SOUND CITY / 2015

WELCOME TO LIVERPOOL This is a big year for Sound City. The journey we have been on so far has now led us down to The River Mersey. It was always going to happen. As a city we have often been accused of turning our back on the river. For years it seemed like we were endlessly peeking over the garden fence at our neighbours down the other end of the M62 and looking at what they were up to. It could be argued they also did the same thing. By doing this it took our eye off the ball. We forgot about what made us different and distinctive. Liverpool is a port city. We have a long and chequered relationship with the Mersey. It is our gateway to the world. That is why, moving Sound City from our home in the Ropewalks part of the city and onto the Docklands of Liverpool Waters was in the end an easy choice. It is transformational change that we welcome with open arms. It allows us to create a new template and a whole new experience. One that cannot be easily imitated.

Our new festival site is situated on the fantastic Peel Land on Bramley Moore. Nestled into the industrial landscape of forgotten docks and tobacco warehouses. We are bringing this land to life and turning it into a post apocalyptic world. Think Mad Max and Warriors. We are smothering it with music and stages from over 25 different countries. Amongst all of this we will also be delivering our widest ever arts and culture programme that will include comedy as well as installations and spectacles to entice and delight. It will be a completely immersive and total experience. Our acclaimed conference also moves to our new home and into the magnificent setting of the Titanic Hotel. This is adjacent to our new festival site and allows our delegates to make the short journey by foot or by water taxi. What other festival in the world could you arrive at by boat? Our themes this year include the relationship between Liverpool and New York - these 2 great cities and our ‘special relationship.’ We welcome many New Yorkers to the city including longterm friend and Liverpool ambassador Seymour Stein along with the living punk legend, Danny Fields. We will also be looking at the

4

notion of the unsung hero. Those mavericks who changed everything but often do not get the full credit they deserve. We are delighted to welcome to our bosom Wayne Coyne & Scott Booker, Edwyn Collins, Mark E Smith, Julian Cope, Viv Albertine and James Barton. As ever, our focus is on the zeitgeist. Our aim is to inspire and breathe new desire into the next generation who will shape the 21st Century music business. Our conference programme is always designed with this in mind. We are proud of the money and jobs we have generated for our city and for the music and digital business sector (over £16 million to date). We are proud of the companies we have inspired from around the UK and globe that have now located their business here because they came to Sound City and fell in love with the city. At Sound City we are all about keeping the business talent in the region and in the North. We believe epi-centres for business are now less important. Technology and fragmentation of the industry means you are nearer than ever to your customers and can more easily connect and drive business. Our aim is to make Sound City the conduit to drive these connections and this business. This is also a key aim when it comes to our overseas

SOUND CITY / 2015

strategy and working with our new partners in Korea and New York. Finally, Sound City just happens to be in Liverpool but this is the obvious place for us. We are proud to be in our city. We are helping to define the future of the city and put Liverpool firmly on the world map as a place to come and do business. We hope you fall in love with Sound City and ultimately with Liverpool. Enough to make you bang the drum and come again next year. Have a great time and see you on the dancefloor. David J Pichilingi Sound City CEO

JOE ANDERSON MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL

Huge congratulations to Dave Pichilingi and the whole team for bringing another world class music, art, creative and business event to Liverpool in the form of the much anticipated Sound City 2015! What Sound City does is very much at the heart of what Liverpool is. As a city we are world famous for our musical heritage, but Sound City proves that our future is as rich and vibrant as our past. More than that, the focus on business and the wider creative community is vital to the economic development and sustainability of not just Liverpool but the UK at large.

8

With its international reach and global audience, I know that this year’s Business Conference and Festival is going to be the best yet. Setting up in their new home on Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, Sound City 2015 is a clear signal to the world that this city is open for business, for investment, for growth. For all delegates and visitors - welcome. I know you will thoroughly enjoy your stay. With best wishes,

Joe Anderson OBE Mayor of Liverpool

ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND

Liverpool Sound City celebrates its eighth festival this year in its new home at the iconic Bramley Moore Dock. I’m delighted that we have been able to support this move through our National Lottery funded Grants for the arts programme. Sound City has been able to utilise the existing architecture on the docks alongside popups and an outdoor main stage in programming a huge range of artists and speakers that will truly celebrate the unique spirit of the city while providing a national and international platform for musicians and the music industry.

