SOULstice:

Let Your Soul Shine by Dani Palacio

When I was a little girl, I sometimes wished I were a faerie or a witch. I loved the idea of magic and the ability to create a spell or potion to add spark into my play. I spent a lot of time out in nature – some by choice and some by my mother’s choice. Either way, I was always grateful because the trees would call me to climb them and the animals and critters would encourage me to play with them. I always noticed the sparkle of a flower; it was if the flower

was smiling at me. I played with my neighbors and we’d create concoctions that we’d pretend were the magic elixirs that would give us strength or defeat our enemies. It was so much fun that I often didn’t make it home in time. I had what I needed: trees, ponds, frogs, snakes, insects, mud, berries, and pretty flowers, Oh! and a wild imagination! These magical times, as a young girl in rural Minnesota, shaped who I am now. And just like then, I still love magic! Summer Solstice reminds me of the magic of the Universe. Its energy is bright, full of light and endless possibilities. Do you remember when you were a kid and you played until the sun went down? It was 9pm? The fun, the laughter, and the energy were so intoxicating. Solstice is the start of a time in our seasons where the full light of the sun is available to us. Its intensity is available. It’s a short period, just 92 days before we head into fall. When I first did some research about solstice, the science overwhelmed me. The exact positioning of the earth in relationship to the sun is fascinating, but it’s not my intention with this article. Instead, I want to focus on the magic of solstice and how we can create and experience a true SOULstice. How can we let our souls lead us into the magic of life? As we enter the Summer Solstice this year on June 21st at 3:51am (PT) we

4 {soul life}

enter a time of great sunSHINE, heat, growth, and expansion. Our eternal Mother is doing the same thing - plants grow, farmers' markets thrive, outdoor activities are a must and we soak it all up. The rays kiss our skin. The food is abundant. The sweetness is palpable. We are nourished in every area of our life. As the days lengthen and the sun’s rays warm us, allow yourself to open to the infinite possibilities that await you. Will you grow? Will you ripen? Will your soul take a leading role? Now is the time to break through and experience the fullness of living in the light! I want to invite you to find a few quiet moments to consciously expand your heart and life force. Imagine the sun’s rays warming your face and as it does, it opens your heart. Before you know it you're glowing, you're emanating and you're sharing your soul with the world. It’s a safe place and all the light is returning to you. In this precious moment your SOUL has a magical moment. Your thoughts, dreams, and wishes all come true. You are aligned in the mystery of the solstice and the magic of pure possibility! You just need to believe! I believed I could as a little girl. It’s the belief that created the magic, as I climbed trees or ran innocently through sprinklers. I am reminded of this belief every time I feel the sun on my skin and allow it to guide my actions. Here’s to the magic of summer!

SUMMER SOLSTIC QUICK FACTS: June 21st, 2014 @ 3:51am PT Official first day of Summer in Northern Hemisphere (Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere) The sun's zenith is at its furthest point from the equator. Earth's maximum axial tilt toward the sun is 23° 26'. It’s the longest hours of daylight for those living north of the equator. The word solstice is from the Latin word “solstitium”, meaning “sunstopping” For several days before and after each solstice, the sun appears to stand still in the sky—that is, its noontime elevation does not seem to change. It is said that Stonehenge was built to help establish when summer solstice would occur. Many countries hold festivals and celebrations to honor the sun.

{soul walks} Photography & Inspiration by Joey Paynter Soul Walks are a time to really “see” into nature, to walk consciously, breathing awareness into your being and allowing your soul to speak to you. So often we go along our days missing those soft subtle moments, those whispering questions that our soul wants to ponder. I have found taking a camera with me, not as a distraction, but as a way of deeply seeing into the “other” allows me to listen into the in-between spaces. It heightens my senses and unfolds a world of magic that so often goes unnoticed. We are surrounded by the beautiful gifts of Mother Nature. Her presence moves in our senses, our inner knowing sees her breath and feels her subtle body. What would it take for you to become (re) united with her? What if you were to take time out of our day and walk with eyes wide open? What would you see? What would you hear? What would you feel? What questions in your soul are waiting to come to life? I challenge you to grab a camera, enter into a meditative walk where you breathe into the moments and listen with your soul wide open. I invite you to send us your images and soul questions to soullifezine@gmail.com.

