From the Editor-in-Chief
As this issue goes to press and I review the content, I am struck, once again, by the diversity of articles that our team always seems to pull together. From wild horses to Rolls Royce, from high fashion to kitschy antiques (and everything in between), it is this cultured eclecticism that I find most engaging and exciting about many of the people I meet - and, frankly, about being involved with Sophisticated Living. Just in the past 8 weeks, my days have been as varied as practicing yoga at a Buddhist retreat in the Berkshires, celebrating the contributions of my sweet friend and dynamo Virginia Stoltz at The Columbus Museum of Art black tie gala, and joining about 20k other guests of Abigail and Les Wexner at the totally fun, super-relaxed and wonderfully meaningful New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix & Family Day supporting The Center for Family Safety and Healing. In my life as an antiques and art professional, clients would always apologize for the “less than” objects in their collections. “I bought it because it made me smile,” they’d say, quickly followed by “I know it isn’t worth much.” It is easy to reduce the things (and people and experiences) in our life to values; in fact it is sometimes necessary. But the older I get, the more I recognize that there is no “less than” in my life, there is only variety - and, the more variety I get, the hungrier I seem to be for more. As 2017 comes to a close, it is pretty awesome to reflect on a year that has been a wild ride (one that I may have described in negative terms just a few short years ago), but a year that was full of terrific surprises, lots of exploration, and more than a little adventure. Here’s to closing it out with memorable holiday moments with the people we love most, and launching 2018 with a bucket list that grows longer by the day. Warm wishes,
Amelia Jeffers Editor in Chief ajeffers@slmag.net
PS. On tap for 2018 is the launch of several opportunities for our readers to dive deeper into subjects that matter most to you. If you’d like to be one of the first to learn about this new project, email me at ajeffers@slmag.net. I look forward to learning more, together!

WILD SAGE COLLECTIVE Written by Susan Emerson Nutter
Dreams can be powerful; living them even more so. Just ask Columbus’ Erica Fullen, reiki practitioner, holistic healer, educator, mother, and driving force behind the Wild Sage Collective. More than fifteen years ago, shortly after her father had passed, he spoke to Fullen in a dream suggesting that she was a natural healer. Fullen agreed, and the holistic arts became her passion. In short order, Fullen’s company, the Wild Sage Collective was born. Understanding the seven chakras is part of any holistic practice, and Fullen devised a way to help her students do just that using elegant jewelry as an aide to help enhance inner balance. The line, known as East was the first link of what has become the Wild Sage Collective. “The jewelry has inspired many connections,” Fullen explains. Connections that also came from her extensive travels as a teacher at retreat centers. With a degree in psychology from Arizona State University and certificates and licenses in esthetics, second degree reiki, lymphatic drainage, acupressure, and chakra balancing, Fullen’s time was in high demand, and so were her products. Appealing to her clients for her fresh, modern take on traditional items, Fullen designed a very popular make-your-own mala kit. Malas serve as a physical reminder of an intention, prayer, or mantra. “We called the line Modmala because it is a modern version of the mala necklace. Traditionally, your mala was given to you by your guru,” Fullen explains. “With Modmala, you create your own. As the beads are tied together, one also ties into their own mantra. The mala making becomes its own form of meditation, binding you to your intentions and to the beads themselves.”
22 slmag.net
As Wild Sage Collective grew, Fullen saw an opportunity to offer mini retreats (one day commitments where attendees are encouraged to “just be”) known as Wild Sage Journeys. “We want to provide and create a space for people to decompress and reconnect with themselves, whether it is for one day or just a few hours,” Fullen explains. The Wild Sage Collective’s next fall miniretreat will take place November 5, 2017. Nourishment of the soul is what the Wild Sage Collective is all about. It only makes sense that nourishment for the body would follow. Rute; the fourth cog in this collective is a catering service that creates delicious and healthful dishes for retreats, blessings, gatherings and celebrations. According to Fullen, “Rute is about offering chakra-inspired meals that are both seasonal and sustainable.” Being balanced is the goal. The melding of the East, Modmala, Wild Sage Journeys, and Rute captures the connection between mind, body, and spirit, where each shines individually and also together as the Wild Sage Collective. Scene from the Harmony Project's Dream On Concert
DON’T MISS
THE CONCERT FOR US Written by Susan Emerson Nutter
David Brown likes a challenge. Rising to an occasion like few people have the energy and talent to do, Brown has leveraged his passion through the Harmony Project to tackle hard social issues and challenge conventional thinking on everything from racism to incarceration, disabilities to homelessness, and poverty to privilege. Endeavoring to not only make a change but to inspire change, Brown’s newest ambition is unmatched in his career: assemble a cohort of nearly 1,000 amateur (but dedicated) performers and sell out Nationwide Arena for their concert. As if that isn’t enough, Brown and his loyal cast of staff and volunteers are hosting a fair of sorts: before and after the performance, a group of thirty local nonprofits will each showcase their mission and a wish list for 2018. Brown’s directive to those who attend? Walk, learn, listen, and give if you can. Slated for the evening of December 7, The Harmony Project: Concert for Us has not yet sold out (as of this printing), but if history serves, it most assuredly will. Hosted by celebrity anchor Jane Pauley - who fell in love with Brown and his work after they were featured on CBS Sunday Morning last year, the stellar lineup includes a bevy of Harmony Project groups including: • The Spirit of Columbus Choir: the flagship choir of nearly 500 voices from every walk of life; • Commons in Harmony: comprised of folks who are differently abled and men and women who have experienced homelessness, in partnership with The Salvation Army. Goodwill, Alvis House, National Church Residences, and ARC Industries; • Inside/Out: the voices from the Ohio Reformatory for Women; • Kids in Harmony: the kids’ version of Spirit of Columbus; 26 slmag.net
• and student programs from South High, KIPP, United Schools Network and more than a dozen middle-schools across Columbus Joining Brown and his protégés for various songs throughout the night will be a 30-piece band and orchestra; Opera Columbus star Peggy Kriha Dye; Harmony Project board member, Spirit of Columbus choir voice, and local business leader Tom Krouse and his band, Grassinine; as well as performers from another remarkable Columbus nonprofit, Momentum. Created in partnership with BalletMet in 2003, Momentum engages nearly 1,000 children each week in dance, music, and performance to develop lifelong habits of self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence to place them on a path to success. The music will be familiar, inspiring, thought-provoking, and entertaining original arrangements of pop, soul and rock favorites like “Human”, “Love Runs Out”, and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. Those who know David know that he likes to keep song choices super quiet - relying on the element of surprise to meet an audience in the moment. The Concert for Us may be the epitome of the Harmony Project mission and vision: Artistic Passion. Social Purpose. Many People. One Community. For those looking for a bit of inspiration to be a part of something bigger, grab one of the few remaining seats at what will certainly be a landmark event this holiday season. To buy tickets for the December 7 Concert for Us, or for more information about the Harmony Project, visit harmonyproject.com. sl For more information about Momentum, visit momentum-excellence.org.

