Examples of Freshman Faculty Learning Community (FFLC) Reflection Papers

Stephanie N. Allen FFLC #2 Implementing the Flipped Classroom in World History 101 I recently had the opportunity to introduce the “flipped classroom” strategy to my World History 101 students. The “flipped classroom” strategy involves the instructor posting digital podcasts or online videos. Students are encouraged to access the lecture outside of class. I have used the flipped classroom before, however, I have decided to make it a consistent feature of my survey World History courses. The benefits to the students seem to far outweigh the time that it takes to prepare and post the podcasts. I believe the consistent use of the flipped classroom method was quite beneficial to my students. Prior to compiling this paper, I inquired as to how effective the students’ thought the flipped classroom method was and I received more positive than negative feedback. I think that implementing the flipped classroom method mid-semester was ideal because students were able to compare how they fared with employing the use of both traditional lecture and flipped classroom delivery. Based on student feedback I learned that students tend to enjoy the freedom of the flipped classroom. My students expressed that with the flipped classroom they can explore lecture materials at their own pace, whereas with traditional lectures they have to keep the pace that is set by the instructor. Additionally, because they are not bound by time constraints of a 50 or 80 minute class session, they are not forced to listen to the entire lecture in one sitting. This method may prove extremely beneficial to students who have attention deficit problems as well as other learning disabilities. Secondly, students liked flipped classroom because they can easily rewind the podcasts and did not feel embarrassed by asking me to repeat what I said in front of other students. I have found that oftentimes students will have missed a concept, but are unwilling to ask questions

Stephanie N. Allen FFLC #2 because my survey courses are so large and they do not want to run the risk of their classmates thinking they are unintelligent. Furthermore, students liked the flipped classroom because they felt less “lost” during classroom lecture as they had more background information on the day’s material. Lastly, my students expressed that they liked the flipped classroom because they could re-listen to lectures in an effort to prepare for the exam. I am going to utilize the flipped classroom as a way to make the classroom more studentcentered. In the survey courses, the instructor is required to move through the information relatively fast because we take departmental tests. Each World History professor is responsible for covering the same information in the allotted time for each unit. The flipped classroom allows me to “slow down” and not having to move through information so quickly in class means the students can ask more in-depth questions and engage in more critical thinking opportunities. This is because students have more background info and discussions are richer because they are not just staring off into space, praying not to be call upon because they have not completed the assigned reading. I am going to consistently use the flipped classroom because it feels like a more collaborative way of teaching as students are more engaged during class lecture. Although it is time consuming to prepare digital versions of lectures it makes teaching seem easier. Students seem more relaxed and less frenzied in their attempt to take notes and they seem to have more confidence concerning knowledge of the textual information. Perhaps most importantly, I like the flipped method because it has the potential to create active, engaged learners who are proactive about their education. Additionally, I believe that the flipped classroom is beneficial for student athletes. Class attendance is directly tied to success in my course. Traditionally, if students are missing classes,

Stephanie N. Allen FFLC #2 they are missing lecture notes, which correlates to not being adequately prepared for the exams. The flipped classroom allows students who miss class to still gain valuable lecture information and feel like part of the classroom even in their absence. This benefits student athletes, but also non-traditional students who have sick kids or work full-time jobs. The flipped method seems to take away excuses as to why students cannot be successful. Although the benefits outweigh the cons, I did discover several cons of the flipped method. The cons include: 1) despite being constantly “connected, students are not as tech savvy as they appear, 2) some students do not have a reliable internet source to listen to the podcasts, and 3) it can be time consuming for both the student and the instructor. Additionally, an instructor related con would be that my department does not have the necessary resources to support audiovisual features, instead I was only able to upload voice recordings.

Freshmen Faculty Class Project; Edward Bond, Professor of History

For my freshmen faculty CETL project, I used the strategy about asking better questions in class. I used this primarily with one of my weaker class, my HYIS 102 at 8:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Before the second exam, I helped students review for the exam by putting them in groups of seven to eight people (there were ninety students in the class). I then gave each group a list of paired key terms (for example: Kangxi and John Locke; African Diaspora and Zionism) and asked them to find a way to make the terms fit together in some way and to discuss this with the members in the group. I have long advocated that students study by randomly picking a few key terms from the chapters we have covered and try to find a way that they relate to each other, but I had never tried it as a class project. Pairing the terms and trying to fit them together makes the student go beyond the simple act of memorization and the tendency to memorize the material in isolation from the rest of the chapter and additional chapters. Pairing the terms may seem simple, but it actually makes students try and discover the connections that lie beneath the historical narrative, thus making it easier for them to understand the narrative and some of the complexities of history. As you can imagine, in class of ninety students there was a wide degree of seriousness to this task, with some groups or students diving right in and others just chatting about other things or refusing to participate. This report will focus on those students who struck me as taking the exercise most seriously and who clearly discussed the paired terms with the other members of their groups. The results were interesting as every one of the students I noted during the exercise as participating, improved their exam score on the second exam. Some of the gains were striking— 44 to 66, 46 to 72, 66 to 84, 78 to 94, 58 to 93, and 78 to 92. Others showed more moderate gains: from 80 to 94, from 78 to 85 and then a 92 on the third exam. Overall, the average increase among the students who took this assignments seriously was about 20 points, from an average of 64.6% to 84.3%. What is more, in seventy percent of the cases, the students who took 1‐ Edward Bond

