From the Publisher
When I sailed into New York Harbor after my first voyage down the Long Island Sound, I remember saying, “The last time a Kaminer passed the Statue of Liberty on a boat was on the way to Ellis Island.” While I was trying to be funny, I also think deep down I sensed the enormity of the moment– how far our family traveled for the promise of a better life. It certainly was not lost on me enjoying a day on the water. So when we had the chance to do a story about a yacht docked in New York Harbor, with St. Louis connections, I couldn’t wait to publish the feature (page 14). I was drawn to the story the same way I am drawn (again and again) to the sea. From the sheer beauty of the interiors (designed by St. Louis’ Castle Design) to the breathtaking views of Lady Liberty and the Financial District in the background, this yacht is a floating Fifth Avenue apartment (minus Central Park). We can’t wait to see where we find it next, and we hope you like it as much as we do. What started as a summer camp experience on a Sunfish has led me to a lifelong adventure catching the wind, discovering new places, enjoying sunrises and sunsets, entertaining friends, attending boat shows and meeting other passionate boaters. Surprisingly, my co-captain (my wife, Debbie) and I have met many St. Louisans along the way who are also drawn to the sea and a floating lifestyle. There are hundreds of boats, many quite large, owned by St. Louisans far from the native shores of the Mississippi or the Lake of the Ozarks. From world-class racing sailboats to luxury superyachts, you’d be surprised how many times I see St. Louisans at the helm enjoying a nautical life, which is admittedly limited in our beloved city. But we are out there in numbers. And to those who often ask us about the motion sickness, there’s a patch for that! Beyond boating, we have seen many friends this summer who have, or are renting, homes in The Hamptons, Nantucket, Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, Kennebunkport, Los Cabos or the Bahamas. If you’re like me, whenever I travel, it seems I always see someone from St. Louis, someone who grew up here, or has family here, or went to school here or asks me if I know a certain someone (who I often do). St. Louis is not an island. As the summer comes to a close and we celebrate the continuation of the Charity Polo season, the new arts seasons, and our highly anticipated Sophisticated Giving issue, we also dream of traveling to our favorite hot spots this winter, walking on great beaches, chartering yachts, and simply gathering with our St. Louis family and friends wherever the wind takes us. Get out on the water, spread our love of St. Louis, fly your Stanley Cup Championship flag, and explore. Life is good.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will make its maiden voyage in February 2020.
VOYAGES TO STIR THE SENSES Written By Carrie Edelstein / Photos Courtesy Of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
If there were a bigger term than “Bon Voyage,” it would be required to say to a passenger embarking on what could become the most coveted experience at sea. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will make its maiden voyage in the Caribbean in February. The maiden voyage will take passengers from Fort Lauderdale to Barbados, with other itineraries including destinations like Bimini in the Bahamas, Cartagena in Colombia and the Grenadines. Later in 2020, options include the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Canada and Northeastern United States. Yet it’s what will be aboard the yacht that will offer the pinnacle of luxurious travel. Designed with the sleek and contemporary look of The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Sunny Isles, Miami Beach and Los Angeles, passengers will find a spacious setting, innovative marine qualities and some of the most design-forward yacht interiors in the world. The customized vessels will measure more than 600 feet long, accommodating up to 298 passengers, and featuring 149 suites, each with its own private terrace and personal concierge. Additionally, there are two owner’s suites, each with a private whirlpool. The yacht’s signature restaurant, Aqua, is designed by Michelin-starred chef Sven Elverfeld. With nearly one crew member for every guest, every need will be met from a fresh cocktail at sunset to signature spa services. Bespoke exursions at port are offered through The Shore Collection. And in true yacht 12 slmag.net
form, there is direct access to the ocean while aboard the boat, with a marina-style platform that allows for watersports. “As the first luxury hotel company to bring the legendary service and ambience of its resorts to sea, we are thrilled to offer guests a new way to create memories with The Ritz-Carlton,” says Lisa Holladay, Global Brand Leader for The Ritz-Carlton. “From the yacht’s design, to programming onboard and ashore, every aspect of the voyage has been carefully created to embody the signature service and casual luxury of a Ritz-Carlton resort.” Designed with a yachting lifestyle of casual freedom in mind, the first of three custom yachts in The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will stop at both signature and iconic destinations. Its intimate size allows for the vessels to sail into coveted city harbors around the world, and the relaxed pace of the yachts offers both daytime and overnight ports of call, giving guests more flexibility for their time on land. Guests can even book back-to-back voyages without repeating ports, allowing them to explore a wider range of destinations and delve into the local culture at each port. A christening celebration in May will take passengers on the inaugural voyage to the Monaco Grand Prix, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Greek Isles, the Balearic Islands and the French Riviera. As if that’s not enticing enough, the yachts of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection are also available for private charter. sl
Each yacht will offer signature spa services aboard the vessel.

“We took everything from dark to light,” explains Castle. “Everything was cream or beige and browns and we took it to white and fresh and crisp.”
ABOARD AND BEYOND
Written By Carrie Edelstein/ Photography By Alise O’Brien Something Emily Castle of Castle Design had never done before turned into “the most fun project” she’s ever completed. After being referred to a client through a contractor who was working on a flooded lake house near St. Louis, Castle was then asked to help with another potential project. “The homeowner had been browsing through pictures of yachts for sale online and asked for my opinion on what it would take to bring some of them up to the standards of today,” Castle explains. “The client never wanted to take the woodwork out of the yacht but more wondered what would need to be removed to make it look fresh.” A few weeks later, Castle was in Florida at a boat show, looking at the yacht being considered. She mingled and made the smart move to reach out to potential vendors should the purchase be made, also noting what would need to be updated, despite the boat being less than a decade old. “The boat was dated even when it was new nine years ago. There was gold, dark wood, dark countertops, lots of brocade fabrics, nothing looked fresh or ocean-y,” Castle recalls. Sure enough, the purchase was made, and the client only gave her one challenge: have the boat ready for the water by summertime. That was just four months to get what Castle said was a seven-month project completed. Yet the only challenge Castle admits to was one a designer might not expect. slmag.net
15
“Because the yacht is 116 feet long, weight was not as big of an issue as it would be on a smaller boat, but we did consider the weight when selecting new countertops, says Castle.
16 slmag.net
Castle traveled to inspect the yacht prior to her client’s purchase to ensure the original wood work of the yacht did not need to be replaced or refurbished.
“You had to get the nomenclature down. You’re talking about heads and galleys and starboard and port in order to be respected by the boat captain,” says Castle. The boat’s captain at the time was the one helping manage the daily operations of the project. “We did new flooring, a new headliner which is the ceiling, we changed out the lighting to LED, we have all new furniture on the boat, all the cushions were new on the exterior. We have a new custom dining table that’s glass that’s attached to the floor in there. The lighting was very ornate and gold,” Castle describes of the project. The yacht is 116 feet, with four suites–each with its own bathroom, plus a powder room, crew quarters, a dining room, galley/kitchen as well as the outdoor living space. With the need for new plumbing, new appliances, new fabrics, new countertops and furniture, some local help came as a bit of relief.
“A yacht is considered outside, so not all plumbing is guaranteed to be used outside. We actually ordered plumbing from Immerse here in St. Louis that was rated for outdoor use, but still gorgeous to use on the yacht,” explains Castle. Anne Kelleher had worked on a couple of yacht projects prior to receiving a call from Castle. Kelleher says “Yachts should be approached very differently than land-based residences. THG was chosen for its solid reputation for understanding the intricacies of nautical spaces.” Kelleher worked closely with Castle to find products that would be both stylish and functional. All the fabrics that were used were specifically for outdoor use, and specifically brands commonly used on outdoor yachts. Castle picked that tip up from the vendors she first met at the Florida boat show. With a tight timeline, she knew again it would be her hometown connections that would help get the job done. slmag.net