SUMMER Extroversion by Lora Keddie

, Summer is here. I live in the Pacific Northwest so it's a time of year everyone comes out of hiding after 9 months of hibernation. Summer is a time when our kids are on break, so we pack our bags and head out into the world to experience... or to just catch up with family and friends. We plan barbecues and camping trips. We gather around swimming pools. We make ourselves busy. We get out. We spread out. We connect. Summer is an extrovert, and for an Empath, a person

who has the ability to absorb others feeling and emotions, it is very loud. Imagine all the seasons as friends at your cocktail party. Fall, she would bring armloads of gifts from her garden to share. She would tell you over and over how grateful she was that you created this event for her to share. She would start yawning early and tell you she must retire early for the evening. Winter, he would be there to honor the celebration, but he will be quietly and intently observing the conversation. Winter's silent gaze would make you feel like he saw more than what you

could see. Spring, well she comes and everyone can feel her excitement. She's always up to something new. She always has something she's about to do. And then there's summer... he commands attention. He hops from conversation to conversation making sure he gets a chance to spend time and experience everyone. He has a loud laugh that turns heads. Summer doesn't know how to use his "inside voice". He is loud and as radiant and as blinding as the sun. For some in the group his glow and joy is contagious; for some he's annoying.

Empaths are humans, and by nature of being one we often come in two models - Extroverts and Introverts. There is definitely a rainbow of options in between having more tendencies in one camp or the other. I fall into the rainbow. I'm definitely an extroverted Empath. I love spring. I love to emerge and begin to reconnect with family and friends post our winter dormancy. But I like to refer to myself as a barbecue party extrovert vs. a rock concert extrovert. Summer to me is a rock concert. Everyone emerges with spring and now they are out there sharing themselves with the world, taking it all in, expressing themselves, being alive. All those feelings, emotions are strong and loud, and out there for the taking of anyone sensitive to emotional vibrations like Empaths are.

As an Empath, Summer can be the same. Some Empaths will feed on all the humanity they can get their hearts on during this time of outward-ness. We live for this time of year. For other Empaths, it’s just too much.

There are plenty of Empaths who love to feed on all this Summer energy, for me it's a little loud. I feel for

those who are more Introverted. I have one friend who is an extreme Introverted Empath. She loves the summer sun and its warmth, but longs for Fall when everyone becomes more quiet again.

Fall inside voice, offer them smaller venues, or my favorite, offer them the opportunity to come early. It's easier for most of us to take one person at a time, versus walking into a mass of human conditions.

Others have asked how I navigate this time of year. Metaphorically, I put sunglasses on. I take in only as much as I can handle. Obvious isn't it? But doing it is actually harder, especially when you are feeling the pressure to participate, celebrate, and attend to this outward time. We tend to judge those who don't want to participate "when everyone else is doing it." Our desire for others to come out and play is understandable, but we also need to have compassion and understanding that it's a little freak'n loud for some of us.

If Summer is loud for you, first of all, don't feel guilty about needing less people. There are no rules that you have to reconnect with everyone you have ever known in 3 months. I looked it up... there isn't. Second... do enjoy the sun. Do get out. Attend smaller events, do just as many as you can, and then find a way to spend some time in nature. All those thought forms and emotions that waylay us are rarely there. You can breathe in the season and enjoy all of its healing even with all the emotional babble crossing your path.

If you see a friend, or more importantly, notice this in your child, my suggestion to you... use your Spring/

Here's to rock concerts and sunglasses, and anyway you want to experience this loud extroverted Summer season!