this exercise seriously continued to achieve comparably higher scores on the third exam. The exercise also had some anecdotal positive results regarding attendance. The students who took the assignments seriously and participated in it, in eighty percent of the cases, demonstrated far better attendance and timeliness in getting to class for the rest of the semester than the class as a whole. The size of the History 101 classes could make this strategy difficult to implement as it can be difficult to get a class of that size to discuss material. I also fear that it may be a strategy that appeals more to those students who already have good study skills and just need some suggestions on how to improve further or who find the paired terms a valuable intellectual challenge. Of course, one class gives us anecdotal evidence rather than scientific evidence, but it proved helpful to a number of the student who employed it.

Dr. Sean Halverson CETL Paper May 7, 2017 TEACHING METHODS In the spring of 2017, I attended six CETL professional development worships that focused on a wide range of innovative teaching methods. Throughout the semester, I attempted three of the methods discussed in the workshop sessions within my history classes. The three methods that I utilized in my classes included “Flipped Classroom Techniques,” “How to Ask Effective Questions in the Classroom,” and “Writing to Learn.” I found these methods an effective approach to developing students’ critical thinking skills and assessing student learning outcomes within the classroom. I used the “How to Ask Effective Questions in the Classroom” method discussed by Professor Linda Woods within my undergraduate level Military History 315 class this semester. The exercise required students to watch a scene from a film and then address questions. I always use a wide range of audio-visual technologies as a learning tool to engage students and assess student learning within my classrooms. However, I had never provided a student with a specific numbered critical thinking question that required students to verbally answer that specific question after watching a video. At the start of class, I showed my students the opening twenty minutes of the war film, Saving Private Ryan. Prior to the showing, I had created a series of numbered questions for students to answer after watching the video scenes in class. At the start of that class each student choose a number. Each number represented a different critical thinking question to address. As a result each student within the Military History class received a different question. After the class collectively watched the video, I called each number randomly one by one. Each student responded to their respective question without the assistance of other students. Students proceeded to verbally answer their question when called upon. This process directly engaged students and facilitated a productive classroom discussion that included the whole class. I found that in answering the questions students gained a greater understanding of World War II related course content and how that topic continues to affect their own lives. In addition, I experimented with “The Flipped Classroom Method” discussed by Professor Kenneth Sartor. Students within my American History 202 and World History 101 classes had to complete historical film assignments. The assignments required students to watch 1‐ Sean Halverson

the documentaries outside of the classroom. I provided the URL links on Blackboard. These films focused on significant historical themes, events, and locations. For example, the World History students watched two documentaries that described the Great Wall of China and Roman Coliseum. My American history class watched documentaries on the West and Watergate. After watching these documentaries outside of class, students answered ten graded multiple choice questions from each video in class. I found such films an effective informational and visual method for students to use as a learning tool. The assignments seem to have helped student preparation for exams and quizzes. Furthermore, I developed a series of one-two minute paper assignments to implement the “Writing-to-Learn” method discussed within Professor Anthony Ricks topic titled “Increasing Student Engagement within the Classroom.” I specifically required students in my American History 202 and World History 101 classes to complete a two minute ungraded paper at the conclusion of the class period. Students wrote these brief short answer responses a number of times throughout the semester. These papers required a student to write short answers and revealed what students had learned the most and found most interesting within that days lecture topic. A provided students with a question to answer. For example, within my World History courses, I asked each student to answer on their own the question what they believed the most important point discussed within lecture today and explain. Also I would ask students about specific themes addressed within that class lecture. For instance, on one occasion, I asked students to answer what is the greatest consequence of the Ming Dynasty? In the American History 202 class, I required each student to answer who is a progressive and what is the progressive movement’s greatest impact on American society? Each student had two minutes to respond to the questions. After students submitted their responses, we discussed the question as a class. I found that students responded well to these critical thinking question writing assignments. A number of students admitted that writing the short answer responses provided them with a greater understanding of the course material. Also the responses revealed for the professor a quick informal assessment of student learning. Consequently, I will certainly continue to require more two minute papers within my future courses. Likely next semester, I will add into my syllabus’s graded short answer two minute papers as well. 2‐ Sean Halverson

Reflections on the use of Strategies Presented in the CETL Workshops Physics is a difficult class for most of the students here at Alabama A & M University and I am always looking for effective strategies to help our students be successful. I really wanted to use the strategy presented by Mr. Webb on “Modeling Real World Examples to Increase Student Engagement”, however, the prep time for this one required more time than I had to implement it effectively considering my need to cover 14 chapters in the PHY 213 class and 8 chapters in the PHY 202 class. In PHY 213, I had 33 students. Only 6 or 7 students did well on the first few quizzes. I used the strategy presented by Dr. Sartar and gave the students a group quiz as a Group Project with the goal being that they would learn from each other, learn to work together, and hopefully, carry the group learning format outside the classroom. The group quiz covered material that had been covered in previous assignments. The group quiz included concept questions which were fill in the blanks questions and multi‐step computational problems. I assigned the top students in the class to serve as group leaders, and after distributing each person a quiz in black and white and each group a quiz in color, I gave the following instructions. 1.

