Creative duet Nadezhda and George Ananyev founded N&GAnaniev Interiors in Russia in 2002, and their individuallytailored approach quickly garnered an enviable Europeanclientele. Their first project in the United States was ten years inthe making; they met the homeowners a decade ago and wereretained to reinvent a historic home they originally purchased inthe late 1980s.

The homeowners’ stated vision encompassed a plethora of bright and unusual colors, with the resulting project reflecting a vintage vibe bolstered by contemporary furniture. According to the designers, everything was built with the idea of “visual impression and magnificent appeal for the eyes.” This was accomplished with the application of expressive walls with lively wallcoverings, remarkable furnishings and outstanding and occasionally provocative pieces of art.

While renovations were extensive, the designers kept the home’s existing footprint. Walls remained in the same place; the “stuffing” was completely removed, which left only the doors, as the Ananyev’s found them exceptionally beautiful and in conformity with the project’s overall concept.

The first floor is comprised of a suite of rooms with a circular flow around a central hall. One of the first spaces that guests encounter is the “art room”. The same teal color found in the hall was applied in this space, whose assemblage of artworks in various mediums boasts a gallery-like appeal. In the music room, a pair of Maya armchairs from Brabbu with mustard-yellow velvet upholstery make a visual and tactical statement and help to tie in colors found in the graphic rug. Wallpaper from Casamance serves as a fitting backdrop for an equally colorful scenic painting by Ilya Kabakov in the living room.
