The Garden Music Concert Series is deigned to celebrate the rich diversity of artistic styles and cultural backgrounds in our place and time. Each program is from a different world with a unique voice and narrative.
July 29 “Mozart Divertimento”
Thompson House, Carbondale Imagine meandering into an 18th century garden, and amongst the fragrance is the most delightful music. Each movement of this Mozart masterpiece will be paired up with a reading inspired by nature. In the space adorned with garden beauty, some plein-air artists will share their expression through palettes. Performers: MinTze Wu (violin), Jay Yiu (viola), Michael Graham (cello) with narration by Jem Moore.
August 18-19 “Death of the Pugilist”
The Orchard Gathering Center, Carbondale An experimental ensemble piece based on contemporary American novelist Daniel Mason’s story of the same name. A narrator tells the story in its unedited entirety and five musicians weave the emotional tapestry with music. From the quayside docks, to taverns of low-repute, and the squalor of family life in the working class, the narrative follows a young man as he comes of age in a roughand-tumble profession, and an actual boxing event that took place in the 1800’s England. Settling on modern, minimalistic music to emphasize the objectiveness of the story teller, Bach as the point/counterpoint inherent in boxing, and Irish folk music to set the tone for the time period, the production creates something greater than the whole of its parts, a moving, emotionally rapt work that is truly unique. Performers: Jem Moore (narrator & musician) MinTze Wu (violin), Eric Thorin (musician), Joy Adams (musician), Blayne Chastain (musician).
