AN ARTFUL AFFAIR AT THE FRIST Written by Paula Ramirez
The Frist Center structure stands alone in Nashville as a historic, urban edifice rooted in streamlined 20th century elegance. The space offers a timeless Art Deco backdrop infused with the modern sensibilities of a thriving city. Located on the cusp of the downtown area, the building is an important cultural and historic landmark; its stripped classicist façade, soaring ceilings, and gleaming marble floors create a sophisticated milieu for any event. Here, wedding celebrations are a beautiful part of the rich cultural history of the center. It is a uniquely visual and sensory environment, making for a unique and artful event, while making memories of a lifetime. Couples can elect to create a completely original wedding design, take inspiration from the splendid architecture, or be guided by the array of magnificent art in the Frist Center’s galleries. Vows in the Grand Lobby, dinner and dancing in the Turner Courtyard, a kiss on the

front steps--whatever the vision, the Frist Center’s visually rich backdrop as well as their full-service event planning capabilities, makes it an ideal setting for your once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Despite the years of tradition, the space itself is modern and malleable and can be customized to accommodate anything from intimate ceremonies to extravagant receptions with ease. The Frist Center’s convenient location on Broadway puts guests in the center of one of the country’s most exciting and vibrant downtown atmospheres. Set your imagination free. Whether envisioning a seated dinner reception, tented courtyard ceremony or something else entirely, the Frist Center is a perfect location for the creation of a life experience that is artful, beautifully distinctive, and, above all, uniquely yours. LUXE LIVING Setting the Standard for Downtown Nashville Written by Paige Atwell In the skyscraping 505 headquarters, there is a towering view that, despite the hustle and bustle of downtown, you simply cannot miss. The newest addition to Nashville’s skyline stands magnificently outside the windowpane. You may have heard the saying that first impressions are key. After all, it is something that only happens once. Standing at 45 stories tall in the heart of Church Street, the 505 emulates splendor. “People look at the building and don’t have to question the quality. You immediately see and feel it,” said Jenny McClain, chief marketing officer of Giarratana Management. Perhaps that’s why units are being leased faster than they are being finished. Essentially, two vertically-integrated communities were designed and constructed with a new type of living in mind. They would encompass a level of luxury that would set a new standard for downtown living. In this coveted location, you are never more than a short walk away from the hottest restaurants, entertainment and
8
W
downtown shopping. Add on an alluring list of indoor and outdoor amenities, and mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom residences, 505 is the definition of luxury. “Downtown living is evolving in Nashville. 505 will not only provide the most options for residents, it will be the new standard of luxury living,” said McClain. Downtown living might seem like a newer concept to Nashvillians, but well known developer Tony Giarratana believed in it long before we did; 30 years ago to be exact. Expecting Nashville to expand and grow, Giarratana purchased the land on Church Street betting on what the city would become. “Our vision for 505 was a slender, glass spire that would serve as an elegant punctuation mark to define Nashville’s skyline. Not merely a taller version of Nashville’s previous residential towers, but an entirely new class of building,” explains Giarratana. “We believe Nashville is ready to move up to the next level in urban living: 505.”
From the grand architectural details to the hot spot location, each alluring aspect was designed with resident experience in mind. With over an acre of amenities, there is no shortage of entertainment. Outdoors you will find a lux saltwater pool, accompanied by a 50 ft. sunbathing terrace, regulation-size tennis, pickle ball and bocce ball courts, a cozy fire pit lounge, gourmet grilling stations and a handful of private pool side cabanas. On the inside, you’ll find an equal amount of intriguing entertainment. Multiple lounge areas allow residents the option to roam the property by day, while private dining areas and, for residents of the high-rise, a wine tasting room provide the perfect nightcap. In fact, you can do all of this, drop off your dry cleaning, have your pets groomed and take a trip to the nearby grocery without ever being more than an elevator ride away from home. If that’s simply not enough to tempt you to settle into this lavish abode, perhaps the 24/7 concierge will sway you. Need someone to water your plants while you are away? How about
dinner reservations for an out of town guest? Someone to sign for a delivery? At 505, your request is their command. It is quite evident that accessibility, convenience and hospitality are key in this opulent tower. Since Nashville is quickly growing towards a true metropolitan community, the goal is to bring in elements you would find in larger cities. “505 offers a living experience usually seen in bigger cities like Chicago or New York. Nashville is demanding this upgraded, luxury living, and we are giving it to them,” Said McClain. What sets this lustful structure apart from the rest? From the grand list of decadent amenities, to the resident driven philosophy, to call it just a living space would simply be an injustice. 505 is far more than a living experience, it is a grand lifestyle. “Our goal is not to meet their expectations, but to exceed them in every way,” said McClain. “Coming home will be the best part of their day.” Call 615.214.4505 for availability.

