2012 DCA Juried Design Communication Exhibition Š 2012 Design Communication Association Hosted by the School of Architecture at Oklahoma State University, October 21-24, 2012. Henry Sorenson Jr., Exhibition Coordinator Steven Juroszek, Exhibition Booklet Design/Layout Moh’d Bilbeisi, Conference Chair

The Design Communication Association hosts a Juried Design Communication Exhibition in conjunction with its biennial conference. The goal of this exhibition is to celebrate design communication and its relationship with design in as many varieties as possible, from quick sketches to elaborate presentations, with an emphasis on visual imagery. Submissions were accepted in six different categories: Observational Drawing Category • Observational Drawings—Undergraduate Student • Observational Drawings—Graduate Student • Observational Drawings—Faculty The primary content of observational drawings must be in existence at the time the image was created. Drawings may be in any media and format. Examples include travel sketches, measured drawings, building portraits or detail studies. Design Image Category • Design Images—Undergraduate Student • Design Images—Graduate Student • Design Images—Faculty The primary content of design images must be unbuilt at the time the image was created. Images may be any media or format, and may include animations or interactive media. Image examples include design sketches, renderings, presentations or diagrams. There were 164 entries submitted in all six categories, and each submission was blind reviewed by a distinguished panel of jurors. As a result of this review, 63 submissions were accepted for inclusion in the 2012 DCA Juried Design Communication Exhibition and are show on the following pages. Best of Category Awards were given in each of the six categories and each juror selected one submission from any category to receive special distinction through their juror’s award.

The jury consisted of three distinguished architects, illustrators and educators: Bill Hook is a registered architect and an internationally respected architectural illustrator. After graduation from the University of Illinois, he practiced architecture in Chicago and then Seattle where he founded his own firm, W.G.Hook Architectural Illustration, in 1986. He is best known for his transparent watercolors and his black and white pencil illustrations. His work has been featured in a wide range of national publications. He is a Past President of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators and the recipient of the Sketch (Informal) Category Award a well as numerous Awards of Excellence from that society’s Architecture in Perspective Competition—including this year’s. His extensive experience ranges from international competitions, new cities, major corporation and university campuses, to large scale permanent museum installations. He has recently focused more attention towards his passion for fine art and is garnered a growing international reputation for excellence in the fine art community for his expertise with watercolor. Anna Loseva is a professional artist with an international exhibition record; her work is represented in multiple public and private collections. Anna graduated, summa cum laude, with a Master’s degree from the elite St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. She then completed a three-year Ph.D. level fellowship at the Creative Studio for Outstanding Young Artists and became a member of the faculty at the Academy, teaching drawing, painting and visual presentation to architecture students. Anna subsequently moved to Canada, where she received a second Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary. For three years she taught painting and drawing at Red Deer College in Alberta, before moving to Philadelphia, where she co-founded ArtandDesignStudios.com. In the 12 years since its inception, ArtandDesignStudios.com has won 10 annual awards from the American Society of Architectural Illustrators. In 2010 it received international acclaim with the release of Fabio Schillaci’s “Architectural Renderings-Construction and Design Manual” which was published in Germany and features 14 by-invitation-only architectural illustration practices from around the world. Paul Stevenson Oles . Steve Oles is a practicing architect, teacher and architectural visualist. A graduate of Texas Tech and Yale Universities, he has taught at RISD, Yale, MIT and Harvard, where he was a Loeb Fellow in 1982. The following year he received an AlA Institute Honor for his work in design illustration. He is a co-founder of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators, and the author of two major books on drawing. In 1989 he was advanced to the AlA College of Fellows, which cited him as the “Dean of architectural illustrators in America”. In addition to his work in illustration, he has been since 1971 the principal of his own architectural firm, Interface Architects, which has been responsible for the design and construction of projects in the fields of housing for the elderly, energy-efficient residential design and bridge design-all were commissions won in regional competitions. His most recently completed projects are two residences in Santa Fe, New Mexico--the latest, completed in 2011, a home for himself and his family.