The group quiz must be completed with the input of all group members

2.

The group leader was charged with making sure everyone solved at least one problem

3.

If the answer was not confirmed by the majority, the problem would be reworked until the

majority agreed on the answer 4.

Only the completed color quiz could be submitted and everyone in the group would receive the

same grade There were 6 groups and because not all students were present, the group size was between 4 and 5 students each. As I observed the groups, I saw the group leaders doing most of the work while others looked on. I told the leaders that they had to delegate and assign problems to all the members. After working through a few of the problems, I saw more interaction. For example, I observed students working one on one, talking through steps, attempting to solve a problem. I overheard one student explain to the other why his answer could not possibly be correct. Of course I heard conversations indicating they were off task, but that was expected. Overall, the students commented that they enjoyed working as a group, and some of the poor performers finally received a passing quiz grade. Each student kept his own individual quiz as a study guide. This activity took the entire class time of 2 hours 20 minutes. I also used the Flipped Classroom strategy in PHY 202. For each chapter, I provide the students with a prepared equation sheet containing all the terms, equations, and constants that they will cover in the chapter. For Chapter 13, I emailed the class a powerpoint presentation, and using the text book and PPT they were given the assignment of creating the equation sheet with definitions and constants. The following class session, they used 1‐ Vernessa Edwards

only their prepared sheets to do an open note quiz. Two students commented that they liked the flipped classroom because it forced them to read and focus on the new material before I introduced the chapter in class. Pros and Cons Both methods were effective in engaging the students in a learning style different from my regular mode of teaching. The group exam created an environment where the students were able to help one another although it appeared that the top students did most of the work. In the flipped classroom, everyone did well on the quiz which indicated that they spent quality time before class reading the chapter. Also, I noticed an improvement in the exam grade that covered the material covered in Chapter 13. These two strategies were easy to implement. I will definitely use the flipped classroom again. I will probably use the group quiz next time as preparation for the Mid‐term exam.

FFLC #2 – Thompson

CETL FFLC Reflection Paper Spring 2017 I used multiple strategies in my different classes to see how each could work for the subject matter and materials presented. Because my classes seemed so different, I was not sure how each strategy would work for each class. I was initially interested in the flipped classroom and how to possibly make that work for my classes. I realizing after the start of the semester, it would seem impossible to incorporate something new such as a flipped classroom. I used the videos for remediation and reinforcement of topics in Math 110 (Finite Mathematics) and Math 112 (Precalculus). In my Math 100 (Developmental Mathematics), I did not introduce the topic and there was no in class lecture of the materials. In Math 101 (Fundamentals of Mathematics), I found it difficult to test any of the strategies in this class because it was my largest class with over 40 students most of the semester and it was a Tuesday/Thursday class so that made my time seem limited in what I could get done in just 2 days a week. I did try allowing this class to work in a group to complete a study guide. Math 112 – Flipped Classroom (27 students) This is the first class that I tried the flipped classroom. The majority of this class failed the midterm exam. So I allowed over a week to watch videos on the materials and take another test on Blackboard to help improve each grade. I stated to the class that I would give a grade for writing down the notes from the video. I emphasized that the videos would help if there was a lack of understanding from my lecture notes. This class set the standard that made me try it in other classes. To get credit for the video notes, there was a deadline after

FFLC #2 – Thompson

the make‐up test was given to submit for grading. Six people wrote the notes in his/her notebook. There were only 14 students that took advantage of the second chance to take this test. I sent an email after the test to the students that did not take advantage of this opportunity. Math 100 – Flipped Classroom (38 students) In this class, I assigned some video notes from the Khan Academy for each person to watch and copy into his/her notebook. I stated in class that the notes from the videos would not be covered as an in‐class lecture, but the objectives would on the test at the end of the unit. I posted the links on Blackboard and sent an email. I gave a homework assignment grade for having each example in their notebook. Nine out of 38 received credit for writing down the examples from the video (only 4 of those 9 had all the examples). I was told by several students that they watched the video but did not write anything down. We worked examples in class from the study guide before the test. In this class, this strategy was not as effective as I would have hoped. Math 110 –Flipped Classroom, Group work/Cooperative Learning, Real World Examples/Project (20 students) In this class I tried a variety of things because the size of the class allowed feedback in what was working for them as well as what was working for me. This was my first time teaching this class so I had little direction other than my lecture notes. I used the flipped classroom strategy when the majority of the class failed a test. I assigned video notes and additional practice because the same objectives were in the next chapter. After completing the next chapter, I suggested that they work together to complete the study guide. As the group worked each problem in

FFLC #2 – Thompson

class and agreed upon an answer, I provided the solution to the study guide. I did not intervene in the group discussion unless I heard an explanation of something that was not mathematically correct or if a correct answer could not be gotten every time. Because I completed the course outline and had time left at the end of the semester, I assigned a project for the remaining time before finals. It was a short assignment that involved some research from the last chapter covered on statistics. Each person could choose the topic that interest them most. I suggested that they work individually or in groups of two. Any more than two, needed to have my permission. I gave guidelines but had little participation in students completing the project to improve his/her grade. Four out of 20, completed the assignment. Math 101 – Cooperative Learning (39 students) In this class, I allowed them to work in groups to complete the study guide for an upcoming test. This could have worked better if the students were willing to get to know each other. Most of them wanted to work independently and ask me questions when they got stuck. I encouraged sharing knowledge (I believe they heard “shop for answers”) but this did not work as well as I expected.

