A Timeless Transformation

Homeowners should consider a tile roof for many reasons: durability, aesthetics, historic preservation, personal preference, environmentally friendly, the list goes on. Most importantly, serviceability. St. Louis, especially, experiences extreme weather conditions in all four seasons—hot summers, cold winters, rainy springs and unpredictable falls—in addition to freeze-thaw cycles and drastic temperature changes within hours. Clay tile roofs are timeless and stand up to extreme weather unlike any other.

Picture Perfect

A roof can be the architectural focal point of a home and can draw attention like no other exterior feature. We have had the honor of installing pictureperfect roofs on some of the finest, most elegant homes in St. Louis. They add beauty, charm, character, emotion and fascination. Tile roofs relate

to a number of different architectural styles and can create impressions of an old English village, an Italian countryside or a Mediterranean seaside villa. A tile roof can be the finishing touch on a masterpiece.

Dirt, Heat and Love!

We install natural slate and clay tile roofs. While each style differs in several ways—installation details, colors, profiles, components, etc.—hard surface roof systems are similar in the sense that they last a lifetime. In addition, both natural slate and clay tile come from the earth. Natural slate is quarried stone, continuously trimmed to ultimately create roofing slate. Clay tile is created from a process of combining natural clay, dirt, heat and love!

Breaking Tradition

Strong Foundation

Unfortunately, tile roofs do not work on every home. Tile roofs range anywhere from 600 lbs to 2,000 lbs per square (6 lbs to 20 lbs per square foot). The rafter and sheathing components must be built to withstand the additional weight. For comparison, standard three-tab shingles weigh approximately 200 lbs per square.

Built to Last

Clay tile roofs can easily exceed 100 years. That said, many factors determine life expectancy of a tile roof: geographic location, roof pitch, underlayment and flashing, to name a few. However, the two most critical details of any roof are proper installation and general maintenance. I recommend annual or biennial inspections, which we offer free of charge.

Eco-friendly Longevity

Slate and tile roofs have many advantages. Longevity, aesthetics, cost and environmentally friendly materials are all benefits to these types of roofs. Natural slate and clay tile roofs are green, fire resistant and free of harmful and synthetic ingredients. Coming in countless combinations of size, profile and color, these roofs provide homeowners a multitude of design options while also acting as natural insulators. These roofs also commonly last five times longer than asphalt shingles which translates to less waste in landfills than most other roofing materials. BLAST FROM THE PAST

Gina Berg resurrects old furniture, transforming them into beautiful statement pieces.

What was once old is now new again. It’s an expression easily applied to what Gina Berg, furniture refinisher and vintage curator, does when she transforms dinged up, timeworn or nearly broken furniture. To find the pieces, she scours Facebook Marketplace or estate and garage sales. Other times, people simply surrender to her the odd buffet, tumbledown dresser or lackluster nightstand, knowing

Gina will provide the item with a new lease on life, so much so, that the resulting piece feels like new again.

For rehabbing her pieces, Gina’s creative process can entail many different things. Sometimes she adds new legs to a piece, repairs drawers and tabletops, retouches wood varnish, chooses new modern hardware or divines the best paint and wood combos. “I try to mix it up and think about

where woodwork would look best on the item or where pops of paint might be best,” she says. “I’ll ask myself, ‘Do I want to add new feet, or do I want to add new trim?’ It really varies from item to item, and it's more work than just slapping on a new coat of paint.”

While lengthy, Gina’s job is a labor of love. To find furniture to refinish and sell, the item must be at a low-enough price point to start. This means the piece is usually cosmetically flawed. “A lot of the stuff I refinish is pretty scratched up,” Gina admits, “or there’s veneer damage or chunks of wood are missing. It’s generally the stuff that nobody wants.”

But with Gina’s artful hand and artistic eye, she creates standout pieces that anyone would want to adorn their home. In fact, the pieces she tends to gravitate to have lately been on trend: Mid-century Modern furniture. “Mid-century Modern has become really popular even for those who like a modern farmhouse look,” she says. “People like the style’s clean lines, and customers in St. Louis seem to really be drawn to the funky MCM pieces. If I have a Mid-century Modern piece, it tends to sell really fast.” Just five years ago, she says, this wouldn’t have been the case. “Mid-century Modern has really taken off, even pieces in their original condition.”

