From the Publisher
I’ve been publisher of Sophisticated Living Chicago magazine for exactly six months, and there’s one thing I’ve come to know without a doubt: Tis market has a lot to ofer the discriminating consumer. I’m absolutely energized by the dynamic people and brands that I’ve gotten to know over the course of launching our frst issue. It’s almost as if I’ve uncovered a secret. You see, after leaving New York and my former post as vice president of marketing for NBC Universal, I’ve spent the last decade as a stay-at-home Chicagoan, raising my family: three adorable children under the age of 8 with my always supportive husband, Jon. Let’s just say, jumping back into the workforce after a nine-year hiatus from the corporate media bustle has been a lesson in patience and perseverance, and it has literally taken a village (thank you, family!) to allow me to get back out there and do what I love. And love it I do. My days are spent exploring the city and its myriad oferings, meeting with true entrepreneurs. And I get to do it with a dear friend, and a woman I greatly admire—my editor, Elise Hofer Shaw. Elise has tapped into her 15 years of magazinemaking experience to give our book its unique Chicago look and feel. From in-depth home design and fne dining features to fashion, art, culture and more, all is tailored to appeal to our jet-setting, trendsetting readers. And with every great product launch comes a fantastic unveiling! I would personally like to say a very special thank you to our party partners Paramount Events, Platinum Events and Crafthouse Cocktails. We can’t wait to fete our frst issue with you in style high above the Mag Mile at Te Ritz-Carlton Residences—the very spot where we photographed our spectacular inaugural cover. At Sophisticated Living Chicago, we are fortunate to partner with some of the best of the best in their respective industries, and look forward to sharing the fruits of their creativity with you six times a year. Now sit back, relax and soak up all of the beauty that Sophisticated Living represents. We couldn’t be prouder to be your new cofee table staple.

From the Editor-In-Cheif What a diference an afternoon makes. One minute I’m having lunch with my friend of 20-plus years at the Pump Room, and the next thing I know I’m grabbing the editorial reins for Sophisticated Living magazines’ new Chicago publication. I think I’d had about two bites of my roasted carrot salad before I had said yes. Mind you it wasn’t a difcult decision to make. I was already a fan of the existing titles under the SL umbrella (Louisville, Lexington, Nashville, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Arizona and Columbus)—the thick and glossy paper stock, alluring photography and expertly curated content boasting page-turning features you can really sink your teeth into. As for my lunch companion that day, well, let’s just say it’s a bonus to be working with Publisher Erica Conaty Goldman, whom I know is as passionate about making beautiful magazines as I am. For the launch issue, our cover was as important to us as the engaging editorial that would follow. For maximum impact, we decided upon a head-turning look by Salvatore Ferragamo Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti. Te marmot and Astrakhan vest was love at frst sight, and once we anchored the look with Roberto Coin baubles and bangles from C.D.Peacock and added a backdrop courtesy of Te Ritz-Carlton Residences, the rest was, as they say, history. So go ahead, judge our book by its cover. We do. Next, settle in with our eight-page feature on Tru restaurant. Writer Joel Hoglund ordered the royal treatment at the four-star, world-renowned restaurant: Executive Chef Anthony Martin’s 12-course, progressive French tasting menu (think Russian and Italian caviars delicately dolloped on sculptural red coral and white asparagus ice cream). Complete with James Beard Award-winning service in a space that’s speckled with awe-inspiring works of art, Martin’s mouthwatering masterpiece is not to be missed this holiday season. Our luxe launch issue also captivates with Chicago’s coolest fashion and jewelry news, buzzed about beauty happenings, elite travel destinations for sun-seekers and much, much more for your perusing pleasure. I, for one, am smitten with our 10-page home feature that showcases a spectacular new-construction, single-family home behind Lincoln Park 2550. Owners Tanya and Luca Franco have raised the bar on contemporary Chicago living with their 5,000-square-foot dwelling—and having access to all of the amenities ofered at the Lucien Lagrange-designed high-rise (pool, spa, theater, billiards room, manicured gardens and more) is an enviable perk. Last but not least, I’m excited to introduce our recurring philanthropy column. In each issue, we will be spotlighting a worthy organization that’s changing lives across Chicagoland. First up: Lake Forest’s Equestrian Connection. Helping people with special needs by connecting them with horses through programs like hippotherapy, therapeutic riding, art therapy, massage therapy and job skills training, Equestrian Connection has quickly become a charity that’s close to our hearts. From all of us at Sophisticated Living Chicago, happy holidays and enjoy the frst issue. You’ve earned it.

Contributors “My favorite room in the house is by far the kitchen,” says contributing writer Amalie Drury, who wrote this issue’s feature on the Francos’ new construction, single-family home on a lot adjacent to Lincoln Park 2550. “It’s almost blindingly white and clean, like stepping into a slice of chef-quality heaven. And on nice days, it’s amazing to have the option to open up that entire room to the terrace for true indoor/outdoor living.” Drury is the Chicago editor of PureWow.
Contributing writer Brian Dukerschein didn’t need to be asked twice to revisit one of his favorite men’s suiting shops: Frederick Lynn Haberdasshere. “Every time I meet with owner Aaron Comes, I’m impressed by his passion for his business,” says Dukerschein. “Tis is a guy who truly cares about getting his customers into suits that are fattering and well made. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he’s just an all-around great guy.”
“I don’t like to take pictures of my food,” says contributor Joel Hoglund, who wrote this issue’s story on lauded progressive French restaurant Tru. “But when one of our fantastic servers presented a beautifully dressed whole duck to our table, I had to make an exception. I’ve been showing that photo like a proud papa anytime someone mentions a restaurant, or food in general really—any excuse to reminisce about the pièce de résistance of an all-around extraordinary dining experience at Tru.”
Tasked with penning this issue’s beauty page, contributing writer Korey Huyler headed to Soho House’s Cowshed spa for an afternoon of all-natural treatments. “I love the luxurious yet rustic environment—comfy gray pedicure chairs and personal television sets,” says Huyler, a Chicago-based freelance writer who can often be spotted dining with friends on the House’s West Loop roof.
“I was blown away by Frederick Lynn Haberdasshere’s River North space. It was hard to choose where to shoot because every inch is handsomely appointed with rows of silk ties and fabric swatches,” says photographer Maria Ponce Berre, who shot the subject of this issue’s men’s fashion page, owner Aaron Comes. “Aaron was meticulous with not only the merchandising of the store, but the way he dressed.” Ponce Berre has shot numerous celebs, including Sophia Bush, Joe Manganiello and Common.
“Chef Anthony’s dishes are some of the most delicate and colorful that I have come across,” says seasoned photographer Anthony Tahlier, who photographed Tru restaurant’s Executive Chef and Partner Anthony Martin and his culinary creations for this issue’s food feature. “Te presentation is extremely photogenic.” Tahlier lives in Elmwood Park with his wife Andrea, sons Gus and Avett, and their Boston terrier Marvin.

