Graduation Project Brief :
“After I give the instructions, she sits there and stares at her paper. She is not motivated.” Christina Lawrence, [special educator] /// “He has the ability, if he just tried harder, he could do it. He chooses not to do the work.” John Sebastian [pscychologist] /// “If she would just pay attention, she would get it.” Ritu Singh [mother] /// This is not a pang of general frustration of any overambitious parents but a rise of a global issue, the problem of learning disability and cognitive disorders. Cognitive psychological disorders begin at a very young age and the symptoms associated with learning usually arise with preschool-aged children. Children with these conditions may ignore or misunderstand parental instructions and commands. They may have few words, or exhibit unintelligible speech. Sometimes kids have trouble expressing their feelings, calming themselves down, and reading nonverbal cues, which peers. A learning disability, or learning disorder, is not a problem with intelligence. Learning disorders are caused by a difference in the brain that affects how information is received, processed, or communicated. Children and adults with learning disabilities have trouble processing sensory information because they see, hear, and understand things differently. Science has made great strides in understanding the inner workings of the brain and this strife for knowledge has led to groundbreaking new treatments for learning disabilities. Cognitive psychology is a subdiscipline
of psychology exploring internal mental processes. It is the study of how people perceive, remember, think, speak, and solve problems. It has its foundations in the gestalt psychology of Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler and Kurt Koffka and in the work of Jean Piaget, who study intellectual development in children. Lately, this matter has molded itself as a subject of As a communication design student, I believe design is not just a creative expression but also a problem solving activity and it can be explored in terms of developing a solution for cognitive disorders. Most common learning disorders affect cognitive functions, mainly memory processing, perception and problem solving. This might cause problems for them to acquire knowledge through usual system of education. Through this project I wish to develop a model of education for the children with learning disabilities through the medium of interactive visuals and 3 dimensional projection mapping. - Soujanyaa Boruah