“Study of the Application of selected teaching tools and a review of its impact on teaching General Chemistry” By Kamala Bhat, Ph.D. April 17, 2017 Reflections on the CETL Pedagogy/Teaching Strategy workshop series Teaching students in a new environment requires techniques that engage and keep their attention in class rather than on their electronic devices. Most important was how to engage student’s tech savvy students who have high goals but are not willing to put their commitment towards their own future. The workshop provided freshman instructor with a variety of tools to be tested in our own class and deliberate as to which technique would help increase student participation in class and aid in retention of concepts in a practical manner showing them its use in everyday life situations. At times students did get upset when I tried to relate concepts to everyday life for comparison- they would state they know that but were not able to connect the concepts with the idea being stated. (i) Building links to concepts as used in “The New Science of learning” by Terry Doyle and Todd Zakrajsek. Asking students to make links through the chapters just like using building blocks starting with the concept taught in the introduction and adding on other units as links. Once student got the idea they did try to interact in class ask questions and get involved with the learning and retention process. I thought this worked well as many students took initiatives to complete their homework problems and did try. (ii) I used the concept presented by Linda Woods, Department of English on How to ask effective questions in the classroom”. Build a story and interpret the results: By providing a leading thought provoking question- in the form of a complex problem, using concepts learnt in earlier sections to build the solution to get results. For this, a student was asked to come to the board on which a problem was written and other students to help the student to solve the problem by guiding him through question /answer sessions. This set up after initial hesitancy on the part of students, but suddenly some others got frustrated that the volunteer student was not getting what they were guiding him through stepped upasked to come to the board and wanted to be a part of the solution set up. Here I had already gone through the concepts and relations to terms in the requisite expression for problem solving. However, I did cover some contents, after the first solution many wanted to come to the board and we had a class solution setup- thus opening up the students to their own peer interactions.

1- BHAT

In conclusion, the series was really thought provoking and intellectually stimulating providing alternate methods for class- room instruction to keep students engaged in class. The application of many techniques requires greater amount of time- this means for freshman students there must be mandatory tutorial sessions in addition to class sessions- so that groups sessions can be conducted in which there would be one on one interaction between instructor and student. This would allow students to learn the necessary tools to achieve success. However, most methods work much better in smaller class settings, for large classes, which involve concept development, developing analytical techniques to apply for problem solving. There is a need for students to take time to assimilate what has been delivered in class. Help students to register courses as per their capacity to meet the individual demands of that courseresponsibility of advisor. Encourage students to take action as soon as they are falling behind (informed through “Grade First or difficulty in understanding concepts either through TAN or with instructor or through various department SI students. One suggestion to have some outsider come to class to give an in class instructor what needs to be improved / re-evaluated to allow students be successful in their class.

FRESHMAN FACULTY REFLECTION BY TERRY MILLER

I am pleased to note that most of the strategies mentioned during my attendance of the five CETL presentations are strategies that I have already tried or are currently implementing during my daily classroom instruction. The only difference is that I was so busy giving instruction, I never really looked at the impact that those strategies had on my students or the change/effect in their performance until after it was mentioned during the CETL workshops. I would particularly like to highlight and reflect on the “Flipped Classroom/Group Project” presentation. After listening to Dr. Sartor and looking at the handouts that he provided, I felt like this was very interesting and something that I would like to include in my classroom instruction. At the time, it seemed to be time consuming for me to record myself giving coding instruction, therefore, I opted out and selected several videos from YouTube explaining some of the current topics that we were discussing in class. After giving approximately 15 minutes of instruction and asking the students to view the short (2-4) minute videos that I posted, I put them in groups to work on some simple programming assignments related to the videos and my instruction. I purposely paired a strong student with a weaker student so I could actually see what type of interactions and dialogue would take place. After each group solved their problem, they had to go to the board and present it to the rest of the class (which caused additional learning because in order to teach, you have to know the content and what you are saying). Personally, I feel like this strategy was a huge success in my class for a number of reasons. Students had an opportunity to learn from a 2-3 video without having to always ask the professor. They had an opportunity to work with another student (who wasn’t as strong/weak as them) on a team causing each student to help augment where the other was weak. The students had an opportunity (as an entire class) to learn from their peers, during their presentation of their coding problem, resulting in group study sessions after class because the weaker students realized who “smart kids” were and decided that they wanted to learn from them. After I started doing that, I got a lot of feedback from students stating that they would like to do more group assignments, go to the board to work out coding problems and know where to find online videos related to the topic that is currently being discussed in the class. Personally, I feel that more students were successful in the class due to the strategy that was implemented. The final grades are much higher.