My grandmother, Ruth Dortch, lived by the rule ‘no amount of time, energy or resources were too much if a true memory was created,’ and that it was we set out to do” -Ruth Bailey
THE ROAD TO BAILEY Written by Lila Howell / Photographed by Paul Wharton It is an exquisitely bright and heavenly warm spring day in Nashville. The breathtakingly beautiful bride, Ruth Franklin, stands behind the doors that lead into the timeless structure of St. George’s Episcopal Church. Dressed in a custom, perfectly tailored Vera Wang gown, clutching an opulent bouquet of garden roses and peonies, she takes a deep breath and exchanges the smile with her father that he knew was coming since the day she was born. As they round the corner and pause at the doors of the nave, friends and family stand, and the beautifully intense organ music fills the room. She begins her graceful walk down the aisle, the same aisle in which her first steps as Mrs. Craig Bailey will soon be taken. As her guests bask in the beauty of this moment, she flashes back to four months ago when she was in this very room with her mother, hand-selecting the music that now fills her heart. The past eight months leading up to this moment have been filled with multiple meetings, tastings, fittings and a plethora of meticulous planning to say the least. Growing up in the Franklin family, entertaining was practically a birthright. While on the surface, attendees of the wedding may have been blown away by yet another Franklin event; there is more to the story than meets the eye.
12
W
Ruth’s admiration of her mother has always remained a constant throughout her life. A successful business woman running her family-owned trucking company, Beth Franklin thrived in the corporate world. “My mom is incredible and we’ve always had a great relationship, but the growth and development of Star Transportation, along with my mom surviving aggressive breast cancer when I was 9-years-old, captured much of her time during my youth,” says Ruth. But true to form, both Ruth and her mother have an innate ability to recognize a challenging time, in this case, the time robbed from them both by the unbearable challenges that came with battling cancer, as an opportunity to grow stronger, be better and become closer. And it was with this always present in their hearts and minds that, together, each day was joyfully started, each plan was carefully made, each color was thoughtfully selected, each hymn was faithfully assigned, each course was lovingly chosen, each glass was delicately raised and each smile was radiantly worn. “We were very excited and blessed to find the flexibility and time this past year to spend together planning this joyous occasion,” says Ruth with a twinkle in her eye.
W
13
With a detail-oriented daughter and a business minded mother, there was never any doubt that this wedding would be more than spectacular. With the excitement of being newly engaged, the holidays around the corner, and the bride-to-be being diligently focused on enterprising the launch of her business in the months prior, Beth suggested the invitations be top priority and the first step in planning this magnificent event. After all, as she so eloquently put it, “the invitations to an event are equivalent to the foyer of a home; it is setting the tone for what is to come.” And set the tone they did. Foundational from the start was identifying each and every aspect of this process, and then aligning themselves with, just like the dress, the one that was the absolute best fit. After much consultation, guidance and hours worth of meetings alongside Anna with You’re Invited, a perfectly stunning, yet classic set of invitations was created that set the standard for the magnificently meaningful moments that lay ahead. What is usually a tedious and complex process that can lead to several overwhelming moments was all but that. Any concerns were met with ease and any obstacles were
14
W
immediately dissolved as Anna’s vast experience shined from the start, naturally paving the way for what became a creative collaboration that each were proud of. While one might expect the journey to such a grand event to have its ups and downs, the process turned out to be shockingly seamless and beyond enjoyable. This can easily be accredited to the practical outlook that her family has on life. “The year mom was sick, she made it a point to teach me and my brother to start each day reflecting on how blessed we all are and to always look at the cup half full, not half empty,” explained Ruth. Heeding this advice, the newly-engaged couple made it a point to sit down and talk about what was most important to each of them and their families, and with loving compromises, everyone’s wishes came true. For the bride-to-be, her blissful day began at the childhood home of her best friend and maid of honor, Margaret Roberts. “Getting ready there was really important to me. I wanted that whole process to feel care-free and casual, and I was so blessed that Sylvia offered to open the doors of her gorgeous home to me and the ladies who made my day so special,” shares Ruth of the experience.