I’m looking forward to seeing how these developments will add to the audience experience. Alison Clark Director North Arts Council England

LIVERPOOL VISION Welcome back to Sound Cityan event that is important not just for the digital and creative sector here but for the city as a whole. I never fail to be impressed by the amount of activity that Dave and his team cram into a few days and this year’s move to Liverpool Waters is an exciting development for the festival and a clear indication of their ambitious plans to make Sound City even more of a player on the world stage. Liverpool Vision itself has changed since the last Sound City took place and our missions are now even more closely aligned. Liverpool Vision has a clear focus on two interlinked areas: marketing the city and attracting and retaining investment. Music is a key part of the Liverpool brand and international events like Sound City do much to market the city to a global audience. We know that people who come to see the bands play here have their eyes opened to the many and varied attractions of the city and come back with friends and family to visit and contribute to the wider economy. Students decide they would like to come here to study and, crucially for us,

businesses and investors realise that Liverpool is a great place to do business or to invest. Liverpool Vision now has an Investment Team whose job it is to attract companies to the city and to support existing city businesses to grow. Our aim is to use high profile events like Sound City to showcase the city’s amazing offer to businesses.

(IFB), building on the success of the inaugural event in 2014. Sound City gives us a chance to plug the international digital business community into the opportunities offered by the IFB and we will working closely with Dave and his team to ensure we maximize these opportunities.

Big business, entrepreneurs and emerging talent are being drawn to Liverpool by market opportunities, business benefits and an outstanding quality of life. EDWYN COLLINS THURSDAY 21ST 17:45 - 18:45 TERROR LOUNGE The first the world heard of Edwyn Collins was in February 1980 with the release of Falling And Laughing. The debut single by his band, Orange Juice, it was also the first offering from Postcard Records, the independent label Edwyn co-founded, run from Red Light district in Glasgow’s West End. As a record, Falling And Laughing was a cacophony of shrill guitars. Postcard closed its sock drawer in late 1981. Edwyn took Orange Juice into the Top 10 with 1983’s Rip It Up complete with Buzzcockshomage guitar solo. Edwyn immediately embarked on a solo career, though it would be ten years before he found himself back on Top Of The Pops with 1995’s A Girl Like You. Fast forward another decade to February 2005, when Edwyn had just finished recording songs for his sixth solo album. On Sunday, February 20, 2005, Edwyn was admitted to hospital after collapsing at home. He was later diagnosed with having suffered two cerebral haemorrhages and underwent a precarious neurological operation. Incredibly, through a combination of surgical

brilliance, the heroic support of his family and his own seemingly invincible will power, Edwyn pulled through. Six months after his stroke, he was back at home. But more phenomenal still was his determination to overcome the physical after-effects hindering his movement and speech so he could return to the studio and finish the album he’d already begun. The result was Home Again, a testament not only to Edwyn Collins the songwriter, but Edwyn the man and his resolute spirit. Finishing Home Again has been a Herculean struggle, but Edwyn’s perseverance has more than paid off. Asked to rate it against his entire body of work, Orange Juice included, Edwyn ponders for a few seconds. “Home Again,” he finally says, “it’s perfect. These songs are me. This is who I am.” Since the release of Home Again, Edwyn has continued to renew himself, one step at a time. In November 2007, he took to the stage again, having painstakingly relearned the lyrics to his songs. In October 2008, he quite suddenly reconnected with the songwriter inside him, and has since recorded a whole raft of new songs for an album released in 2010 called ‘Losing Sleep.’ 14

In May 2009, Edwyn was honoured by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, when he was awarded the Ivor Novello Inspiration Award. Spring 2010 saw the US release of Losing Sleep. Featuring collaborations with his friends and supporters Franz Ferdinand, The Drums, The Cribs and The Magic Numbers, not to mention Johnny Marr and Roddy Frame, the album has already been hailed by many as the best of his life and is already enjoying success in the UK and Europe. Edwyn’s eighth solo album, UNDERSTATED, was released in 2013 on his own label AED Records. Edwyn’s latest venture and his response to the challenges of the new music business. FILM SCREENING 19:00 - 20:15 TERROR LOUNGE 2014 brings a film, called ‘The Possibilities Are Endless,’ conceived and directed by Ed Lovelace and James Hall. Premiering at SXSW Film in Austin, Texas in March 2014, it’s a hymn to happiness, the story of Edwyn’s life, right now. Edwyn is responsible for the soundtrack, also to be released later in the year.

