FORM, STRUCTURE, SPACE children’s marionette theatre pavillion in the village museum of cluj FORMA, STRUCTURA, SPATIU teatru de papusi in muzeul satului din cluj ARCHITECTURE STUDIO team project – with roxana marcean
theme The exercise aims at developing a project approach based on the choice of a site and at creating a concept using studies on scale models and sketches. The implementation of a volume in a certain environment is studied through the establishment of a relationship between the two. The construction that results, with a temporary character, may, therefore, express itself spatially in a different way than utilising the formulas established for permanent buildings, thus supporting a manifest and experimental character. The pavilion type space that results, with a size varying between 20 and 100 square meters, will receive a generic function destined for public use. concept Placed on an empty space within the museum village of Cluj, the proposal seeks to emphasize the continuity between the ethnographic tradition and modernity, at once, by the functions’ choice – marionette theatre and then, by combining elements of traditional architecture inspiration (porches, shutters) with typically up-to-date ones (asymmetrical volume cutouts, translucent materials, lighting effects). I have considered important the fact that the pavilion addresses a neglected cathegory of museum visitors – children, who have thereby the possibility to understand and assimilate different cultural elements. At the same time, I wanted to transpose spatially the typical multifunctionality for this kind of space by the possibility of arranging the construction in various ways.

“Following the instructions left by those who have recorded in writing, for the first time in our country, the texts of puppet shows (G.D.Teodorescu, D.C.Olanescu, T.T.Burada) we can reconstruct how such a show looked like in the second half of the last century . The performance took place in the house where, before starting, the puppeteer addressed the assistance with the question: “With or without a veil? In the street or in the court? “ Then he put the chest on two chairs, sat down behind it and, looking in through a crack, played the puppets on the small stage. “ History of theater in Romania, Volume I, ed. G.Oprescu, Ed. Academiei RSR, Bucureşti, 1965, p. 121

theme In the first phase, the intention is to elaborate an urban planning and architectural concept study that highlights the features of the urban territory. In the second phase, one of the possible locations is chosen for an office building which should include public spaces, functional office modules and annexes, where providing functional flexibility is considered fundamental. concept After a thorough analysis, I proposed the completion of the 1910’s block with an architectural solution that respects volumetric typologies in the area and achieves an equilibrium at compositional level, by reinterpreting the defining elements of the monument building adjacent on the west side (corner tower, proportions of story heights, full-empty ratio), and by creating a connection with the buildings on the eastern front (through withdrawals and cutouts that should emphasize the surprising perspectives). In addition to the idea of indoor-outdoor continuity, supported by the arrangement of the internal courtyard and of the terraces, as well as by the transparency of the building’s shell, I tried to bring some new elements - the “green” facades - that are to include the building in the category of energy efficient constructions and to contribute to the creation of a clear identity of the building, without aggressing in any way the historical context. details The green façade system is inspired by existing similar ones, and works by re-circulating the rainwater collected in tanks, through a network of installations applied on the skeleton of the curtain façade, so that the entire structure will allow an adjustment of the quantity of light entering the interior. As annual plant species will be used, there will be a correlation between the moment of their maximum growth and the sunlight intensity (as the green facades are located in areas with south and southeast orientation), minimizing the greenhouse effect and favoring natural ventilation.
theme The student has to perform a study-project for the rehabilitation and extension of an existing historical building that is placed in the second historical enclosure of the city of Cluj. The U-shaped construction surrounds a private interior courtyard and has an uneven height regime. Its planimetric development has evolved in time, so one can perceive sections that belong to different historical stages. At the moment, it houses various functions. Based on data provided by the existing survey and the known history of the edifice, in a first phase, the student has to elaborate a diagnostic study that accurately describes its current state. The second phase implies a horizontal and vertical expanding of the building, carefully highlighting the historical ensemble.

MASTER THESIS LUCRARE DE DIPLOMA ARCHITECTURE STUDIO
scoaˡa popuˡara de arte si ⅿeserii
public arts and crafts school in cluj scoala populara de arte si meserii in cluj individual project
theme The first part of the final project refers to the establishment and definition of the theme and of the architecture program, the choice and study of two sites and finally, to the proposal of two architecture solutions with different levels of detail - one for each site, with a focus on the concept. general concept In the master thesis paper “Culture and Power - from more public art education institutions to collaborative urban planning”, I have studied the relationship between knowledge and the ability to actively intervene in the building of the surroundings, using “The People’s School of Arts and Crafts” as a tool to disseminate the information - a flexible concept with a fairly long history in Romania. I considered that through its character, both organized and free, as well as through its strong impact on a large and diverse audience, the PSAC is an essential element in the formation of a society with a high cultural level, who wants and can claim to participate in the planning and urban development process. In search of a solution to re-implement it in Cluj, I based the general concept on the observation that most cultural facilities are clustered in the city center, combined with the idea that popular art schools serve large areas and diverse social environments. Therefore, I considered that locations suitable for this function are rather found in the periphery, where they can also function as community centers. On the other hand, the adaptability of the school curriculum and its multilateral orientation, together with the existence of several areas that lack a space for artistic or vocational activities, have inspired the idea of a network of such institutions. Thus, there is a central core that grows according to the demand of artistic activities at the city’s level. At the same time with the phased expansion of the nucleus, a change in the surroundings is entailed, according to the existing natural elements (soil and water purification, vegetation care). As the flux of the school may increase or decrease, it will change the function of its spaces, so the cultural center character can be maintained even when the occupied area diminishes. In the same time, this model is expanded to the other neighborhoods where it is needed. Each of these centers may cover all the directions of the parent school curriculum, or only some of them, depending on the dominant preoccupation in the area.
