, Tohu's parent company, has approximately 4,000 shareholders who are all descendants of the original 254 Māori landowners of the Nelson, Marlborough, Tasman Bay, and Golden Bay regions. "Our vision in founding a wine company was to have a platform to share our culture, story, and values with the world," said Wakatū chairman Paul Morgan. The Māori, who made their way to New Zealand from eastern Polynesia via waka (canoes) more than 680 years ago, comprise approximately 15% of New Zealand's present population. After losing much of their land through European colonization, a Māori renaissance in the 1970s, saw Māori people coming together to regain their tribal lands, language, art, and culture. Contributing to these efforts, every bottle of Tohu wine bears a logo based on the koru pattern, a distinctive representation of the unfurling frond of a silver fern. According to legend, Māori hunters and warriors used the silver underside of fern leaves to catch the moonlight and illuminate a path home through the forests. Producing 220,000 cases annually from entry-level to premium offerings, Tohu is now an internationally recognized and award46 slmag.net

winning wine label under chief winemaker Bruce Taylor. The label has been growing its own grapes since 2002. Both of its vineyards— Whenua Awa in Marlborough's Awatere Valley and Whenua Matua in Upper Moutere, Nelson—are certified by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, a management system that promotes environmentally responsible practices. "In making our wine, we are committed to upholding our deeply held values, which include rangatiratanga, manaakitanga and hihiritanga–excellence, kindness, and innovation," said Rachel Taulelei, CEO of Kono, the beverage arm of Wakatū Corporation. Taulelei, the first direct Māori descendant to hold the title, added, "We have a strong spiritual connection with the land and a responsibility to pass it on in good health to future generations." Sixty percent of the nearly 300-acres that comprise Tohu vineyards are planted with native vegetation to promote biodiversity and enhance the overall ecosystem. Tohu's Whenua Single Vineyard wines represent distinct expressions of the terroir. Whenua Awa is a high-altitude site that enjoys a cooler and drier climate than other parts of Marlborough, which is New Zealand's most famous wine region. As a result, this vineyard has a longer growing season, which allows the grapes to ripen more slowly. The loess soil and mineral-rich papas clay of Whenua Awa creates intense, fruit-forward, and complex pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, and riesling. Situated on sundrenched slopes with clay soils, the unique vineyard blocks that comprise Whenua Matua produce pinot noir, chardonnay, and albariño with outstanding structure and varietal characteristics. "Over the last 20 years, we have created internationally acclaimed wines that encapsulate a place and time, and reflect the unique characteristics of our vineyards," explained Taulelei. sl

FIT TO BE TRIED

Denver's HALCYON, a hotel in Cherry Creek, makes it easy to stay active. Written by Bridget Williams Denver is endowed with an average of 300 sunny days annually, and HALCYON, a hotel in the chic Cherry Creek neighborhood, wants to make sure you soak up every ray. From morning-tillnight the "kitchen counter" in the hotel's lobby, which doubles as the reception desk, serves up complimentary drinks and snacks, so you can fuel up with an espresso or wind down with a glass of wine. Their unique Gear Garage is a toybox for adults, stocked with everything from bicycles, Kota longboards, Go-Pro cameras, Leica film cameras, a Piaggio scooter, and backpacks, to a selection of LPs to listen to on in-room record players. Comfortable common areas and guestrooms serve as a continuation of the hospitality extended at the kitchen counter. 48 slmag.net

The overall experience is akin to staying at the home of an uberhip friend, albeit one that is adept at creating chic spaces with a palpable mid-century vibe. More than 700 pieces of art created by Colorado artists add to the distinct sense of place. Full of the quirky personality afforded by an independent boutique property, a cheeky welcome mat at the entrance to each room elicits a smile. Each of the 154 guestrooms are identified by a brass room number plaque affixed to a leather satchel suspended from a brass rod, a design element that pays homage to the building's former life as a post office. Beverage stations near the elevator offer on-demand sparkling, still and hot water.

Serving snacks and refreshments throughout the day, HALCYON's Kitchen Counter is the heart of the hotel.

