South America
Patagonia, Chile
atagonia, the southern edge of South America, is so wild and vast a single country can’t contain it. Shared by both Chile and Argentina, this majestic land of enormous glaciers, wide-open skies, and magical fjords is adventure incarnate. I’m sharing a very adventurous itinerary this month in the hopes you’ll want to discover Patagonia’s savage beauty by land and sea on a tour I will customize for you, bookended with unforgettable moments in bustling Buenos Aires and enchanting Santiago.
of mighty Iguazú Falls. Inside the national park that houses this breathtaking natural wonder, you’ll have the chance to walk the network of pathways to “Garganta del Diabo” (in Spanish) or Devil’s Throat with a private guide, then take to the river in a speed boat for an up-close glimpse of both the falls and the wildliferich rainforests that surround them. After an overnight stay in the jungle, nestled in luxurious accommodations, you’ll journey far to the south and the adventurous El Calafate.
Begin in Buenos Aires, the most European of South America’s cities, with a private tour of the Argentinian capital’s trendy neighborhoods, historic sites, and recently unearthed subterranean passageways beneath the narrow cobblestone streets of San Telmo. The latest and most sophisticated neighborhood, La Recoleta, is where you will enjoy a brief break to explore the gorgeous Plaza San Martín, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, and the celebrated Recoleta Cemetery. Some of the most important characters of Argentina’s political and cultural life are buried here, including Eva Peron. Marvel at the area known as Palermo Woods, an area adorned with beautiful rose gardens, forest formations, and lakes. After having gained a deeper insight in this culturally rich city, you will be returned to your fabulous hotel to freshen up for a special dinner at El Querandi with a Tango Show.
The entrance to Argentinian Patagonia, El Calafate retains its rugged frontier-town appeal with all sorts of modern accents. I will have tour guides to take you along the old Estancias route that historically links Patagonian culture, its indigenous peoples, steppe and pioneers. It’s a great option for a more exclusive cultural experience of the area. You will follow the route of Patagonian ranches past Lake Roca until you reach the access point to the National Park. Soon after, you arrive at one of the best places to get a taste of the gaucho lifestyle: the Estancia Nibepo Aike. It’s great for horseback riding, and during this visit you will enjoy some amazing gaucho skills, including sheep shearing.
A short flight north brings you face-to-face with one of Argentina’s most stunning sights; the 275 interlined cataracts
Head to the southernmost tip of the continent and Ushuaia for the perfect Instagram moment at the “End of the World” sign before embarking on a private tour of Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego. The park was established in 1960 with the intention of protecting the southernmost portion of the sub-Antarctic forest. Unlike many other parks, it combines the ocean, forests, and mountains.

The biological richness of the Tierra del Fuego Island with its beautiful scenery is simply stunning. You can find animals such as red foxes, Cauquenes ducks, Patagonian woodpeckers, beavers, rabbits, and more than 90 species of birds that are part of the Fuegian fauna. The most magical aspects of this region can only be explored by water, so your home for four nights will be the well-appointed Ventus Australis --Latin for “Southern Wind”--tailor-made for exploring these waters. You will cruise through the Beagle Channel, past the black of Cape Horn, and around the massive Pia Glacier and majestic Agostini Sound. Enter the remote archipelago that comprises Cape Horn National Park. Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition, Cape Horn is a sheer 1,394-foot high, rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years, it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic and was often referred to as the “End of the Earth.” The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005.
and the Chilean mainland. Crowned by a distinctive lighthouse, the island used to be an essential source of supplies for navigators and explorers and is inhabited by an immense colony of Magellanic penguins. You’ll go ashore and hike a path that leads through thousands of penguins to a small museum lodged inside the vintage 1902 lighthouse. In September and April, when the penguins dwell elsewhere, I would send you to Marta Island instead, to observe South American sea lions. After a short cruise south along the strait, disembark at Punta Arenas for your flight north to Santiago.
In Santiago, the Chilean capital, you’ll get to know this fascinating city through a private tour of its gastronomic hot spots and bustling markets. Unwind in the resplendent Maipo Valley with a private vineyard tour and wine tasting at the legendary Santa Rita Winery. The cellar of this winery has been declared a National Monument. The winery’s restaurant was also declared a National Monument and is called “Doña Paula” in honor to Paula Jaraquemada, a woman that in the Independence period gave refuge to O’Higgins and 120 of his soldiers. SHE IS ALL.LocalTHE. THINGS. Luminary, Landyn Hutchinson Written by Gloria Houghland / Photographed by Sebastian Smith To meet Landyn Hutchinson, the wildly popular Nashville-based influencer and founder of lifestyle blog, “Living with Landyn,” is like bumping into your high school BFF at Target. She’s easy. She’s a hugger. She talks to strangers in grocery stores. She’s the ultimate girl’s girl. And, she is not shy about sharing—-a trait that seems contagious as, within a few minutes of meeting her, whomever she’s talking to is sharing right back as though they’ve been friends for decades. She’s a wife, mother and the head cheerleader for her very own brand. She’s a high-energy, glass-half-full kind of girl, not at all full-of-herself, downright fun, and yet radiantly confident. She is easy to connect with immediately and just like her blog, podcast, monthly newsletter, Instagram Live, Instagram Stories, Twitter, national speaking tours, forthcoming book, new retail venue and YouTube videos, Landyn’s a dynamic Everywoman—-an accessible whirling dervish who’s just gotten started. Born in Florida in 1977, Landyn was named for the TV heartthrob of the day, Michael Landon (though her grandmother wisely suggested the amended spelling to make the name more fitting for a girl). Following her young parents’ divorce when she was just two, Landyn and her then-24-year old mother, Belinda, became a “team taking on the world.” Those were the enduring moments that set the stage for her future metamorphosis. After her mother remarried when she was 12, they moved to a different school district, a change that indelibly altered the trajectory of Landyn’s life. It would be the place where she would fully blossom, and quickly become a star attraction (our assessment, not her’s), particularly in the eyes of a certain football player named Steve Hutchinson. The 6’5”, devastatingly handsome athlete would go on to become Captain of the football team while Landyn became President of the Senior Class. And, of course, he would be chosen as Homecoming King while, you guessed it, she became Homecoming Queen. Yep, she was “that” girl.

Landyn eventually married her 8th grade sweetheart, giving up a nursing career to follow her husband’s successful career as an All-American offensive guard at the University of Michigan and a multi-time All-Pro in the NFL, playing for the Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks. Steve’s prowess on the field brought them to Nashville, where he joined the Tennessee Titans in 2012. With daughter, Lily, 14, and son, Luke, 12, this seemingly perfect nuclear family has been calling the Volunteer State “home” ever since. It is clear that Landyn has taken her many life lessons to heart, integrated them into her day-to-day and openly takes her followers behind-the-scenes and shows them absolutely everything she knows, along with what she’s still learning and the mistakes made along the way. Her genuine best friend/girl-next-door manner appears to be the magic ingredient that shot her brand into the stratosphere. And, yet, it’s not a staged, polished, sparkling, idyllic life that she showcases. “When I fail, I try to show those moments, too, because I know my friends and followers have experienced failure, as well. I want everyone to know it’s okay.” She honestly reveals parts of herself that many of us won’t even admit to possessing. She answers her door barefoot and graciously invites viewers into her home, dressed in blue jeans and a t-shirt. Her casual comfort level, candid vulnerability and total openness are the precise characteristics her ardently enthusiastic followers find so engaging.