The day was filled with dear friends, memories and special sentiments. After a delicious ‘Bubbles and Brunch’ event hosted by her aunt, cousin and Sylvia, it was here that one of the many incredibly touching memories was made as a result of the surprise Margaret had put so much heart into planning. Standing in a circle in the trellis-covered garden, each woman gave a wish or prayer to Ruth as they opened an envelope and released a beautiful butterfly. “My grandmother loved butterflies, and it’s something that she and I always shared. That moment just felt so peaceful for me,” Ruth fondly remembers. “It was the perfect way to bring my grandmother’s presence in as a calming force before the strict timeline of the day began.” Following the ceremony, guests gathered for an elegant cocktail hour in the ravishing entrance of Schermerhorn Symphony Center to begin the reception. This grand, historic venue was draped in light and neutral hues for a whimsical, “Midsummer Night’s Dream” feel. Strategically placed streams of white tulle lined the balconies while immaculate chandeliers lit the grand foyer. Draped with elegant ivory, champagne and blush linens, the tables were adorned with an arrangement of dimly lit candles and the romantic floral centerpieces Jim Knestrick so brilliantly and beautifully created for this unforgettable evening. A stream of delicious dinner delicacies by the renowned Kristen Winston awaited guests in the center of the room. But not to worry, there was just enough room left for an evening of fun on

the dance floor. “My mom had a clear vision of what Craig and I were dreaming of for the band,” as Ruth remembers the many countless evenings spent listening to a vast array of bands. “She never lost sight of what Craig and I were searching for and took it upon herself to surprise us by booking the band, so proudly announcing we could mark that off our checklist because she had worked her magic and secured the fabulous group, Sol Fusion.” While the invitations may have only stated dinner and dancing, the evening was filled with much more fervor and flare. From the incredible Leland Riggins’ cake embellished with rose petals, to the personalized trucker hats that paid homage to her family roots, guests were presented with numerous unique experiences throughout the evening. Many of which were the magical touches of the outstanding duo of Hugh Howser and Kate Steele of H3 Events. All aspects of the wedding were tied together with a special string of adoration. A long-thought-out surprise for her new husband, Craig, was the gentleman’s hunting lounge. Smooth leather couches accompanied by warm greenery pieces, deer mounts and animal rugs created a unique respite for guests throughout the evening. “Craig was so incredible during this entire process and really wanted to let me and my mom have this experience, so I just wanted to do something special just for him to say thank you,” said Ruth of how she designed this special area to represent his passion for the sport.
W

