From the Editor-in-Chief

Thirteen years ago I started one of the greatest love affairs of my life. My children were 4, 6, 8, and 10. I was married with a house in the suburbs, a pool, and a lake house. My suv was constantly full of sports gear or antiques, I loved my career, and we traveled often enough. Weeknights and weekends that weren’t spent at the lake were spent at horse shows, swim meets, or baseball games. Something was missing, and I knew in my heart what it was. Secretly I searched websites and social media looking for the perfect match. I had a general idea of a handsome, athletic specimen - with dark eyes and hair. When I found her, my life changed forever. My standard poodle, Ginger, is possibly the most “wanted” and “planned for” dog of all time. Having grown up on a farm, I always wanted my kids to have a healthy relationship and connection to animals (and desperately wanted to rescue a pup) - but our family is full of allergies; and after a while, the never-ending stream of beta fish grew tiring. In terms of timing, I wanted to maximize their memories with a dog, so my search began in earnest. We visited friends, family, and breeders with supposedly “hypoallergenic” breeds, but left each time with puffy eyes, hives, and sneezing. One day, while at the lakehouse, I noticed that when the kids played with our neighbor’s dog, they had no reaction. Maggie was a standard poodle, though she didn’t look like my idea of a froufrou standard poodle. She was tall, trim, and fluffy - and loved my kids. Contacting the breeder, I learned that a litter was due soon, and put in my deposit. We picked up Ginger in the fall of 2008 and fell in love instantly. The first few weeks were rough (Ginger had great taste - chewing the end off a rather nice oriental runner and the zipper from a particularly cute skirt from Anthropologie), but we fell into a routine of running together, swimming with the kids, and learning new tricks faster than we could think of them. Over the years, Ginger has developed a keen awareness of when someone needed an extra snuggle, a little nudging or direction (she can be pretty darn bossy, in fact), and just how far she can push the limits. Every time we took a “back-to-school” pic, Ginger would run out to the front steps and sit proudly, comically looking like she believed she was heading back, too. This winter has been tough on Ginger, and her health is fading. It’s been tough to think about life without one of the most important members of our family, but I am dedicated to walking right beside her through these last days. In this issue, we are giving a nod to the importance of furry friends in honor of one of the loves of my life. To those of you who have loved and lost a family pet, my heart goes out to you. And to anyone whose love is still happily chasing a frisbee, stick, or ball - here’s to many a fun summer day losing yourself in the simplicity and friendship of an animal.

Passionate Pursuits: Setting Sail Written by Amelia Jeffers / Photography courtesy Sail Martha’s Vineyard

If the pandemic has proven anything, it has shown us that there are a lot of ways to entertain yourself while stuck at home. As the world opens up, many people are seizing the opportunity to explore interests that were cultivated during hours of exploring the internet, living life vicariously through influencers and posters who are passionate about one thing or another. On the first night of my latest sailing course, the instructor acknowledged that our cohort is the largest in the history of the adult program. When he asked us to introduce ourselves and explain why we signed up, I was surprised by the number of people who cited YouTube videos of around-theworld sailing adventures as their inspiration. It turns out that a lot of people dream of sunsets in the Mediterranean, but are intimate by the cost and learning curve associated with sailing. Like many avocations, sailing has a reputation fueled by the highest tiers of the sport. In this case, the America’s Cup and its billionaire boy’s club paint a picture of a pastime that is simply inaccessible for most of us. But affordable and approachable options abound - even for landlocked central Ohioans. Several years ago, I headed to Erie Islands Sailng School in Sandusky for a long weekend and the first of what I had hoped to be several certifications for “big boat” sailing. The American Sailing Association’s “ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing” taught me to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 24 feet in length in light to moderate winds. I learned basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, the beginnings of sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic 14 slmag.net

navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards. And, most of all - I learned that I can’t think about anything going on with work, family, friends, or home while trying not to take a boom to my head and trim a mainsail at the same time. We are fortunate to have Lake Erie so close, because most sailors agree that if you can sail Erie, the ocean is a breeze. Sheer surface area coupled with mostly shallow depths makes Lake Erie a rough body of water prone to sudden shifts in wind and waves. But even a two-hour drive and the commitment to a long weekend away can be difficult to fit into life with teenagers and a busy career, so my ASA coursework has taken a backseat. Longing for an opportunity to be back on the water, to hone my skills (and hoping to not lose too many of them), and to experience the refreshing mindfulness of one of my favorite activities, I set out to find an option that I could incorporate into my life this summer. Luckily, Columbus has two terrific learn-to-sail programs: Hoover Sailing Club in Westerville and Leatherlips Yacht Club in Dublin. Both offer classes for adults, and both provide storage and club activities and amenities for anyone interested in investing in a personal sailing craft. Traveling to a water location this summer? Check online for a yacht or sailing club in the area. Most will have open-houses, short courses, and even opportunities to sign up to crew a bigger boat - you don’t necessarily need experience. Check bulletin boards or show up at the dock — or try the Go Sailing app — to see if anyone needs a crew member. The sailing community is very social - and generally enthusiastic about engaging new people. sl

Be Well: The Benefits of Furry Friends Written by Abby Jeffers / Photography courtesy Gigi’s Shelter for Dogs

Evidenced by the rise in pet adoptions during the pandemic, the wellness boost and stress relief benefits provided by having pets has been well-known and documented. Whether that increase in adoptions is attributable to the extra time at home or a desire for companionship, a recent article in Forbes Magazine claims that around 68% of American homes have a pet, and the rise is promising for our national and individual health. According to the CDC, pets provide a number of physical and emotional well-being benefits, like “decreased feelings of loneliness,” lowered stress levels, and “increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities” as well as social activities. Stanford University’s BeWell News also describes the benefits of pet ownership, including the “purpose and meaning” that people can derive from pet ownership as well as the increased focus during crises, emotional support, and lack of judgment that pets can provide. In addition, the same article quotes Martha Kessler, the Stanford University School of Medicine Executive Director of Finance and Administration, as saying that “just petting a dog can help release endorphins and lower heart rates.” Anecdotal evidence further proves these points: pets like dogs need exercise and attention, and dog owners get to spend time outside playing with and walking their pet. Moreover, dogs are often used as therapy dogs for people in hospitals or veterans with mental health challenges, and some therapists prescribe Emotional Support Animals to supplement their clients’ course of treatment and improve their mental and emotional well-being. Of course, potential pet owners should do thorough research on a pet before adopting or welcoming them into their home, and 16 slmag.net