Landyn still cites Belinda as the single greatest influence in her life. “My mom had great style and loved to entertain, just like Martha Stewart. She started my love for HomeGoods and Walmart, because that was where she could afford to shop at the time. I learned to love the hunt for a bargain,” Landyn explains laughingly. “Today, she is still my first phone call every morning. My dad, Kevin, taught me at an early age, to save for the things I wanted, and he insisted that I have a job. I bought my first car myself, a red pick-up truck with a stick shift, and paid for my own insurance. As a nurse, I learned to work under pressure, a skill that’s with me every day. Being an NFL family, we have moved nine times, but always sought out charities wherever we lived. Now, I feel that I am helping people in a different way. I want to empower women. My life has created my content, not the reverse.” With regard to how she became an entrepreneur with herself as “the brand,” Landyn is refreshingly forthright. “I had no clue how to start a blog or a website,” she confesses. And, yet, she has emerged from the ever-expanding digital clutter to become a significant influencer. “After years of my friends asking me where I got my shirt, what color paint I’d used in the living room or how to make my favorite appetizer, I decided that maybe there were people out there, besides my Mom, who might read what I had to say. That led to my consigning my clothes online and saving enough money to build an online space where I could share all the things in my life that I truly love.” The phrase “All The Things” has become an integral part of the Living With Landyn brand, along with other now-familiar “Landynisms” such as, “If you’re not excited, you’re not invited!” She credits Nashville‘s creative bonhomie for instilling her with the confidence necessary to transform her lifelong hobby of doing it all and knowing a lot into a flourishing business in 2016.

Her YouTube videos often take place while she’s sitting cross-legged in the middle of her white, plushed dressed bed, either with pals who have special expertise to impart or while just looking straight into the camera and talking to her thousands of friends (not ‘followers’ as she would be quick to remind you) about clothing, home decor, relationships, her style and any other personal questions that her fans might ask. Because she is so heart-wrenchingly honest, these conversations are occasionally filled with both laughter and tears. Other times, she takes her fan base video shopping with her at HomeGoods, Marshall’s, World Market, Walmart or Target. And, they are thrilled to follow along because they are simply dying to know what Landyn’s thinking while she’s filling her cart. They want to know what her skincare regimen is, her everyday make-up routine, her home maintenance tips, how she styles her hair, her parenting tools, her recipes, and where her family vacations, not to mention additional details about her beautifully outfitted RV, which deftly delivers the Hutchinsons stream-side in the nearby mountains for fishing and camping….doing the very same things that the rest of America does in the summertime, but, perhaps, with a bit more panache. The products she prefers and recommends are generally quite affordable and sell lickety-split. Landyn is not paid to endorse or support certain products, she recommends them because she truly believes in them and hopes they will help other women the way in which they helped her. With more than 168k followers, Landyn’s personal endorsements have quickly evolved into far more than an Instagram Story. She populated her website with her favorite resources for “all the things,” so that her followers could access them anytime, anywhere. Her it-doesn’thave-to-be-complicated approach to her work-life also led her to “take her show on the road” as a national speaker. Not surprisingly, Living With Landyn Live! is now attracting thousands of clamoring fans from coast to coast. Her new Music City bricks-and-mortar retail space is slated to debut this summer in the L&L Marketplace, a former hosiery mill on Charlotte Avenue. The store will feature a selection of highly anticipated merchandise, which her followers helped her choose, based on their feedback to her Instagram polls, conducted as she was shopping at the wholesale gift market earlier this year. Landyn’s entrepreneurial journey since she arrived in Nashville a little more than six years ago has progressed at the speed of light, though she confides that she believes it all began when she was a mere girl growing up with a young, single mother. Together, they became stronger as a forever-bonded twosome. Her mother’s standing advice to her is the exact same advice which Landyn universally imparts to others today: Be honest, be you, and be humble. Elevate others. Remember, good attracts good. Today, it’s obvious that Landyn could not be more delightedly invested in this all-encompassing lifestyle cloud that has organically bloomed around her. Though her legions of devotees do come second to her family, she has found that she thrives on the consistent female-to-female connections she experiences every day. She says knowingly: “Let’s face it, women are just better together.” sl Photography by Sebastian Smith // Styling by Lacie Thorne // Hair & Makeup by Lessie Litzenberg // Rentals provided by Please Be Seated // Attire provided by Gus Mayer Follow our team on Instagram @sebsmithmedia // @laciethorne // @lnlitz // @sophisticatedliving_nashville

MONTEVERRO An Italian pioneer winery now at your fingertips Written by Genevieve Moore “I was finishing a winery tour in Piedmont, the initial goal of my Italian trip, when I decided to finally take some time to visit a small boutique winery I’ve heard about that has been peeking my curiosity for quite a long time,” Brad Morley, owner of Cana Wine Company, excitingly recalls regarding his recent visit at Monteverro winery over a lunch at Moto restaurant in Nashville. “As I drove down the long straight road (which is rare in Italy) following my GPS towards the Monteverro’s location, I got a feeling I might drive past it. Well, as I progressed, I soon passed a group of beautifully maintained olive trees and came across a magnificent winery on my left, thoughts of ‘are you serious,’ were rumbling off my lips.” Monteverro is a best-kept secret winery at the foothill of the medieval Capalbio, in the southernmost part of Tuscany, nestled on three gentle slopes on the Costa D’Argento. The winery tour begins with a drive-up to a fascinating terrace
overlooking the vineyard with the light blue enchantment of the Tyrrenian Sea on the horizon. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot and additionally, Chardonnay, Syrah and Grenache, are the varietals farmed organically under the Tuscan sun. A true philosophy of respect of the terroir, and a precise block selection, drives the farming and winemaking at the vineyard. This translates into micro harvestsmeaning the grapes are harvested in small cases when they have reached their ideal ripeness point, and each lot is then tracked up into the barrel. The fermentation process is natural, so no preselected yeast is added. In addition, to be more gentle to the wine, all vinification process is done by gravity with a special crane system. It is just during the blending phase where the best barrels end up in the flagship wine Monteverro and the remaining are the basis for Terra di Monteverro, the second wine and entry-level Verruzzo, the other two Cabernet based wines of the range.