HALCYON makes a concerted effort to ingratiate itself within the neighborhood. The lobby's living room is the site of "modern-day Tupperware parties," where local businesses, hotel guests, and residents gather for cocktails and networking. The rooftop pool (one of very few in Denver) is popular year-round, even in winter, when guests pack cabanas to sip hot chocolate and wrap in warm towels as part of "Robes on the Rooftop" events. Rooftop barre and yoga classes turn into social shindigs with après glasses of wine. In January and February, HALCYON will be hosting a TruFusion Fitness Series led by local fitness experts. For a boutique property, HALCYON has a bustling and burgeoning food and beverage scene, led by Quality Italian, an outpost of the notable New York City Italian-American steakhouse. The vibe is lively, the portions are generous, the steaks are top-notch, and the service is intuitive. Elevated Rooftop Bar serves up jaw-dropping views of the Rocky Mountains, along with craft beers, clever cocktails, and wines by the bottle and the glass. When you're lounging poolside, be sure to try a glass of APAULO, a non-alcoholic malt energy drink brewed just for HALCYON by Declaration Brewing, Denver's first certified green brewery. Scoring the dog tag that signifies you're a member of B&GC, HALCYON's "secret" underground cocktail club is a badge of honor. Hotel guests can request timed access to the 26-seat hotspot, with directions and a password sent via text just before your scheduled reservation. B&GC bartender Albion Bundey teaches the tricks of the trade behind two unique cocktails as part of a monthly Cocktail Club.

Colorado is consistently ranked among the healthiest states in the nation, and HALCYON does its part to inspire guests to stay active during their stay. Their Wellness Passport is a unique program that provides one complimentary class each day at either barre3, Corepower Yoga, Rise Nation, SoulCycle, or Tru Fit Athletic Club—all located within the Cherry Creek neighborhood. "Halcyon strives to keep its guests in line with their daily routine, but also to inspire them to experience an activity that they wouldn't normally participate in," said Candace Duran, HALCYON's Director of Sales and Marketing. Reserve a bike from HALCYON's Gear Garage and head out to explore the shops and restaurants along the well-trafficked Cherry Creek Trail, or the nearby Denver Botanic Gardens and the Denver Art Museum. The hotel also serves as an ideal home base for day trips to Red Rocks Park, the Mount Evans Scenic Byway, and Rocky Mountain National Park. If you are feeling adventurous, make plans to hike the 6.8mile out-and-back trail to the summit of Mount Bierstadt, the closest 14'er to Denver. Be sure to start at sunrise to beat the thunderstorms that often plague the peak in the afternoon. Coming down the mountain following our summit this past summer, during which I was beset by altitude sickness, my thoughts were consumed by the sanctuary awaiting me in the cloudlike bed in my room at HALCYON! Rooms at HALCYON start at $299/night. The hotel is currently offering a "Make An Impression" package that provides VIP access to the Claude Monet exhibition at the Denver Art Museum – use promo code MONET. Hotel Eden Introduces Andrea Ferolla as Artist-In-Residence Written by Victoria Chase / Photography ©Kai Elmer Sotto / Illustrations ©Andrea Ferolla The iconic Hotel Eden, located in the heart of Rome, just a short stroll from the Spanish Steps and the Villa Borghese, recently announced that fashion illustrator Andrea Ferolla is the property's first-ever Artistin-Residence. Ferolla's illustrations, featuring characters that inhabit an imaginary world made of allusive women, contemporary dandies, and animals with distinctive personalities, are regularly exhibited at the London Fashion Illustration Gallery and published in Italian and international fashion magazines. In addition to his role as a professor at the IED European Institute of Design, Ferolla and his wife Daria Reina founded a communication studio that focuses on luxury brands, as well as Chez Dédé, a chic atelier-showroom in Rome. In 2018, Assouline published Italian Chic, which takes readers on a journey through Italy via Reina's photos and Ferolla's illustrations. A perfect pairing for a property that has frequently welcomed royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities since it opened in 1889, Hotel 56 slmag.net

Eden will become a bi-monthly studio for Ferolla, where he will observe the daily dance of activity and then distill the experiences onto paper. The resulting illustrations will provide a visual history of the hotel and its cast of characters in near real-time. Guests may spy Ferolla capturing the grace of the doorman in the lobby, the orchestrated serving rituals at La Libreria, the impeccable uniforms of the waiters at the rooftop of Il Giardino Bar, or Chef Fabio Ciervo at work in the panoramic kitchen. "Every place has its own 'genius loci,' its protective spirit, a combination of material and immaterial things which can convey its character and uniqueness, the feeling and atmosphere of the place, its history, and its values," explained Ferolla. “Through my illustrations, I hope to capture the unique gestures and figures which bring the hotel to life.” sl

LA ELECTRIFIED The 2019 edition of the Los Angeles Los Auto Show had a distinct focus on electric vehicles Written by Andre James