Obscure White Grapes to Try When choosing a wine, it is easy to pick from the tried and true. On average, most of the wines we try are the grapes we know, the so-called international grapes: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and the list goes on. Tese are grapes that originally hail from France, or at least have been popularized by that country through California and planted throughout North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Tese grapes have even pervaded countries like Italy and Spain, who have treasure troves of their own indigenous grapes. While these are some of the best grapes to make wine with, there are more, many more. A recently published book lists more than 1,300 vine varieties that make wine in the world; Italy alone is a hot bed of indigenous varieties with over 500. Tere has been a movement in the last few decades to preserve and even seek out indigenous grapes and make delicious and unique wines from them. It is a very good thing to produce wines with such character, as diversity in wine is one of its many strengths. At least for me, if I had to drink wine produced from only international grapes, it would become monotonous. You can travel far when exploring the world of obscure and unique grapes. For example, when I was in Lombardy, Italy, we visited a Franciacorta winery named Majolini. Majolini produces 350 magnums (the equivalent of 700 bottles) of wine from a grape only they have planted called Majolina. While this wine was certainly very interesting, I wanted to be sure that the obscure grapes I wrote about our readers could fnd. Terefore, while they are still obscure, you should be able to find the following wines at better wine shops or on a thoughtful wine list, many of which are quite afordable. Te Coda Di Volpe grape is from Italy’s Campania region. Te grape Coda Di Volpe dates from at least Roman times. Te name given by Pliny means “tail of the fox” and refers to the shape of the grape clusters. One could write an article just on the indigenous grapes of the Southern Italian region of Campania, which in my mind make some of the fnest white wines in all of Italy. Te leader in the region is the Mastroberardino family, who is famous for preserving the native grapes of Campania, and diferent branches of the family own the Terredora Di Paolo and Mastroberardino wineries. Tis wine is dry and crisp with favors of citrus, quince, and white fowers; it is medium-bodied, fresh and enchanting. Suggested wine and producer: Coda Di Volpe Terredora Di Paolo, Campania 2012.
Written by Scott Harper, Master Sommelier
Te Colombard grape is from France’s Gascony region. It is certainly possible you have tasted Colombard without knowing it, as it is used in making the French brandies Armagnac and Cognac, as well as bulk ordinary wine in California’s typically named French Colombard. Native to Southwest France and the land of D'Artignan, this grape makes quality value wine. Tis example is dry with the favors of apple, peach, pear, and citrus; all in a light body that is vibrant, crisp and fresh. The name of this producer is Mont Gravet – Mont refers to the hills and Gravet refers to the oval shape rocks of the area, which is depicted on the label. Suggested wine and producer: Colombard, Cotes de Gascogne Mont Gravet 2013. Te Viura Grape is from Spain’s Rioja region. From the Rioja region of Spain, which is widely known for great red wine, comes this white wine. Incidentally, many wine drinkers don’t realize the region makes white wine and rosé alongside its famous red wines. Tis wine region is located in Northeastern Spain and named after the River Rio Oja. Outside of the region of Rioja, the grape is called Macabéo, especially in Catalonia, where it is part of the blend for the sparkling wines of Cava. Te winery has a long history dating to 1879 and is still run by the same family fve generations later. Dry, medium-bodied and tasty with the favors of green apple, melon, lemon, and zesty minerality. Suggested wine and producer: Viura, Rioja Blanco Cune “Monopole” 2013 . Te Verdicchio grape is from Italy’s Marche’s region. The Verdicchio grape is named for its green-colored berries, or in Italian, verdi. It is noted as one of the few Italian grapes that can stand up to oak but ironically rarely is. Hailing from the region of Marche, which is located in east-central Italy on the Adriatic. Basically it comes from two areas within Marche: Matelica or Castelli Di Jesi. Matelica is known for a touch more body. Very dry, light and crisp with the favors of limestone minerals, straw, lemon zest, white peach and apple. Its color is pale yellow. Trough the early 1990’s Beatrice Lucangeli and Stefano Aymerich di Laconi transformed their estate, improving the quality of their vineyards and wine production. Suggested wine and producer: Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi Classico “Villa Torre” Tenuta di Tavignano 2013. sl

Curating a Lifestyle: Make Room for Mocha
Written by Amelia and Jef Jefers
Tis group of mochaware includes forms, designs and colors commonly used in production. Te pitchers and bowls shown here range in auction value from $300 - $900 each, with larger items commanding a higher price point.
With motifs known as “earthworm” and “seaweed” and an earthy color palette of brown, yellow, blue, green and buff, antique mochaware seems more a product for the organically focused 21st century than the 18th and 19th century ceramics market from which it was born. In its creation, English pottery makers of the period (looking for fresh ideas and simpler manufacturing methods) bucked design trends and found inspiration in nature. At the time, Tomas Chippendale’s book “Te Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director” had a frm hold on the buying habits of an aristocratic audience eager to posit themselves as regal and sophisticated in the face of a stunning loss to a fedgling nation across the pond. Chippendale’s designs were luxurious, bold and elaborate. A minimalist approach to designing interiors that refected the natural world and humble technique was not embraced until several decades later, when William Morris and his peers led the Arts and Crafts movement. Simply said, mochaware (also known simply as “mocha”) producers were truly ahead of their time. Mochaware is a general term for utilitarian kitchenware, first made in Staffordshire, England in the late 18th century that gained popularity by about 1830. Ceramic bowls, pitchers, pepper pots (as shakers are known to our British friends) and other items were lathe-turned; dipped into a mixture of water, clay and pigment (known as “slip”); and hand-decorated, most notably with bands of color and designs resembling the mukha (mocha) stone for which it is named. Imported through Mukha (a port in Yemen), moss agate was known as “mocha stone” to English artisans who valued the rich color and interesting natural designs: random patterns of impurities resembling the eponymous creatures and plants for which mochaware motifs are named. “Earthworm” mocha includes a thick, squiggly line of color circumventing the waist of
34 slmag.net
a ceramics piece. “Seaweed” items are decorated with tendrils of color emanating from a single trunk, repeated either vertically or horizontally. “Cat’s eye” decoration is marked by circular forms incorporating marbled colors within. The beauty and timeless style of mocha belies the simplicity and economy with which it was made. Decorative patterns were achieved through a chemical reaction between dyes and slip, creating complex designs in a production process both efficient and quick. At the time it was made, mocha was an inexpensive alternative to more gentrified pottery and porcelain. As a result of its utilitarian nature, it is available today in short supply - and fnding pieces in pristine condition is quite rare. Identifying an antiques dealer who specializes in mochaware is wise, although better antiques auction houses often include examples among Americana oferings. Collectors should expect to pay top dollar for pieces with exceptional coloration or design and without damage or repair, so if you are drawn to the simple elegance and warm palette of mocha, buy with a forgiving eye to a little restoration. Smaller and common forms, especially bowls, are the most affordable options, while mugs and large pitchers can command thousands of dollars each. Exploring mocha designs is made simple through websites like Pinterest, where several boards are devoted to the topic. Tose prone to wanderlust may choose to see frsthand the magnifcent collections at the Shelburne or Winterthur Museums. As styles shift to refect a greater interest in antiques, as well as nature, now is the time to invest in the timeless appeal of antique mochaware. sl Amelia and Jef Jefers are the co-owners of Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers, an international frm located outside Columbus, Ohio.
A wide variety of mochaware forms, colors and designs are represented on this 19th century shelf, with values ranging from $300 - $2,500 each. Colors favored among collectors are pumpkin, blue and green; particularly when used in combination with high contrast hues that highlight bold decoration.