DO YOU KNOW
WOMEN INSPIRING STRENGTH AND HOPE Written by Susan Emerson Nutter
The Women Inspiring Strength and Hope (W.I.S.H.) Society of Make-A-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana honors women in the central Ohio community for their career success, significant contributions to the community, and/or their personal commitment to Make-A-Wish. The program is an opportunity to celebrate women, and inspire them to make a difference in the lives of local children who have been diagnosed with critical medical conditions. While honored, each woman is charged with the task of raising funds to grant at least one child’s wish - $8,000. From personal letter-writing campaigns and lemonade stands, to highend golf outings and home cocktail parties, this initiative has raised more than $500,000 since it began nearly three years ago. Thanks to the efforts of these incredible women, more than 60 life-changing wishes have been granted through W.I.S.H in central Ohio. The wish experience is an important part of the treatment process for kids facing critical illnesses. It gives them strength to keep fighting and hope for the future. Each class of W.I.S.H. honorees have felt compelled to get involved after witnessing the power of a wish. Entering the third year of recognizing local women, former W.I.S.H. honorees have inspired current honorees to think bigger when it comes to their fundraising goals. This year, for example, honorees Tracey McGuire and Maria Ellis teamed up with the esteemed Double Eagle Club to host “A Party in Near Perfect 30 slmag.net
Surroundings,” an end of summer golf event featuring live music, dinner, and cocktails. The event raised an impressive $60,000 to make central Ohio wishes come true. Honoree Chasity Kuttrus also hosted a unique and successful W.I.S.H. fundraising event, held at The Kitchen in Downtown Columbus. Chasity met her fundraising goal of $8,000 by inviting women in her network to attend an interactive evening where guests learned how to make a new fall dish, a creative cocktail, and a beautiful floral arrangement. The 2017 Class of W.I.S.H. is honored at this year’s Celebration Luncheon on Thursday, November 16th at the Exchange at Bridge Park. Just two months into this year’s campaign, they have raised nearly $100,000 and counting to make wishes come true for central Ohio kids. Each woman is recognized as an honoree, as well as celebrated for their contributions to the community and local Make-A-Wish families. The 2017 Class of Women Inspiring Strength and Hope are Vanessa Bartos, Hillary Bates, Jennifer Craycraft, Tanya Curtin, Sherri Davis, Davidee Doss, Maria Ellis, Erika Gilmore, Chasity Kuttrus, Tracey McGuire, Janis Mitchell, Patti Rodriguez, Erin Samenuk, Amanda Saraf, Bhuvana Setty, Annette Mericle White, Julie Wilkes, and Katrina Zilberman. sl For more information about Make-A-Wish or Women Inspiring Strength and Hope, please contact Development Officer, Christine Hoyer, at CHoyer@oki.wish.org or (614) 923-0555.

HOWHorses THE WEST WAS FUN and Horsepower in Sheridan, Wyoming Written by Bridget Williams / Photography by Shawn Parker Like a naughty child sent to bed without supper, the guttural rumble of thunder signaled that a stormy night was in the offing. The grumbling, which became more pronounced as I progressed along a dusty two-track, was joined by a veil of pregnant clouds that gradually obscured the distant mountain peaks I’d been trying to reach for the past hour. A sucker for the chance to literally wander a road less traveled, I set out on a solo trek just steps from the front door of the guest lodge at the 3,000-acre Canyon Ranch in Big Horn, Wyoming. A barrage of steep ascents that forced me to take intermittent breaks to catch my breath also gave me an opportunity to admire the vastness of the prairie landscape in this remote area near the border with Montana. While taking my umpteenth panoramic photo, I noticed a hint of crimson amongst the waist-high flaxen grass. Curiosity piqued, I left the path to investigate, and found a handsome buck, recently felled, with a gaping hole in its neck. I walked gingerly
around the carcass, surveying the scene, when suddenly a grim realization dawned on me: whatever caused the demise of this majestic beast could very likely be nearby and none too happy that I was poking around its dinner. In that moment, the dichotomy of the region’s beauty and the beast reality came sharply into focus, and I slowly backed away from the buck before hightailing it back to the ranch, happy to not have become a dinner addendum. I first fell in love with this part of the country more than three decades ago, sitting on scratchy plaid upholstery and gazing out the window from the backseat of my parents’ 1974 Westfalia Camper, a 68-horsepower engine “powering” us along the twisty mountain roads en route to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. This time around, the scenery was still as majestic as ever, but it whooshed by markedly faster as I piloted a 2017 Salamanca Blue Rolls-Royce Dawn with 563 horsepower–top down and radio up– along the open roads. slmag.net

“Wyoming is testimony to what good people can do if you give them enough space,” author Sam Morton remarked during a campfire storytelling session at Canyon Ranch on the night of my arrival in Sheridan. Our group, a mix of writers, photographers, filmmakers and motoring enthusiasts, listened intently as Morton spoke of highs and lows throughout the region’s hardscrabble history. The integral role of the horse was woven throughout his narrative, from warring Native American tribes, to the non-firstborn sons of English noblemen, who were sent abroad in the late 1800s to make their own fortunes, and onward to present-day hobbyists and hunters who continue to be drawn to this achingly beautiful landscape. Along with thoroughbred horses, polo was one of the pursuits young gentry imported with them in the late 1800s; early matches in the Big Horn area were played by teams comprised of moneyed scions, US cavalry officers and local cowboys. Now recognized as the oldest polo venue west of the Mississippi River, match play commences in the present era on the first week in June and 34 slmag.net
continues every Sunday through Labor Day. A come-as-you-are affair, visitors are frequently treated to a show by some of the world’s top-rated players (thebighornpoloclub.com). The British right of primogeniture played a role in the founding of the guest ranch where our group was lodging: Oliver Wallop, the youngest son of an English earl, purchased Canyon Ranch in 1888. Even after inheriting the title of the 8th Earl of Portsmouth in 1925 following the death of his brothers and their male heirs, Wallop chose to remain on the land he’d come to love. For more than 125 years, this ranch and its charismatic caretakers have been drawing visitors near and far: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stopped in Sheridan to visit the Wallops and buy polo ponies as part of their North American tour in 1984. Today, the 3,000-acre guest ranch is operated by Paul Wallop and his wife Sandra, who capably carry on a legacy of hospitality that spans four generations (canyonranchbighorn.com). There’s nary a person who, at some point in their childhood, didn’t imagine themselves in the role of a cowboy or cowgirl.