Marine grade fabrics were installed to sustain the elements of the ocean while providing an updated look onboard the yacht.

Each suite has its own bathroom/head, for a total of four baths plus a powder room onboard the boat.
“KDR Designer Showrooms is known throughout the design industry for providing outstanding service to our design partners. In the sub-markets we serve such as marine/ boating and private aviation, time is of the essence,” says Kevin Kenney, President and CEO of KDR Designer Showrooms. “Our outstanding vendor relationships allow us to execute in procuring these high-end custom interior products in an expedited manner. The reward is that our customers can rely on us before, during and after completion and allows us to take great pride in the finished project such as this exceptional yacht designed by Emily Castle and her team.” Perhaps the biggest surprise package was for Tom Theiss of Theiss Plating, when he received all of the boat’s hardware. Castle says, “We replated all of the hardware that was gold
on the boat to polished nickel.” Believe it or not, shipping everything to St. Louis and back beat a local price in West Palm Beach, Florida. “This was a very special project for us as it’s not very often that we get to work on a yacht as amazing as this one,” says Theiss. “We took over 25 doors of solid Brass door hardware, over 150 ceiling light bezels and dozens of miscellaneous hardware items and turned them from Brass to Chrome. It was a true pleasure to work with Emily and her staff.” There’s a famous boating quote that says, “Having a yacht is a reason for being more cheerful than most.” For Castle, having designed this particular yacht certainly brought a lot of cheer into her world, which previously had only involved land-based design. She says she’s ready for the next one! sl slmag.net

SOPHISTICATED HOMECOMING HAIR
Photography By Stephanie Cotta / Written By Carrie Edelstein / Makeup And Hair By Dominic Michael Salon
In the spirit of Homecoming season this fall, we asked teenagers from five different high schools if they would like to have their hair and makeup done at Dominic Michael Salon for a trial run. The girls were giddy when they showed up at the Ladue location, ready to see what they would look like after a consultation and then time in the styling chairs. “For occasion hair for high school girls they typically have lots of ideas because they peruse the internet and see plenty of selfies and they know how they will look with different types of effects,” says owner Dominic Bertani. For the ones who tend to be a bit on the quiet side about what they want, Dominic says the standard consultation each stylist does before starting a new look is essential. “We ask the same questions: ‘Do you want your hair up or down? Would you like it smooth or would you like it curly?’ Just to get a rough idea and some parameters,” he adds. 22 slmag.net
The girls came in with dry hair; they didn’t begin with a blowout in the salon. “We recommend that they come in with freshly dried shampooed hair,” says Dominic. “Because most of these girls have long hair, it shortens their visit by about 30 minutes. Typically on a special occasion day they’re looking to get their hair done and move on with other parts of their day and other prep.” Some of the styles were embellished with dry shampoos, giving the hair a little texture and body, which helps the style hold up better. Dominic says long, loose hair is the most requested look for many teenagers right now. He says braids are also popular because “they are a great way to secure that the hair stays positioned throughout an evening of dancing.” sl Dominic Michael Salon has two locations: one in Ladue and one in Chesterfield. Call 314.721.4230 or 636.449.1583 to schedule a consultation or appointment.

SOPHISTICAT D P TS Written by Carrie Edelstein / Photography By Colin Miller of Strauss Peyton
While the pet or pets of the house might fill camera rolls and social media feeds, it’s likely only a one-time occurrence that he or she might appear in a full family portrait. Our “repawters” decided to put Strauss Peyton to the test to see if owner Colin Miller could capture their essence, rather than their poor behavior, in a photo. Although Tanner avoided the streams in the Strauss Peyton shooting gardens, he presented other challenges, like his inability to sit still without his mom nearby, his need to try to catch the flash, and his big demands to sniff every inch of the photography grounds. Rory was a bit better behaved, but refused to pose with ears up and alert. After settling into a prim and proper position that was suitable to Rory’s mom, Colin did quickly snap the duo at their best.* Of course neither Tanner nor Rory would admit it, but it is much easier to include the family pet or pets in a portrait when the humans are able to help or hold the animal. So if you’re considering an attempt at that full-family image, here is some advice from the professionals! T&R: What are the top three recommendations when pets are involved in a portrait shooting? Colin: 1. Bring a collar and a leash for the safety of the dog. If your dog is used to wearing accessories such as a tie or bandana then feel free to include these. However, this is not the time to try something new with your pet. 2. If they know basic commands like sit it will make the process easier. 3. Don’t stress! We know what we are doing and will get the perfect image of your family and your pet. Actually, most families are more relaxed with a pet in the portrait and the kids love it. Our goal is to make the family portrait experience easy for everyone – including Fido! 26 slmag.net
T&R: What are some of the biggest challenges when working with pets? Colin: The family has to stay focused. We tell everyone before the sitting that we will be making funny noises (Colin’s “bark” will make humans wonder if another dog is joining the shoot) and using squeakers cut out of pet toys to get the dog’s attention. It’s important for the family members to stay looking at the camera and not look at what the dog is doing. T&R: What are some tips to help make your pet camera ready? Colin: Have them groomed no earlier than a week before the sitting. We want them to still look clean and fresh for the sitting. Feel free to bring your dog’s favorite treats to help them focus. We also have treats at the studio but most of the time treats aren’t needed. T&R: What if the pet won’t cooperate (asking for a friend)? Colin: We are usually able to get the pets to cooperate. All we really need is one great image of your pet in each location for the final portrait. If the dog is a challenge, we will work with them as much as we can and then hand them off to one of our assistants or tie their leash to a tree in the gardens while the family finishes the sitting. We have had a couple of dogs take a dive into our pond. We have plenty of towels on hand just in case this happens but if the dog is not cooperating (or dripping wet) we can continue with the rest of the family. We are great at getting the perfect image quickly so usually this is not an issue. * In order to authentically report this story, we must note Tanner would not cooperate without his leash, which was edited out of the final picture. And despite the duo being almost friends, they would not pose together for this particular shoot, so their separate shots were also edited to make it appear as if they are picture perfect, together. sl
Looks can be deceiving! Moments before this perfect shot was captured, the family’s Great Dane jumped into the pool to catch an Elmo puppet Colin accidentally lost control over when he was tossing it in the air for the shoot. “This is new for your pet and sometimes they can be stressed by the unfamiliar surroundings,” says Colin. “Bring your patience. We always get the image we need but it sometimes takes a little time for your pet to warm up.”

