George Steinbrenner III buys the New York Yankees from CBS for $12 million Te cost of a gallon of gas is 40 cents US troops withdraw from Vietnam President Nixon signs the Endangered Species Act into law Secretariat wins the 99th Kentucky Derby and goes on to become the frst Triple Crown winner in 25 years Te price of oil quadrupled due to an OPEC embargo New York City’s World Trade Center became the tallest building in the world Te average cost of a new house was $32,500 Watergate hearings began

What do these events all have in common? Tey all occurred in 1973 – the year I was born. Despite my best eforts to outrun (or outright deny) it, the milestone of mid-life is just over 30 days from catching me. And so I go, kicking and screaming, from the twilight of my 30s and into the dawn of my 40s. I’ll have to admit that as the day draws closer my feelings have run the gamut from feeling proud of what I’ve accomplished to date to reconciling how the 30-year-old I still feel inside is now staring out from 40-year-old eyes that are still spectacle free, but likely not for long I’ve been told. I’m guessing that the next to go will be my “boginity”, when the faint whisper of wrinkles cropping up here and there becomes amplifed enough to send even this extremely needle averse gal running straight for the plastic surgeon’s ofce. It’s funny, particularly among women, that in spite of all our accomplishments and accolades we’re all so quick to equate our self-worth to a number on a scale or the lines (or lack thereof ) on our faces! It just so happened that our annual fall fashion photo shoot coincided with this intense period of angst and refection, and certainly there can be no better reminder of the passage of time than standing alongside a gaggle of spindly legged models with porcelain complexions who are half my age (I had to draw the line when one of them politely called me “ma’am”). It’s always amazing to see the girls emerge from the dressing room wearing denim I would have sworn was sized for an American Girl doll! As my personality is naturally inclined to be more of a mindful observer than a social butterfy, I let our team of assembled professionals do what they do best, stepping in occasionally when directions or opinions were warranted. Taking it all in, I was reminded of how good it actually feels not to be 20, as the years since then have allowed me to experience both the highest pinnacles of euphoria and times of personal growth as I mired through the lows. Te old adage about the years of our life versus the life in our years certainly rings true in my case. Should fate smile kindly on me, I’ll spend the next 40 years (hopefully more) continuing to wring the last drop out of each.

Italian Wine Tasting

Written by Scott Harper, Master Sommelier

What better way of having a wine tasting than with the wines of Italy. Italy is one of the old-world countries that has a deep culture in wine and food. In Italy, wine is food, and when someone has had a bit too much to drink, an Italian may say they have not had enough to eat. For that reason I always suggest assorted Salumi for easy and tasty accompaniment for a wine tasting; try Prosciutto di Parma Capicolla, Bresaola and Salame. Some cheeses would be Pecorino Toscana, Taleggio, Parmigiano-Reggiano and Fontina, and the important conduit for both the cured meats and cheeses – quality crusty Italian bread. A few things to have ready for your wine tasting: Good wine glasses are the most important part of your tasting, except good wine. Here it is easy to go crazy with glasses made to go with specifc grapes, and granted, I have many of these. But flling your cabinet with a dozen diferent glasses for a dozen diferent wines and trying to fgure out each is hardly hitting the easy button. So, I say have two glasses to start off. Size is probably the single most important factor. Undersized glasses reduce pleasure, while oversize glasses can enhance it. Glasses should be able to hold at least 12 ounces, but I prefer upwards to 20. We all should be drinking more sparkling wine, and when you do, it should be from the tall fute-shaped glass, as you want the bubbles to stay in the glass. Make sure it can hold at least eight ounces. Pour the glasses about a ffth of the way to allow for swirling and to develop the aroma. A bottle of wine holds 25 ounces. With the intent on everyone trying each wine, one bottle of wine should serve eight guests. So, divide the number of guest you have by eight and round up and you will have how many bottles you will need. Most Americans drink white wines too cold and red wines too warm. Overly chilled whites or too warm reds mask the aromas and flavors and alter the structure. Try serving whites around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, sparkling around 45 degrees Fahrenheit and reds around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Choose your wines. Despite their long and perhaps difcult to pronounce names, these Italian wines are delicious and worth the efort. I have chosen one sparkling, one white and two reds for you. Try them in the order listed for the best experience, as I have listed them from lightest to fullest.

SPARKLING / Brut Cuvée Prestige, Ca’ del Bosco (Franciacorta {Lombardy}, Italy) - Owner Mauricio Zanella took a trip to Champagne in the late 1960s. Tis trip inspired him to eventually start the state-of-the-art cellar unique to this region named Ca’ del Bosco, which means, “house in the woods.” A delicious Italian sparkler, it is dry with an enticing spice favor of allspice and ginger and fruit favors of yellow apple and pear. Its mousse is impeccable with small creamy uniform bubbles that pop out favor in a rich full body. Perfect as an aperitif, it is made from Chardonnay 75 percent, Pinot Bianco 10 percent and Pinot Nero 15 percent. WHITE / Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi Classico “Villa Torre”, Tenuta di Tavignano 2011 (Marche, Italy) - Trough the early 1990s Beatrice Lucangeli and Stefano Aymerich di Laconi, transformed their estate, improving the quality of their vineyards and wine production. Marche is located in east-central Italy on the Adriatic. Very dry, light and crisp, this wine has favors of limestone minerals, straw, lemon zest, white peach and apple. Its color is pale yellow, and it is made from the Verdicchio grape. RED / Chianti Classico Riserva, Famiglia Cecchi 2005 (Tuscany, Italy) - Cesare and Andrea Cecchi are the fourth generation Cecchi’s to be involved in Italian wine. Their ancestor Luigi started in 1893; well-known for having a talented palate, he gained experience as a winemaker, wine broker and exporter. Now the Cecchi family lives and works in the small Chianti Classico village of Castellina in Tuscany, Italy. Made from the Sangiovese grape, this is not a simple wine. Ruby red with an orange rim, it has a fresh nose of violets, ripe red cherry fruit and spice with a dry medium plus body that is round and smooth. RED / Barolo, Paolo Scavino ’08 (Piedmont, Italy) - Enrico Scavino runs this winery that his father founded in 1921, aided by his daughters Enrica and Elisa. Barolo is from the northern Italian region of Piedmont. It is made from the Nebbiolo grape, which is arguably one of the best grapes in Italy for red wine. Te color is garnet/ruby with an orange rim; the wine is dry, tannic, very crisp and full-bodied with the favors of blackberries, cherries, leather, earth and roses. sl A Certifed Wine Educator, Scott is one of 118 professionals in North America and 186 worldwide who have earned the title Master Sommelier.