In Sheridan, there are endless opportunities to revisit the past while driving through a landscape that has been seen minimal alterations for generations. In downtown Sheridan, for instance, you can chase the ghosts of Wild West legends whose exploits, and the places where they took place, allow them to live on in infamy. We certainly felt like celebrities as heads turned to ogle our fleet of Rolls Royce (two Dawn and two Wraith) as they paraded down Main Street; it was refreshing to see such a bustling scene in the well-preserved city center (a total of 46 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places). A neon sign depicting a bucking cowboy welcomes visitors to The Mint Bar (mintbarwyo.com). Opened in 1907, it is the ultimate cowboy bar in the heart of cowboy country. With more taxidermy in one place than I’ve seen in my entire life, the walls are lined with cedar shingles emblazoned with some 9,000 cattle brands found throughout Wyoming. During Prohibition, it was renamed The Mint Cigar Co. and Soda Shop, but those in the know could still imbibe in
the backroom speakeasy. Nearby, the Historic Sheridan Inn (sheridaninn.com), built in 1892, was frequented by “Buffalo Bill” Cody and his Wild West Show, and in subsequent years has hosted the likes of Ernest Hemingway, President Herbert Hoover, Will Rogers and Bob Hope. The 22-room inn is now welcoming overnight guests once again following a comprehensive restoration. If you are lucky, you might encounter the ghost of “Miss Kate,” a beloved member of the community who lived and worked at the inn for 64 years. At the Rope Shop, located in an ancillary building behind King’s Saddlery (kingssaddlery.com), you can watch lassos being made and try your hand at roping a steer dummy (which is much harder than it looks). Afterward, be sure to meander through the King Museum to take a gander at an extensive private collection of Western and cowboy memorabilia from all over the world. Don’t leave without a King Ropes baseball cap, which has gained cult status after being spotted on the heads of several influential celebrities. slmag.net

Sheridan counts seven billionaires among its 20,000 residents; while the scenic beauty is certainly a draw, a lack of personal and corporate income taxes and low property and sales taxes certainly helps. An influx of affluence has contributed to a robust cultural and arts scene relative to the size of the city. Tops among these is the spectacular Brinton Museum (thebrintonmuseum.org). Located on the historic 620-acre Quarter Circle A Ranch, the architecturally significant Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Building holds an impressive array of pieces that respectfully represent American Indian art and culture, alongside examples of contemporary Western art. Part of the campus at Sheridan College, the Whitney Center for the Arts (whitneyarts.org) stages a variety of events throughout the year, including the annual Wyoming Theatre Festival. Omnipresent on the horizon, the mountains always seem to be calling in Sheridan, and having been given the keys to a Rolls-Royce for a few days, I was happy to heed the siren song.
With the convertible top lowered, the purring of the engine served as a gentle reminder of the V12 powerhouse responsible for our cloudlike ride as we headed into the 1.1 million acres that comprise Bighorn National Forest. Focused on keeping my eyes (and the car) on the twisty roads during our foggy morning expedition, I was (almost) jealous of my three passengers, who had ample room to stretch out and admire both the scenery and the exquisite craftsmanship that defines the cabin of a Rolls-Royce. Weighing nearly three tons and stretching 17-feet-5-inches long, I was amazed at how nimble the Dawn felt in hairpin turns, and the way it rapidly responded without hesitation when a straightaway presented itself. Driving was such a pleasure that even an ardent hiker like me wasn’t all that disappointed when a planned trek up Steamboat Point was nixed because of the fog; it freed up more time to enjoy the Rolls-Royce hallmark “magic carpet ride” in an equally magical landscape. sl

BRAGGIN' WAGON
There’s much to tout about the all-new Panamera Sport Turismo Written by Andre James Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this past March, the allnew Panamera Sport Turismo will be available in four different versions in the US market by the end of 2017: Panamera 4, Panamera 4S, Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, and the Panamera Turbo. With a design based on its successful sports sedan counterpart, these four Panamera variants boast a large tailgate, low loading edge, increased luggage compartment volume, a 4+1 seating concept and up to 550 horsepower; amenities that meld to create the perfect combination of everyday usability and maximum flexibility. "For Porsche, the Panamera Sport Turismo is a step forward into a new segment, but retains all of those values and attributes that are characteristic of Porsche", says Michael Mauer, Director of Style Porsche. Reflecting Porsche design DNA, the Sport Turismo is characterized by dynamic proportions: 198.8-inches long, 56.2-inches high, and 76.3-inches wide, with a wheelbase that spans 116.1-inches. The roomy silhouette is further differentiated by short body overhangs and large wheels measuring up to 21 inches. At the top of the vehicle, the roof extends into the first adaptively extendible roof spoiler, whose angle can be set in three stages, depending on the driving situation and selected vehicle settings. At track speeds, the roof spoiler automatically moves to the performance position with an angle of plus one degree, thereby increasing driving stability and lateral dynamics. When the optional panoramic roof system is open, the spoiler also helps to lower cabin buffeting noise. The raised roofline of the Sport Turismo permits it to be the first Panamera to offer rear seating for three passengers. The two outer seats take the form of individual bucket-like seats–in keeping with the model line's reputation for sporty performance with maximum passenger comfort–thereby producing a 2+1 configuration in the rear. As an option, the Panamera Sport Turismo is available in a four-seat configuration with a pair of electrically adjustable individual seats in the back. A one-piece power-operated hatch grants entry to a noticeable increase in 38 slmag.net
storage over the sedan variant, even more so when the backseats are folded down (together or individually), to create a nearly level loading floor. Available as an option for the Panamera Sport Turismo models, a luggage compartment management system includes two rails integrated in the loading floor, four tie-down points, and a luggage compartment partition net. All of the technological innovations introduced last year with the launch of the brand new Panamera model line are available in the Sport Turismo: digital Porsche Advanced Cockpit, the advanced assistance system Porsche InnoDrive, Porsche Communication Management (PCM), adaptive cruise control, and turbocharged powertrains. Chassis systems, such as Rear Axle Steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC Sport), the electronic roll stabilization system, are also available. Porsche Traction Management, an active all-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, as well as adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology, is part of the standard equipment. Four propulsion systems are offered. Standard on the Panamera 4 Sport Turismo is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine generating 330 horsepower, and capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 5.0 seconds with launch control. Notch up to the Panamera 4S Sport Turismo, and cover the same distance one-second faster with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Combining the same combustion engine found in the 4S with an additional 136-horsepower electric motor, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo makes the 0 to 60mph sprint in 4.4 seconds. With launch control, 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 generating 550 horsepower in the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo is the fastest of the lot, reaching 60mph in just 3.4 seconds. Pricing for the Panamera 4 Sport Turismo starts at $96,200; $104,000 for the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo; $109,200 for the Panamera 4S Sport Turismo; and, $154,000 for the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo, excluding the $1,050 delivery, processing, and handling fee. sl

