ISTANBUL ATATÜRK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT- GLOBAL GATEWAY TAV Airports was awarded with the tender for building and operating the new Istanbul Atatürk Airport International Terminal in 1997. It took only 22 months to develop the new terminal which started operations in January 2000. The new state-of-the-art international terminal has been operated by TAV since then. In 2005, TAV also took over the domestic terminal operations at Istanbul Atatürk Airport. Istanbul Atatürk is a global hub with rapidly growing passenger numbers. Since TAV took over the operations in IST in 2000, the passenger traffic has grown 5 times from 11.4 million in 2002 to 57 million in 2014, proving IST’s slogan of Prime Location, Global Gateway. IST is one of the fastest growing airports in the world despite its high passenger base. IST is equipped with the latest technology and automation systems maximizing efficiency, security and service quality. The high operational efficiency contributes to passenger contentment and customer satisfaction. The terminal building is designed to provide smooth passenger circulation and allows future expansions. The spacious terminal building, effective signage, rich and well placed Duty Free, F&B, “primeclass CIP Services” and other passenger services provide an easy and memorable airport experience to passengers.


IST was named as the Best Airport in Southern Europe by Skytrax in 2013 and IST became Europe’s fastest growing airport with an increase of 11 percent in passenger traffic in 2014, according to Turkish Aviation Authority DHMI data. Approximately 150,000 passengers are served every day. 125 different airline companies carried passengers nonstop to over 290 destinations from IST during 2014. IST has become a global gateway, making the farthest destinations accessible via direct flights. Istanbul Atatßrk Airport was the fourth busiest airport in Europe. 25% of the total traffic in IST is connecting traffic in 2014. With its global network, IST offers fast and easy connection opportunities for passengers.

Thanks to the variety of operating airlines and the destinations served, IST offers many convenient connection opportunities, mostly on Turkish Airlines, which has one of the widest networks in the region. With its global network coverage and strong home base carrier, IST has evolved into a major hub. The transfer passenger share of IST has surged to 25% in 2014 from 13% in 2008. Istanbul Atatürk Airport becomes Operated by TAV Airports, Istanbul Atatürk Airport hit to the top in its category and became Europe’s fastest growing airport by an increase of 11 per cent in passenger traffic in 2014. According to Airports Council International (ACI Europe) data. According to the statement of ACI Europe, Atatürk Airport, which is the fastest growing airport with 2 times growth of European average, also left the airports in its category behind and hit to the top in December. ACI Europe reported that traffic at EU airports grew by 5.4 per cent on the average last year. Looking at the evolution of the airport ranking for passenger traffic since the global financial crisis began back in 2008, ACI Europe General Director Olivier Jankovec commented: “While the top three European airports remain London-Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt, Istanbul Atatürk Airport has jumped from tenth position to the fourth after growing its passenger traffic by more 50% - adding 28 million new passengers. Istanbul Atatürk Airport had a growth of 13 per cent followed by Madrid (9.8%) and Rome FCO (9.6%) in December 2014.

Europe’s fastest growing airport


TAV Group was established in 1997, as a joint venture between the major founding shareholders Tepe and Akfen Groups following their successful bid for the Istanbul Atatürk Airport International Terminal Contract. Istanbul Atatürk Airport was one of the pioneering airport privatization projects in the international market executed under a ‘Build-OperateTransfer’ (BOT) scheme. TAV has become an established airport constructor and operator in the past 18years, not only in Turkey but also in the international marketplace. The company reorganized its organizational structure in 2006, and grouped its “operational” and “construction” activities under the TAV Airports and TAV Construction. Following this reorganization, TAV Airports was presented for initial public offering in February 2007. In May 2012, 38% of TAV Airports’ shares and 49% of TAV Construction’s shares were sold to Aéroports de Paris Group. TAV Airports operate 14 airports in seven countries. The company operates Istanbul Atatürk, Ankara Esenboğa, Izmir Adnan Menderes, GazipaşaAlanya and Milas-Bodrum airports in Turkey. Tbilisi and Batumi airports in Georgia, Monastir and Enfidha-Hammamet airports in Tunisia, Skopje and Ohrid airports in Macedonia, Madinah Airport in Saudi Arabia(Acquired the operations in Madinah Airport through the partnership with Saudi Oger and Al Rajhi Holding), and Zagreb Airport in Croatia (Zagreb Airport Company partnered by TAV, ADPm, Bouygues Batiment International, Marguerite Fund, IFC and Viadukt) are also managed by TAV Airports. TAV Airports also operates duty free, food and beverage and other commercial areas at Riga Airport in Latvia. ATÜ (duty-free), BTA (food & beverage), HAVAŞ (ground handling), TAV IT, TAV Security, TAV Operation Services and TGS (ground handling joint venture of HAVAŞ and Turkish Airlines) are the service companies bundled under the roof of TAV. These companies provide services at 14 airports operated by TAV and also 39 other airports all around the world.