At the same time, beyond its stylish appearance, vintage furniture is more sustainable. “It’s what the younger generation seems to love about it, but what I’ve always loved about it,” says Gina. “I struggle to buy new things sometimes because there are so many wonderful old things.” When selling her pieces, Gina tries to style them with untouched vintage items to show her followers on Instagram how new and old can be cleverly combined. “I want to show people that they can make things fresh and new even if they are old things,” she says. “I like inspiring people as much as I do selling my work.” Find Gina's work on Instagram @bayberrymoon or in person at Two Chicks Vintage Marketplace in West County. Family Matters

Extensive renovation breathes new life into a St. Charles home chosen with the family in mind.

Candice Wideman reconfigured the kitchen’s layout, moving the cooktop to this wall. Craftsman Charles Lanford built the custom hood and stained the wood accent piece in the same tone as the custom LED light in the adjoining great room. “We really didn’t need upper cabinets on this side, which allowed us to take the backsplash up the wall and edge it with the ledge, where we could add art and accessories for a little more color,” says Wideman.

They upsized to a grand, five-bedroom home with more than 7,000 square feet so it could be the gathering place for family. In fact, that’s what they call the house—the Gathering Place. “Our whole goal in purchasing this home was to be the anchor home for gatherings,” says the wife, noting their family includes three adult children and four grandchildren with another on the way.

Empt y nesters still in the workforce, the couple sold a home in St. Charles they’d remodeled with the help of Candice Wideman, owner of Youtopia Designs. The wife’s work took them out of state but, after a few years they realized they needed a larger, St. Louis base for their trips back here to see family and their eventual full-time return to the Show-Me state. They found a stately home in St. Charles with

The homeowners had requested making the vast room feel more intimate. “It brings the visual of the ceiling down a little, yet you can still enjoy the floor-to-ceiling windows and the sense of openness and airiness in the room,” says the wife. “These ceiling beams and the fandeliers are my husband’s favorite elements.”

Built by Lanford’s Custom Cabinets, retractable steps allow Vinny to walk up to the bath space and then close so the humans can reach him easily. “We utilize this space routinely,” says the wife.

20-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows allowing natural light to pour into the public areas of the home, a first-floor primary suite, fully finished basement level with kitchenette and a mature landscape with plenty of room for grandkids to run around.

“I t was about location, space and that we could envision ourselves living here until we needed to downsize,” the wife says. “There were lots of good things about the house.”

At the same time, however, the outdated house “felt a little hollow,” the wife says. “We wanted to make the space more modern and create what we call our sanctuary, one that’s warm and inviting.”

The couple again called Wideman to work her magic in creating a warm, homey environment, a kind of “rustic-meets-modern” look, the interior designer explains. Wideman worked with Bob Berkley, owner

of Berkley Construction Company, and Charles Lanford, owner of Lanford’s Custom Cabinets, to extensively remodel the main level of the home. A top priority was transformation of the two-story great room. With such tall ceilings, a bow window overlooking a small lake, and more than 20 feet in length, the room looks and feels massive. Yet, “this room was the most hollow with no personality,” says the wife. “The challenge was how to take that room and bring a coziness to it?”

I t was a challenge Wideman met and far exceeded. She visually lowered the ceiling with a custom beamed-ceiling treatment. “It’s basically two rectangles inside each other with an oval in the middle, and diagonal lines connect it all,” Wideman says of the architectural element. “I drew it up and Bob Berkley built it. We’ve been working together for years. He has a great eye for attention to detail.” The great room’s ceiling is a favorite of both the husband and wife. “When you walk into the room, it’s kind of a ‘wow’ factor,” says the wife. It's not the only wow factor, however. Wideman refaced the marble fireplace with stacked stone and framed it on one side with built-in bookshelves painted in Sherwin-Williams “Iron Ore.” On the fireplace’s other side, Wideman

Painted in Sherwin-Williams “Iron Ore,” the new kitchen cabinets were built by craftsman Charles Lanford. An existing chair in great condition from the homeowners’ collection sits in front of new wallpaper with the appearance of grasscloth. “I loved all the blues, whites, grays and taupes in this paper, and the dandelion print adds a touch of nature to the space,” says interior designer Candice Wideman.