Curating a Lifestyle: On the Hunt

Written by Amelia and Jef Jefers

Sporting guns such as the over-under shotgun, remain in production today and are sought by gun enthusiasts who use them. Inlaid with a silver deer, this example was produced in the 19th Century by Altoona, Pennsylvania gunsmith J.M. Watson. Sold, Garth’s, $572.

Few other collecting categories have seen such a consistently bullish market as firearms, with buyers today apparently willing to go to any length to win prized examples at auction. Some speculate that the current market is heavily influenced by the political landscape or a powerful NRA (National Rifle Association), but the rise in collectability and value of antique firearms would be difficult to link to either of these factors exclusively. Undoubtedly there is a crossover audience among buyers of modern, functional frearms who may make decisions based on political concerns and the buyers of early, historic examples who are feeding a passionate hobby. Te distinction that could be made is that collectors of antique arms tend to set their sights on historic context, rarity, quality of manufacture and a beautiful design (incidentally, many of the same factors that infuence collectors who purse antique furniture, art and decorative accessories!). Te history of frearms dates back to primitive, hand-held cannon devices in the eastern world; but, for the purposes of discussing the collecting market, we tend to focus on 18th and 19th century arms from America and Europe. Until the Industrial Revolution, the production of frearms was dependent upon cottage industry (albeit some larger than others) of regional gunsmiths who tailored offerings to their audience. Rifles were produced for the long-range accuracy needs of military

34 slmag.net

engagement; the shotgun (and its predecessor, the blunderbuss) were generally reserved for sporting and hunting (or, short-range protection). Once large-scale manufacturers entered the scene in the mid-19th century, the arms race was on. Arguably, no other individuals have had more infuence on the frearms industry in the past 200 years than these trailblazers: Samuel Colt, Horace Smith, Daniel Wesson, Oliver Winchester and John Browning. The eponymous companies created by these men have become virtual powerhouses that continue to dominate the feld today, and whose 19th century frearms are the epitome of a seasoned collector’s focus. As fall approaches, and the traditions of hunting and gathering in advance of an annual Tanksgiving feast come to mind, head out on your own hunting adventure for a beautiful and rugged piece of history to adorn the mantle. With a bit of study, you may be surprised by the options available in this broad category for everyone from a novice collector to the frearms afcionado. sl

Amelia and Jef Jefers are the co-owners of Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers, an international frm located outside Columbus, Ohio.

Generally speaking, frearms that predate 1898 are considered to be “antique” and exempt from the Gun Control Act of 1968 under the regulation of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (commonly known as the ATF). What does this mean for you? It means that the purchase, sale or transport of antique guns can be conducted by individuals and companies without a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and without a background check and other ATF transfer paperwork and procedures. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, particularly when a gun has been modifed to accept modern ammunition, or in the case of some muzzleloaders that were manufactured in a way that will accept modern ammunition. As with any other collecting category, we always recommend purchasing antique frearms from a reputable and knowledgeable resource.

Te Winchester Repeating Arms Company earned its place in frearms history when their rugged, early repeat-fre rifes became known as “Te gun that won the West.” Tis “Yellow Boy” Model 1866 is aptly named due to the unusual use of a bronze alloy for the receiver. Sold, Garth’s, $7,638.

While a sure-fre option (pun intended) for close-range targets, the blunderbuss (Dutch for “thunder pipe”) lacked accuracy beyond about 15-20 yards due to the spray of the ammunition exiting the fared muzzle, and became obsolete by the 19th Century. Tis English example dates to the late 18th / early 19th Century. Sold, Garth’s, $3,525.

Much like antique furniture, the value of antique frearms can be afected by highly fgured wood, solid manufacturing techniques and overall design aesthetic. Tis special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 sold with a letter from the factory in which it was made. Sold, Garth’s, $5,288.

On the verge of bankruptcy due to cotton gin litigation, Eli Whitney applied his concept of interchangeable parts to the manufacture of muskets in the mid 1790’s. After his death, Eli Whitney, Jr. continued to operate the Whitney Arms Company until 1888 when the company was sold to arms behemoth Winchester. Te Whitney-Kennedy lever action rife (manufactured 1879 - 1886) was considered to be one of the most well made of its time. Sold, Garth’s, $4,465. slmag.net

Ferragamo’s Florence A legacy of legendary hospitality is the foundation for the Lungarno Collection Written by Bridget Williams

Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens.

36 slmag.net

A classic tale of an American dream realized, Bonito, Italy native Salvatore Ferragamo moved to the US in 1915 at the tender age of 16. Young, but certainly not green – he made his frst pair of shoes at age nine for his sisters to wear at their confrmation and studied shoemaking in Naples for a year – he quickly gained a loyal following among Hollywood starlets, including Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, Judy Garland and Audrey Hepburn. After studying anatomy at USC to gain insight on how to make his shoes pleasing to both the eye and the foot, he returned to Italy in 1937 and settled in Florence, opening a store in a grand medieval palace, where he extended a hearty welcome to clients that hailed from around the globe.

View of the Ponte Vecchio from a suite terrace at Hotel Lungarno.

Tis history of legendary hospitality and service is the impetus for Ferragamo’s heirs, who have staked a sizeable claim on the luxury travel market in Florence and throughout Italy with the establishment of the Lungarno Collection, encompassing hotels, suites, villas and yachts in the most covetable locales. And, as one would expect from the family of the esteemed atelier, the ft, fnish and attention to detail at each of the properties present themselves as well as the discerning subtleties of a fnely tailored suit. Florence, still the heartbeat of the Ferragamo empire, boasts five properties: Hotel Lungarno (73 rooms and suites), Continentale (43 rooms and suites), Villa Le Rose (a six-bedroom villa), Gallery Hotel Art (74 rooms and suites) and Lungarno Suites (44 suites). While each property is unique and luxurious in its own right, American travelers in particular are drawn to the residential style of Hotel Lungarno, ideally situated on the Arno, the largest river in the region, and offering panoramic views of the famed Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in the city and noteworthy for

the proliferation of goldsmiths and jewelry shops along its span. A well-established hotel prior to becoming part of the Lungarno collection, the Ferragamo family has been sensitive to the property’s history while maintaining its relevancy to the demands of today’s travelers. “Every hotel has a soul – it is born and celebrated, it matures and after some time it may have a face lift and maybe even come out with a new name,” said Valeriano Antonioli, CEO of the Lungarno Collection. “Te very fortunate ones, like the Hotel Lungarno, come to be regarded as Grand Dames.” In Hotel Lungarno’s lobby, touches of saturated navy contrasted with natural linen slip-covered furniture, and creamcolored walls, wainscoting and sailcloth drapery have a cumulative effect of calling to mind the prevailing décor of the Eastern seaboard. Adding to the homey atmosphere are real room keys (versus the electronic credit-card variety) attached to a substantial brass fob that can be left at the front desk when out exploring, as well as more than 400 pieces of art from the likes of Picasso, Cocteau and Bueno that adorn the public spaces and guestrooms.