22
W
There was no detail, big or small that was placed without intention. From the sterling silver goblets to the antler cake server, traditional heirloom pieces played a key role in the bride and groom’s memorable evening. “That was really the most special thing. Other people may have not seen it, but there were so many pieces and details that had deep meaning and represented cherished friends, family and memories,” gushed Ruth. While the immaculate decorations and splendorous venues certainly didn’t hurt in making this event yet another Franklin success, the true beauty lies in the experience behind it all. Because for Ruth and her mother, it was not just a wedding, but a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to leverage their strengths to take a traditional, mother-daughter experience and make it their own. In fact, they even housed a “wedding war room” in the upstairs office of her parent’s home. “It was literally covered wall to wall with everything wedding. My dad knew not to go in,” Ruth laughed.
Eight months of planning may not seem like very much, but for Ruth and her mother, it was just enough time to make up for missed memories and plan one sensational wedding event that would not only remain forever engraved in their two hearts, but most especially in all of the ones present during this evening filled with so much love. “There were times that I would send my mom pictures at all hours of the night, seeking her opinion on cocktail stirrers, different shades of blush and ivory and countless renderings of watercolor monograms,” said Ruth. “Anyone that knows my mom knows she would never have devoted the time and attention to detail for such decisions, but she never failed to respond within minutes, as if she was on call 24/7 for eight months.” As Ruth found herself at the altar, parallel to her future husband and surrounded by dear friends and family, she stood content and in utter awe of how all of these moments had come together to create a memorable journey to the most unbelievable destination.

Project Runway season 5 winner Leanne Marshall designs for the modern bride Written by Caylee Matthews Born in Yuba City, California, Leanne Marshall began her formal foray into fashion at the tender age of 12, debuting costumes she’d designed for ballet and dance performances. Earning a Levi’s Dockers Scholarship helped her earn a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco. After graduation she moved to Portland, Oregon and worked as a graphic designer, and working in her spare time to launch her own label, which became successful enough within a year for her to devote herself to fashion fulltime. In 2008, she scored a coveted spot on season 5 of Project Runway, going on to be named the winner. The notoriety allowed her to relocate to New York City, where she continued to work on her line and show at New York Fashion Week and other highprofile runway events around the globe. Marshall continues to drive the market with incredible designs, especially her bridal collection, which was launched in 2011. For brides-to-be looking for a unique masterpiece on their big day,
Marshall combines sleek silhouettes with the most recent trends in the collection. Pulling from several inspirations throughout her collections, she finds the perfect balance between a simple design with dainty details for women that want a sophisticated yet sleek wedding dress that will showcase, not overshadow their beauty. Many of the gowns from her spring 2018 collection feature rustic-looking guipure laces in feathered and lattice patterns. Highlights among these include the bohemian, Americanainfluenced long-sleeved gowns, a design element drawn from the overwhelming requests she received. This is her first collection to date that doesn’t have a strapless gown. Necklines are raised in the front, while still mostly plunging in the back, with the line’s trademark floating, weightless silk chiffon skirts. The showstoppers of this collection a pair of full A-line silk organza gowns in a gradient blush/violet/ivory print that mimics shades of a glorious sunset developed from Leanne’s signature watercolor artwork. Leanne Marshall gowns are carried at The Bride Room in Nashville (leannemarshall.com).

Julie Vino draws inspiration from Italy for her fall collection Written by Bridget Williams Calling herself “creative and artsy” since childhood, Julie Vino turned to fashion, specifically bridal and evening wear, as the outlet to express her passion for beauty. In 2008, following fashion school and internships in Canada and Israel, she launched her eponymous brand in Jaffa, an ancient port city in Israel. Vino’s figure-forward looks, which run the gamut from trendsetting to timeless, have a strong emphasis on tailoring. She relies on suppliers around the globe: handmade brocade from India, fine lace from France, and embroidery from Italy. She also employs a team of artisans specializing in embroidery to add texture and one-of-akind details to make her dresses even more exquisite. For her fall 2017 collection, Vino drew inspiration from the historic city of Napoli. “The rich Italian references can be seen in every last detail, from semi-sheer layered tulle with hand alençon lace appliques to the intricate crested bodices,” explained the designer. now a stunning hotel that embodies a unique brand of quirky sophistication, as well as a passion for food and exemplary service. Hotel Liberty’s 38 rooms and suites are situated across two buildings dating from the 1840s and joined by a contemporary glass box. Its former incarnation as a jail for the city of Offenburg came to an end in 2009, when it was transformed into the hotel that will be led by general manager Marc Aeberhard and his team as of Autumn 2017. The hotel’s design has been conceptualized to reference the building’s heritage while capturing the zeitgeist of modern-day Baden-Württemberg. The result is warm and welcoming—the latter sentiment reinforced by the hotel’s one-stop butler service— with wide, light-filled corridors, distressed leather furnishings, and 10-meter-high glass façades softening the well-worn stonework. Paying homage to the proud gastronomic roots of the region, the property plays host to the fine dining grill restaurant Wasser&Brot, a reference to the inmates’ typical diet of “water and bread” in previous times. From September, this standout eatery will serve contemporary French cuisine under Michelin-starred chef Jeremy Biasiol. For those looking for lighter fare, the Mezzanine Floor & Lounge offers locally inspired tapas and high tea set to a soundtrack of classical piano music, while the rooftop terrace is perfectly located for sundowners with a view.

