TRAVELINK

Luxury Division

The

Holy Grail of

commercial flights The Residence

Staying at the finest 5-star hotels, eating at Michelin Star restaurants, flying first-class, and receiving exceptional service, are all items found amongst the wish lists of some of the most sophisticated travelers. For many of my clients, experiencing the journey in a comfortable manner, not just the destination, is an essential element to an extraordinary vacation. Over the years, I’ve found it interesting how many clients enjoy the privileges of luxury vacations, however, few have experienced luxury in the journey to its full potential. When it comes to traveling through the sky, our domestic airlines are regularly earning bad press for their services while the Asian and Middle Eastern carriers continue to win service awards. One airline sets itself so far apart from the others, it has recently become a bucket list item on its own so I wanted to share it with you, and if you’re interested, I would love to help you c Imagine boarding a 20+ hour flight from New York City to Sydney, Australia, and finding yourself in a private threeroom suite in the sky, for two, equipped with a living room, separate double bedroom, ensuite shower and your own personal butler for the duration of the flight. This is the level

of luxury you will experience flying in The Residence cabin by Etihad Airways, an Abu Dhabi based airline, and partner of ours here in the Privileged Journeys team at Travelink, American Express Travel. The bespoke travel experience Etihad has created in the commercial airline industry has completely redefined what luxury means for air travel. Your experience begins as soon as you enter the airport through a private entrance where you are greeted with a warm Etihad welcome by your personal airport lounge Butler. Yes, guests flying in The Residence have their own private lounge within the Etihad First Class lounge to truly be set apart and enjoy quiet comfort with a gourmet meal delivered by the chef, a master cocktail, then a massage before being driven in a buggy to board the flight. As you enter the gate, your inflight butler will walk you onboard the aircraft, and help store your luggage within discreet compartments under the seating areas within your cabin. Once your journey begins, sit back and watch a movie on your HD flatscreen TV with noise-cancelling headsets while relaxing in the living room or tucked into the luxurious linens on the bed from Pratesi of Italy. Order beverages served in exquisite Vera Wang glassware and enjoy the gourmet menu with items prepared by the Inflight Chef upon Bernardaud porcelain china. After a good night’s sleep, freshen up in your ensuite shower room and get ready to take on your destination well rested and ready for the adventure.

VIP Travel Concierge Service The VIP Travel Concierge service takes care of guests booked into The Residence from the moment of reservation right through until the end of your stay. From a luxury chauffeur to private check-in and lounge, they have designed every part of the travel experience to be seamless and discreet.

3-Room Private Suite in the Sky Living Room - The living room has a luxurious leather doubleseat sofa and two dining tables. Enjoy an intimate meal for two, or watch your 32-inch flat-screen TV through noise-cancelling headsets, as you dine. Bedroom - The hallway leads to a bedroom with a full size double bed, with designer Italian bed linen. Get comfortable and watch a movie on your 27-inch flat-screen TV with noise-cancelling headsets or enjoy breakfast in bed among the clouds. Ensuite Shower Room - Before landing, freshen up in your ensuite shower room with full-height shower, luxury amenities and bathrobes. A vanity unit with a magnifying make-up mirror and hair dryer lets you complete your preparation for arrival.

Etihad Butler & Inflight Chef On board, your Savoy-trained Etihad Butler will ensure a tailored experience, looking after you from take-off until touchdown. Let the Inflight Chef prepare a personalized dining experience for you, using the freshest of ingredients. Choose from a range of gourmet menu options or ask for your favorite dish.

The Residence by Etihad Airways is unlike any other experience on the ground or in the air. I highly recommend this airline for clients looking for a truly luxury experience, in any class of ticket. I would be honored to help answer any questions you may have about the airline and provide you with additional details on pricing and availability. I will happily custom craft any of your dream Anna Bright vacations into reality. Manager, Personally Crafted Vacations Direct: 615-277-5197 anna.bright@travelink.com

HAUTE HIGHLIGHTS FROM PARIS COUTURE FASHION WEEK By Bridget Williams

ABE by Ariane Chaumeil For her most recent haute couture collection, which melded art glass with metal and feathers, designer Ariane Chaumeil looked to the past for inspiration. A self-taught glass artisan, Chaumeil has described her desire to express herself artistically as an “emergency”. “I have been an autodidact since childhood; the thirst of discovering and the curiosity brought to me so many artistic experiences. Beauty and eternity are the meaning of my work. From them is born the collection,” she explained. slmag.net

33

Ewa Minge Highly tactile and visually appealing with its broad color range, Polish designer Ewa Minge’s luxe “bohemian-esque” couture collection incorporated fur, wool, lace and silk embellished with floral prints, butterflies and fanciful embroidery.

Imane Ayissi The inspiration for the collection was driven by a Namibian ethnic group called the Herero, and more precisely by Conflict and Costume, a book by Jim Naughten. Herero women are known for their dresses, hand-stitched, like a piece of couture fashion, from hundreds of pieces of fabric. The collection included seven winter outfits, available for purchase at lago54.com, couture pieces (some of which are comprised of 238 pieces of fabric), and RTW.

34 slmag.net

Laskaris The prism serves as the key to open the door to the collection of Greek designer Laskaris, whose multiple facets, are, according to the designer, the meaning of life. The primary color palette of black, red, white and gold was expressed in linen, cashmere and leather. Enamel details were handmolded at his atelier in Athens. “My work is only a reflection of what I think, I feel, I try and realize…Knowing how to see a situation with the eyes of the spirit is the best way to see it with the greatest objectivity possible. To see means to conceive, and that is the true nature of thought,” he said.

35

Ziad Nakad For his winter couture collection, Ziad Nakad proposed his romantic vision of a magically colorful season where white predominates, appearing cold as snow and gradually heating up when velvet, feathers, tulle and lace are introduced and interwoven with intricate embroidery. Carefully placed sensuous cut-outs were designed to reveal a bewitching femininity. Most memorable was his finale gown: a bride gliding down the runway reigning as queen of an exceptional night.

36 slmag.net

Maria Aristidou The inspiration for Maria Aristidou’s couture collection for fall/winter 2017-18 was "Belle âme - a beautiful soul". The designer said it represents the story of a woman that is strong and can conquer the world in the face of adversity. Knit patterns, cozy wool and metallic yarns were highlighted by both elaborate embroidery and soft curves with unexpected details and sleek cuts.

Patuna Inspired by the buildings of Spanish modernist architect Antoni Gaudí and the artwork of surrealist painter Salvador Dali, the silhouettes in Patuna’s couture collection oscillated between rigor and fluidity to play on the contrast of feminine and masculine contrast. Fabrics of silk, wool, velvet and cotton in a color palette that ranged from black and pale pink to gray, cardinal violet and white highlighted the flexibility and adaptability of the looks. sl

INSIGHTS ON

DESIGN Marc Lichte, Head of Audi Design talks about the new Audi A8 Written by Andre James The new Audi A8 made its world debut this past July at the Audi Summit in Barcelona. This fourth-generation flagship model is the first production automobile in the world to have been developed for highly automated driving. From 2018, Audi will gradually be taking piloted driving functions such as parking pilot, garage pilot and traffic jam pilot into production. The traffic jam pilot manages starting, accelerating, steering and braking. The driver no longer needs to monitor the car permanently. They can take their hands off the steering wheel and, depending on the national laws, focus on a different activity that is supported by the car, such as watching the on-board TV. As soon as the system reaches its limits, it calls on the driver to take back control of the task of driving. The Audi AI remote parking pilot and the Audi AI remote garage pilot steer the A8 independently into and out of a parking space or garage, monitored by the driver. The driver need not be sitting in the car. They start the appropriate system from their smartphone using the new myAudi app. To monitor the parking maneuver, they hold the Audi AI button to watch a live display from the car’s 360 degree cameras on their device. Once the maneuver has been completed, the system automatically engages the tiptronic P position and switches off engine and ignition. We asked Marc Lichte, Head of Audi Design since 2014, to share his thoughts on the new design era ushered in for the entire brand with the unveiling of the new Audi R8. How important is the unveiling of the new A8 for Audi design? Marc Lichte: With the world premiere of the Audi A8 in Barcelona, we will have come full circle. From the perspective of a designer, this is a place that stands out because of its special light conditions. Precisely for this reason, this is where we selected the design of our flagship car, together with our Board of Management, three years ago. The A8 is the first production model showing the future design language and, as a result, it fundamentally reflects the progressive face of the brand. 38 slmag.net