owners need to understand the pet’s needs, including exercise, nutrition, home environment, socialization, and costs like vet visits and pet supplies. Some pets are being returned to shelters as pandemic restrictions lift and people return to in-person work, straining often already-crowded shelters. One central Ohio organization has created a revolutionary approach to canine homelessness, and as a result helped to bring more pets to families seeking companionship. Founded by local business leaders and philanthropists, Tina and George Skestos (and named for their family pet), Gigi’s brings dogs from overcrowded and rural shelters that lack enough potential adopters to shelters with more space and higher demand while providing grooming, behavioral medicine, and veterinary care in the process, allowing community shelters to focus more on caring for dogs and getting them adopted. The impressive $4M+ facility sits on a 3 acre campus with three buildings and 26,000 total square feet where over 2800 dogs have been treated and saved; 12,000 dogs have received free vaccines; and over 500 dogs have undergone low-cost surgeries in the on-site, dedicated veterinary clinic. Despite the (hopefully) impending return to post-pandemic normalcy, there are solutions for caring for a pet while returning to in-person work, and the research shows that pets are beneficial for physical and emotional wellness. Even in postpandemic life, pets can provide companionship, routine, exercise, and stress relief, contributing to overall happiness and wellness. MODERNIST MARVEL Writen by Amelia Jeffers / Photography by James Henthorn

When an active family of creatives sought to abandon the traditional architecture of a white-painted brick in the suburbs in favor of a cool country retreat, they knew that site selection would be critical. Patiently awaiting the perfect spot, they jumped at the opportunity to acquire a heavily wooded hillside property overlooking an ample waterway and stunning waterfall below. The wife went to work assembling a venerated team from among her peers, while the husband carefully and strategically resected 18 slmag.net

brush and trees in an effort to get a better grasp on the possibilities without sacrificing the coverage provided by immense foliage. Signing on as architect was Brian Kent Jones; Kevin Knight would handle construction; and SL Interiors managed the design. According to Jones, “This was a collaboration that eroded any notion of a project with a single author; it was a beautiful shared canvas of artistic and creative contributions that extended into the reach of craftsmen and suppliers.”

Though the entry is flooded with light from walls of glass, the home primarily "turns its back to the street" (as described by builder, Kevin Knight). Light fixture by Moooi.

slmag.net 19

In classic modernist fashion, the home is primarily a series of function-driven boxes connected by corridors that emphasize sightlines.

Though the topography of the site would necessitate certain aspects of the structure, the overarching vision was anchored in creating a home with a laid back feel of luxury and ease. Kevin Knight challenged the notion that we need to escape home to find rest and recreation by asking, “Why shouldn't we find our homes competing with a resort-like vibe?” A desire to maximize the organic assets and privacy afforded by the foliage, creek, and waterfall drove the decision to orient the residence toward the rear. An unassuming facade greets guests at the circular drive, while the mass of the structure is absorbed by the hillside as it steps down into the earth. The bold composition is anchored by the juxtaposition of solids and voids; each created by an earthy yet refined palette of materials that records the effects of nature and blends with the landscape. In classic Modernist fashion, the home is primarily a series of function-driven boxes connected by corridors that emphasize sightlines, allowing the architecture to bring order to what could be 20 slmag.net

chaos in today’s hectic, multi-tasking lifestyle. Each area is tailored to a specific activity or need, with generous passageways providing the necessary separation to allow multiple activities to take place throughout the house at once. Fenestrated walls running nearly the entire length of the rear of the home offer stunning views and transparency that gives the effect of a lightbox from outside. The split-level entry divides the main level from the terrace level below. Steps away, a swanky lounge occupies this end of the residence with lounge seating and the family's baby grand piano. White oak floors continue through to the heart of the home, where the expansive family room and kitchen walk out onto a cantilevered deck that serves dual-purpose as poolside shelter underneath. With beautiful, zen-like minimalism that persists throughout, the kitchen is a simple swath of sleek quartz counters (Danby marble on the island) atop rich hardwood cabinets by Cooley Custom Cabinetry. Clerestory windows serve to brighten the family space.

This rendering by architect Brian Kent Jones displays the quintessential elements of Modernistic architecture incorporated in the design.

Unassuming from the street, the impressive home steps down the hillside, which serves as a natural camouflage, absorbing the mass and volume of the residence.

A cantilevered deck on the main level serves dual-purpose as poolside shelter on the terrace level of the home.

A swanky lounge is anchored by back-lit custom shelving designed by the homeowner on one end, and the family's baby grand piano set against a fenestrated wall at the other.

24 slmag.net

The wine grotto is lined with raw concrete culverts and terminates in glass and steel windows set perpendicular to one of the highlights of the site: a natural waterfall.

The design program is inspired by a few of the family's favorite places, including California wineries and Mexican resorts.

slmag.net 25

Walls of windows and an infinity pool offer breathtaking reflections of the incredible views.

At the opposite end, an owners’ suite is tucked away and nestled into the treetops with his and her stacked studios separating it from the more public areas of the home. Roof-top terraces incorporate a live-roof design with limestone pavers, bringing function and beauty to an element that is often lost. Though the entire team admitted that it is difficult to identify a single favorite element of the residence, all conceded that the coolest feature could be the terrace-level wine grotto. Innovative use of raw concrete culverts lining the room gives the impression of a cozy, well-aged cellar, and glass and steel windows 26 slmag.net

at the end give light and view to the waterfall that influenced so many aspects of the design. Creature comforts abound at this level of the home, with large, cushy sofas inside and out. The infinity-edge pool with cumaru deck and grass strolling alley are bordered by a lovely stacked stone wall that drops dramatically with the slope of the property. Frank Lloyd Wright said that the adage of form following function is often misunderstood: “Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” There can be no doubt that this Modernist marvel lives up to those expectations. sl

Franklin Park Conservatory’s Hat Day Rescheduled In light of the uncertain environment and Covid restrictions that were still in place in early May, Franklin Park Conservatory’s 20th Les Chapeaux dans le Jardin has been rescheduled to Friday, September 24. This special anniversary Hat Day Luncheon (planned under the leadership of chairs Ann Isaly Wolfe, a co- founder of Hat Day, and daughter, Katie Wolfe Lloyd) represents one of Columbus’ premier social traditions of the year, and one of the Conservatory’s most significant fundraising events. More than 550 guests gather under a grand marquee in the beautiful gardens, adorned in their favorite hats, to enjoy lunch with friends. Funds raised benefit the Conservatory’s Pre-K and K-12 education programs. These programs blend the Conservatory’s unique resources with hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences, cultivating a connection between youth and nature. Plants and the environment, health and nutrition, and fine arts are woven into educational and interactive experiences. Thanks to generous contributions, these vital youth education programs continue to expand their reach in the community. Here are just a few of programs offered by the Conservatory: Pre-K and K-12 School Groups Field trips and virtual learning programs provide invaluable, hands-on education and address specific academic content standards, while helping children build healthy connections to nature that last a lifetime. The school programs focus on participatory, inquirybased learning experiences – whether in the classroom or at the Conservatory -- to get students excited about nature, plant science, gardening and art. In a typical year, these school programs impact more than 13,000 students. 28 slmag.net