SAY “I-DO” TO SOUTHERN SOPHISTICATION
Savor the Luxury Wedding Experience at Mint Springs Farm Written by Alexandra Rhett / Contributed by Lynn Whisenant Born and raised in Huntsville, AL, this southern bred, creative genius and owner of Mint Springs Farm, Lynn Whisenant so beautifully engaged Sophisticated Living with her story and highlighted how she created one of Nashville’s most sought after wedding venues. Lynn’s 35 years of design practice, passion for art, floral ingenuity and an eye for tablescapes are just a few reasons why this luscious piece of heaven is a bride’s dream come true. Mint Springs Farm combines Tennessee’s southern charm with modern amenities, making it the quintessential Nashville style venue for events. Tucked into the corner of Southeast Williamson County, the farm is only minutes from popular locations such as Franklin, Brentwood, and downtown Nashville. The whole team at Mint Springs Farm so beautifully executes and sculpts each event with details that are distinctly about each couple. Their mission statement from the beginning was that every event they designed would begin with each couple. The professional planners approach each couple’s day as a collaboration, built on the story only they could tell. For this reason, no two events at Mint Springs Farm are alike. The team loves the challenge of creating an experience that is captivating and unique. It pushes them to dream big while tailoring the design process to each and every couple.

Now pour a glass of chardonnay, seep into planning mode and allow this wedding connoisseur to immerse you in to the lavish Mint Springs Farm experience. Over the years, I have assisted in the floral and décor of several of my dear friend’s children’s weddings. However, it wasn’t until my close friend, Jan Tucker’s daughter tied the knot that we realized what a void there was in high-end service side of luxury wedding venues. We spent months planning and designing for what was a show-stopping, memorable event for her daughter. However, on the day of the big event, we felt rushed, stressed and totally exhausted by the end of the event. A few years later Jan and I came up with the idea of creating a venue specifically built to cater to the couple, their wedding party and their families where the on-site staff would take care of every little detail. So, being two adventurous women, we took the bull by the horns and did just that; built Mint Springs Farm!

Whether in the bridal suite, the groom’s loft or simply around the property, the day begins at 10:30 in the morning so that our couples, their wedding party and families can spend the day relaxing, preparing, and getting dressed in all one location. The bridal suite and groom’s loft was designed with great care for stress-free preparation, laughing with friends, beautiful picture background and a perfect locale for creating lasting memories on that special day. Mint Springs Farm captures the legendary hospitality of the South. Having a full-time floral and design department on site, not only makes it convenient for our couples, but it also allows us to have total control over the quality of floral at all of the events. All floral is created in our design room, then placed in our floral cooler to keep fresh until time to display.