37

Each of the spacious guest rooms and suites are unique and boast period antiques, marble-clad bathrooms with Salvatore Ferragamo “Tuscan Soul” signature bath amenities (the latter is common among all Lungarno properties), direct and indirect nods to Italian fashion, and unique views over the Arno and ancient Florence. Our Studio Arno room opened to a small vestibule with mini bar, and we were quick to notice the original artwork, period furnishings and other subtle design touches that elevated the space to feeling like our own pied-à-terre. A large sitting room with a sofa bed provided comfortable accommodations for my daughter; closing the substantial draperies suspended from a brass rod that divided the two rooms provided ample privacy for both of us. Exhaustive amenities aside, the room’s greatest attribute was no doubt the view of the Arno ofered from the bedroom’s large windows and small balcony.

With just nine tables, breaking bread at the property’s Borgo San Jacopo Restaurant is an intimate and memorable experience. In her fve years as Executive Chef, Beatrice Segoni has garnered acclaim and a cult following of her brodetto (bouillabaisse's Italian cousin), frittura di pesce and Tiramisu made with patabon, a kind of cooked zabaglione. Both the fsh broth (a hit amongst the many Japanese tourists that visit the city) and fried fsh originate from her Marche roots. Lounge Bar Picteau is popular among well-heeled Florentines looking to unwind after work or partake of afternoon tea and gourmet chocolates (we were pleased to make the acquaintance of none other than Salvatore Ferragamo, Jr. on one evening). A hearty breakfast bufet is served each morning in an airy room on the Arno adjacent to the Lounge Bar Picteau.

Exterior of the Fusion Bar & Restaurant at Gallery Hotel Art

Detail from the library at Gallery Hotel Art.

Opposite the Hotel Lungarno on the Arno and known as the first Italian design hotel, Gallery Hotel Art was co-conceived by architect Michele Bönan (responsible for the design of all Lungarno properties) and art expert Isabella Brancolini to have a sole focus on international photographic art. East-meets-west design elements are expressed through a co-mingling of design elements such as fne linen, cashmere, Asian woods and Tuscan stones. Suites on the upper foors, three of which are two-story and seven of which feature a terrace, are named after a symbol of Florence. Ivory walls with thin horizontal banding, dark stained wood foors, black and white photography, and arenite sandstone bathrooms distinguish the American-sized guest rooms. The chic and cozy library also functions as a breakfast room, where early risers can squeeze their own orange juice; a light luncheon spot; and a casual cocktail lounge in the evenings. from the Mediterranean to mainland China. An American transplant, Karim, the head bartender, is known to draw a crowd as he whips up inventive cocktails with great fourish. With a hip interior intended to appeal to young couples, the Continentale, located near Gallery Hotel Art, is also apropos for fans of minimalist contemporary interior design with a hint of midcentury modern. It followed Gallery Hotel Art as the second Italian design hotel. Nearly half of the property is comprised of a medieval watchtower punctuated with small square windows, and the transition from ancient to new can be noted where the interior wall goes from smooth drywall to painted stone. Te "La Terrazza" Bar and terrace on top of the Consorti tower provides a bird’s eye vantage over Florence. A recurring theme reflected in the artwork throughout the property is a retrospective of Italian fashion of the 1950s; Florence was the site of the frst fashion show in the history of Italian design, during which luminaries such as Ferragamo, Gucci and Emilio Pucci laid the foundation for the “Made in Italy” mystique.

Unique interior design details, such as desks that resemble steamer trunks complete with leather handles made by Florentine artists, beds that can be enclosed in sheer white drapery suspended from a ceiling tract, black and white vintage fashion photography, and side tables with large clock face details complement the modern aesthetic. Book the two-level Consorti Tower Suite and enjoy a soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the dome of the Florence Cathedral. "Feet are an important part of the body, they tell a story about the person to which they belong,” said Salvatore Ferragamo. The divine 80-minute White Cloud Signature Pedicure offered at Continentale’s White Iris Beauty Spa by Daniela Steiner, located inside the base of the ancient watchtower, is beftting a house known for its haute footwear. After a gentle exfoliation, a nourishing mask, a massage of the feet and legs, and pedicure, your story will be one people will be clamoring to hear. Te bliss continues with an après-treatment stint in the Tea Room, located on the hotel’s mezzanine level and outftted with plenty of reading material and oversized chaise lounges oriented to take advantage of river and Ponte Vecchio vistas. A stay at the Italian Renaissance-style Villa Le Rose (from €27,000/week) offers the ultimate in luxury and privacy in Florence. Originally owned by the Medici family in the 15th century, the former Ferragamo family home, situated on 64-acres surrounded by rolling hills of olive groves, has been carefully and thoughtfully restored. dropping surroundings, resplendent with ornate frescoes in all rooms, grand public spaces, private bedroom suites and an abundance of fne Biedermeier antiques. One of the most impressive rooms, the Salla delle Feste salon, can comfortably accommodate 200 guests and has hosted everything from black tie fêtes to family movie nights. Arguably the best amenity is having the expertise of Chef Donatella Zampoli on-site during the duration of your stay. Working with Zampoli and the on-site property manager, a holiday at the Villa is completely customizable. Whether you are looking to stage a seated dinner for two to 400 inside or an al fresco lunch poolside, the experienced team can handle nearly every request. Te afable Zampoli, a passionate culinary artisan, is also a masterful and patient teacher, even helping a cooking-impaired person like myself to make the most delectable risotto I have ever tasted. Custom experiences available to guests of Villa Le Rose include private visits to the nearby Ducati and Lamborghini factories, private wine cellar tastings in the Chianti countryside with an expert sommelier (including the Antinori and Frescobaldi cellars), and hunting excursions for wild boar, pheasant and other game, with the catch of the day expertly prepared by Zampoli.