FRESHMAN FACULTY REFLECTION BY TERRY MILLER

Overall, I think the “Flipped Classroom/Group Project” presentation was the best fit for me because I was actually able to apply the concept to my class and actually see some positive results from it. I look forward to attending additional workshops that will help augment my teaching and the students learning.

Reflections of Implementing New Pedagogies: “Modeling Real World Examples to Increase Student Engagement” and “Increasing Student Engagement in the Classroom”-Dr. Padmaja Guggilla (Physics) I am teaching a Critical Thinking section of the Physical Science-1 (PHY101) in Spring2017 semester. I was very much interested in implementing the pedagogies “Modeling Real World Examples to Increase Student Engagement” by Dr. Charles Web from Depart of Mathematics, and “Increasing Student Engagement in the Classroom” by Dr. Antony Ricks from Department of English. Both the pedagogies seemed perfect for the kind of class I am teaching which deals with Critical Thinking. In my class room I need to engage the students to have their both mind and body present in their so that they can follow the instructions from me as an instructor and find the difference between implicit and explicit information provided. It was hard for me to make the students talk in the class and using Dr. Rick’s pedagogy of using the ice-breakers in the class to make them open up and feel comfortable in the class with me and with the fellow students. As an instructor I am very aware that individual students not only learn differently from others, but they also learn different kinds of content using different learning strategies. Having this in mind I started asking some scientific questions such as “When the earth is moving around the Sun and around itself why aren’t we feeling or seeing us moving though we are on the Earth?” Students used to wonder about it as this is the simple fact all the students know from may be 1st Grade but never thought about why we aren’t feeling that motion. After sequence of questions and answers they finally relate their movement sitting in the car on a bump free road and realize the concept behind why we don’t feel the motion of the earth. Similarly when calculating speed, acceleration, force and other physics concepts. After started practicing the mentioned pedagogies, student attendance rate increased and almost 90% of the class was present at all the time. Students were interested in attending the class and enjoy engaging themselves in learning process. Through continuous monitoring and statistical inference, a final conclusion can be drawn about the student learning outcomes. These pedagogies made students feel that he/she that they are in a familiar learning environment and are learning the concepts that are related to their daily life or real world problems. These two pedagogies should be definitely practiced by all the faculty members irrespective of the discipline as it is beneficial for the AAMU’s mission to increase the retention rate which is one of the great challenges our university is facing at this time. In conclusion, these two pedagogies not only helped my students’

attendance, performance in the tests but also their enthusiasm for learning; the key for their success.

Title: All Skate: Active Learning in the University Classroom January 31, 2017 Speaker: Derek Bruff, Ph.D. Director, Center for Teaching Senior Lecturer, Department of Mathematics Vanderbilt University Overview: How can we make the most of the relatively limited time we have with our students during class? Educational research is clear: engaging students in active learning in the classroom leads to improved learning outcomes over “continuous exposition by the teacher.” But what is active learning? Why does it work? And how can we engage all of our students in active learning during class? In this keynote, we’ll explore teaching strategies, learning principles, and digital technologies for creating active learning environments in our classrooms—and inviting all our students into deeper learning. Consultant write-up after Workshop: “This two-hour workshop was on the topic of active learning in the university classroom. Through a series of activities and short presentations, I helped the faculty members in attendance explore teaching strategies, learning principles, and digital technologies for engaging their students in active learning in the courses they teach. We finished the workshop with a Q&A period in which we discussed some of the more challenging aspects of active learning instruction.”

Give an example of 1 thing you have used from the workshop or webinar you attended the tips provided in Becoming a 360 Leader (Leadership Workshop) are being used at work place While interfacing with the students and the faculty; I have learned how to defuse difficult situations. This ability has been most beneficial in getting issues and problems resolved without escalating things. The New faculty orientation allowed me to became acquainted with all of the new faculty for the semester and their campus role. This new information allowed us to make contact to ensure faculty knew of the resources available via the LRC for teaching and learning. Webinar: How can I design critical thinking into my course? Assigning classwork/problems whereby the students could apply some of the critical thinking approaches in solving problems, analyzing the results and draw conclusions. The dealing with and understanding difficult people workshop has helped me understand while working with a variety of people their attitudes will conflict with mine. I have learned that everyone's approach to tasks are different. Some are more driven that others. Some just dont care if the customer service is good, bad or ugly. Some need to take it to the house. But all in all I have no control over anyone's behavior except my own. Critical Thinking Looking at the type of leader that I am and taking it as constructive criticism to sharpen area where I am weak in my leadership skills or continue with some actions that are considers qualities for a highly effective leader. We share anything we participate in that relate to critical thinking with the CT faculty who do not attend for some reason.

How did it change or enhance the environment of the office/classroom The office is more efficient and productive.

Liaison Librarians were aware of the new faculty in their academic assigned areas for contact and introduction. Also, the new information allowed for a smooth Lunch, Learn and Discover orientation for new faculty. Which was very well attended (12 new faculty members). Motivates the students more and opens up a chance to discuss about the problem with their class-mates The workshop helped me recognize differences in personalities and use those differences to my advantage. Allowed me to share with colleagues characteristics that they exhibit as "leader principles" as well as suggest ways to approach a situation in a classroom that we have been discussing. n/a

Please provide additional comments about the service CETL provides on AAMU campus Enjoy these opportunities for professional development and job enhancement. Please continue these efforts. CETL services are most valued and supports the faculty and staff enhancement of skills is almost every area. I would like to suggest about the time: If the training is scheduled during lunch time, I believe more faculty and staff will attend TBD I think it should be made MANDATORY for faculty AND staff to attend two CETL workshops per semester.

