International school in a friendly local neighborhood
N
Words by Alexander Arka | Photo by Slamet Melda
ow in its 28th year, Bali International School (BIS) is the first internationally accredited school in Bali and is the only school on the island offering all three International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Nicely established in the midst of a peaceful neighborhood of Banjar Taman in Sanur, the school is a private, secular, non-profit, day school for Indonesian and expatriate students offering curriculum taught entirely in English. Dating back to its humble origins in 1985, BIS has a rich and proud history. Since then, the school has grown quickly and now boasts top facilities and an enrollment of approximately 300 pupils from Pre-School through to Grade 12. In spite of the increasing number of students, the school has maintained its familiar and warm atmosphere as a tight-knit and caring community of learners. “We continue to provide educational excellence for the international community, to people who are internationally minded, not necessarily foreigners, but also Indonesian people, said the head of school, Denise Walsh. In fact, around 60 percent of the students have one parent Indonesian and one parent foreigner, 30 percent have foreigner parents, and the remaining 10 percent are Indonesians. With a diverse cultural mix of students--26 different nationalities representing various regions in the world, students of BIS have wide opportunity to foster their sense of tolerance, respect different culture and learn how the world is interrelated. In line with its mission to provide educational excellence in a supportive, secure environment preparing the students to thrive and succeed as responsible citizens in a changing world, it offers a wide range of facilities to support and accommodate the learning process. Outside the class, BIS generously offers various co-curricular activities in sports, academics and performing arts. Students also
20

have many opportunities to take on leadership roles, as well as participating in international conferences. Fostering students to become more caring and responsible citizens, BIS implements service to the community. “We believe that moral responsibility does not come in a package with adult life, but must be fostered from a much younger age. Through our Global Citizenship Program, students are encouraged to apply what they have learned in the classroom, ” Denise said. The program offers various learning activities for students to choose from, and projects combining research and actions. BIS also works with several non-profit organizations, including Elishama orphanage for disabled children, Taman Bacaan (local literacy), YKIP (music lessons for local children), SOS (Sumatran Orangutan Society), Bali Urban Farmers and Habitat for Humanity. To engage the students closely with Indonesian—and particularly Balinese culture, all students learn about religious celebrations on the island. They also learn Balinese dances and traditional music instrument gamelan. “We’re aware that many things are being celebrated here, so we learn the history behind the celebration. At the moment, we are very excited in welcoming Nyepi Day. It would be nice to stop for a day and reflect on our life. We also talk these things with the students,” Denise commented, referring to the Hindu’s Day of Silence that would be observed on March 21. In nurturing love for the environment, the students also work on green initiatives. SOS V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015

ith its quirky concept, Man Shed offers a strikingly different ambience of bar, restaurant and public art. The owner, Nyoman Sumadi—a native of Sanur, keeps some of his collections of classic cars and motorbikes here. Patrons will get unique experience of chilling out here, while enjoying a glass of cold beer and playing pool amidst these antique vehicles decorating most parts of this place. It is not only the nice selection of cars and bikes that make Man Shed extraordinary. The ambience of a real shed is created through the presence of used goods for the properties—chairs, tables, decorations. “Eighty percent of this place is made up through used properties. Why buy new ones if we could use second-hand goods..” said Igo Blado who manages this place. Although Man Shed has only been running for a year—since December 2013, this place becomes increasingly well-known, not only among clubs of automotive enthusiasts, but also from various communities, as well as individuals—locals, expats and tourists who simply love to hang out in a hip place. Igo attributed the growing popularity of Man Shed through its active participation in facilitating the activities of communities by providing the venue for their events. In addition to being a gathering place for many automobile clubs, Man Shed has actively supported