When the Los Angeles Auto Show debuted in 1907, Detroit’s Marvel Motor Company was advertising its Roadster, a two-seater runabout with 14 horsepower, as “a car of superior merit.” A century later, a 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant on display at the 2019 show packed a jawdropping 591 horsepower under the hood—a superior swag wagon. Manufacturers from around the world increasingly use the LA Auto show to showcase their latest and greatest models. The show has also evolved to meet changing times, and now includes AutoMobility, the industry’s first trade show to combine technology and automotive sectors through new product launches, award programs, and panel discussions focused on pressing issues related to transportation and mobility. The 2019 event, which took place from November 18 through December 1, made a concerted effort to increase 58 slmag.net

awareness around electric vehicles (EV) and EV-ownership. The cumulative goal was to help consumers make informed decisions around alt-fuel options. Nearly forty-percent of debut vehicles—including models from Audi, Ford, Karma Automotive, MINI Porsche, and Volkswagen—were hybrid or electric. Several manufacturers, including Jaguar, offered EV test drive opportunities, and other marques, such as Mercedes-Benz, displayed electric-powered models among their lineups. “With Los Angeles being the top EV and overall car-buying market in the U.S., our show is an ideal platform for automotive brands and EV | LA partners to educate and inspire consumers about EVs and EV-ownership,” said Terri Toennies, President of the LA Auto Show and AutoMobility LA. sl

SET IN STONE

Whether you are looking to amplify your energy or amp up your accessories game, our roundup of birthstones has you covered. Compiled by Bridget Williams The ancient origins of birthstones, as described in the Book of Exodus, are widely linked to the twelve stones in the prophet Aaron’s ceremonial breastplate. The stones are said to symbolize the 12 tribes of Israel, and later, the 12 signs of the zodiac. Birthstone traditions in Eastern culture include the ancient Tibetan Mythical Birthstone List, and the Indian Ayurvedic Birthstone List, which dates to 1500 BC. Over time, associating a particular stone with each month evolved to suit secular accessorizing and commercialization. What is considered to be the definitive chart of astrological birthstones was adopted by members of the National Association of Jewelers (now the Jewelers of America), in 1912. Today, the list continues to expand, with the American Gem Trade Association adding Tanzanite as an additional December birthstone in 2002, and Jewelers of America listing spinel as another August option in 2016. When a particular month has more than one gemstone listed, birthstone purists should opt for the “ancient option. In use for thousands of years, ancient stones are believed to possess healing powers. Further superstitions surrounding where the stone is worn are said to affect its impacts.

Gold Skin Care Center

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS AT THE FOREFRONT OF MEDICAL AND COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY IN NASHVILLE By Medical Director, Dr. Michael Gold Nashville is this amazing, vibrant, growing city and those of us who have been here for a long period of time are thrilled to see what has happened to our once quiet and small “town.” One thing that we have never had a shortage of is amazing health care. Health care is one of the main reasons that Nashville has blossomed into the city that it is today. And that boom in health care extends to the services that we provide for the people who reside here, and are interested in cosmetic procedures. Especially what we call the non-invasive or minimally invasive aesthetic procedures. Dr. Michael Gold is someone who has been working in this field for the past 30 years, and it has been incredible to see what he has accomplished and all that they have available for patients and clients. Gold Skin Care Center has been at the forefront of this growth, not only here in Nashville, but across the country and around the world. Dr. Michael Gold has been involved in clinical research endeavors, which have helped introduce lasers and other energy based platforms to treat a variety of skin concerns. He has been involved in research, which has given us toxins and fillers for the treatment of wrinkles. He works with companies on developing new skin care products to enhance one’s cosmetic appearance. Dr. Gold travels all over the globe giving lectures and seminars on what he has learned here in Music City. All of these treatments are available at Gold Skin Care Center, with Dr. Gold and his amazing staff. As the Nashville leaders in skin care and all non-invasive or minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, Dr. Gold and his staff continue to innovate and customize the treatment offerings based on one’s individual needs. Where as many use one or two lasers in their practice, Dr. Gold has approximately 60 medical devices all designed to have an amazing, positive impact on one’s skin. They will never make a laser fit the condition confronted with, instead, they will use whichever is most appropriate to treat the skin concern you have. Again, Dr. Gold is at the forefront of many of these devices and you can be assured that each and every treatment concern will be addressed in a program to fit your own concern. In this article, we will highlight several of the newer additions to the Gold Skin Care Center’s laser offerings. If any of these sound enticing, then make an appointment and see if you are a candidate for any of them. The Sciton Halo is a fractional laser system to treat a wide variety of concerns, including wrinkles and sun damage, pigment concerns,