TIME OUT FOR EMPATHY by Lora Keddie

I had three sisters growing up. We were not always kind to each other. I write this with a smile. We were a rough bunch of little girls. I was probably the best at making my sisters’ lives miserable. If it wasn’t for my mother’s steadfast position of the golden rule, “do unto others as you would want them to do unto you,” I’m not sure I would have liked the person I would have become. With each bad behavior she would teach us about empathy. She would use tricks to help put us back in the shoes we maybe borrowed without asking, or used to kick someone in the shins. She would ask, “How do you think they feel right now?” All I could think of was my tears and my pain. After answering, “I don’t know,” she’d give me a quiet room, a time out, so I could sit with pen and paper and either draw or write all the feelings I caused my sister to feel with my actions. At first I hated being in that room by myself, but once I realized I wasn’t going anywhere; it was amazing how nice the quiet of the room was, and then how much fun it was to get creative with writing or drawing out my sister’s pain. Soon I realized the more I recreated her pain, it was a lot like mine. Typically an hour later I’d come out

with my head down and present my work just in time not to miss dinner or the evening family TV shows. It’s amazing what a little time in absolute quiet and with time to create can actually do the work for a parent. The “right” answer is in your child. Our world is so loud and busy we often can’t hear it. The more they practice this understanding of others’ feelings the easier it will come without having to shut down the noises of the day. Too often we tell our children how they are feeling, or how someone else is feeling, or we ask them a question and then proceed to answer it ourselves. We instantly react, “Do you know you hurt her feelings? You made her sad.” We rob them of developing their innate understanding of emotions and the opportunity to think for themselves. Of course, this is easier to do at home than it is out in public, but you’ll be surprised if you start the process of allowing your children to answer their own emotional (feeling) questions. These amazing tools will now be available to them throughout their lives. Think…how did your parents teach you the golden rule?

{soul tips} You don’t have tor travel to India and work with gurus to connect to your soul... unless you want too. It’s far simpler. Here are a few fun tips to connect deeper in with soul.

1. Go outside and play.

Yes really. Play as though you were still five years old. Go outside and build a fort, play with sidewalk chalk, go to the store and buy bubbles and play with them, play with a kid across the street, run in the sprinklers, jump in puddles, spin in circles arms wide open, make mud pies. So often we forget to play and yet it is in the active of playing our soul opens to the joy of what we’ve forgotten. (Go try it and see what happens!)

4. Grab a camera

(Even if you don’t consider yourself a photographer) Go on a walk, take pictures of anything and everything that grabs your attention. Become curious about your surroundings. When you return give each picture a title and see what truth it speaks to you about your life. Another option is think of a theme such as light, dark, freedom, openings, soul, etc. and let your surrounding speak to you about this truth. (We invite you to email us any of your pictures for sharing at soullifezine@gmail.com

2. Find a theme in your life.

For example: muted, connected, fluid, alive, stuck, curious, etc., and then ask for the universe to reveal a deeper layer of what these theme words really look like. Pay attention to how they respond in life. For example, if “fluid” is your word, start playing with this idea. Watch when water pours over and through your fingertips. If you live by water go to a creek, river, lake or ocean and watch how water moves. You get the idea¯basically get creative and simply have fun!

3. Create - Create - Create!!! This

isn’t about being an artist; this is about expressing your soul. Remember when you were five and you would just slap paint up on a piece of paper and it was a masterpiece. It was more about the process than the end product. We challenge you to go create, paint, collage, take pictures, draw, build, dream… and do it all as if you were five years old.

Open your Eyes

by Joey Paynter

Every day all of us do this one same thing to start our day. We open our eyes. However, the degree and rate to which they open differs substantially. Maybe you’re the one who instantly pops them open with a wide- eyed smile on your face eager for your day ahead (if this is you, I'm officially jealous. Can we please trade?) Maybe you choose to only open them half way before you quickly close them again wishing the snooze button would magically carry you into several more hours of sleep (this is me). Maybe you slowly drag yourself up and out of bed unsure if you’ve even opened your eyes as you sluggishly begin your morning routine. Maybe you’re the one who is magically pulled by the sweet aroma of coffee brewing in the other room or maybe it’s the thought of that first sip warming your taste buds, which finally ushers you out of bed. Regardless of your process, at some point, you open your eyes. But, do you? Truth be told, at one point or another, we all fall into it. We fall into the minutes, the hours, the days, unsure of where we are going, what we are doing, and even more importantly, who we are becoming. We forget our purpose. We confuse our purpose with all the expectations, deadlines, and routines we have woven into our life tapestry. Checklists become our gods and we are consumed with the one more thing that must be done in our day. This leaves our ego smiling in delight while our soul gets left out and told, “I don’t have time to listen to you.” When we do this, we close our eyes. We close our eyes to our deepest dreams, our wildest callings, our most magical imagination because, “we just don’t have the time.” Time. Tic.Tock.Tic.Tock. Off you go. The White Rabbit echoes these sentiments perfectly in the magical tale of Alice in Wonderland. “I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye! I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!" Maybe we aren’t as boisterously expressive as the White Rabbit, but what if in all our madness of doing we forget to say hello to our world? We forget to see the delicate beauties coming to greet us in the intricately detailed spider web constructed outside our front door. We overlook the ladybug landing on our arm and the spots it carries ready for us to make a wish