Speaking of progressive: how would you define that term? Marc Lichte: At Audi, the design always expresses Vorsprung durch Technik “Advancement through Technology”. To me, a progressive solution is one in which I can harmonize form and function within the design. A perfect solution that impresses with its simplicity. With this in mind, what makes the design of the fourth A8 generation stand out? Marc Lichte: It embodies our vision of luxury and prestige. The distinctive body line with the large, upright Singleframe grille, and the balanced emphasis of all four wheels projects the confidence of the luxury sedan outward. On the interior, we elevate the reduction of characteristic aesthetic design features. There will be hardly any buttons or switches here in the new A8. Instead, we have developed an operating concept in which the new touch display is completely integrated into the black panel surface of the interior. This frees up space and is actually revolutionary from the user’s perspective. How will the customer experience this free space? Marc Lichte: The new A8 appeals to all of the senses, starting with the shapes and lines of the interior design but also extending to the superbly handcrafted quality of the authentic materials. Added to this is an expansive audio experience as well as the subtle impression left behind by the aroma. All of these forms a harmonious composition in the new A8. Which detail excites you the most? Marc Lichte: The light animation of the A8 is truly unique. When the customer approaches the rear, for example, the light graphics develop across the entire width of the car. This is a first in the industry and an expression of the progressive self-perception. Or to put it another way, it’s a moment with which the new A8 will continually be attracting attention. sl

A WHALE OF A TIME The new Baja Luxploration program at The Resort at Pedregal Written by Bridget Williams A sudden sensation of aloneness crept over me as I snorkeled a good distance off shore in the bay near the town of La Paz, Mexico. My suspicions were confirmed when I briefly looked out to the horizon and spied my travel mates waving to me from the boat, which was slowly receding into the distance as I swam in the opposite direction. My heart pounded out a furious beat as I plunged my face back into the water and continued my pursuit; the sound of my labored breathing through the snorkel the only thing breaking the silence in the murky expanse. Within arm’s reach, a 40,000-pound behemoth, nearly the size of a school bus, swiftly and silently sliced through the hazy green water, unaffected by my menial presence. A combination of fear and fascination propelled me onward as I kicked my flippered feet with all my might to keep pace with the whale shark we’d traveled far over land and sea to find. After snapping some photos and a few minutes of video, I turned off the technology to fully experience the intensity of this once-in-a-lifetime interaction with a gentle giant. Abandoning my tandem swim when the shark took a dive into deeper waters where I dared not tread, I popped my head

40 slmag.net

out of the water again, happy to find that the guide boat had circled around to retrieve me. My first trip to the Baja Peninsula could have ended at that moment and I would have been completely satisfied, but the opportunity to swim alongside a whale shark was just one of several unique adventures I was privy to as part of The Resort at Pedregal’s Baja Luxploration program. As much as I’d like to keep this gem all to myself, word of the resort’s unique mastery of luxury and adventure has already gotten out: the AAA FiveDiamond, Forbes Five-Star resort in Cabo San Lucas was recently named Best Resort Hotel, Mexico in the 2017 Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards readers’ survey. Let’s start with the location: the 24-acre resort, just minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, is accessed via a long tunnel bored into Pedregal Mountain, which General Manager Fernando Flores describes as “a psychological experience that creates a feeling of exclusivity.” If the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel turns out to be the expansive ocean view that gradually comes into sight once you’ve reached this passageway’s terminus, I’m definitely OK with that.

Champagne and salt pairing at the Champagne Terrace

Cactus salad served for lunch at a local ranch

Octopus with smoked guajillo chili sauce and pork belly from Don Manuela restaurant

El Farallon restaurant

Opened in 2015, the architecture-forward resort, comprised of 113 rooms, suites, and stand-alone villas, is designed to hug the serpentine base of the mountain and boasts interesting angles that provide dramatic views of the rocky coastline, which regularly sends rollicking waves up and over massive boulders. Artisanal touches in the guest accommodations–original artwork, an embossed metal frame around the tufted headboard, embroidered accent pillows, hand-painted sink basins, huge hand-hewn doors with rustic hardware, and locally-made glazed ceramic tiles in the bathroom–lend a distinct sense of place. Several of the covetable items from the room are available for purchase in the resort’s thoughtfully curated boutique. My oceanfront room boasted a petite plunge pool cozied up to a covered terrace; it proved to be the ideal spot to enjoy the daily complimentary happy hour in-room service of fresh guacamole and ice-cold Coronas. Dining is a delight at The Resort at Pedregal, where each of its restaurants creatively capitalize on the celebrated culinary traditions of Mexico. Definitely high on my list of memorable

42 slmag.net

meals is the al fresco El Farallon, whose most prized tables are those in the “splash zone”, where mist from the crashing waves is said to bring good luck to those whose skin is kissed by the salty spray. The kitchen is literally built into the mountain, and a chalkboard hanging nearby lists the catch of the day. Sunrise paddleboarding is part of the Luxploration program.

Sunrise view of the reception area at the Resort at Pedregal

Music is an integral part of the ambiance at each of the resort's restaurants.

The famous "El Arco" natural rock arch is minutes from the resort.

Launched this past February, the resort’s Baja Luxploration program (the first of its kind in this region), offers a host of distinct experiences under the direction of experienced naturalists and adventurers who cater to discerning travelers looking for bucket-list-worthy excursions. I utilized the hour-long drive to the aforementioned whale shark expedition to appreciate the natural beauty of the Baja: the juxtaposition of the endless sea on one side with the expanse of desert on the other; the interplay of light and shadow on barren, jagged peaks; and, the colorful religious shrines that peppered the roadside. Arriving in La Paz, we boarded a small boat and set off to “hunt” for whale sharks, which are known to frequent the area between October and March. After an hour of perusing the bay, a dark shadow emerged near the surface of the water, and we rushed to grab our snorkeling gear. After the boat positioned us within several feet of the largest known fish species in existence, we eagerly slid into the water in groups of three along with our guide, who instructed us to stay a few feet away as we swam alongside. 44 slmag.net

It took several tries for everyone to experience a swim-along, as it is easy to become disoriented and set off in the opposite direction from the shark once you enter the water. One of the most unique aspects of the Luxploration program is the combination of adventure with high-end experiences. For example, following our swim with the whale shark, we were treated to a bounteous lunch on a deserted strand of sand where we feasted on octopus ceviche, crab salad and other delicacies. The amount of logistics required to pull off such an elegant set-up was certainly no easy feat, but the staff made it appear effortless. “As an independent resort, we are not afraid to try new things to create magical experience for our guests,” said Flores. Day two of “Luxploring” involved hiking Cañon del Zorro near the base of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, a lush oasis with an interesting array of flora and fauna and a dramatic 45-foot waterfall. En route we stopped in the tiny town of Santiago to pick up fresh cheese and avocados that would later find their way into our lunch. During our two-hour hike, we

scaled boulders and slid down a gentle waterfall into a crystalclear pool that provided welcome respite from the desert heat. An authentic, abuela-cooked lunch was enjoyed at a nearby rustic ranch far, far from the beaten path, and definitely the kind of place your average traveler would never discover on their own. The cheese we’d picked up earlier was used to make the most perfect quesadilla: served warm and drizzled with local honey. It was a simple and decadent pleasure I won’t soon forget. Returning back to the resort by late afternoon each day provided us with ample time to enjoy a host of on-site amenities: the adult-only pool with swim-up bar, a family-friendly infinity pool, and the meditation pool at Luna y Mar, a 12,000-squarefoot spa where signature treatments are based on the cycles of the moon. Particularly welcome after a day of hiking, my 60-minute massage began (as all spa treatments here do) with a welcome foot-cleansing ritual that utilizes special herbs selected for their purification attributes. The resort also stages a diverse lineup of activities each week, from cooking demos to surf fishing classes. If

