2014 Design Communication Association Biannual Juried Exhibition

The Design Communication Association hosts a Juried Design Communication Exhibition in conjunction with its biennial conference. The goal of this exhibition is to celebrate design communication and its relationship with design in as many varieties as possible, from quick sketches to elaborate presentations, with an emphasis on visual imagery. Submissions were accepted in eight different categories: Observational Drawing Category • Foundations • Undergraduate Student • Graduate Student • Faculty The primary content of observational drawings must be in existence at the time the image was created. Drawings may be in any media and format. Examples include travel sketches, measured drawings, building portraits or detail studies. Design Drawing/Image Category • Foundations • Undergraduate Student • Graduate Student • Faculty The primary content of design images must be unbuilt at the time the image was created. Images may be any media or format, and may include animations or interactive media. Image examples include design sketches, renderings, presentations or diagrams. There were 203 entries submitted in all (8) categories, and each submission was blind reviewed by a distinguished panel of jurors. As a result of this review, 84 submissions were accepted for inclusion in the 2014 Design Communication Association Biannual Juried Exhibition and are illustrated on the following pages. Best of Category Awards were given in each of the (8) categories and each juror selected one submission from any category to receive special distinction through their juror’s award. Additionally, a consensus from the jurors determined the top award from all entries, the William Kirby Lockard Prize.

2014 DCA Biannual Exhibition Jury

The jury consisted of three distinguished architects, illustrators and educators: Eric Brightfield From 1988 to 1997, Eric Brightfield was the Director of Graphic Design at Holabird & Root; responsible for all firm presentations and design of environmental graphics for all architectural projects. After this experience, Eric founded ImageFiction, a complete visualization company offering computer renderings, 3D product visuals and virtual reality animation. It is a studio of artists, animators and visionaries with a common goal of providing successful 3D/2D solutions to the architectural and real estate development communities. Eric is responsible for overseeing all 2D projects from conception to completion, still photography and overall creative collaboration with clients and artists. He had also become President Emeritus from 2006 to 2009 of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators. Eric earned a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute with an emphasis in painting, graphic design, and illustration. Elizabeth Day With both technical and creative interests, and a BFA in studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin, Elizabeth began her career as an architectural artist at Jessen Associates, her father’s architectural firm. The hefty Architectural Graphics Standards in the firm’s library had some very complete diagrams of perspective layouts which she studied, along with a copy of Frank Ching’s books on perspective. In the time found between specification drawings and proposal covers she practiced perspective construction. Elizabeth Day has evolved into one of the world’s foremost architectural artists, providing presentation drawings for architects, engineers, developers, non-profit organizations and homeowners worldwide. Long before many architects had in-house 3-D modeling capabilities, she enjoyed being involved at the early stages of a project in order to offer visual feedback to the design team. That interest has transmuted into the offering of an enhanced choice of views of the scene. This stems from a thorough understanding of the laws of perspective, view selection criteria, composition, and the principles of visual perception. Robert Frank Robert Frank is not just another architectural illustrator. His extensive experience helped him to develop an illustration technique that combines his talents at hand drawing with the latest advances in digital imaging. This unique process allows him to work alongside clients and update the images as the project progresses, yet provide an end product that has the look and feel of traditional media. Architects and developers are continually impressed with the responsiveness and distinctive contributions of Robert’s illustrations. Robert received his degree in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. He is a past president of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators. Robert is also an instructor at the Academy of Art University.

William Kirby Lockard Prize In 2012, the Best of Show Award for the Design Communication Association Juried Drawing Exhibition was renamed the William Kirby Lockard Prize to remember and honor Kirby Lockardâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;one of the founders of the Design Communication Association. His vision for this organization, his passion for teaching design drawing and his compassion for all have been guiding values and inspiration for the Design Communication Association since its beginning.