Reduced Costs for Low-Income Schools To help ensure that in-person field trips and virtual learning opportunities are available to all schools, the Conservatory offers reduced-cost and scholarship-funded options for low-income schools. These programs help ensure that students in any school system or neighborhood have the opportunity for an educational experience at the Conservatory. Nature School This early-childhood education program offers fun, age-appropriate exploration of plants, insects and the natural world for children ages 3-5, using science, language arts, math, art and music. Scout Programs & Camps Programs for both Girl Scouts and Scouts are designed to engage them with nature and inspire them to garden through hands-on activities and camp-in programs ranging from seed planting and creating eco-pots, to insect exploration and more. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden Drop-in programs in the Children’s Garden engage children and families with hands-on experiences in science and nature, including study of wetlands and the water cycle; pollinators and insects; native Ohio trees and wildlife; citizen science projects; gardening, harvesting and tasting; art with natural materials, and much more. Programs change weekly, so there is always something new to explore. sl For more information, visit fpconservatory.org.

CHICAGO | When it opened in March, the 223-room, seven-story Sable at Navy Pier, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, became the first hotel built "on top" of Lake Michigan. The $100 million build is a joint venture by James McHugh Construction Co. and Powers & Sons Construction Co. "A project like this comes around once in a lifetime, and it's the exact type of complex construction – from building over water to working around Navy Pier's 9 million annual visitors – that we excel at and like to execute," said John Sheridan, executive vice president of McHugh Construction. Named after the USS Sable, a naval training ship that served as a Great Lakes luxury cruise ship prior to World War II, the Sable at Navy Pier is more than 800-feet long and affords each of the guest rooms a one-of-a-kind views of the Windy City skyline. Also re-opening this spring adjacent to the hotel is another McHugh/Powers build— Offshore—the world's largest rooftop bar (as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records) on top of Navy Pier's Shelter building. Room rates at Sable at Navy Pier begin at $204. For more information and reservations, visit sablehotel.com.

FUN IN THE SUN

An American entrepreneur brings a British Classic back to life. Written by Andre James

Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis in the 1950s for the British Motor Company (BMC), the original Mini Moke, the site of which conjures images of the breezy beach party era à la Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, was originally intended for use by the British army as a parachute-droppable vehicle. Too-low ground clearance and an underpowered engine made the classic Moke unfit for military service. However, when BMC pivoted to public sales in the 1960s, the quirky car quickly gained popularity among the civilian sector, despite a laundry list of shortcomings that included a propensity to rust quickly. After BMC ceased Moke production in 1968, the brand persisted in Australia, where it was built from 1966 to 1981 and known first as the Morris Mini Moke and then the Leyland Moke. Between 1980 and 1984, 8,500 "Californian" Mokes were built at British Leyland's subsidiary in Portugal. The final iteration of the original Mini Moke was produced by Italian motorcycle manufacturer Cagiva. From 1990-1993 Cagiva’s build of 1,500 Mokes is a small fraction of the more than 50,000 that were manufactured between 1965-1993. Entrepreneur Todd Rome, the founder of Blue Star Jets, first fell in love with the curious Mini Moke while vacationing on the tiny Caribbean paradise of St. Barts. After selling Blue Star Jets, he founded Moke America in 2016 and set about reengineering the 20th-century icon into a 21st-century E-car. To tackle the ground clearance issue, Rome's Moke sits on 14-inch wheels. The glass windshield has been redesigned to be larger and sit higher to accommodate taller drivers better. A refinement of the painting process for the steel and fiberglass chassis better fends off rust. There's also a four-wheel drivetrain, hydraulic steering, front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, a parking brake, a Bluetooth sound system, and a backup camera. For the ultimate ease of use, the car can be fully charged in eight hours (providing 40 miles of range) by plugging it into any standard household 110 outlet. Street legal and completely customizable from roof-to-rims, each Moke is made at the company's plant in Sarasota, Florida, and takes approximately 90 days from order placement to delivery. While the Moke's cool factor is undeniably off the charts, you won't be breaking any land speed records as it has a top speed of just 25 MPH, which drops to around 15 MPH on steep grades. At present, Moke America is producing a 007 San Monique edition that pays homage to the classic Moke James Bond drove in LIVE AND LET DIE during his visit to the fictional Caribbean island of San Monique. The eco-friendly electric vehicle is presently shuttling guests around at resorts including Hotel Joaquin in Laguna Beach, Isla Bella Resort in the Florida Keys, SLS South Beach in Miami, and The Menhaden in Greenport. Moke America has partnered with brands including Louis Vuitton, Vilebrequin, and Serena Williams Fashion on bespoke Mokes, and the company boasts a cadre of celebrity fans who pop up behind the wheel on the company's Instagram feed. Starting at $19,475 you can build and order your Moke at MokeAmerica.com. sl

PINOT OFF THE BEATEN PATH Written by Bonnie Graves

Historically associated with France’s Burgundy region – most notably, the Côte d’Or, or “Golden Slope” – the pinot noir grape has had an ancient and varied evolution in the wine world. The six acres planted by the Zellerbachs in 1953, later part of the lauded Hanzell Winery in Sonoma, are considered to be the oldest plot in the United States with seminal plantings in Oregon and in the Finger Lakes happening shortly thereafter. But pinot was slow to catch on with American consumers, who initially favored cabernets and zinfandels, until a movie called “Sideways” re-established the grape in the minds of many. In the years since, California and Oregon have seen an explosion of pinot noir both in terms of acreage and brands. But where else does pinot thrive? For lovers of this grape, a grape known for being finicky to grow and transcendent to taste, getting off the established pinot path is a great way to fully experience its many expressions. Pinot noir thrives in more marginal climates, and most particularly needs a strong diurnal shift to ripen while preserving trademark acidity. Warm days need to be offset by cool nights, and threats like mold, hail, frost, under-ripening versus burned skins, etc., all combine to make pinot noir farmers nervous. But when the microclimate is right, pinot noir can be epic. Below are five bottles of pinot noir from places you might not expect. Each is made in small-lots, by hand and by winemakers who favor minimal intervention. Each of these speaks of its place, its “terroir,” with unique aromas and textures that are still 46 slmag.net

unmistakably pinot. From Austria to New Zealand to the UK to Chile to South Africa, these pinots are worth seeking out: Global warming is a key factor impacting many winegrowing regions; for Austria, typically a bastion of white grapes like riesling and grüner veltliner, it means that the potential to produce reds like pinot noir is expanding dramatically. As the vitis vinifera ripening band moves inexorably northward, places like Austria’s Thermenregion are making unexpectedly spectacular pinots. A favorite producer is Johanneshof Reinisch, where a trio of brothers are making waves just thirty minutes south of Vienna. With vines that are over twenty years old planted on limestone soils, the Reinisch pinots have beautiful, herbaceous notes of cedar with cherry and anise. 2017 Johanneshof Reinisch, “Grillenhügel” (Thermenland, Austria) SRP $35, www.circovino.com, www.j-r.at Another winegrowing region directly impacted by warming trends is in the United Kingdom, not an area typically associated with making wines, although mead and whiskey and beer have done just fine. Master Sommelier Laura Rhys is the Global Ambassador for Gusbourne Wines, located at the estate in Kent which dates to the year 1410. Her mission in tandem with winemaker Charlie Holland is to convince the world that English “fizz” and the pinot noir that often goes into it can be world-class. While much of their proprietary pinot is made into Champenoise-inspired bubbles, their still pinot noir is well worth ferreting out if you can find it.