Guests of all Lungarno Collection properties receive complimentary access to the Ferragamo Museum (museoferragamo. it), while suite-level guests receive a private tour and access to the limited-edition section of the Creations Boutique Santa Trinita Boutique, where historical Ferragamo shoe collections, accessories and a 10% discount on purchases await. Legend has it that located in the basement of the medieval palace Palazzo Spini Feroni, purchased by Ferragamo in 1938 for his company’s headquarters, there is a well in the cellar where Beatrice, the love of Dante’s life, went to fetch water. Te museum ofers a superbly curated life journey of the “shoemaker to the stars,” with pieces selected from over 10,000 models in the museum’s archives and augmented by biennial special exhibitions that explore contemporary fashion themes through Ferragamo shoes. Ferragamo had the foresight to keep a copy of every oneoff shoe he made, making it truly amazing to ogle examples of footwear considered leading edge in the 1930s, and just as fashion-forward and desirable on the feet of a fashionista today. Florence is a place of eternal enchantment, a feeling best summed up by Antonioli, who remarked: “Florence is a city of love, anytime day or night you will fnd people holding hands or kissing. It’s hard not to have that rub of on you.” slmag.net

Cantinetta Antinori – The Antinori family has a 600-year history of involvement in the wine industry and their extensive collection of wines is available by the bottle or by the glass. A 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria, owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini III of West Orange, New Jersey bested 248 historic automobiles from 36 states and 12 countries to claim the Best of Show title at the 63rd annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held along the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Te Packard Twelve is considered by many to be one of the fnest automobiles produced by Packard and one of the most signifcant creations of the Classic Era. Apart from a 2007 win by the 1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster known as the Mormon Meteor, this win marks the frst for an American car in nearly twenty years. "Tat makes this win even more special," said Joseph Cassini III, who also took Best of Show at Pebble Beach in 2004 with a 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet. "It's nice to

see that even the European judges found this car signifcant enough to win Best of Show." The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is most often recognized as the world's premier celebration of collector cars, but an increasing number of new cars also made history here, with more than 20 concepts and new production cars exhibited on the event's "concept lawn"--what is normally the practice putting green in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach. "We're committed to showcasing the very best of the automotive world, past and present," said Sandra Button, Chairman of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. "We want to celebrate the whole of automotive history--and we're thrilled to be making history, too." Impressive performances were recorded among the major auction houses that staged sales throughout the Monterey Peninsula

during the week leading up to the Concours, with some estimates placing the total spent up more than 30% over the previous year. Gooding & Company, ofcial auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, realized more than $53.7 million during the frst of its two Pebble Beach evening auctions. Te company sold a 1957 Ferrari 250 GT 14-Louver Berlinetta for $9,460,000, setting a world record for a Ferrari 250 Tour de France. At RM Auctions, another Ferrari – an ultra-rare 1967 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider – sold for $27.5 million, making it the most expensive car ever sold at auction. The most popular car at Bonhams 16th annual Carmel automotive auction – the longest running sale during the Monterey Peninsula Car Week – in terms of consistent admirers and sales price was a 1931 Bentley 4.5-Liter Supercharged Le

Mans racer from the Charles R.J. Noble Collection. Spirited bidding in the salesroom and on the telephones elicited excitement among the crowd as the car realized $4,647,500 from a private European buyer, resulting in a new record for a production blower Bentley. As the events surrounding the Concours and Monterey Car Week have grown in popularity, the philanthropic arm of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has increased its impact as well, raising more than $1.27 million for its charitable endeavors in 2013, the eighth year in a row that charitable donations have topped the $1 million mark. “We are proud to host an event that not only contributes to the international stage, encouraging automotive excellence, but also returns so much to the local community,” said William L. Perocchi, Pebble Beach Company CEO. sl

Goodwood Festival of Speed Called “the largest motoring garden party in the world,” the Goodwood Festival of Speed, held on a portion of the 12,000acres of manicured grounds that comprise Goodwood House in West Sussex, England, celebrated its 20th anniversary in July and honored one of the world’s most popular sports cars – the Porsche 911 – as its main Central Feature. Over 820,000 Porsche 911s have been built since 1963, and examples of each of its seven generations were present at the 2013 Festival of Speed. The legendary sports coupe has been featured at every single Goodwood Festival: from the frst event in 1993 when an unexpectedly high 27,500 enthusiasts turned-up, to the record 196,000 visitors that attended the world’s greatest celebration of car culture this year. Commanding spectators’ gazes skyward was a bespoke 911-inspired sculpture prominently displayed outside Goodwood House, the seat of the Dukes of Richmond and home to both motor-racing and horseracing tracks, an organic farm, golf course, an aero club, a sporting and social club, and a hotel. than 100 feet into the sky – the tallest in the Festival’s history – the sculpture’s three futuristic white, steel “arrows” raced upwards, each with an example of a 911 at its apex: an early Golf Blue coupe from 1965, a Yellow 2.7 RS from 1973 and an allwheel drive “Type 991” Carrera 4. The Cartier Style et Luxe Concours d’Elegance, the Goodwood Hill Climb, Supercar Run, Moving Motor Show, Soapbox Challenge and the FAB1Million project were among the events included under the Festival of Speed umbrella. Nowhere else on earth could fans see two ex-Campbell Bluebird Land Speed Record cars on display, while taking in Bob Riggle wheeling up the hill in his Hemi Under Glass Plymouth Barracuda, Peter Fonda waving to the crowds from his Easy Rider Harley-Davidson chopper, two-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours and German Touring Car Champion HansJoachim Stuck, current 911 RSR factory team driver Jörg Bergmeister, soap box racers hurtling past Goodwood House, the Vulcan bomber fying overhead, Nico Rosberg doing burnouts in his F1 Mercedes, eight of the current F1 teams, plus

