FOREWORD Sound and Music is the UK’s landmark organisation for new music and sound. Open for business since October 2008, we are the result of bringing together the British Music Information Centre, Contemporary Music Network, Society for the Promotion of New Music and Sonic Arts Network. From digital platforms to a UK-wide programme of live events, it is our ambition to raise the profile of new music and sound in the public consciousness, building support and audiences for innovative work. Our learning, participation, and professional development initiatives lead the way for artistic exploration and excellence in this field. The Sound and Music website, soundandmusic.org provides a unique concentration of resources, with opportunities for artists, composers and practitioners to upload their work via our on-line community, as well as comprehensive listings of events, video, multi-media, and details of all Sound and Music activities.

LIVE EVENTS Our Vision and Mission

Musical excellence and innovation are at the heart of Sound and Music.

Our vision is a world where new music and sound transforms lives, challenges expectations and which celebrates the work of its creators. To achieve that goal, we champion innovation, learning, and artistry through: Exploring contemporary approaches to music and sound creation Deepening engagement with a high quality programme embracing live events, new technologies and participation Optimising the impact of our work by raising its profile, developing audiences, and cultivating partnerships To deliver that mission we are building a full programme of activity and development which consists of four areas:

Our audiences should expect a high level of quality and diversity in everything we do. And they can expect to be delivered the unexpected.

LEARNING AND PARTICIPATION

DIGITAL Digital as Art Digital and New Media art has been interlinked with music and sound throughout its history. Over the past decade, advances in technology and accessibility have made it even more relevant to the public; with people now creating sounds in their bedrooms that would have required a whole studio thirty years ago. We are committed to exploring new practices, technologies and music that are at the forefront of art, whilst providing the context and histories that underpin it. We will do this through a programme of commissions, collaborations and research.

Sound and Music Online We aim to give as many people as possible access to the art of new music and sound. soundandmusic.org was launched in Spring 2009, bringing together a huge network of artists, publishers, promoters and music fans, alongside Sound and Music’s own work. With free listings, opportunities, profiles, podcasts, blogs, downloads and commissions, it provides a new hub for music and sound in the UK and beyond.

LEARNING AND PARTICIPATION

Enriching The Experience

Sound and Music aims to provide the context for as many people as possible to benefit from the rich experiences of contemporary practise in music and sound. Our programmes and projects connect to events, encouraging creativity and mutual understanding amongst artists, participants and audience members.

It’s our belief that the more you know about what you are listening to, the more you’ll get out of it. On the website there is rich information about Sound and Music events to read, watch or listen to before and after the gig.

Historic Perspectives Sound and Music gives context to the current music and arts scene by opening up collections and archives. We have access in person and online to a collection of scores and recordings stretching over the last one hundred years. This knowledge base will continue to grow as Sound and Music nurtures partnerships with information sources throughout the UK and internationally.

Publications We have launched key publications to keep you up to date with the UK’s new music scene: The Sampler, our fortnightly guide to what’s on in the UK; and INTO, our monthly online magazine for Sound and Music Members. As our programme develops, a series of high-quality print and digital publications will aim to provoke new ideas and document important milestones.

Engagement We are developing a broad programme to encourage deeper involvement with our work. We give young people the chance to have their work commissioned and developed with professional practitioners, or to listen and compose with the sounds of their local environment. Activities and events provide opportunities for people of all ages to get close to artists and their work, ideas and creative processes.

Professional Development Sound and Music is committed to developing skills and nurturing outstanding talent in the sector. A targeted programme of support and professional development is central to our mission. We work in partnership with leading organisations to maximize opportunities for the work of composers, sound artists, performers and producers, helping them in their career progression with the longer-term aim of securing a stronger future for new music and sound in the UK.

SUPPORT US As a charitable organisation, we rely on individuals, grant-making organisations and the business sector to fund our work. With their commitment and support, Sound and Music can develop and grow; and in turn the work we nurture and promote can flourish and connect with audiences. From membership through to various levels of charitable giving, there are many ways that you can help to ensure the ongoing life and legacy of the work and resources we deliver.