Give an example of 1 thing you have used from the workshop or webinar you attended Excel charts Not taking the response of a co-worker or supervisor personally. Everyone has a different personality and expresses themselves uniquely. Changing of my questioning process when helping customers. Different teaching strategies, like group work I have use the information for the Excel sessions. I used the group learning strategy as well as the flipped classroom. Both gave good results. It has enhanced my skill set in Excel spreadsheet production and manipulation. Flipped classroom by Ken Sartor Flipped Classroom All info obtained was used. Techniques for handling difficult customers. N/A How to better facilitate online learning. Customer Service: I pay closer attention to how I disseminate information based on the method of communication to improve my customer service. Flipped classroom From the webinar of developing rubrics - Reassessed grading rubric for ENG 101 and redesigned a discussion post rubric for online assignments. Real world examples in courses... in all courses! Smile when answering the phone. Customer Service... Collaborative techniques in the classroom so that all students felt inclusive. Students were comfortable elaborating on subject matters discussed in the classroom. Flipped Classroom by Dr. Sartor I selected a couple of five minute videos from YouTube about a topic we were discussing in class. After a brief discussion, the students watched the videos and then they were asked to complete some simple problems related to the topic usjngbwhat they watched in the video and what was discussed in class. It improved a lot the environment of the classroom. I can do a data base and create files that will help with the maintenance concerns. More students were actively engaged in problem solving when we did the group quiz. Where I normally lecture and solve problems on the board, the students had to work in small groups and solve the problems together. I am able to get more done because I am not continuously recreating the document. Students began to dialogue with each other and become engaged about the topic that we were discussing. Gave some students a better understanding because (s)he could replay the videos as often as needed It made that individual incident have a better outcome. N/A It helped to present information online better and increase student learning outcomes for the course. It is assisting me in strengthening and/or pursuing different relationships with my staff and colleagues. Increased student engagement Assisted in making g the requirements and what was being assessed clearer. Immensely. New outlook. More enthusiasm. Relevance. I have no idea. I laugh any way. It caused people within the department to relax These techniques provided more of an active learning environment. I noticed that students were able to get a better grasp of the concept after they watched a visual of what I was lecturing about. Increased student interest in learning complicated concepts

What other topics would you like CETL to offer N/A Improving computer skills Team-based learning Student motivation. How to motivate and teach unprepared students. Because math is such a challenge for our students, I would like to learn more about best practices for improving math skills in STEM diciplines other than the math classroom. Continued expertise in the usage of Microsoft Office suite (OneNote and Outlook). I need to give it more thought Study, organizational, and test taking skills in Mathematics Any workshops that enhance departmental cooperation or joint effort collaborative department cooperation. Help your students see and believe that the power and ability to adapt, change, and improve their learning strategies is within their grasp. 6. Promote revision as an opportunity to master both topic knowledge and writing skills.

You could also

consider establishing peer-review groups to facilitate the revision process; this also has the benefit of eliminating the need for you to read and evaluate each draft of every student’s paper yourself. 7.

Use a criterion-referenced approach to grading,

rather than grading “on the curve.”

If your expecta-

tions, criteria (and point values) for assignments, and desired learning outcomes are clear to students from the start of the course, they will know exactly what leads to success and can thus feel more confident

about the possibility of succeeding. 8. Eliminate some of the “guesswork” from tests. Keep the format and structure of your exams consistent from test to test, so that students can become more familiar with (and thus less anxious about) your approach to testing. 9. If most students miss a question on a test, don’t be

afraid to “drop” it. Instead of accounting for that question in the overall grade on the exam, use the occurrence as an opportunity to re-address the topic and confirm that your

students understand the material. By doing so, students can recognize that you are concerned not only about their performance, but their mastery of what you’re covering in class.

10. Keep your feedback constructive and informative. Provide criticism in a manner that frames problems as something that can be addressed and resolved, rather than

as something that’s intrinsically wrong with the student.

Five Time-Saving Strategies for the Flipped Classroom

times. Building these types of margins into your lesson plan will help you stay in

https://www.facultyfocus.com/articles/blended -flipped-learning/five-time-saving-strategiesflipped-classroom/ This particular podcast focused on how to “create margins” in life to reduce stress and avoid burnout. Quoting Dr. Richard Swenson’s work, Hyatt defines a margin as “the space between our load and our limits. It is the amount allowed beyond that which is needed. . . . Margin is the gap between rest and exhaustion. . . . Margin is the opposite of overload.” 

Find flippable moments. The fir st way to save time is to step back from a course and identify its flippable moments; this will help you choose what, when, and how to flip. You will know where to focus your time and energy so you and your students can avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Make small changes. Star t by r eviewing your learning outcomes for clarity and purpose. Then try one flipped strategy during the lesson. If you’re just beginning, start with a simple, two-minute “think, pair, share” to see how it feels. things students have to learn to do.