there is anything you need, a team of genuinely service-oriented personal concierge are on call and wholly dedicated to ensuring that your expectations are exceeded. A late afternoon flight allowed us to squeeze in one additional excursion before heading home: paddle boarding at sunrise to Cabo’s iconic Land’s End, the final point on the Baja Peninsula where “El Arco,” a natural rock arch, frames the meeting place of the raucous Pacific Ocean and the placid Sea of Cortez. Within 15 minutes of leaving the hotel, we were gliding across the water and mingling with chatty sea lions who seemed intent on leading the way. After admiring the rock formations on our boards from a safe distance, we made a brief stop for a stroll along Lover’s Beach, a secluded and narrow sliver of beach that straddles the two bodies of water. By the time we returned to dry land, a breakfast spread was waiting for us on the beach. I wrapped up my trip sore (in a good way), satiated, and sun-kissed–an enviable vacation trifecta. sl Accommodations at The Resort at Pedregal from $580/night. Riesling

Written by Scott Harper, MS

Riesling is arguably the most misunderstood grape on the planet. The average wine drinker is under the general impression that Riesling is a sweet, inexpensive, low alcohol, German wine with an impossible to understand label. They believe that Riesling does not go well with food, and as such they are not interested in learning more about it because they do not like sweet wine (and sweet wine is for novices that aren’t really into wine). Riesling stereotypes exist because they are partially true. There is a ton of mediocre Riesling that is sweet, simple, and not really worthwhile. Ironically, Riesling is one of the fastest growing grapes in the United States. Wine consumers are starting to learn what wine experts have been saying for years: they love Riesling and consider it to be one of their favorite white wines because they are knowledgeable that the best examples can be dry, mediumdry or lusciously sweet dessert wines. Quality Riesling will also be moderately priced to expensive, have a wide range of alcohol levels, and can come from almost any wine producing country in the world. Riesling is also noteworthy for being one of the few high-quality grapes that excel in cool-to-cold climates such as Germany and Austria. Without the Riesling grape, fine wine in Germany would be sadly diminished. Riesling labels can be easy to understand or complex, but once the complex is defined, it can give you precise information

46 slmag.net

on where the wine is from and what style it is. Experts also know that Riesling is one of the most food friendly wines on earth. Its naturally high acidity allows it to pair well with spicy food, seafood and fried food, and it makes an excellent aperitif. When pairing a Riesling that is medium-dry with spicy food, the touch of sugar aids in quelling the heat, allowing you to enjoy more of both. It simply goes well with today’s modern cuisine. Riesling can be crisp with flavors of apricots, peaches, green apples, lemon zest and minerals, and it can show terror, or a sense of the place. A Riesling with a little bit of bottle age can also have the flavor and aroma of petrol; while this seems pejorative, it actually is not, as long as it is just a piece in the multiplicity of the flavor. To appreciate Riesling, it is a good idea to know what is dry and crisp really mean. Our taste buds are equipped to sense five things: Sweet, Sour, Bitter Salt and Umami. For the purposes of our discussion about Riesling, we will focus on sweet and sour. Sweet is the presence of sugar in wine. Dry is the absence of sugar in wine. Medium-dry falls somewhere between the two. You usually detect sweetness on the tip of your tongue. To better understand dryness in wine, try this simple demonstration: Place three glasses of water in front of you. Into the first glass of water, pour an entire packet of sugar–this equals sweet. Put a half packet of sugar into the second glass–

Vineyards in Esslingen, one of the oldest wine-growing towns in Württemberg, Germany.

this equals medium-dry. No sugar will be put into the third glass of water–this equals dry. Crisp refers to the acidity in wine, and while sour carries a negative connotation, it really refers to the zippy-crisp component in wine. It typically can be sensed on the sides of your tongue. Let’s take our three glasses of water again. Into the first glass of water squeeze an entire lemon - this would be very crisp or high acid. Into the second glass of water squeeze half of a lemon - this would be crisp or medium acid. Put only a few drops of lemon juice into the third glass of water - this would be low acid or not very crisp. A wine with acid will seem drier because acidity can “clean up” some of the sweetness in wine, making it finish very fresh, clean and most importantly balanced. Don’t be afraid of a wine with a little bit of sweetness especially if balanced with a good measure of acidity. There are a few wines that have a reputation of being dry but really have a touch of sweetness to them, one of them being chardonnay. Selbach Incline, Incline, Mosel, Germany 2015 The name incline refers to the severe slopping vineyards of Mosel. This Riesling has a touch of residual sugar which makes it perfect for spicy or fried foods. All the crisp acidity one expects from Riesling with the flavors of minerals, apricot, green apple

and citrus. A great value. Owned by the Selbach family of Selbach-Oster fame. Monchof Mosel, Germany 2015 This is a medium bodied medium dry Riesling. Again, it is perfect for the many Asian dishes with a fair amount of heat. Medium body with lemon, lime, green apple and a touch of white peach. The Monchof Estate which is owned by the Eymaels family is a former Cistercian Abbey which was purchased by the Eymaels in 1804 from Napoleon. Pfeffingen “Estate”, Phalz, Germany, 2014 This is a deliciously dry Riesling, crisp with the flavors of slate, citrus, green apple, peach and apricot. Medium framed and very long. What a perfect wine for seafood. It is like squeezing a fresh lemon on fried calamari. The label adorns a unicorn which is taken from the family crest bestowed in 1622 by Emperor Ferdinand II. Huber Traisental, Austria 2015 Yellow green color with the flavors of wet stone, white peach, nectarine, green apple, lemon zest and grapefruit. A linear, light, dry wine that is crisp and delicious with fried foods. 250-year-old family farm currently ran by Markus Huber. Austrian Riesling is usually easier to find dry and if you can’t find Huber delicious Riesling do try the very good Gruner Veltliner. sl A Certified Wine Educator, Harper is one of 149 professionals in North America and 236 worldwide who have earned the title Master Sommelier.

An occasional skiers guide to stay and play in Vail Written by Caylee Matthews With the interlaced fingers of my gloved hands securely wrapped around a steaming cup of hot chocolate, and my feet nice and toasty in a pair of chic Dubarry Kilternan boots, I admired the abstract artistry in the offing: colorful specs carved serpentine curves into a pristine blanket of white high atop the mountain. All morning, “fresh powder” was on nearly everyone’s lips as I strolled through the lobby of The Arrabelle and outside to where, just steps away, giddy skiers ascended in the Eagle Bahn gondola to grab rights to first tracks on their favorite runs. As much as I wanted to share in their exuberance, I am a late bloomer when it comes to skiing (and a stubborn learner at that), but as I’ve learned in Vail, finding alternative heart pounding on-mountain activities isn’t a challenge, and making après an extended affair is also a reputable pursuit in these idyllic environs. Enveloped by the White River National Forest, the Town of Vail is an outdoor enthusiasts’ dream in all seasons, but particularly in winter, when some 5,000-acres are transformed into a skiers’ playground. Devoid of the vibrant yellow leaves that are a hallmark of fall in the region, enigmatic “eyes” of leafless aspen trees become prominent and serve as silent observers of this seasonal spectacle; look closely and you may be able to spy a black bear’s “signature” on the bark. 54 slmag.net

Fiercely determined to prove that you can indeed teach an old dog new tricks, I always make a point to use my first day in Vail for a lesson with a private instructor from the Ski School (vail.com). As a newbie adult skier, I’ve found that the professionalism and calm demeanor inherent in their pool of instructors works wonders in building up my confidence. This past season I was joined by a friend who was a nervous first-time skier, and the two of us were paired up with Charlie Baker, one of the most experienced and sought-after instructors at the Ski School, who proved to be worth his weight in gold. He seized on my friend’s athleticism and fearlessness, allowing her to go from a Level 1 to a solid Level 4 after just one day, and helped me iron out some lingering flaws in my form. While I may not have been born to ski, I love working up a sweat in the out-of-doors, so to get my pulse racing on non-ski days, I turned to the Vail Nordic School for guided snowshoeing and cross-country ski tours (vailclubhouse.com/Nordic-center/). Each allowed me to experience a diversity of Rocky Mountain terrain and feel good about joining my skiing travel mates at day’s end to celebrate another day of adventure. Other exhilarating and family friendly ways to zip down the mountain that don’t involve skis include tubing, and the new Forest Flyer Mountain Coaster, whose track winds 3,400 feet down the mountain.

