SELECTED INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Cutting and Sawing
WHEN LACQUERING OR WAXING, YOU SHOULD OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING GENERAL PROCEDURES:
• All standard saws can be used (horizontal or vertical cut-to-size saws as well as standard circular saw benches and circular hand saws).
Lacquering (particularly on edges) A thorough insulating coat can prevent later cracks in the lacquer on the edges and on the board surface.
Shaping and Profiling
We recommend that you repeat the procedure after sanding. Two-component products from all well-known
• TOPAN® MDF is ideal for profiling board edges and surfaces.
lacquer manufacturers can be used.
Drilling
Priming Priming follows after sanding down the insulation coat. With high-quality surfaces, priming should be repeated
• The same tools for processing solid wood, plywood and chipboard can be used.
Screwing • A pilot hole is recommended to prevent the board from splitting. • The best results are achieved with a bore diameter that corresponds with the core diameter of the screw thread. • Observe a minimum distance of 20 mm from the board edge when fitting a screw into the board. • When fitting a screw into the board edge, you should observe a minimum distance of 70 mm from the corner of
after additional sanding.
Top coat of lacquer After sanding the prime coat, the top coat of lacquer can be applied in a criss-cross pattern. Numerous lacquers are suitable for use with TOPAN® MDF. The lacquer manufacturer’s instructions must be observed.
the board and keep an interval of minimum 30 mm between screws. Waxing Gluing and Bonding • All commercially available wood glues and adhesives are suitable for use with TOPAN® MDF. • Glue quantities of between 80 and 120 g/m2 are sufficient as the surface layer is extremely compact.
Apply waxes and oils thinly and uniformly with a cotton cloth or balls of cloth, and rub down evenly – otherwise there is the risk of blotching. Numerous waxes and oils are suitable for use with TOPAN® MDF. Please observe the manufacturer’s instructions! The wax manufacturer’s instructions must be observed!
Sanding and Planing (particularly TOPAN® MDF Colour) • TOPAN® MDF is supplied by the manufacturer with a sanded finish of 120 (grain size). • For very high quality demands, such as e.g. lacquering, the boards should be pre-sanded with a grain size of 150 and re-sanded with 180 or 220 grain size.
USE AND CARE: • TOPAN® MDF is only suitable for interior use. • Do not subject TOPAN® MDF to direct splashing, e. g. in the shower.
BEFORE LACQUERING AND WAXING (particularly TOPAN® MDF Colour)
• Untreated (raw) MDF should only be cleaned with a dry cloth.
The following must be observed:
• Please do not use scouring agents.
• Treated (lacquered) MDF can also be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth.
• Before use, check for any colour deviations, even between both sides of the MDF boards. In this case, the sides should not be mixed up during machining. Colour deviations can still occur between different production batches and thicknesses. This is unavoidable for production-technical reasons.
WASTE DISPOSAL:
• Despite the light-fast pigment preparations used, direct sunlight can cause discolouration of the grains. • Avoid sharp edges – chamfer edges if possible. General information concerning lacquering and waxing: • A coat of lacquer or suitable waxing reduces the risk of discolouration through light when appropriate UV blockers are used/added – please contact your lacquer supplier. • All commercially available lacquers and waxes suitable for MDF can be used.
• TOPAN® MDF is free of halogen or organic halogen compounds. Wood preservatives such as PCP, organic chlorine biocides, pyrethroids and dioxins are not added to our wood-based materials. • TOPAN® MDF board residues can be incinerated in Germany according to the 1st and 4th ordinance (BlmSchV) for the implementation of the German Federal Immission Control Act, as it is standard fuel according to § 3, paragraph 1 no 7 of TA Luft (Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control).
• Heavy dilution, a small proportion of solid particles and/or too small a quantity applied can have a negative effect on the result. • Before lacquering, ensure that the surface is completely free of grease, silicone and dust. • You should generally carry out a trial using the lacquer on the board material to be used. • The best results are achieved by applying lacquer in a criss-cross pattern.