The great room’s ceiling treatment is echoed in the nearby dining room, where Candice Wideman repeated the design with beams angling away from the oval. Staining the beams wouldn’t produce the desired effect, so Wideman contracted with Sue Greene, owner of Paint Imagery to faux paint the beams and the ceiling. “We had a lot of fun with this room,” Wideman says.

“We needed something to break up this massive room,” says Candice Wideman. She solved the design challenge beautifully by extending the shower’s marble tile mosaic to the floor and bordering it with a semi-circular shape. “This also draws the eye to the tub area which we also wanted to highlight,” says Wideman. Painting the tub alcove in Benjamin Moore’s “Hale Navy” further defines the space. The light fixture and valance fabric’s delicacy balance the look of weathered metal on the soaking tub.

designed a modern custom light featuring a diamond-shaped pattern. Wideman echoed the ceiling’s design in the dining room. “We repeated the oval and the beams angling away from the oval,” Wideman says of the geometric shapes. Staining the beams wouldn’t produce the desired effect, so Wideman contracted with Sue Greene, owner of Paint Imagery to faux paint the beams. Greene also did a faux treatment on the ceiling inside the architectural elements. “We’d found a fabric wallpaper but then realized it would have visible seams after installation,” Wideman explains. “Sue painted the ceiling to look like that wallpaper.” A linear light fixture with the look of netting mimics a similar motif on the breakfast area’s chandelier.

The homeowners hoped to do a light refresh of the kitchen and primary bathroom, but after considering the possibilities, decided on a gut renovation of both spaces. “We wanted all new flooring to replace the original tile and carpet, so we decided now was the time if we were going to do it,” says the wife. In the kitchen, Wideman introduced dark cabinets in the same hue used for the great room’s built-in cabinetry. Wideman rearranged the space, adding functionality by moving the cooktop and obtaining more storage even though she removed some of the upper cabinets. Lanford built the custom range hood as well as the cabinetry. “He is so conscientious about his work and making sure the homeowners get exactly what they want,” says the wife, noting Lanford always provided samples of door styles, paint

hues, stain colors and other elements for choosing the perfect option. “The work is not only beautiful because of a particular crown molding he did or the details he did on the front cabinetry, but he also thought of functionality such as something specific for Keurig cups and making sure we had the proper drawer space.”

The primary bath was spacious but had a dated drop-in tub and an oddly shaped shower unusually small for such a large bathroom. “We ripped everything out and started fresh,” says Wideman, placing a soaking tub with the look of weathered metal in an alcove and painting an accent wall in Benjamin Moore “Hale Navy.” Reconfiguring spaces resulted in room for a new, nearly 12-foot-long shower clad in 2-foot-by-4-foot porcelain tile. She broke up the room visually and drew the eye to the shower’s beautiful, polished marble mosaic by repeating the mosaic pattern on the floor in the shape of a semi-circle.

Using the same shapes, forms and colors throughout the home ties the spaces together in a cohesive way, Wideman says. “Candice sees things I couldn’t imagine we could do,” says the wife. “I liked most everything she suggested. There were very few revisions from her proposals.”

When the couple bought the home, the wife says they did wonder if it was too big. “We laugh now because we use every room,” she says. “It’s just been wonderful to have a house that lends itself to gathering as a family.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

MINIMALIST STYLE, MAXIMUM IMPACT

Designer Tamsin Mascetti creates a California-cool home that still reflects the friendly warmth of a young family.

The homeowners wanted a unique primary bedroom echoing the home’s modern aesthetic. Tamsin Mascetti designed a 16-foot-long picture frame headboard with a king bed. Each horizontal panel in the headboard is individually upholstered in a performance fabric and each panel is secured to the wall. Pendant lights from Arteriors add a glint of gold to the monochromatic color palette.

When the o wners of this custom home decided they needed guidance to appoint the interiors, they searched online and stumbled upon Tamsin Design Group. In an initial phone call to owner and interior designer Tamsin Mascetti, the wife was struck by Tamsin’s warmth and enthusiasm. During that conversation, the wife mentioned the couple had been watching a new build go up in Frontenac and loved everything about that project. “That house happened to be a new build I had just finished,” Tamsin says. “We were both surprised and excited and knew this chance phone call happened for a reason.”