Guest accommodations take the form of charming cottages that collectively comprise an Englishinspired village.
A GEORGIA PEACH Barnsley Resort Written by Caylee Matthews It is easy to be enamored with old buildings. Their time-worn walls are stalwart keepers of secrets; a repository for thousands of stories lost in time. An astute observer may be able to elicit a few clues that whisper of the past and then conjecture the details. If ever walls could talk, those that remain in the ruins of Woodlands–a once stately manor built in the late 1840s by Godfrey Barnsley for his wife Julia a few miles from the rural town of Adairsville in northwest Georgia–would spin an epic tale. Hauntingly handsome in its current state of halted decay, and surrounded by gloriously maintained gardens as the centerpiece of 3,000-acre Barnsley Resort, the Italianate manor has borne witness to fortune and famine, love and loss, pain and perseverance, and even the murder of a Barnsley heir at the hand of his brother. While Barnsley Manor may be the resort’s raison d'être, Clent Coker is arguably the estate’s greatest champion. A history buff and life-long admirer of the property, his tenacity and unwavering commitment to saving the home, along with its antebellum gardens and the stories of those who lived and died there, most certainly kept it from becoming a footnote 40 slmag.net
in the annals of history. “If I had a nickel for every hour I’ve put into Barnsley, I could travel the world,” Coker remarked during a candlelit dinner in the ruins as part of my visit. Coker had a hand in convincing Prince Hubertus Fugger of Bavaria to acquire the property in the late 1980s, and worked closely with him to commence an ambitious plan to stabilize the ruins and revive and expand the gardens, which are now one of the few surviving antebellum gardens in the South. A little more than a decade later, Fugger opened Barnsley Resort, with guest accommodations taking the form of charming cottages that collectively comprise an English-inspired village influenced by the work of Andrew Jackson Downing (18151852). Downing, considered to be the founder of American landscape architecture, was also a prominent advocate of the Gothic Revival style in the United States. To this, Fugger added a Jim Fazio-designed 18-hole golf course, a spa, regionallyinspired fine dining at The Woodlands Grill and Rice House, and a host of outdoor activities, including horseback riding, sporting clays and hiking.
The salt water pool overlooks the emerald fairways of the golf course.

The resort was sold to a private family from north Georgia in 2004, and the new owners have continued in Fugger’s vein of restoration and expansion by constructing four large multibedroom Estate Cottages and adding fly-fishing and paintball to the activities roster, among others. They also acquired 1,800acres less than five miles from the resort to create sister property SpringBank Plantation, which offers upland game hunting and one of the most extensive shooting facilities in the Southeast, with special programming geared specifically for women and teens through the Caesar Guerini Wings & Clays School. The 55-room Inn at Barnsley Resort and Georgian Hall, a special events venue, are both scheduled to open in early 2018 The resort-meets-village concept makes for an idyllic stay, with 90 individually decorated guest rooms and suites spread

out over 36 cottages. Each building is linked by manicured pathways and common greenspaces with fire pits that encourage visitors to sit a spell Southern style both day and night. My 1,056-square-foot Arbor Cottage featured a spacious bedroom, bathroom with a claw-foot tub and separate shower, and a living room with fireplace. After I returned to my room each afternoon following a full day of activities, I was treated to an array of complimentary gourmet snacks and beverages to enjoy from my covered porch. Woodlands is not the only historically significant building on property. host to more peaceful gatherings, namely fine Southern suppers that incorporate the bounty of surrounding farms, including herbs picked on site, local farm-grazed cattle and Kurobuta pork. “Rice House is all about simplicity, how ‘true’ food is supposed to be,” said Food and Beverage Director Aaron Stiles. He added that the resort is “upscale, but never pretentious”. Open Friday through Sunday, weather permitting, the Beer Garden is a prime example of a high-quality experience offered in a relaxed environment. Illuminated by string lights suspended overhead between towering trees, guests congregate at picnic tables around a central pavilion to enjoy menu items from Atlanta’s Spotter Trotter Charcuterie and more than 30 craft beer options. Our most memorable meal was staged in the ruins, which are used as a magical backdrop for weddings and private
events. Sinuous shadows cast by a plethora of candles and the still-functioning fireplaces animated the ancient walls. Like a broken heart torn wide open, the roof of the manor house was ripped off by a tornado in 1906. That traumatic event seems less consequential now in the semi al fresco setting, where the clinking of glasses and the sounds of laughter and happy chatter are free to dissipate into the starry night sky. Although just 60 miles north of Atlanta, the resort’s rustic setting, combined with a plethora of activities, means that you can amply fill an itinerary for several days without ever leaving property. During a three-night girl’s trip to take advantage of the resort’s “Annie Get Your Fun” package, my travel buddies and I giggled and gallivanted all over the resort, many of us trying activities for the first time.