MID-ENGINE, HIGH EXPECTATIONS
The 2020 C8 Stingray is Chevrolet's first-ever production mid-engine Corvette Written by Andre James / Photos courtesy of Chevrolet Explaining that the traditional front-engine configuration had reached its performance limits, GM President Mark Ruess, said that the iconic Corvette was due for a new layout. “In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history.” In addition to adding a futuristic dimension to the classic corvette silhouette, the mid-engine layout provides for better weight distribution, as well as improved responsiveness credited to driver positioning closer to the front axle. The new Corvette also boasts excellent forward sightlines, due to a lower positioning of the hood, instrument panel, and steering wheel. “As America’s most iconic performance nameplate, redesigning the Corvette Stingray from the ground up presented the team a historic opportunity, something Chevrolet designers have desired for over 60 years,” said Michael Simcoe, vice president of Global Design, General Motors. Like a gem on display in a glass case, the 6.2L Small Block V-8 LT2 engine— the only naturally aspirated V-8 in the segment —is
visible through the large rear hatch window. Every one of the engine components, all the way down to the bolts, were built with aesthetics in mind. Seven air vents accentuate this focal point. The V-8 LT2 engine produces 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when equipped with performance exhaust — the most horsepower and torque of any entry-level Corvette. When equipped with the Z51 Performance Package, it has the fastest 0-60 time of any Corvette ever. This power, paired with Chevrolet’s first eight-speed dualclutch transmission, translates to lightning-fast shifts and excellent power transfer. While a manual transmission option was left out of the redesign, paddle shifters allow drivers to choose a specific gear. “The performance shift algorithms are so driver-focused, they can sense when you’re doing spirited driving — regardless of driving mode — and will hold lower gears longer for more throttle response,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer. slmag.net

In addition to the familiar Weather, Tour, Sport, and Track driver mode choices, two new modes have been added. MyMode is a configurable setting for a preferred driving style that can remain between key cycles. Z mode, which is activated through a “Z” button on the steering wheel, is a single-use mode that takes MyMode configurations one step further, allowing drivers to adjust the engine and transmission. With an exterior design that draws cues from modern fighter jets and Formula One racing, the canopy-forward stance boasts a commanding presence with aggressive front fenders, low profile headlamps and uninterrupted body contour lines courtesy of completely hidden door, hood and hatch releases. Dual trunks offer a combined 12.6 cubic feet of storage space Inside the aeronautic-inspired cockpit, a new squared-off, two-spoke heated steering wheel enables an unobscured view of the 12-inch reconfigurable cluster display. Interior accoutrements
encompass hand-wrapped leather components with thick-press stitching; a generous use of metal, including stainless steel speaker grilles with Bose Performance Series audio system; a choice of aluminum or carbon fiber for console and door trim plates; Corvette’s next-generation infotainment system; and, an industry-pioneering Performance Data Recorder, an advanced driving analysis tool. Options for customization abound, from paint colors to performance. Fancy an Accelerate Yellow body and Adrenaline Red cabin? You can have it by choosing from twelve exterior colors and six interior color themes, in addition to six seat belt colors and two optional stitch packages. A trio of seat options range from the GT1, which emphasizes comfort, to the Competition Sport, which is designed for the track-focused driver. Scheduled to go into production at GM’s Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant in late 2019, the 2020 Stingray will start at under $60,000 (chevy.com/nextgencorvette). sl slmag.net

SOUTHERN DRAW Montage Palmetto Bluff Written by Bridget Williams Spanish moss languidly dangling from majestic live oak trees, waiting for a passing breeze to break its stupor. A sinuous flame endlessly shimmying within a gas lantern. The rhythmic ticking of a fan as it whirls away beneath its mount on porch ceiling painted Haint blue. These sleepy and sultry keepers of the cadence of the deep South are utterly intoxicating to me; their charms persist even as the pace slows even more at the height of summer, when the humidity hangs around your shoulders like a wet, warm blanket and the best antidote is a glass of sweet tea. Epitomizing an idealized version of genteel Lowcountry is Palmetto Bluff, a 20,000-acre development within the historic community of Bluffton, South Carolina. At its heart is Wilson Village, a mixed-use city center whose architecture—including tidy cottages and larger estates disguised as a cluster of smaller dwellings—belies the fact that many of the structures are just over a decade old. Miles and miles of hiking and walking paths meander like the many tributaries of the nearby May, Cooper, and New Rivers. Prominently yet comfortably nestled into this utopia is the Montage Palmetto Bluff, the first East Coast outpost of Montage Hotels & Resorts. Surrounded by 32 miles of riverfront, the resort is comprised of guest cottages, Montage-branded residences 36 slmag.net
and a 74-room Inn that debuted in 2016. With its vast front porch supported by grand columns, the architecture of the Inn pays homage to a storied mansion that stood nearby in the early 1900s . Inside, the elegant coastal-inspired interiors are sprinkled with heirloom-quality fine art (including pieces by notable local artists) and antiques that lend a feeling of residential realness to the graciously proportioned rooms. Arriving at lunchtime, I gladly whiled away the hour before my room was ready by tucking into one of the tastiest cobb salads I've ever had at the Inn's Jessamine Restaurant. The tang of the salad's pimento ranch dressing mixed with the sweetness of candied pecans was divine. Guests of the Inn have access to all seven restaurants spread out over two villages in Palmetto Bluff. The heartiness of Southern cuisine is legendary, and people in living in this region have eaten well for generations. Archaeologists say that ancient shell middens located on high bluffs next to local waterways are remnants of oyster roasts by the Altamaha and Yamassee Native American tribes. Appetites have remained consistent according to Executive Chef Nathan Beriau who said the restaurants under his charge can go through ten-thousands oysters on a holiday weekend.