MARK E. SMITH THURSDAY 21ST 13:30 - 14:30 THE MAGIC PIPER SUITE Mark E Smith is the legendary leader of the Fall. He formed the group in 1976 at the age of nineteen, and gave up his job at Salford docks shortly after. In the subsequent three decades and more, the Fall have had an infamously ever-shifting roll call of members, while being prolific in the extreme; with over thirty studio albums released (additionally the group have released numerous live albums and compilations).

With an idiosyncratic vision, and a pioneering musical output, Mark E Smith and the Fall have a widespread following internationally; the band were championed by John Peel, who proclaimed the Fall his favourite band, explaining, “They are always different; they are always the same.” An influence on American bands, particularly (including Pavement and the Pixies), Smith has always pushed artistic boundaries. Among his many cultural interventions; a play ‘Hey Luciani’ about the

22

reign and death of Pope John Paul I, and a collaboration with the dancer Michael Clarke (‘I Am Kurious Oranj’). He has a reputation for being a spiky, honest and uncompromised interviewee, too; in one way or another, our session with Mark E Smith will be both unpredictable and memorable.

SOUND CITY, JUXDIT AND PLEDGEMUSIC >Real Time Direct-To-Fan Campaign THURSDAY 21ST 10:30 - 11:30 The Magic Piper Suite With traditional revenues diminishing, direct-to-fan is becoming a crucial revenue stream for artists at all stages of their careers - PledgeMusic and JUXDIT will give a valuable insight and case study into what it takes to run a successful campaign and will launch 3 campaigns for artists which will run over the four days of Sound City. The panel will include an in depth discussion about the journey of artists that crowd fund online - what it takes to be successful, what to avoid, how to create campaigns that win over even more fans. Direct to fan platform PledgeMusic will speak to Nick Otageui from The Tea Street Band, who have previously crowdfunded successfully. The Tea Street band submitted to PledgeMusic in early 2013, and launched on 19th February 2013. By 11th May 2013 they had reached their funding target and during that time they posted 33 Pledger updates with media content such as downloads and album artwork, news on tour dates and shipping information. They

achieved 626 total pledges for exclusive items such as signed CDs, pledger name in credits, exclusive rehearsal room gigs and new design T shirts. They ran the perfect campaign, keeping momentum and engagement with their fans during the whole process, which proved invaluable to their success with PledgeMusic. JUXDIT and PledgeMusic and the 3 artists who will be launching their campaigns at Sound City- Sankofa, Gerry Cinnamon and Scarlet - will discuss what they will be doing over the four days of the Conference and festival during the first real-time direct to fan crowd fund campaign, including offline crowdfunding at festivals and gigs, This is the perfect opportunity to find out exactly what you need to do to raise money and increase your audience as an artist through the power of your fans! PANEL SESSIONS >THURSDAY The Terror Lounge 10:15 - 11:15 Another Brick in the Public School Wall The Rise of the Rock Toff With school music spending down and the benefits system crippled there are murmurs that the voices of pop have lost their bite. The great cultural tide that surged through the 1960s and beyond, the sea change that swept the McCartneys, Finneys, Bakewells, Courtenays, Baileys, Bennetts et al to positions of influence and eminence has ebbed and turned. It is clear that cuts to benefits, the disappearance of the art school and the harsh cost of further and higher education are pricing the working class out of careers in the arts and making it increasingly a playground for the comfortably off. These so called ‘rock toffs’ such as James Blunt, Mumford and Sons, Coldplay, Laura Marling, Eliza Doolitle, Lily Allen, Florence Welch, Pixie Lott, La Roux and Mark Ronson are starting to become the prevalent forces in pop culture. Is the current economic climate returning the practice

of art to what it was 300 years ago – a rich fellow’s diversion? Have we become a nation where ubiquitous talent contests explicitly reject collectivity, preferring instead to celebrate rampant individualism and the acquisition of wealth and fame above all else. Or are we just over reacting and restating the age old working class argument that posh kids should lay off pop culture?