Te Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation Written by Bridget Williams Calling to mind turn-of-the-century Craftsman and Adirondack styles of architecture with an exterior defned bystacked feldstone walls and chimneys, stained wood cedar shingle siding and painted wood trim and windows, the lodge serves as the centerpiece and social hub of the 35-acre resort. Rustic fair pervades the interiors, with slate foors, vaulted beam ceilings, soaring stone freplaces and panoramic windows with sweeping lake views. Tere are a total 251 guestrooms onsite, including 33 892-square feet club level rooms; one 2,392-square-foot Ritz-Carlton suite; six twoand three-bedroom golf cottages ranging in size from 1,800-2,400 square feet; and the 5,400-square-foot Presidential Suite, which is actually a lakefront house adjacent to the lodge with four master suites and its own heated outdoor pool. Situated in rural Central Georgia and within close proximity to a number of single stoplight towns whose sleepy Main Streets boast the standard sprinkling of antique shops and mom and pop-style diners, the sprawling golf resort and luxury home community that comprises Reynolds Plantation sits directly on the banks of Lake Oconee, a 40 slmag.net
reservoir created in 1979 with the completion of the Wallace Dam. Originally a beloved 10,000-acre hunting, fshing and timber plantation established by Mercer Reynolds, Sr. in the 1920s, the current ownership group has continued the Mercer family’s commitment to providing top-notch amenities in a painstakingly preserved rural environment. Shot of hole #18 on Te Oconee course with the lodge in the background.
While the entire resort is family and pet-friendly, the twobedroom cottages are particularly suited for traveling with children, with plenty of elbowroom for everyone and just a two-minute stroll from the lodge. In-room amenities across all categories are top-notch and beftting a Ritz-Carlton property that has been bestowed with the AAA Five Diamond Award consecutively the past six years. For an even more luxurious experience, Club Level rooms and suites offer continuous culinary oferings throughout the day in the elegantly appointed club lounge as well as access to a dedicated concierge. With 300-miles of shoreline and more fish per square acre than any lake in Georgia, including large mouth bass, bream, catfsh, crappie and striped bass hybrids, Lake Oconee is a fisherman’s paradise. Just steps from the resort’s infinity edge lakefront pool is a sandy beach and watersports program, complete with paddleboards, kayaks, wake-boarding, knee boarding, jet ski and pontoon rentals (if you rent one of the latter and are feeling spunky, be sure to ask for directions to the “jumping rock”). The resort has access to a pair of fullservice marinas ofering dry dock storage, marina stores with fshing and boating supplies and dockside fueling. During the summer months there are lakeside concerts and freworks; iceskating is ofered from late November through mid-February in a dedicated 5,500-square-foot rink. Popular with young and old alike are the nightly bonfres and s’mores by the lake, which take place just outside Georgia’s Bistro restaurant. 42 slmag.net
Drier pursuits for the active minded encompass horseback riding; a gun club with skeet, trap and clay shooting; five miles of onsite walking and hiking trails; Segway tours; a comprehensive exercise facility with indoor lap pool; and, access to eight tennis courts. The waters of Lake Oconee are certainly a draw, but what Reynolds Plantation is known for is golf, and lots of it. Interwoven amongst the towering oaks, fragrant magnolias and fowering dogwoods are 99 holes of championship-caliber golf designed by top architects of the game: Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio and Bob Cupp. An increasingly rare enhancement, the resort’s fve golf courses ofer golf caddie services – providing hole descriptions and yardage, spotting golf balls, raking bunkers, attending the fagstick and ofering green reads. With a few rare exceptions, golf can be enjoyed at the resort year-round. The onsite Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation offers the ultimate in club fitting services, swing analysis and on-site construction of customized clubs provided by the very same Taylor Made-certified experts that service professional golfers. Instructor Charlie King of the Reynolds Golf Academy is consistently listed on Golf Digest’s ranking of the 50 best teachers. For those seeking to unwind before or after an active day or wanting refuge from an overactive existence, the 26,000-square foot spa, located in its own building adjacent to the lodge, offers more than 90 health and wellness treatments, many of them utilizing ingredients indigenous to the area, via 19 private

The facility also features male and female relaxation areas with lockers and changing facilities, an indoor lap pool, saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, a relaxation terrace, a full-service salon and a spa boutique with an area specifically allocated to locally-made soaps and bath products. Playing hard works up quite an appetite, and there are several unique venues on property for dining and cocktails. As soon as I sat down at my lakeview table at Georgia’s Bistro, located on the ground floor of the lodge, I was tempted with an artisan breadbasket accompanied by lavender-infused honey, Vidalia onion spread and salted butter. Te menu is full of Southern fare, from fried green tomatoes to shrimp and grits, and a host of inventive moonshine cocktails. For the adventurous or the undecided, order the special “Chef ’s Surprise” entrée. You’ll only be given the price and the recommended temperature (when applicable). Situated poolside and lakefront and offering a “come as you are atmosphere”, signature cocktails and a wide range of casual cuisine to savor al fresco, Gaby's by the Lake is perennially packed during the warmer months. For a more intimate outdoor lakefront dining experience, Chiminea dining provides a threecourse meal for two in front of a personal bonfre. Open Wednesday through Sunday for lunch, dinner and cocktails, Linger Longer Steakhouse, located in the Oconee Golf Course Clubhouse, offers a contemporary menu of American
steakhouse classics complemented by an extensive wine list with a focus on reds from around the world. Perhaps it was the blueberryinfused cocktails that made me do it, but following a perfectly prepared peppercorn-encrusted steak, I ordered the bread pudding with white chocolate ice cream for dessert and had zero regrets. It was followed by an encore of puffy pink cotton candy and a directive from our server to “linger longer”. While there are certainly no shortage of activities and amenities on property to keep one amply busy, day trips to charming, historic small towns including Greensboro, Madison and Washington beckon with unique shopping and dining opportunities. A slice of buttermilk pie at Te Yesterday Café in Greensboro (theyesterdaycafe.com) is the stuf of local legend and not to be missed! Parents seeking to treasure hunt in peace can take advantage of the full- and half-day oferings available through the Ritz Kids children’s program, where their little ones will be kept busy with activities developed in partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society. Maserati Centennial International Gathering Held in September, the Maserati Centennial International Gathering marked a key event in the celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Modena-based company. Te frst day of the ofcial program involved over 200 Maseratis and over 500 Maserati collectors and clients from 30 countries across the world. Vintage and modern Maseratis began making their way into Modena in the early hours, lining up in Piazza Grande in the shadow of the Ghirlandina, the white stone bell tower that is the symbol of the Emilian city. Piazza Grande was also the venue for the meeting between Maserati CEO Harald Wester and the Mayor of Modena, Gian Carlo Muzzarelli, who ofcially welcomed the participants to the city. Also on hand were direct descendants of the founders of Maserati: Carlo and Alferi Maserati, the sons of Ettore and Ernesto Maserati respectively, who in December 1914 set out on an adventure with their brother Alferi. "Of the many automobile producers born in Italy in the last century, only a few have reached such a milestone 44 slmag.net
and this flls me with joy," declared Alferi Maserati. "Te name we bear symbolizes brilliance, innovation and the desire to create the unique and novel features we fnd in today's cars." The first day of the Gathering ended with a guided tour and dinner at the company’s historic factory in Viale Ciro Menotti, Modena. After a lengthy parade through the city’s streets, involving more than 200 classic and modern Maseratis and the majority of Modena’s population, gathering participants enjoyed a guided tour of the complex that Maserati has occupied since it moved from Bologna to Modena in 1939, and where the Maserati GranTurismo, GranCabrio and Alfa Romeo 4C are now produced. These same production lines provided the striking location for a very unusual dinner during which guests were entertained by singers from the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation. Te bond between Maserati and Luciano Pavarotti was always very strong on both sides – the great Tenor’s frst Maserati was a bright blue Sebring,

