Lundy’s. Rising to the occasion.
At your wedding, make sure “something blue” isn’t you. A year from now, your guests may not remember the delicately crisp texture of the Pistachio Encrusted Sea Bass. They may never recount the dramatic artistry of the sizzling flambé or swoon over its subtle layers of exquisite flavor. Nor are they likely to remember the elegance of the fine linen lining the carefully set tables. What they will remember, however, is the magic. They will remember the enchanted feeling of being surrounded by friends and family in a setting as beautiful as the love they share. They will remember that on your wedding day, everything was perfect. boutique catering | event design | couture linens and rental | 859.255.0717 | lundyscatering.com

From the Editor-In-Chief My husband and I will celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary in June. While I don’t feel much older than the 22-year-old blushing bride I was way back then, when I look at the babyface smiling back at me in photos from that day, I’m left wondering how time flew by so quickly! Although I have no recollection of this, my mother insists that during the initial stages of planning, I threw out ideas both sane and irrational that included, among others, a small affair that involved my getting married barefoot in a field with a bouquet of just-picked wildflowers. In the end - with more than a little maternal nudging - we went the traditional route with a church ceremony. I did end up wearing shoes with my Cinderella-style gown and “blusher” veil (although someone had to remind me just before I walked down the aisle to take off my grungy running stopwatch!). As nearly every bride will attest, their wedding day comes and goes in the blink of an eye, making it vital to select a good photographer to help preserve memories for posterity. I’ve always disliked being photographed, so my husband and I opted for a photojournalistic style full of candid portraits that really captured the essence of our wedding. For instance, I danced so enthusiastically with friends and family throughout the reception that the photos chronicle the gradual demise of my carefully sculpted updo as it unraveled into long blonde waves. My favorite picture is the own shown, which perfectly encapsulates the fact that neither of us take ourselves too seriously. It’s in this same vein that this issue of Sophisticated Living Weddings showcases truly outstanding photographers with an array of real weddings from around the globe. From a castle in Sweden to a family farm, these stunning photographs capture the special bond of each couple and the uniqueness of their wedding. You’ll also want to check out our recommendations for picture-perfect honeymoons and destination weddings. Would the person I am today have chosen the same wedding as the me of yesterday? Likely not, as my worldview is quite different than it was 15 years ago. Still, if I could go back in time I wouldn’t change a thing as all of the smiling faces in our photographs attest.
Julie Thacker of Julie Thacker Photography (juliethackerphotography.com) was the photographer who captured the darling image of the bride and her dog on page 66 of the fall/winter issue.

Cory and Lisa Written by Lisa Mullins Cory and I have been dating over five years and got engaged Christmas morning 2010. We both have always shared a passion for the outdoors, especially the water and boating. We’ve taken a trip to Mexico each year since we started dating and decided it was the perfect spot to have our wedding since it is so special to us. We held our wedding on the beach in Cancun, Mexico surrounded by 30 of our closest friends and family. Our destination was the El Presidente Intercontinental Resort. We chose a sunset ceremony followed by a champagne toast with our guests to finish watching the sun set at the edge of the water. It was the best sunset we’ve had since we’ve been going to Mexico! There were several sailboats that had pulled up to watch the ceremony and it made for a spectacular backdrop. We continued the reception near the beach and moved on to cocktails and seviche (one of my favorite foods) before having a candlelight dinner and dancing. The sparkle of moonlight on the water was equally as beautiful as the sunset. It was an amazing day!

Drayton Hall
Rich in history and known for its charming inns and seaside beauty by leisure travelers, Charleston, S.C., is quickly becoming a popular wedding destination for the betrothed. Couples note the destination’s historic and oceanfront venues, Southern traditions, gracious hospitality and rich Lowcountry cuisine among the top reasons why the Charleston area is an ideal location to say “I do.” Offering dozens of wedding venues ranging from sprawling plantations to seaside settings to opulent gardens, the Charleston area enables couples to choose a bridal location that reflects their personal style and the destination’s rich history.