Laura Rhys - Gusbourne

2018 Gusbourne Estate, “Boot Hill Vineyard” (West Sussex, UK) SRP $70, www.broadbent.com/usa, www.gusbourne.com A far cry from the chalky soils of Kent is the tiny Chilean region of Limarí, where a pocket of coastal limestone has proven perfect for pinot noir. The Legado reserva bottling from producer De Martino is an example of why sommeliers try wines blind – you’d never guess this amazing pinot is from a mostly unknown region in Chile and that it only costs about $20. It’s that good. With winemaker Marcelo Retamal recently named international Winemaker of the Year, the cat is out of the proverbial bag. Concentrated notes of red fruits and purple violets with a hint of forest combine in a medium-weight pinot noir that way overdelivers for the price and then some. 2018 De Martino Reserva, “Legado” (Limarí, Chile) SRP $20, www.broadbent.com/usa, www.demartino.cl Heading around to the other half of the Southern Hemisphere, we arrive at New Zealand where pinot noir has quickly established itself as a contender to its flagship friend, sauvignon blanc. While the bulk of NZ’s exports are still fairly inexpensive grocery store whites, winemaker and Master of Wine Steve Smith has tirelessly championed quality over quantity. Steve pioneered Craggy Range, one of New Zealand’s most successful wineries, before partnering with investor and friend Brian Sheth in 2017 to launch Pyramid Valley. Farmed biodynamically, the

Steve Smith and Brian Sheth - Pyramid Valley

wines from their two estate vineyards in North Canterbury and further south in Central Otago are impeccably pure expressions of just how great Kiwi wines can be. The 2018 pinot noir from Otago, widely considered to be one of the premium sites for the grape across the globe, is exceptionally silky with aromatic notes of lush cranberry spice, orange peel and juniper, and is also entirely vegan. 2018 Pyramid Valley Estate (Central Otago, New Zealand) SRP $50, www.pyramidvalley.co.nz Lastly, if ever there were an unsung country making amazing wines that aren’t exported widely enough, it’s South Africa. Wine importer TRUWINES is looking to change that as founder Jesse Balsimo’s mission is to bring small-lot, family-farmed wines from South Africa to the States. While chenin blanc and pinotage South Africa’s homegrown favorite - remain the most widely planted white and red grapes, the pinot noirs coming out of cooler climate parcels continue to impress. Oak Grove’s location in Elgin, a smaller subdivision of the Western Cape of South Africa, features south-facing slopes at nearly 1500 feet above sea-level, and its wines are remarkable. The 2018 Groenlandberg pinot noir is an homage to the Green Mountains that tower above. 2018 Oak Grove, “Groenlandberg” (Elgin, South Africa) SRP $50, www.truvino100.com, www.oakvalley.co.za/wines/groenlandberg sl

THE PALM BEACHES

The enduring appeal of America's First Resort Destination Written by Bridget Williams

The last time I visited The Palm Beaches in Southeast Florida, I was excited to attend a cabaret show at The Colony Hotel in the Town of Palm Beach. While the show, a bastion of a bygone era, lived up to my expectations, it was clear from the sea of silver topping the heads of my fellow showgoers in the hotel's celebrated Royal Room that my affinity for the genre was an anomaly for my age. When we headed up to bed that evening humming tunes from the Great American Songbook, I couldn't help but notice that the nearly 75-year-old hotel was certainly showing its age. The former raucous realm of the 'Rat Pack' crowd felt more "Sleepytime Down South," à la The Greenbrier. My how things have changed. The brainchild of Henry Flager, who, in 1893, declared Palm Beach a "veritable paradise," built the largest hotel structure in 48 slmag.net

the world—The Royal Poinciana—in Palm Beach, enabled by his Florida East Coast Railway system. Since then, The Palm Beaches has grown to encompass 39 towns and cities, stretching from Jupiter/Tequesta to the north and Boca Raton to the south. Even though The Palm Beaches has been a renowned warmweather getaway for 125-years, you'd think the world had discovered a new playground based on all of the buzz of late in travel magazines. "For generations, The Palm Beaches has provided matchless service that complements its definitive reputation as a world-renowned vacation destination. As the world embarks on a new era of travel, The Palm Beaches has remained enduring and timeless," said Nick Parks, Vice President Marketing, Discover The Palm Beaches. While there's so much newness, there's still a discernable level of comforting familiarity to be found for repeat guests.

The Colony Hotel

Interiors of the Aerin Lauder-designed Villa Jasmine at The Colony Hotel

Terrace of the Jasmine Villa at The Colony Hotel

In town for a long weekend to take in the Palm Beach International Boat Show (pbboatshow.com), The Colony once again served as our home base. Perfectly positioned to have a flipflop on the sand and a well-heeled toe on Worth Avenue, New York investment banker Andrew Wetenhall and his wife Sarah bought the 89-room property in 2016. They immediately set about transforming it into their vision of a family-friendly boutique luxury resort that nods to its legacy without leaning on it too heavily. A similar hint of nostalgia pervades The Palm Beaches during its current renaissance, due in part to affluent East Coasters, who, rather than WFH in the doldrums of winter, have decamped to a warmer and sunnier shore. At The Colony (rooms from $275/thecolonypalmbeach. com), a newly refreshed Living Room, designed in collaboration between Kemble Interiors and the venerable French firm de Gournay, is quintessentially Palm Beach and the most recent phase of a complete hotel restoration. Playfully popping up throughout the bespoke, hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper, the design of which is based on a mid-century mural that adorned the lobby when the hotel opened in 1947, is Johnny Brown, the hotel's mascot. The cheeky spider monkey pays homage to the island's most famous primate of the same name that was a fixture on the shoulder of famed architect Addison Mizner throughout the 1920s. "I discovered an old postcard image of the mural 50 slmag.net