and when used in combination with skin care and an intense pulsed light device which is called broad band light or BBL in this device, can do wonders to your skin. The Halo uses two wavelengths of light delivered together to perform what we call non-ablative fractional resurfacing along with a superficial erbium laser ablative resurfacing to remove the top layers of the skin. The downtime with this procedure is minimal and the results amazing. When we combine this with BBL, we see even more improvements in the reds and browns on the skin. This is a must treatment for those with aging concerns. The Solta Thermage is not a new device for skin tightening, but a more perfected device for skin tightening. Dr. Gold and his team have been pioneering some of the newest features of Thermage. It has been transformed from a procedure which, was very uncomfortable, to a procedure with minimal discomfort. It provides patients outstanding skin tightening results in just one visit. They can treat the face, neck, abdomen, back, and flanks safely and effectively. Fat reduction is a very popular procedure and Dr. Gold and his team have several offerings for you to remove unwanted fat. CoolSculpting has continued to be a popular method for fat reduction using cold therapy. And now SculptSure, by Cynosure, uses laser energy to remove unwanted fat in a most productive method. When you combine SculptSure with a skin tightening device called TempSure, the results can be amazing. And finally, we want to mention again the Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL or BBL. Dr. Gold was one of the first doctors in the world to have this technology – over 25 years ago and he has worked with almost every laser company to improve and make these devices amongst the most popular of laser and light treatments all over the world. IPLs treat red and brown spots and can, over time, strengthen and enhance the collagen and elastic tissues of the skin. IPLs are synonymous with the term photorejuvenation, and Dr. Gold and his team are the leaders in IPL therapies in this region. So, as you can see, there are many new things to explore at Gold Skin Care Center. The therapies offered in the laser and light world have multiplied and have become much safer with the skilled providers at Gold Skin Care Center. Please do not trust your skin, your face, to anyone – trust that at Dr. Gold’s office, you will have a dedicated and superbly talented group of providers who will individualize a treatment plan for you and deliver the care and expertise that has exemplified Dr. Gold and Gold Skin Care Center for over 30 years here in Middle Tennessee. sl 2000 Richard Jones Road, Suit 220 Nashville, TN 37215 615.383.2400

TECHNOLOGY & THE DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP By Scott Rouse

If you’re one of the many who have experienced the technological glitch in the patient-doctor connection, you’ll find this interesting. We talked about Matching the last time. It’s one of the five keys I focus on when speaking to doctors about creating a lasting and loyal bond with patients. This time, let’s talk about the initial meeting with a patient. Keep in mind these body language keys work in any business and any relationship. That’s great news, because more and more studies are showing they are sorely needed right now in healthcare to help make the patient experience better. A study was done at Harvard called The Instantaneous Impressions Study. It showed when seeing someone for the first time, your brain begins comparing them to everyone you have ever met, seen, or come in contact with. And very quickly you decide if you’re going to like them or not. This doesn’t happen consciously, for the most part it happens subconsciously. It works like this: You may look similar to the person who helped the person seeing you for the first time change a tire on the side of the road when they needed help. If so, they will feel favorable toward you. Again, not consciously, but subconsciously. If you have the bad luck of slightly resembling the person who hit on their girlfriend or boyfriend in college, they will most likely feel uncomfortable or unfavorable about you. This is where, if you’re a man, your “gut feeling” will kick in and you’ll get the idea something isn’t right with this person. If you are a woman what kicks in for you? What kicks in is arguably the most powerful force known to man...a woman’s intuition. I’m not trying to be funny. It’s true. Studies show women can spot something wrong with a person or situation much faster than men. This is where your “Resting Face” comes into play. What’s your “Resting Face”? It’s that face you’re probably making right now when you’re not talking to someone and you think no one is looking at you. You’re relaxed, thinking about something good, bad, fun, interesting, and there is no need to use your facial expressions to help transmit your feelings at the moment. Most likely it’s a slight frown or maybe even an angry expression or appearance. You don’t feel that way, but you may look as though you do.