In 2011 the first four wines of vintage 2008 made their debut: Monteverro, from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, Terra di Monteverro, the same blend but more immediate; Tinata, produced with Syrah and Grenache, and Chardonnay. Later on, the offerings were enriched with two new products: Verruzzo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot with a small percentage of Sangiovese, and Vermentino di Monteverro. “Even before I tasted these wines, I was drawn to the attention to detail and to the drive given to each bottle, as I do the same with Brad Morley Selections (bradmorleyselections.com), which is based on those values and sold worldwide through its parent company CANA Wine Company.” adds Morley. This is the same passion that brought a young Georg Weber, owner of Monteverro, to discover the area at the beginning of 2000, “I arrived in this paradisiac place” –recalls Weber - “between the hills and the sea, and I felt the summer breeze and breathed in the Mediterranean perfumes arising from the scrub. And in that moment, I decided that was the right place, with the exact potential, I was looking for for my winery project.” In the meanwhile, Monteverro has blown the candles on the 10 harvests already. “I am a huge fan and a true believer that Monteverro is producing the rival to the well know top producers of Super
Tuscan and Italian Chardonnay’s. I am proud to have been chosen to represent this fantastic winery,” Morley expresses. As beautifully stated in Morley’s experience, it goes without saying that the Monteverro people work daily exuding passion and dedication, without ever compromising: from using organic farming principles since the beginning in 2003, to implementing innovative vinification techniques, the results are beyond all expectations. Their mission is and always will be to strive for a sustainable balance between soil and vine. “Monteverro has been investing a lot of time in vineyard research, working with several Italian universities,” explains Matthieu Taunay, winemaker of the winery since the beginning. The aim is to grow knowledge of the various parameters: hydric stress of plants, presence of beneficial insects and monitoring of harmful insects, but also the effects of new natural plant protectors. Respect and authenticity: As authentic the surroundings are, with long beaches and untouched nature, and rich in art and history, so are the wines, the best expression of what Maremma terroir has to offer. Monteverro is now avaible in the United States via e-commerce from Nashville’s own local business, Cana Wine (canawineco.com). sl For more information on visiting Monteverro Vineyard Tel: +39 0564 890937 / Email: visit@monteverro.com / www.monteverro.com

MID-ENGINE, HIGH EXPECTATIONS
The 2020 C8 Stingray is Chevrolet's first-ever production mid-engine Corvette Written by Andre James / Photos courtesy of Chevrolet Explaining that the traditional front-engine configuration had reached its performance limits, GM President Mark Ruess, said that the iconic Corvette was due for a new layout. “In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history.” In addition to adding a futuristic dimension to the classic corvette silhouette, the mid-engine layout provides for better weight distribution, as well as improved responsiveness credited to driver positioning closer to the front axle. The new Corvette also boasts excellent forward sightlines, due to a lower positioning of the hood, instrument panel, and steering wheel. “As America’s most iconic performance nameplate, redesigning the Corvette Stingray from the ground up presented the team a historic opportunity, something Chevrolet designers have desired for over 60 years,” said Michael Simcoe, vice president of Global Design, General Motors. Like a gem on display in a glass case, the 6.2L Small Block V-8 LT2 engine— the only naturally aspirated V-8 in the segment —is
visible through the large rear hatch window. Every one of the engine components, all the way down to the bolts, were built with aesthetics in mind. Seven air vents accentuate this focal point. The V-8 LT2 engine produces 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when equipped with performance exhaust — the most horsepower and torque of any entry-level Corvette. When equipped with the Z51 Performance Package, it has the fastest 0-60 time of any Corvette ever. This power, paired with Chevrolet’s first eight-speed dualclutch transmission, translates to lightning-fast shifts and excellent power transfer. While a manual transmission option was left out of the redesign, paddle shifters allow drivers to choose a specific gear. “The performance shift algorithms are so driver-focused, they can sense when you’re doing spirited driving — regardless of driving mode — and will hold lower gears longer for more throttle response,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer. slmag.net

In addition to the familiar Weather, Tour, Sport, and Track driver mode choices, two new modes have been added. MyMode is a configurable setting for a preferred driving style that can remain between key cycles. Z mode, which is activated through a “Z” button on the steering wheel, is a single-use mode that takes MyMode configurations one step further, allowing drivers to adjust the engine and transmission. With an exterior design that draws cues from modern fighter jets and Formula One racing, the canopy-forward stance boasts a commanding presence with aggressive front fenders, low profile headlamps and uninterrupted body contour lines courtesy of completely hidden door, hood and hatch releases. Dual trunks offer a combined 12.6 cubic feet of storage space Inside the aeronautic-inspired cockpit, a new squared-off, two-spoke heated steering wheel enables an unobscured view of the 12-inch reconfigurable cluster display. Interior accoutrements
encompass hand-wrapped leather components with thick-press stitching; a generous use of metal, including stainless steel speaker grilles with Bose Performance Series audio system; a choice of aluminum or carbon fiber for console and door trim plates; Corvette’s next-generation infotainment system; and, an industry-pioneering Performance Data Recorder, an advanced driving analysis tool. Options for customization abound, from paint colors to performance. Fancy an Accelerate Yellow body and Adrenaline Red cabin? You can have it by choosing from twelve exterior colors and six interior color themes, in addition to six seat belt colors and two optional stitch packages. A trio of seat options range from the GT1, which emphasizes comfort, to the Competition Sport, which is designed for the track-focused driver. Scheduled to go into production at GM’s Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant in late 2019, the 2020 Stingray will start at under $60,000 (chevy.com/nextgencorvette). sl slmag.net

SOUTHERN DRAW Montage Palmetto Bluff Written by Bridget Williams Spanish moss languidly dangling from majestic live oak trees, waiting for a passing breeze to break its stupor. A sinuous flame endlessly shimmying within a gas lantern. The rhythmic ticking of a fan as it whirls away beneath its mount on porch ceiling painted Haint blue. These sleepy and sultry keepers of the cadence of the deep South are utterly intoxicating to me; their charms persist even as the pace slows even more at the height of summer, when the humidity hangs around your shoulders like a wet, warm blanket and the best antidote is a glass of sweet tea. Epitomizing an idealized version of genteel Lowcountry is Palmetto Bluff, a 20,000-acre development within the historic community of Bluffton, South Carolina. At its heart is Wilson Village, a mixed-use city center whose architecture—including tidy cottages and larger estates disguised as a cluster of smaller dwellings—belies the fact that many of the structures are just over a decade old. Miles and miles of hiking and walking paths meander like the many tributaries of the nearby May, Cooper, and New Rivers. Prominently yet comfortably nestled into this utopia is the Montage Palmetto Bluff, the first East Coast outpost of Montage Hotels & Resorts. Surrounded by 32 miles of riverfront, the resort is comprised of guest cottages, Montage-branded residences 36 slmag.net
and a 74-room Inn that debuted in 2016. With its vast front porch supported by grand columns, the architecture of the Inn pays homage to a storied mansion that stood nearby in the early 1900s . Inside, the elegant coastal-inspired interiors are sprinkled with heirloom-quality fine art (including pieces by notable local artists) and antiques that lend a feeling of residential realness to the graciously proportioned rooms. Arriving at lunchtime, I gladly whiled away the hour before my room was ready by tucking into one of the tastiest cobb salads I've ever had at the Inn's Jessamine Restaurant. The tang of the salad's pimento ranch dressing mixed with the sweetness of candied pecans was divine. Guests of the Inn have access to all seven restaurants spread out over two villages in Palmetto Bluff. The heartiness of Southern cuisine is legendary, and people in living in this region have eaten well for generations. Archaeologists say that ancient shell middens located on high bluffs next to local waterways are remnants of oyster roasts by the Altamaha and Yamassee Native American tribes. Appetites have remained consistent according to Executive Chef Nathan Beriau who said the restaurants under his charge can go through ten-thousands oysters on a holiday weekend.