12 {soul life}

summer 2014 â‹… 13

before it flies away. We ignore the butterfly fluttering in front of us beckoning us to play because our mind is caught up in a world outside of the present. I’m guessing you might be thinking this idea of opening your eyes sounds nice and playful, but come on, who are you kidding!? We really don’t have the time and certainly not time to chase butterflies and fireflies, take long walks without a destination, enter into an imaginal world where the wind is wrapping her arms around us, or the trees are inviting us into a mystical world of play. Here comes the crazy part. What if you do have the time? What if you believed everything you came in contact with was soul, contained soul, and reflected soul? James Hillman, one of my favorite depth psychologists, has this beautiful idea that maybe just maybe, soul isn’t in us, but rather we are in soul. Did you catch that? We are inside the soul of the world. If that isn’t magic, then I don’t know what is. This means our world is alive and full of connection and we are inside of it to discover its wonders. All we have to do is open our eyes. Open our eyes to see soul. I’ll let you in on a little secret: this world wants to play, engage, enchant, and remind you of your constant connection to soul. All it requires is your imagination and

{

... our world is alive and full of connection and we are inside of it to discover its wonders.

14 {soul life}

{

a desire to see through and into your surroundings with a spirit of play. I’ll see if I can jar your memory to a time when you once lived this way. Remember the first time you discovered a caterpillar and sat in awe of your most prized treasure? How your eyes shone with curiosity and wonder. How about when you would get lost in play for hours upon hours as a child unaware it was starting to get dark? Or how everything became a bright new shiny object? Here’s a thought, what if you (re)entered into life with those same eyes? Start opening your self into those simple, quiet moments where your soul already knows life is eagerly waiting to look deeply into you; those moments which open your soul into another layer of being and remind you of an imaginal world of play. A world filled with magic and enchantment where every tree has a voice, every dandelion contains a wish, and the woods are a mystical land filled with forts, mythical figures, and hours of endless adventure. Because it’s here inside these soft subtle layers where you will hear the whispers from your childhood reminding you to open your eyes and step into the in-between spaces and play.

If this all feels foreign, I invite you to become curious about your childlike self. What would you ask? How would you engage and explore with you in your day? Allow the questions to become your guide and maybe just maybe you'll hear whispers of the untold secrets of your soul's desires. Your task this summer is simple: become childlike in your seeing and when morning first takes her breath, begin to breathe with her. Breathe in her heartbeat and become curious of what she wants to reveal to you. Invite your curiosity out to play and ask, “What does this magical world want to show me today?” Or ask anything that will take you deeper into the world of seeing. The important thing is to simply remain in a state of curiosity and allow your questions to become your guide.

Fennel Arugula Salad 2 small bulbs fennel 2/3 cup fresh dill 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup walnut oil or olive oil 1 tsp honey 1/4 tsp salt (sea salt or Himalayan) 6 cups arugula 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, toasted* 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese (optional)

In a large salad bowl, add your arugula then add your fennel with dressing. Add dill then toss together so everything is well mixed. 6. Optional – depending on your personal diet – add toasted walnuts and/or feta cheese. Another great cheese option is honey goat cheese. a. To toast walnuts, place in a dry hot skillet and keep close attention to toss in pan so they roast evenly. Optionally, you can preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spread nuts on a baking sheet. Bake about 7 minutes or until toasted and fragrant, stirring twice.

{ soul words } Often a word pops in to our heads (hearts) that summarize what we are going through, what we need to work on, or what we are noticing evolving in front of us. These words have significance when we look at them deeply and apply them in the here and now, and can have deep soul understandings. Here are a few words that have bubbled up for us this season.