which he purchased in 1963 – and it still continues today thanks to his widow Nicoletta Mantovani, who was present at the dinner. The second day of the Gathering commenced with the start of the regularity competition and transfer of more than 200 Maseratis taking part to the historic San Martino del Lago circuit near Cremona. Te circuit is just a short distance from the straight stretch of road on which Baconin Borzacchini set the first world record in Maserati’s history on September 28, 1929, at the wheel of the 16-cylinder Maserati V4, a record that stood for eight years. Te day ended with a gala dinner hosted by Maserati CEO Harald Wester at the Reggia di Venaria Reale, the royal palace on the outskirts of Turin built by Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy in 1675. Together with Maserati collectors, clients and guests, the dinner was also attended by Fiat Chrysler Group Chairman John Elkann and Fiat Chrysler Group CEO and Maserati Chairman Sergio Marchionne, who declared that, “Maserati will never be a

giant. It will never be the biggest producer of automobiles in the world but it will be, simply, the best”. Te third and fnal day of the Centennial Gathering was focused around Turin, with the fnal section of the regularity competition and the climb to the majestic Basilica of Superga, the historic 300-year-old church that towers over the city. Participants and press then toured Maserati’s newest factory, the Avv. Giovanni Agnelli plant in Grugliasco, where the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte are built. Tey then drove their cars to the heart of Turin to line the areas surrounding the Piazza San Carlo in the heart of the city for the Concours d’Elegance fnale. Piazza San Carlo was packed with thousands of owners, media, fans and employees when the ‘Best of Show’ was awarded to a Maserati Mexico 4200 Prototype Frua, with the Maserati A6 GCS/53 from the Panini collection also receiving a special award from the judges. A 1954 Jaguar D-Type owned by Peter Neumark was named Best in Show.
The annual Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elégance saw a host of exquisite vehicles competing for the coveted ‘Best in Show’ award. Chief Judge for the day was Derek Bell MBE and from one British legend to another it was a 1954 Jaguar D-Type owned by Peter Neumark that was awarded the top prize. Coincidentally, the D-Type celebrates its 60th birthday this year. A Delahaye Type 235 MS Coupé by Chapron garnered the People’s Choice award. Te inaugural Salon Privé Sale launched earlier this year in partnership with Silverstone Auctions was a thrilling sale with an excess of £10 million. Highlights included a world-record sum for the rare 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder which sold for £2.27 million, a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L Lusso which sold for £1.89 million including the buyer’s premium and an elegant 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback which fetched £954,500 including the buyer’s premium. Porsche 911 prices continue to rise with a 1973 Porsche 911 S Targa, part of the Henry Pearman collated ‘Stradale’ Collection, selling for £195,500, more than £80,000 over its lower estimate. A piece of motoring history, Range Rover chassis number 001, sold for a premium inclusive £132,250. Commenting on the results, Nick Whale, Managing Director of Silverstone Auctions, said: “We’re delighted with the results from our frst sale at Salon Privé. Some of the prices paid for particular cars are truly staggering and hope that both buyers and vendors alike are as happy as we are.” Te British Supercar Lawn impressed with highlights including the one-of Ferrari F12 TRS, a trio of LaFerraris, a Pagani Huayra, McLaren P, Bugatti Veyron, and the latest models from Lamborghini, Maserati, McLaren, Koenigsegg, Overfnch, BMW and Tesla, among many others. Paradise Found
Island idyll is easily attainable on Jumby Bay in Antigua Written by Bridget Williams
50 slmag.net
At one time or another, most of us have pondered the notion of inhabiting a deserted island; most likely when prompted by an inquiring mind asking you to consider what three things you’d bring with you. While the concept holds a certain vaguely romantic appeal, the reality – fnding food, clothing, shelter, water and the like – is an endeavor best reserved for a handful of die-hard survivalists or those seeking their 15 minutes of fame on reality television. Te most ideal option, in my humble opinion, is to luxuriate on a fully stafed private island, which can ofer the illusion and sometimes the reality of complete privacy, without the need to fashion crude clothing from palm tree fronds or fgure out how to crack open a coconut.