At Cole's restaurant in the newly developed Moreland Neighborhood, tabby concrete accent walls pay homage to the bounty of the nearby marshland. After loading up on yummy fried pickles, head next door to the state-of-the-art bowling alley, whose gleaming lanes were crafted from a single cypress tree felled on the property. Palmetto Bluff strives to be an ambassador for the foodways of the Lowcountry. You can taste this commitment at every dining outlet, as they receive produce from a small working farm on property. Going beyond the table, their farmers are committed to understanding and improving best practices that can be shared with students and the broader community. So, while you're indulging at Buffalo's famous Biscuit Bar, a craft cocktail at the Octagon Bar, or coastal cuisine at the Canoe Club, you can feel good about supporting local producers. Lucky for me there were ample options to keep active in atonement for my daily indulgences. Each morning I referred to the weekly activities booklet to inform the day's agenda. A cruiser-style bike assigned to me for the duration of my stay allowed for frequent leisurely rides on wide paved bike trails, as well as a few forays onto unpaved pathways that provided an even closer look at the local flora and fauna. An absolute highlight for me was a sunrise kayak excursion. As we paddled
across the smooth-as-glass waters, dolphins dipped in and out of crimson-colored spotlights created by dawn's first light breaking through the clouds. There's also an option to explore local waterways at a more leisurely pace aboard Grace, a recently restored 60-foot 1913 motor yacht. Anglers can fish inland waterways, coastal shallows, or deep waters offshore. Located in a 40-acre hardwood bottom, the new Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club offers 13 sporting clay stations. The Wilson Lawn and Racquet Club features two manicured croquet lawns, two bocce courts, and eight Har-Tru tennis courts. Longfield Stables is part of a 173-acre equestrian facility that offers a variety of programs for guests of all ages and levels of experience. A booklet is printed each week outlining the myriad activities available to guests. A unique aspect of the development is the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy, whose staff of six, including an archaeologist, are tasked with being stewards of the environment and cultural heritage of the property. They carry out their mission via a combination of wildlife management, research, and more than 200 outreach events annually. Conservancy staff have an infectious level of enthusiasm for their job, which has resulted in marked improvements to the local ecosystem at all levels, from bugs to raptors.

Conservancy staff were consulted during development of the par-72, 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed May River championship golf course. Seashore paspalum turfgrass was chosen for being drought resistant and able to handle contact with brackish water. Pesticide use is kept as low as possible, and bird boxes throughout the course ensure that you'll experience at least one type of birdie during your round. A comfort station on the 6th and 15th holes serves up boiled eggs with hot sauce, a curious but beloved Palmetto Bluff tradition started years ago by the original director of the golf program. Back at the Inn, Spa Montage Palmetto Bluff eschews the temptation that befalls many destination spas who veer from their given sense of place into something more generic. The crisp
palette of the pretty environs stays in step with the rest of the property. A spa is only as good as its therapists, and my facialist was a master. My 90-minute facial used indulgent Tata Harper products, including a mask made with pure raw honey that smelled good enough to eat. Spa guests can partake of eucalyptus steam rooms, a whirlpool, cold plunge pool, and redwood sauna. While I still hold tight to my love of the South's sleepy slant, I'll readily admit that I didn't mind upping the tempo to take advantage of the sophisticated satiation offered by engaging in all aspects of the Montage experience. EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSÉ California-meets-Provence at Azur, who pioneered premium Provençale rosé production in the United States Written by Chloe Gellar As summer slowly begins its fade into fall, I find myself reaching for rosé to bridge the gap between light, crisp summer sipping white wines and heartier fireside reds. But if you ask Élan Fayard, co-founder of Azur Wines in the Napa Valley, she'll say that rosé is seasonless. "It's a fun wine that always has its place on the table," she said. A Bay Area native and a Francophile from an early age, Élan spent her sophomore year studying abroad in Angers, France. Her passion for food, wine, and the written word took her on a postcollege journey to Oregon's Willamette Valley and then back to France, where she worked and studied in Bordeaux and Provence. Along the way, she met winemaker Julien Fayard, who hails from a French wine-producing family, and together they devised a plan for making French-inspired and terroir-driven wine in California. "Napa is the Bordeaux of the USA," explained Élan. "It was our goal to produce the best wines possible, and we sought out sunlight and a great place to live. Napa footed the bill." Julien's family has been making rosé in Provence for more than five decades. Upon their return to the United States fifteen years ago, both Julien and Élan were discouraged by a dearth of good rosé. In fact, the words "quality" and "rosé" were rarely, if ever used in the same sentence. Seeking to define their niche in the Napa Valley, they started a pioneering crusade to change rosé's image, one sip at a time. Julien worked with local growers to select and harvest grapes for dedicated rosé wine production. 44 slmag.net
With the release of their first 50 cases, Azur quickly made a name for itself as the first winery in the United States dedicated to an authentic Provençale technique for rosé wine production. The name the Fayard's chose for their winery—Azur— pays homage to the time they spent living in Southern France and underscores that their wines are produced in the French style. Élan said the first three years in business were the hardest, as they worked to inform miseducated consumers that rosé isn't white Zinfandel. Today, Azur has two labels. Azur, which encompasses a rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, a Proprietary Red, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Reserve. Ideal for avid collectors, their Empreinte label is a single vineyard designee only available through allocation as production is limited to 100 cases or less. In 2018 the winery opened The Green Room, its first tasting room. Outfitted in reclaimed wood and touches of sumptuous green velvet, a floor-to-ceiling window in the intimate space provides a full view into the crush pad. While Élan admits to missing some of the aspects unique to living in France, she does enjoy the wine and food culture in Napa. "It's an invigorating place to live where nearly everyone in this industry is here by choice. That may not seem like much, but almost every person you meet is following their passion." sl Open daily from 11am-6pm, The Green Room at Azur located at 190 Camino Oruga #9 in Napa, California. BREAKING THE MOLD
Lotus unveils the world's most potent all-electric production car Written by Andre James This past July at the Royal Horticultural Halls in the heart of London, the oohs and aahs emanating from hundreds of VIP guests were louder than the engine of the hypercar they'd gathered to ogle. Guests were greeted outside the event by a convoy of a dozen historic and current Lotus cars, all sporting a blazing yellow paint job. This bold statement paled in comparison to the unveiling of the world's first all-electric British hypercar: the Lotus Evija. As he presented the nearly 2,000 horsepower two-seater to the audience, Phil Popham, CEO of Lotus Cars remarked, "The Evija is a seismic shift for Lotus and signifies the rebirth of one of the UK's most renowned sports car marques. It will act as a halo for the thrilling new range of Lotus performance cars that will follow." Limited to 130 examples, the Evija (pronounced 'E-vi-ya'), means 'the first in existence' or 'the living one.' As Lotus' first hypercar, and its first model with an electrified powertrain, it represents a new chapter for the 71-year-old sports car brand. The Evija is also the first Lotus road car to feature a onepiece carbon-fiber monocoque chassis; the manufacturing 48 slmag.net
process is identical to that of an F1 chassis. Russell Carr, Design Director of Lotus Cars, explained, "We studied how Le Mans race cars use airflow creatively to go over, under and around the vehicle, but also through it. This concept of 'porosity' is key to the Evija and has enabled us to create a timeless design with exceptional amounts of downforce." Motorsport-inspired road car design and technology is expressed throughout, from the Venturi tunnel that pierces each rear quarter to the adjustable race-style seats. To minimize drag, traditional door mirrors are strikingly absent. Cameras integrated into the front wings electronically deploy on unlock, as well as another camera built into the roof. Their images are displayed on three interior screens. Also missing are door handles. The pair of dihedral doors are operated via the key fob. Once in the car, a switch in the roof console closes the doors. The advanced all-electric powertrain was developed in tandem with Williams Advanced Engineering, of Formula One and Formula E fame. The 2,000 kW lithium-ion battery pack is mid-mounted behind the passenger compartment and directs
energy to four e-motors, each producing a peak 493 horsepower. This configuration represents the lightest and most energy-dense electric power package ever fitted to a road car, making Evija the lightest pure electric hypercar ever to go into series production. Torque-vectoring is fully automatic and self-adjusting, so that power is distributed to any combination of two, three, or four wheels within a fraction of a second. ESP stability control ensures safety in all road conditions. Evija clocks the 0-62mph sprint in under three seconds, before going on to a top speed in excess of 200mph. Lotus points out that the car's advanced aerodynamics and four-radiator cooling package keep the battery at an optimum temperature, meaning that the Evija is capable of being driven flat-out with no derate for at least seven minutes in Track mode. A digitally created sound, transmitted via a front-mounted speaker, alerts pedestrians to Evija's presence. Fully charged, the Evija's range is between 250-270 miles. Using existing charging technology, charge time will be 12 mins to 80% and 18 mins to 100%.
The 'floating wing' dashboard is arguably the most striking feature of the cabin, which Carr said was inspired by Lotus' prototype racing cars from the late Fifties and early Sixties. "It reinforces Colin Chapman's cast-iron rule that no Lotus component goes along for a free ride, " added Carr. Carbon fiber shell seats are hand-trimmed with thick Alcantara-finished pads. A thin metal band – engraved with the words 'For The Drivers' – runs centrally through the squab of both. Ahead of the steering wheel is a state-of-the-art digital display, providing the driver with key information. The screen displays essential functions only, with information appearing as required when the appropriate button is pushed, then fading when no longer needed. Further controls are located on the floating 'ski slope-style' center console. Priced from just over $2m, Lotus will offer Evija customers the opportunity to specify the car precisely as they wish, including unique paint finishes, interior trims, and detailing. Designed and engineered in the UK, production is scheduled to begin at Lotus’ Hethel headquarters in 2020. sl slmag.net