local musicians and industries. Earlier this year, it launched Sunday flea market, held in the first and third week every month. The all-day event provides an opportunity for local creative industries to promote their products—clothing, accessories, etc. Most of them has been running their business online, and has no place to meet their customers. In the afternoon, the flea market is enlivened by the performance of local musicians presenting their original creations. There is also live music here every Friday and Saturday. More recently, Man Shed has expanded into a space for art, presenting some paintings created by artist Dodit Artawan. As a bar and restaurant, Man Shed serves some simple and affordable Indonesian, Asian and Western cuisines to cater to both foreign and local patrons. Pork Ribs, Chicken Cordon Bleu and Beef Steak have managed to attract some fanatic patrons. SOS Located on Jalan Tirtanadi, just a few meters from By Pass street, this place opens daily from 11 am to 12 pm during weekdays, and until 1 am on the weekend. V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015

Warung Adi
Balinese nasi campur with fresh natural ingredients Words by Alexander Arka | Photo by Slamet Melda
N
asi campur (literally means mixed rice)--a plate of rice with an assortment of dishes, has been an iconic food in Bali. Albeit with different styles, Balinese nasi campur is available in almost every turn, from small food stalls to even luxury eateries across the island. In Sanur, one of the most favorite places to enjoy nasi campur is Warung Adi on Jalan Danau Buyan. Although its patrons come from different walks of life, this warung has managed to attract a lot of foreigners. Even most of the customers are tourists from abroad and expatriates, in addition to businessmen, prominent politicians and government officials. Established 26 years ago by Desak Nyoman Suciati, the warung was a humble stall selling common Balinese food, like tipat cantok and rujak. She takes her son’s name Adi to be the name of the place. While running the stall, she also catered hotel employees around Sanur by delivering Balinese food. As the business developed, she then decided to expand her food stall and serve more variety of food. Years later, Warung Adi gained its popularity due to its delicious nasi campur served with a wide variety of side dishes that the customers can choose.
24
V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015
There are a lot of options of side dishes, including sayur urap (vegetable mixed with shredded coconut), ayam betutu (steamed chicken with Balinese spices), grilled chicken, fried prawns, grilled fish, sate ikan (skewered fish with Balinese spices), tempe (soybean cake), tofu, and crispy fried chicken skin. Patrons can also have the nasi campur with a small bowl of soup with Balinese spices. For those who would like to have it spicier, three kinds of sambal (chili sauce) are available here: sambal goreng, sambal tomat and sambal matah. A portion of nasi campur costs between Rp 25,000 to Rp 40,000, depending on the kind of dishes selected by the customers. To ensure the tastiness of the food, Desak always use fresh and natural ingredients for all the dishes, including the Balinese spices that are freshly cooked everyday, without using artificial flavor enhancer. Open daily from 7 am to 4 pm, Warung Adi usually sees its busy hours around lunch time. The warung could sell as many as 600 to 700 portions per day. So, when you are around Jalan Danau Buyan and drooling for Balinese nasi campur, opt for this delicious dish in Warung Adi. SOS V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015

Sanur Bersatu
Words by Alexander Arka | Photo by Slamet Melda & Sanur Bersatu
A
round the year 2005, a number of youths in Sanur shared similar concerns about security issues in the subdistrict, which is divided into 30 banjar (customary hamlets). Brawl, communal clash among banjar, cases of crime—including homicide and drugs involving Sanur residents, not to mention incidents of people from outside Sanur entering the area and cause security disturbance, are among the problems they were worried about. Some residents, who own bungalows, were also complaining about being “extorted” by irresponsible people. They were concerned that this safety issues would shun visitors away from Sanur, thus posing disadvantages to the thriving tourism industry. “Many of them felt threatened with the situation. Sanur was not as safe as it used to be. We then came up with the solution that we need the youths of Sanur to unite and secure this village,” said Ida Bagus Raka Jisnu, co-founder and leader of Sanur Bersatu. The mass organization was declared on December 29, 2005. In addition to involving the youths, it also invited prominent figures in the community to sit in the advisory board. While mass organization has notoriously known by the public for being ‘troublemakers’, Sanur Bersatu is trying to build a positive