One such piece of paradise is Jumby Bay: A Rosewood Resort, a 300-acre private enclave situated just two miles from the coast of Antigua in the West Indies. After landing at V.C. Bird International Airport, a simple three-minute car ride followed by a seven-minute cruise on a private catamaran carries you to a state of mind that is worlds away. While there are a total of 40 rooms that comprise the legendary all-inclusive Five-Diamond resort, the most ideal way to experience the vast array of amenities is to take things up a notch by letting a privately owned estate home. At the pinnacle of these exclusive oferings is Lazy Lizard, a $40 million property that was unveiled in October 2013. With more than 18,000 square feet, six bedrooms, six en-suite baths and one guest bath, this one-of-a-kind beachfront enclave offers a resort-within-aresort experience. Located near the resort’s Estate House, a circa 1830 classical colonial home and garden that was once the centerpiece of the island’s sugar plantation and is now home to Jumby Bay’s elegant fine dining restaurant, only the steeply pitched roofline of the buildings that comprise the fve-acre Lazy Lizard compound are visible from the road. As our golf cart made its way down the drive, the dense tropical landscaping belied the newness of its 52 slmag.net
installation. Members from our team of personal staff, which included a butler, private chef and housekeeper, greeted us at the entrance pavilion with warm, wide smiles. Overseen by renowned local architect Andrew Goodenough, the Caribbean- and Asian-influenced compound was designed with entertaining in mind with the eight pavilions that comprise the contemporary kitchen, living, dining, and media rooms and guest suites oriented around a freeform swimming pool so vast it could amply accommodate all of the island’s hotel guests. Te property also includes its own private beach, food-lit tennis court and ftness center. As fate would have it, I was lucky enough to room in one of a pair of identical 2,000-square-foot master suites that fank the central pavilion. Te sprawling space was made to feel even larger via intricate patterning of the cerused wood planks that adorned the steeply pitched ceiling. Te décor was primarily comprised of variegated shades of blue on the upholstery, walls and accessories. When considered with the limestone fooring, the combination mimicked the surrounding seascape visible everywhere I looked. Adjacent to the en-suite bath, sliding doors led outside to a walled open-air garden oasis whose pièce de résistance was a deep soaking tub carved from a single piece of ivory travertine.

Not wanting to leave any island experience on the table during my brief sojourn, I opted to save the al fresco bubble bath for après dinner and took the wheel of one of two golf carts reserved for Lazy Lizard guests and set out to explore the island. Te frst stop was the theatre kitchen at Te Verandah Restaurant, where Chef Jonathan was leading a scheduled cooking class. Trained in France at Michelin-starred restaurants, he imparted a wealth of information on global cuisine and preparation methods as well as his favorite of-island haunts (Devil’s Bridge near Indian Town Point and rainforest zip line tours were among his top recommendations). Serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, the casually elegant open-air Verandah Restaurant and Bar is the island’s hub of activity and the unofcial clubhouse of island home and villa owners. After laying claim to a cushioned chaise under a thatched umbrella, I headed to the watersports area to unleash my inner adolescent with a go at tubing, followed by paddle boarding and snorkeling in the tranquil azure waters of Jumby Bay. Te comprehensive watersports program includes the aforementioned activities as well as water skiing, kayaking, windsurfng, sailing
and weekly morning snorkeling trips to nearby Bird Island. My fortuitous state of afairs continued as I returned to the comfort of my chaise just as the beach attendants were making their daily afternoon rounds to ofer sun-baked guests a frozen confection. I returned to Lazy Lizard to find preparations underway for our private dinner to be staged in the pool’s dining pavilion, which is surrounded on all four sides by water and accessed by a Japanese footbridge. Guests of Lazy Lizard have access to the services of private chef Sarah Wong, who has spent the past few winter seasons in Antigua and summers in Italy working at the Michelin restaurant Andreini. As the fnal remnants of a fery sunset were gobbled up by the horizon, the staf lit torchères and candles along the path to the dining pavilion. We walked in time to the beat of a steel drum band, whose members had rolled up their pant legs in order to play instruments situated in the shallow waters of the pool’s sunbathing ledge. Te dinner was an epicurean extravaganza and a definite “must-do” for those renting an estate home. Te following morning I selected a bicycle from the stand near the entrance to the estate for a short ride to Sense, A

Fe e l i n g s i m u l t a n e o u s l y re s t e d a n d i n v i g o r a t e d , I reconvened with my travelmates for lunch at the Pool Grille, aptly named for an oceanfront infnity-edge pool opposite the entrance to the dining room. Ofering lunch and dinner (the fish tacos and lobster and cantaloupe salad are top-notch), the Pool Grille also hosts a weekly “Caribbean Night”, a bountiful bufet-style dinner that highlights dishes indigenous to Antigua such as pepper pot stew, Fungee (cornmeal and okra dumplings), lobster, Roti (patties flled with curried potatoes and beef ), sweet potato dumplings, mahi-mahi, Johnny Cakes, conch and saltfsh. T h e o w n e r s a n d m a n a g e m e n t o f Ju m b y B a y a r e committed to being responsible stewards of their local
environment. One of the most exciting island-supported initiatives is the Hawksbill Turtle Program, which celebrated its 28th anniversary in 2014, making it the longest running scientific study of its kind. Each year, Hawksbills return to nest on the resort’s Pasture Bay Beach, a protected nesting area that has been drawing the now-endangered sea turtles since the age of the dinosaurs. Interested guests can sign up for “turtle watches” and they will be notifed by the staf is a successful nesting is predicted. Tis is the only time guests are permitted to be in close proximity to turtles in the nesting area. With so many activities available to occupy your time, it can be easy to forget that it is perfectly acceptable to do nothing, which is arguably the greatest luxury of all in an era of chronic overscheduling. Opportunities for moments (or even hours) of idyllic idleness are offered in abundance at Lazy Lizard, so much so that even my fellow Type A’s will fnd themselves slowly adjusting to (and even enjoying) “island time”. Rates for the Lazy Lizard estate house on Jumby Bay begin at $11,500/night. For more information visit rosewoodhotels.com/ en/jumby-bay-antigua. sl

CLOTHES CALL Chicago’s sharp dressed men turn to Frederick Lynn Haberdasshere for custom suiting and beyond Written by Brian Dukerschein Portrait by Maria Ponce Berre Chicago’s tailored clothing market is a crowded feld to say the least, with scores of retailers ofering men suiting swatches by the tens of thousands—and the promise of a luxuriously made garment with a “perfect ft.” Tankfully Aaron Comes, founder of Frederick Lynn Haberdasshere (9 E. Since opening his storefront in late 2013, the 34-year-old Comes, who boasts 15 years of experience in men’s tailoring, has been exceeding the sartorial expectations of some of the city’s most discerning gentlemen, from C-suite executives to boundary-pushing creatives (Anthony Martin, executive chef at Tru, is a fan). “Tese guys are my mentors, my rock stars,” says Comes of his clients. “Not celebrities; not athletes. Tese are business-minded people who are self-made. I learn from them every day.” Step into Comes’ River North showroom (nextdoor to Ikram on Huron Street), and it’s easy to see why he’s attracted a mix of Chicago’s fnest. Te inviting and undeniably masculine space brings to mind a modernized men’s club, thanks to cozy leather seating, a freplace, wood paneling and a full bar. Guests are welcome to sip a complimentary scotch as they browse samples showcasing what 66 slmag.net
happens when Comes’ passion is manifested in some of the world’s premier fabrics—think Dormeuil cashmere and Scabal fannel. All Frederick Lynn apparel, including dress shirts, suiting, overcoats and formalwear, is custom-made to a client’s exact specifcations. “I think that’s what separates me from everyone else in town,” says Comes. “Most people do made-to-measure; we do custom, and that means it’s designed.” Te personalization process even carries over into neckwear, courtesy of the showroom’s supremely exclusive made-to-order tie program with DolcePunta. Tose looking for more immediate gratifcation can walk out with handsome leather goods from Sterling & Burke or J.W. Hulme. And Comes is just getting started. On the horizon: an expanded assortment of lifestyle products ranging from soaps and lotions to Voluspa candles and home accessories, all curated by Comes and his wife, Bess. “Our goal is to source unique offerings that aren’t mainstream,” he says. “When people walk into the showroom, I want them to have a sense of what its personality is. It’s Bess and me, and it’s Chicago.” And judging by what we’ve seen thus far, we have no doubt Comes will keep us coming back for more. sl
FACE VALUE Fashion matriarch Linda Rodin expands her eponymous beauty line Written by Elise Hofer Shaw Portrait by GABOR
Beauty queen Linda Rodin

