PERFORMANCE NOTES

Although tempo should be as fast as possible, tempi will have to be adjusted to the individual orchestra. If single tongueing in the flutes is difficult, the figure ' (j !i may be changed to 7

If this movement is excerpted, all percussion parts are to be played; if it is played as part of the set, omit the tambourine part.

TIMPANI PARTS ---

Two versions are possible. 1) As notated (which is preferred) or 2) improvised (here the players simply keep the eigths going on one individual drum while always alternating each measure, i.e. Timp I - Timp. II, Timp. I, Timp. II, etc. Dynamics are always piano , the incessent repeated P3 , being more important than dynamic accents.

DRUM -SET --- To be played by a very good jazz drummer who enters as indicated.

ENDING ---

The stage action is optional as described on the last page of the movement. As jazz-drummer takes over, the remaining players rise as if to leave and the conductor also walks off. The players must watch the Concertmaster for a cue to begin playing the repeated notes (which are easily memorized.)On the first beat of measure eight of the repeated notes, there is a Tam-Tam stroke (F) at which point the standing players freeze for about 10 seconds; they relax when the Concertmaster lowers his bow or at first applause.