Following a two-hour trail ride in the woods surrounding the resort and a visit with the miniature horses, donkeys and plucky goats in the Barnsley Barnyard, we headed over to the 10-acre lake on property for a fly-casting lesson with pros from the Cohutta Fishing Company. We capped off the weekend with a golf lesson and a round on the Par-72, 7,350-yard course. Spread out over 378 acres, it was designed by Fazio to wind around the resort’s

We made sure to squeeze in plenty of pampering too, by indulging in a “Relax and Refresh” body treatment at the spa that incorporates loofa gourds harvested on property and a proprietary lavender and mint mask; relaxing around the salt water pool with a glass of sweet tea; admiring the historic gardens; and, enjoying a bourbon tasting in the Woodlands Grill. Holiday Wine Guide
The holidays evoke a time of celebration and good cheer surrounded by family and friends. More often than not, these festivities include food and drink, so, in the spirit of the season, I am pleased to offer a few suggestions for a special bottle of wine in the hope that you will be inspired to start a new fine wine tradition. Thanksgiving is the first holiday of the season, so it is apropos to begin with Beaujolais Nouveau, the first Northern Hemisphere wine of the 2017 harvest. The large wine producing region of Beaujolais, located in the southernmost area of Burgundy, almost exclusively produces red wine. Like many French wine regions, it is named after the place and not its grape, Gamay, a thin-skinned variety that is low in tannins. Gamay is noted for pairing with a wide variety of foods; an important attribute when selecting wine to accompany the multitude of both savory and sweet flavors consumed on Thanksgiving. There are basically four different types of Beaujolais: Beaujolais Nouveau, Beaujolais AOC, Beaujolais-Village, and Cru Beaujolais (the highest category of classification). Beaujolais Nouveau is a fruity, quaffable and light red wine that is an excellent accompaniment for a variety of foods. The most popular Beaujolais are those produced by Georges Duboeuf, one of the largest and best-known wine merchants in France, who is often referred to as the king of Beaujolais. I would also recommend trying the high-quality Beaujolais Nouveau produced by Domaine

Written by Scott Harper, MS
Rochette, founded by Joel Rochette in the early 1980s. All Beaujolais Nouveau are rushed to market the third Thursday in November–just in time for Turkey Day–and may be served slightly chilled to emphasize their fruity freshness. Christmas Eve has always been a big bottle night at my house. To allow all of the wine drinkers gathered to partake from the same bottle, I traditionally open a three-liter bottle. Sometimes referred to as “jeroboam,” it is equivalent to four standard bottles. Once consumed, these bottles adorn the stairs that lead down to my wine cellar as a reminder of the good times that were created in their company. Bottles like these are a little hard to find, and are usually expensive because of their rarity and the additional cost to produce them. Think about buying age-worthy wines to serve as part of a future Christmas Eve fête. I suggest starting early to allow the necessary time to find that special bottle. Christmas is designated as my finest wine day. For this occasion, I gravitate to a wine with some bottle age, along with the complexity and character befitting the happy spirit of what I believe to be one of the best holidays of the year. With such a tall order, as well as the likelihood of multiple imbibers, don’t feel like you have to limit yourself to serving a single wine. My first selection would have to be the 2012 E. Guigal “Château d’Ampuis” Côte-Rôtie (Rhone Valley, France). It boasts a medium-purple color leading to a garnet red. Ethereal nose of
red and black fruits of black and red cherry, raspberry, blackberry and plum with generous baking spice, pepper, vanilla, anise, violets and cured meats. Dry, full-bodied and full-flavored with a tannic structure that benefits from decanting. This wine will age and should be consumed in five-to-10 years, but is seductive now! It is made from 93 percent Syrah and seven percent Viognier, and aged for 36 months in new French oak. The 2012 is the 20th anniversary limited edition and it is available in magnums as well as 750 ml bottles. A close runner-up would be a mature bottle of 2006 Luigi Righetti “Capitel de’ Roari”, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. Fourth-generation winemaker Gian Maria Righetti carries on the tradition of this family-run estate founded in 1909. In local dialect, “Capitel de’ Roari” means “many oaks,” which is a reflection of the Righetti’s knowledge of their land. Ripe red cherry, baked strawberry, minerals, light oak, spice, almond and mocha all come together in this velvety textured, seductive and full-bodied wine. New Year’s Eve is always a great Champagne night and I can think of no better way to toast the coming of a new year than with a bottle of bubbly. A bevy of very good sparklers are available, but Champagne, some still say, stands alone as the quintessential sparkling wine. The French region of Champagne produces some outstanding examples. A few excellent Champagnes are Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, Pierre Péters "Cuvée de Réserve" (for a light-
bodied delicate style, great with seafood or as an aperitif ), Brut Premier Cru, Gaston Chiquet Brut "Tradition" (for a big, rich, and fresh baked bread style that will go well with dinner, not just as an aperitif ), and Krug Grand Cuvée (strikes a balance between being big and bold with finesse and elegance, and is great with dinner). In my opinion, New Year’s Day is the most difficult holiday for selecting wine. Depending on how much you celebrated the night before, you may not be in the mood for an adult beverage, so planning ahead may be a bit frivolous. However, should you find yourself in the mood to start 2018 with a toast, you will likely want a wine with longevity that is hearty and can provide a feeling of warmth on a cold winter’s day. My first choice would be Tokaji. The 2013 Tokaji Esszencia Barta Estate is an amazing wine; thick as lemon curd with unbelievable unctuousness, yet with fresh acidity. Full-bodied, full-flavored and full-sweet with the flavors of acacia honey, lemon curd, baking spice and mandarin orange marmalade, it is a very intense yellow/gold color. It offers an infinite finish that cannot be forgotten. When wine is said to be the nectar of the gods, I am quite sure they are referring to Tokaji! Happy Holidays! I encourage you to make celebrating with family and friends extra special this year by sharing an exceptional bottle of wine and starting a new wine tradition. sl A Certified Wine Educator, Harper is one of 236 individuals worldwide who have earned the title Master Sommelier.