Living in a major metropolis on Lake Michigan, our skin takes a beating from more than a few elements this time of year: biting winds, subzero temps and exhaust, just to name a few. “City living can be quite harsh on one’s skin, let alone city living in the winter,” says Linda Rodin. She should know. At 66, Rodin has spent most of her life living and working in New York—frst as a runway model, then as the fashion editor for Harper’s Bazaar in the early ’80s, and later as a celebrity stylist. But these days, it’s her self-named beauty brand that’s turning heads and helping Chicagoans save face. Her advice for combating the cold? “Try my Olio Lusso face oil twice a day as a moisturizer—morning and night. That’s all I do during New York’s cold winters.” Sound simple? It is. And that’s the point: Rodin wanted one no muss, no fuss, go-to moisturizer that would leave her skin looking and feeling luxurious. “I couldn’t fnd anything in the marketplace that I liked, so I decided to create my own products,” she says, and might we add quite modestly for someone who calls Gucci Westman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julianne Moore clients. “It was a simple and selfsh start.” Te frst batch of her face oil, the brand’s biggest seller, was concocted in her Chelsea bathroom in 2008. Now, Olio Lusso Face Oil ($170) boasts 11 pure essential oils, including rosehip, neroli and sweet almond. Available at Barneys New York and space519 in the 900 North Michigan Shops, Rodin’s jasmine-laced face, lip, hair, hand and body balms, oils and creams—and now makeup, a fragrance, a candle and most recently a bar soap—are in popular demand. And she has plans to launch two lipsticks in 2015. “Rodin Olio Lusso is our best-selling single beauty item,” says Lance Lawson, co-owner of space519. “Customers come back for it again and again. To try it is to love it.” We’re hardly surprised. With a face like Rodin’s, who wouldn’t want to follow her lead? sl
POSH PAMPERING Soho House entices well-manicured Chicagoans with Cowshed Spa Written by Korey Huyler Photography by Dave Burk of Hedrich Blessing Photographers Like everyone in town, we’re smitten with Soho House Chicago (113-125 N. Green St., sohohousechicago.com), the West Loop’s 40-room hotel and private members club for folks in the film, media and creative industries that opened its doors in early August. While there’s a lot to lust after—the rooftop pool fanked by wood-burning freplaces, the library-cool Club bar and the boxing ring in the gym, just to name a few of the awesome amenities—our favorite corner of the club is the Cowshed Spa and Shop located on the ground foor. Inspired by Soho House’s first-ever Cowshed space at the Babington House in Somerset outside of London (originally an actual old cow shed, hence the name), the rustic spa ofers up massages, facials, manicures and pedicures, not to mention men’s shaves and haircuts, in a cozy yet luxurious, English countryside-inspired atmosphere. Since its inception in 1998, Cowshed (along with its eponymous products line) has grown into a global, award-winning brand—while maintaining its quintessential British heritage, natch. Soho House Chicago marks Cowshed’s third location in the United States and the frst in the States that is open to the public. Chicago Cowshed clients, House members and hotel guests can grab an Eastern Standard (a signature house cocktail made with Grey Goose or Bombay Sapphire with lime, sugar, cucumber and mint) in the street-level bar, The Allis, then head down a few stairs to the charming spa space, which features reclaimed barn wood on the walls, fve treatment rooms, comfy gray lounge chairs for pedicures, and a barbers parlor where men can get their hair cut or indulge in a hot shave. “Wellness is relative at Cowshed; we like to tailor each experience to our guests and cater to whatever their defnition of ‘wellness’ happens to be,” says Christina Russillo, the international Director of Cowshed. “Cowshed is all about sociable grooming— you can come in and enjoy manis, pedis and laughs with your girlfriends over wine and sweets, or you can come in and tune out with the personal TVs and wireless headphones.” 70 slmag.net
Tony touches like leather chairs and metal basins accent the pedicure space.
Retail-wise, Cowshed sells a mix of all-natural and therapeutic products for bath, body and home—all made in England in collaboration with the same fragrancier they’ve teamed with for 16 years ($6-$60). Te famous Victorian Walled Garden at Babington House was the inspiration for the fragrances and “moods” of the lotions, shower gels, body oils and more. Bonus: Tere is a touch of Babington in every bottle in the form of a trademark herbal infusion sourced from within the garden walls. Guests can choose from products in lines like Knackered Cow (made with lavender and eucalyptus to calm and uplift) and Wild Cow (featuring lemongrass, ginger and rosemary), or our favorite, Gorgeous Cow (made with Madagascan Ylang Ylang, Moroccan rose and Indian Palmarosa to evoke happiness, plus French lavender and linden blossom to soothe). Each “thoughtful” product is made using organic, fair trade plant extracts and wild, crafted ingredients. For Soho House’s gentlemen guests, the shop sells the Neville line of bath, body, skincare and shaving products ($20-$76). Not familiar with that name? Neville is a premium British grooming line boasting items like Neville Shave Cream (a hydrating cream that protects and softens the hair for a closer shave) and Neville Cooling Balm (an aftershave and moisturizer in one that contains cafeine to soothe and horse chestnut extract to heal and reduce irritation). Like everything in Soho House, Cowshed is dedicated to keeping its clients happy, healthy and relaxed—and, if the crowds are any indication, it’s succeeding. “Chicago is a really special property for us,” says Russillo. “It’s the frst time the space and layout of the building allowed us to offer several publicfacing amenities, and Cowshed was absolutely a top priority for us. We wanted to extend the Cowshed experience beyond the membership. We are beyond thrilled to introduce the brand and the Cowshed lifestyle to the Chicago community.” sl Spa services range from $15 for a polish change to $170 for an Alpha Beta Facial. The signature Cowshed Moody Massage is $105 for 60 minutes and $125 for 90 minutes.