over 150 motor racing heroes: from Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton to Emerson Fittipaldi and Kenny Roberts. Now in its 19th consecutive year, the 2013 edition of the Style et Luxe concours d’Elegance featured 50 headline vehicles from the event’s history selected for their rarity and beauty. After much debate between the judging panel – including Apple designer Jonathan Ive, Oscar-winning film director Hugh Hudson and model Yasmin Le Bon – the overall 2013 Cartier “Best of Show” was awarded to an exquisite 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spyder, entered by J D Classics, a real accolade given the carefully selected competition. Goodwood paid tribute to McLaren on its 50th anniversary, with racing examples of the marque tackling the 1.16-mile hill climb each day. Some 30 supercars sped up the incline, several for the frst time, including the Continental GT3 from Bentley piloted by 2003 Le Mans champion, Guy Smith; Maserati’s GranCabrio MC, GranTurismo MC Stradale four-seater and the new Ghibli, which made its UK debut; and the Rolls Royce Wraith, driven by Justin Law. Bonhams made automotive history at its Goodwood auction when it offered 63 collectors’ motor cars for a staggering £36 million. Tis result made it the highest grossing motorcar auction in Europe. The sale also achieved world auction marque records for both a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Grand Prix at £19.6m and a 1955 Maserati 300 S at £4m. Te W196 becomes the most valuable motor vehicle ever sold at auction, beating by some distance the previous record of £10,086,400 set by a Ferrari in 2011. The Festival culminated in a Timed Shootout on Sunday afternoon up the hill climb course, which features a mix of twists, turns and narrow straights. Festival favorite Justin Law posted a blistering time of 45.95 seconds in his Jaguar XJR8/9. However, the overall Festival Fastest Time of Day in a nail-biting 45.86 seconds was shared jointly by Gregory Gilvert in a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak and the Goodwood Hill Climb record holder Nick Heidfeld in a Lola-Toyota B12/60. Te Great Artdoors Bespoke Global’s leisure line speaks to sporting connoisseurs

Launched in May 2011 as an international e-commerce platform for topdrawer bespoke home furnishings and accessories, Bespoke Global flls an important niche: connecting some of the world’s most talented artisans with visionary consumers who appreciate their unique skill sets. At present, 90 artists and designers are represented, encompassing everything from porcelain and stoneware to casegoods crafted of rare and exotic materials. “Our global artisans challenge, mystify and entertain,” said company co-founder Gwen Carlton. “Teir toil is part playground, part laboratory and part untamed territory. We embrace bespoke for refusing to give in, for all its refned beauty, genius and surprise.” The company debuted a new leisure line in December of 2012 with a lineup of completely customizable kayaks, canoes, falconry hoods, fly fshing rods, backgammon boards and game tables. Te pieces are designed for sporting connoisseurs seeking to add an exclamation of artistry to their activities. Nick Schade’s “strip-built" wood kayaks are a perfect example: built for high performance paddlers, after a day on the water it would be a shame to relegate its storage to anywhere that didn’t let one admire the boat’s exquisite craftsmanship. Te Museum of Modern Art agrees; it has one of Schade’s functional works of art in their permanent collection. Te artisan’s Petrel collection, created exclusively for Bespoke Global, pays homage to the petrel bird, a tube-nosed seabird named after Saint Peter by early fsherman for its habit of futtering along the surface of the water as it feeds. Tough Schade’s "Petrel" is designed to walk on water during late season swells, it is also suitable for futtering across more sheltered waters. Greening the Bluegrass An urban oasis fve decades in the making Written by Bridget Williams Photography by Andrew Kung

Directly behind the home a garden with covered areas culminates at a summer kitchen and covered pavilion.

Growing up on Rodesia Farm in Harrodsburg, Georgia Rodes developed a deep appreciation for verdant, wide-open spaces; a feeling not realized but often remembered when she moved to a nondescript ranch home in a suburb of Lexington in the 1960s. Others who found themselves in a similar situation may have lamented the loss of elbowroom and the not always sightly appearance of the neighbors’ yard and garage as viewed from their windows. Rather than resign her fate, Georgia did something about it: she purchased the homes on either side of her own, donated one for removal, had the other torn down, and in their places created a private oasis of her own design in the city.

Unrecognizable from its humble beginnings, the home has been modifed over the years, nearly tripling in size as it branched out to allow each room to take full advantage of prime positioning within the carefully manicured hedges and perennial plantings. A trio of circle driveways provides ease of entry and access, particularly for guests during one of her frequent parties or garden tours. Inside, double-coved ceilings adorned with dentil molding and ample skylights create a heightened feeling of spaciousness and compensate for the diminutive scale of some rooms by expanding up instead of out. The home is a repository of treasured family antiques representing a wide range of periods and styles and Georgia recently enlisted the services of the Lee W. Robinson Company to refresh the interiors. A voracious reader of magazines, Georgia maintains organized files of clippings

that have served as inspiration for her projects over the years, including the most recent renovation. “The whole home is steeped in Kentucky history,” said Robinson. Each room has been altered to some degree, including the foyer, where the front door was centered in the façade and half windows on either side of the door were replaced with ones that stretch nearly floor-to-ceiling. “If I was building a house today I would have 12-foot ceilings and 10-foot windows,” said Georgia. Te windows are further accented by new drapery that hangs from Lucite curtain rods. Considered among her most prized possessions, a trio of family portraits depicting Jewett family ancestors hangs above a Queen Anne desk. Commanding attention by its prominent positioning on the rosewood center hall table with gilded paw feet is a Minton majolica jardinière.

In the living room, a clear blown glass chandelier is suspended in the center of an octagonal ceiling cove with skylight. A second square cove and skylight are found in an anteroom with garden access. Colors of the Vermilion rug and foral upholstery echo nature’s splendor just outside the windows.

Serving as the impetus for the entire project, the needlepoint acorn-print rug from Vermilion that Lee selected for the entry set in motion a more extensive renovation. “It helped get my feet wet and then we eased into the rest of it,” explained Georgia. Te virgin wool rug and its matching counterpart in the adjacent library were hand-stitched by Brazilian artisans. Appearing to snake across the dining room table, an antelope horn and silver gimbal cigar lighter Georgia received as a wedding gift makes for an interesting conversation piece. Te provenance of the freplace mantel can be traced to Calumet Farm. A portrait of William Washington Shelby keeps watch over the sideboard. Skylights and tall windows flood a small bay, where elegantly pleated drapery in the same cream color as the walls accentuates the room’s extensive use of molding and trimwork. A pair of bedrooms are located to the left of the foyer, separated by a powder room with ornate Sherle Wagner polished brass hardware. The rear wall of Georgia’s bedroom provides unobstructed views of the garden. Te home’s original dining room is now a cozy library and pass through to the solarium, which was extensively renovated. 84 slmag.net

Bringing the essence of the garden inside, Robinson Kelley, a concierge residential renovation and construction company, fabricated trellis screens and afxed them over mirrored panels on the wall and ceiling. “Tey were a joy to work with,” remarked Georgia, who began considering the idea of adding a trellis detail to the room after noticing the design element appear more frequently in magazine features. A framed drawing on one wall depicts her late husband’s home in Danville where a portion of Civil War epic “Raintree County”, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift was flmed in 1956. A sliding door with a gorgeous polished brass pull from P.E. Guerin on either side (a detail Robinson refers to as “a Cartier bracelet for doors”) leads to a galley bar built by Joseph Fields. Mirrored wall panels opposite the bar conceal a powder room and a closet. From the bar one travels to a large formal living room, where a clear blown glass chandelier is suspended in the center of an octagonal ceiling cove with skylight. A second square cove and skylight are found in an anteroom with garden access. Nature’s splendor just outside the windows is echoed in the colors of the Vermilion rug and foral upholstery.