The storied Legare Waring House unites both a flare for the dramatic and classic Southern style with its grand entryway flanked by moss-draped oak trees and lavish furnishings. The William Aiken House, a National Historic Landmark featuring original 1810 design, is an ideal choice for traditionally-minded couples, complete with classically furnished interiors, as well as a 200-year-old magnolia tree and picturesque reflecting pond. One of Charleston’s famed plantations, Drayton Hall, is another popular wedding venue featuring stunning outdoor vistas including a Victorian reflecting pond surrounded by 630 acres, while the Charleston Tea Plantation is favored for its rows of
picturesque tea bushes bordered by live oaks (the oldest of which has been dubbed the “wedding tree”). Large celebrations can be elegantly accommodated at Charleston Place Hotel (charlestonplace.com), enviably located within walking distance of an amazing array of dining, shopping and recreation amenities. With over 40,000 squarefeet of event space, on staff wedding coordinators can plan a fete for 1,500 in the 14,000 square foot grand ballroom to 300 in the Riviera, which has been renovated to its 1939 Art Deco style, including restored frescos and hand-painted murals. The wedding party and guests will enjoy a host of luxury amenities
at Charleston Place, including a rooftop pool and fitness center, Spa at Charleston Place (voted #8 best spa in North America by Condé Nast Traveler), and the innovative cuisine of Chef Michelle Weaver at the Charleston Grill, one of Charleston’s most heralded dining destinations. The destination’s array of bridal pur veyors helps couples incorporate Southern traditions and individualize each reception. Charleston area event professionals go above and beyond, finding seasonal apparel for a bride or groom, customized wedding accoutrements and creatively incorporating local elements like magnolia leaves or palmetto

fronds. For a traditional Charleston wedding gift, local institution Croghan’s Jewel Box provides a diverse collection of fine antique jewelry and silver rice spoons — a vestige of the plantation age — for weddings guests to peruse. When it comes to destination weddings, couples like to select menus that are reflective of the local fare. The Lowcountry is brimming with authentic dining experiences, from shrimp and grits to she crab soup, as well as modern derivatives of time-honored recipes. In line with current wedding trends – with many couples opting for more casual passed hors d’oeurves over a formal sit-down dinner – the Charleston area rises to the occasion. Recent trends include gourmet Southern-style comfort foods, such as barbecue and collard green-wrapped bacon scallops for hors d’oeuvres. Recently wed couples have even been known to add playful “Make Your Own Grits” parfait stations, where wedding guests can add zing to their grits with delicious cheese, fried onions, bacon crumbles,
scallions and more. Local beverages are also a hit, including Charleston’s own Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, which can be served over ice in mason jars with a sprig of mint. To appease those with a sweet tooth, another Lowcountry classic is the benne wafer – a thin, crispy, buttery cookie made with toasted sesame seeds. The recipe dates back to plantation days, and the seeds are reputed to bring good luck. As with all destination weddings, couples want to be sure their guests have plenty to do and see while in town. The Charleston area boasts scores of historic sights, special events and miles of beaches. Best of all, it is easy to navigate by foot. The destination is also conveniently located no more than a fivehour drive from most metropolitan areas in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions and is serviced by non-stop flights from 10 U.S. cities. A complete listing of Charleston area wedding purveyors, venues and more can be found at charlestonweddingguide.com. W

Ramy and Frida Photography by David Blair Ramy and Frida’s stylish destination wedding took place at a seaside castle in the Swedish countryside (this same castle was chosen as the backdrop for the new the sci-fi movie Melancholia staring Kirsten Dunst and Kiefer Sutherland). It was truly an international wedding with many guests from around the world. The ceremony took place in an old stone church and was followed quickly by a cocktail hour just outside the castle. The stunning view from the courtyard of the ocean and outlying islands made an exceptional background for this elegant celebration. The lavish candlelight dinner was served in a grand ballroom lined with massive paintings and intricate woodworking. The day was filled with excitement and tears of joy and the festivities lasted long into the night.