Thinking Outside the Church examines 110 ways

people connect with their spirituality. It does not seek to supplant the religious feeling many people experience inside a church, but seeks instead to supplement that experience by suggesting a more expansive view of spirituality. In this view, the world and our activities outside the church are also seen as the sites and rites of worship and spiritual practice, as ways of connecting with our personal vision or version of the sacred. From art, nature, and dreams to dancing, traveling, and parenting, Jennifer Leigh Selig points readers toward the potential and the power present in diverse pathways that may not traditionally be seen as religious or spiritual. In addition to her own thoughtful introductions, Selig collects quotes that span cultures, time periods, religions, and wisdom traditions, each testifying to the universality of seeking the spiritual by Thinking Outside the Church. { soul reads } The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles Written by Steven Pressfield

REVIEWED BY DANI PALACIO -- A dear friend wrote about this book on her blog. I thought it looked interesting but didn’t think it was for me. Then this past Christmas, she gave me a copy. Well, there you have it. The Universe had intervened and now the book I was reluctant to read was sitting in my hands. Thank goodness I was leaving on vacation soon and it got packed into my carry-on. This one little book that is not in a traditional layout changed my life. It ignited my spark and before I knew it I had a raging fire burning inside of me. What Steven Pressfield writes about is what most of us never really want to face and most definitely never admit to ourselves. The wall between our dreams staying a dream versus truly manifesting is built on resistance! It is powerful and it is the enemy. Pressfield does an excellent job cracking the wall so we can take it down brick by brick. We must understand this enemy then and only then we are empowered to take action, which he calls going Pro! Once you declare that you are a professional and committed to your craft – whether that be writing, painting, cooking, opening a business, etc – then you are available for your brilliance to be transformed into concrete action. Lastly, Pressfield addresses the unseen. Some call it faith, others call it magic but really it’s the mystery of the Universe conspiring upon your behalf to ensure you live a fully abundant, fulfilled life. This book broke through my resistance by admitting my inability to make the full on commitment to be fully me, all the time. It has inspired me to honor that I am a creative soul who wants to connect with people and somehow capture their stories. Ultimately, I want to inspire people to live their stories and write their chapters with as much love, joy and possibility for a hopeful, fulfilling life!

My diverse background in psychological studies and my ever-growing passion for empowering the human soul has led me around the world to work with others in giving a voice to their story. I attained a B.S. in Psychology and Religion from James Madison University, a Masters in Clinical Psychology from Vanguard University, and am currently in the process of attaining my Ph.D in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. I’ve also completed a 2-year SoulArts apprenticeship program under a practicing Shaman, which has helped me attune to the spirit world. I’ve worked with individuals and groups for over 15 years and I specialize in relational struggles, depression, anxiety, and (re)discovering one’s dreams. I’ve traveled extensively to over 40 countries as a counselor, healer, lecturer, and photojournalist, You can view my work at www.joeypaynterphotography.com and www. aseekersjourney.com and please feel free to drop me a note anytime.

{we'd love to hear from you} Please send us your ideas, feedback or write to just say hi! Also follow us on social media as we post new content, questions, inspirations and activities for living a soul life!

about Lora Keddie I am gardener, a writer, a business owner, a farmer's wife, and... an Empath and a Spirit Talker. There I’ve said it. It’s taken me years to admit it, understand and accept it. Now in doing so, I’ve opened my life to this amazing world. For years I tried to block, hide and get rid of my abilities thinking that I just might be insane. With love and support, I’ve learned to hear spirit and to travel through worlds that many of us have yet to experience. I study Shamanism, which is a practice of direct relevation through listening to your own intuition, soul and your loving spirit guides. With the aid of spirits I can help heal and open souls. Lovingly nicked named Pandora Lora, since working with me you’ll often find yourself opening to something more… more that is out there and the more that is available in you. I help to open the “box” that’s been closed in you, and the box you’ll find doesn’t want to be closed again. All that being said, there is very much I’m still learning. I believe I always will be learning and feel that sharing my experiences through this journey just might help the next person who is waking up to this wild and wonderful life. Whatever it is that you are trying to open up to, please feel free to contact me. If I can’t help, I may be able to direct you to someone who helped me.