BESPOKE ABODE A smart, streamlined family home takes shape in the shadow of Lincoln Park 2550 Written by Amalie Drury Photography by Anthony Tahlier Tanya Franco had been dreaming of an all-white house for 20 years. Te plans were fled away in her design-savvy mind, which was sharp from maximizing every square foot of the global properties she had developed or renovated in her former role as the European managing director and global executive VP for Chicago-based Strategic Hotels and Resorts. She knew perfectly well the most efcient way to lay out a luxury hotel suite. And now that she was heading back to the States after a period of living and working in Europe, the London-born Franco needed the right piece of property to apply her skills to a home for herself, her dashing Italian husband Luca Franco, their four young children and their beige-and-white Havanese, Hugo. Franco’s dream is now a head-turning reality in Lincoln Park. Te sleek, four-story house sprang to life this year behind architect Lucien Lagrange’s Lincoln Park 2550, the classical, mansard-roofed high-rise that the Francos had originally toured with the idea that they might move into a condo there. “We decided that with four kids and a dog, it probably wasn’t a lifestyle
76 slmag.net
we could handle,” she says. Instead, Franco told the developers to give her a call if they ever wanted to ditch their plans to build townhomes on the northwest side of the building and sell the plots for single-family use instead. Eventually, they did. Once the land was theirs, Franco’s longtime architect, Howard Kagan, took her drawings and turned them into a foor plan in two weeks fat. “Never have I done that. It usually takes two months,” says Kagan. Next, they hired Cordos Construction, a commercial contractor with the expertise to take on the unconventional project. “Tey had the idea to use architectural pre-cast concrete, which turned out to be a blessing,” says Kagan—especially since construction began in January, in freezing conditions that are not friendly to conventional materials like poured concrete and brick. “Te house was erected in two weeks and one day,” Kagan says, still amazed. “We were fying in panels of concrete, and the guys [building homes] next door weren’t getting past the frst level. People were stopping on the street and saying, ‘Where did that come from?’”
Owners Tanya and Luca Franco in their second-foor kitchen, the heart of the house.

Color in the Franco house can be found in the form of collectibles from their travels: antique vases from China, wooden Buddhas from Tailand and candlesticks from Venice.
The Francos took up residence in the house in August, in time to test-drive its breezy indoor-outdoor design. While crews still hammered away at other houses on the block, the Franco children ran around on the 2550 development’s oval courtyard lawn and swam in its pool (the homeowners receive all of the development’s amenities, and their garage is connected to the main building). A week after they moved in, Franco calmly watched her kids and dog tromp over the home’s white porcelain tile foors. “Te children are pretty neat, and I’m pretty pedantic,” she says with a shrug. “My husband puts up with us.” 78 slmag.net
It may look like a pristine sanctuary of order, but Franco and Kagan designed the 5,000-square-foot house for family life. Te kids’ four identical bedrooms—no fghting over who gets the biggest one—are on the top foor, where there are also two bathrooms, one for the boys, one for the girls. Concrete slabs between each of the home’s levels mean peace and quiet in the master suite below, where Tanya and Luca can often be found working out of their home ofce. (Tanya founded and now runs the Italian women’s fashion line, Via Strozzi, while Luca is a managing partner with Luxury Frontiers, a company

that develops multiuse resorts around the world with a focus on experiential travel.) Another level down, the second-foor kitchen is the hub of the home, and it is the best example of Franco and Kagan’s goal to build three-dimensionally, making the most of the 13-foot ceiling heights. Done in gleaming white lacquer by the Italian kitchen company Arrital (purchased through Euroluxe in Lakeview), the room has super-tall cabinets with seemingly endless storage space and a built-in sliding ladder so the petite Franco can reach what’s inside. (The ladders are a theme
throughout the house, appearing again in the kids’ rooms and the master closet.) And since Franco and her 6-foot-4 husband are both avid cooks, the kitchen also has a T-shaped, twoheight counter with separate cooktops: a lower-than-average workspace for her, and standard-height for him. Te kitchen’s south wall consists of windowed doors that open onto a terrace overlooking the aforementioned courtyard, so the family can be outside as easily as walking into the next room. On the frst foor there’s a kids den and what must be the most organized mudroom in the city.

A massive front door and high ceilings make for a dramatic frst impression.
Other thoughtful details insisted upon by Franco and Kagan set the home apart from the recent slew of traditional, limestonefaçade mansions that dot the neighborhood. Te pre-cast concrete slabs that cover its front and back are insulated for lower energy use. Te construction is freproof, which meant the Francos got to skip the city’s rule mandating two staircases in a home of this size. Te north and south sides of the house have split heating and cooling zones, since they get diferent amounts of light. Te shades that lower to block prying eyes from peeking through the
gigantic windows are fawlessly concealed near the ceiling, and the white staircase with its foating treads is painted in an automotive fnish that won’t chip or scratch. Te massive, 10-foot front door might weigh more than 600 pounds, but it moves ever so gently on its custom pivot hinge. Franco takes great satisfaction in opening and closing that door. “I wasn’t a naive client,” she says, smiling at Kagan, her conspirator in contemporary boundary pushing. “We were already talking on the same level. We knew exactly what we wanted.” sl

TRU ROMANCE Anthony Martin’s 12-course tasting menu encourages dining with all fve senses Written by Joel Hoglund Photography by Anthony Tahlier
Executive chef Anthony Martin impresses with innovative presentations like this levitating amuse-bouche.
“Don’t eat this,” the manager says with a wry smile as he positions two foot-tall glass pedestals on the table in front of my fancée and me. “All will be revealed.” Soon an eager, fresh-faced man in his early thirties arrives, his hair neatly slicked back, his sharp black chef ’s coat distinguishing him from one of the many smartly dressed servers who’ll spoil us throughout the night. He’s clutching a little cauldron, steam bubbling out of it, appearing genuinely excited to dazzle us with a trick at the start of our meal like it’s the very frst time he’s performed it. With tweezers he removes a metal disc—“Don’t eat this part,” he too warns with a laugh—and sets it to foat an inch of the top of the pedestal, then tops it with a petite potato crisp crowned with a dab of caviar and crème fraiche. It hovers and hisses steam for a bit and then slowly descends to let us pop the bite at last into our mouths. Magical.

Petite summer salad
He excuses himself back into the kitchen to really get the show started. Tis is Anthony Martin, executive chef and partner at Tru (676 N. St. Clair St., trurestaurant.com), and the furthest you can get from a stuffy old toque in a French restaurant. In the four years since he ofcially took the helm as executive chef and partner of the lauded fine dining spot, Martin has put a new sheen on one of the crown jewels in Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises’ empire, racking up four-star reviews, chef of the year honors from the Chicago Tribune his frst year out of the gate, and a Michelin star each year since. He cut his teeth as executive sous chef at Joël Robuchon in Las Vegas, but to us he seems like a guy who just loves to share his cooking, and that welcoming manner—plus, well, the crisp fute of Gaston Chiquet Tradition Brut NV that kicks of Wine Director Jennifer Tietz’s spot-on pairings—immediately relaxes us into the romantic night out we were hoping for. We’re not the only ones for whom this is a special occasion. We spy more than a few birthday candles fickering between lovey-eyed 90 slmag.net
couples, but the expert staf manages to make each little celebration happening in the open, high-ceilinged dining room feel like a private afair. Or, rather, like a private party in a world-class museum. From the Gerhard Richter behind the host stand to the Yves Klein presiding over the stylish lounge to the Warhol nesting above a corner table, there is plenty of stunning artwork to ogle between courses. But it’s clear from the gallery-style lighting fixed to presentation points at each diner’s spot—one of many subtle details that add immensely to the experience—that the true art is on the table. Witness the coral caviar. Under opening chef Rick Tramonto, Tru was famous for presenting caviar on a curving glass staircase. A less self-confident chef may have axed his predecessor’s signature starter, but Martin makes it his own with a revamped presentation that elicits awed gasps from even the coolest diners in the room: Te fresh, juicy Russian and Italian royal ossetras, and bright, frm keta salmon roe (up to 10 varieties of caviar in total) are mounded on polished abalone shells and arranged on an ecstatic burst of sculpted coral.