At Cole's restaurant in the newly developed Moreland Neighborhood, tabby concrete accent walls pay homage to the bounty of the nearby marshland. After loading up on yummy fried pickles, head next door to the state-of-the-art bowling alley, whose gleaming lanes were crafted from a single cypress tree felled on the property. Palmetto Bluff strives to be an ambassador for the foodways of the Lowcountry. You can taste this commitment at every dining outlet, as they receive produce from a small working farm on property. Going beyond the table, their farmers are committed to understanding and improving best practices that can be shared with students and the broader community. So, while you're indulging at Buffalo's famous Biscuit Bar, a craft cocktail at the Octagon Bar, or coastal cuisine at the Canoe Club, you can feel good about supporting local producers. Lucky for me there were ample options to keep active in atonement for my daily indulgences. Each morning I referred to the weekly activities booklet to inform the day's agenda. A cruiser-style bike assigned to me for the duration of my stay allowed for frequent leisurely rides on wide paved bike trails, as well as a few forays onto unpaved pathways that provided an even closer look at the local flora and fauna. An absolute highlight for me was a sunrise kayak excursion. As we paddled
across the smooth-as-glass waters, dolphins dipped in and out of crimson-colored spotlights created by dawn's first light breaking through the clouds. There's also an option to explore local waterways at a more leisurely pace aboard Grace, a recently restored 60-foot 1913 motor yacht. Anglers can fish inland waterways, coastal shallows, or deep waters offshore. Located in a 40-acre hardwood bottom, the new Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club offers 13 sporting clay stations. The Wilson Lawn and Racquet Club features two manicured croquet lawns, two bocce courts, and eight Har-Tru tennis courts. Longfield Stables is part of a 173-acre equestrian facility that offers a variety of programs for guests of all ages and levels of experience. A booklet is printed each week outlining the myriad activities available to guests. A unique aspect of the development is the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy, whose staff of six, including an archaeologist, are tasked with being stewards of the environment and cultural heritage of the property. They carry out their mission via a combination of wildlife management, research, and more than 200 outreach events annually. Conservancy staff have an infectious level of enthusiasm for their job, which has resulted in marked improvements to the local ecosystem at all levels, from bugs to raptors.

