SOUND CITY + 2016
WELCOME TO LIVERPOOL As we hurtle into our 9th episode of Sound City it is worth reflecting on the great distance we have come in such a relatively short space of time. In business terms, we were recently measured on the impact we have had in the UK for those businesses and individuals who have been with us on our journey both in Liverpool and for our events abroad. This has now reached over ÂŁ18 million (on contracts signed) and does not seem to be slowing down. One of the key drivers when setting up Sound City was to bring a world class business audience into Liverpool and to allow them to engage with home grown business talent from Liverpool and the wider UK. In parallel to this was the desire to inspire a new breed of music business people and give them the confidence and self belief that they did not have to move away from Liverpool or the North to do their business. Instead they can stay in the North of England and build their business in their own backyard. This figure is testament to that message and one that our team and everyone who works at Sound City is very proud of and
strives to grow and improve. Liverpool is an international brand and is synonymous with music on a global scale. Sound City is all about looking forwards and creating new meaning and new identity for the future. We are still at the start of our journey. We have a long way to go yet but the signs are very promising. I am delighted to share the news that Sound City has now joined forces in a global equity deal with Modern Sky Entertainment. Modern Sky are the leading music brand in China and are led by the truly inspirational Shen Li Hui. He has built a vision that now encompasses the largest independent record label in China with over 200 albums released with 70 artists, as well as this the largest festival promoter in the region serving millions of customers every year. Add to that MNOW online platform with several million subscribers (rising by the minute) and interests in venues, fashion, art and media. Shen has built this company over the past 18 years and has done it in the right way by working with artists in a way that recognises their IP. We have many great plans on a global scale that will all become apparent through 2016 and 2017. Sound City continues to push our international agenda. In
4
November 2015 we delivered our first co-promoted event with Zandari Fest in Seoul, Korea. We took a large delegation of bands and business to the region who all took part in Zandari as well as MU:CON, which is the leading music business event from the region designed and delivered by KOCCA. Already there have been some great successes with those artists and businesses who took part. In 2016 we will step up this relationship with both of these wonderful events with the primary aim of stimulating trade between all those involved. As part of our international scope we are also working this year with UKTI and Liverpool Vision to deliver the International Music Day at the International Festival For Business. This will take place on 28th June and will include key music business delegates and business from India, China, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. This is a must attend event if any of you want to understand how to get your business involved in any of these territories. All that’s left to say is have a fantastic time and do some great business in Liverpool! David J Pichilingi Sound City CEO

JOE ANDERSON MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL
It is a great pleasure for me to welcome all delegates and visitors to Liverpool for this year’s Sound City Conference and Music Festival. Sound City is one of the most highly anticipated events in the Liverpool calendar, with the conference and festival growing bigger and better each and every year. It really is a testament to Dave Pichilingi and the whole Sound City team that this world class music, art, creative and business event is now celebrating its 9th year. As a city world famous for our musical heritage we
10
take great pride in not only our past but our future too. Sound City plays a pivotal role in celebrating that with a business conference and festival that puts Liverpool in the international spotlight once again. With another outstanding line-up of artists and industry professionals, I am sure 2016’s Sound City will be the best yet. I hope you all enjoy the festival and your time spent in our city. With best wishes, Joe Anderson OBE Mayor of Liverpool

ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND
As Sound City continues to learn from and strengthen its festival offer in its new home on Bramley Docks, I am delighted that Arts Council England has once again supported the organisation through our National Lottery funded Grants for the Arts programme. I have been excited by the possibilities that the move to Bramley Docks has created, both for Sound City and for emerging artists across the North, in offering the chance for them to meet and connect with music industry professionals from around the world. This year the entire festival is aimed at anyone over 16, enabling many more emerging artists at the beginning of their career to benefit from both the festival
11
experience and the music industry conference. At the heart of the SoundCity+ conference is a desire to make real opportunities for today’s artists – and those of tomorrow. Bringing a diverse and exciting range of speakers, music industry professionals, world-class artists and businesses to the North creates real prospects for UK artists at many different stages of their careers. LIVERPOOL VISION A warm welcome back to Sound City – a event that is now firmly established in the international music industry calendar. First, let me congratulate Dave on the recent announcement of his deal with the Chinese company Modern Sky. I had the pleasure of meeting with Modern Sky’s Chief Executive, Li Hui Shen, and members of his team on their first visit to Liverpool and look forward to welcoming them back as fully fledged partners of Sound City. We are expecting over fifteen Chinese business delegations to visit us later this summer as part of IFB 2016 and, as the example of Sound City proves, this presents a real opportunity for Liverpool businesses seeking investment. Music is a key part of the Liverpool brand and international events like Sound City do much to market the city to a global audience. In December 2015, Liverpool received the designation of a UNESCO City of Music and we need to get the message out that not only is Liverpool a top destination for music tourism, but it is also an effective business location if you are operating in music and related industries. Events like Sound City are absolutely key
to helping us to achieve both of these objectives. We know from recent experience that people who come to the conference or to see the bands play at the festival have their eyes opened to the many and varied attractions of the city. As a result many come back with friends and family to visit and contribute to the wider economy. Crucially for us, businesses and investors realise that Liverpool is an outstanding city to do business or to invest in. The Invest Liverpool team at Vision works to attract companies to the city region and to support existing businesses to grow. We firmly believe that Liverpool is a city in the right place, at the right time. We are at the centre of the UK’s second largest regional economy with access to six million customers, an economy worth more than £121 billion and over 250,000 businesses. We are strongly connected to global markets and multinationals are already investing in our business friendly, cost competitive environment. Big business, entrepreneurs and emerging talent are being drawn to Liverpool by market opportunities, business benefits and an outstanding quality of life. Liverpool offers investors possibilities across a broad range of industry sectors. This is why Liverpool
12
and the surrounding region is the number one recipient of foreign direct investment in the UK after London and the Southeast. Next month we will be hosting the International Festival For Business 2016 (IFB 2016), building on the success of the inaugural event in 2014. Sound City gives us a chance to plug the international digital business community into the opportunities offered by the IFB 2016 and we will be working closely with Dave and his team to ensure we maximise these opportunities. Sound City are in fact working in partnership with UKTI to deliver a key IFB 2016 event on 28 June entitled ‘Discover Real Business Opportunities in the Asian Music Markets’. This will deliver a comprehensive insight into the opportunities that exist for UK music companies in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan and India. For further details on this and the full IFB programme please go to www.ifb2016.com. I know Sound City will put on another fabulous event and I’m sure you will have a great weekend in Liverpool. We look forward to welcoming many of you back next month for IFB 2016. Max Steinberg CBE Chief Executive Liverpool Vision

SOUND CITY KOREA Since 2011, we have worked with KOCCA and KCCUK to showcase Korean artists at Sound City festival and conference every May. The showcase is an annual highlight to the music industry and fans who attend every year and this year will feature Dead Buttons, Patients, 57, DTSQ, Laybricks, We Are the Night. We now work with Pentaport, one of the biggest festivals in Korea to book and supply UK artists to play Pentaport Festival each year. Pentaport has an audience of over 50,000 people. Last year, we were delighted to begin Sound City Korea, when we took 6 UK artists including Hyde & Beast, Chelou, Natalie McCool, Johnny Sands, The Tea Street Band and Fizzy
Blood and several industry including Baltic Records, Hatch Records/ Come Play With Me and The Weird and the Wonderful Management, to play at and attend Zandari Fest, Hongdae, Seoul as well as take part in MU:CON which is the flagship music business event for South Korea. As a result of performing in Seoul, Fizzy Blood were offered an autumn tour in Korea plus a label deal with Loverocks Records. “In terms of the band, it was a really strong experience that will stand them in good stead for the rigours of touring in the future. 2 members had previously toured Europe fairly heavily but the challenges and problems of touring somewhere so far away, with harsher language barriers and a completely alien culture is not something any of them had
23
experience before. I know there is a feeling in the band now that after ‘surviving’ that week, that most other tour experiences would be a walk in the park and not only did they ‘survive’ but they thrived.” Brendan Walsh, Manager, Fizzy Blood Sound City Korea will return in autumn 2016 and will be inviting artists and industry to apply to attend in the summer. HELP MUSICIANS 17:00 - 17:30 THE DREAM FACTORY It’s time for the music industry to talk about mental health Following the recent launch of Help Musicians UK’s (HMUK) mental health campaign at The Great Escape festival, the country’s leading charity for musicians are looking to raise the spotlight on mental health within the music industry and look at how its unique structure and culture impacts on musicians who face mental health challenges. In a Q&A with HMUK’s Chief Executive Richard Robinson,
Scottish singer-songwriter Sam Whates will discuss her own struggles with mental health as a professional performer, looking particularly at the strains musicians often endure and what the industry can do to establish a duty of care. Forming part of a wider debate in the public eye, Richard and Sam will discuss how the industry can better ensure the good health of musicians, both on and off the stage. In addition, Richard will touch on a recent HMUK survey that uncovered nearly 70% of professional musicians as having suffered from a psychological issue, giving Sam the opportunity to reveal her own struggles, her ways
28
of coping and the (lack of) support she received from the music industry. HMUK is commissioning the University of Westminster for the first of its kind academic research into the mental health of music professionals, which Richard will touch on. It is clear that no one in the industry should have to sacrifice good mental health in order to keep making music, reinforcing HMUK’s stance of the need to address health and wellbeing in the music community as a serious issue.