It’s a bold statement to make so early in the 12-course Experience tasting menu, but Martin builds and balances each aspect of the epic meal like a master storyteller. Te light, sweet favor of creamy corn pudding tempers dark, earthy tangles of black trufe. A circle of luscious foie gras is cut with cherry and given a textural foil in crunchy popped quinoa. Tender hunks of frog leg mingle with meaty, favorful chanterelles, wild garlic, fava beans and green almond. A sphere of refreshing white asparagus ice cream excites a green asparagus soup that’s dotted with pickled mustard seeds and a shard of bacon. I’d never thought about what it might be like to sink a fork into one of Monet’s water lilies or Van Gogh’s almond blossoms, but I get the distinct sensation I’m spoiling an exquisite canvas each time I lay into one of Martin’s artfully arranged dishes. Te feeling subsides, thankfully, once the favors take over. And then it arrives. The dish we’d been rubbernecking to admire on other tables all night: the whole roasted Muscovy duck. It’s presented intact for shock and awe and then returns on ornately patterned china as a bounty of perfectly rare breast meat paired with a tuft of caramelized Belgian endive and pineapple ginger chutney to enhance the crisp, peppery skin. And whole means whole: Te leg comes conft style on the side with apple puree and potato. It’s sublime. My fancée, who lived six years in Paris, proclaims it the best she’s ever eaten, and I nearly weep

as I let a server clear my last few bites so I can save room for the cut-to-order artisanal cheeses, hot-from-the-oven madeleines, and a light and exhilarating dessert of berries spiced up with black pepper and tangy nasturtium. When they roll us into the kitchen to thank chef Martin for the feast, he’s sketching a new dish for the constantly evolving menu on drawing paper atop a gleaming golden granite countertop. We’re not surprised to learn he almost went to art school. “For me cooking is 100 percent an outlet for my artistic expression and one of the few mediums that can be experienced with every sense,” he says. And given the romance of dining at Tru, we’re also not surprised to learn he married his wife, Boutique Bites Fine Catering owner Elaina Vasquez, right here, and that he and his staf have aided many a marriage proposal during dinner service. “We will get as creative as a person likes,” Martin says, “and that extends beyond just proposals into all special occasions. Recently we had a couple that wanted to celebrate the announcement of the gender of their baby, which they didn’t know yet. Tey brought in a sealed card from their doctor and passed it to the kitchen. We sent a copper pot to the table that slowly released a helium balloon above the table. It was pink.” It’s a great story, but I’m distracted. I’m wondering, Is it too late to get my duck back? sl

HORSE POWER Lake Forest’s Equestrian Connection harnesses the healing power of hippotherapy Written by Alex Sabbag Photography by Michael Delott As a mother of 24-year-old twin boys living with cerebral palsy, Diana Schnell knows firsthand the day-to-day challenges that mental disability can present. She explored endless therapies during her sons’ formative years to enhance their quality of life— primarily private occupational, physical and speech therapy—but it was hippotherapy that tied it all together.
Lake Forest’s Equestrian Connection provides physical and mental healing to more than 300 clients a week.
“Hippotherapy uses the characteristic movements of a horse to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input to its patients,” says Schnell. “I think all [therapies] are benefcial, but working with horses is what gave my sons a new dimension of movement and motivation that these other therapies could not.” Moved by the results, Schnell cofounded Equestrian Connection (600 N. Bradley Rd., Lake Forest, equestrianconnection.org) in 2001, ofering equine-assisted therapeutic programs to adults and children with disabilities ranging from special needs and emotional illnesses to brain injuries. Thanks to a stable of professionally trained horses (from ponies and warm bloods to thoroughbreds), skilled therapists and a devoted pool of volunteers, the organization provides physical and mental healing to more than 300 clients— ages 2 to 105—a week. Located on 10 acres in Lake Forest, Ill., the nonprofit harnesses the connection made between the horse and its handler or rider. Picture it: Clients who have little control over their bodies fnd themselves in control of a 1,000lb animal. Te horse becomes a nonjudgmental “therapist” whose gait allows even those individuals that are wheelchair-bound to experience a walking movement. “Te physical transformation our clients 102 slmag.net
experience is nothing short of remarkable,” says Schnell. “We have helped people who haven’t been able to walk in years, or ever in their lifetime, through our therapists’ intervention and the physical connection their bodies make with the horses.” Apropos to its mission, Equestrian Connection has received unwavering support from the Lake Forest community and beyond. Te organization holds four signature fundraising events per year, most recently Marty’s Barn Party, a tribute to the late Marty Domitrovich, founding board member and key Equestrian Connection benefactor. Prior to losing his battle with pancreatic cancer, Domitrovich rallied the local community to secure the down payment for Equestrian Connection’s headquarters. A 26,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art barn plays host to the org’s 17 diferent programs, including art therapy, summer camp and job training. (Other annual events include the Villa del Lago/ Equestrian Connection Charity Cup Polo Match, Fall Fun Fair and annual Holiday Bazaar.) Since its inception, Equestrian Connection abides by a “no turn down” policy, granting every individual that comes through its doors access to therapeutic programming regardless of economic status. “I have experienced the transformation equine therapy has offered my kids,” says Schnell. “With more than 90 percent of each dollar raised going directly to our mission, I am dedicated and inspired daily to ofer the same resources to as many families as possible.” Its multidimensional platform also inspires a culture of volunteerism, especially among the youth in the immediate communities. (Equestrian Connection currently boasts more than 400 youth and adult volunteers, ranging in age from 13 to 80.) Helping more than 1,000 people each year, Equestrian Connection’s impact is huge. Yet with 600,000 people in the Chicagoland area living with a reported disability, Schnell has high hopes for expanding its reach. “We’re expanding our speech therapy and art programs, adding socialization programs—yoga on horseback, family nights, job training, homework helper nights—and recently added a dementia program called Little Bits for 3- to 5-year-olds. We’re also partnering with other special needs organizations to continue to identify and provide for unmet needs for adults and children with disabilities.