In the winter you are most likely to find Georgia in the solarium, but any other time when weather permits, you’re apt to spy her in the garden, a environ she considers essential to her quality of life. Cordoned of from busy Mason Headley Road by an eight-foot-tall brick wall, the minute you pass through the iron gates, it’s easy to forget the steady stream of cars whizzing by. Georgia is quick to give Stephen Hillenmeyer Landscape Services credit for doing the heavy lifting: 95% of the plantings were installed by his frm, an award-winning collaboration that garnered national recognition from the American Nursery and Landscape Association. In addition to Hillenmeyer, contractor Robert Cox was responsible for elements of the hardscape, including an arbor, tool shed and gazebos at either end of the garden. Focal points are too numerous to mention in their entirety, and encompass fne English Haddenstone planters and benches as well as iron pieces, many sourced from Joe Ley antiques in Louisville. Positioned on a wall protected by an arbor is a rare molded copper panel of a Native American that once adorned the edifce of the Hotel Commodore in New York City, Warren & Wetmore’s beaux-arts architectural triumph (now the Grand Hyatt New York). Hedged pathways of brick and slate invite

one to meander and discover. Capable of seating a dozen guests, a large gazebo with iconic columns supporting the roof and located to the right of the home seems to cajole cooling winds even on the steamiest summer afternoon. Directly behind the home a garden with covered areas culminates at a summer kitchen and covered pavilion. A pair of doors in the nearby l’Orangerie conceals a powder room and Georgia’s ofce, which is decorated to refect her past afliation with horses and farm life (her great grandfather felded a horse in the frst Kentucky Derby). An undulating brick knee wall on either side of a bell roof gazebo separates a perennial garden from the lawn to the left of the residence. Further exploration is rewarded with access to a knot garden positioned near the rear wall. Te long vista culminates in an ornately accented Haddenstone bench. Georgia’s pursuit of perfection as it relates to her passion is relentless, and while she values the privacy afforded by her personal Eden, she is also generous in sharing its beauty, having hosted charity events, garden clubs, a few weddings and even an occasional unannounced and misinformed visitor. “I’ve had people knock on the door because they thought this was either a museum or a memorial garden,” she said with a laugh. sl

Te Sporting Art Auction Written by Bridget Williams A National Historic Landmark, a Thoroughbred racetrack, an auction company and a philanthropic tour de force that has contributed more than $18 million for the benefit of civic and equine-related non-profits throughout Kentucky, Keeneland holds a very vaunted position among its peers. Responsible for selling more champions and stakes winners than any other Thoroughbred auction house, its four annual sales attract the attention and pocketbooks of an increasingly global audience. To enhance the auction experience for the discerning buyers in attendance at the fall and winter sales, Greg Ladd of Cross Gate Gallery and Walt Robertson, Vice President of Sales at Keeneland, struck a unique partnership to present The Sporting Art Auction, a new company that will host an inaugural Sporting Art Auction on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the historic Keeneland Sales Pavilion. 92 slmag.net

“Tis Sporting Art Auction has the potential to become the most important of its kind in the world,” said Ladd, who, as the collection’s curator, has traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad for the past six months to acquire an impressive collection of 174 lots. “Greg is widely recognized as one of the world’s experts on sporting art, so we are fortunate to partner with someone of his caliber on this project,” added Robertson. Given the equine interests of the Keeneland auction patrons, there is an obvious focus on “sporting” paintings and sculpture by British and America artists. Among the notable pieces in the sporting category are Blue Prince II With Harry Carr Up On Newmarket Heath, a 26 ½” x 39 ¼” painting by Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959); Flat Racing, an 84” x 204” glazed ceramic tile mural by LeRoy Neiman (1921-2012) commissioned in 1976 by Charles W. Bidwill, Jr. for Sportsman’s Park in Chicago; Te Grand Jockey, a bronze sculpture by Isidore

Frank Weston Benton (American, 1862-1951) - A Northwest Day - Oil on canvas, 36"x44" (est. $500,000 - 700,000)

Bonheur (1827-1901); and, Secretariat, Heading to the Track, Te Preakness, a 19”x23” pastel by Andre Pater (b. 1953). Ladd has also assembled an outstanding range of notable American realist and impressionist painters, including Mary Cassat (1845-1926), Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) and a trio of Wyeth’s: Andrew (1917-2009), Jamie (b. 1946) and N.C. (1882-1945). Cassatt’s Children Playing With A Cat is noteworthy as it represents one of her more complex paintings on record and displays a new style of color experimentation in comparison with her other work of this period. Marsh Hawk, a 30.5”x45” tempera on masonite by Andrew Wyeth achieved the highest price ever paid for a living American painter at the time it was sold at Sotheby’s in 1981. The massive scale and brushwork of A Northwest Day, a 36”x44” oil on canvas by Benson places it amongst the most important pieces he completed. “We have all the right elements to make it a success—a world-class venue in Keeneland which provides in-house

expertise in conducting major auctions, and the ability to reach the most enthusiastic sporting art collectors in the world through Keeneland’s racing and sales clientele,” said Ladd. Keeneland’s portion of the auction proceeds will benefit its nonprofit initiatives, including the Keeneland Library Foundation. “We saw this as an opportunity to do something good for the industry and community,” Keeneland president Bill Tomason said. “Everything from the art auction will go to our charitable giving arms. Tis is a project I’m very proud of.” Te 2013 collection will be on display in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion beginning with the September Yearling Sale (September 9-21) and continue through the auction’s November 20th sale date. Te Sporting Art Auction company welcomes inquiries through its website, thesportingartauction. com; by email, info@thesportingartauction.com; or through Cross Gate Gallery, (859) 233-3856. sl