image in the society by conducting various social activities, as well as helping security officers to maintain the area safe. Having around 700 active members, the organization is always being in the forefront and vigorously ready to settle conflicts or security disturbance happened in the village. Among the social activities they regularly conduct are beach clean up and blood drive. These activities also serve as a tool for the organization’s members to know each other better, thus fostering a sense of ‘brotherhood’ among the youths and avoid conflicts. “Sanur Bersatu is committed to maintain safety and security in Sanur without being anarchic,” said Jisnu, who is also head of Sanur subdistrict. Now in its seventh year, Sanur Bersatu has been quite influential in keeping the village safe, as proven by the decrease in incidents related to security disturbance. Their roles in keeping the village safe have been acknowledged by the police precinct through an award in 2013. Leaders in the organization’s board are often being invited to talk in seminars about security. They also find themselves being sort of ‘advisors’ for other villages, which learned that Sanur has been successful in keeping peaceful condition. SOS V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015

IB Kompyang Astawa
Master of sacred artwork Words by Alexander Arka Photo by Slamet Melda

da Bagus Kompyang Astawa was never dare to create an artwork for holy purposes before, although he knew he was able to, until somebody asked him to make a deer head-shaped statue to be put on a shrine. That was a milestone in his years of experience of becoming a gifted artist, who has always been passionate about creating an artwork since he was young. Thanks to the word of mouth, the 52-years-old artist started to be known in the society for his remarkable skills in making sacred objects, including statues, the holy masks of rangda or barong, as well as other artworks for ritual paraphernalia. “I am a realist, an autodidact. Making artworks is my way of seeking a personal amusement, satisfaction, said Kompyang. In times when there is no order to make sacred artwork, he keeps creating something out of his ideas and abundant inspirations. Sometimes, people would later come and being interested to buy his
28
V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015
artwork to be used for holy purposes. He believes that an artwork made with passion and prayer would result in soulful and charismatic masterpiece. “People say my creation has a soul, a strong charisma, or Balinese call it as taksu. Some of them even experienced an eerie moment of seeing as if the object turns alive, with moving eyes, and so on,” said Kompyang, who is also a Hindu priest. Many Balinese believe that a sacred object created by someone who has a prominent caste in the society like him, would possess stronger taksu. Sometimes it requires greater efforts to create an artwork for holy purposes, since there are certain rituals that he has to carry out beforehand. To make a mask or other objects to be kept in the temple, for instance, he could not just grab the woods out of nowhere, since he has to ask for occult instructions as to where to take the woods from, and how to take them with certain procession and offerings. This process sometimes involves one person, or more, falls into trance. The persons who ask him to make the sacred object also have to present offerings in the beginning of the process. Despite all the supernatural nuance during the process, he, however, admitted that he ignores the occult whispers that he might feel while creating the object, and just follow his intuition instead. It is his passion to create artworks and his solidarity to help other that drive him to keep making masterpieces for sacred purposes, because in his mind, money never comes first. “If people would pay me for the works, then I would be grateful,” he said humbly. He believes that the true artist always simply follows inspirations to create something with high quality that others would admire, without calculating how much they would be paid. “If we create something with passion, then the artwork would ‘speak’ the quality itself.” While many people admire his works for being soulful and attractive, he prefers not to be proud and satisfied and instead consistent to be a lifetime learner. efore Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa established Hatten Wines in 1994, all