SOPHISTICATED SOCIETY: Charity Updates

Presented by The BMW Store

While the fall season is normally bustling with non-profit events, we are delighted to do our part in raising awareness on what is upcoming and how our readers can support during these uncertain times. We reached out to all of our non-profit partners from this year’s Western & Southern Financial Group Sophisticated Giving Charity Registry and asked what they have upcoming. You will see within the next few pages that they are still being active, and trying to raise awareness with re-modified events. We know the Sophisticated Living reader continues to support the non-profit community, and we will continue to update you on future events and the continued good that our community is able to do. As always, the Western & Southern Financial Group Sophisticated Giving Charity Registry is available online for your charitable use. We hope you find some inspiration with these upcoming events and continue to support your non-profit community during these strange times.

CABVI is Building Brighter Futures for People with Vision Loss

With help from the Cincinnati Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired (CABVI), Sophia Averion doesn’t let her vision loss from Stargardt Disease stop her from doing all the things that most 17 year-olds do, including baking, swimming and riding her bike. She uses adaptive aids in the kitchen, sometimes taking a photo of the cake mix box and enlarging it on her iPad to make it easier to read the recipe. As her mom, Lisa says, “Sophia is determined to work towards her goals so anything is possible. She is deliberate, thoughtful and organized, willing to try anything.”

Sophia has been working closely with CABVI’s Youth Services Vision Specialist, including meeting online during the COVID-19 pandemic, to learn self-advocacy skills to request help when needed. This helped her to create a vision portfolio that she can share with her teachers whenever she starts a new class so that they understand the accommodations she needs. As she enters her senior year in high school, Sophia is excited about perhaps studying nursing when she goes to college. As she says,” I have big aspirations and do not intend to let my visual impairment hold me back.”

The challenges for people with severe vision loss don’t stop because of a pandemic. CABVI wants you to know that we are here for you and we continue to provide essential services to help people who are blind or visually impaired seek independence. For more information or to make a donation in support of CABVI’s services, please visit www.cincyblind.org or call 513-221-8558. Thank you!

The Dragonfly Foundation Marks 10 Years of Providing the Best Support Services to Pediatric Cancer Patients and their Families

The Dragonfly Foundation marked a major milestone in the Foundation’s development, celebrating its 10th anniversary on August 10th. The Dragonfly Foundation has helped more than 5,900 pediatric cancer patients, families, and their caregivers since the Foundation launched in 2010.

The Dragonfly Foundation was started in 2010 by Christine Neitzke, and her best friend, after her son Matt was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Like most, Christine and her husband, Jim, never thought their family would be affected by pediatric cancer. Fortunately, Christine, Jim, Matt and his brother Sam had the support of family, friends, and the community during their cancer journey; many other patients and families are not as fortunate. Motivated by the lack of support some of Matt’s fellow pediatric cancer patients had in their lives, The Dragonfly Foundation was created. Today, Matt Neitzke is cancer-free and The Dragonfly Foundation has grown to support thousands.

In the last 10 years, The Dragonfly Foundation has expanded to help patients not just in Cincinnati, but also in Dayton, Ohio and in Chicago, Illinois. Dragonfly has also relocated to a new location at 506 Oak Street, just blocks away from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where patients and their families can find strength, comfort, and joy. The new Landing includes spaces where children can play with toys, video games, make crafts, and their parents and caregivers can enjoy time with them in a relaxing space.

“Over the last 10 years, it has been amazing to see the growth of our organization. We would like to thank our volunteers, donors, patients, families and especially Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for their support and allowing us to make an impact on families facing pediatric cancer,” said Christine Neitzke, Executive Director.

The Dragonfly Foundation provides programs that enhance the quality of life for children and young adults as they’re going through treatment, provides help with urgent needs and life logistics, and emotional, relational and practical support.

“They work hard to keep smiles on our faces, to make us feel like we are normal for a day, and to give us a place where we can breathe, feel loved, and share our experiences,” said a Dragonfly Mom.

The Dragonfly Foundation is also a second family for pediatric cancer patients, many of whom have moved to Cincinnati for treatment. Dragonfly works to create a sense of normalcy during trying times and create happy distractions and great memories for our patients & families. The Foundation does this by planning family outings, group trips to a sporting event or theme park, a special visit from a celebrity, or even just a special gift during a difficult moment of their treatment can make all the difference for a young child.

Chris Collonsworth PROSCAN Fund

THE CRIS COLLINSWORTH PROSCAN FUND (CCPF) announces the 19th Annual Pink Ribbon Luncheon will transform into a virtual format with a “Pink Pop Up Party” theme. Supporters will be able to register to view a special online program hosted by Cris Collinsworth featuring a performance by favorite returning star Martina McBride. The presentation will be an evening broadcast that supporters can view from home on October 1, 2020 at 7pm. There is the option to become a virtual Hostess and host a small viewing party while observing social distancing guidelines or viewers can also watch individually and can tune in through the CCPF website, Facebook and Youtube. For nineteen years, the Pink Ribbon Luncheon has drawn huge crowds at their annual breast cancer fundraising event.

“While it was a difficult decision to forgo our in-person celebration at DUKE Energy Convention Center, we felt it was the appropriate step, given the current circumstances. This allows us to commemorate one of Cincinnati’s most anticipated events, raise funds for our Pink Ribbon Programs, and find a way for us all to enjoy a fun evening together while observing social distancing guidelines,” said Brook Drummond, Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund Executive Director.

The funds raised at The Pink Ribbon are used to support the Pink Ribbon Centers and programs which fill a critical need by providing access to early detection services and support. CCPF operates two Pink Ribbon Centers at Tri-County and Red Bank. Programs include Mammogram Match, providing free mammograms to qualifying patients, Cruisin’ for a Cure which offers transportation to appointments removing barriers from receiving care, Pink Ribbon Bags containing comfort and care items for newly diagnosed patients, Pink Ribbon Empowerment Program (PREP) providing education and community outreach, and the Survivor Circle connecting new patients with survivors of breast cancer.

To view the event, register at pinkribbon.ccpf.org. There is no charge to view the program, however, all donations are greatly appreciated in this unprecedented time and can be made at the time of registration or by phoning the CCPF offices. ■

The 19th Annual Pink Ribbon Pop Up Party is made possible thanks to Presenting Sponsor Harold C. Schott Foundation and Platinum Sponsor The Albach, Wells and Dauer Group at Morgan Stanley

For more information on viewing this event contact Abby O’Neill, CCPF Assistant Director at 866.577.7465 or aoneill@proscan.com. Or visit pinkribbon.ccpf.org.

The Salvation Army

Here. for good.

Like many organizations, we have made the careful decision to cancel a critical fundraising event to protect the health and wellbeing of our supporters, advisory members, staff, officers, and those we serve as the COVID-19 global health concerns persist.

While we will miss the fellowship of being together, we ask you to join us in spirit to provide for our community.

Together, we face an unprecedented holiday season, challenged not only to brighten Christmas for many, but also to meet new depths of need as this crisis continues to unfold. We have witnessed how there is no quarantine from hunger, homelessness or poverty.

You can join us and be Here. For Good. Learn more at salvationarmycincinnati.org/hereforgood.