Angama Mara immerses guests in all aspects of Kenya's legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve Written and Photographed by Tony Bailey The notion that one could become dinner en route to dinner is not a thought that ever crossed my mind…until my first night at Angama Mara, a luxury safari resort located just a few degrees south of the Equator in the heart of Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve. As a professional photographer, what obviously drew me to Angama Mara were the animals, but what ultimately endeared me to the place was its people, who added an earnest dimension of authenticity to an unapparelled experience. It would be easy for the Fitzgerald family, who opened the resort in 2015, to let the all-inclusive property's picturesque positioning—the very site where some of the most romantic scenes from Out of Africa were filmed—do all of the heavy lifting, but they don't. Beginning with an early morning tray of tea and biscuits delivered to my suite with a smile as warm as dawn's first light, to helping identify constellations and animal calls that ripple the blanket of night, there are certainly no cookie-cutter experiences to be had. With a name inspired by the Swahili word for 'suspended in mid-air,' Angama Mara is cited on a bluff some 1,000 feet over the Maasai Mara, high enough for the two camps of tented guest suites to be at eye level with hot air balloons as they float past at daybreak. 54 slmag.net
A far cry from any tent I've camped in, each suite boasts a 30-footwide, floor-to-ceiling glass wall offering unimpeded "pinch me" views in every direction. Keeping you continuously connected with nature, everything in the spacious studio-style suite is oriented to the aforementioned glass wall, including a soaking tub that promises an indulgent afternoon of ogling. A whistle hanging outside the entrance to each tent serves as a poignant reminder that we are all part of the food chain in this wild place. From dusk to dawn it is used to summon a member of the Maasai tribe who will accompany you as you traverse the property. Connecting the two camps is The Pavilion, which includes a zeroedge swimming pool, a well-equipped fitness room, a safari shop, and a Maasai design studio. Angama Mara staff attended to our group's every need from the moment we deplaned in Nairobi. Following a Kenya Air flight in business class that allowed us to arrive well-rested, we made our way to nearby Wilson Airport for a short and exhilarating AirKenya flight to Angama Mara's private airfield, where a herd of zebras lining the runway served as unofficial greeters. From here, you can opt for a 15-minute walk into camp, or get there a bit quicker via Land Cruiser.
Accommodations at Angama Mara are positioned on a bluff 1,000 feet above Kenya's Great Rift Valley Escarpment.
Luxurious tented guest suites provide breathtaking views.

Governors' Balloon Safaris has been flying over the Maasai Mara since 1972.
As a small lodge, itineraries at Angama Mara are agile and custom-tailored to the interests and abilities of each guest. Daily' Big Five' safaris take place in the acclaimed Mara triangle. Excellent for game viewing year-round, there is an uptick in activity during the great migration, which takes place from July to October. Wilderness walks along the Great Rift Valley are proudly led by members of the Maasai tribe, who share aspects of their ancient and fascinating culture. On select evenings, guests are treated to an energizing pre-dinner demonstration of traditional Maasai dancing. To gain a greater appreciation for the vastness of the landscape and the sheer number of animals who call it home, head up in a hot air balloon. Angama Mara partners with Governors' Balloon Safaris, who has been flying over the Maasai Mara since 1972. The colorful family members who operate the company boast an immense knowledge of the area along with nerves of steel, which were put on display when, at the end of our hour-long adventure, a charging elephant scuttled our intended landing site. The ensuing maneuvers to ensure the safety of both man and beast provided a jolt of adrenaline and a well-deserved champagne toast to our pilot after returning to terra firma.
Before setting out on any safari, guests are encouraged to visit the Angama Mara photo studio for expert photography advice and the opportunity to rent additional camera equipment. For those itching to see their images on something other than a screen, the studio also offers photo printing services. During safari days, lunch is safely staged at a photogenic spot that varies from day-to-day. On more than one occasion curious creatures, including a hyena, expressed an interest in accepting (or commandeering) handouts and were swiftly shooed away without incident. Dinner, which is simply sensational, sometimes spicy, and inspired by what camp chefs might have prepared in the early days of being on safari, can be had in the guest area, under the stars, in the bush or in your tent. Our bush barbeque under the stars was an experience I won't soon forget, as was a lavish champagne brunch at the Kopje, where you can recreate your own Out of Africa moment. Angama Mara grows a fair amount of fruit and vegetables in their one-acre Shamba, or kitchen garden, and the popular Shamba lunch program allows interested guests the opportunity to pick their own ingredients. It is interesting to note that one-third of the menus are designed with vegetarian guests in mind, and their Kenyan chefs can accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions. slmag.net