titled 'The Early Days in Palm Beach,'" said Sarah Wetenhall. "We worked hand-in-hand with de Gournay to create this unique 'love letter' to The Colony and Palm Beach." With a host of small, inviting vignettes, each with head-turning furniture and accessories, the Living Room feels more like a private home than a lobby, a notion further supported by the steady stream of guests that choose to linger in the chic space. The Colony also recently unveiled 'AERIN Villa Jasmine,' a 2,100-square-foot guest villa that dates to 1929 and reimagined by Aerin Lauder using pieces from both her eponymous collection and woven rattan furniture by British brand Soane. If the Living Room is The Colony's heart, then Swifty's is its pulse. Launched this past December, the indoor/outdoor restaurant is a "pop-up" of a Manhattan institution beloved for decades until it closed in 2016. A hub of activity throughout the day, during dinner, the scene is the place to be seen, with the "who's who" of the area packed around the pool and under the tented hanging gardens. "Everyone is here," I heard one smartly dressed gentleman remark as he surveyed the room before sashaying into the crowd. Don't miss the crushed avocado appetizer, accompanied by addictive tortilla chips drizzled avocado honey and sprinkled with sea salt. The Colony's beach shuttle, topped by a paddleboard wrapped in the same whimsical sea grapes-leaf print found on its seats, is

cute-as-a-button, but the beach setup provided to guests is even more so with pink-and-white striped beach chairs, fringed umbrella, a bubblegum pink Yetti cooler. History buffs will want to check out the nearby Henry Morrison Flagler Museum (flaglermuseum.us). Completed in 1902, this 75-room, 100,000-square-foot mansion truly embodies the opulence of the Gilded Age. For a more active pursuit, book a bike or walking tour with local Leslie Diver of Island Living Tours (561.309.5790), who provides a history behind the hedges experience, during which she imparts her palpable enthusiasm for the Town of Palm Beach's unique architecture. The Kennedys were among the area's most famous guests, and their enduring appeal is evidenced by a photo of a ski-masked Jackie in the window of many Worth Avenue boutiques reminding people to "mask up." The 35th President's "Winter White House" grabbed headlines when it sold in 2020 for $70 million. A lesserknown Kennedy connection lies across the water from the estate on Peanut Island in nearby Riviera Beach. Visit Palm Beach (visitpalmbeach.com) leads both kayak and boat tours of the eightyacre island near the Lake Worth inlet, which is also the site of a bunker built for President Kennedy. On nearby Singer Island, construction crews are busy working on the Amrit Ocean Resort and Residences (amritoceanresort.com), scheduled to open in late summer. Designed around mindful living

and proactive wellness principles, the centerpiece of the two-tower development is a four-story, 100,000 square-foot cutting-edge spa with a plant-centric restaurant. The property is part of a hotel building boom that includes the recently opened 32-room White Elephant Palm Beach, and a trio of properties scheduled to open in late 2021 and early 2022: The Ray in Delray Beach, the Mandarin Oriental in Boca Raton, and Banyan Cay Resort & Golf in West Palm Beach. During our visit, we checked out several newly opened restaurants. At Elisabetta's Ristorante (elisabettas.com) in downtown West Palm Beach, crowds packed the multi-tiered patio overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. The all-scratch kitchen includes a trio of pizza ovens imported from Italy, turning out pies that made this pizza lover very happy. Complementing the extensive menu is a 400-bottle wine list (with 70 wines available by the glass) and classic Italian cocktails. I loved the airy barrel-vaulted dining room at Lionfish Delray (lionfishdelray.com) on Atlantic Avenue. At this outpost of a San Diego sustainable hotspot (twice recognized as a James Beard Foundation Smart Catch Leader), the sea-to-table cuisine's quality mirrors the clever interior design. The restaurant's namesake is available to order in a multitude of ways, and we opted for a citrusinfused ceviche, as well as a deliciously spiced and perfectly grilled octopus. An inventive cocktail program includes house-made syrups and infusions.

Lucky Shuck

View of the Jupiter Lighthouse from Charlie & Joe's at Love Street

A few blocks away is Avalon Steak & Seafood (avalondelray. com), a concept from New York's veteran hospitality operators Host Restaurants. Sitting streetside on an elevated terrace bordered by a glass partition, we were rapt observing the dinner theatre in the restaurant as well as the constant parade of people from all walks of life making their way up and down the avenue. Their selection of premium wet- and dry-aged steaks are the centerpiece of the menu, and they arrive at the table with a perfectly seared crust. I particularly enjoyed the "Angry" lobster, enlivened by fermented house sriracha and ginger, and served with Pullman toast so as not to waste a drop of the delectable sauce. Decidedly more casual yet no less delicious is Lucky Shuck in Jupiter (luckyshuckjupiter.com), which opened this past February. Part of the Charlie & Joe's at Love Street (lovestreetjupiter.com) development founded by Charlie Modica and Joe Namath, this welcoming spot is located directly across the water from the Jupiter Lighthouse. Patrons benefit from an on-site boutique seafood

market that allows commercial fishers to directly sell their catch of the day to both Lucky Shuck and BEACON, which is the development's fine dining option. The Ahi tuna poke tacos were a highlight from Lucky Shuck's unique menu, a mashup of Southern and Far East influences. Evidently, we aren't the only ones who enjoy the tiny tacos as the restaurant serves as many as 4k each week. After a thoroughly enjoyable alfresco lunch, we conquered the 109-steps of the Jupiter Lighthouse (jupterlighthouse.org). Even with everything new and notable in The Palm Beaches, it's nice to know that some things remain the same. For me, no visit to the Town of Palm Beach is complete without a stroll through the exquisitely maintained botanical gardens at the Society of the Four Arts (fourarts.org). Founded in 1936, the 10-acre campus is home to hundreds of events each year. The mélange of visitors at any given time is a testament to the enduring appeal of "America's First Resort Destination." THE ELECTRIC GRAN TURISMO The 2022 Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT Written by Andre James / Photos courtesy of Audi