RockResorts Spa

Living room in a private residence at The Arrabelle

There is no shortage of lodging options for the discerning traveler in Vail, but the place I return to again and again is The Arrabelle at Vail Square (rooms from $335; arrabelle.rockresorts. com). Graced with a prime location in the heart of Lionshead, the luxury resort hotel, designed to mimic the timelessness of storied resorts that dot the European Alps, perfectly encapsulates a highend mountain town vacation. Ranging in size from 550 to more than 2,500 square-feet, the 81 guest rooms and condominiums are supremely comfortable and impeccably maintained. Add to this an outstanding list of creature comforts and attentive service, and you have the recipe for a perfect stay. From the balcony of our guest room, we enjoyed watching intrepid skaters as they made loops around one of Vail’s three ice rinks, and just down the hall, a complimentary indulgent afternoon hot chocolate bar appeared each afternoon to satiate our sweet tooth. For a fitness enthusiast like me, The Arrabelle’s fully equipped gym was a dream. To remedy the inevitable muscle

soreness resulting from so much physical activity, I made full use of the treatments and amenities available at the 10,000-squarefoot RockResorts Spa. Equally restorative was lounging in The Arrabelle’s rooftop pool and hot tub while gazing over the storybook setting of the village to the mountains beyond. Beginning with a hearty buffet breakfast through a day-ending nightcap, The Arrabelle’s Tavern on the Square restaurant is a constant hub of activity. The restaurant’s outdoor patio at the base of the mountain is ideal for savoring a bacon-infused vodka Bloody Mary, while inside fireside is an ideal place to indulge in chef Paul Wade’s recently revamped menu that puts his unique spin in familiar favorites like Lamb Shank Pot Pie and Bone-in Veal Schnitzel. On each of our ski days we took a break for a sit-down lunch at Bistro Fourteen, a popular spot located at the top of the Eagle Bahn gondola. The high-ceilinged dining room boasts ample windows to take advantage of the views from on high. Their hearty salads proved to be the perfect mid-day

pick-me-up and for those so inclined, there’s a host of heartier entrée options and a full bar. The altitude and uptick in activity mean that I’m always looking to the next meal, and in Vail there are several culinary institutions, but few have the staying power of Sweet Basil, which opened in 1977 and has remained a favorite of both locals and visitors (sweetbasilvail.com). Situated in the heart of Vail Village, their modern American cuisine is accompanied by a globally sourced wine list of more than 500 selections. Menu standouts that are as pretty on the plate as the palate include the charred octopus, the Alaskan Halibut, Barramundi A La Plancha, and the tastes-like-summer Strawberry Tart. Within the cozy and rustic surroundings of Sweet Basil’s sister restaurant, Mountain Standard, diners are treated to upscale gastro-pub fare cooked over a wood-fired grill (mtnstandard.com). Our favorites among the fire-kissed features included the calamari with pineapple curry, sweet and spicy peppers, Thai basil and

black lime peanuts as well as the Colorado lamb sirloin, served with sweet pepper piperade, charred eggplant, chickpea fritter and basil chimichurri. For me, half the fun of skiing is dressing the part, and shopping could be classified as a sport in Vail, where you can find everything from a kitschy $10 t-shirt in a souvenir shop to a limited edition $15,000 ski jacket at Gorsuch (gorsuch.com). While there are free shuttle options to get you from one side of town to the other, walking in the fresh mountain air on the paved trail that winds along the banks of Gore Creek through the center of town is a simple pleasure that only adds to my running list of Vail’s beguiling attributes. Cozied up to an outdoor fire pit at the base of Lionshead Mountain with my fingers gingerly wrapped around the stem of a champagne flute, I can’t help but think that the sprightly bubbles dancing about mirror my giddy emotions at the end of another action-packed day in Vail. sl

Curating a Lifestyle: In the Bag

Written by Amelia Jeffers

Spread, clockwise from top left: Two of the most iconic and collectible designer handbags: the Birkin and Kelly. Courtesy, private collector. This group of Louis Vuitton luggage was "wellloved," but still seems like a steal at $2,000. Sold, Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers. A mid-century clutch by Emilio Pucci. Courtesy, private collector. A vintage Valentino shoulder bag and scarf. Sold, Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers. A Judith Leiber brushed metal evening purse. Sold, Garth's Auctioneers & Appraisers.

More than just arm candy, a fashion statement, or a status symbol, a good handbag can be a serious investment. Take the Birkin bag by Hermès: the company maintains a waiting list in excess of six years of orders for the iconic bag, and examples nearly always bring more on the secondary market than retail direct from the French manufacturer. Recognized as the most collectible and best investment among designer handbags, Birkins grow in value based on two sound principles: scarcity and quality. Each Birkin is carefully constructed under the strictest controls, using the finest materials available. Only a handful are released each year, with custom-designed bags quickly becoming a coveted accessory when spotted on the red carpet. Drawing on what we know about how growth in value occurs, a Birkin passes the supply:demand ratio test with flying colors. In May, a new auction record was set when a 2015 gold and diamond-encrusted Birkin raced to $380,000 at Christie’s in Hong Kong.

58 slmag.net

But, there is life beyond Birkin for those of us in a more, ahem, modest price range. Great, timeless bags by Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior and others are readily available through a variety of resellers thanks to the “great American downsize”. As more and more baby boomers hit retirement age, estate sales, auctions and online consignment stores have seen a remarkable increase in the supply of luxury goods. Simultaneously, as savvy buyers have become conditioned to the concept of buying second-hand, demand has followed. Buying and selling designer handbags has become big business, with big returns; some analysts have reported that annual returns for handbag investments consistently outperformed the New York Stock Exchange. However, the difference in risk is notable: while you may be subject to Apple’s stock dropping due to the latest public relations issue, you don’t have to worry that someone has faked the stock. On the

contrary, the luxury handbag market is full of fakes - even “superfakes”, so named because they are incredibly difficult to discern. When entering the luxury handbag market, it is imperative that collectors buy from reputable dealers and educate themselves on authentic marks and construction. The most coveted names in vintage handbag collecting remain among the top designers today. Expect to pay a premium for these names, especially when buying from an expert, reputable dealer or auction company. Names like Judith Leiber, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Prada are coveted brands with a strong following, but they are faked less frequently than brands at the top-tier of the collecting world:Chanel, Hermès and Louis. As a result, they can sneak through a smaller-selling venue without attracting the same attention as their headline-making counterparts, making them a better alternative for buyers looking to get into the game. At

a national auction company, a bidder would expect to pay in the four-figure range for any of the top brands. Take another step back and include makers like Emilio Pucci, Dior, Tom Ford and Versace, and the secondary buying market offers tremendous opportunity to acquire a great deal, often below $1,000. Looking for a fun and risk-free way to kick off a collecting habit? Start with 20th century bags by relatively unknown makers for under $100. Up the style game and join the hunt in the hot collecting world of vintage handbags. Some of my favorite sites include (of course) smaller auction venues like Selkirk in St. Louis and Garth’s in Columbus, but also 1stdibs.com, therealreal.com, and scouring local estate and tag sales in tony neighborhoods. Happy hunting!. sl Amelia Jeffers is an nationally-known auctioneer and appraiser who has worked in the fine art, antiques and bespoke collectibles market for over 20 years.