Curating a Lifestyle: A Guide to Uncommon Gifts
Written by Amelia Jeffers
Clockwise from top left: Bird carvings and duck decoys are among a vast array of gift-giving options for the sporting enthusiast. This set of three shorebirds sold for just $720 at Garth’s. This 19th Century trade sign sold for $1,500 at Garth’s Auctions in Columbus, Ohio.
When my kids were younger, my superhero power was Amazon Prime. Birthdays and holidays were no problem, as long as I gave myself a 48-hour buffer…and, as long as their lists included toys, books and electronics. But, gift-giving in the adult world requires a bit more planning and a lot more creativity. If you are in need of a gift idea for someone who already has everything Amazon covers, read on. You may need to channel your inner treasurehunter, but your friends and family will cherish these unique and personal items that are sure to become heirlooms.
no advertising category, though, is as broad as signs. The evertrendy barber pole aside, trade signs for optometrists (think striking eyes and swanky glasses), restaurants (hot and fresh?), and clothiers from seamstresses to cobblers offer endless gift-giving possibilities and are definite conversation starters. Where to look? It’s a big category, so just about any antique mall or website will have options, though good trade signs are tougher to find. Try invaluable.com or 1stdibs.com and search “trade sign”, narrowing by date of origin (1880s - 1940s should offer some great choices).
ANY INTEREST, ANY AGE From handmade trade signs to printed tins, advertising memorabilia can be easy to find in a wide variety of interests, allowing you to cover just about anyone on your gift list. Beer signs and good old “Coca Cola” trays may be the first things that come to mind, but, far more sophisticated options are available. We’ve offered store displays at auction that range from holiday items to vintage toys; some of my favorite salesman’s samples include sewing machines and a printing press– perfectly reproduced in miniature and fully functioning. Perhaps
TEA AND COFFEE LOVERS Vintage coffee grinders have had a resurgence in part to America’s obsession with a certain mermaid, and the baristas who man the thousands of stores nationwide. But, beyond the basic (and possibly predictable) gifts for your favorite caffeine-addict, the antiques world has a slew of options. Lithographed tea and coffee tins are a bit later, and may appeal graphically to many, but a finely crafted, turned-wood English tea caddy from the 1700s or 1800s makes a stunning addition to any decor. Popularly produced
60 slmag.net
Clockwise from top left: Store displays and salesman’s samples appeal to anyone who loves a perfectly-reproduced miniature. This tiny breakfront cupboard with verre églomisé panels is a gem, selling for just over $2,000 at Selkirk. Fruitwood tea caddies come in a variety of forms, including sweet shape like apples and pears. This examples dates to the late 1700s and sold for $960 at Garth’s. This French poster featuring the timeless and covetable Bugatti Atlantic sold for $720 at Selkirk in St. Louis.
in fruit-shapes like the pear shown here, examples may also be found inlaid with initials–adding to the personalized touch. Fruitwood tea caddies and coffee grinders are relatively easy to find, but you should expect to pay in the high hundreds to low thousands for very good examples. Again, invaluable.com covers the middle-market of auction houses all over the world, but sites like rubylane.com should have a steady inventory if you are more of a last-minute shopper. SPORTING ENTHUSIASTS One can only rely on Hermès for a few good sporting patterns before the theme starts to wear out, and expecting your recipient to accommodate a vintage fishing rod, saddle or snowshoes into their contemporary decor can be a risky bet. Easier to predict? The smile from receiving a kitschy (or classy!) Animalia artifact, a lovely equestrian print, or a sleek, carved bird decoy. While they are horrified by the obsession, my children know that I love a beautifully complete small animal skull for my growing collection (I know, I know, it’s my repressed scientist nature). And, if you think a cranium
is too macabre for your urban sensibilities, furnishings crafted from antlers can be simultaneously rustic and refined. Care should be taken when buying exotic animal items, as the United States Fish and Wildlife Service monitors certain restrictions on buying, selling and transporting such objects. For this reason, always buy from a reputable auction house or dealer. CAR BUFF Car guys (and girls) can be an incredibly difficult set for whom to shop, with their good eyes for design and quality. If a Ghost is a bit beyond your gift-giving budget, relax and think outside the box with vintage auto posters, car show trophies, and high-quality models. Last year, Garth’s handled the estate of a car collector who had assembled large groups of vintage car tags from European races and framed them in shadowbox frames–a sharp and interesting display. Focusing on a particular make or model can make the process of sifting through a huge online selection a little less time consuming. sl Amelia Jeffers is an nationally-known auctioneer and appraiser who has worked in the fine art, antiques and bespoke collectibles market for over 20 years.

THE KEEP Written by Amelia Jeffers / Photography by James Henthorn
66 slmag.net
When Chef Jonathan Olson trekked to New Orleans over a decade ago, he was charged with the monumental task of re-opening food and beverage service at The Ritz Carlton in the French Quarter after Hurricane Katrina had ravaged the city. While the experience taught him many things, he could not have known how another restaurant concept would call him and ultimately benefit from his immersion in the famously gritty America-takes-France culture of arguably one of the most influential culinary communities in the country. Working alongside an accomplished team based in Atlanta (and led by James Beard Award-winning CEO and Founder of Concentrics Restaurants Robert Amick), Olson has drawn on years of experience which includes not only his time in New Orleans, but noteworthy stints in Napa and Philadelphia as well. These synergies have brought just the right type of high profile, chef-driven dining experience for which the Concentrics team is known.

The Keep Executive Chef, Jonathan Olson
Chef Olson’s passion these days is launching and leading The Keep, the modern French brasserie and bar concepted by the Concentrics team and launched earlier this year as a part of the nearly $30 million renovation of the historical LeVeque Tower at Broad and Front. Similarities between the original and modern construction and use of the iconic structure are astonishing. Built in 1924 amidst a massive revitalization of the Columbus riverfront that included widening the river (sound familiar?), the American Insurance Union (AIU for short) Citadel, as the LeVeque Tower was originally known, housed a large hotel, restaurant, offices, and the landmark Palace Theatre. For almost a century, the Columbus skyline has been marked by the distinctive architecture and festive lights of what was once the fifth tallest building in the world, whose walls once again house a hotel, restaurant, offices and the enduring Palace Theatre. Located on the second floor, The Keep is as warm and cozy as it gets, with a hearty menu that reflects it’s French inspiration, though the emphasis on bourbon and sharables gives it a more modern flair than the traditional brasserie. With an eclectic audience comprised of theatre-goers, business professionals, hotel guests, and denizens of the LeVeque’s luxury Tower Residences, 68 slmag.net
The Keep maintains a vibrant and effortlessly sophisticated atmosphere at all hours. A creative drink menu is reminiscent of the rich history of the notable structure. The Citadel is a delectable bourbon, cherry, lime and ginger beer mixture and recalls the original name of the building, before the LeVeque family took ownership and renamed it. The Leveque 75 pays homage to the year the property was added to the National Register of Historic Places and features local Watershed Bourbon Barrel Gin in a simple presentation of lemon, syrup and cava. Possibly my favorite, Amelia’s Beacon (so named for the lighted tower referenced by the famous aviatrix as a marker when she flew over downtown Columbus) is a lovely concoction of rye, house-made peach syrup, lemon and peach bitters, and absinthe spritz. An interesting twist on the modern beverage-focus in the fine dining arena is The Keep’s ice program - comprised of cubes of infused ice that allow flavors to morph as drinks sit, inviting lingering conversation over luscious cocktails. The wine list is demarcated by “State Side” versus “Across the Pond” and is heavy, as one might expect, on the French options. The list includes just the type of underdogs and best in class and value championed by Master Sommelier Justin Amick (son of Concentrics’ CEO and Founder, Robert).