ALAN WILLS 1961 - 2014 Alan Wills was a mentor and ally to many people in the music business. With his partners in crime Ann and Joe and through Deltasonic he changed the whole musical landscape in Liverpool and the UK. Alan had his own unique style that he brought with him from Anglesey to the heart of Liverpool. He was savvy and opinionated. A true maverick. A truly innovative person. He was also warm and had a fast, dark and often childlike humour. He had so much time for everyone. He had a thirst for knowledge and as we all know he could be an expert on just about everything. He would sweep you along on his surging tide of enthusiasm. He had boundless energy for just about everyone. He had amazing insight and vision. The combination of all of these things was the ability to bring you into his world and inspire you to bigger and better things. He had time for anyone. He loved to talk and share his ideas and thoughts. 3o Minute meetings turned into endless debates waged over endless packets of Fredos, chips and egg and eternal cups of milky latte where he would wax lyrical over his views on music, politics, jeans, religion, family,

loft insulation and anything else where his mind wandered to. He had acute insights and philosophies on life and business. He had wild theories on political conspiracies and his musings on the intricacies of manufacturing Japanese selvedge jeans and the God like status of New Balance trainers were legendary. He was never afraid to debate and get his ideas and opinions across. One thing that was always clear and deeply rooted with Alan was his passion for his beloved bands and artists who he loved with real and deep loyalty. They were always within his sights, his mind and his focus of vision. He

Like all visionary and innovative people his vision was based upon an extensive knowledge of everything that was cool and right about music, art and wider pop culture of the past 50 years. He used his inspiration and innovation to inspire a new generation of artists and by doing so create a new pop culture movement. How many of us can say we did that.

IN CONVERSATION THE MAGIC PIPER SUITE 10:45 - 11:45 DANNY FIELDS Interviewer: Julie Cullen - 6 Music We are ecstatic to announce a special conversation with punk legend, Danny Fields. Involved in the music industry since the 1960s, Danny has documented the industry’s growth over the decades, as a photographer capturing iconic moments in punk history and as a manager introducing new artists to the wider world.

the Sex Pistols and the Clash, shaping pop culture and thus developing the iconic punk movement. Danny brings knowledge and wisdom to the forefront of band management, photography, music journalism, PR and promotion, to inspire our audience.

12:15 - 13:15 VIV ALBERTINE Interviewer: Dave Haslam Author/DJ/Hacienda

Danny will give us an insight into how he changed the face of the music world while working for Elektra Records, his time doing publicity for the Doors, signing Iggy Pop and MC5 plus his editorials on the Velvet Underground and the Who.

This year we are proud to welcome Viv Albertine to talk to us about her time as a musician, filmmaker, artist and a guitarist for the all-female punk band The Slits. Viv joined The Slits in 1977, one of the most influential bands emerging from the famous punk era. As a songwriter and musician in The Slits and a confidante of the Clash and the Sex Pistols, she has been a dominant figure in British punk. In a male-dominated music era of the late 70s early 80s, The Slits produced three well received albums- Cut, The Slits/Bootleg Retrospective/ Untitled and Return of the Giant Slits.

Following his introduction of The Ramones to the UK, he became an influential figure on the punk scene, Danny motivated punk bands such as

Last year Viv published her memoir Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys to rave reviews. Viv encompasses the attributes that all musicians and the industry alike would learn from, with her fresh, female perspective on punk to the Sound City Conference 2015.

13:30 - 14:30 JANE WEAVER Interviewer: Luke Bainbridge The Guardian Sound City are delighted to present Jane WeaverLiverpudlian singer, guitarist, songwriter and record label executive. contributions from well known artists including Elbow’s Craig Potter and Richard Jupp, her second album Seven Day Smile is a collection of home recordings, third album Cherlokalate explored psychedelic folk from american influence, the fourth album The Fallen by Birdwatch received rave reviews, Jane has proved psych folk didn’t die with the hippies in the 70s. Jane self-produced her most recent album The Silver Globe released in 2014, with contributions from Cyptron, David Holmes and Badly Drawn Boy. A vocal sample from the track Silver Chord was used on Another Arms from Coldplay’s Ghost Stories. For 20 years Jane has dedicated herself to her independent micro-industry, producing conceptual pop LPs through her label in Manchester. As a creative and inventive musical figure, Jane will have plenty of expertise to share at the 2015 conference to solo artists, musicians, producers, songwriters, promoters and label executives. 14:45 - 15:45 JAMES BARTON Interviewer: Dave Haslam Author/DJ/Hacienda In 1992, three mates from Liverpool, including James Barton, saw the need for a home for those revelling in

the dance music boom - enter Cream. Cream soon grew to attract over 3000 people every week from around the UK who saw dance music as a lifestyle and not just a source of entertainment. Not wanting to keep this haven locked up in Liverpool, Cream events soon spread across the world, drawing in crowds everywhere from Ibiza to Moscow. From there, Creamfields launched firstly in the UK (1998) and then in countries across the globe. This year at the Sound City conference we’re delighted to have James in conversation. James telling his story on how he managed to turn a small club night in Liverpool into the worlds most recognised EDM brand and what it felt like to be named as the most influential person in the world for electronic dance music last year by Billboard. If you’re a promoter, venue owner, DJ, artist, festival organiser or just have an interest in what it takes to build an brand into a global phenomenon then this is an unmissable opportunity to ask any questions to one of the worlds most recognised figures in EDM. 16:00 - 17:00 THE VACCINES JUSTIN & FREDDIE Interviewer: Mike Walsh - XFM Along with performing at the