OXENFORD A Hillsboro Road Oasis

What is it about the elegance of European-inspired estates that is so compelling? Is it based on past travel experiences or wistful dreams that capture the imagination? When the source of inspiration is located on 6.3 bucolic acres, just a mile or two south of bustling Green Hills on Hillsboro Road, it creates a seductive sweet spot of privacy and convenience. Welcome to Oxenford, once the name of a family farm in the English countryside and now the family home of Nashvillians, Sandra and Larry Lipman. In 1985, the Lipmans, as a young twenty-something couple, were already parents to a two year-old daughter, Sutton, and had another---Alexa---on the way. They knew it was time to start looking for an “adult” home suitable for their growing family. After searching for almost a year, they finally decided to bid on a beautiful expanse of property being held in a blind trust. Their bid was successful and before they knew it, they were sketching floor plans on a napkin during dinner at Sperry’s. They moved in 24 months later and have been there ever since. “We quickly realized that if we wanted our home to be exactly what we wanted, that we would have to build it,” said Sandra. “We were lucky to hire the late, great Dan Burton as our interior designer. With Dan helping us execute our vision, 70 slmag.net

we’ve never had to change a thing. His signature, black-lacquered baseboards are just as current today as they were then. There were few 10, 11 or 20-foot ceilings back then, seven-foot solid wooden doors, or heavy crown molding. We had everything custom-made. We didn’t want the house to feel new, so we let my European heritage serve as our inspiration. We enhanced the home’s Old World-inspired style by using true stucco.” A commanding, pedigreed gate guards the winding drive that leads to the manor with its 12-foot high glass and blacklacquered double doorway. The home is substantial removed from one of Nashville’s most accessible thoroughfares, which in turn, provides a tranquility usually found in more rural settings. Once inside the foyer, the partially free-standing, curved staircase draws visitors’ focus to the entry’s crown molding and its stunning chandelier, creating a dramatic first impression. To the right is the spacious, formal living room with its refined fireplace mantle, bay window and herringbone hardwood floor with border. The banquet-sized dining room, where the couple has hosted many splendid dinner parties for friends, family and non-profit causes, is to the left. Soft neutrals serve as the anchor in this part of the home.

The gourmet, designer kitchen, which opens onto the breakfast room, offers a glimpse into the vivid, animated personalities of the owners. Lacquered dark walls, which are setoff by the gray diagonal grain of the kitchen’s hardwood floors, highlight the pair’s sophisticated sensibility. The custom-glazed cabinets and Italian marble countertops and backsplash reinforce the gracious style found throughout the home. The vast family room with its 11-foot ceilings, walls of custom glass, French doors, and stunning, angled fireplace with brick detail creates an openness perfect for entertaining large groups of friends or children and grandchildren. “All the downstairs rooms open into other rooms; there are no dead ends,” states Larry. “We did this intentionally for entertaining. For example, the family room can be accessed from the foyer, the living room, the breakfast room, the Florida room and the screened-in porch.” The abundance of natural light reflects beautifully on the wood paneling and the built-in bookcases. It has an intimate feel for such a large room as this home has the feeling of openness while still maintaining warmth and coziness. Upstairs is home to the master suite, an oasis for the homeowners with a comfortable sitting area complete with

76 slmag.net

fireplace, bookcases, and morning bar with refrigerator. A pair of French doors open to a private balcony, as well as the prodigious bedroom with its Venetian plaster walls and large bay window. The sweeping master bath is a showstopper with its sparkling, white cabinetry, glass shower, Jacuzzi tub crowned by a separate chandelier, two walk-in closets and the requisite black-lacquered wooden floors. Additionally, there are four other bedrooms located on this floor as well as a bonus room over the three-car garage. The rear of the house opens to a charming screened-in porch and sizeable patio accented by stone pavers and a view of the lushly landscaped lawn. “There is nothing on the market, in close proximity, with over six usable acres. There’s also plenty of room here to add a pool and a pool house,” Larry pointed out. “The view is expansive and totally private. We have so many happy memories here.” Kudos to the owners for creating such a stylish, yet comfortable home with its serene and inviting old world charm. “Even after 32 years, I still automatically unwind every time I drive up the driveway,” he noted. And, that dear readers, is what the grandest dreams are made. sl The empty nesters have decided to down-size. Oxenford is currently on the market. See page 15 for details.

DETAIL ORIENTED Iconic Kayne Prime Lives Larger

Written by Gloria Houghland / Photographed by Michael Scott Evans The Nashville restaurant scene is scorching hot these days. With an average 100 new residents flocking to Music City every day, savvy restaurateurs from around the world seem to be falling all over each other to establish a presence here too. There are so many new eateries popping up that most of us won’t even have the time to frequent them. Readers might wonder how this abundant competition impacts those businesses that were here before Nashville was so “cool.” According to Chris Hyndman, founder and CEO of M Street Entertainment, not at all. “Everyone wants to come here. We welcome everyone,” Chris explained on a recent afternoon at Kayne Prime, the company’s flagship steakhouse, and just one of six restaurants under the M Street umbrella. “We are focused on who we are; independent, original, Nashville restaurants, and what we do. I grew up in Nashville, so we have a unique and vested relationship with this community that others don’t have. It’s different for us.” In fact, Kayne Prime has just completed a stunning expansion to accommodate the ever-growing number of Music City diners. Nashville’s Music City Center has brought new corporations interested in hosting elite events where there was a void in that market. The largest room at Kayne Prime previously held just 22 guests and they found themselves constantly turning away requests for larger parties. The restaurant’s space has now expanded by almost 200 additional seats with unique areas for parties from 14 to 60 patrons, while still maintaining the dining experience which made the steakhouse a market standout. In fact, the two full kitchen lines enable the eatery to serve the larger capacity with ease.

Former Kayne Prime Executive Chef, Robert Grace, now serves as the Culinary Director of Operations for all of the M Street restaurants, so Chef de Cuisine-turned-Executive Chef, Steven Chandler has assumed the leadership role. “I’ve never worked in a restaurant like this,” noted Chandler. “It’s consistently full every night of the week with 90 percent of the folks at the bar also enjoying dinner. Our expansion was thoughtful and smart without being overly dramatic. Our guests keep coming back because they know what they are going to get. We pride ourselves on that consistency.”

Along with the larger rooms, a new SOMM Room has been added for wine-centric private parties. The barrel ceiling, reclaimed wood walls, plush seating, long communal table and over-size glass wall wine cellar evokes the great wineries of Napa Valley and beyond. Reserved expressly for private parties up to 14, the guests are served only by Level 1 and 2 sommeliers. Frequent visits from global winemakers are also in the works. The bar space at Kayne Prime, which usually runs three to four people deep, has been doubled, providing more of the coveted seating, allowing more guests to interact with the talented KP mixologists. In addition to the existing, bustling nightspot at the front of the house, there is now a tavern at the rear of the restaurant with 30-plus seats and several luxurious leather booths. A smaller, more intimate salon, featuring an abundance of inviting, soft seating is located outside of the largest new dining space, which comfortably holds up to 60 and has its own dedicated cocktail lounge. Each area provides a unique hideaway for different experiences all while maintaining the hip Kayne Prime vibe – a nod to its train yard location. The restaurant’s walls of wooden railway ties, textural, concrete tile floors and industrial pendants fuse together to provide an uber-exclusive, high-end ambience. Along with a dedicated kitchen staff, Chef Steven, General Manager Charlene Eddy and Director of Operations, Gregg McDermott make sure that things flow smoothly. Their focus with the new expansion is to elevate an already exceptional dining experience. “Our goal,” said the Chef, “is to not just be the best steakhouse in town, but to be the best restaurant. We want to stay hip, fresh, and relevant while grounded in the Kayne Prime roots. We know who we are and where we can push ourselves. We focus on the details.” sl Kayne Prime is located at 1103 McGavock Street in the Gulch and is open Sunday – Thursday 5:00 p.m.– 10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Contact Specialty Events Manager Jaclyn Henning at 615-259-0050 for large party reservations.