68 slmag.net

If you’re in a coffee shop, at the water fountain, walking through the parking lot to your office, whatever the situation may be, someone may be watching you. And if they are? Their brain is comparing you to every person they’ve ever met or seen and will be making decisions about what kind of person you are. Needless to say, when you’re out in the wild, whether you’re alone or not, you must be constantly aware of the facial expressions you are transmitting. Always be aware of your “Resting Face”. To ensure your patient feels confident with you and is happy to see you, there is a specific facial expression I would suggest. Smiling is the correct expression of course and we all know that. However, there’s a specific smile that will win the attention of, and the reciprocal smile from, anyone who sees it. Quickly smiling a huge smile when walking into the exam room would resemble the insincere smile you see on the host or hostess when letting them know how many are in your party at Applebee’s, and on the salesperson’s face at a used car lot. The smile you want is what I call “The Tiny Slow Smile”. A tiny smile is on your face as you enter the room and as you make eye contact with the patient it slowly grows to that big smile your close friends and loved ones see. It takes about 2½ seconds to execute. Why does it have to start small and blow up slow? Because the patient will watch you, without blinking, until the expression is complete. Their subconscious will be taking in all of that information. And the more smile it sees and watches grow bigger and bigger, the more it continuously reassures them that you are okay. As well, when you smile, they will smile back. At this point you can begin making decisions about how they are feeling by the size and type of smile they return. You’re probably going to see a smile combined with worried nervousness and some anxiety. They’ve been in the waiting room thinking about what is wrong or what might be wrong. They may be thinking: “Do I have diabetes?” or “Is this cancer?” or “Is my cancer back?” Next time, we’ll go over the key to helping calm them and firing off some oxytocin to solidify the bonding process.. sl Is there anything specific you’d like to ask me or would like me to cover next time? What if you and I could have coffee and you could ask me anything you wanted? What would you ask me? Let me know at ScottRouse@ScottRouse.com. THE WEDDING OF LUCIE FRANCES CALDERON AND PRANAV REDDY SANTAPURAM Schermerhorn Symphony Center + June 15th, 2019 Written by Genevieve Moore / Photographed by Glenai Gilbert Lucie Frances Calderon and Pranav Reddy Santapuram first met in undergrad at Vanderbilt University in the fall of 2011, as partners in a biology lab class. After long hours in and out of the lab, study sessions evolved into movie nights and comedy shows into dinner dates. After graduation, Lucie moved to New Orleans for medical school, and Pranav stayed at Vanderbilt. The couple began their long-distance chapter for an additional five years before joyfully getting married back in the city where they met-- Nashville. Though neither Pranav nor Lucie are from Nashville, the city became a home base for them for the nine years of their relationship, and it was important that it be somewhere that was significant to them both. The Schermerhorn stood out to them as an iconic piece of Nashville, with its magnificent architecture, soaring pillars, and stunning views of the skyline, and, conveniently, it was large enough to hold the number of people they wanted so that they could host the traditional Indian wedding that Pranav’s parents envisioned. 82 slmag.net

When planning the wedding, there were a few ‘must haves’ the couple worked with their planner Dawn, Owner of Premier WED, to execute. “The first and most important thing for us was to be able to honor both our religions and cultures in our celebration. That meant that we needed a venue that would accommodate a holy fire, a mandap, and proximity to a Catholic church- which narrows things down quite a bit!” exclaims Lucie. “Father Fye orchestrated a thoughtful preparation for us throughout our engagement, and Pranav’s parents walked me and my family through the importance and beauty of their Hindu traditions.” Secondly, incorporating the outdoors was a must. The couple loves the life and vibrancy of outdoor weddings, but they knew that it would not be possible in the unpredictable Nashville summer weather. “When I learned that the Schermerhorn had an outdoor space, I thought it would be perfect to use for a small part of our special day, until I realized we had far too many people

to fit into a courtyard. Dawn, however, came up with the brilliant plan to bring the outside indoors with a series of crepe myrtles that lined our reception hall. It was perfect!” explained Lucie. Lastly, it was important to Lucie and Pranav that their guests have fun. Most of their guests traveled from across the country (and the world) to be with them for the wedding celebrations, “we wanted them to leave with lasting memories of their time spent with us in Nashville. We got to share some special new traditions with our friends and family, and we did it all with songs, dance, and food- lots and lots of food!,” states Lucie. When Pranav was asked his favorite part of the day, he told with a smile, “My highlight of the day was being in the Mandap (Hindu wedding altar) next to my bride while being surrounded by my family. It felt like the perfect union of two different cultures and starting the day with the Hindu ceremony and following it with the Catholic ceremony worked out perfectly for us.”

The day was truly magical, from start to finish. They began the day with the Baraat, which was a high energy parade where Pranav processed in on a horse, “which, despite what he says, I think he really enjoyed!” They then had their Hindu ceremony where a Hindu priest led them through the traditional wedding rituals, including the exchange of garlands, the showering of rice, and the 7 steps around a sacred fire. A small Indian lunch was hosted in the lobby before having everyone join at the Cathedral of the Incarnation to celebrate a beautiful Catholic ceremony. Finally, everyone reconvened in the courtyard for drinks and appetizers before the dinner reception. “Pranav and Lucie were such a pleasure to work with because they trusted me. It’s what every planner hopes for. Although people hire us, you wouldn’t believe how many truly can’t let go and believe we have their back. When I had an idea and pitched it…they went with it! To see it come to life for them just brings my joy that isn’t really explainable,” said Dawn. slmag.net

FOLK

Daalarna’s 2020 Bridal Collection Photographed by Papp Schneider @pappschneiderphotography / Hair & Makeup: @kisscsicsi Tradition meets modernity, and old meets new in the FOLK bridal collection, which merges traditional Hungarian folk-art shapes and design elements with Daalarna’s modern, feminine and sophisticated signature style. Puff sleeves and midi skirts made with layered and pulled techniques, geometric and floral motifs, as well as lace frills and pearl decorations – these romantic designs make each bridal gown stand out. Besides the wellknown bridal fabrics (lace, tulle, organza), there are some new authentic and unique additions like cotton, linen, and cotton lace. With the new FOLK collection, Daalarna designer, Anita Benes, not only aims to bring back these unique folk designs into 86 slmag.net

the public eye, but emphasizes more conscious choices for the younger generation. “In the past, a wedding or casual dress used to accompany its owner for the rest of her life. Therefore, women made smarter choices regarding shapes, tailoring, or colors. I love the way they formed the dresses with logic and spirit by respecting the fabrics and creating minimal wastage. While they tailored the dresses, they never forgot about the fact that it had to last at least a lifetime and might need some adjustments as it was not rare that later on, the next generation inherited them. In a modern sense, these amazing dresses were real basics and are the eternal symbols of a more sustainable society.”