What began as a phone call morphed into a four-year project where Tamsin Design Group and the homeowners collaborated to create their forever home. Tamsin and her team helped the clients—a couple with two young sons—with everything from the initial design concepts to planning and layout of all interior spaces, interior finishes and furniture selection. “When we are a part of the project from the start, we can help the client navigate through the often-challenging process of building a new home,”Tamsin says. The wife puts it bluntly: "Tamsin was instrumental in everything in this house, from the floor plan, the exterior, interior decor, she did it all, from A to Z."

The couple were no strangers to construction, however. The husband is an executive with SASAK Corporation, a property management, investment and development company. “I’ve been in commercial construction and commercial real estate for

Floor-to-ceiling windows—a must have for the homeowners—flood the space with natural light and overlook the spacious backyard and patio. Two large kitchen islands covered in quartz provide ample areas for guests to gather.

A gold finish was used for the custom range hood and can also be found on the cabinet hardware, barrel-shaped bar stools, and island pendants. Dark, rift oak wood contrasts with high-gloss white cabinets and adds texture to the entertaining kitchen, which also features two large islands. Substantial veining in the large-format floor tiles adds visual interest to the sleek aesthetic.

20 years, but this was my first residential project,” the husband says of building his family’s new home. He is a native of southern California and as the couple were starting their search for a new home in St. Louis, they found they drew inspiration from attending open houses while on their travels to the Golden State.

That California influence was evident in their wish list for their new home, sited on a Frontenac lot with a large back yard. Their home would have an open floor plan, high ceilings, large windows for abundant natural light, spacious rooms and a large entertaining kitchen combined with the family room. “That’s where we spend the bulk of our time, and even when we have friends over for dinner we spend much of the evening in that space,” says the husband. To keep that area clean, the couple also wanted a “dirty kitchen” where they cook not only for guests but for their family meals every evening. “We wanted an area where we can do all the cooking and still be with everyone in the entertaining kitchen and family room and not worry it’s a mess behind the door,” says the husband. “This was important to us.”

I n the entertaining kitchen, the look is streamlined with a built-in coffee bar, refrigerator and freezer closeted behind dark, rift oak doors. Sleek, high-gloss white cabinets on the perimeter and double islands topped with quartz exemplify the modern design the couple favors. A gold finish was used for the custom range hood and can be found on unique island pendants, cabinet hardware and for the base of the bar stools at the island.

The kitchen flows into the two-story family room. With floor-to-ceiling windows and a three-sided fireplace cloaked in large-format tiles, it’s visually dramatic yet still

Large-format tile flooring and 7-foot-tall arched windows create the perfect backdrop for the Jonathan Adler chandelier and round dining table from RH. The homeowners say the light fixtures throughout the home are among their favorite elements.

“The lights in every room give the space that ‘wow factor’ and if it wasn’t for Tamsin and her team, we wouldn’t have this dream home,” says the husband.

A dirty kitchen was high on the homeowners’ list of must-haves for their new home. “We cook here every night,” says the husband. The adjacent entertaining kitchen stays clean while the messiness of preparing food stays hidden when the young family has guests.

feels peaceful and comfortable. “Our focus went into this space because it’s where we live, entertain, do everything,” says the wife. “This was the ‘wow factor’ that we wanted in our house.”

I n the process of selecting finishes and furnishings, the couple realized they love contemporary styling even more than they initially thought. Straight lines, a modern aesthetic and a monochromatic palette appeal to the couple. “Monochromatic is clean and simple to me,” says the wife. “I didn’t want anything that felt like clutter or just too much on the senses.”

Tamsin points to the formal living room as a space where color is added sparingly and the introduction of warmer tones add layers of texture. Heavy-duty, floating wood shelves flank the fireplace clad in large gray tiles. A Kravet area rug anchors the space, which features blue chairs and a modern leather sofa. Overhead, an Arteriors chandelier is like a piece of floating art, Tamsin says. The couple note the carefully curated accessories adorning the shelves have been selected over a period of months, and they appreciate the thoughtful intentionality of Tamsin’s team. “They didn’t just pick a bunch of stuff to get it done,” says the husband. The designer agrees. “It’s collected,” Tamsin says. “The whole room has that feeling of layering pieces that could each stand alone as art.”