Build margins into the lesson plan. If

control and avoid getting overly stressed in a dynamic learning environment. 

Do less, accomplish more. This is

probably the best way to describe the power of the flipped classroom. Sometimes we think we have to “cover” everything on a syllabus. We have to assign more homework, require more reading, add more writing, work more problems, and give more examples. Such

overload is the opposite of margin. When it comes to the flipped classroom model, you don’t have to use a new flipped approach every single day for every single class.

Ten Tips for Motivating Students By: Tami Strang February 17, 2014 https://blog.cengage.com/ten-tips-for-motivatingstudents/ Yes, students are responsible for keeping up their own motivation. However, there are ways that you can help them build their enthusiasm and stay focused on their success.

1. Allow students some degree of choice and control. For example, if you assign a paper or research project, you could provide a list of potential topics and let them choose from among those topics. 2. Show your enthusiasm for the subject and your students. Let students know how teaching and research motivate you. When you demonstrate your passion for your subject, as well as your sincere concern for your students, students are more likely to become enthusiastic about your course as well. 3. Make class a “can’t-miss” experience. If you engage your students through dynamic lectures, interactive activities, and lively class discussions, they’ll be less likely to assume that they can get what they need solely from the readings or their study buddies’ class notes. 4. Teach with purpose. Clearly communicate the value of what you’re teaching and ensure that you’re reinforcing the relevance of course material to their lives.

The goal of the CETL is to support AAMU faculty and staff in enabling a quality educational experience for today’s technically savvy AAMU students. The pedagogically-themed professional development learning communities, seminars, and workshops offered by CETL are designed through today’s college students’ lens of learning. Programs for 2017-2018 will emphasize how using technology and social media can aid faculty in promoting deeper learning and understanding with an emphasize on the demographics of AAMU students. Also for this Academic Year, the professional development seminars, workshops, and learning commu-

I encourage you to take some time away from your busy schedules to participate in the current professional development activities offered by CETL. For new faculty, there are presentations about quick and simple active learning techniques that you can adopt in your classes. Furthermore, CETL has added additional books and cutting–edge digital tools to its library. You are encouraged to stop by and visit the CETL library and check out the available books and digital tools. For senior faculty, you will find that the professional development workshops offered by CETL provide information and references about new methods to keep your teaching fresh and that will invigorate today’s AAMU students.

Cont. I am excited about the significant new trends that are emerging in online learning that impact our continuing and professional education and development programs. To continue to help our faculty and staff benefit from these trends, CETL will continue to incorporate an online professional development compendium, called “Go2Knowledge,” and “Monday Morning Mentor” to complement its face-to-face offerings for faculty and staff. We encourage all freshman and senior faculty and staff to take advantage of the professional develop-

ment opportunities afforded them by participating in the CETL face-to-face and online workshops. Finally, the professional faculty development activities, benefit all faculty, regardless of their learned discipline. Similarly, the professional development activities for staff benefit all staff across the AAMU organizational units. I look forward to your participation in the many professional development activities offered by CETL. I am proud and honored to serve with professionals like you and I want to take this opportunity to say two simple words for all you do for our students, “Thank You!”

I close with this quote from the Greatest, Muhammad Ali, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a Champion.” Again, welcome to the 2017-2018 academic year! Very Respectfully, Pamela G. Arrington

Freshman Faculty Learning Community (FFLC) 2016-2017 The Freshman Faculty Learning Community has celebrated the advancement of the first cohort through the Learning Community Workshop! The second cohort had the advantage to learn from and engage with the first cohort on valuable lessons of teaching strategies implemented and classroom effectiveness that are sure to become etched in the minds of those faculty members who participated. The first and second cohorts were able to implement a variety of student learning techniques and effective teaching modalities that will certainly add to the overall collegiate experience of our freshman student body.

Volume

One of the main highlights from the Freshman Faculty Learning Community (FFLC) 20152017 was a group discussion of “What is Your Teaching Style? 5 Effective Teaching Methods for Your Classroom?” The discussion revealed that most of the faculties utilize these top three teaching styles and strategies the most:

(1) Hybrid or blended style (2) Facilitator or activity style and (3) Authority or lecture style.

Here are a few reflections from the faculty: “The FFLC workshop has made me change my way of teaching. It has given me direction in terms of trying to find ways to agitate student learning and engage in and with them in the learning process.”

“This FFLC meetings were very productive, useful and helpful to be well equipped to teach underprepared or unprepared new millennia students. These kinds of workshop and meetings are very helpful and beneficial for not only young faculty members but also experienced Faculty members to share and improve our teaching skills and guide our freshman students’ best possible ways.”

“I had to learn to be much more aware of the cultural and generational differences that impact the student learning experience at Alabama A&M. I feel that the two years I have spent in this program have definitely set me on the right path, both in my ability to implement strategies that will benefit all learners and in becoming much more aware of the unique challenges of incoming freshman students at Alabama A&M.”