TRUE COUTURE ENDURES Written by Miriam Tedeschi True couture breaks through the boundaries of design for a meaningful foray into style. The exciting experience in choosing your couture gown with a custom couturier begins with a sketchpad, a measuring tape and a vision. Couturier Karen Hendrix has built her reputation utilizing exquisite methods of time and labor intense techniques while maintaining the highest disciplines of couture. Her designs have passion and take you back to the days of the first couturiers, whose attention to detail and fullness of imagination were unparalleled with luxurious fabrics and a meticulous fit. It all began in the little beach town of San Clemente, California. At the age of 14, Karen started classical training for a career in the opera world, at the encouragement of her mother, a classical vocalist herself. Her Aunt Pearl, a designer of beautiful women’s fashion, inspired Karen to start making her own clothes, but it was her father, a successful entrepreneur, who encouraged her to make her gowns for her performances... And the rest is history. Over the next sixteen years, music would take her to European and Asian countries where her introduction to the Masters of Haute Couture would have a profound effect on her, greatly influencing her creativity in fashion. In the beginning of her career, Karen’s modest budget couldn’t afford her the
78
W
expensive fabrics it took to create the designs she envisioned; which motivated her to experiment with fabrics in unconventional ways. She created techniques, enhancing fabrics by texturizing them through hand crimping, pleating, rouching and swirling fabrics into roses, giving a new life to her couture creations. Karen’s tailoring techniques and designing skills were self-taught and developed from simple silhouettes to her extravagant luxury signature gowns of today. “A famous couturier once said that you never see a true couture gown at first glance. It takes three looks before you actually see the whole gown and all its glorious details. I have never forgotten those words of wisdom. I always strive to get deeper into the details,” said Karen. As quoted by one of her clients in “Enchanted Bride” magazine, “She calmed my every doubt concerning my daunting gown design and she did it with the spirit of a saint...accepting the challenge and fully engaging in the conceptualization of my dream dress. Her talent for design and details are outstanding. She was like my Fairy Godmother.” Ericka Dunlap, Miss America 2004. The nickname stems from Karen ability to create any gown that they dream of. Karen creates a designing experience for her brides similar to the couturiers of Paris. From first sketch to final stitch, a special bond is formed, and every gown is designed with passion from the very heart of this couturier. Some gowns take as long as 80 to 200 hours to create depending on the details. “We not only bring their dream dresses to life but also create a lifelong memory,” said Karen. “I am honored to be a part of their special day, and then to make their dream dresses as well... It doesn’t get any better than that.” Couture designs include evening gowns, celebration gowns for mothers and flowergirls, available at Karen Hendrix Atelier in the Historic St. Bernards Academy Building located in the Vanderbilt/ Hillsboro Village area.

My journey began when, at only 20 years old, I took a huge leap of faith, leaving my entire family behind in Ukraine and followed my dreams by moving to America. My bilingual tongue, four languages to be exact, helped me navigate through what I quickly discovered to be a very diverse population. Fast forward 10 years, I’ve since completed my Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from Vanderbilt University and feel privileged to now have a career that I love, working at Vanderbilt as a registered Dietitian. But it was along the way that I found true love in who is now my husband. After attending one of the shows during Nashville Fashion Week, my three best friends and I ventured over to Moto, a chic Italian restaurant on M Street. Not long after we sat down, the waiter brought four sangria cocktails to our table, informing us that they were compliments of the three men at the table by the window. My girlfriends and I raised our glasses up to show them our appreciation and they did the same. A few moments later, a Magnum bottle of Millecento red wine arrived at the table in the hands of a handsome man. His strong, playful voice said, “would you like to try?” I looked up to find a very well dressed gentleman that had a pleasant, perfumed smell. That night, he took my

hand and I never looked back. John and I talked and danced the night away and never in a million years would I ever know the significance of the origin of this wine as a part of our love story. During the first few weeks of knowing each other, we discovered our similar passion for travel, world cuisine, good wine, life views and what we yearned for in a partner. I realized I had found my best friend and the love of my life in one person. I fell in love with John after only a few dates, but I knew he was my soulmate after our first trip to Italy a few months after we met. And soon after, without any hesitation or delay, John brought me into another level of his life, the world of aviation. John is the owner and CEO of SecureAir Charter, where he has a fleet consisting of 9 Jet aircrafts. As a pilot of 28 years, his passion, dedication and enthusiasm for aviation were so contagious that I fell in love with it too. As a couple, we decided that I, too, would become a commercial pilot so that we could fly and spend more time together. For John, the ability to make a career out of a passion is one of the greatest gifts. He has built his success through creating incredible and unique journeys for his clients as he not only maintains the utmost of professionalism but exudes his heart and soul.