"Every day, our staff ensure that guest delight is everyone's business, and that kindness, warmth, and love are brought to each one of our guest's stays," said Kate Fitzgerald Boyd. To give back to the community that has given so much to them, the Fitzgerald family established the Angama Foundation, which focuses on three areas of impact: education, healthcare, and conservation. It comes as little surprise that Angama Mara was named #1 Safari Lodge in the World by CondĂŠ Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards 2018. Standing as a silent and solemn testament to the mutual admiration of the hotelier and its guests is a 100-seat chapel erected in memory of co-founder Steve Fitzgerald that opened in December 2018 on what would have been Steve's 65th birthday. The chapel was built in part using donations that poured in from guests hailing from all corners of the globe as word spread of his untimely passing. Steve's daughter Kate, who runs the lodge with
her mother Nicky, says that her father was the heart of Angama Mara. "There is no doubt in my, or anyone else's, mind that Angama Mara simply would not exist without my father having a crazy dream and the courage to see it through almost four years ago," she said. GETTING THERE: In 2018 Kenya Airways began offering direct flights from JFK to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, using the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, sparing travelers an arduous layover in Europe or the Middle East. At present, Kenya Airways is the only carrier offering a direct flight between East Africa and the United States (Kenya-airways.com) AirKenya was the first scheduled air operator into the Maasai Mara more than four decades ago, and they remain the only commercial airline that flies to that region. Outside of their scheduled itinerary, the company also offers charter and scenic helicopter flights from their home base at Kenya's Wilson Airport (airkenya.com). sl slmag.net

The 2019 event, which will take place on November 1st and 2nd at Santa Anita Park in Southern California, marks the tenth time the Breeders’ Cup will be run at this track, which is picturesquely positioned at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Since its inception in 1984, Breeders’ Cup has continued to elevate the lifestyle appeal of horseracing by making the annual weekend event a multi-faceted entertainment experience. The hottest ticket this November is for the newly renovated Trackside Marquee. Situated at the quarter pole (top of the stretch), the 62 slmag.net

Guests will additionally enjoy a luncheon buffet, premium cash bar with cocktail service, private mutual tellers for wagering, and a DJ to keep the energy up between races.

A MUSIC LEGACY Buffalo Soul Presents a Priceless BNB Experience Written by Gloria Houghland / Photographed by Paige Rumore 66 slmag.net
There’s no sign, but the distinctive “Howdy” welcome mat out front confirms that guests have arrived at Buffalo Soul, Music Row’s most discreet Bed and Breakfast. This hidden gem comes in the form of an historic three bedroom, three bath Tudor-style home, located
just steps away from Belmont University at the corner of Villa Place and Wedgewood. With Ionic pillars and stylish arches accenting the home’s elegantly carved limestone exterior, Buffalo Soul speaks to the mid-1920s era in which it was originally built.
slmag.net
67
This artistic Bed and Breakfast enterprise, rooted in the music background of one of its three adventuresome co-founders, was the brainchild of Kasey Hodges who, along with her singer/songwriter/ actor husband, JT, and Todd Baldree, owner of the historic home, music aficionado/serial entrepreneur and consumer of experiences, lovingly named the lodging house, Buffalo Soul. The three of them created this unique experiential bed and breakfast inspired by JT’s story, Todd’s love of music and Kasey’s brand and hosting expertise Dynamic Kasey, who devoted the majority of her career to branding and entertainment marketing while living in Los Angeles, confides that she was lucky enough to meet JT, her spirit animal/ soulmate, at just the right moment. They married and took off like a thunderous herd of animals, never looking back as they headed to Nashville. Once here, it rapidly dawned on Kasey that what was really missing among the crowded bars, honky-tonks and touristfriendly hotels of Nashville were luxury accommodations with an authentic Music City geste. From her branding background, Kasey knew that visitors coming to town wanted an “Instagram” story to tell when they got back home. The lightbulb moment came quickly: “What is more authentic than a husband and wife in the music 68 slmag.net
business welcoming you to enjoy a beautifully restored home,” she mused. “We could share our story, the songwriting process and if, desired, curate an intimate ‘house concert’ with our guests mixing and mingling with JT and three or four of his songwriting buddies or arrange for a private chef or transportation to a bonfire at our 45-acre farm in Leiper’s Fork.” Kasey and JT stampeded straight to owner Todd, to pitch the idea and, voilà, Buffalo Soul was born. The name itself came from JT’s family background. In 1978, his parents, Jim and Marsha, created the first multi-track recording studio in Ft. Worth, Texas and called it Buffalo Sound Studio. “Everything I’ve experienced and achieved, I can trace back to these roots,” explained JT. The southwestern influence is prevalent throughout the home, custom-curated by Misti Fahr of Design Hive, and the underlying music element provides the “soul.” The dining room table is made from the wooden sign formerly posted outside the recording studio and the Buffalo Soul logo is prominently displayed throughout the house from the iron wall plaque that greets guests in the front hall, to the engraved barware, specialty merchandise and abundant bowls of personalized M & M’s. One of the bathrooms even boasts a sporty buffalo wall covering.

Unlike many of the city’s other BNB’s, there is a nary an LED “Nashville” sign nor a map of the city. The music influence is much more subtle. The creative writing spaces are down the staircase where the walls are covered in overlapping vinyl records. The three bedrooms, cleverly named “Room to Roam,” “Room to Run” and “Room to Rest,” are located upstairs, where there is a communal landing. Alternatively, the entire house can be rented, an option creatively called “Room to Relax.” One bedroom wall holds an array of cowboy hats (and, yes, they are available for guests to wear) while another chamber displays antique drum snares. The third boudoir overlooks the private lawn, along with what at first appears to be the outline of a guitar but proves to be interactive, as well. Kasey did her research and knew that the four components of a nurturing, multicultural experience combine water, nature, movement and socialization. All four can be found in this unique oasis. Crepe Myrtles line the expansive lawn while the “sound-hole” of the guitar
is a fire pit with circular seating; the bridge is a brick bench, the neck a splash pad with fret markers while the headstock is a custom-built picnic table with stool seats as tuning pegs. There is also an elevated, outside living space featuring a view of the beautiful fountain and lighting of Belmont University, making for a perfect respite for a secluded interlude or socializing with other guests. “We wanted this place to be more evergreen than the usual tourist visit to Broadway,” explained Kasey. “Buffalo Soul has a mission to put the quality and value back in music for our guests. We offer them the chance to have a private moment with an artist. Our goal has been to provide a space where accommodations could meet music and our plan is to offer another Buffalo Soul experience in Leiper’s Fork in the near future. We want to inspire people through the creativity of this soulful place, as well as continue the legacy for our two daughters, Delta Faye and Charlee Joy. We hope we have created a bigger footprint for all to enjoy.” sl www.buffalosoul.com

ounder and CEO, Brad Morley, has been operating in the food and wine industry for over 25 years. He currently runs and operates several successful wine companies. His business, CANA Wine Company, specializes in bringing fine wines and rare vintages to all corners of the world. Morley’s love for Italian wines may have carried him to visit the famed Italian regions of Piedmont, Montalcino and Maremma, but vineyards with a passionate story are what led him to stay. He spent three months touring over 75 wineries in an effort to focus on importing the best quality, small family productions. While Morley’s eye for detail, paired with his passion for wine continue to paint an indelible mark, he did not stop there. This time around, he wanted to shine light on his local home, Nashville TN. This dream has led to the opening of Nashville Wine Storage, Tennessee’s first licensed wine storage facility. He is so excited to take on this next venture and continue sharing his love for wine with the world.