PLEASURE PALETTE We dine at Relish and discover an exotic spectrum of favors Written by Dr. Matthew Bessen Photography by Andrew Kung Most artists would be dismayed to unwrap a new box of watercolor paint and discover the primary colors – red, blue and yellow – had been left out. On the other hand, a few feisty individuals would summon their enthusiasm and embrace the challenge of creating a masterpiece using unfamiliar tones from infrequently visited corners of the paint box. Tis was the reaction of Susan Seiller as she confronted her father’s diagnosis of heart disease. In her long experience as a restaurant proprietor, she had leaned on the familiar tripod of salt, sugar and fat, the apex of which has been called the “bliss point.” But, for a family member with a bad heart, these three essential elements of traditional cooking had been converted into pitfalls. Solving this puzzle started Seiller on the culinary journey that lead to Relish, her new River Road eatery. Ellana and I were her dinner guests. We were guided through nine courses. Only our dessert, baker Loryn Kipp’s cookie trio, used butter and sugar (among these a sumptuous “Pay Day” style treat.) Te rest succeeded splendidly by dipping a fgurative paint brush into the cyan and magenta of the chef ’s palette, replacing familiar blue and red.

A bowl of Prince Edward Island mussels had little in common with the traditional Gallic exposition of white wine, garlic and butter. Instead, there was jerk coconut broth and safron. Te latter gave the fesh a distinctive rich color that made me think of onionskin. Te smooth shaped shells made the individual mussels look quite at ease in the intimate company of their neighbors and were festooned with a rainbow of decoration: slender red and yellow rings of sliced Fresno chilies and greens ranging from pale cubes of Granny Smith apple, shocking wedges of lime and forest-toned leaves of cilantro. This tropic-inspired appetizer gave way to spices of the Near East. An ofering bearing the humble name “Flatbread arrived on a platter bearing precise rectangles stacked in a pattern of alternating bricks and slathered with lamb sujuk. Tis term indicates ground meat topping on a pastry, often containing garlic, cumin or sumac. In this case, the thin bread, crisp-bordered and soft in the center, supported not only the rusty colored lamb, but green fecked mint pesto, a snow fall of crumbled feta cheese and stripes of pomegranate molasses inscribing 45 degree angles across the orthogonal flatbread. The peppery sweetness of the sauce and bold favors of lamb and mint made this a muscular dish beftting its presentation. The Relish version of the crab cake was similarly endowed with high intensity favors. Te meaty crab cake itself had an artfully caramelized surface and formed the top tier of a vividly colored composition: a center of apple mango relish with bits of red onion and avocado, a platform of arugula leaves, and beneath it all, graceful swaths of sriracha and honey sauce on a white plate like sume-i calligraphy from a Japanese ink wash painting. 100 slmag.net

When Seiller insisted that Ellana and I try the Tom Kha, I efortlessly assented with my most knowing and sophisticated facial expression, hoping to hide the words that instantly registered in my head: “What is that? Fortunately, my long experience of international dining had introduced me to pleasures like galaktobouriko and baba ganoush, so I expected something particularly tasty. What I got was a compact bowl of chamois colored broth infused with coconut milk and lemongrass, sporting wood mushrooms and velvety shreds of chicken. Among all the things we tasted, this fawless amalgam was the most unassuming in appearance and the most potently savory. Without heat or pepper or brininess, this pleasing dish assaulted the senses in an unforgettable fashion with which I was totally unfamiliar. Back on the well-trodden path of the Mediterranean themed salad, I was favored with a creation which relied on meticulously conceived presentation and reverence for the special favor vegetables possess when they are at fresh from harvest. A green bird’s nest composed of a vortex of haricot verts, interwoven with prickly rocket leaves was moistened by mellow vinaigrette and ringed by a halo of grape tomatoes. Te vibrant refreshing favor of the beans was undiminished by a sprinkling of Kalamata olives and feta. I was struck by the uniformity of equally sized tomatoes, olives and craggy nuggets of cheese, as well as the way their favors contrasted with the engaging bitterness of the rocket leaves.

Ellana’s scallop trio was another triumph of planning with attention paid to contrasting flavors, textures and appearance. Three miniature towers were aligned on a rectangular plate, composed of a delicate slice of baguette drizzled with thin ribbons of balsamic reduction, simulating grill marks, a citrus-favored “cement” made from dainty beans and pencil thin pieces of asparagus, and crowned by a plump scallop covered in a verdant smear of tarragon sauce. I enjoyed a memorable salmon entrée, this time a single vertical composition. Te seared fsh had an intense Asian-infuenced ginger miso crust, rested on a black rice shitake cake coated in a layer of Tai-inspired Bengalese cabbage. Te mingling of the distinct bold favors competed for my interest with the diverse textures of the slightly gummy rice, the cabbage leaves, which stayed crisp in the midst of a sweet sauce, and the frm salmon fesh. Te kicker was the pea shoot garnish, a brassy garden favor peeking up alongside the more substantial components of this dish. Chef Beeson’s Berkshire pork chop was another attention getter. At least an inch thick, it was decked out in a glistening mahogany-hued molasses mustard glaze and rested in tilted fashion atop spinach calaloo and mashed sweet potatoes. Tis holiday meal profle, well known to many Kentuckians, was made all the more familiar by a striking garnish of paper thin arcs of crisp white apple, arrayed to suggest a magnolia blossom resting on the ridge of a woman’s diagonally oriented derby hat. Ellana and I were pleased that the commitment to an expansive and untraditional favor palette, which inspired the Relish menu, had a place for ingredients and tastes that might be found close to home. sl slmag.net 105

HIGHLANDS RENAISSANCE Interior Designer Ron Wolz of Bittners champions the revitalization of an aging beauty Written by Bridget Williams Photography by Andrew Kung