JEN OTTER BICKERDIKE 17:45 - 18:15 THE DREAM FACTORY Purple Rain: Why losing Prince hurts so hard: How death of a celebrity affects our lives April 21 was a dark day- for the music business, for creativity and, most visibly for the millions of people around the world who had been affected by the work of Prince Rogers Nelson. Coupled with the equally shocking passing of David Bowie earlier in the year, public grieving and shock dominated the media. Why does losing both of these greats, specifically Prince, hurt so badly? Dr Jennifer Otter Bickerdike explores the role of pop icons in our lives, and how their deaths impact our own identity and mortality. Dr. Jennifer Otter Bickerdike
is a media and music academic, specialising in fan culture, the cult of dead celebrity, pop culture and music. She has written and presented extensively on fandom and media, using her experience as a former American music industry and Silicon Valley executive to explore a range of societal issues and behaviours. Originally from California, Jen spent time at a variety of record companies, including Sony Music, MCA Records and Universal Music and Video Distribution before becoming the West Coast Marketing Director for Interscope Geffen A&M Records at 25. She toured with and devised marketing and branding campaigns for major international acts including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Dr. Dre, Gwen Stefani, U2 and Eminem, before leaving
29
to start her own consulting company, working with a wide array of creative industry and technology tastemakers, such as Facebook, Music for America, Adeline Records and L.A.M.B. Jen is currently a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Production at Falmouth University in Cornwall, England. In 2013 she won the coveted Student Led Teaching award for Most Innovative Lecturer and was shortlisted for the same accolade on a national level by the Times Higher Education. Jen is currently working on a project about the importance of vinyl records and another subject close to her heart, the re-emergence of yacht rock in the 21st century.

SOUND CITY+ INDEPENDENT LABEL MARKET
With more and more artists self releasing and building their own DIY careers, the role of the label has changed massively in the last few years. There are always mavericks that are prepared to reinvent and challenge the status quo, and at Sound City+ we’re proud to showcase some of the best of the independent labels who are doing this, from established veterans to new names, from the UK and internationally. Our Label Market is dedicated to our good friend Alan Wills, a mentor and ally to many people in the music business. With his partners in crime Ann and Joe and through Deltasonic he changed the whole musical landscape in Liverpool and the UK. One thing that was always clear and deeply rooted with Alan was his passion for his beloved bands and artists who he loved with real and deep loyalty. They were always within his sights, his mind and his focus of vision.

UK festivals are hugely important for emerging talent, and give new artists the opportunity to play to big audiences and on the same bill as high-profile established acts. This session will feature panelists from some of the most popular UK festivals and will allow delegates to hear first-hand about current opportunities, application procedures and the benefits of using festivals to grow a fanbase. This is being jointly hosted by the MU and the AIF who in 2015 teamed up to create the ‘Fair Play for Festivals’ agreement for emerging artists playing at the AIF’s 55 member festivals.