Ashley and Mike Written by Sally Foster & Candace Bramley of Urbaniste Photography by Matt Malicotte
Southern Equine Elegance. That is how you can sum up the very personalized wedding of Ashley and Mike. Working with them was a true pleasure. They were intricately involved in each detail, making sure their personal touch was evident. The ceremony and reception venues were chosen for their significance to the couple. Jean Farris winery served as the ceremony site. Ashley and Mike are frequent patrons of the winery and bistro and are even featured in recent advertisements for Jean Farris. An equine arena on Grimes Mill Farm, just down the road from the winery, served as the location for the reception. Mike helps manage the horse farm and both Ashley and Mike have spent countless hours on the property together. I remember touring the arena when I was first brought on as their planner. They had a very specific vision for transforming the space. When you compare before and after photographs, it is hard to believe it is the same location. Their love of horses and sophistication were subtly weaved throughout the design elements of the day. Everything from their save-the date cards, wedding day signage, and ceremony and reception decor reflected a rustic elegance. The equine theme was further incorporated with the programs, table numbers, and favors. Each place setting included a horseshoe bearing a message regarding their favor -- a donation to an equine charity. As much as the meaningful venues and thoughtful design elements helped make their wedding unique, perhaps the most special quality was their dedication to each other. This was evident in the way they collaborated to make their dream wedding a reality. Mike could be found hanging fabric from the tall ceilings in the arena the week before the wedding while Ashley scheduled a couples massage to help them transition from busy preparations to a relaxed celebration. They have much to celebrate as they start their new life together. Shelia and Craig Photography by Todd Pellowe helia Bayes and Craig Robertson were married October 30, 2010 in Lexington, KY. Their wedding was steeped in history and ambiance, as the ceremony was held in historic Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington. Shelia wore a white Royal Duchess Satin Amsale gown, with a one-shoulder trumpet silhouette with an asymmetrical bow treatment. Bridesmaids wore coordinating one-shoulder eggplant gowns with custom Amethyst and South Sea Pearl earrings and bracelets created by Shelia Bayes Fine Jewelers. Grooms wore traditional black. Following the ceremony they celebrated along with 600 guests at the grand Spindletop Hall, an elegant venue perfectly suited for a buffet dinner in the mansion, and a BIG Party on the lawn in garden party style. Guests were greeted by jazz saxophonist Dan Jackson upon entering the mansion. The candlelit garden party decor focused on comfort and simplicity, with tables draped in rough-cut burlap over floor-length cream tablecloths, each adorned with natural cream and white florals and abundant greenery. The party tent featured massive floral urns, live potted trees and tent poles wrapped in moss and puddled burlap. Lighting was by candlelight and lanterns throughout the venue. Artfully adorned with waved fondant, the five-layer champagne cake with raspberry filling was displayed on a bed of moss and hydrangeas. It was important to Shelia that the menu be as unfussy as the decor, and she treated her guests to traditional Kentucky comfort fare with an elegant twist. Tomato bisque shooters with mini grilled cheese and mini hot browns preceded a dinner of fried chicken with country gravy, fresh green beans, shrimp and grits, light yeast rolls and a sumptuous mashed potato bar. Equally important to the couple was that the reception venue was able to accommodate a big crowd, a great band (Burning Las Vegas), and lots of room for dancing into the wee hours. At midnight, guests were served a snack course of sliders and milk shakes, after which karaoke kept the evening going until 3 am.

Alana and Brandon Written by Alana Qualls Photography by Chad Henle of Henle Photography Brandon and I met when we both worked night shifts at United Parcel Service (UPS). I was a quality trainer for the company at that time, and I was training another person that happened to be stationed right across from Brandon. We smiled at each other several times, but he never worked up the nerve to say anything to me except, “Do you know what time it is?” One day as I was leaving work, I saw Brandon (I didn’t know his name at this time) standing outside of the UPS building looking lost and as if he was waiting for someone. Seeing my golden opportunity, I walked up to him and asked him if he needed a ride. He said “yes” and I told him it was on my way, but really it wasn’t on my way...in fact, it was 40 minutes OUT of my way! But thinking about spending all that alone time in a car with him made it seem ok to me. I really wanted to get to know this handsome stranger, and on the ride to his home I told him, “you should ask me out on a date sometime”. I have no idea where I got all that boldness, but I just wanted him to know I was interested, that way he would feel confident enough to talk to me and stop asking me what time it was. A couple of weeks went by, and I finally got a date invite from Brandon. The rest is history. There are many times when I think to myself, what if I never offered Brandon a ride home that day?