Poached eggs at The Keep are cooked in a lukewarm bath for up to an hour, producing a beautifully delecate yolk
The appetizer menu is well-suited to the varied demographic, offering a wonderful selection of small plates perfect for splitting. Rich Broiled Oysters are served with bacon, roquefort and persillade, while Lump Crab presents as a lighter option accompanied by avocado, bell peppers, charred green gazpacho, and a bit of brioche. No respectable French menu would overlook a succulent Moules, and The Keep hits it out of the park with an Asian-inspired coconut pernod broth, chunks of lap cheong, salted cabbage, and a grilled baguette for requisite dipping. Truly, though, the Melted Eggplant with golden raisins and pinenuts served in a tiny french oven with a side of grilled za’atar flatbread is not to be missed. Usually not my first choice (apologies for the unsophisticated palate), the Foie Gras Mousse is light and appealing, not too gamey and possessing a very enjoyable texture. From the Raw Bar, the Halibut Ceviche was far and away the favorite of our table, served with coconut, avocado, a variety of peppers, and crunchy corn. Though our tasting selection was already overwhelming, we decided on a return trip to indulge in one of the seafood towers. From the selection of “Mains,” the Whole Fish is certainly the most dramatic presentation. Beautifully served on the vertical, the whole fish is fried crisp and dressed with XO shrimp sauce atop a fresh fattoush. A refreshing alternative to the typically 72 slmag.net
lackluster vegetarian fare often offered by otherwise gourmet establishments is the Lentils & Legumes, one of several dishes that interestingly loop a French-Lebanese influence into the menu. A mirepoix is enhanced with fried chickpeas, smoked mushrooms, tamarind vinaigrette, hazelnuts, and za’atar with labneh. If that sounds like a mouthful - it is, of well-seasoned, warm veggies and earthy flatbread topped with something akin to creme fraiche. Chicken and “Waffles” sets a paillard of the common fowl upon crispy gaufrette potatoes with an unexpected garnish of kale and honey-caper pan sauce. Essential to any brasserie (modern or not), the Steak Frites with bordelaise do not disappoint. “Not Finished” is the menu no one wants to miss, with indulgences like Filled Crepes, a Buckeye Profiterole, Crème Brûlée, and our top choice: Beignets. The scrumptious deep-fried choux pastry arrives in an unpretentious paper sack, generously dusted with powdered sugar and a side of raspberry coulis. Enjoyed with a French press sourced from Luck Bros’ Coffee, the fritters are surely a lift from Olson’s time in NOLA, and we are grateful for the creative license. Open for just about any meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a compelling weekend brunch option), The Keep will certainly become the kind of mainstay a legend like The LeVeque deserves. sl For more information or to view menus, visit thekeepcolumbus.com..

THE FUSE Written by Charlotte Joseph / Photography by James Henthorn
Architect Todd Parker and his wife Jenni laughingly call their home in Granville, Ohio, The Fuse. The renovated 1910 bungalow on the steep slope of College Hill represents not only the fusion of old and new structures, but the blending of their two families. Demonstrated by a design that is both intricate and innovative, the result is a home that accommodates an active family and expresses their sophisticated style. Recognizing how quickly a budget can spiral out of control, Todd approached the project with as much pragmatism and do-ityourself enthusiasm as he could, “given that we had to basically move a mountain.” Clearing their plans through the proper channels (and assuring the neighbors that they intended to retain the distinctive style of the New England-inspired community), earth-moving equipment
74 slmag.net
was brought in to clear the site. The Fuse doesn’t so much “perch” as “nestle” into the hillside. Todd’s favorite picture is of Jenni standing inside the massive, excavated hillside where a two-story garage and office would be built. The back of the original house was removed and replaced by an enormous kitchen with a series of glass bi-fold doors that slide open onto a sheltered patio, complete with wood burning fireplace and cozy furniture that begs for relaxation and connection. Overlooking the patio and just off the kitchen is the mud room. Each of the six members of the family has a storage tower built into a sleekly designed wall, covered in natural walnut plywood with ergonomic finger pulls cut into the doors ensuring no cabinet hardware interrupts the perspective. The polished and waxed concrete floor means easy cleanup for their active family, but
The rehabbed historical bungalow is remarkably open and airy
as Jenni laughs, “no bookbags ever make it into the tower – they are dropped where the kids drop.” Most often the “kids drop” in the kitchen, which is exactly what their parents want. The priority, Jenni said, was to create a place where they could all cook together, sit comfortably, and where “the magic” of their family can happen. The kitchen easily holds a nine foot Calacatta marble island with waterfall end, as well as a long, hand-hewn table that easily seats 12 (but is rarely used). As in other rooms, cabinet hardware was eliminated, highlighting the wood of the custom cabinetry and presenting a modern, clean aesthetic. The only door-pulls in sight are made from a two-foot length of steel with a slight bend courtesy of the “Welder on Wheels” who made frequent visits throughout
the renovation. The simple lengths of steel were a last minute inspiration when the Thermador cabinet-front refrigerators arrived without hardware, and are emblematic of the frequent and creative “make-do” spirit during the construction process. The front of the house is barely separated from the new, thanks to the wide opening into the living room where a fireplace anchors a space designed for comfort and gathering. A game room was carved out for the family is at the opposite end. With light streaming through the historical windows, it’s a special place that features built-in bookshelves and a desk that is generally covered with a lego creation or a puzzle mid-completion. The cabinetry was all designed and built using reclaimed materials. Their children’s artwork is framed and displayed on the far wall.