43

festival this year, Sound City give a warm welcome to The Vaccines’ members Justin Young and Freddie Cowan at this year’s conference. The Vaccines’ growth has been hugely successful; In 2009 Justin and Freddie formed the band and uploaded a home studio recorded demo of If You Wanna to Youtube which led to appearances on radio shows, rave reviews from music critics and an appearance on Jools Holland- all before they released a single. Within a year they grew from playing a debut intimate free gig in London to headlining festivals, playing with Arctic Monkeys, the Rolling Stones and Muse. In 2012 they finally released their debut album What Did You Expect From The Vaccines which went straight to platinum. The Vaccines came third in BBC’s the Sound of 2011 along with multiple nominations across different awards and won Best New Band, Emerging Talent and New Music Award. They have a strong dedicated fan base which has led them to appearing in over 40 festivals each summer since their debut album. We cannot wait to hear all that Freddie and Justin have to share with us; to any song writer, musician, artist, social media promoter or events manager- The Vaccines boys are not to miss!

THE PHIL ELLIS ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS The Marketplace It’s no secret that creative businesses who have engaged with the Sound City Conference have agreed contracts worth £15 million (Cobham Murphy ltd. independently audited statistics). Networking events during Sound City comprise of delegate breakfasts, drinks receptions and the famous Sound City roundtable sessions which are where new contacts are established and deals are done. The roundtables give exclusive access to a host of different Sound City keynotes and businesses. Part talking shop, part networking event, part a chance to engage in interesting, topical and, hopefully, fun debate. The roundtables are also a chance to put forward your ideas and opinions in a relaxed environment with group of like minded souls and meet some amazing new contacts. They were a great success in previous years, so this year they are back better than ever. Each session is made up of 6 tables, each hosted by an expert in the industry who will initiate and help steer the conversation of a predetermined discussion topic, relevant to music and the creative industries. The topic of the Roundtable

Discussions will be driven by the hosts, to which you have the chance to engage in interesting, topical and fun debate. For a list of sessions, see timetable – speak to our friendly team at the Information Desk who will be able to let you know the times of the sessions. All sessions are first come first served so we will let you know which ones are available. The Roundtable Sessions are dedicated to our much loved and greatly missed friend Phil Ellis. Phil was known and loved by many as the networker extraordinaire. He was the man who did on average about 10 deals a day. He always had time for everyone and was great at getting people to talk to one another. He had the energy of 1000 Duracell batteries and is greatly missed. STUDENT ROUNDTABLES

Each year UK Music publishes an in-depth report into the music industry’s contribution to the economy. The report, Measuring Music, assessed the economic contribution of the music industry in terms of GVA, exports and employment. The government are not able to measure music’s economic contribution properly. Those in the industry must work together to do so, so we have the most accurate picture to present. The study in 2015 will again draw upon data held by BPI, MPA, PPL and PRS for Music. This data must be complemented by survey responses from members of the music industry. ARTS BRAMLEY-MOORE DOCK FESTIVAL SITE

A word from Sam Avery, Director of Liverpool Comedy Festival…

BRAZILICA Evening Friday 22nd May

We’re really excited about the Liverpool Comedy Festival tent at Sound City 2015.

Brazilica Carnival will be joining us again this year for a samba meets Mad Max feast for the eyes. If you haven’t seen Brazilica before you are in for a treat as you will be delighted with dancers dressed in the Mad Max theme along with one humungous float watching over the Sound Citizens while they party the night away. Liverpool Samba School was formed in 1995 and has taken part in festivals all over the world. In 2007 we formed the Liverpool Carnival Company, and were commissioned to produce the first Brazilian samba carnival parade in Liverpool as part of the city’s 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations. This glittering night-time parade attracted an audience of 30,000 people in its first year. Sound City are very excited to be inviting them back again to take part as part of our Wider Arts this year. All we need from you Sound Citizens is to join the carnival party! COMEDY Sunday 24th May The Kraken Stage 12.30 - 16.00

Northern England has a very strong comedic heritage and we wanted to showcase some of the best Northern comics in the country to demonstrate that it’s anything but grim up North. All these acts have played the Liverpool Comedy Festival in the past and it’s really exciting to be teaming up with Sound City to add a new element to their Festival.