ICONIC NASHVILLE ESTATE Amongst Nashville’s finest, nestled in the prestigious, yet timeless Oak Hill area, 4121 Franklin Pike occupies an astounding eight wooded acres on some of the city’s most sought after real estate. Standing at nearly 10,000 covered square feet of living space, and being perfectly suited for both humble family living and grand entertaining alike, this magnificent estate is truly one of Nashville’s crown jewels. Appropriately named “First Lady Acres,” this opulent abode has certainly earned a place in music city’s history. In 1974, country legend George Jones first purchased the home for his wife Tammy Wynette. Since then, this property has only continued to serve as a historically relevant, yet modernly extravagant structure. In Nashville’s world of equestrian estates, federal colonials and tudor revival architecture, this spectacularly mid-century estate was always destined to stand out. During their time in residence, the home’s superstar power couple celebrated immense success, and they simply could not have picked a more fitting space to host it. While it’s true that these country legends may have been the estate’s first celebrities, they were, by no means, the only ones to call “Lady Acres” home. As a matter of fact, the string of success of which came through that house have many wondering if it itself isn’t the key to success. Throughout the years, this grand property has been owned by famous record label impresario Gayron “Moe” Lytle, four-time Grammy winner Earl Scruggs and, as of 2015, Scott Underwood, founding drummer for Train. Scott, alongside his wife, LA designer Cheryl Underwood began an unprecedented journey by revamping First Lady Acres. The two shared a vision of reconstructing the space into a clean and modern living space, while still maintaining the irreplaceable architectural integrity of the estate’s history. After months of renovations during which they creating an ode to California contemporary design, they have since created a one-of-a-kind opulent and fresh indoor and outdoor space that perfectly harmonizes with the homage of history that rests in the roots of the home. Compliments of the string of tenants consisting of music city’s finest and the estate’s timeless location and reputation, this decadent, yet historic living space remains one of Nashville’s most sought after homes. After all, its history speaks for itself. The estate is currently on the market at $4.2 million by Paula Hinegardner and Krista Jameson of The Paula Hinegardner Group and Keller Williams Luxury Homes International. SERIOUSLY SEERSUCKER

In the hot humid New Orleans summers of 1909, Joseph Haspel, Sr. produced men’s suits out of seersucker fabric, becoming regionally popular as a more comfortable and practical option in the warm summer months. Ivy leaguers or preppy, nothing says summer fun like a mint julep and a crisp, seersucker suit. This was definitely the southern spirit at Robert Hick’s third annual Seriously Seersucker event benefiting the O’More College of Design in Franklin. Featured guests included Laurie Haspel, granddaughter of the Haspel founder and Will Swillie, Executive Vice President of Hasple. Giving the last words as always, Robert Hicks ended the day with, “Like New Orleans, where seersucker suits, cocktails, and seersucker parties were all first invented, It’s the occasion to have fun, swank around in your seersucker and enjoy the food, music, cocktails and life.”

HONORING JANE ANDERSON DUDLEY Being a life long Nashvillian, I have had the pleasure of knowing Jane Anderson Dudley my entire life. I have always appreciated Mrs. Dudley with the highest regards and often thought that she reminds me of a rare and magnificent piece of porcelain on a pedestal; graceful, sophisticated, charming and alluring. The pedestal is now the grand staircase of the Cheekwood Mansion, as the Cheekwood Board of Trust Members and many past Swan Ball Chairs filled the Cheekwood Loggia for the dedication of the Jane Anderson Dudley Grand Staircase at Cheekwood. Jane Dudley’s stories are fascinating and how she created Nashville’s first and finest white tie gala, The Swan Ball some 58 years ago. Today, Jane Dudley serves as Honorary Chairmen of each and every annual Swan Ball. Cheekwood is known as Nashville’s treasure, but Jane Dudley will always be known as the jewel in Nashville’s treasured crown.

THE SOPHISTICATE www.anthonymichaelinteriordesign.com

The majority of people that I know are very much devoted to their daily routines. However my loyalty lies with living well, and that often means changing it up. I believe it is important to be flexible in your day while staying true to what makes you happy. During my previous work as a crisis and communications coach in New York City, and now as I am selling real estate in Nashville, I have the privilege to interact with many different kinds of people and observe various lifestyles and habits. I must admit, I have adopted several essential ones along the way. 6:50 A.M. Often it is popping in a Nespresso pod at home to get me started other days it looks like High Garden Tea from East Nashville (they have blends for every need). Several times a week I like to boil ginger and turmeric root with WeeBee raw organic honey and lemon to help alkaline my body. Either way, I need my morning fix. 7:30 A.M. I jump into my daily lesson, often an audiobook program. Currently I am listening to The New Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, a book about re-creating your self-image and how your patterns of thinking impact everything you do. 8:00 A.M. Shortly after I wake up, I’m guilty of already starting to look through e-mails and texts. So, by now the phone

98 slmag.net

starts ringing and with headset on, I start to move the day forward. I get builder and client calls and many things are impromptu… so I just go with it. 11:15 A.M. This past weekend I was in Southampton visiting a friend and I always make sure to bring something to say thank you for the hospitality. I love going to Epergne, the home and gift store in Belle Meade. The best gifts are personalized and thoughtful such as a Pidgeon and Poodle picture frame including a printed memorable photo or horn coasters by MooMoo Designs imported from South Africa. 12:00P.M. I live an integrated life—meaning one single action, task or conversation can serve many different purposes. I am not a fan of the word multi-task, however I will say, I prefer to always be in motion and to get as much out of my time or effort as I possibly can. I’m now on the way to a construction site walk-through with my builder - client and project manager for 12 homes that my business partner and I are developing in Green Hills. But first, I have to stop by the Juice Bar in Belle Meade. They always have the healthy must haves things on the go, like veggie wraps, sandwiches and of course made to order fresh juices. I arrange for the staging company The Conley House and our lighting expert from Grahams Lighting in

Franklin to walk the site with us. I like to work with the best, my expectations are high and they always take care of us.

7:00 P.M. Anyone who knows me understands my appreciation for great restaurants. I have been to some of the very best and my favorites are not always the trendiest or most expensive—personally I value consistency in quality and service, attention to fine detail and the atmosphere must feel right. There are a handful of places I like to visit on the regular in Nashville. Bricktops is my “go-to” for several reasons, but mainly because I ultimately feel most comfortable there. They have a great menu and the service and atmosphere always allow for a great time whether by myself, with a client or a group of friends. I’m known to enjoy a cocktail or two... To quote Oscar Wilde, “Everything in moderation, including moderation.”

2:30 P.M. I constantly have to think of new ways to sell and collaborate with other professionals. In this case, a conference call with Chicagobased interior designer Anthony Michael and his team to discuss them doing layout renderings for a large modern new construction home we will be putting on the market in a couple months when it’s completed. 4:00 P.M. A previous buyer-client texts me to inquire about the short-term rental market and is contemplating selling his home in Pittsburgh to buy something here in Nashville to rent. We make plans for the following day to meet at the Thompson Hotel’s Marsh House for happy hour to discuss ideas and potential hot areas like Gulch South, Germantown or East Nashville. I enjoy blending my social lifestyle with my work commitments for a better opportunity to connect with my clients. 5:00 P.M. I recently made a commitment to engage in more exciting types of physical endurance and as a result I have an appointment with Alexander “Pepper” Kaufman, owner and trainer of Pepper Boxing in Green Hills for a lesson. I can burn 800 calories in 50 minutes and I see results very fast. I’ve never loved something so much while hating it at the same time.