Volume

Cont. “Although I believe addressing psychological needs is more important, the teaching methods I implemented had a clear positive effect. I used active learning / cooperative learning exercises in most of my classes this past year. The students seemed more engaged during class, and some formed study groups to practice outside of class. I believe that active learning is more effective than traditional lecture classes…” A second highlight from both cohorts was a summer Webinar via Skype with Dr. Todd Zakrajsek to discuss teaching pedagogies from his book “The New Science of Learning.” The overall consensus was that there is a paradigm shift in the notion of teaching the “new college age” student thus this perpetuates the “new age” college faculty to adapt and adjust to the way of teaching. Some of the highlights were familiar to most faculty which are that students need rest and exercise, as well as faculty. Faculties need to become even more attentive to the type of learners in our classrooms today and finally, he says, “Only when you practice, read, write, think, talk, collaborate, and reflect does the brain

make permanent connections.” The Centers for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) will continue the learning communities with the upcoming recruitment of the third Freshman Faculty Learning Community (FFLC) cohort. We are certainly excited about the impetus of the FFLC and are equally excited that many of these learning strategies and teaching styles are found in the faculty professional development offered on a regular basis. Our faculty professional development is On-Demand Professional Development Training called Go2Knowledge. “Go2Knowledge meets the professional development needs of busy and distracted educators. The trainings provide a customized, straight-forward, and easy way for our college faculty and staff to find webinars of importance to them. The Go2Knowledge trainings allow us to schedule professional development opportunities at the convenience of our faculty and staff.”

Community of Learners for Administrative Support Staff (CLASS) 2016-2017 During the spring session of 2016, CETL decided to create a community of learners for the administrative support staff. During each semester there were workshops conducted to enhance the effectiveness of staff members both professionally and personally. These workshops were conducted under the auspices of the Centers for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). The topics that were covered varied from “How to dress professionally” to “How to use technology to make your jobs easier”. Each semester, one workshop was held every third Wednesday of the month, where a different topic was covered. The participants always walked away with helpful tips to help enhance what they do here at Alabama A&M University.

Faculty Appointments (Section 3.2 Faculty Handbook) All faculty members will receive one of the following appointments upon employment at the University:

A. Regular Full Time: Employment of an unspecified duration with no predetermined separation date. Fulltime appointments with an annual assignment of fifty percent (50%) or more in an instructional program are eligible for tenure. B. Regular Part Time: Employment that is expected to continue indefinitely on a part-time basis. Employees are expected to work at least 20 hours but less than 35 hours per week and are not eligible to receive fringe benefits. C. Temporary: Employment on an as needed basis.

Joint appointments are those appointments between/among academic units and other units of the University.

The holders of such appointments whose basic or initial assignments are with the instructional program may be considered for tenure if the instructional assignment is at least fifty percent (50%).

Part-time faculty appointments, such as adjunct faculty, are those individuals who are employed less than 100% of the time by the University. The total number of part time faculty for each academic unit will normally not exceed fifteen percent (15%) of the total instructional full-time faculty. These individuals are not eligible for faculty benefits. All administrative, untenured faculty, and non-tenured faculty appointments whether categorized as regular full-time, regular part-time, temporary, or otherwise may be ended by action of the employee or the University, with or without cause.

Dr. Annie Payton, Director, LRC and State Black Archives (256) 372-5401 Currently, the Learning Resources Center (LRC) has over 55 electronic resource subscriptions databases that patrons can access from anywhere on campus as well as remote locations. From on campus, patrons can go to the University‘s website, move the cursor over the word Library and select Databases from the drop down menu list.

In order to access from remote locations, one must have a valid Outlook or Gmail account plus a valid password. Patrons should contact the Information Technology (IT) department to receive such authorization at (256) 372-5993. Every academic library strives to ensure that services offered are fully utilized. The LRC, however, needs the support of faculty to encourage their students to utilize our electronic resource subscription databases. Also, LRC staff asks that faculty accompany their students to the library to see what services are offered. The LRC faculty is also exploring different avenues to increase student involvement in using library resources. The embedded librarian is a novel concept that has been adopted

Public Safety Website: http://www.aamu.edu/administrativeoffices/publicsafety/pages/default.aspx

Welcome to “THE HILL” where service is sovereignty! The Public Safety Department (PSD) exists to pro-

vide quality service derived from the expectations of the Alabama A&M community and our own dedication to excellence. Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of the students, faculty, staff, and visitors at Alabama A&M University. Although the Department of Public Safety is the primary department at the University charged with creating a safe and secure environment, this task is not one that can accomplish alone. Crime prevention, risk identification, and problem solving are the responsibilities of everyone on this campus. Efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment rely on the PSD’s ability to develop

collaborative relationships with the

many communities that make up the University. PSD believes that through partnering and problem solving, Alabama A&M will be one of the safest universities in the nation. The use of strategies, based on a commitment to the philosophy of community and problem-solving policing, began last year and has already reaped tremendous benefits. Some of these successes can be found on the Public Safety webpage and in the Annual Security and Fire Report. The PSD will soon introduce more proactive strategies and programs that will increase community engagement efforts and enhance the quality of life at A&M. PSD asks everyone to join them in safety efforts by becoming informed and using good judgment because PSD wants your experiences on “The Hill” to be rewarding, fun, and safe.

Please do not hesitate to contact the PSD, (256) 372-5555–they are here to serve you!