Chiseled like a supermodel's cheekbones, the head-turning architecture of the 2022 Audi e-tron GT and RS e-Tron GT looks every bit like a concept car brought to reality. "The most beautiful car I have ever drawn," said Marc Lichte, Head of Audi Design, who chose these words in the fall of 2018, when the brand presented the Audi e-tron GT concept at a show car in Los Angeles. The Audi RS e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT are the first EVs from Audi Sport to be sold in the United States. They represent the third and fourth all-electric additions to Audi's US portfolio and contribute toward its goal of achieving a 30% electrified model portfolio by 2025. "The Audi RS e-tron GT is a milestone in the development of electrified high-performance models," said Lucas di Grassi, Formula E driver and entrepreneur, at the world premiere of the vehicle this past February. The e-tron's enviable aesthetics have all arisen from attention to efficiencies. A lightweight, high-strength, five-layer carbon fiber reinforced plastic roof —a first for an Audi vehicle and a segmentexclusive feature—comes standard. Permanently excited magnets are an exhilarating performance element that the Audi e-tron GT 56 slmag.net

shares with the world's most thrilling roller coasters. Found in both the front and rear axles of the e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT, permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) produce 235 horsepower at its front motor and 429 horsepower at its rear. A net combined output of 469 horsepower (up to 522 horsepower for 2.5 seconds with overboost launch control) allows the e-tron GT to repeatedly accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to a top track speed of 152 mph. In the RS, a more robust rear motor enables a net 590 horsepower and up to 637 with overboost, which shaves .8 seconds off of the 0-60 mph sprint. These acceleration figures place the RS e-tron GT on par with the V10-powered Audi R8 supercar. Standard in the RS model is the e-tron sport sound, a high-quality and progressive sound that the driver can activate and modulate its amplitude via the Audi drive select system. Audi drive select, the driving dynamics system with four modes and controlled damping, comes as standard in every e-tron GT. Standard three-chamber air suspension in the Audi e-tron GT enables a wide variation in spring rates to provide cushioned comfort for daily driving or a more reflexive tightness for track workouts. A

standard rear differential lock with fixed locking values assists during various thrust and traction scenarios. "As a fully electric gran turismo, the e-tron GT reinterprets this balancing act by not reducing performance to the sheer output but by attributing a special creative importance to efficiency as well," said Lichte. Thanks to its lightning-fast control operations, the electric all-wheel drive provides the e-tron GT with maximum dynamism, stability, and traction in any driving situation. When the driver releases the right-hand pedal, the gran turismo usually switches to coasting mode. While braking, the electric motors perform decelerations alone in the vast majority of all everyday driving situations. All Audi e-tron GT models in the US boast a 93.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a unique integrated cooling structure underneath the battery pack. The 800-volt electrical architecture comes standard with the ability to charge at an industry-benchmark 270 kW using DC fast-chargers, allowing the battery to replenish from 5-80% in just 22.5 minutes, which is among the quickest charging rates currently available of any EV. An e-tron route planner calculates the charging stops such that the

driver reaches their destination as quickly as possible. Preliminary manufacturer's estimated ranges based on approximation of EPA test cycles for a full charge are 238 miles for the e-tron GT and 232 miles for the RS e-tron GT. Inside, the cabin is spacious and outfitted with recycled materials like Alcantara and Dinamica automotive suede in lieu of leather as standard (although Nappa leather is available). The instrument panel is based on Audi's "monoposto" design that angles the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit and 10.1-inch MMI touch response displays toward the driver. An Alacanara-wrapped full-circumference and flat-bottom steering wheel is standard, with capacitive hands-on detection available. The rear luggage compartment has a volume of 14.3 cubic feet, with another 2.9 cubic-feet available beneath the hood. Those looking for the ultimate in personalized can look to the Audi exclusive range from Audi Sport GmbH. The 2022 Audi e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT will arrive in the US this summer. MSRP for the e-tron GT quattro Premium Plus is $99,900; $107,100 for the e-tron GT quattro Prestige; and $139,900 for the RS e-tron GT. sl

Ziad Nakad

By the time he was a teenager, Lebanese-born Ziad Nakad knew that he wanted to work in fashion. Fascinated by eccentric fabrics, intricate beading and the mystery of sheer embroideries, he incorporated these into early designs he sketched for family members. With the encouragement of his family, Nakad pursued formal education in dressmaking while apprenticing with masters of couture, and in 1997 his dreams took flight when he was invited to show in the Beirut International Fashion Show. Nakad's dreamy couture confections, cut to flatter and embellished to perfection, quickly garnered global attention, and women around the world can now sport his sophisticated styles. For his SS21 collection, Nakad sought refuge from news of the explosion in Beirut, from the pandemic, and from the inability to travel by crafting a collection ripe with color and symbolism. He calls the pieces "slightly frivolous" in an attempt to recall the carefree life pre-COVID. All hand-embroidered in the designer's atelier, the collection's pièce de résistance, an opulent wedding gown, required three full months of work, or, from Nakad's perspective, "three months of escape." ziadnakad.com, Photography Greg Alexander, courtesy of Méphistophélès Productions

A contemporary womenswear brand founded by Kanyinsola Onalaja following her graduation from Istituto Marangoni in 2014, the label aims to bridge the gap between Kanyinsola's Nigerian heritage and f lair for artisan crafts with Italian design aesthetics against the formality of British fashion. Recognized early as a person to watch in the industry, in 2009, she was named the FDA Young Designer of the Year. An underlying concept within all Onalaja collections always remains "Our Heritage Re-Imagined – The Africa We Don't See." The use of traditional fabrics such as Aso-oke fabric (from the indigenous Yoruba Tribe), the Tinko hand embroidery technique from the Hausa Tribe of Northern Nigeria, and other traditional basket weaving techniques play a key role within each of her collections and are juxtaposed with modern techniques and materials. Abstraction, often found within African art, is prominent in the designer's choice of patterns and embellishment. Farhad Re

During the darkest hours of the COVID lockdown in Europe, Paris-based designer Farhad Re holed up in his atelier to transform no less than 500 yards of milky-colored silk organza into a 15 piece collection that revisits the myth of Pygmalion, the eternal story of an artist who falls in love with his creation. Trained as an architect at the University of Rome, Farhad applies a sculptural approach to his couture creations. He works almost exclusively with silk organza, a material he favors for its ability to be sculpted while still maintaining an ethereal feeling. For his SS21 collection, Farhad concentrated on creating a light and architectural silhouette. The bespoke pieces boast hand-formed geometric shapes and represent his notions of purity of renewal and freedom. Farhad says he is attached to the very essence of freedom through his personal history as his Persian mother fled her country to regain the privilege to think and dress as she saw fit. farhadre.fr/, Photography by Iris Brosch, courtesy of Méphistophélès Productions

This UK-based womenswear brand is owned by award-winning British/Nigerian journalist Didi Akinyelure. She says her inspiration stems from growing up watching the avant-garde fashion choices made by her grandmother and her mother, who owns a corporate tailoring business. Didi's love for edgy fashion pieces began in her teens, leading her to launch a fashion blog in 2011 and the April & Alex brand in 2018. Didi says April & Alex's mission is to create high-quality, contemporary womenswear that emphasizes boldness and shines a light on women's empowerment. The SS21 collection is named 'Audaz,' a Latin word meaning "bold." "The 'Audax' woman is willing to take risks while not being afraid of the unconventional," said Didi. DOWNTOWN DINING Writen by Amelia Jeffers

As temperatures warm and pandemic worries cool, Columbus’ urban core is still in need of our dining attention and dollars. Though most downtown restaurants have survived the devastating confluence of events over the past year, several have shuttered for good, and more than a few have launched in what have been the most uncertain of circumstances. Notable losses include The Table on 5th and M at Miranova, while additions to the dining scene include the long-awaited opening of Budd Dairy Food Hall, Chapman’s Eat Market, and Freedom a la Cart’s new cafe on Long. Read on for just a few of our top suggestions for hitting the pavement and supporting our friends in the hospitality business.