Conservancy staff were consulted during development of the par-72, 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed May River championship golf course. Seashore paspalum turfgrass was chosen for being drought resistant and able to handle contact with brackish water. Pesticide use is kept as low as possible, and bird boxes throughout the course ensure that you'll experience at least one type of birdie during your round. A comfort station on the 6th and 15th holes serves up boiled eggs with hot sauce, a curious but beloved Palmetto Bluff tradition started years ago by the original director of the golf program. Back at the Inn, Spa Montage Palmetto Bluff eschews the temptation that befalls many destination spas who veer from their given sense of place into something more generic. The crisp
palette of the pretty environs stays in step with the rest of the property. A spa is only as good as its therapists, and my facialist was a master. My 90-minute facial used indulgent Tata Harper products, including a mask made with pure raw honey that smelled good enough to eat. Spa guests can partake of eucalyptus steam rooms, a whirlpool, cold plunge pool, and redwood sauna. While I still hold tight to my love of the South's sleepy slant, I'll readily admit that I didn't mind upping the tempo to take advantage of the sophisticated satiation offered by engaging in all aspects of the Montage experience. EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSÉ California-meets-Provence at Azur, who pioneered premium Provençale rosé production in the United States Written by Chloe Gellar As summer slowly begins its fade into fall, I find myself reaching for rosé to bridge the gap between light, crisp summer sipping white wines and heartier fireside reds. But if you ask Élan Fayard, co-founder of Azur Wines in the Napa Valley, she'll say that rosé is seasonless. "It's a fun wine that always has its place on the table," she said. A Bay Area native and a Francophile from an early age, Élan spent her sophomore year studying abroad in Angers, France. Her passion for food, wine, and the written word took her on a postcollege journey to Oregon's Willamette Valley and then back to France, where she worked and studied in Bordeaux and Provence. Along the way, she met winemaker Julien Fayard, who hails from a French wine-producing family, and together they devised a plan for making French-inspired and terroir-driven wine in California. "Napa is the Bordeaux of the USA," explained Élan. "It was our goal to produce the best wines possible, and we sought out sunlight and a great place to live. Napa footed the bill." Julien's family has been making rosé in Provence for more than five decades. Upon their return to the United States fifteen years ago, both Julien and Élan were discouraged by a dearth of good rosé. In fact, the words "quality" and "rosé" were rarely, if ever used in the same sentence. Seeking to define their niche in the Napa Valley, they started a pioneering crusade to change rosé's image, one sip at a time. Julien worked with local growers to select and harvest grapes for dedicated rosé wine production. 44 slmag.net
With the release of their first 50 cases, Azur quickly made a name for itself as the first winery in the United States dedicated to an authentic Provençale technique for rosé wine production. The name the Fayard's chose for their winery—Azur— pays homage to the time they spent living in Southern France and underscores that their wines are produced in the French style. Élan said the first three years in business were the hardest, as they worked to inform miseducated consumers that rosé isn't white Zinfandel. Today, Azur has two labels. Azur, which encompasses a rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, a Proprietary Red, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Reserve. Ideal for avid collectors, their Empreinte label is a single vineyard designee only available through allocation as production is limited to 100 cases or less. In 2018 the winery opened The Green Room, its first tasting room. Outfitted in reclaimed wood and touches of sumptuous green velvet, a floor-to-ceiling window in the intimate space provides a full view into the crush pad. While Élan admits to missing some of the aspects unique to living in France, she does enjoy the wine and food culture in Napa. "It's an invigorating place to live where nearly everyone in this industry is here by choice. That may not seem like much, but almost every person you meet is following their passion." sl Open daily from 11am-6pm, The Green Room at Azur located at 190 Camino Oruga #9 in Napa, California. BREAKING THE MOLD
Lotus unveils the world's most potent all-electric production car Written by Andre James This past July at the Royal Horticultural Halls in the heart of London, the oohs and aahs emanating from hundreds of VIP guests were louder than the engine of the hypercar they'd gathered to ogle. Guests were greeted outside the event by a convoy of a dozen historic and current Lotus cars, all sporting a blazing yellow paint job. This bold statement paled in comparison to the unveiling of the world's first all-electric British hypercar: the Lotus Evija. As he presented the nearly 2,000 horsepower two-seater to the audience, Phil Popham, CEO of Lotus Cars remarked, "The Evija is a seismic shift for Lotus and signifies the rebirth of one of the UK's most renowned sports car marques. It will act as a halo for the thrilling new range of Lotus performance cars that will follow." Limited to 130 examples, the Evija (pronounced 'E-vi-ya'), means 'the first in existence' or 'the living one.' As Lotus' first hypercar, and its first model with an electrified powertrain, it represents a new chapter for the 71-year-old sports car brand. The Evija is also the first Lotus road car to feature a onepiece carbon-fiber monocoque chassis; the manufacturing 48 slmag.net
process is identical to that of an F1 chassis. Russell Carr, Design Director of Lotus Cars, explained, "We studied how Le Mans race cars use airflow creatively to go over, under and around the vehicle, but also through it. This concept of 'porosity' is key to the Evija and has enabled us to create a timeless design with exceptional amounts of downforce." Motorsport-inspired road car design and technology is expressed throughout, from the Venturi tunnel that pierces each rear quarter to the adjustable race-style seats. To minimize drag, traditional door mirrors are strikingly absent. Cameras integrated into the front wings electronically deploy on unlock, as well as another camera built into the roof. Their images are displayed on three interior screens. Also missing are door handles. The pair of dihedral doors are operated via the key fob. Once in the car, a switch in the roof console closes the doors. The advanced all-electric powertrain was developed in tandem with Williams Advanced Engineering, of Formula One and Formula E fame. The 2,000 kW lithium-ion battery pack is mid-mounted behind the passenger compartment and directs
energy to four e-motors, each producing a peak 493 horsepower. This configuration represents the lightest and most energy-dense electric power package ever fitted to a road car, making Evija the lightest pure electric hypercar ever to go into series production. Torque-vectoring is fully automatic and self-adjusting, so that power is distributed to any combination of two, three, or four wheels within a fraction of a second. ESP stability control ensures safety in all road conditions. Evija clocks the 0-62mph sprint in under three seconds, before going on to a top speed in excess of 200mph. Lotus points out that the car's advanced aerodynamics and four-radiator cooling package keep the battery at an optimum temperature, meaning that the Evija is capable of being driven flat-out with no derate for at least seven minutes in Track mode. A digitally created sound, transmitted via a front-mounted speaker, alerts pedestrians to Evija's presence. Fully charged, the Evija's range is between 250-270 miles. Using existing charging technology, charge time will be 12 mins to 80% and 18 mins to 100%.
The 'floating wing' dashboard is arguably the most striking feature of the cabin, which Carr said was inspired by Lotus' prototype racing cars from the late Fifties and early Sixties. "It reinforces Colin Chapman's cast-iron rule that no Lotus component goes along for a free ride, " added Carr. Carbon fiber shell seats are hand-trimmed with thick Alcantara-finished pads. A thin metal band – engraved with the words 'For The Drivers' – runs centrally through the squab of both. Ahead of the steering wheel is a state-of-the-art digital display, providing the driver with key information. The screen displays essential functions only, with information appearing as required when the appropriate button is pushed, then fading when no longer needed. Further controls are located on the floating 'ski slope-style' center console. Priced from just over $2m, Lotus will offer Evija customers the opportunity to specify the car precisely as they wish, including unique paint finishes, interior trims, and detailing. Designed and engineered in the UK, production is scheduled to begin at Lotus’ Hethel headquarters in 2020. sl slmag.net

Angama Mara immerses guests in all aspects of Kenya's legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve Written and Photographed by Tony Bailey The notion that one could become dinner en route to dinner is not a thought that ever crossed my mind…until my first night at Angama Mara, a luxury safari resort located just a few degrees south of the Equator in the heart of Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve. As a professional photographer, what obviously drew me to Angama Mara were the animals, but what ultimately endeared me to the place was its people, who added an earnest dimension of authenticity to an unapparelled experience. It would be easy for the Fitzgerald family, who opened the resort in 2015, to let the all-inclusive property's picturesque positioning—the very site where some of the most romantic scenes from Out of Africa were filmed—do all of the heavy lifting, but they don't. Beginning with an early morning tray of tea and biscuits delivered to my suite with a smile as warm as dawn's first light, to helping identify constellations and animal calls that ripple the blanket of night, there are certainly no cookie-cutter experiences to be had. With a name inspired by the Swahili word for 'suspended in mid-air,' Angama Mara is cited on a bluff some 1,000 feet over the Maasai Mara, high enough for the two camps of tented guest suites to be at eye level with hot air balloons as they float past at daybreak. 54 slmag.net
A far cry from any tent I've camped in, each suite boasts a 30-footwide, floor-to-ceiling glass wall offering unimpeded "pinch me" views in every direction. Keeping you continuously connected with nature, everything in the spacious studio-style suite is oriented to the aforementioned glass wall, including a soaking tub that promises an indulgent afternoon of ogling. A whistle hanging outside the entrance to each tent serves as a poignant reminder that we are all part of the food chain in this wild place. From dusk to dawn it is used to summon a member of the Maasai tribe who will accompany you as you traverse the property. Connecting the two camps is The Pavilion, which includes a zeroedge swimming pool, a well-equipped fitness room, a safari shop, and a Maasai design studio. Angama Mara staff attended to our group's every need from the moment we deplaned in Nairobi. Following a Kenya Air flight in business class that allowed us to arrive well-rested, we made our way to nearby Wilson Airport for a short and exhilarating AirKenya flight to Angama Mara's private airfield, where a herd of zebras lining the runway served as unofficial greeters. From here, you can opt for a 15-minute walk into camp, or get there a bit quicker via Land Cruiser.
Accommodations at Angama Mara are positioned on a bluff 1,000 feet above Kenya's Great Rift Valley Escarpment.
Luxurious tented guest suites provide breathtaking views.