Alongside our love for flight, it became a tradition for John to create special trips for us throughout the year to celebrate milestones. For our first Valentine’s Day together, we flew to Paris and spent the evening under the Eiffel Tower. We spent our one-year anniversary in Ancient Rome, and often celebrate birthdays on random adventures from Disney World to the Alps. But despite our worldly desires, we always find ourselves drawn back to Italy. Since John grew up in a small town outside of Naples, and I am drawn to the European culture, as it reminds me of Ukraine, we have a special place in our heart for this beautiful country. Being close friends of the Ferragamo family and having a lifetime membership at their Tuscan Vineyard Resort Casteglion del Bosco, we find ourselves spending multiple months a year basking in this serene countryside. It is practically our second home. John proposed to me in the Bahamas during a romantic, midnight walk on the beach. It was a moment I’ll never forget.

In the months that followed that magical moment, we had so much fun planning what would soon be our magnificent Tuscan wedding. We wanted our guests, who would travel near and far, to witness a real Italian wedding. So when it came time to select a venue, the Casteglion del Bosco Vineyard seemed to be the obvious choice. It had history, beauty, rustic elegance, Tuscan views, acres of grapevines and of course, access to the best wines in Italy. But it wasn’t just the wine. The food at our wedding was one aspect that John and I were most excited about. John and I travel thousands of miles to experience new food, delicacies, restaurants and culture. Our dinners can last for up to three hours and we undeniably enjoy every second. Not only do we appreciate and visit many Michelin rated restaurants around the world, but we also love to stumble across small local Italian cafe’s that leave our taste buds in a complete wow. Needless to say, we wanted to make sure our guests experienced the best food that Italy had to offer.

We welcomed our guests to join us on our journey by presenting them with a passport and boarding ticket as a wedding invitation. We tied the knot in front of the 800-year-old castle ruins that is located on the top of the hill overlooking Tuscan valleys and the very famous town of Montalcino. To add to the romantic sentiment, the Castiglion del Bosco wine that featured ruins of castle on its label that was gifted to me that night at Moto was the same castle in front of which we got married. Our wedding was a three-day celebration. On the first day when all our guests arrived, we started out with a pizza party that was a huge success. Our guests tasted homemade mozzarella, fragrant vegetable salad from the garden just outside of the restaurant, black truffle pizzas, and of course several wines from the Casteglion del Bosco property. The next evening held our rehearsal dinner where all of the guests were invited to the Members Only Wine Cellar that featured half round tables decorated with hundreds of
candles. In true Italian family style, dinner would not have been completed without black truffle risotto, quail in balsamic vinegar, grass fed beef filets in Brunello reduction and red berries soup with yogurt pudding. The following day, our reception was set up in the backyard next to the infinity pool of our Tuscan villa. There were multiple grills set up outside where chef ’s grilled organic vegetables, wild caught fish selection like Dover Sole, Cod, Red Snapper and king prawns. For our meat lovers, we opt for grass fed pork loin, filet mignon, delicate pork ribs, rabbit and wild boar. Our guests were presented with a great selection, impeccable service and mouthwatering dishes. The highlight of the night was our three tier, traditional Italian wedding cake, Millefoglie. After a dreamy ceremony, hours of dancing and dedicate dining, our magical wedding came to a close. I will forever cherish the pre-wedding planning just as much as our ‘day-of ’ memories. I feel incredibly blessed and grateful that I took a leap of faith, came across an ocean, and began my forever.