Short North / Italian Village Short North white tablecloth staples like Hyde Park on the Cap and The Pearl offer classic as well as adapted outdoor dining options, while newer concepts like Del Mar and Lincoln Social capitalize on garage-door style windows and rooftop terraces that bring the outdoors in. Casual concepts like Bristol Republic are fun options for bbq, music, and a fabulous southern brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Tapas are an adventurous and fun alternative, and Nosh on High serves up a great selection of shareable plates like their cauliflower tots with cheese curds and vegan gravy, tuna with smoked salt, pickled ginger and soy, and the cleverly-named “What Came First” dish with chicken crisps, deviled eggs and hot sauce. The original North Market has added a few fresh faces to their best-in-class lineup, including several veterans of the pop-up and home-based catering worlds: vegan soul food proprietor Willowbeez SoulVeg, Preston’s: A Burger Joint, and The Pastry Factory. 68 slmag.net

Nearby, in Italian Village, Cameron Mitchell’s most inventive venture yet, Budd Dairy Food Hall, is a “chef-driven incubator” of 8 different kitchens, Stauf ’s Coffee Roasters, and a rotating pop-up. The building, located in Italian Village on N 4th St., was built in 1916 to serve as Budd Dairy’s main bottling and distribution plant. Today, it has been converted to a gorgeous open-concept space, with a wide variety of seating options. Plenty of outdoor deck and patio seating is available to diners, as well as a vast array of indoor options. Currently, Budd Dairy Food Hall is home to Alphabetical Comfort Kitchen, Boni Filipino Street Food, Borgata Pizza, Cluck Norris, Cousins Maine Lobster, Modern Southern Table, Pokebap, Tacos Rudos, Stauf ’s Coffee, and in the rotating “Hatch,” The Cheesecake Girl. With such diverse cuisine options, it’s almost a guarantee that even the pickiest eater in your party will find something they love.

German Village Barcelona Restaurant is housed in a building that is as beautiful as it is historic, and the beautiful bar backed with rich wood trim, warm dining area filled with local artwork, and lush, garden-like patio each offer a unique dining environment as patrons nosh on delicious and authentic Spanish cuisine. Choose from a variety of tapas before enjoying large plates or one of several mouth-watering types of paella, though the menu changes often as the chefs create innovative and delicious dishes, and stop in on the first Tuesday of each month for Tapas Tuesday, where small plates are half off from 4 p.m. until close. With a stated commitment to local food, G Michael’s Bistro and Bar serves a modern American menu with two rotating specials and a variety of distinctive small plates and entrees as well as a robust wine, beer, and cocktail menu. Start with the Rabbit Gratin, Pan-Roasted Quail, or Moroccan Spiced Lamb Sliders, but be sure to save room for entrees like the Broiled Veal Chop, Fried Walleye, and Pan-Roasted Alaskan Halibut. What’s more, every Monday, G Michael’s offers a Prix Fixe menu with an ever-changing selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts for a $35 (or $38 for carry-out) 70 slmag.net

three-course meal; each Monday’s options are posted mid-afternoon as the chef and kitchen staff take time to devise unique dishes from fresh, local ingredients selected that morning. No mention of German Village eateries would be complete without Lindey’s. Delectable American eats are served up in a classically chic ambiance and a gorgeous courtyard that ranked in OpenTable’s top 100 patios in America. To those familiar with the high-caliber restaurant, it comes as no surprise that the restaurant consistently receives awards like Best Outdoor Dining, Best Overall Restaurant, Best Date Night Dining, and more from local media. In the ultimate test of fortitude, Chef BJ Lieberman and his all-star team launched Chapman’s Eat Market nearly in the middle of the most taxing 12 months any restanteur has seen in 30 years. That Chapman’s has not only survived but thrived on their tasting menu in-house dining and a la carte carryout menu is a testament to what lies ahead for this talented group of industry veterans. Current faves are the Shallot Butter-Roasted Grouper, the Braised Duck Leg and Molé Rojo, and the ice cream - always the ice cream.

From pre-event dinner to post-event night caps, The Keep in Leveque Tower serves up a sophisticated selection. Photo by James Henthorn.

Downtown / Mid-City As we get closer to the re-opening of live entertainment in Columbus, look no further than The Keep for your pre-show dinner and drinks. Just a block away from the Ohio Theater, The Keep Kitchen and Liquor bar is the perfect start (or finish) to your night. The chef-driven, modern brasserie is a nod to the art deco elegance of its location inside the historic Leveque Tower, where it serves as a true (upscale) hotel restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Among our favorites are the Steak Frites and kimchi buttered scallops. Milestone 229, (voted the best brunch in Columbus!) is located on the Scioto Mile and offers unmatched views of downtown Columbus and the Scioto River. Inside, Milestone 229’s glass walls and high ceilings allow for beautiful sunlight to filter in during the day and views of the river and fountain outside at night. As the weather warms up, reserve a seat on the patio to enjoy Milestone 229’s prime location to the fullest. The menu, sourced from local farmers, is a modern celebration of classic 72 slmag.net

Freedom a la Cart Café + Bakery, located on Spring St., is an extension of the non-profit Freedom a la Cart, which was founded to empower survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation by providing an environment in which they can heal and grow to prepare for employment and reintegration into the community. The Café and Bakery serves a variety of sandwiches, salads, and bowls, as well as a full espresso bar. Around the corner, Wolf ’s Ridge Brewery has made the most of an unsuspecting alley by extending their tap room for outdoor seating. A dining experience that combines brilliant craft brews with intriguing and innovative dishes, the restaurant’s fortitude has not wavered as the kitchen combines bold flavors into dishes such as the Chive Gnocchi or the Mussel Puttanesca. Pro tip: don’t miss the Beets & Goat Cheese small plate - fan fave since the earliest days of Wolf ’s Ridge.

Beyond the impeccable food and service, a Jeff Ruby dining experience is also about the ambiance. Shown here is the Filet Collinsworth, a menu classic. Photo Courtesy Jeff Ruby Steakhouse.