The mudroom locker system in natural walnut plywood with ergonomic finger pulls cut into the doors
One of the five bedrooms is snugly situated in the back corner of the first level, redesigned from its initial life as the master bedroom into a teen-suite with efficient bath and closet. Just outside the doorway, the old stair-over-stair was completely torn out and replaced with a trap door to the basement (and future home of Todd’s wine cellar as he likes to point out) and a floating stairway to the second floor. The pair's artistic bent and penchant for economy of materials come together in a black steel base for reclaimed threshing-floor wood stair treads that look and feel like they will last forever. The support beams that replaced the wall are covered with family memorabilia, notes, pictures and schedules. At the top of the stair is a striking wall of stacked wood cuts that Todd built using discarded pieces from projects throughout the house, on which Jenni has created a whimsical waterfall of “cannonball” pool photos from family vacations. 76 slmag.net
Kids’ rooms dominate the bungalow-side of the second floor with thoughtful design that takes each personality and interests into account: a sewing station, a platform bunk bed, and vintage library table-turned-lego-central. Jenni’s inspiration and Todd’s vision show a heartwarming dedication for providing personal space for each member of the family. Walking through the only hallway in the open floor plan to the master suite, one passes by an accommodating upstairs laundry and the master closet, where each fixture was designed using materials from other projects in the renovation. Todd’s welding skills provided the hanging bars, and built-in cabinetry topped by walnut slabs (hollowed out for jewelry storage) are true to the clean, modern feel throughout the home. The master bath features glass doors at each end with a walk-in shower and freestanding tub below a window looking over the hillside.
The stunning entry hints at the grand scale and fine detail throughout the home.

A carefully constructed landscape welcomes visitors to The Fuse, the home of Todd and Jenni Parker in Granville
In the corner of the master bedroom is the enviable (and genius) placement of a wine center. Anchoring the large room is the soft-upholstered platform bed, nestled into a wood-lined nook opposite the generous windows. Over the bed is a photograph by Terry Way from inside an ocean wave, a wonderful artistic representation of the dynamic, natural aura of the home and a surprise Christmas gift after a trip to California. Also reflecting Jenni’s unique style and commitment to family is the placement of her grandmother’s chair and ottoman, now covered in black leather, in a sunny and prominent corner of the room. Steps away from the master, and also accessible by a steel stairway from the drive, is Todd’s office above the detached garage. Unfinished maple planks line the walls and ceiling with perfectly constructed joints painstakingly factored for the complicated installation, that can only be attributed to an incredible professional mien and artistic aesthetic. Marked by the smell of fresh-cut wood, stunning views
80 slmag.net
overlooking downtown Granville, and a few of the guitars from the family’s collection (a sentimental legacy from Jenni’s late brother that has spawned several budding musicians), the office is an extension of the unique home and Todd and Jenni’s collaborative style. Every detail at The Fuse comes together in perfect harmony, from the original shake shingles on the historical bungalow to the sleek grey concrete board siding and glazed black brick of the new addition. The wildflower-covered hillside in the front transitions to the (in-progress) terraced hillside out back and retaining wall made with corten steel panels, which are a different color every day - meant to age and change and adapt with the elements. Concrete planters are perfectly comfortable alongside 300 million year old fossils unearthed in the excavation, all shaded by Jenni’s beloved Gold Spire Ginkgo trees and succulent plantings. As we wrap up our tour of the grounds, the dynamic duo reflect on the project, “we just wanted it to be us. We wanted to always be happy to be home.” sl

THE NEW ALBANY CLASSIC INVITATIONAL GRAND PRIX & FAMILY DAY
For the 20th year in a row, Abigail and Les Wexner hosted the New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix and Family Day at their home to raise funds for The Center for Family Safety and Healing. This year’s event raised more than $2 million for the center, supporting initiatives to combat family violence across central Ohio. The event’s 15,000 attendees enjoyed fantastic equestrian events, food trucks, carnival rides, and closed the day with a performance from multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated recording artist Nick Jonas.

DR. FREDERIC BERTLEY
10 Things I Cannot Live Without Dr. Frederic Bertley, affectionately known as “Dr. B”, took over as the new President & CEO of COSI in January 2017, delivering on his reputation for being a powerhouse in engaging diverse communities and lifelong learners in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Bertley, who holds a Ph.D. in Immunology from Montreal’s McGill University, has a passion for bringing science engagement and enlightenment to people where they live, learn, and lounge. Whether providing basic health care in Haiti, presenting as an invited speaker to the United Nations, or engaging locals at a happy hour to discuss the science of cocktails, Bertley transcends the traditional image of a “scientist,” radiating, instead, as a stylish, high-energy thought leader. In Bertley, the roles of scientist, science educator, and CEO all coalesce through an infectious enthusiasm and through high aspirations for creating the next great iteration of COSI as a national leader in science center outreach, innovation and impact. 1. Family. There is nothing more special or important about the relationship, bond, and impact that my family has on my life. 2. Books. I grew up in the “Reading is fundamental” television commercial days during cartoon hours on Saturday mornings. Somehow, and thankfully, it stuck! Top three favorite prose: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings; The Merchant of Venice; and Go Dog Go; (Honorable mention – Green Eggs and Ham). 3. Music. From Mozart to Michael; Mahalia to Mambazo; Rachmaninoff to Ray; Miles to Marley; Wonder to

Winehouse; Ramones to Rihanna; Beatles to Biggie; Celine D to Queen B, or simply Jay Z; there is transformational power in music. 4. Fashion-Style. Shakespeare said it best, “the apparel oft proclaims the man”. What you wear creates a silent dialogue with the world around you, often projecting aspects of your identity. It is fun to curate that non-verbal conversation. 5. Chuck Taylors. To me, Chucks are the best, most comfortable, walk around, stylish shoe ever made. 6. A Foucault Pendulum. This simple apparatus, and we have a beautiful one at COSI, allows me to keep perspective. No matter what is going on in my life, the country or the world, this special pendulum reminds me that our earth continues to spin and another sunrise and new day is just hours away. 7. The eastern view of Downtown Columbus and the Scioto from COSI’s Central High entrance. Simply put, breathtaking. It is definitely one of the most spectacular views of this great city of Columbus. 8. Grill. Vegetables, seafood or jerk-seasoned meats, the grill democratizes cooking and I feel ready for Chef ’s Table. 9. Creativity and Innovation. I love experiencing creativity or witnessing innovation. Whether it is art (Basquiat), science (CRISPR genome editing), business (Airbnb), or conversations with thoughtful and reflective people - having that metaphorical lightbulb illuminate or seeing it in others is just plain cool. 10. One word: DINOSAURS! And how lucky am I that they are here, permanently, at COSI! sl