The homeowners wanted a unique primary bedroom that echoed the clean, modern ambience of the rest of the house, says Tamsin. She delivered, designing a 16-foot-long picture frame headboard for the king-size bed. Each of the headboard’s horizontal panels is individually upholstered in a performance fabric and each panel is secured to the wall. “Everything in this house looks really stunning but functionality was very important to them, especially considering the fact they are parents to little kids,” says Tamsin. “We used performance fabrics throughout the home for durability.” Jewel-like pendant lights from Arteriors hung over the nightstands add glamour to the space.

The homeowners say the room is one of their favorites in the home, although choosing a preferred space was a challenge, they say. They love every area because each space was so thoughtfully put together by Tamsin and her team. “Although every room is different, everything flows,” says the husband. “They took all our different ideas and wants and put them together in what we have. Every single design element, from the color of our hardwood flooring to the large-format tiles, she and her team were heavily involved and have created the spaces we have.”

On the exterior, Tamsin redesigned the home's architecture for a more traditional bent to align more closely with the neighborhood. She also found a source for the stone. "We wanted a light colored limestone," says the wife. "Tamsin helped us procure it from Texas and it's exactly the look we wanted."

As they drive up to their house when going about their everyday lives, the husband says they often comment that they have to pinch themselves to believe the beautiful structure is really their home. It’s been a labor of love for the family, the wife says. “We wanted a home where our kids would grow up, where we would create all of our memories and where we would grow old in,” she says. “This is our forever home.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources and additional photos.

Gardening with History

Lafayette Square landscape reflects Victorian home

Wealthy Victorians collected things. Taking advantage of improved transportation via railroads and steamships, they traveled far and brought back beautiful objects. Their homes showcased the paintings, elaborate furniture and decorative accessories they purchased on their journeys. They also accumulated classical statues and what they considered exotic plants, often tropicals, which they incorporated into their outdoor spaces in an attempt to recreate the wonders they had seen on their wanderings.

St. Louis’s Lafayette Square, centered with a 30-acre park dating to 1851, is nationally recognized for its display of beautifully restored, Second-Empirestyle Victorian homes. Carolyn and Mike McAvoy have called Lafayette Square home since 1974. “We

fell in love with the neighborhood because of the architecture, the history and the park,” Carolyn explains. “Once we moved in we fell in love with the community. It is a very tight-knit neighborhood; like living in a small town within a big city.”

I n 1983, they bought their current three-story, 1885 townhome with its classic mansard roof shortly after it had been damaged in a devastating fire. Their goal; to restore it to its Victorian glory. “It took about three years to get the house to where we could live in it,” Carolyn recalls. “We bought it several months after our son was born and he was three when we moved in.”

Their first house had no greenspace at all, so Carolyn was delighted with the new property, which offered a front, side and back yard, where there was an existing

swimming pool. “I’m a transplanted Iowa girl,” she says. “I grew up with gardens and flowers. Now, I had a big patio and a swimming pool. I like gardening so much that we actually thought about filling up the swimming pool with dirt to create more space for a garden.”

Ultimately, the pool stayed, and Carolyn began working with the three spaces, which she notes have different climates due to the surrounding buildings and walls. The fire had destroyed much of the low- growing vegetation, so some areas were a blank canvas. “We planted a lot of the trees and some of them that were already there were babies,” Carolyn says. “Now we have these fabulous mature trees and we’ve gone from having a lot of sun to having a lot of shade.”

Large pin oaks grace the small front yard that is framed with a perennially green boxwood hedge. Two delicate Japanese maple trees flank the entrance to the house and contrast beautifully with the massive, double front doors.

Carolyn’s gardening creativity truly begins at the back of the house where she nurtured the tiny trumpet vines she found there and created a trellis to conceal the fence that backed the pool. Full and lush, the vines now form a 10-foot-tall, leafy wall that makes the pool appear as if it has been dropped into a verdant oasis. “The vines have been here for 48 years,” she notes. “In the beginning they did not look at all like they do now. It is lovely to live in a place where you can envision that happening.” To further enhance the garden-like ambiance, Carolyn employs planters filled with palms and ficus trees. With a nod to the Victorian period of her home, classical statues of Neptune and

Venus watch over one end of the space and a joyous statue of a water nymph accents the other. The nymph is a copy of the statue made for the entrance to Pasadena Hills by St. Louis’s Zymo Studios. “The back yard is lush and gorgeous about five months a year and then we put the cover on the pool and we don’t go back here,” Carolyn says. As part of that process, “we get the dollies out and roll the planters into a pickup truck and store them in a building we own,” she says.