available wines in Indonesian market were imported. It was quite challenging to build a business of alcoholic beverage in Indonesia, but Rai was successful to seize the opportunity when there was still no local producer of wines amid the growing consumption in the country—especially in Bali, a holiday destination for many foreign tourists. The island is definitely the perfect and the largest market for wine in Indonesia, since it needs to cater for tourists in hotels and restaurants. Started by researching many kinds of viticulture by planting imported grape seeds on the island’s tropical climate, Hatten then set the trend in the market with its first product Fresh RosÊ wine, a variety of which the company is now famous for. While its winery is located right in the heart of Sanur, the vineyards of Hatten are situated in Sanggalangit, along the north coast of Bali, where it owns and manages over 35 hectares of vineyards in partnership with local land owners. With evergreen vines, the vineyards propose a year-round experience of growing grapes in Bali. As the first winery in the country, the company is committed to produce quality wines that suit both the tropical climate and the spicy delicious foods of Indonesia.
30
V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015
Using locally grown Alphonse-Lavallée grapes of French origin, Rosé carries tropical fruit aromas and flowery overtones, leaving a clean and refreshing aftertaste on the palate. After experimenting further, Rai has also succeeded in cultivating Probolinggo Biru. The grapes are used for its Tunjung Sparkling Wine. Hatten also produces delightful wine made from the Belgia grapes grown in its vineyards to make Aga White Wine and Alexandria Wine. Years after the business was started, wine gained more popularity in the country. It is no longer loved only by foreigners, but by the locals as well. Wine lovers find that wines produced from locally grown grape varieties offer new sensations, delivering light characteristics and fruity tastes that match the tropical climate, and are perfect companions for Indonesian or most Asian foods that have heavy and rich tastes of herbs and spices. Hatten reached another milestone in its journey in 2001, after celebrating its 100th vintage of the Rosé, by introducing a white wine and a white sparkling, a medium bodied red wine, and two fortified Pineau des Charentes methods wines. Despite once exporting the products to Maldives and some European countries, Rai has decided to concentrate supplying to the local market, with its largest markets in Indonesia include Bali, Lombok and Jakarta. Not only having wines made from locally grown grapes, Hatten also offers options for wine enthusiasts who love conventional wine flavors through the brand Two Islands. The varieties available for Two Islands are Shiraz, Carbenet Merlot, Chardonnay and Riesling. Defying the popular notion that growing grapes and producing quality wine in the tropical climate of Indonesia is near impossible, Hatten has managed to establish a successful wine trade, while gathering some international recognition. Hatten — with its Aga Red, Aga White and Alexandria as well as Tunjung and Jepun sparkling wine and Pino de Bali—are now known internationally and have won a number of medals in global competitions. Amidst all challenges, the wine business has now reached its 20th year. It is passion for wines that makes Rai not only managed to survive in the business that require greater efforts to be successful in Indonesia, but he also thrive to develop the business. Caring for the environment and local community is among the company’s commitments toward sustainability. Not merely being money oriented, but the company always finds ways to be beneficial for other people, including how to be environmentally friendly, creating a convenient working atmosphere for the employees and building a partnership with local farmers around the vineyards. And since this is a family business, Rai has been emotionally tied to Hatten, refusing all the investors offering to take over the company. On the other hand, he prepares the younger generation in the family to ensure they would be able to run the business in the future. This family-owned business still includes the Dewi Sri company, makers of Arak Bali and Brem Bali. To this day, the Dewi Sri company is the sole traditional arak producer with a professional commercial distillery. SOS V.2 N.2 | March - April 2015