As a small lodge, itineraries at Angama Mara are agile and custom-tailored to the interests and abilities of each guest. Daily' Big Five' safaris take place in the acclaimed Mara triangle. Excellent for game viewing year-round, there is an uptick in activity during the great migration, which takes place from July to October. Wilderness walks along the Great Rift Valley are proudly led by members of the Maasai tribe, who share aspects of their ancient and fascinating culture. On select evenings, guests are treated to an energizing pre-dinner demonstration of traditional Maasai dancing. To gain a greater appreciation for the vastness of the landscape and the sheer number of animals who call it home, head up in a hot air balloon. Angama Mara partners with Governors' Balloon Safaris, who has been flying over the Maasai Mara since 1972. The colorful family members who operate the company boast an immense knowledge of the area along with nerves of steel, which were put on display when, at the end of our hour-long adventure, a charging elephant scuttled our intended landing site. The ensuing maneuvers to ensure the safety of both man and beast provided a jolt of adrenaline and a well-deserved champagne toast to our pilot after returning to terra firma.
Before setting out on any safari, guests are encouraged to visit the Angama Mara photo studio for expert photography advice and the opportunity to rent additional camera equipment. For those itching to see their images on something other than a screen, the studio also offers photo printing services. During safari days, lunch is safely staged at a photogenic spot that varies from day-to-day. On more than one occasion curious creatures, including a hyena, expressed an interest in accepting (or commandeering) handouts and were swiftly shooed away without incident. Dinner, which is simply sensational, sometimes spicy, and inspired by what camp chefs might have prepared in the early days of being on safari, can be had in the guest area, under the stars, in the bush or in your tent. Our bush barbeque under the stars was an experience I won't soon forget, as was a lavish champagne brunch at the Kopje, where you can recreate your own Out of Africa moment. Angama Mara grows a fair amount of fruit and vegetables in their one-acre Shamba, or kitchen garden, and the popular Shamba lunch program allows interested guests the opportunity to pick their own ingredients. It is interesting to note that one-third of the menus are designed with vegetarian guests in mind, and their Kenyan chefs can accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions. slmag.net

"Every day, our staff ensure that guest delight is everyone's business, and that kindness, warmth, and love are brought to each one of our guest's stays," said Kate Fitzgerald Boyd. To give back to the community that has given so much to them, the Fitzgerald family established the Angama Foundation, which focuses on three areas of impact: education, healthcare, and conservation. It comes as little surprise that Angama Mara was named #1 Safari Lodge in the World by CondĂŠ Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards 2018. Standing as a silent and solemn testament to the mutual admiration of the hotelier and its guests is a 100-seat chapel erected in memory of co-founder Steve Fitzgerald that opened in December 2018 on what would have been Steve's 65th birthday. The chapel was built in part using donations that poured in from guests hailing from all corners of the globe as word spread of his untimely passing. Steve's daughter Kate, who runs the lodge with
her mother Nicky, says that her father was the heart of Angama Mara. "There is no doubt in my, or anyone else's, mind that Angama Mara simply would not exist without my father having a crazy dream and the courage to see it through almost four years ago," she said. The round portal of the “Arch Garden” leads to raised planters and a unique specimen tree.
BLURRING THE LINES, BLENDING THE SPACES Written By Joan Lerch / Photography By Alise O’Brien
“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” –Cicero This often-referenced observation from the ancient Roman statesman might not be his exact words, but the philosophy rings true. And when the library has a view to a private Zen garden, with a transcendent soundtrack from a nearby waterfall, why would you ever want to leave? From the earliest conversations about the creation of this custom home built by Johnson Development, Co., the outdoor spaces were an important component of the entire project, explains designer Kelly Johnson, owner of Kelly Johnson Design. While some features were added as the house evolved, there were a few 66 slmag.net
must-haves from the beginning. “The owners had a wish list of things they wanted, and they specifically asked for a putting green, a firepit, and a separate verandah off of the master bedroom.” The spectacular custom waterfall was not part of the original concept, however. Explaining how it came to be, the designer says, “They were adamant about not having a swimming pool, but the outdoor space needed a focal point. The home’s large windows, which bring the inside and outside together, are an integral part of the design, so a water feature seemed to be a natural fit.” With that in mind, Johnson set out to find just the right element. After researching photos of fountains, waterfalls and reflecting basins, the designer combined elements from more than a dozen
pictures to create the final design, expertly executed by architect Bill Cover and Pool Tron. She admits the end result is her favorite part of the outdoor space. “I especially love that you can see it from so much of the inside of the house, and the sound is magnificent. Sometimes you can even hear it inside with the doors closed— it’s so soothing and subtle.” Integrating the waterfall into the home’s design helped with another homeowner request— a walkout lower level. “This was a level lot, with everything on the same grade,” Johnson explains. “But the height of the waterfall allowed us to dig and give them the walkout they wanted.” Framed perfectly by lower-level French doors, the waterfall brings the outdoors into this part of the house, too.
After the home and the first round of outdoor spaces were completed, another stunning focal point was added to the garden at the homeowners’ request. Dubbed the “Arch Garden,” it’s a fabulous trellis tunnel that beckons the visitor to discover what awaits at the other end. Describing it as a “brilliant idea,” Johnson adds, “That was all Tony.” The “Tony” with the brilliant vision is Tony Frisella, vicepresident of sales at Frisella Landscaping, and self-described “passionate visionary of what can be.” Explaining the development of the “Arch Garden,” he says, “When the landscape was being installed, one of the homeowners mentioned that he wanted to have a garden with raised planters. We talked about four cedar wood boxes, and that’s how it all started.” slmag.net