The elaborate, art-glass-accented east entrance to the house once served visitors who arrived by coach and provided access to the carriage house at the back of the property. With the horses and carriages long gone and the building now used for a three-car garage and storage, Carolyn transformed the east entrance into a gathering space surrounded by beautiful vegetation. Dominated by large sweetgum trees, she added smaller, understory trees such as lacy, red-leaved Japanese maples and native dogwoods. An upright circular fishpond was already in existence. To tie that concrete structure to the landscape, the couple surrounded it with the decorative, porous limestone rock typically used in rock gardens of the period.

Because the space is sandwiched between the limestone façade and brick walls of her home and the brick wall of the house next door, Carolyn relies on multiple plant-filled containers of varying heights and statuary to create a lush courtyard. Ferns and begonias add color and texture. A tall but airy wrought-iron fence on the south side of the courtyard allows views of the park across the street to become part of the landscape. chairs provide a welcoming invitation to relax and visit. “It is a delightful place all year long,” Carolyn says. “It is a fun place to simply sit and read a book.”

Carolyn and Mike have accumulated planters and statuary from a variety of places; like the Victorians they are collectors. “We’re scavengers,” she explains with a smile. “We enjoy collecting things and we go to a lot of auctions and estate sales. We’ve been doing it ever since we’ve lived here. I know when I see something I want, I need to buy it. I won’t see it again.”

The architecture of the brick carriage house and even the screen door to the entrance to the main house all play a role in the historic authenticity of the courtyard. They sought out and purchased the period screen door from a reproduction firm in Texas. Working with old photographs, the McAvoys have added trim to the carriage house windows and chimney pots to the slate roof to mimic the original design of the lovely, two-story building. The upper level once contained servants’ quarters as well as a hayloft.

“ We are trying to put things back the way they were,” Carolyn explains. “We are very careful about making things look like they have always been there. My husband is a maniac about making sure everything is perfect, even if it is something the average person doesn’t see.”

Carolyn is careful about saving everything from stone blocks to old bricks that were once part of the home. “I save everything just in case,” she says with a laugh. “Pretty often I find something to do with it.”

She has found great satisfaction in adding greenery to the bricks and mortar of her historic home. “The park was heavily landscaped,” she points out. “But the landscaping around the individual homes was sparce. I think the way we have our yard would have been true to those principles. “I love having the freedom to create a space and do things that make me smile and I think it makes other people smile as well. Puffball (Lycoperdon, Calvatia)

Before You Forage

If you want to forage for mushrooms to eat, it’s important to remember how easy it can be to harvest a similar-looking yet potentially dangerous mushroom to the one you’re searching for. Many types of mushrooms look alike, so unless you’re totally familiar with the type of mushroom you’re harvesting, it’s better to leave it than eat it. When in doubt, throw it out.

Description: Puffballs are white, rounded to turban-shaped balls with a pore at the top. They can have spiny warts as well, though these aren’t necessary. The exteriors can change color depending on the mushroom’s age, ranging from yellow to pink and brown. When they are fully mature, the pore on the top will open to release spores.

Size: Puffballs can greatly vary in size and can be mistaken for either golf balls, baseballs or volleyballs. Most commonly found in Missouri are a smaller variety, growing from between one to three inches tall.

When and where: You can find this mushroom popping up in late summer or fall, usually between July and October. They can grow singly or in clusters, and are usually found in open areas such as lawns, open woods or on barren areas with soil or decaying wood.

Morels (Morchella)

Description: Morel mushrooms are the most widely recognized edible mushroom in Missouri; they have an elongated, conical honeycomb cap with brownish-black ridges and yellowish brown pits. The stem is completely hollow and sometimes enlarged at the base.

Size: The size of morel mushrooms can vary, ranging from two to 12 inches tall. When and where: Springing up between March and May, morels thrive best in moist woodlands or in river bottoms; they are commonly associated with ash trees, dying elms and apple trees, though they can grow around any type of tree. They grow mostly as scattered individuals.