As the day winds down, I know I’ve done all I can to do well. Sometimes we just have to go with the flow, and other times it means to stick to what we know. Either way, the goal is to connect with what we do and who we’re with—and somewhere in there, that’s the recipe for a life well lived. sl Gabe Nies is an agent with Parks Real Estate, tastemaker and the newest member of our team as the chief lifestyle contributor to Sophisticated Living Magazine

On a warm and bright August morning, 250 patrons and community supporters gathered for the construction kick-off and building dedication of the new Honey Alexander Center for Family & Children Services, an organization focused on the welfare of local families. For decades, Honey Alexander has been a leading advocate for children and families in the Nashville community. It was only fitting that the new headquarters of Family & Children’s Service be in honor of Honey Alexander. L’ETÉ DU VIN WINE AUCTION

In the summer of 1980, a group of leading Nashville men and wine connoisseurs set out to create a new, entertaining way to raise charitable funds towards the fight against cancer. This backyard wine auction was the first official L’Eté Du Vin event. Driven to create a relaxing yet elegant summer soirée, the requirements were simple: great food, spectacular wines and the air filled with laughter shared among friends. That year, $3,000 was raised but the bar has always remained high as over the past 37 years a whooping $21 million has resulted from the proceeds of L’Eté Du Vin. What has now become a weeklong event, this year’s honored California wines included Schramsberg Vineyards, Davies Vineyard, Hirsch Vineyard, PlumpJack Estate Winery, CADE Estate Winery and Odette Estate Winery. The evening began with a silent auction and wine reception, followed by a seated gourmet dinner, with a most active wine auction taking place while guests were dining. This year’s event, held in the ballroom of the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel, was a tribute to the late Spencer Hays, a Nashville Wine Auction ‘founding father.’ A most memorable moment was shared when the guests raised their glasses, pledging to continue to fund the fight against cancer in his honor.

WHAT’S IN YOUR BARN . . .

BARN FINDS Written by Gary A. Webb and Sarah Sperling

In past articles we have talked about trends at auctions ranging from art and antiques to racing memorabilia. Another interesting trend is the classic car market. So buckle-up, and let’s take a look at who’s shaking things up! Traditionally, classic-car auctions are pretty straightforward. All classic cars fall into one of three categories: original, restored or resto-mod. A true original classic car is one that has been maintained aesthetically and mechanically without the replacement of any parts, while the restored cars have been refurbished to their factory specifications using original factory parts. The resto-mod have been restored, but modified with modern parts and technology. Of course, the original cars are the most rare and therefore the most expensive. The sound of these motorcars can be heard making their way towards the auction block around the globe. Among the most noted, RM Sotheby’s holds their annual classiccar auction in Monterey, California in August coinciding with the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show. In October, they hold their other renowned US auction at the Hershey’s Chocolate World in Pennsylvania. You can count on some remarkable cars achieving astronomical prices! Over the years restoration has become a controversial issue, and the lines between “original” and “restored” have become blurred. Indeed, most vehicles being sold today as “original” should be more appropriately labeled as “restored.” Concerned that many of these classics were being “over-restored,” collectors began to rethink their definition of “original.” To car aficionados, who consider classic cars historical artifacts, not mere cars, the term came to mean all vehicles that are rare and valuable, regardless of condition. As a result, over the past few years, rare gems are being rediscovered and hauled out of old barns, sheds, or other outbuildings where they have not seen the light of day in decades,

then sold at auction in their as-found rusty, musty, and dusty condition. Hence the term “barn finds.” Despite their poor condition, these “barn finds” are fetching top dollar at auction, often outselling similar makes and models that have been fully restored. Recently, a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS Spider was auctioned at the Gooding sale in Scottsdale. The car had been totaled by an engine fire and had sat in a Pennsylvania garage for 44 years. Despite its condition, it sold for $2.1 million surpassing the 2013 auction price for a fully restored comparable model. In 2014, a totally rusted out, Ferrari Dino 246 GT, which suffered decades of neglect in a soggy garage with a leaky roof, sold for an astonishing £132,250 ($222,000) at the Silverstone Auction in England. In November 2016, a 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster was sold at auction by Auctions America in Hilton Head, SC. Though in fairly good condition, considering it had been sitting in storage in a suburb of Chicago since 1975, it was estimated somewhere between $200,000 and $250,000. It sold for $605,000, becoming yet another example of a “barn find” bringing a much higher price than a perfectly restored similar vehicle. Thus continues the power of the “barn find” craze, which has become something of a romantic and heroic ideal at auctions, and has inspired episodes on the TV series American Pickers. However, not all are happy with this trend. The traditional classic-car market’s struggle with the concept of unrestored cars is expressed by Rob Sass in the automotive publication, Autoweek, “… to value a car like this in excess of a well-restored example—especially with the knowledge that many barn finds will never be restored, lest they lose their “authenticity”—seems to make little sense.” He has a point. But, it will remain to be seen if and how long this new trend will last. In the meanwhile, you may want to check out what’s in your daddy’s old barn. sl

Saving for Retirement: Covering Gaps in Your Planning

Whether you stay in the workforce or take a hiatus to care for family members, retirement funding should not be ignored. Taking a hiatus from the workforce — to raise children, to care for an elderly parent, or for any other personal reason — doesn’t mean you have to take a break from retirement planning. Even though retirement funds aren’t automatically deducted from a regular paycheck, you don’t have to experience a gap in retirement funding. Continue to contribute even during your hiatus.

Taking a hiatus from the workforce — to raise children, to care for an elderly parent, or for any other personal reason — doesn’t mean you have to take a break from retirement planning.

Opting to raise a family does not preclude you from saving for retirement. If you are outside of the full-time workforce for 10 years, which can be a big gap in funding your golden years, it’s important to keep squirreling money away so that it can grow over time. Even if you stop working for a brief period, it can be challenging to make up for the lost retirement dollars. Whether you stay in the workforce for the long haul or take a short- or long-term hiatus from a full-time career, keep these points in mind: Pay yourself first. From the time you start working, set aside up to 10 percent of your salary for retirement savings. Remember to pay yourself first before paying anyone else. A financial advisor can help ensure a diverse mixture of stocks and bonds that will match your comfort level with your life goals.

Carefully consider a professional hiatus. Think about if and when you plan to take a hiatus from full-time employment. The older you are, the longer it may take for your investments to show greater gains through reinvesting and existing capital. Continue to contribute. If you opt to leave the full-time workforce, continue contributing to retirement plans, including individual retirement accounts. In 2016, you can contribute $5,500 to your IRAs; $6,500 if you’re aged 50 or over. Stay up-to-date. If you take a hiatus, at some point you will need to prepare for rejoining the workforce. Make networking a priority, so that when you look for a job you have people to seek out for assistance. Will you return to your original career or head in a new direction? Whatever the case, stay technology savvy, and focus on jobs you want to pursue as you restart your career. Stay focused. Stay the course when investing. Work hard to keep emotions out of your portfolio decisions. Working with a financial advisor can help allay fears in down markets and ensure that your portfolio is properly diversified and balanced. Meet with your financial advisor regularly. Meet with your financial advisor on a quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis to help you determine what kind of gap you may be experiencing in saving for retirement and what steps you can take to narrow it. Prioritizing your own needs in retirement over the needs of others isn’t always easy. But it’s necessary. Women are busy, both at work and at home. They are juggling a lot of responsibilities, but think about your retirement savings because you may be more concerned about others than yourself.

WHITLAND FOURTH OF JULY

Four decades ago, a group of neighbors in a quiet suburban neighborhood decided to celebrate our Nation’s Birthday and founding leaders on Whitland Avenue. Little did they know, they created a traditional celebration that would follow over the next 40 years. As all great events, this one has grown over the years to an entire avenue parade. The parade lead by Grand Marshall Denise Hawkins included hundreds of kids sporting red, white and blue decorated bicycles, wagons, strollers and patriotic parents in attendance. Patriotic tunes by the members of the Nashville Symphony played prior and after the reading of The Declaration Of Independence. Nan Gourlay, as she has for decades, lead the festive parade goers in “God Bless America” and other patriotic hymns. The 4th Of July is a day of pride, family, food and the American Celebration, Whitland Avenue Style!