Whilst the British music industry has a very broad spectrum of often divisive

business interests, it remains collectively challenged by legislation, threats and changing market factors. UK Music was founded to bring together all areas of the commercial music industry under one roof. Through economic and sector research, we are now able for the first time to show the true economic and cultural value of music to Britain, showcase our growth and strength as a significant employer of young talent and to challenge Government to support the music industry. Over the past few years, UK Music has campaigned successfully for the introduction of the Live Music Act, changes to planning laws to protect music venues from redevelopment and won a judicial review to scrap Private copying legislation that worked against creators. Data and research have never been more important to the music business, and in 2013 UK Music set up the Music Academic Partnership in order to bring research and academia closer to the industry on projects such as the recent Bristol live music census. The panel will discuss the power of data and research, and what it means for both lobbying and British music as a whole and will feature experts, Parliamentarians and academics. •

DJ WORKSHOPS MAIN ROOM 13:00 - 14:30 BEN PEARCE Ben Pearce’s name is synonymous with ‘What I Might Do’, his oddly anthemic deephouse debut that dominated club floors across the world in 2012. Whilst this is an easy correlation to make (the track went platinum in Europe, reached #7 in the UK charts and was the most Shazamed track of 2013 in the UK), those who have followed him since the beginning can testify that he is so much more than that. Ben is very much an underground DJ first-andforemost, aided in no small part by his vast musical knowledge and the ability to play across a wide range of musical genres. His skills behind the decks have not gone unnoticed, as shown by high-profile sets alongside the likes of Simian Mobile Disco, Tensnake and Claptone. On the rise, Ben was named DJ Mag’s Best Breakthrough Producer in 2013 and in the following year further proved that he’s deserving of the coveted award. Becoming increasingly known for his remixing abilities as well as his own original productions, remixing for Le Youth, Kwabs and Tender Games all in 2014.
He collaborated with Black Orange Juice ‘Predictable’ for MTA, a soulfully smooth single that equally showcases lyrical flair and production talent, as well as releasing the underground club infused ‘Lego’ EP on his own label. DJ Sessions Hosted by Manchester Midi School 15:15 - 16:00 DJ MARK ONE DJ Mark One’s talents as a DJ, Remixer and DJ for the multi-platinum selling band Texas have taken him far and wide around the globe. His musical style is diverse enough to offer a fusion of House, Tech House, Jackin House, which are reflected in both his DJ sets and his remixes. At the early age of 13 Mark got interested in DJing and went on to be the UK Northwest Mixing Champion in a number of competitions in 1991, 1992, 1993 & 1995. Since that time Mark has played alongside a large number of high profile DJs (Grandmaster Flash, Judge Jules, The Prodigy, Fat Boy Slim, Roger Sanchez) Mark was also one of the supporting DJs for Madonna at the Brixton Academy.

He currently runs dedicated Ableton Live courses at the school, his music composition course for electronic musicians, and also delivers specialised subject matter on the flagship diploma courses. Outside of teaching, Tom produces as 2 Billion Beats with Col Hamilton: their disco-house-synth-pop tunes and remixes have had a number of releases across labels worldwide. When he’s not writing, he produces local bands, mixes down for other producers and ghost writes for a number of other artists. “I took the advice, tips and processes I learnt from the course into consideration with the management of a band I work with. We have since signed a publishing agreement and a small record deal with a digital label. The money coming in from some of the potential sync deals and small advance means I will hopefully be able to focus on this more full time or at the very least, use it to support myself while I explore more entry level positions within the music industry. The future for the band looks extremely promising as well and with this new support, we are very excited about what comes next. I’m very grateful for the experiences and contacts I made from the course and would fully recommend it to anyone else.” Brendan Walsh To apply for a place on the next Sound City music business entrepreneur programmes, launching the end of July, go to www.soundcitytraining.co.uk Sound City is grateful to Arts Council England for its support for the Sound City Music Business Entrepreneur Training Programmes.