An aural and visual treat, the dramatic waterfall is a grand focal point in the outdoor space.
Every golfer’s backyard dream, the private putting green is practice-ready.
Visible from the Asianinfluenced library, the Zen garden is a peaceful oasis.
Cool evenings get cozy around the stone firepit, with built-in seating and lots of pillows.
68 slmag.net
Just outside the master bedroom suite, a private verandah is intimate and inviting.
Frisella found inspiration for his design at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Columbus, Ohio. “They had utilized a trellis concept in their raised planters, so that was the beginning of my idea. Then I saw an Instagram photo of an archway made from pebbles, and that led to the design of the stone portal.” Designing for experienced art collectors was also motivational, he adds. “They are very art-loving people— I knew we had to do something special.” He credits Evan Winkler, Frisella’s landscape designer, with the finishing touch. “He found the circular trellises that mimic the shape of the stone archway, and the style was perfect.” Outfitted with tiny flood lights, the inviting tunnel leads to an illuminated seven-son flower tree, set in a planter fashioned from the same stone as the entry. With an intrinsic understanding of his clients, Frisella designs landscapes uniquely suited to their needs, like the Zen garden just outside the library. “I know this homeowner is a high performer in her job, and I consider a high-performance landscape to be the essence of well-being. Sophisticated people understand the importance of visualization and meditation, and that requires the right environment— barefoot, feet in the dirt or in the mulch, not on concrete. What better way than to immerse yourself in the lush living environment that plants provide?” In addition to its meditation-conducive atmosphere, the serene space is another example of linking indoors and out, as Johnson explains. “It all works well together, because the library has a subtle Asian influence, and so does the Zen garden.” When the mood turns from contemplative to celebratory, the outdoor spaces welcome guests in style and comfort. On the covered main verandah, designed by architect Bill Cover, a fireplace and
television are showcased in a wall of smooth stone blocks beneath a dramatic vaulted ceiling, and an outdoor kitchen (complete with the Big Green Egg) means party food will be close at hand. As the evenings cool down, and the liquid refreshment changes from chilled Pinot Grigio to hot buttered rum, built-in seating around the stone firepit offers the perfect gathering spot for softly illuminated conversation. The space was designed for comfort and convenience, and Johnson sourced plush cushions and pillows upholstered in maintenance-free fabrics. “While they don’t have to be brought inside regularly, there are times they need to be stored— like when pollen is falling, for example. We had Johnson Development’s carpenters build cabinetry from Accoya® wood because it is so resistant to the elements, and then fit them to the back of the firepit. So now everything can be stored and retrieved easily.” The subtle colors were a deliberate choice by the designer. “Neutrals and naturals tie into the calming colors of the house, and that was the idea. In the case of the indoors, it’s about letting the art shine— in the outdoors, it’s letting nature and the view take over.” For quiet evenings just for two, the homeowners have a second covered verandah outside their master bedroom suite. Separate from the more public areas, it offers a close-up perspective of the putting green just a few steps away. Perfectly illustrating the philosophy of British architect Stephen Gardiner, who said “The garden, by design, is concerned with both the interior and the land beyond the garden,” Frisella’s design of mature trees encircling the perimeter of the property ensures the verandah is completely private and peaceful. As for Cicero’s pronouncement from two millenniums past? Perhaps he was on to something. sl

FROM FICTION TO FABULOUS On Location in Berkshire, England
Written By Joan Lerch / Photos Appear Courtesy of Highclere Castle In 2011, when I first became enchanted with what would become the most successful show in the history of the PBS “Masterpiece” series, I tried recommending it to friends. The reaction was a polite “no thanks,” because an English costume drama was just too stodgy to contemplate. A few years later, these same friends were dressing in period clothing and hosting watch parties. Even if you were not among the 120 million viewers in more than 200 countries who were captivated by “Downton Abbey,” you might recognize the stunning Italianate-style country house that has been home to the Earls of Carnarvon since 1679. Remodeled and reimagined through the centuries, Highclere Castle as it now stands was designed for the 3rd Earl by Sir Charles Barry, architect of London’s Houses of Parliament. Today, the 300-room castle is home to George Herbert and his wife Fiona, the eighth Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. While Highclere and its 6,000 acres are open to visitors in the summer, I wanted a more intimate experience, so when I learned of an exclusive Art & Architecture lecture given by Lady Carnarvon herself, followed by lunch and a private tour, it was the best possible excuse to head across the Pond. After arriving by train in Newbury, Berkshire, I settled into a cozy guest house and then went exploring. Charming, walkable and oh-so-English, Newbury is made even more picturesque by the romantic Kennett & Avon Canal that meanders through the town. Along the footpath, I happened upon the Teashop by the Canal— an old stone treasure of a place to sip Earl Grey and admire the preening swans. Later in the evening, I enjoyed a warm welcome and great food at Bill’s Restaurant in the pedestrianfriendly Market Square. (This experience was enhanced by a delightful server named Daisy, which also happens to be the name of the very first character viewers met when “Downton Abbey” premiered— a lovely coincidence.) During its six record-breaking seasons, “Downton Abbey” told the story of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants, from news of the Titanic, through World War I and concluding in 1925. While much of the story was filmed in Highclere, the castle’s kitchens were too modern, so an era-appropriate kitchen and servants’ hall was built at Ealing Studio in London. (Julian
Fellowes, the show’s creator, said this presented continuity challenges, as actors left the kitchen with platters of food, only to emerge into the dining room two weeks later.) Having arrived in Newbury after two rainy weeks in Guernsey, I hoped that the castle would be awash in sunshine, because if I was going to replicate Lord Grantham’s walk up that famous gravel driveway, an umbrella and wellies would really spoil the vision. But as my driver turned into the estate, the weather was perfect. And when I got my first glimpse of Highclere beneath an impossibly blue sky and enormous fluffy clouds, I was, in a word, gobsmacked. The lecture was held in the Saloon, perhaps the most recognizable room in the castle, with its soaring 50-foot ceiling and second-floor gallery. Described by Lady Carnarvon as “physically and socially the heart of the house,” the wallcoverings in the Gothic-style space are fashioned from leather brought from Cordoba, Spain by the 3rd Earl. Following the lecture, we toured the main state rooms, including the exquisite library, home to more than 5,000 books. At one end, a section of faux volumes is actually a hidden door that leads to the music room. Ascending a secondary staircase gave us the opportunity to walk the entire gallery, before returning to the saloon via the magnificent 19th century main stairs. After an alfresco lunch and a few hours of garden exploration, I was relaxing in the courtyard, reliving every sublime detail of a perfect day, when a lilting, familiar voice said, “Hello! Would you join me for a glass of champagne?” And there at my table stood Lady Carnarvon, smiling and holding her own flute of bubbly. Managing to stammer, “of course,” I was a bit panicked— if there is a rulebook for drinking with a Countess, I didn’t have a copy. But within minutes, she had me laughing and chatting like we were old friends. Warm, gracious and with a glimmer of mischief in her eyes, Lady Carnarvon is the author of several well-researched books on Highclere history, in addition to being a talented speaker. In the years I have been exploring England’s manor houses and palaces, I’ve tried to imagine the people who lived there— picturing Anne Boleyn dancing at Hampton Court, or Winston Churchill spending his school holidays at Blenheim Palace. But this time, I didn’t have to use my imagination. sl