BOURBON STEAK AT THE JW MARRIOTT NASHVILLE Written by Collins Smith / Photographed by Michael Scott Evans
From the curves of the Cumberland to the green roof of the convention center down Broadway to West End and surveying the entire gulch area, the 34th floor of the JW Marriott captures the majestic beauty of Nashville’s burgeoning development, historic venues and rolling green hills. This spectacular view may be what initially pulls you into Bourbon Steak, the high-end restaurant concept by the Mina Group, but its deliciously creative spin on the traditional steakhouse, the freshest shellfish and seafood Nashville has to offer, arguably the best service anywhere in this city, and the chic atmosphere - not to mention the curated wine list and intelligent cocktail program - will keep you there, and have you returning again and again. Inside Bourbon Steak, the floor-to-ceiling glass is complimented by hues of cream and blue highlighted with bronze details and the sharp modernity of black metal. Distinctly grained, highly polished wood curves along the walls and banquets, while leading you gracefully through the space. The feel is of another era, sublimely brought to the present. Designed by internationally acclaimed hospitality designer Tihany Design, this James Bond-esque attitude meets a luxury cruise ship parked in the sky is a Nashville landmark and culinary destination.

The culinary tour de force behind Bourbon Steak is Michelin starred celebrity chef Michael Mina with executive chef Michael Lishchynsky. Michael Mina first garnered accolades at Aqua in San Francisco. There, he debuted his now infamous Lobster Pot Pie and popularized his eponymous Tuna Tartare, both which he offers on the menu at Bourbon Steak Nashville. Our “goal is to deliver the best quality meats, seafood and produce in innovative ways and to always stay ahead of the curve,” states Chef Lishchynsky. He further delivers that Bourbon Steak is a classic steakhouse with a modern twist. With a refined yet comfortable environment and diverse culinary options, everyone will be able to experience dining at is finest and have an exceptional experience, too. The General Manager Nishaan Chavda, respectfully adds that Lishchynsky “is hungry to prove himself.” With that notion it will not be surprising when the team at Bourbon Steak Nashville will win awards and have a place on the coveted Forbes List. The Lobster Pot Pie, a Michael Mina signature, is a dish that simply can not be missed - the presentation alone will make you feel special - and you will long remember the harmonious balance of brandied cream, perfectly poached whole lobster with the bite of fresh, seasonal vegetables and the savory, flakey crust of puff pastry.

The three-day pastrami-brined beef short rib is placed on a sea of horseradish potato puree with an artful swoosh of tomato hollandaise, cleverly covered in brussel sprout leaves, cupping house-made pickled mustard seeds. For a side, the grilled broccolini exhibits the brighter flavors Bourbon Steak offers. It is caressed with a light, umami sauce topped with roasted cashews. Along with dishes like these, you will find the star of the menu, the steaks. The best cuts sourced from the best purveyors in the world, Chef Lishchynsky stresses that Bourbon Steak is “not an ordinary steakhouse.” What makes them different is each cut is slow poached in a warm bath of house rendered beef tallow, clarified butter, and a cocktail of aromatics. When it reaches the perfect stage of just rare, the steak is grilled over a wood fire of oak, hickory and cherry wood. Accompanied with a trio of sauce and possibly the horseradish crust, the steak is perfection, luxuriously melting into your mouth as each bite is savored. Recent additions to the menu are well constructed and thoughtfully prepared. Case in point - the Caviar Parfait. It is a towering layer of black caviar, creamed egg, smoked salmon, herb-laden crème fraiche resting on a perfect crisp potato latke, then garnished with delicate edible flowers. It is a striking presentation, but not too pretty to take a skillful bite.

Delicate desserts that insist on being triumphant to this sumptuous meal each have a striking presentation fit for kings and queens. The banana tarte tatin with its crispy crust and perfectly fanned banana slices are lovingly served with a silky caramel sauce poured at table. The experience as a whole is one which Bourbon Steak prides itself. Every night a sommelier, namely lead sommelier Shanning Newell, is available to assist each table or single customer with a perfect pairing. Expertly adept with the nuances of fine wine, Newell will be able to suggest the perfect bottle to accompany a meal of steak and seafood. With a dazzling display of over 350 wine bottles in their collection, the list includes the popular varieties of Opus One and the ultra-luxurious offerings of Domaine de la RomanĂŠe-Conti. The cocktail program is exceptional as well. The head bartender Seth Weinberg will ensure you are presented with a perfectly balanced, sophisticated cocktail using vintage spirits or newly established whiskeys and bourbons. Classic tipples are offered or choose an exciting riff of each one. Perched at the far end of the floor with a balcony cantilevered over the skyline, the bar occupies a striking location with its open-air balcony sitting high above the glistening lights of downtown Nashville. The bar menu offers creative dishes as well as the full menu. One extravagant surprise is the house made bratwurst, made of fresh ground dry aged beef complimented with house-made sauerkraut and stone ground mustard. From the first slip of a chilled oyster to the sumptuous vintage burgundy paired with a strip of wagyu, the flavors and aromas offered by Bourbon Steak are a chorus of Vivaldi and Thelonius Monk and, of course, Reba too. The experience is deftly orchestrated by a dedicated staff who will ensure that everything is memorable and rewarding. The trifecta of first-class service awaits you. sl

STANFORD FINE ART EXPANDS WITH NEW CONTEMPORARY GALLERY Written by Gloria Houghland
There is an exciting buzz about town this summer. Stanford Fine Art, the well-known art gallery located in the antique district along Highway 100, has doubled in size, adding a chic, modern space with art to match. According to gallery owner, Stan Mabry, the availability of the space next door gave him the opportunity to do something that he has long envisioned. Stan, a recognized authority on 19th and 20th century art, has collected a treasure trove of modern works but has lacked the appropriate walls to display this collection. The newly opened Stanford Contemporary, directed by Elena Graves, mirrors the existing traditional gallery, but is dedicated to contemporary artwork. Elena, a native Nashvillian with graduate degrees from Vanderbilt and former Director of the Leu Gallery at Belmont, jumped at the chance to be involved with Stanford Contemporary. “Stan and I believe that Nashville has plenty of room for a sophisticated, new gallery. The city is expanding and the people moving here have added to the demand for cutting edge art. We think it’s a fantastic opportunity. The art world is constantly changing, and it is very rewarding to help people find art that resonates with their own sense of style.” Elena added, ”Working with contemporary artists also allows me to help artists have a voice and for them to make a living by sharing a part of themselves and their experience with an audience.” To Stan, “It’s really about the art. We’re very fortunate because we can work with these paintings every day, and we’re always seeing something new. A new bit of information about the artist or about the history of a painting can uncover a new layer in a familiar painting, so we really grow alongside this work as we live with it. That’s an experience that we’d like to see everyone have.” Stan concluded that after nearly forty years in the art business he has been ”very fortunate to work with some great clients in building world class collections,” but adds “we’re just as excited to meet a young collector buying their first painting. Art is an investment in quality of life. We want to make sure we have something that people can love for a lifetime.” Stanford Contemporary will have a grand opening this fall, featuring the work of New York artist Joseph Adolphe, but there is no reason to wait. sl Both galleries are open Monday through Saturday 10:00-5:30 6608 TN-100 Nashville, TN 37205 / 615.352.5050