108 slmag.net

Even when they considered the peeling plaster, sagging ceilings and a second foor sleeping porch precipitously perched on a pair of rickety L-brackets, there was something about the original steel French doors in the living and dining rooms that held an irresistible appeal to the owners of a gracious three-story stuccoed home on a leafy boulevard near Cherokee Park. “Tose doors sold me on the house,” said the husband. Though an oft-used adage, the home’s “good bones” were indeed an ideal canvas from which architect Dan Fultz, contractor Keith Morley of Don Johnson Contractors and interior designer Ron Wolz of Bittners wrought a transformation that is mindful of historic integrity while fulflling the needs of a vivacious young family. As part of the renovation, porches were reconfigured, the driveway relocated, the foor plan opened up to enable a

circular fow from one side of the home to the other and an addition allowed for the expansion of the kitchen, a new family room, garage and ofce/lounge for the husband. What they did not alter were the steel doors; when combined with the dark wood foors and walls with just a hint of color to set of the white trim, they evoke an atmosphere simultaneously timeless and cosmopolitan. In the couple’s previous home, the wife expressed her penchant for 1940s-era design with lots of antique pieces. For this home, she wanted the interiors to project a more youthful and comfortable ambience, which gave Wolz a virtual clean slate to acquire all new furnishings and accessories, a rare treat for an interior designer. “This is such as special house with an amazing flow, so starting from a blank slate was perfect,” he added. slmag.net 109

During initial consultations, Wolz and the wife were literally on the same page; the two often brought the exact same page torn from a magazine to illustrate their preferred interior design direction. “Te proportion of the rooms, along with the unique door details and large windows are ideal for light and fresh colors,” said Wolz. Adding visual heft to the ethereal colors in the dining room is a new stone freplace mantel. Tough the freplace in both the living and dining rooms were added decades after the home was built, the carefully chosen mantel in each room eradicates any sense they are not original. An abstract artwork by Jackson, Mississippi-based mixed media artist William Goodman that rests on the mantle perfectly encapsulates the interior design aesthetic: largely neutral with just the right 110 slmag.net

amount of playful pops of color. An ill-conceived L-shaped porch once adjacent to but not able to be accessed through the dining room was removed and replaced with a comfortable sunroom that provides an intimate spot for an aperitif. Opposite the dining room, the color palette of the living room conjures the varied shades of green that appear in the treetops and on lawns at the onset of spring. “With so much of the park at the doorstep, the large windows really pull in the green, a color [the wife] is really fond of,” explained Wolz. Interior window mullions are painted black (as they are in the dining room as well), to mimic the steel doors. Wolz pointed out that the black actually draws the eye outside rather than white, which typically serves as a visual stopping point.

An abstract landscape painting by John Beard is positioned over the sofa in the living room. Te Murano glass chandelier was purchased at auction from the estate of Louisville artist Stephen Irwin. Ikat drapery and upholstery on the club chairs is from Tibaut.

Te wife has a particular penchant for sourcing the perfect lighting fxtures and she is particularly pleased with the Murano glass chandelier in the living room, which was purchased from the estate of Louisville artist Stephen Irwin. Wolz chose woven ikat fabric from Tibaut for the drapery and the upholstery on the club chairs. Te Greek Key-infuenced design of the drapery is repeated on the Stark carpet. An abstract landscape painting by John Beard is positioned over the sofa. A second set of steel French doors leads to a sitting area that serves as an intimate extension of the living room and was created when the second-foor sleeping porch was converted to living space. An obvious focal point is a pair of handsome steel support columns that were custom fabricated for the project. Here the pervasive

accent color is an oceanic blue-green hue expressed primarily through a round leather upholstered ottoman that is surrounded by four upholstered club chairs with nailhead detail and ikat accent pillows. Te wife’s future plans for the space include adorning the walls with artwork acquired during their travels. The expanded kitchen and living room function as one, and it is here where you are likely to fnd one or more family members spending some downtime. The Falk Manor House velvet upholstery in coral on ivory from ScalamandrÊ on the ottoman in the family room served as inspiration for the other accent colors. A space that was once an ill-conceived L-shaped porch adjacent to but not able to be accessed through the dining room is now a comfortable sunroom.

Te foyer was enlarged during the renovation. Dark wood fooring and walls with just a hint of color to set of the white trim evoke an atmosphere simultaneously timeless and cosmopolitan.

Wolz refers to the kitchen as “thoroughly modern with classic elements.” A large Cararra marble-topped rectangular island with a round dining table integrated at one end bisects the space. Stained wood built-ins with mirrored doors contrast the white cabinetry and hearken to the era of the home’s construction. Culled from the formerly scrubby rear yard and fnished just before Derby, a series of stone terraces steps down to a swimming pool and pool house with an epicurean outdoor kitchen. An existing arbor at the rear of the property was refurbished, as was the original gate, the latter of which required stripping of layer after layer of paint. Stonemason Wayne Grubbs is credited with the meticulous handiwork involved in building the massive stone freplace that anchors a seating area near the outdoor kitchen. While the wife set the direction for the interior design in the main residence, the man of the house was given free rein to create a personal retreat located in a vaulted room over

the garage. A winding stair leads to a curved door crafted in the Spanish Colonial Revival Style. Inside, an iron chandelier with leather straps is suspended between rustic hand-hewn ceiling beams that are complemented by wide-plank reclaimed hardwood foors. A Murphy bed on one wall, a large bar with mini-kitchen and a full bath with steam shower allow the space to do double duty as a self-contained guest suite as well. Tough a favored get-away for the husband, the wife admits to stealing away to the peace and quiet every so often as well. Though a tremendous undertaking, the couple remains pleased with the end result. “It took a long time but we did everything just how we wanted it,” said the wife. By preserving the home’s integrity and having the design of each room built upon a neutral foundation, Wolz points out that future changes will be much less arduous. “Swapping out accent colors is a breeze,” he added, though it’s unlikely the homeowners will make any alterations to their chic environs anytime soon. sl slmag.net 119

Dr. John N. Lewis House, National Historic Landmark, Circa. 1838

Atteberry Smith Homeplace opening winter 2013

s the British ships retreated for a second time and the War of 1812 came to a close, the United States began a 50 year period of peace and the great experiment of “democracy” resumed. Thomas Jefferson, a few years earlier, guided young architects to emulate the classic forms of the Greek temples as they designed our nation’s capital. The Greek Revival Period of Architecture ushered in an unprecedented building spree in which most of the great buildings of our country were erected.

A

Young Americans moved west in great numbers searching out new opportunities and claiming rich farmlands of the Midwest. In 1838, Dr. John N. Lewis moved his family from Albemarle, Virginia and settled just a few miles from the bustling rivertown of Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Lewis built his home less than a mile away from Locust Grove, the place where his famous cousin Meriwether Lewis and William Clark started their famous journey to conquer the west.