They are thrilled to be appearing at this year’s Sound City, where they will be performing their own unique Lindy Hip Hop show, which mixes traditional Lindy Hop manoeuvres with a New York themed hip hop soundtrack. behind Spark!: “We wanted to create something that was really dynamic, which would work in a variety of settings, and would appeal to all ages. It has proved universal, it is popular around the world. As the show progresses, the characters develop. At first they are mysterious – they could be from a different time, or place, or planet. Their characters start to emerge – some are very playful, and play tricks on the rest of the group. Others are frustrated and want to take control of things. The theatre element comes in with those relationships. The universal element comes out, too – wherever we are, people recognise elements of themselves or people they know in the characters.”

THUD, CRACKLE, POP 21st & 22nd May The Marketplace Rum Warehouse

RedHouse Originals is delighted to present ‘Pete McKee’s Thud, Crackle, Pop at Sound City’. ‘Thud, Crackle, Pop’ is a unique exhibition experience; an innovative and accessible way for people to buy and interact with art. Visitors are invited to look through the new artworks as you would ‘dig’ through the racks in a record shop, searching for that elusive LP. Each print is housed in its own vinyl sleeve and label, combining the excitement of record shopping and art collecting. Amongst the racks of exhibition prints will also be rare, one-off McKee sketches and special edition signed prints available exclusively at Sound City. Supported by Paul Smith and with contributions from music fans including Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Paddy Considine, Mary Anne Hobbs and Tim Burgess, this travelling exhibition will appear in Liverpool for two days only at the Sound City Conference 2015. The inspiration behind the show is McKee’s love of music and

the culture surrounding vinyl; those who buy it, play it, sell it and create it. McKee: “It’s a celebration of all things vinyl… While music is audible, vinyl brings that physical quality to it. The whole process is a performance; flicking through the racks, carefully pulling the disc from the sleeve, flipping to your preferred side, placing it on the turntable and gently lowering the arm onto the spinning black disc. Hearing the ‘thud’, ‘crackle’ and ‘pop’ before the track begins to play, sitting back with the sleeve admiring the artwork and reading the lyrics. This is my homage to vinyl and the glory of the 12’ sleeve.” The show has its own website at thudcracklepop.com, which is regularly updated with interviews, videos and news from the world of vinyl. The exhibition has already featured in the Guardian Guide, London Evening Standard, Shortlist magazine, Creative Review and Paul Smith’s World. TIM PEAKS DINER 22nd-24th May Baltic Stage

Sound City educational partner

In 1825 a small institution was founded that was to revolutionise education in Liverpool and provide opportunities for the working people of the city. The Liverpool Mechanics School of Art was founded by men of power and influence who recognised the transformative effects of education and the impact that learning and aspiration could have on individuals, on communities and on society. This small, pioneering movement laid the foundations for Liverpool John Moores University, an institution that has grown and flourished to become one of the UK’s leading civic universities. The University may be based in Liverpool but we have a global reach and international ambitions, and we are proud to be the educational partner for Sound City 2015. Our innovative three-year partnership with Sound City will enhance scholarship and provide students with opportunities to put their learning into practice. Across the festival you will be able to spot the efforts of our students. Third year spatial designers have co-developed some of the innovative indoor and outdoor performance areas and media students are undertaking a variety of paid internships working across the festival’s creative outputs.

SPONSORS

The Cavern is delighted to be once again involved in Sound City. This year we are sponsoring and presenting the 2015 UK and International Emerging Talent Cavern stage throughout the festival. The Cavern Club is the cradle of British pop music, the place where the Beatles musical identity was formed. Through seven eventful decades, before, during and after The Beatles, this legendary Liverpool cellar has seen its share of setbacks yet has played a role in each epoch of music, from 1950s jazz to 21st century indie rock. The list of artists who have performed at the Cavern Club, besides the fab four, reads like a who’s who of popular music, including; The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Stevie Wonder, Queen and in more recent years the likes of Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Travis, Adele, The Wanted, Jessie J and Jake Bugg.