THE PERFECT TIMING Written by Dr. Brian Biesman

In a perfectly timed complement to Sophisticated Living’s first annual wedding edition, Dr. Biesman offers his expert advice regarding pre-wedding procedures‌ Several times per day, I am presented with the scenario that someone wants to freshen up his or her appearance for an upcoming wedding. These requests involve everyone from the bride and groom, to family members, friends, and even distant relatives. Everyone who presents this question has the same goal: they want to look their best on the special day. Just like with all wedding details, making a timeline for rejuvenation procedures will help you achieve your aesthetic goals well before the big day. Let’s take you through some of the frequently presented scenarios and the type of advice I typically offer for each. In general, I approach weddings a bit differently than I do most other events. Weddings can require a tremendous amount of planning and preparation, and are also emotionally charged events. For that reason, I like to do an evaluation and start planning any facial procedures as far in advance as possible. This gives us the opportunity to discuss goals, treatment options, and make a plan and a timeline in a relaxed manner where nothing is left to chance. In an optimal scenario, I like to meet with anyone who wishes to improve his or her appearance to get ready for a wedding 6-12 months in advance so that we can develop an organized plan. Surgery. Despite all the advances in nonsurgical rejuvenation techniques, surgery is sometimes the best option to lift sagging eyebrows or eyelids, recontour the jawline, or remove excess tissue that has developed over time. If the relative risks of surgery outweighed the potential benefits, surgeons would not recommend these procedures. However, as is true of any procedure (and most things in life!), surgery does not always go exactly as planned. In a bestcase scenario, I recommend allowing at least 6 months of recovery time from facial surgery prior to an event. Noninvasive skin tightening (Thermage, Ultherapy). Noninvasive skin tightening treatments help provide contouring and lifting of the eyebrows, cheeks, jowls, and neck without surgery. These procedures are performed in the office without the need for anesthesia or recovery. Ultherapy provides more lifting while Thermage produces contouring. Bruising can sometimes occur after Ultherapy treatment. While both treatments are safe and effective, the results are more subtle than those generated by surgery. While immediate changes are noted after a properly performed skin tightening treatment, best results are seen approximately 3-6 months later, so it is important to plan accordingly.

Injectable Soft Tissue Fillers. Soft tissue fillers may be used to enhance naturally occurring structures in young people such as making lips fuller or filling in hollows under the eyes. Fillers can also restore a youthful look to those who have started to notice volume-related signs of aging in the eyebrows, cheeks, under eye area, lips, around the mouth, and jaw line. When fillers are injected well, it should not be obvious even to a keen eye that treatment was administered. Swelling and bruising can occur with filler injection, so for those who have never been treated previously, I strongly recommend doing the first session 3-4 months prior to the wedding. This allows for more than enough time to let things settle, add more if necessary, and make any subtle tweaks and adjustments well in advance. It also allows time for one to adjust to their new look. Fillers are often performed during the same visit as Botox injections, noninvasive skin tightening, and some laser treatments. I usually like to do a final filler evaluation about 6 weeks prior to the wedding. If you are considering filler treatment, make sure your provider is extremely experienced and also offers laser treatment to help any bruising that may develop resolve more quickly. Fillers are a key tool in helping men and women of almost any age look more youthful in a natural way. Best candidates: anyone who has noticed that their face looks older or more “tired as may be evidenced by hollows under the eyes, loss of fullness to the cheeks, lips, area around the mouth, chin, or other areas. Brides often like to have injections in their lips or under their eyes. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin. These products are pharmaceutical grade medications that are injected into muscles to help them relax. These drugs accomplish 1 of 2 goals: make lines caused by muscle contraction appear less deep and shape the face (lift the eyebrows, corners of the mouth, make the face appear more slim). The onset of effect of these products is typically 3-5 days with maximum effect evident at 2 weeks. For those new to these products, I recommend undergoing the first treatment 4-5 months in advance. As the duration of effect of these products is typically 3-4 months, the second treatment should be administered 1 month or so prior to the event. Timing treatments in this manner allows any adjustments to be made in advance of the wedding. When Botox and related drugs are used well, the effect is natural and relaxed. Best candidates: anyone with unwanted wrinkles or lines in their upper face or who feels they look sad or tired. Men and women of all ages can benefit from these products.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Laser Skin Resurfacing. Treatment of skin wrinkling or discoloration is accomplished with the use of lasers or IPL. If you have a ruddy complexion, this can be lightened through a series of laser or IPL treatments. Three to six treatments may be required, spaced approximately 3-4 weeks apart, so you will want to start treatments several months before the wedding. It is important that your skin not be tanned at the time of treatment as treating tanned skin with lasers increases the risk of complications. If your goal is to clear both brown and red skin discoloration of the face, neck, chest, arms, back and even legs, IPL treatment is the best option. Again, several treatments will be required so allow sufficient time for several treatments. Downtime after IPL is minimal, but this is not a treatment to have performed within a few days of important photos or events.

Medical Grade Skin Care: A medical grade skin care regimen is the foundation to any aesthetic treatment plan. If you are not already following a plan prescribed by an expert skin care specialist, consider doing so as soon as possible. Chemical peels can also be used to augment the results of skin care, laser, and other treatments. It is important to have an established skin care regimen that is customized to your skin well in advance of the big event to ensure that you do not encounter allergic reactions or other unexpected surprises. Best Candidates: Everyone should be using a medical grade skin care regimen (including the right sunscreen) whether or not they are preparing for a special occasion. Last Minute Skin-Rescue: So it is less than a week until the big day and you want your skin to look its absolute best for the wedding- what can you do to get a risk-free, instant (OK, it takes an hour) rejuvenation that will leave your skin glowing? The CO2 lift is a facial mask that may be applied in our office or, if you are careful, at home. The treatment takes an hour or so to complete and the results last 5-7 days. There are no known risks to CO2 lift treatment and there is nothing else like it available. The CO2 lift treatment is available only at limited locations, but is a great last-minute treatment to safely and effectively get a “glow”. Sometimes entire bridal parties will treat themselves! Best candidates: Anyone who wants their skin to look its best for a big event will benefit from the CO2 lift facial mask. CoolSculpting: As part of wedding preparation we are often asked about CoolSculpting for treatment of unwanted fat on the belly, thighs, flanks (love-handles), back, arms and other areas. CoolSculpting is a safe and effective way to eliminate unwanted body fat and help dresses and tuxedos fit more comfortably. With each treatment, approximately 20% of the fat layer thickness is reduced. It takes up to 3 months to see best results, so this is another treatment to plan for well in advance of a wedding (4-6 months in case a second treatment is required). CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss technique and is not intended for the treatment of obesity. Ideal candidates are within 20-30 pounds of their ideal body weight and have stubborn bulges that just don’t respond to diet and exercise. CoolSculpting is performed in the office without sedation or anesthesia. There is no downtime or recovery after treatment, although some patients experience cramping discomfort for a few days. Additional fat reduction can be achieved with each treatment session. Like any other medical procedure, achieving best results (and avoiding complications) with CoolSculpting requires a great deal of knowledge and experience. If you choose to pursue this remarkable treatment, do your homework and make certain you find a practitioner with many years of CoolSculpting experience. Best candidates: men or women who are within 20-30 pounds of their ideal body weight and have unwanted body fat in the belly, love handles, inner or outer thighs, back, arms, and other areas. As you can see, planning a timeline well in advance of the big day can help you achieve your goals to look and feel your best! sl

AN ART DECO AFFAIR

The 1930’s Golden Age of Glamour set the tone for this enchanting evening held at The Frist Center. Old Hollywood was the suggested attire with many lovely starlets dressed for the Oscars. The women looked lovely in their Deco inspired attire. Co-Chairs Carolyn Griffin and Jessica Kinnard produced a stunning star filled production. The signature cocktail was the “NewFashioned,” Jim Beam Bourbon, Amaretto, simple syrup, bitters with an orange twist. Light bites were provided by Ale and Masala House, Ta’nsuo and The Mockingbird with marvelous deco menus for the food stations spread through out the building. A wonderful Deco evening benefiting a great historic building. 3