LIQUOR LAB
An Elevated, Interactive Cocktail Experience Now Open In Downtown Nashville By Genevieve Moore / Photographed by Alyssa Jiosa Cox Where Commerce Street meets 2nd Avenue, you’ll find a newly renovated façade with a double-L logo nestled between the hustle and bustle of downtown establishments. But once you walk inside, stairs take you below street level to a unique world of it’s own. The newly remodeled space adorns chic white walls, state of the art technology and a large footprint that makes you feel worlds away. This location felt instantly perfect as the Liquor Lab team felt this was a wonderful opportunity to create a high-class experience for locals in a spot that they traditionally avoid. President of Manhattan-based Liquor Lab, Owen Meyer, recently opened their second location in Nashville this summer, filling a niche market for experience-centered nights out. While the name speaks for itself, Liquor Lab is far more than simply mixing cocktails. The unique concept combines a hands-on guest experience mixed with interactive education and socializing. When asked what Liquor Lab’s goal is, Meyer laughs and jokingly answers, “To ban the vodka soda!” He then follows by stating, “I would describe our goal to be a company forever dedicated to creating high-class experiences that are for consumers who want to have fun. We will never sacrifice our credibility for any brand and our only goal is to create an experience that makes our guests have a memorable night out.” 94 slmag.net
Throughout the evening, guests delve into the history of the spirit, shake up 3 to 4 cocktails of their own, all while socializing and mingling with fellow guests. “I thought, why not create something that was like a cooking class but for cocktails and then integrate a social element that involves music, different menu themes, and a whole lot of fun,” explains Meyer. Part of the company’s mission is to create a destination that is not a ‘onetime, check the box’ thing to do, especially for the local clientele. Liquor Lab has a different menu every week and the themes of the class span across hundreds of different nights, options include: Margarita & Tacos, BBQ and Bourbon, and specialty nights where guests can dive deeper into things like Japanese spirits. This is a new and innovative way to enjoy craft cocktails and even try something new, with a world-class bartender team at the helm. The Liquor Lab bartender team is comprised of some of the best in the business like their CCO (Chief Cocktail Officer) Freddie Sarkis, as well as former Diageo Mixology Master, Elayne Duff, and former Hendricks National Ambassador, Jim Ryan. This will be a cocktail lovers one-stop-shop for everything involving drinks to learning about the history of spirits, to, of course, enjoying beer, wine, and cocktails. sl Book your seat or inquire about private events by visiting www.liquorlabnashville.com

DECEPTION CUES YOU CAN COUNT ON By Scott Rouse
The question I’m asked most often is “How can I tell if someone is lying to me?” People are fascinated by that. And for good reason. So I’ve put together a short list of five deception cues you can count on. It’s important to keep in mind that there are no “absolutes” in body language. Especially when it comes to deception. In other words, just because someone scratches their nose doesn’t mean for sure they’re lying, etc. Having said that, know that this list is based on science and research as well as the deception indicators most often seen out in the wild. 1: NOT BREAKING EYE CONTACT Most people are under the impression a liar will break eye contact when lying to you. That’s incorrect. The liar will most likely continue looking you right in the eye during and after the lie. Why? For two reasons – First, they know most believe liars break eye contact. Second, they want to watch you to see if they detect the slightest hint of doubt. If so, they will add qualifiers to reinforce and strengthen the lie. 2: NOT ACTUALLY ANSWERING THE QUESTION The liar may answer with something that sounds close to a real answer. However, it will be missing that key information you asked about. The answer may actually change the entire subject and direction of the conversation if you’re not paying attention. 3: INVOKING RELIGION WHEN ANSWERING Quite often you’ll here someone answer with something similar to “I swear to God it was not me.” Or: “My Lord says ‘Don’t lie or cheat, it just comes back to you.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t need to swear to, or on, anything when I’m answering a question. Unless I’m in court being sworn in. They may go as far as showing you their prayer list or a Bible they carry in their pocket. If they were that religious, they wouldn’t feel the need to do or say anything about it. They would just answer your question. 104 slmag.net
4: NOT USING CONTRACTIONS This is one of my favorites. When using contractions a person will say “won’t” instead of “will not,” “Didn’t” instead of “did not”. If you ask “Did you take money out of my purse?” and they answer “No, I did not”, they are not using a contraction. What’s the problem with that? It sounds weird. Nobody talks like that. Robots? Maybe. If you asked me if I wanted to go to Arby’s and I said “No, I do not.” that would sound odd. I would say “No thanks, I had Arby’s yesterday”. My answers wouldn’t sound like I’ve been practicing them in my head without saying them out loud. Listen for the answers you ask for. They shouldn’t sound like the person just learned the language they’re speaking. 5 REVERSED YES AND NO HEAD SHAKE On YouTube, watch Lance Armstrong’s depositions. Focus on the “yes or no” questions he’s asked and you’ll see something very peculiar with his body language. He sometimes shakes his head “no” when he is answering “yes.” The same thing happens at times when he shakes his head “yes” when answering “no.” We now know those answers were lies. Lance tried to hide the fact he was lying, but his sub-conscience gave him away. This is one you’ve really got to pay attention to. Because most of the time it isn’t the person who is vigorously shaking their head “yes” while saying “No”. It’s the person who is still and saying “yes” while their head, just ever so slightly, shakes “no.” It’s almost imperceptible sometimes. So you really have to watch for it. There you have it. A list of 5 deception cues you can count on. Most likely, you’ll see at least two of the five today and all five by the end of the week. They are subtle, and sometimes tough to see and hear. So begin paying extra attention to the answers to every question you ask. You’ll be surprised at what you see and hear. sl Is there anything specific you’d like to ask me or would like me to cover next time? What if you and I could have coffee and you could ask me anything you wanted? What would you ask me? Let me know at ScottRouse@ScottRouse.com. Cocktails and a generous buffet, both Mexican and American, greeted the patrons upon arrival to this amazing step back in time evening of Art Deco and Mexican Modernism Art.

2019 Conservancy Gala Kick-Off
On a somewhat steamy and muggy July evening, Steve Sirls and Allen DeCuyper opened their historic West End home and gardens for the official kick-off for the 2019 Conservancy Gala. The Gala takes place on Saturday, November 2nd, a black-tie fundraiser benefiting the Parthenon and Centennial Park. Re-launching the theme “Then & Now” looking at the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition that put our city’s park on the 6 map. Then & Now: Havana Nights, is this years theme weaving Cuban elements throughout the evening. The Gala is never a disappointment, always an unforgettable evening in our Centennial Park.

4th of July Whitland Avenue For 42 years, Whitland Avenue has proven, in spades, that there is more to Independence Day celebrations than only fireworks. This historic West Nashville neighborhood was the host to a symphonic performance of patriotic music, a family-style 4th picnic, of course the parade consisting of kids, dogs, adults. A most Patriotic 4th, Whitland Avenue Style! Note, 42 years ago the original festivities were held on the front shaded lawn belonging to Pat and Dan Burton, yes I was there! God Bless America, land that I love!

40th L’ Ete’ du Vin Grand Wine Auction Taste the history, savor the wine, find the cure, the 40th anniversary celebration of America’s longest-running charity wine auction, L’ Ete’ du Vin. What started 40 years ago as a backyard summer wine tasting, has become the largest wine fundraising event in the country to fight cancer. This year alone, over $1.1 million was raised during the week-long celebration. The Grand Auction was held at the JW Marriott Hotel. Winemakers from across the world have attended this annual event over the last four decades. This year, the Grand Auction Committee welcomed Carlton McCoy of Napa Valley’s Heitz Cellar and Francois Servin of Domaine Marcel Servin of Chablis. These winemakers and their wine represent a wonderful combination of beloved old and new world wines.