Long the heart of downtown dining, the Gay Street restaurant corridor is home to some of Columbus’ most consistent and creative concepts. From the Ziliak family’s classic italian cuisine at Due Amici, to the boundaries-pushing, cutting-edge creations by Josh Dalton at Veritas, no one who attests to beinga “foodie” in Columbus should miss a visit (or two or three) to Gay Street. Despite the massive hit to foot traffic, several terrific options are still making it in the Arena District. Enjoy a stunning view of the city from atop the Canopy by Hilton hotel at Goodale Station, a restaurant that prides itself on its local ingredients, inspirations, and collaborations, while dining on tasty New American Cuisine like Grilled Creekstone Ribeye, Gemelli Pasta, or Buratta. Complete the meal with one of many signature cocktails (including several zero-proof non-alcoholic cocktails) or any of a number of wine or draft beer options. For those who prefer a lighter dining 74 slmag.net

experience, check out Goodale Station’s happy hour from 4-6 p.m., when “snacks” (a selection of appetizers) on the menu are half off and the menu features a selection of cocktails, beers, and wines. Nada’s bright, Latin-inspired fare is only matched by its colorful decor: enjoy delightful tacos, cocktails, and large plates surrounded by vibrant red walls or on the restaurant’s patio. Stop in for dinner and marvel over the array of striking flavor combinations on the taco menu or taste any one of the phenomenally crafted entreés, and complete the night with a margarita (classic or with a twist – like the Chile-Mango or the Cerveza Paloma). Just down the street on Nationwide Boulevard, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse is the epitome of special occasion. Beyond the impeccable food and service, a Jeff Ruby dining experience is also about the ambiance. The swanky interior is the perfect backdrop to some of the best steaks in Columbus. sl

MERRY GO ROUND

The 73rd Annual Merry Go Round benefiting The Childhood League Center was held virtually and starred celebrity host Nina West. Guests learned about how the Center has navigated challenges created by the pandemic, and heard directly from Center families and staff about the life-transforming intervention services provided in-person and virtually throughout the past year. Members of The Childhood League entertained the audience with a tribute performance, and Nina West rounded out the successful evening by reading a story. Thanks to many sponsors and donors, including the American Electric Power Foundation and Nationwide Insurance, the gala event raised much-needed funds for the Center’s early childhood educational programs and therapeutic services for children with special needs. 10 Things Paula Haines Can't Live Without Written by Seth Shanley

In 2013, Paula Haines was busy running a well-established, successful boutique marketing agency in Dublin when something drew her to Freedom a la Cart, a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation to rebuild their lives with freedom and self-sufficiency by offering comprehensive impact services, paid workforce training and a long-term community of peer-based support. To provide job skill training to survivors, a tiny food cart business had been created - which today has blossomed into a thriving box lunch and catering business, employing more than 120 survivors since its inception. First as a volunteer and then board member, Paula invested more and more of her time, talent, and energies into stewarding the vision and mission of the organization, including the launch of Eat Up! Columbus, an annual fundraising event that has now raised more than $1M for Freedom a la Cart. As the organization struggled with turnover in the Executive Director position, Paula stepped in on a temporary basis in 2016. Her passion, entrepreneurial skills, and leadership were impossible to deny, and the board asked her to assume the position permanently. Based on the response from the community, it was a brilliant decision. Paula was awarded a 2017 Pillar Award as a Nonprofit Executive Director of the Year and was named a Central Ohio Smart 50 Award Honoree for her business leadership. Freedom a la Cart received the 2019 Aspire Social Enterprise of the Year Award, was named Best Caterer in 2019 & 2020 by Columbus CEO Best of Business award, and received the 2020 Nourishing our Community Award from the Ohio Restaurant Association. On April 5, Paula and her team opened their first Freedom a la Cart Café and Bakery at 123 E Spring Street, open every day but Sunday for breakfast and lunch. The rehabilitated building stands as a beautiful example of the restored survivors for whom the intentionally-designed public and private spaces were built. Eat Up! Columbus 2021 is planned for September 4 and sells out every year. For more information about Freedom a la Cart or Eat Up! Columbus, visit freedomalacart.org. 1. Traveling in our renovated Airstream. My husband, Jerry, and I purchased and renovated a vintage 1988 Airstream motorhome. It’s our happy place! Traveling back roads, exploring small towns, and chatting with locals provides an endless supply of beautiful places to find and enjoy! Having all we need within our Airstream with the open road ahead of us is true freedom! 2. Family. Nothing brings me more joy than time with our five adult children and their families. Dinners together are heaven, but I’ll take phone calls (video preferred) or text messages (with photos, 84 slmag.net

of course). Through COVID, we held weekly family Zoom calls one of the few things I miss about the pandemic. 3. Razor-sharp chef’s knife. Cooking is how I decompress. Recipes stir my creativity, and the chopping and dicing clears my mind and helps me unwind. Fifteen years ago, my husband gave me a chef’s knife hand-crafted by Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn. I use it every day. 4. Breakfast + Lunch at Freedom a la Cart, Dinner at Chapman’s. Meetings over coffee or a meal sustain me - it’s how friendships develop and business ideas are created. Our family opened two restaurants in the past year: Chapman’s Eat Market in German Village (owned by our daughter and son-in-law, Bronwyn and BJ Lieberman) and the Freedom Cafe downtown. It’s been challenging, but so much fun to welcome the community for fellowship over great food. 5. Lakeside, OH. Our family has vacationed at Lakeside Chautauqua on Lake Erie for 30 years, so it holds a special place in our hearts and lives. It’s an environment that’s like stepping back in time, and allows me to slow down, refresh and recharge - spiritually and physically. From fresh donuts at The Patio to Fourth of July parades and fireworks over the lake, now our grandkids are being introduced to the magic of Lakeside and the tradition continues. 6. My Kindle. I read…every.single.day. Memoirs, historical fiction, adventures, thrillers, business leadership, inspirational - I enjoy it all. According to my Kindle account, last year I read about 50 books. Take my television, but please don’t take my Kindle! 7. Girlfriends. I have so many brilliant women in my life: women of faith who taught me how to be a better mom; my NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) and Vistage friends who mentor me professionally; each of the amazing women of grit + grace I have the privilege to work with at Freedom a la Cart; and my daughter, AnnMargaret, who is my BFF. I can’t live without ALL of them! 8. Farmer’s Markets. Growing up in a small Ohio farm town, I learned the value of fresh, local food and the importance of supporting local business. Since before it was trendy, we’ve been visiting markets and buying our meat and produce from local farmers. We’ve developed wonderful friendships with the purveyors at the Worthington Farmers Market and Pearl Market and always seek out local markets and small businesses on our travels. Buy local. Buy products made in the USA! 9. Tiramisu from Hills Market. It’s my guilty pleasure. Hills only stocks it once a week and it sells quickly. So when you land one, that in itself is a victory. The lady fingers are generously coffeeinfused (I think that’s the secret). It’s a slice of heaven! 10. Passion and a Purpose. At 50, I found my passion and purpose when I stepped into the interim executive director role at Freedom a la Cart. Once I found it, I couldn’t walk away! I felt God had used the random skill sets I’d developed, and various experiences in my life, to prepare me to lead the organization. It’s a blessing to live a life of passion and purpose, and for that I’m truly grateful! sl