Tumpek Wayang Words by Ferina Suci
T
umpek Wayang has a very special position and is considered the most sacred. Why? Because of Tumpek Wayang poses a pile of transitional times falling on Saniscara (Saturday), Kajeng, Kliwon, Wayang. Saniscara (Saturday) is the last day in the count of Saptawara (seven-day week); Kajeng is the last day in the count of Triwara (three-day week); and Kliwon is the last day in the count of Pancawara (five-day week). Meanwhile, Tumpek Wayang is the last tumpek in the six sequences existing in the cycle of Balinese pawukon-based calendar. On that account, Tumpek Wayang becomes the day filled with transitional times. Because of this position, it is believed that Tumpek Wayang is a very auspicious day for transition, and is also connected with the Sapuh Leger mythology. In the Sapuh Leger mythology, Lord Siwa and Dewi Uma engage in improper sexual intercourse, leading to the birth of Lord Kala. This birth is considered “wrong” or salah wetu, and people born during this time are also considered wrongly born with sickly and unwanted properties. There are many versions of the Sapuh Leger story, and one of them is One day Lord Siwa was having a leisurely walk on the beach with his wife Dewi Uma when the wind blew and Dewi Uma was exposed. At the sight of her beauty, Lord Siwa became lustful and wooed the goddess to make love. Lord Siwa’s semen then fell into the ocean and was discovered by Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu and was given a mantra. From this mantra-infused sperm, an ogre was born named Lord Kala. To honor his son, Lord Siwa gave Lord Kala a boon that he may prey on people who are born during Tumpek Wayang. Later, Lord Siwa had another son named Kumara who was born on Tumpek Wayang. In accordance with Lord Siwa’s boon, Lord Kala was permitted to eat Kumara even though Siwa did not want this to happen. Nevertheless, Lord Kala chased Kumara and they came across a shadow puppet performance. Kumara then hid behind the shadow puppeteer. Lord Kala eventually caught up and since he was so hungry he ate all of the offerings in front of the shadow puppet screen. This made the shadow puppeteer very angry and he demanded that Lord Kala give his offerings back. Since Lord Kala could not, he promised not to prey on the people who born on Tumpek Wayang if they had organized a ceremony and staged a wayang sapuh leger performance. So, based on the mythology the people who were born on Tumpek Wayang should perform the self-purificatory rite with the presentation of puppet shadow play staged under the title of Sapuh Leger. SOS

Panache Hair & Body Work
Twenty years ago, when there was no beauty salon around Sanur, Panache was established and became the pioneer in providing hair and body works in the area. Located in the heart of Sanur, on Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Panache was quick to gain its popularity among tourists, thanks to the advanced European technique and style applied by the experienced hairdressers. Even when manicure and pedicure had not been familiar here, Panache had provided such treatments for its customers seeking to pamper themselves while holidaying on the island. The beauty salon is commendable for the excellent work of its hairdressers in haircut, styling and coloring, not to mention its friendly service that makes the customers feel comfortable. In line with today’s trends in hair and body works, Panache combines its conventional treatments with more advanced techniques to ensure utmost satisfaction for its customers. Nogo Bali Established in 1986, Nogo is purveyor of high quality handwoven ikat fabrics and their designs have upholstered and decorated scores of hotels and villas in Bali, including the Four Seasons Resort Bali, Le Meridien, Grand Hyatt, and Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa. The manufacture of ikat is a fascinating, precise tie-dye process. Threads are bundled and tied and dyed according to the desired pattern, and then woven on a plain garb, giving a cloth which has the design indelibly embedded within it. Nogo’s designer, Lily Coskuner, uses only the best material and dyes, and this makes the fabric finer and more durable, with long-lasting color. Customers are welcome to choose from the extensive collection of garments and soft furnishings in the shop or submit their own designs for the production in Nogo’s facility. Gili Cat Commencing operations in 2007, Gili Cat was the first fast boat company to offer a daily service between Bali and the Gili Islands. Their service model is based on excellence in service delivery. High quality outcomes are driven by a commitment by its management and staff to provide a safe, comfortable, fast and reliable service to ensure complete customer satisfaction. Gili cat promise to the passengers can be summed up in the words…“Gilicat Gets You There…” Gili Cat offers fast and reliable boat transfers from Bali to Gili Trawangan and West Lombok. Passanger will be picked up at their hotel or villa and they will be on the beach at Gili Trawangan by 10.30 that morning. Road transfers are included in the price. Gili Cat operates from the coastal port of Padangbai because it offers the most direct, fastest and safest sea crossing. The average crossing time is one hour and twenty minutes. The passengers board the boat from a custom built dock in Padangbai and get off at the jetty in Gili Trawangan. No wet feet! No other fast boat operator can give that assurance. Gili cat’s aluminium hulled boat is made in Australia to international standards. No other boat on the Bali-Gili-Lombok run can make that claim, and that’s guaranteed. Pertokoan Laghawa, Jl.