THE WEDDING OF CARLY PEARCE AND MICHAEL RAY Drakewood Farms + October 6th, 2019 Written by Genevieve Moore Carly Pearce and Michael Ray of Nashville, TN planned a romantic ceremony under a canopy of trees on a fall Sunday at Drakewood Farms- a beautiful, quaint venue just north of the city. However, plan B took action when a collection of rainstorms were making their way towards the area. While it was Pearce’s dream to say her “I-Dos” surrounded by her closest family and friends in an outdoor nuptial, the call was made, and the Drakewood team quickly moved everything to their fully-covered barn. For most, this would have been a heartbreaking disappointment, but for Pearce and Ray, the rain “enhanced the day” completely. The sound of the rain falling on the 1850s barn added a level of whimsy that they couldn’t have even dreamt of. The ceremony was officiated by Bill Cody, a country radio DJ and announcer at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, while the couple exchanged vows they had written to their 100 seated guests. “Michael has changed my life completely, and the moment I saw him at the alter was just overwhelming–any heartbreaks or 88 slmag.net

feelings of doubt were worth the struggle to find each other. All of the people we love celebrated with us during the romantic ceremony as rain on the tin roof poured outside and then the party started with all of our best dance moves and some Southern food favorites,” laughed Carly. After becoming husband and wife, the guests made their way to the reception pavilion for dinner, dancing and cocktails. Pearce changed into her Hayley Paige ‘party dress,’ so she wouldn’t miss a beat on the dance floor. Grazing stations included shrimp and grits, build-your-own burgers, and a dessert station all catered by Chef ’s Market. “We are both super close to our families so it was a fun process planning each detail with my mom. Seeing all of the pieces come together though was more magical than I could have imagined and really represented Michael and me as a couple with our individual tastes too,” says Pearce. THE WEDDING OF LOIS EMILY NOEL AND CORY JAMES SANDERSON Green Door Gourmet + November 17th, 2018 Photographed by John Yates The marriage of Lois Emily Noel (Emy) Nashville, and Cory James Sanderson, Nashville, formerly from West Newton, MA, took place on Saturday, November 17th, 2018 at 5:00 in the afternoon in the grande Barn at Green Door Gourmet, Nashville. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a Chantilly lace and silk chiffon custom design by New York based designer, Leanne Marshall. Her wild flower bouquet was tied with silk ribbon and pinned with an heirloom brooch once belonging to her great-great-grandmother, worn by all the brides in her family. Emy also wore her mother’s pearl and diamond drop earrings, a gift to her daughter. Beneath antique brass chandeliers restored from the bride’s family’s historic Noel Hotel, and garlands of lemon leaves and wild flowers, the couple exchanged vows. During the ceremony, both favorite hymns and other Early American wedding music was provided by Craig Duncan and his Bluegrass ensemble. 92 slmag.net

After the ceremony, guests moved to an adjoining tent, complete with wooden rafters and flooring, designed by wedding planner, Amos Gott to resemble the Grande Barn. Arbors of Smilax and old lanterns hung from the ceiling. The couple, both avid rowers, paid homage to their shared passion by using a personalized crest of crossed oars throughout the evening. It originated on their uniquely designed wedding announcements and wedding invitations. As guests enjoyed hot d’hoeuvres and special drinks in the tent, the ceremony area was cleverly transformed into a dining area, complete with trestle tables, wooden chairs and gorgeous blue hydrangeas and roses mixed with wild flowers. Guests received escort cards that included a variety of favorite quotes loved and selected by the couple. Nashville caterer extraordinaire, Kristen Winston, prepared and served a delicious three-course seated dinner. Afterwards, guests

enjoyed wedding cake, baked by Dessert Designs. The bride used a vintage porcelain cake topper from her grandmother’s wedding in 1947. Guests danced into the night to the music of The Downtown Band, Nashville, until the couple departed in a 1964 turquoise Dodge D100 truck for the Noelle Hotel in downtown Nashville. Afterwards, as guests waited for the valet, they enjoyed hot cider, an assortment of delicious flavors from Nashville Pretzel and personalized favors, complete with original artwork by the groom. The bride and groom met after a good friend and fellow teacher encouraged Emy to give crew a chance. She attended a Nashville Rowing Club practice, and became both a committed rower and a supportive member of the various teams and the outstanding youth program. It was there that she met Cory, the Executive Director of Nashville Rowing Club. By the next fall, 2017, they had their first date and met each other’s families

