TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT 01 Academic Project - Semester 7 Location : Velachery, Tamil Nadu, India Transit Oriented Development is the exciting fast growing trend in creating vibrant, livable, sustainable communities. Also known as TOD, it’s the creation of compact, walkable, pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use communities centered around high quality train systems. This makes it possible to live a lower-stress life without complete dependence on a car for mobility and survival. 6

Transit oriented development is also a major solution to the serious and growing problems of climate change and global energy security by creating dense, walkable communities that greatly reduce the need for driving and energy consumption. This type of living arrangement can reduce driving by up to 85%. 7

Velachery is a commercial and residential area in south Chennai, and is the largest commercial centre in south Chennai. It is surrounded by Guindy in the north, IIT Madras in the north-east, Taramani in the east, Perungudi in the southeast, Pallikaranai Wetland in the south, also Madipakkam in the south and south-west, Adambakkam in the west and north-west. The growth of the neighbourhood during the last decade can be cited due to the growth of the IT sector in south Chennai. It acts as an important hub connecting the rapidly growing business-class information technology corridor popularly called the OMR; the more mature and well-connected GST road and the central business districts of the city, which has more relevance to the history of Chennai. Velachery as a whole draws a perfect balance between old and new Chennai and is a phenomenon in terms of growth and development. 8

A COMMUNITY OF ECO-HABITATS
03
Archdaiz Competition - Individual Participant Location : Bangalore, India Continuous lockdowns forced people to stay indoors in their homes for weeks. If you look at this problem of staying indoor in an urban home, architecturally you will find that people were actually packed inside a box rather than their homes. As we all know homes in urban areas lack in terms of connect with outdoor areas, natural light & ventilation & a very minimum space to move around. Rapid urbanization has only forced us to live with polluted environments & has led us to a stressful life. 24

The site is located on the outskirts of Bangalore which is a beautiful city with several large lakes, numerous gardens, charming bungalows with flowering creepers and fruiting trees, and teeming birdlife. But however due to the rapid growth of urban population from 2001 - 2021 causing unplanned urbanization with a high density of population, more traffic jams, high level of pollution, unaffordable housing, crating slums, urban crimes, high cost of livings, environmental degradation, and sanitation and water shortages, Keeping all these questions in mind we are trying to propose a regenerative community. The main intention was to break the mental barrier between the residents, by providing a common interest space clubbed together with nature. The common interest space includes clubhouse, green corridor, urban park, is designed considering all the age groups and the various culture and values.

The houses are simple open plan, made of only locally available materials like mud, stones, and wood, passively ventilated with courtyards to ensure a cool climate, added with rainwater pond, solar roofs, individual permaculture kitchen garden, solid and wet waste management. A greenback courtyard connects the cluster of houses creating open spaces, social interaction zones. The pedestrian pathway leads to an urban garden, greenhouse, market, and clubhouse areas.

Kerala architecture is a kind of architectural style that is mostly found in the Indian state of Kerela. Kerala’s style of architecture is unique in india. The natural building materials available for construction in Kerala are stones, timber, clay and palm leaves. The project was designed in the typical ‘Nalukettu’ style of architecture, which is typically a rectangular structure where four or six blocks are joined together with a central courtyard open to the sky. The four halls on the sides are named vadakkini (northern block), Padinjattini (western block), kizhakkini (eastern block) and thekkini (southern block) 37

Height limitation due to bylaws (due to less access road width) caused an idea of multiple blocks separated by a indoor courtyard space in between. Central space blends with parking space and result in easy access. This space also acts as an interactive space in between the blocks. 38