KNOT MISSING A DETAIL Premier W.E.D. {Wedding & Event Design}
Written by Paige Atwell / Photography by Kristin Vanzant and Nyk +Cali Dawn Schenkel, owner of Premier W.E.D., exudes passion and dimension when creating each and every event for her clients. She delivers curated, unique and glamorous events that showcase each client beautifully. When you walk in to a Premier W.E.D. event, it is evident that it will be an affair you won’t soon forget. Actively engaging all of your design senses, Dawn’s personal touch focuses on small details that encompass her client’s style, passions and interests. In fact, this event connoisseur and her team are well known for their impeccable design skills, personalization and client services. “Service is important to me. I’m always just so grateful my client’s trusted and believed in my company to handle something so important and pivotal in their life,” said Schenkel. “I take this job very personally. It’s my heart, soul, and literally blood, sweat and tears! I want to make sure all is perfect but I cannot be in four places at one time. It’s why my team is superb. They are rock stars who have trained intensively underneath me.”

In 1999, Schenkel had just begun to conceptualize her company in Nashville and start her business plan. Taking a tremendous leap of faith, she resigned from her position at the YMCA of Middle TN and dove head first into the event planning industry. As fait would have it, her timing couldn’t have been more perfect. “I happen to leave at the time a large event I typically planned for them was coming to fruition. The YMCA ended up being my first client and hired Premier W.E.D. to oversee and produce that event for them,” said Schenkel. “It was the perfect start for me and a bittersweet ending with the Y.” Running her own business, Schenkel quickly realized that event planning and design were beginning to evolve in to far more than a church with “punch, cake and nuts.” Unlike today, there were no websites, apps or plethora of publications to turn to for inspiration. “I would go to book stores and skim through books about all types of lifestyle topics and design,” said Schenkel. “Whether it was architectural books, food inspirations, luxury travel or my grandmother’s china set, I used it to inspire me. It was my “Pinterest” I guess you could say?” While she certainly didn’t lack in talent, Schenkel knew she had to find a way to put her business out there. “Companies didn’t have websites then but I wanted to make sure that we did,” said Schenkel. “To me, it would have been like an artist not having a place to share or sell their work if we didn’t have a website. I also had to rely on good ole fashion personal creativity.”

Watching the industry and her own business flourish rapidly, it didn’t take her long to realize how vital it was as a planner to align with the right vendors. “Something I say often and live by is that I am only as good as those I surround myself with,” said Schenkel. “The vendors that take good care of Premier W.E.D then in turn take great care of the client.” Trying to attract the proper cliental for the company was difficult at first, as there weren’t comparisons in the industry to know what would work and what wouldn’t. “I did wedding shows but I learned quickly that it is not who I am, my business is personal and more luxury driven,” said Schenkel. “I focused on my website, and community connections and I grew little by little by little.” And grow it did. Today, Premier W.E.D. produces all types of events in the Southeast and Chicago, where Dawn opened a satellite office 3 years ago. What makes this company truly unique is that it is not just about weddings. In fact, they’ve produced events of all types for their elite clientele, including birthdays, large corporate functions, baby showers, surprise parties and even gender reveal parties, all holding the same, luxury standard. “I wanted to do a sit down dinner in my backyard for my 50th birthday. I met with Dawn and was so impressed with her on so many levels,” said Sandy Knox, Premier W.E.D client. “I think the fact that Dawn truly listens to you is a major contribution to her success. She does not miss one detail. Her team was amazing in that they all worked like a fine tuned machine. I can honestly say that not one thing went wrong. Everything was amazing. My friends still talk about the party.”

Taking the thoughts, passions and ideas from clients and turning them into a reality takes a talent that Schenkel has mastered over the last 16 years. Her ability to communicate with a client, translate who they are, and then create an experience that represents all of the above is a service that simply cannot be matched. After all, there is a reason she has been called the “Houdini” of parties. Her patient but vibrant personality is what allows her to so gracefully handle all of the chaos leading up to a large event. She is strong and calming all in the same breath. And the best part? Today, she is more passionate than ever. “The fact that I get the privilege of meeting people who are totally in love, excited about their future and trusting me to create a day for them that showcases who they are as a couple is the biggest blessing,” said Schenkel. “I mean, how many people can say that is their job? No matter what type of event I’m hired for, it’s still humbling and exciting for me even after all these years!” Premier W.E.D. info@premierwed.com | 615.332.0592 | www.premierwed.com