soon after. In December of 2018 Cory asked her parents for her hand in marriage and, shortly thereafter, presented her with his grandmother’s treasured diamond and emerald ring. Their November 17th, 2019 wedding date was chosen in consideration of their heavy competitive Rowing schedule throughout the fall . Emy, a graduate of The Harpeth Hall School, Nashville, The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Lewis & Clark College, Portland , Oregon, is an English teacher at The Harpeth Hall School. The groom is a graduate of St. Paul’s School, Concord, N.H. and Bates College, Lewiston, ME. and is the Executive Director of Nashville Rowing Club. They live in Franklin, TN. with their two pups, Lewes and Calder. THE REHEARSAL DINNER OF MEGAN GREFFEN AND BEAU FOWLER Hosted at Tailor Nashville

Written by Genevieve Moore / Photographed by Erin Lee Allender Beau and Megan have always had a little tumbleweed spirit in them. Having moved to Nashville from New York City, the couple was excited to finally put down some roots and (half-joked) that one doesn’t establish a home until they’ve reached “regular” status at a restaurant, bar, or local coffee shop. The couple has become dedicated customers to many of Nashville’s amazing restaurants, but when they visited Tailor for the first time, they instantly felt like family. When considering location for their upcoming rehearsal dinner prior to their early November nutpitals, they knew they wanted a kind of reception that felt of warmth and intimacy; “The feeling of Tailor really made an impression on us as transplants in Nashville. We were so drawn to the environment, the staff, the incredible seasonal menuit is so unique, yet also so familiar. We knew Tailor hadn’t even been open a year, so we were cautiously optimistic (but totally unsurprised) when we approached Vivek and he accepted our proposal to host our rehearsal dinner with enthusiasm,” explains Megan. 98 slmag.net

Vivek and his team put their heart and soul into the night. They helped Beau and Megan create a custom menu honoring the building blocks of their relationship and paid homage to some of their most cherished places: halibut from Maryland (the bride’s home state) a pork coppa with flavors of Thailand (their engagement location), New York City cheesecake, and a special lamb dish for Beau from ‘India via the United Kingdom.’ Vivek introduced each dish to the guests with heartfelt words, “our friends and family were enchanted by the entire experience.” The theme to their wedding was home; and how ‘home’ isn’t a physical place, it’s a feeling. “Tailor is home to us- it was a natural fit to celebrate this milestone, and we are so proud to have this amazing gem woven into the fabric of our wedding weekend.” Venue + Catering: Tailor // Planning & Design: Olive & Ivy Events lorals: Lauren Marie Atkinson with LMA Designs // Audio: Nashville Audio Visual Photography Erin Lee Allender { erinleeallender.com } Tailor Nashville 1300B 3rd Ave N Nashville, TN 37208 tailornashville.com

WISH UPON A WEDDING

Local Nashville Vendors Created a Memorable Wedding for Amanda DiMarzio + Sean Woodard Written by Allison Epstein / Photographed by Nyk + Cali Wedding Photographers Founded in 2011, Wish Upon a Wedding grants weddings and vow renewals to couples facing terminal illnesses or life altering circumstances. The organization, headquartered in Columbus, OH, partners with wedding planners, referred to as ‘wish granters,’ across the country who donate their time, talents and resources, including relationships with local vendors, from caterers to florists, to provide couples with one day that is filled with love and light, and free from the worry of their disease. “We work to ensure we are helping those who are the sickest and give them nothing shy of a day full of pure joy,” says Keri Durkin, President of Wish Upon a Wedding. “It gives them hope to survive yet one more day.” For the local Nashville couple, Amanda DiMarzio and Sean Woodard, it all started in the fall of 2017 on Bumble. The recent divorcés weren’t expecting to find love so quickly, let alone, through a dating app. DiMarzio’s opening line: “death row meal choice?” and Woodard’s answer: “anything with Reese’s.” Within one week of messaging, they went on their first date. What started as a simple dinner, extended to losing a game of laser tag to a group of middle schoolers followed by jokingly drowning their sorrows in craft cocktails at a local Speakeasy. Although strangers, they felt like they had known each other for years. “We were both having a good time – it felt so natural,” says Woodard, a self-employed carpenter. “Amanda has helped me come out of my shell. She is energetic, caring, loving and selfless. No matter how tired she is, she keeps going for us.” DiMarzio was diagnosed in 2015 after experiencing what doctors told her were merely panic attacks. After much research on her own and a trip to the emergency room with irregular heart palpitations, she finally underwent the tests needed to ultimately discover the root cause of her severe pain and fatigue was Metastatic Neuroendocrine/Carcinoid Syndrome, a very rare form of cancer unresponsive to traditional treatments like radiation. Her prognosis has a ten percent survival rate within five years. She continues her chemotherapy treatments every 28 days and takes approximately 35-40 pills and one to three injections a day to