Chanterelles (Cantharellus)

Description: Chanterelles are funnel or trumpet-shaped with wavy edges ranging in color from yellow to orange or reddish-orange, and many carry a fresh, fruity fragrance. They also have a network of wrinkles or gill-like edges with blunt edges running down the stem.

Size: Chanterelle size varies greatly depending on growing conditions and species, ranging anywhere from half an inch to six inches wide and tall.

When and where: They are found in hardwood forests during the summer and fall, especially May through September. You can find chanterelles growing in large numbers of scattered individuals on the ground in grass or leaf litter.

Caution: While all chanterelles are edible, there are some poisonous mushrooms that look similar, such as Jack-o’-lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens). These look-alikes have true gills, orange inner flesh or orange to rust-colored spore print, and usually grow in tightly compacted clusters instead of scattered individuals.

Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus, P. pulmonarius)

Description: Oyster mushrooms are known for their white, gray or tan cap with gills and an off-center stalk. The name comes from the semicircular cap shape that resembles an oyster shell. The gills are narrow, and they attach along a short, thick stalk.

Size: The cap is one-to-eight inches wide with a stalk up to one and one fourth inches long and three fourths of an inch wide.

When and where: Oyster mushrooms will grow year-round, but they will always be found on wood; though they may appear to grow on the ground, they are actually attached to tree roots beneath the soil’s surface. You can find them growing in large clusters of overlapping, shelf-like caps.

Caution: Most species that get misidentified as oyster mushrooms are not dangerous, but they may be woody or unpleasant tasting. Be totally sure about the mushroom’s species by making a spore print and cross referencing it online.

Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus)

Description: The easiest of all Missouri edible mushrooms to spot, Chicken of the woods has bright orange, shelf-like caps with a fleshy texture and no stalk. With age, they can fade from bright orange to a peach or salmon color.

Size: This mushroom can vary in size from two to twelve inches wide.

When and where: Found in summer and fall, especially May through November, Chicken of the woods like growing on living, dead or dying hardwood trees, stumps or buried roots. They are very rarely found in spring, unless we’re experiencing warmer temperatures earlier in the season. They typically grow in large clusters of overlapping caps.

Caution: Some people do experience a mild allergic reaction (swollen lips) to this mushroom. When trying it for the first time, cook a small amount to determine if it will cause a reaction.

Hen of the Woods (Grifola frondosa)

Description: The spoon-shaped, grayishbrown caps of Hen of the woods mushrooms got their name from their appearance, often looking like a large, ruffled chicken sitting under a tree; their look comes from their habit of clustering with a short, off-center stalk.

Size: This mushroom is usually measured by the cluster. They can grow up to three feet wide and weigh up to 100 pounds.

When and where: You will always find this mushroom clustering at the base of trees and stumps, though they are most often found at the base of oak trees. They appear in hardwood forests in the fall, usually staying around from September to November. Once you find a cluster, keep revisiting the site as they will often reappear.

Caution: Hen of the woods has no poisonous look-alikes, but there are many that are tough and unpleasant to eat. If you harvest a mushroom that tastes leathery, you probably didn’t pick a hen of the woods.

Pro tip: To be sure you have a chanterelle, cut the mushroom in half lengthwise to see its center, which is completely white in a true chanterelle.

Bring these things with you to make your foraging expedition easier!

• Digging tool

• Roll of wax paper (not plastic wrap, which hastens decay)

• Flat-bottomed basket wide enough to allow for separation

• Notebook to record conditions (where the mushroom was growing, what it was growing on, if it was alone or in a cluster, colors and distinctive features like staining or bruising).

Satisfying Eclectic Tastes

This home near Tilles Park embraces distinctive colors and materials to fill the homeowner’s varied palate.

As homeowners start to crave more custom features in their homes, bare white spaces like those in kitchens and living rooms are on their way out. For Peg Hammerschmidt, designer and owner of Hammer & Schmidt Design Inc, opposing and vibrant textures are half the fun of design. With an artistic approach to interior design, Peg was the perfect person to complete a project that would usher in bold textures and unique features to a home near Tilles Park.