SOUTHERN STYLE AT GRACELAND Written By Carrie Edelstein / Photos Courtesy of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.
For the first time ever, parts of Graceland will be open for dinner. The “Elegant Southern Style Weekend at Graceland” is a unique event that will celebrate the food, fashion, architecture, design and culture of the American South. And the host? Priscilla Presley. “On all my worldwide travels one of the questions I will always get asked is the fascination of ‘Why did Elvis always return to Memphis after every movie, after his Las Vegas stay or touring?’” says Presley. She adds, “It was because it was where he felt most comfortable. He couldn’t get from L.A. or really any other place what he got from the South– the people, the food, favorite restaurants, the feeling of good ole Southern comfort and hospitality, the unique styles, the Victorian homes, the people he grew up with, his long-time friends and of course, his Graceland.” Ms. Presley says she hadn’t experienced that kind of comfort until she first met Elvis as a teenager. “Elvis was friendly and very open. He was curious about what was happening in the States as far as music was concerned and about the songs that I liked. I was quite shy so he did all the talking. He was very natural which made it comfortable for me to be somewhat relaxed. His grandma fixed dinner for me when Elvis brought me to the kitchen and doted on me the whole time, which I wasn’t used to.” The three-day weekend to be held September 27-29 will feature well-known chefs, interior and fashion designers, and the speaker who inspired the movie “The Blind Side,” Leigh Anne Tuohy. Renowned chef Jim Norton, a regular guest on the Hallmark Channel, is among the panelists. “It really is a goal of mine to inspire and motivate the younger generation to host dinner parties and entertain in their homes,” says Norton. “There is nothing like having a group of friends sitting around your dining table laughing, telling stories, and enjoying a meal you have prepared for them. And if you are 74 slmag.net
not a ‘fancy cook’ that’s okay. You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to host a dinner party.” Presley says, “When I lived at Graceland I always set the table with beautiful place settings, flowers, candles and low lighting. Elvis never liked bright lights. We always dressed up for dinner ready to go where he fancied. Mostly though, the movie theater. I still incorporate that same tradition in my home with family and friends. I love creating a beautiful and warm atmosphere where my guests don’t want to leave. We’ve spent many late nights with conversations, like days in the past.” Seminar topics over the Southern Style Weekend include Southern hospitality and entertaining, outdoor living: home and garden, Southern décor and architecture, home cooking, Southern style, and Southern Fashion. The weekend also features multiple dinners and parties, food and cocktail tastings, crafting workshops and The Style of Graceland Show, where Priscilla and Graceland’s Head of Archives, Angie Marchese, will provide rare insight into the design of the iconic home. VIP ticketholders will have a photo opportunity with Presley as well as an exclusive meal prepared by James Beard Award semi-finalist Kelly English. That will take place on the grounds of Graceland overlooking the pasture; Priscilla’s favorite spot and one never before opened to the public. “The South definitely feels more like home and I’m very comfortable in the surroundings,” Presley says. “I have so many longtime friends there. Every time I’m in Memphis we get together and hang out at the Guest House at Graceland, the Peabody Hotel, their homes, the various favorite restaurants, etc.” Tickets for the weekend include a discounted rate offer at the Guest House at Graceland, which is filled with Elvis memorabilia and specialty suites designed with the help of Ms. Presley herself. sl *More event details can be found at sophisticatedstlouis.com.

Has the judge made up their mind?
In divorce or family law matters, pre-trial conferences, settlement conferences and other preliminary court dates often take place. These court appearances can sometimes take place in open court. In other instances, they can take place in chambers with only the attorneys present. In many of these court appearances, the attorneys in the case tell the judge their client’s versions of the facts of the case. They also might tell the court what it is their client wants. The hope on the part of the attorneys and the parties is often to have the judge weigh in terms of what they think. Many then hope that this can lead to a settlement of some kind. Some parties even take this a step further. They worry when the judge gives some preliminary thoughts or opinions that the judge has already made up their mind. Many feel as if they might not have much of a choice but to settle after hearing the judge’s input. While parties certainly want to hear the preliminary thoughts of the judge carefully in terms of weighing their options, the truth is that a family court judge is not to definitively make up their mind until they have heard the evidence. While a judge might hear arguments and take in some information at these court appearances, evidence is formally admitted at a trial or evidentiary hearing.
At a trial or evidentiary hearing, witnesses can testify. Evidence can also be admitted, like documentary, photographic, video or other electronic evidence. Expert witnesses can also give opinion testimony and reports. At the conclusion of the evidence, this is when a judge is only supposed to make up their mind and enter a judgment. Thus, while it feels at a preliminary court appearance that a judge has already made up their mind, parties do have a due process right to a hearing in the family court. Sometimes, what a judge says in a court appearance is not always what they do after they have heard all the evidence. Rebound! 10 Things St. Louis Surge’s Khalia Collier Can’t Live Without
Written by Carrie Edelstein / Photo Courtesy Of Christopher Mikals She was just 23 when she decided to rule the court. It was eight years ago Khalia Collier became the general manager and owner of the St. Louis Surge women’s basketball team. Under her management, the team has won several national championships, and the attendance numbers have grown from about 50 visitors per game to a few thousand. Head to a Surge home game at Washington University’s Field House Complex, and you’ll see the team’s biggest cheerleader running around the court in high heels. “Basketball was by far my first love,” Collier says. She earned a collegiate scholarship and played Division I basketball for Columbia College. But when her excellence in golf was rising, Collier shifted her focus, putting basketball on the back burner. Yet the sport found a way back into her heart through the business route. Collier says it’s a business that booms on the off season as she tries to secure new partnerships and also recruit new players and staff. “Everyone knows I love the quote, ‘If better is possible then good is not enough.’ We’re never complacent and we’re always pushing for the ultimate goal which is the pursuit of perfection,” says Collier. When asked what she does for fun, Collier tells friends, “I go to basketball games.” Her list of things she can’t live without would tend to support that answer as well. 1. 2. 3. 4.
St. Louis Surge fans. Her cell phone. Basketball and sports. Her mom’s Spaghetti. “I don’t know what her secret is, but it is definitely her signature spaghetti.” 5. “My Amex. When I first started I was part of a group that was far more experienced in business and they told me ‘Khalia, you have to charge everything.’” 6. Traveling “It keeps you cultured and it keeps you hungry and that’s just a part of meeting new people.” 7. Comedy specials on Netflix. 8. White t-shirts. 9. Working out and push-ups. 10. All things Drake related. “I feel like it’s definitely on my bucket list to meet him. Hopefully my wish comes true to be able to meet him in the next year.” sl 88 slmag.net