survive. As the cancer spreads from her liver to her lymph nodes and bones, she remains optimistic for the future. Within only minutes of opening the invitation so graciously extended to Sophisticated Living Magazine, Editor in Chief, Britt Steele, jumped at the opportunity to attend what she was certain would be an unforgettable, beautifully blessed and sacred union. “I was so honored, and beyond touched, to have been included in what I knew would be a very intimate invite list. My excitement towards joining Amanda, Sean and their family grew exponentially with each passing day.” Amanda’s playful, kind and genuinely beautiful spirit is one of her many magnetic attributes. With each step down the aisle, in a stunning blush-colored gown, her closest friends and family were the fortunate recipients of her grace, poise and contagious joy-filled serenity, shooting an occasional wink in her parent’s and children’s direction. “Knowing all the details of their special day remained a surprise, as the evening unfolded before their eyes, it was incredible to experience their ‘Christmas-morning-like’ reactions firsthand,” Steele shared, “the happy couple wore that magical glow better than anyone I’ve ever seen.” Their four children served as the bridal party with DiMarzio’s youngest son, age 7, walking her down the aisle. Local wish granter, Laurie Hardman, of Laurie D’Anne Events, oversaw the entire production, from securing the venue and band to creating the centerpieces and organizing the seating chart. This is the third wedding Laurie D’Anne Events has produced pro-bono through Wish Upon a Wedding. She brings 10 years of experience designing and planning hundreds of events, from weddings to CMA after parties, fundraisers and more. “I love producing events, especially weddings, because you become this unique part of one of the most important days in someone’s life,” says Hardman. “Amanda and Sean are such a lovely couple. Amanda is so fun and upbeat. We partnered with an amazing team to produce this wedding celebration and we are all honored to be a part of this event.” To learn more about Wish Upon a Wedding, visit wishuponawedding.org. slmag.net 101

Symphony Ball Patron Dinner

The stunning residence of Vicki and Kerry McCluggage was a delightful stage for the 2019 Symphony Ball Patrons Dinner. Honoring the patrons, the home was decorated in festive Christmas Holiday finery. Cocktails were served throughout the home with the accompaniment of the Nashville Symphony Quartet. The dinner tent was stunning, suspended from the tent ceiling were long-stemmed white amaryllis, white florals mixed with Christmas greenery surrounded the clear dinner tent. H3 Events produced the decor of the evening with a fabulous catered dinner by Something Special, and special it was. Sweet and sour short ribs, perfect for a chilly evening, to finish with a chocolate truffle tree and French vanilla crème brûlée. A Night In Havana

7

The 2019 Conservancy Gala, themed “Now and Then: Havana Nights.” The radiant pair of Co-Chairs Josephine VanDevender and Trish Munro produced an edgy, resplendent evening with an explosion of energy! Dating back to the Tennessee Centennial Exposition of 1897, the Cuban Exhibition was a showcase of the vibrant and rich culture of the Caribbean Island. Cuba’s carefree capital, Havana, and its culture was the overall design of the evening. The florals were out of this world, orchids, tropical blooming plants, palms, fruits, and citrus melons, giving a delightful Caribbean scent. Cocktails were held in the Pantheon’s Treasury Room, Guests were led to the dinner tent by a Cuban Carnival Dance- the Conga Line Dance. Following dinner, salsa music and dancing; just as if being in the famed Tropicana Club. Event Planning by Big Events, the delightful Caribbean feast by G. Catering. Symphony Ball

A Golden Beauty- The 2019 Symphony Ball. Designer, Hugh Howser, in my opinion, transformed the Schermerhorn Symphony Center into a grand temple using low candlelight and laurel wreaths throughout. The laurel wreath represents victory and triumph; indeed this was a victorious and triumphant evening. Apollo, the Greek and Roman God of sun, music, light, and knowledge would have been proud of the success of the evening. During the evening, there were two Harmony Award Presentations, the recipients this year were Alan Valentine for his role as President and CEO of the Nashville Symphony since 1998. Kelsea Ballerini was the second recipient of the outstanding 2019 Harmony Award. Ballerini was the evening’s performer and is the only female artist ever to achieve three consecutive Number One songs from a debut album. A triumphal 6 year orchestrated by Greek Goddesses Co-Chairs Amy Smith and Laura Kimbrell with a touch of Apollo, all for the support of our Nashville Symphony celebrating victory, conquest and grand accomplishments.