“ We liked Peg’s taste and the fact that she doesn’t do the same thing for everyone,” the homeowner reveals. “She is willing to work with my eclectic tastes.” Therefore, the home’s original kitchen and awkwardly designed living room had to be reimagined. “Contractor Chris Mackey,” owner of HomeWorks, “played a key role in getting it all done,” Hammerschmidt says.

The designer had quite the job before her. The living room, according to Peg, was vertically challenged. “The homeowner wanted a living wall in the living room, but the space’s tall walls are a little too high.” To balance out the walls’ height and help viewers’ eyes trail upward, the designer instead installed a gallery wall of mirrors with pops of faux flowers and greenery. “With these additions, your eyes then dance around the room.” To add depth to the room’s empty space, the entertainment center on the opposite wall was built to nearly touch the ceiling and hold the homeowner’s art collection.

For the kitchen, Hammerschmidt went for a dramatic finish with bold wood and texture selections. The countertops boast a natural granite in gray, sprinkled with gold veining and completed in a suede finish. On the cabinetry, strips of

alternating light and dark wood pieces meet to offer visual interest. “Zebrawood veneer grain runs horizontally on the working side of the island, the lower base cabinetry and the tabletop portion,” says Laurie Fromm, president of Classic Woodworking, Inc. It was Classic Woodworking’s expert craftsmanship, talent and willingness to take any challenge Peg threw at them that helped bring the project to life.

One of the most eye-catching features in the kitchen includes a unique space for live plants. Peg recessed a small area on the top of the island to match the curve of the table, creating a designated place for the flowers and plants. This show-stopping permanent planter is the perfect complement to the unique space.

I n harmony with the kitchen, walnut and black oak cover the lower bar cabinetry in the dining room and showcase Peg’s eye for texture. What was previously a rarely used traditional dining room has become the perfect bar/lounge to host friends and family. To accommodate the dining room’s barrel chairs, the designer personally designed an extension table that transforms from a 60” diameter to a 120”

oval. Along with the new table, Peg replaced their previous dry bar for a redesigned wet bar. This update allowed the homeowner to see each liquor bottle and have all of her necessary bartending materials at her fingertips. The space was completely transformed to host all parties, small or large.

The designer wanted to create an emotional impact with her work. To make this happen, special features from the permanent planter in the kitchen to the wood storage in the living room’s entertainment center sing to the homeowner’s eclectic taste. “She wanted to make her home feel more comfortable, warm and inviting,” says Peg. “I think we achieved that.” See stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

We greet each and every customer and curate our vendors very carefully to make sure they have quality and unique items to sell.”

Skylights are a classic design component that have become a modern craze! Windows in the roof are nothing new, as evidenced by centuries-old architecture all around the world. At the same time, modern skylights are more and more sought after by new homeowners looking to maximize natural light while maintaining energy efficiency and ensuring privacy. Modern skylights have the ability to vent, or open, providing fresh air in addition to abundant natural light. They can also be equipped with shades for glare and climate control, and some can even be programmed to work with smart technology for automation or voice activation. And with an average lifespan of 20-30 years, skylights can start as a craze but easily become a classic component in any home. Mike

The first structure that used skylights was the Pantheon in ancient Rome and they have continued to be used in some form since. In the 1970s, practical use started in industrial structures and then went on to homes. They have been perfected to avoid leaking. Skylights are here to stay as they bring light and air to spaces. Skylights are useful at bringing in some natural light when it’s just unavailable in a space. They have come a LONG way in regards to construction and insulation. They’ve been around quite a while, so they are classic - but the placement has to be right to really reap the benefit! Anne

We use skylights as more of a functional solution rather than a trend. Skylights are a great way to bring natural light into a windowless or dark room. My favorite places to use them are in kitchens, hallways and closets. They make spaces feel larger, while using less electricity. Most people shy away from them because of the folklore of leaking. It’s true in the past, poorly installed skylights may have leaked, but today when properly installed skylights not only can look appealing but are quite sustainable. Sun tunnels are another option for introducing natural light into your home and are less costly to install. Keep in mind that you are cutting into the roof of your home so it’s best to leave this task to a professional, but my feeling is that they are classic.

Skylights can be fixed or vented, and they make a statement in just about any space. Famous skylights are located all over the world: the Pantheon in Rome, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Le Louvre Museum in Paris. Skylights are a connection to the space above and will remain a classic design element.
